Twin Anchor Fifth Annual
charolais Bull Sale
Welcome...
Welcome to our 5th Annual Bull Sale. We want to say a heartfelt thank you to our former sale partners, the Taylors, for the past four years. We were very fortunate to have found such good friends to build with as we climbed towards our own sale. Be sure to check out their two year old production sale at the end of March. Also thank you to the Dryland staff for assisting with sale preparations and providing the facilities. The cattle market continues to be strong and Char cross calves are in high demand. Every year we see more and more cattlemen realizing the benefit of the Charolais breed as a cross. Char bulls cross good with pretty much everything, Simmental, Angus, Hereford, Limousin, Gelbvieh and the list goes on. Char cross calves bring a premium, and they perform, plain and simple. Buy yourself a Char bull and put some extra dollars in your pocket when you sell your calves. The Twin Anchor Bull class of 2021 is ROCK SOLID. We are extremely pleased with the depth of quality in this sale from top to bottom. We have meticulously selected these yearlings from 120 plus purebred momma cows. The two-year-olds in the sale are younger calves that were top quality and were retained to sell as two-year-olds. We have always strived to change and adapt our feeding program to offer what is best for the bulls and our customers. This year was no exception and we believe we have found the best feeding program for our bulls. They were started on whole Nasser oats with free choice hay. They were then quickly moved to a TMR ration consisting of home grown silage, top quality hay, whole Nasser oats and customized mineral. Our Herd sires all have proven to be easy calvers, with that extra punch for good weaning weights. The genetics we have built our herd with have been carefully picked, and I think you will agree the quality shows in these bulls. This group of bulls has something to offer for everybody. Bid with confidence, and if you have been thinking of trying a Charolais bull, maybe this is your year. Even if you don’t plan on buying, come out and check out our operation on sale day. If you have any questions or would like to view the bulls, we will be happy to help.

As we sit down to write our welcome and introduction to our annual bull sale we are still dealing with the grief of losing my Dad, Larry Steeves, a man who made me feel that when he was raising cattle, he was ‘living the dream.’ Just a few short weeks ago he asked me while lying in his hospital bed, “You like the Charolais cattle?” It was an honest question from one cattle lover to another. Both Dad and I appreciate good cattle of any breed. He had settled on Polled Herefords back in the 80s, but had tested out various breeds. He knew the Charolais were Clifford’s all time favorite but wanted to know what his eldest daughter thought. I could honestly look Dad in the eye and say, “Yes I do, they’re quiet, well muscled, and easy to work with.” He nodded his head with an affirmation that said yes that was a good answer. Friends, that’s what we want to bring to you at this sale, quiet, well muscled, easy doing cattle that will work well in any herd. We love what we do. These bulls have been loved and cared for at least 12 months and it has been our joy to watch them grow and mature into future sires for our fellow cattlemen. We slowly started them on a complete free choice ration of mixed oat silage and oats. We have missed pail feeding them this year but they have remained quiet and calm and we are proud of the finished product. As we type this, we have no idea what the restrictions will be on sale day, but if you are able we hope you can join us sale day and if not please follow the sale on DLMS. We are so grateful to our buyers. Last year was an overwhelming success even as restrictions were made just as our sale took place. You are a resourceful lot and we look forward to seeing you and hearing from you once again.

In loving memory of
Larry Steeves
April 12, 1938 - December 14, 2020
We dedicate this sale catalogue to the memory of the greatest cattleman this family will ever know, father, grandpa, great grandpa, Larry Steeves. Born in the arid south country near the end of the dirty thirties, Larry grew up farming with his father and brothers. He married the love of his life in 1958, and they purchased a small farm in the Lomond area. Drought and hail encouraged him to follow his parents lead and move to the fertile land of the Alberta parkland and in 1963 they sold their Lomond farm and purchased a farm in the Meeting Creek valley. There he continued to pursue his passion for cattle. He loved good cattle of any breed but dabbled in Horned Hereford and Simmental then finally settled on Polled Herefords.. As he himself had been an avid 4-H member he encouraged his young family to be part of the 4-H program and he moved from member to leader, as he taught his son and 3 daughters the ropes of cattle feeding, grooming and showing. A patient but meticulous parent, he wanted them all to learn how to look after cattle and how to do it well. They can all remember measuring and weighing out the grain, cleaning the stall and portioning out the hay, hours of combing, tying up and leading. He showed and sold in many shows including the Calgary Bull Sale, Lloydminster Bull Sale, Camrose Bull Congress, Farmfair and also held positions of office for many of these organizations. His rotational grazing projects hosted visitors from around the globe.
He took an AI course in order to open up more options for breeding his purebreds. Hours were spent in the early hours of dawn and the evening dusk watching for cattle cycling. His efficiency at AI'ing was phenomenal. Our commercial cattle carried some of the first embryos from his purebred polled Herefords. It was an exciting time to watch this interesting part of beef history unfold. He teamed up with Roger and Chuck Davis on this new venture. This was in the 1980’s and resulting progeny from the transplants sparked a lot of interest. One heifer from embryos placed into our cows sold for $36,000. The top bull sold for $12,000 to Latimer’s at Remitall Farms. He was always learning, absorbing, and reading any new agriculture information and educating the rest of us. He was keen to attend the shows and sales of his grandchildren as they followed in his footsteps and he always could strike up a conversation with a new ranchman and always knew several from previous connections. We often heard somewhere in the crowd the familiar, “Well, hello, Larry.” He knew the auctioneers, the ringmen, the fitters... he loved cattle but he loved people more and if he could enjoy the company of the two together even better. Many a cow enjoyed his kind, patient care and many a person felt the warmth of his loving, friendly, genuine spirit. We proudly acknowledge his work ethic, his dedication, and his love for cattle and his fellow cattleman and know that he rests with his Maker, “the Owner of the cattle on a thousand hills.”
“Thank you Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa for instilling in us your love for cattle, your excellent work ethic and sharing your knowledge with us.”

Harrison is one heck of a bull. I wanted to keep him for our own herd but decided to sell him to share some more of the 40A genetics with my customers. Out of the 40A cow I was bragging about earlier who I love. Harrison is super thick and correct. An absolute herd bull that will pass great maternal traits on if keeping daughters. 40A always weans one of the heaviest calves in the herd.

We love these Get a Copy bulls. This is a heifer’s 1st calf from a great cow family, not even a year but he is keeping up with the pack. He shares our youngest grandson’s birthday and so we had to name him after him. Like our grandson he has easily stole our hearts. Could easily find its place as a heifer bull in a purebred operation.
