CATA LO G U E O R D E R I S SA L E O R D E R Development & Delivery
We will continue to develop your newly purchased herd sire(s) for you at no cost. All we ask is that you insure your purchase for the duration that he is being developed. The bulls staying until spring will be semen checked and delivered to you in April/May or as loads develop for your area. For anyone wanting to develop their own bulls, a rebate of $250 per bull will be subtracted from the purchase price. This applies to any bulls taken sale day or delivered within seven days of the sale.
Semen Testing
All of the bulls in the sale have been vet inspected, palpated and scrotal measured prior to going to grass in the spring and again prior to the sale. None of the bulls selling have been semen checked. Most veterinarians agree that semen checking is only valid for up to 30 days post testing. Any of the bulls selling are fully guaranteed; if they happen to be incapable of settling cows, a replacement bull will be supplied until a suitable bull is available. Credit for the incapable bull may be used at any Moose Creek sale on any breed of bull. At no point shall the compensation be greater than the purchase price.
Online Bidding

2-YEAR-OLD BULL SALE
1:30PM • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2019 AT MOOSE CREEK RED ANGUS 3 M I L E S S O U T H & 1 M I L E E A S T of K I S B E Y, S A S K ATC H E WA N WELCOME to the 2019 Edition of the Moose Creek 2-Year-Old Bull Sale. It is with great anticipation that
we assemble this offering for sale. Our program is rooted in the commercial sector. We have always put more emphasis on easy fleshing, convenient, efficient cows that work in a minimal management system than the industry does. Vigorous, unsupervised births, all the way to hairy, sound, saleable calves at weaning defines our direction. The brood cow band must be able to accomplish this in a forage based, low cost environment. Ultimately, this is our advantage to other seedstock providers. The Red Angus pen is our largest and most consistent. The majority of the bulls are heifer approved, all the while supplying adequate growth and phenomenal maternal strength. The performance bulls offer the ability to sire heavy weight calves come fall without sacrificing the core values of easy keeping, stress free cattle. We have shrunk our Red SimmAngus group to not only improve them but were ruthless culling out the unpopular characteristics of the two breeds. These boys are massive, powerful, with a wonderful temperament. Easily the most impressive group you will find all sale season. Finally, our Charolais offering has grown, and will continue to grow.We have seen tremendous interest in the white bulls. The tan calves are the talk of the sale barns and rightfully so. As many producers are moving back to Char X calves, none of them want to give up the calving ease, vigor or peace of mind that they had before. Our Charolais herd is built with the May/June calver in mind. All of the bulls on offer have been responsibly developed. Fed lightly their first winter, the entire group was sent to pasture mid April and grazed without supplemental feed until late October. These bulls are not dry lotted feedlot steers. They are athletic, sound, hard muscled and in moderate shape. Please don’t come looking for “show bulls”; you’ll be very disappointed. As in the past, we will keep your bull until spring and deliver him to your yard. If you are apprehensive of purchasing a bull so far from home, please contact us and I know you’ll be shocked at how many of your neighbours we are already supplying genetics to. Our dear friends Jack & Dianne Wilson will be doing their smoked beef dinner and it’s worth the trip alone. Lunch will be served at high noon; come in your car, bring your family, let us take care of the rest.

be the weaning or sale weights of heifers retained as replacements or feeder calves sold. Can the producer improve reproductive performance in the herd? Compared to growth and carcass traits, reproductive traits are more lowly heritable. Changes in reproductive efficiency are most easily made by management changes or the impacts of crossbreeding through heterosis. Over time, progress can be made by selecting and culling for reproduction. Nearly every management decision associated with the cow herd is simplified and improved with a shorter calving season. Herd health, nutritional, and reproductive management are much easier when all cows are in a similar stage of production. Restricting the breeding season to 60 to 90 days will produce a more uniform calf crop which enhances marketing opportunities. It is easier to match up your forage supply with the nutritional demands of your herd when all animals are in a similar production cycle. Vaccination programs are more effective when animals in the breeding herd are in a similar reproductive status.
Genetic superiority in any trait doesn’t matter if the beef female doesn’t get bred and deliver a live calf for the producer.
A more concentrated calving season is important for the smaller or part-time producers who have major time restrictions in their daily lives. I don’t know of any producer that enjoys the stress and worry of calving season over an extended period of time. This is especially true if calving season comes during inclement weather and you are away from the farm for long stretches of time during an average day.
For spring-calving beef herds, the breeding season is currently or soon will be underway. Many decisions have already been made in terms of the genetic makeup of the 2018 calf crop. Natural herd sires or sires to be used through artificial insemination have been selected. Mature cows have been retained and replacement heifers have been introduced to the breeding herd. Hopefully the genetic decisions that have been made will prove profitable when next year’s calf crop is sold.
A shorter calving season will eventually lead to greater efficiencies in reproduction rates. Palpate shortly after the conclusion of the breeding season and cull heifers and cows that don’t conceive within your given calving season and don’t look back. Keep daughters of the cows that get bred early each calving season. If necessary, buy bred females that calve within your desired window to replace the open females. Implementation of these practices will certainly improve your herd’s reproductive performance over time.
Nearly every beef specialist or researcher that I am familiar with will tell the cow-calf producer that reproduction is the most economically important trait in beef cattle. Numerous studies have shown that reproduction is several times more important than growth or carcass traits. Simply put, genetic superiority in any trait doesn’t matter if the beef female doesn’t get bred and deliver a live calf for the producer.
Probably the production group that is the most consistently mismanaged in the typical cow-calf operation is the replacement heifer. An ideal scenario would be for the replacement heifers to be managed as a separate group until after they’ve had their first calf. In smaller herds, heifers retained as replacements are often managed with the mature cows from first breeding through first calving. As a result, these heifers may not receive the proper nutrients to meet their dietary needs.
How can the cattleman evaluate the reproductive performance of the herd? I would suggest three key areas to evaluate. They are as follows: 1. Calf Crop Percentage: This would be the number of calves weaned divided by the number of cows exposed divided by 100. 2. Distribution of Calving Dates: This would be a picture of how calving dates are scattered across an existing calving season. 3. Pounds of Calf Produced Per Cow Exposed: This would
Keep in mind that replacement heifers should be at 60%65% of their expected mature weight at 15 months of age. They should also be at least 85% of their expected mature weight when they calve for the first time as two-year-olds. These heifers should be bred before the mature herd. This allows the producer to better supervise the first-calf heifers at calving and allows them more time to start cycling and get bred back as two-year-olds. This scenario sets up the replacement heifers to have realistic chance to become productive members of the herd.
Management of the bull power needed to adequately cover the number of cows in the herd is a key component to reproductive success. The appropriate bull to female ratio will vary on a variety of conditions such as the bull’s breed, age and body condition, the nature of the pasture situation, and the length and seasonal timing of the breeding season. A longstanding rule of thumb for a proper bull to female ratio would be one female per months of the bull’s age up to 36 months of age. There are instances where producers will turn out multiple sires over a larger group of cows. Do not assume that number of matings per sire will be spread out evenly across the herd. Research has shown there be various levels of dominance expressed across a multiple sire pastures in terms of the number of calves sired by each bull in a pasture. What are some reproductive goals for the beef herd that the cow-calf producer can strive to achieve? Consider the following targets: 1. 90%-95% in heat in the first 21 days of the breeding season. Note: This will be virtually impossible to achieve in anything longer than a 60 day breeding/calving season. 2. 70% conceive on the first breeding. 3. 90% or greater conception at the end of a shortened breeding season. 4. Less than 5% difficult or assisted births. 5. 90% of cows bred wean a calf. Achieve these reproductive goals and you will be well on your way to future profitability with your cow-calf enterprise.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS that create value at every level of the industry.
Moose Creek Red Angus is a fourth generation purebred operation situated in southeastern Saskatchewan, just south of the beautiful Moose Mountains. Our herd consists of two breeding groups; a winter group and a spring herd. Together, they number over 400 strong. In addition to the registered herds, we also run a large commerical cow-calf and grass yearling program. We are passionate about the cattle industry and are proud to be involved in the sustainability movement. It is important for us to be working with other like-minded groups; that’s why we’ve been involved, since their inception, with programs such as, BIXS, VBP+, McDonald’s Sustainability Pilot and Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef.
A heartfelt thank you to our customers for supporting us for over 40 years in the business. Many have been with us for more than 25 years while spanning 3 different generations of bull buyers. It is an honour to call so many of you friends!
Which cows are consistently
MAKING YOU MONEY? Use Your Eyes and Records to Decide Which Cows to Cull ~ Michelle Arnold, DVM (Ruminant Extension Veterinarian, UKVDL)
Which cows in your herd are consistently making you money? Every year, the cow-calf producer needs to critically evaluate each animal in the herd and decide if she is paying her upkeep. Open cows at the end of breeding season obviously are high on the cull list. With variable costs running $400-$500 per year per head and an additional $100-$300 in fixed costs, keeping open cows is difficult to justify financially. Beyond pregnancy status, what other variables are important to evaluate? Structural soundness, body condition score, age, annual performance, and disposition are significant factors to consider when developing a culling order specifically for your farm. This culling order is essentially a ranking of the cow traits you consider most important for a cow to be productive on your farming operation. Culling is exceptionally important during times of drought or a year with marginal hay production as you may be forced to cull deeper to manage through a challenging season. However, there may be times to consider keeping more replacement heifers and letting older cows go, such as when many in the herd are getting older and the heifers have good genetic potential to perform. To begin, it is best to think about which animals in the herd have the least chance of being productive over the long term or are farthest away from being productive. Equally important are factors such as disposition and phenotype (color, size) that affect the marketability of offspring. The following is a list of factors to carefully consider when deciding who to cull this year. DISPOSITION - A cow’s attitude is an important consideration in any cattle operation. Bad behavior has both a genetic component and is also learned behavior by calves at an early age. Mean, nervous, “high strung” cattle are dangerous to people, damage facilities, tear up fences and make gathering and working cattle difficult at best. Remember a good cow can be protective of her calf without being dangerous and destructive. PREGNANCY STATUS – A cow should produce a calf at least once a year and the sale of that calf needs to pay her way. Diagnosing a cow as “open” (not pregnant) is as simple as having a veterinarian palpate for pregnancy at least 40 days either after breeding or after the bull is removed. A simple, inexpensive blood test can also be used 28 days post-breeding to determine pregnancy status. If many cows are found open at pregnancy check, work with your veterinarian to determine if reproductive disease, poor nutrition, bull infertility or inability to conceive was the cause. Remember cows that calve late in the season have fewer opportunities to breed back in a controlled (for example, 90 day) breeding season. Summer heat and fescue toxicosis can be important contributors to low
conception rates. STRUCTURAL SOUNDNESS – Bad feet, lameness due to hip/knee injury, eye problems, and poor udder conformation are all examples of structural problems that adversely affect performance. Good feet and legs are essential for weight maintenance, breeding, calving, self-defense, and raising a calf. The udder should be firmly attached with a level floor and high enough that newborn calves can easily find and latch onto teats. Cows with blind or light quarters, funnel or balloon shaped teats, or any history of mastitis are strong candidates for culling. CHRONIC CONDITIONS - Cows with chronic conditions that will not improve such as progressive weight loss, early cases of cancer eye, repeated episodes of vaginal prolapse during pregnancy, and extreme sensitivity to the effects of fescue toxicosis should be removed from the herd as soon as the calf is weaned. Cows with confirmed disease conditions such as Johne’s disease, bovine lymphoma, or advanced cancer eye should not be sold to a commercial market. The most common reasons for carcass condemnation at slaughter include emaciation, lymphoma, peritonitis, cancer eye, blood poisoning, bruising, and other types of cancers. AGE – Cows are considered most productive between 4-9 years of age. The size and shape of the teeth can be used to assess age but always evaluate them in light of the diet. Cows that eat gritty or sandy feeds and forages have increased tooth wear beyond their years. Regardless, cows with badly worn or missing teeth will have a hard time maintaining body condition. Remember, older cattle die of natural causes, too. POOR PERFORMANCE – Record keeping is an invaluable tool for evaluating performance. Readable visual tags on both the cow and calf allow you to match calf sale weights to the dams and identify cows that did not produce a calf. Inferior genetics and poor milk production produce lightweight calves that do not grow well. An overweight cow or large framed cow with a small calf that doesn’t gain weight usually means the cow is not producing much milk. Sick baby calves may be an indication of poor quality colostrum and poor mothering ability. PHENOTYPE – Cows that do not “fit” the herd because of external features such as unusual breed, size, muscling and color are candidates for culling. These challenges may be overcome to some degree by choice of sire to balance out the unwanted traits. Remember that buyers of commercial calves
look for uniformity in color, weight, and frame in a set of calves and will pay a premium price for it. THE LAST ONES TO GO – Hopefully culling will never have to go this deep in your herd. Bred cows over 9 years old, replacement heifers (especially those that did not breed in the first 30 days), and bred cows 3-9 years old should be the last sold. Thin cows that conceive late in the breeding season should go first. Since 20% of gross receipts in a typical cow-calf operation come from the sale of cull animals, pay attention to price seasonality and body condition score before sending these animals to market. Prices are historically highest in spring and lowest in late fall/early winter when spring born calves are weaned and many culls are sent to market. Adding weight and body condition to culls is an opportunity to increase profitability but can be expensive. Work with a nutritionist to come up with realistic cost projections before feeding cull cattle for a long period of time. When it comes to making decisions on who to cull, remember to consider functionality in your environment. Is she an “easy keeper”? Does she keep flesh and condition and raise a good
calf, even when feed and forage is limited? On the opposite side, does she give too much milk or is her frame size so large that you can’t keep weight on her, even when pasture is plentiful? Is her pelvis so small and tight that calving is a problem and will be a problem in her offspring? Functionality leads to longevity and improved efficiency. By retaining more young cows in the herd, you can decrease the number of replacement heifers needed each year and cull cows that are only marginally profitable. Young cows also increase in value as they mature because the body weight of the cow and her calf ’s weaning weight will continue to increase until approximately 5 years of age. Longevity will also be improved through crossbreeding because hybrid vigor adds essentially 1.3 years of productivity or one more calf per cow. If considering buying heifers, UK has a decision support tool available at http://www.uky.edu/ Ag/AgEcon/pubs/BredHeifer.xlsx to help understand how to evaluate the price in your specific circumstances. In summary, a herd of easy-keeping, efficient cows is possible through rigorous culling and careful selection of replacements. Match your genetics to your management and environment for maximum efficiency, longevity, and ultimately, maximum enjoyment of cattle production.

MOOSE CREEK RED ANGUS 2019 EDITION 2-YEAR-OLD BULL SALE
Red SimmAngus
The growth of our Red SimmAngus offering is a product of demand and luck. The base of our Red SimmAngus program is from two elite Red Angus herds we were fortunate to purchase. To develop superior Red SimmAngus stock, we knew we needed to start with an elite base. The foundation for our Red SimmAngus offering is as strong as any in the nation. They have been the reason for our success marketing more than 400 home raised, F1 bred females the last couple years. Their breeding strength is undeniable.

MOOSE CREEK RED ANGUS 2019 EDITION 2-YEAR-OLD BULL SALE
Charolais
For a decade now, we have been developing and breeding Charolais genetics. Our herd has grown from one cow to nearly 70 cows and back to 35 breeding females. The expansion and culling was in order to select the type of Charolais that will flourish in the systems that we and our clientele use. Cattle that are easy calving, vigorous at birth and maternal while still not losing focus on the superior traits that Charolais possess: performance based, stout, hairy, big pay weight stock. We have not worked to down size the white cows, however we have been successful at making them easier fleshing, lower maintenance and harder working.

MESSAGE FROM DARREN ABOUT the decision to not publish our EPD’s in the sale catalogue
this year. It was a choice we struggled with as I believe that EPD’s give one more set of information to use to choose your herdsire. The reason, mainly, is due to the inconsistency in the methodology that is being used by our Canadian Angus Association. Until the process is explained to us and we fully understand it, I do not have confidence that I can relay that data to our cutomers. Until then, we will not be publishing them. However, the bulls have them and if you are interested, please contact me prior to sale day and I can print off their numbers for you.
