01 SITE IN CONTEXT
Negeri Sembilan
Port Dickson
Port Dickson Beach
Negeri Sembilan is a state in Malaysia which lies on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It borders Selangor on the north, Pahang in the east, and Melaka and Johor to the south.
Despite only having 119 300 population in Port Dickson, it is one of the most important town of Negeri Sembilan, started out as a small town named ‘Arang’ meaning coal in Malay in 1880.
One of the main attraction located in Port Dickson, due to the large amount of tourist, the area is mushroomed with hotels and Resorts and residential household.
With the Minangkabau people bringing a cultural heritage which is still preserved and practised today as the Adat perpatih, they also brought along the unique architecture to the state.
After the locals discovered the potential as a seaside recreational destination, it eventually bring in over 20 million of tourist to visit yearly.
Despite the economy brought by the tourists, it also backfired and caused pollution at one point and required timely clean up for the beach.
1
01 SITE IN CONTEXT
Mainly residential buildings are found in the macro site, due to smaller building footprints, it results in lower hierarchy, provide sense of tranquility and promote walkability and permeability.
Introduction to macro site Macro site consist a lot of fine grain buildings, this is to prevent attention from the users being dragged by buildings resulting less appreciation towards the recreational beach.
Commercial buildings are located near the residential building but is separated from the beach to avoid making the beach overly busy while providing convenient access to the locals.
Design consideration
COMMERCIAL OTHERS RESIDENTIAL EDUCATIONAL GOVERNMENT RELIGIOUS
Using the gathering space and pool to act as a buffer to the observation area allow some users to appreciate the site peacefully, this floor plan layout is designed by observing how the site direct human circulation to achieve tranquility for some certain area.
The beach site considered fine grain due to minimal gradient to soften the contrast between The two, resulting users to pay more attention to the beach instead of the buildings around. This shows that synchronized planning between the beach and the surrounding fabric will lead to mashed collage that connect the users
2
01 SITE IN CONTEXT
Lack of effective shading and interesting features are the main reasons users won’t stay in the site for too long, although adding interesting features won’t be necessary since it will attract too much human traffic resulting site to lose its unique peaceful charm, adding more shading should allow user to experience and appreciate the site more.
Introduction to proposed site The proposed site is located near the end of the beach, consisting significant vegetation such as mangroves due to the suitable habitat. Without the advantage of having fine sand and lack of effective shading, there is only small amount of users in this area.
An abandoned building can be found near the site, it is believed to be a restaurant that got burned down later. It affected the user experience and cause an uneasy feeling towards the users, despite the building does tell a story within the local community, it is suggested to be demolished to avoid threat
West view from the site offers scenic vista towards the sea, the feeling of users towards the view is enhanced due to the elevated ground from the site providing different perspective for the users. While north view provide a clear view towards the beach.

04 SITE CONTOURS
Illegal parking occured in this area because of convenience, a parking space is suggested to be included near this area.
Effective shading and resting areas are provided in this area, resulting Users to experience this area more compared to the other areas.
Lacking effective shading from vegetation, users mainly approach to this area to experience the beach, despite the ďŹ ne sand and sea offered by this area.
6
04 SITE CONTOURS
Mainly locals are using this area to camp or to purchase food from the temporary canteen. The intimacy provided in this area is an opportunity to create a building that allows local to gather and experience the site more.
Unique feature such as rocks pattern are found in this area, however the sudden drop of height can post a threat towards users and can cause injuries.
7
04 SITE CONTOURS
Aside from the unique pattern offered by this area, the elevated ground also provide different perspective of the view.
8
05 NEIGHBOURING CONTEXT Rows of commercial buildings act as a buffer between the beach and residential area but are also easily spotted from the recreational beach side to provide convenient foods and drinks accessibility to the user.
Residential area are located at the opposite site of the beach, separated by a main road to reduce human traďŹƒc and provide sense of tranquility to locals.
LEGEND COMMERCIAL OTHERS RESIDENTIAL EDUCATIONAL GOVERNMENT RELIGIOUS
Educational building is located in the center of the residential area to provide easy access for the locals. Beside the educational building also consist a cyber building for educations on internet for students.
9
05 NEIGHBOURING CONTEXT
Vacant lands use Within the site consist few vacant land, previously there was a building situated here that was demolished. Remnants of the buildings can still be found within the vicinity of the land.
The importance attached, and the priority given, to the environment and to urban ecological planning varies by community. It is not recommended to have coarse grain building since it will disturb and affect the overall hierarchy of the site.
It is suggested to use the vacant land to build a restaurant to act as a gathering space for the local, reason being there is no proper gathering area the residential area. The bigger land can include a visitor interpretive centre to introduce tourist to the local culture and history.

07 CIRCULATION - PEDESTRIAN LEGEND Designated Walkway Pedestrian Crossings Unintentional Pathways
The pedestrians on the beach mostly disregard the designated walkway and made their own route because of the fact that they are revel in nature
By a result of having only one particular traffic light, the pedestrians occasionally cross the road during the same time the vehicles are not supposed to stop. Accordingly, it is extremely unsafe for the pedestrians to cross the road.
The openness of the beach area can be determined by the arrows showing the ‘flow’ of the pedestrians moving freely.

This type of roof is believed to have been inuenced by colonial Dutch and British house forms. Hence this roof is seldom used in malay houses. This type of roof give a higher headroom for a better ventilation, and the usage of trunk as columns also give a tree-house feelings for the user.
Smaller gazebo its consists of two tiered pyramidal roof. This architecture style is descended from their Minangkabau ancestors. The colour of the columns allow building to blend in natural.
Gable roof is the most common and the simplest house form in Melay traditional houses. Gable roof is the most efficient in its ventilation properties and easiest to construct and promote cultural sense.

08 MAN-MADE FEATURES & UTILITIES - DESIGN SOLUTIONS
ROOF STYLE
We can apply the traditional singgora tiles from the gazebo to our design consideration, as an act to appreciate local’s culture and pay respect to their ancestors.
PUBLIC TOILET
Because of the increase in visitor numbers going to the beach, some of a proper and hygiene toilets need to build around the site. A sustainable with opening and local materials toilet is the best solution for beach area.
GAZEBO
With the existence of gazebo, some users misused the gazebo as a grilling or camping area, these will harm the aesthetic gazebo with a rich culture contain inside. A proper signage and more rubbish bin are necessary around the gazebo and camping area.

COCONUT TREE
RHU LAUT
PONGAMIA PINNATA
One of the most common trees on site, this species grew in the site due to the suitable Habitat of the site. Suggested to be preserved To enhance the feeling of the site.
Tallest species on site, they are across the entrance of the beach and act as a sign of arrival to the beach to visitors, and people around the area. Preserving these give people the sense of the direction.
The bushiest trees to conclude on site. It acts as a shading device against the sun. Preservation of these trees are necessary as the people need a place to ďŹ nd shade and cool area separating them from the hot sun.
32
09 NATURAL PHYSICAL FEATURE
●
MANGROVE swamps should be preserved to prevent erosion, storm surge since its roots on site are efficient in dissipating wave energy and slow down tidal water .
●
MANGROVE retain, concentrate, and recycle nutrients hence preventing contamination of the site to ensure local to have fruitful catch.
●
Additional to locals, MANGROVE provide resources to the community for timber, fuel, food medical herbs etc. this shows locals depend on it for some extent of survival.
Taking that into consideration, it is best to design a space in the swimming center which promotes the natural features of the site By providing clear view towards the mangrove, allowing users to appreciate the culture and ecosystem brought by the mangroves.
33
09 NATURAL PHYSICAL FEATURES
To appreciate how the mangrove represents a significant part in the locals lives, it’s advisable to build away from it and better yet frame it to appreciate all its beneficiaries. Swimming Centre that is able to provide a more close proximity experience to user .Allowing tourist to catch the local accent of the site.
Framing of view caused by branches of a single tree. Horizontal planes in emphasized with the contrasting vertical lines of the tree. Design may be based on emphasis of horizontal patterns. Creating a space which is able to enjoy the view framed by the trees.
Trees filters ample sunlight through causing a delightful play of shadow. Casting delightful shadow pattern. User experience for kids , following the gleams of light on the ground. Openings which allow shadows of leaves to cast into the centre.

10 SENSORY - NOISE
Overhead airplane
Noises are concentrated mostly at the centre of the site, where the night markets are situated. Dense human activities surround the market, further out they’re dispersed on the beachside campsite located across the busy road. Periodically, airplane noises can be heard from the routes which occurs mainly parallel to the shoreline. As you get on the embankment, the sound of the waves crashing against the man-made peninsular dominates the airspace.
