National Merit Foundation Awards
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition that began in 1955. Students enter the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). There are three levels of recognition: Commended, Semifinalist and Finalist. Commended students are recognized for their outstanding academic promise, scoring among the top 5% of test-takers; semifinalists are in the top 1% of U.S. high school seniors, and include the highest-scoring students in each state; and finalists are selected from the pool of semifinalists, based upon their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors/awards received. Finalists further compete for a National Merit Scholarship, judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Bellarmine College Preparatory Coat of Arms Our seal is symbolic of our Jesuit history and our location in the great state of California. The diagonal stripes in the upper left-hand quadrant of the shield are derived from the family crest of St. Ignatius of Loyola’s maternal ancestors. The King of Spain granted one band for each of the seven Oñaz brothers for their heroic service and bravery in battle. The image of two wolves eating at a kettle, as pictured in the lower left quadrant, is taken from the heraldic crest carved into the lintel on St. Ignatius’ family home in Loyola, Spain. Derived from the Spanish words “lobo” (meaning wolves) and “olla” (meaning pot) - Lobo y Olla, roughly contracted into the name “Loyola” - it refers to the prosperity and generosity of the Loyola family who, after feeding family, retainers, and soldiers, had enough to feed even the wild animals. The pine cones in the upper right quadrant originate from the shield of St. Robert Bellarmine’s family. The inverted pyramid of six pine cones represents the region surrounding Bellarmine’s hometown of Montepulciano, Italy, which is noted for its evergreen trees. The lower right quadrant is a grizzly bear, similar to that included on the California state flag, representing strength, courage and independence.
