Sociologists have discovered that the buying habits have identified our society as a “consumption society”. Through purchasing, we do much more than just buying or selling; the purchase becomes an experience that enriches our knowledge, guides our curiosity, moves us to want to socialize, and affirms our identities and our personalities. Our buying habits tell us who we are. And what we are buying is varied and abundant, as are the spaces that are dedicated to selling merchandise. Next to the traditional mom & pop stores we now have multi-stores and shopping malls, which are in fact covered markets of yore that have been introduced to the new millennium. And we even have concept stores, which sell hopes and dreams and identities more than just physical merchandise. In this veritable labyrinth of hopes and dreams and steals and deals, organization is key. It guides the buying experience, avoiding dispersion, so that the consumer is satisfied. Light is a determining factor in well-designed merchandising and displays. It tells us what we should be gazing at, it shows us the direction we should walk, it creates relaxing areas, and it helps us pick out what we are looking for. At the same time, each object, each type of retail space, and every single portion of these areas require adequate and special lighting; lighting that is designed to bring out the qualities and features of the merchandise on display. The answer to this need is lighting design. With experience and skill, passion and competence, lighting designers live, breathe, and dream light.
iGuzzini T h e H i s t o ry a n d C o m p a ny P h i l o s o p hy We have worked in and for “light” since 1958. This was the year when the Harvey Creazioni, a small company that produced lamps for the home, was founded. Today we are the leading Italian manufacturer in the “Lighting” market, and we rank among the top European manufacturers. We aren’t satisfied by simply making good lights. We want be the creators of good lighting: light that shines in a room, a house, a building, a museum, a cathedral, a company, a plaza, an airport, and, yes... even an entire city. Good lighting has to be created with the awareness that it has to integrate with its environment, taking care not to invade it, darken it, or violate it. Light must be respected, and light has to, in turn, respect the nature of people and things. The iGuzzini mission is therefore to study light, to know light and to make it known; improving the integration with architecture through industrial design. Because of this, a large part of what we do is to offer consultation on lighting techniques, both in the design phase and as an after-sales service. Famous architects and designers have consulted us since the very beginning iGuzzini's operations.

The Italian Quality Seal Institute (IMQ) and the European institutes are responsible for establishing the conformity of the fittings to the safety
provisions contained in the relevant standards and granting the authorization for marking the fittings with the quality seal.
The Italian Quality Seal Institute has recently introduced a new seal (IMQ Performance) which certifies the performance of products tested in certified laboratories as regards:
• photometric curves • tables of luminous intensity • diagrams of luminances • glare curves • output.
The ENEC mark certifies the conformity of the products to all the applicable European standards and guarantees the company in terms of organization and production (ISO 9001).
The presence of this mark represents the best safety and quality warranty for the end user.

Creativity and innovation
Design
Design is one of iGuzzini’s main themes. We have always kept design in mind whilst keeping up with research and innovation. Design is an investment that not only is reflected in the quality of the products we make, but it also has garnered us prestigious achievements. The ADI (Italian Industrial Design Association) has awarded us the Golden Compass three times, which is the highest honour in our industry.
The 1991 Golden Compass in particular was quite special for us because it applauded our efforts in meshing together technological innovation and the search for a formal aesthetic, making our company recognizable in today’s industry “for having developed, through time, a highly consistent design and production philosophy, in which the culture of Design has been a common denominator and mark of distinction”.

Coordinated Systems
Versatility
Experience with product technology has given us the possibility of creating coordinated and complete systems, able to satisfy all installation needs. Often, in fact, the success of a single fitting leads to an entire product family which is so complete that it is able to accomplish varied lighting and functional requirements while remaining within the realm of the same system. This allows us to ensure, and even improve, balance in a lighting design project.
The wide range of products that are available for lighting design gives us great versatility, meeting every light direction need with the security of those who have experience with quality as well as quantity. Each single product, also, thanks to the possibility of using a vast choice of lamps, different optics, and a multitude of accessories, has added value in terms of performance.
No tools required to install front frame
Accessory-holder ring (up to three flat accessories)
The clean lines and discretion that iGuzzini is renowned for also guarantee that our fittings can comply with each and every context, from classical to contemporary, without fear of contrasting with or violating the nature of the space.

Visual comfort
Easy maintenance
Fittings with visual comfort are able to remedy the unpleasant phenomenon we commonly call glare. Glare is actually one of the major indicators of an unsuccessful lighting design because it negatively impacts the look and feel of the space. This is especially true in retail. Glare is avoided by using in direct lighting systems or fittings that have louvres.
The use of complex technology in innovative fittings does not necessarily mean that maintenance procedures need to be complex as well. We can safely say that a light fixture works well in a space if it is easy to manage. Fittings used in retail spaces need to be as easy to use and maintain as they are safe.
Because of this, in many cases, we have made it possible to install our fittings easily or even without tools, without having to find specific tools that could be difficult to utilize. Keeping these special needs in mind when producing a fitting is not only synonymous with attention to detail but also with a desire to lengthen the life of our products.
Up/Down Light optic
Up Light Optic
Efficiency of reflectors The freedom to design spaces and create, through light, a particular ambiance, depends directly upon the efficiency and the variety of reflectors and optics. They also determine costs of managing the system, which are usually not considered when evaluating projects as a whole. The quality of our optics, made of ultrapure aluminium, allows us to obtain high-end lighting performance and many different lighting effects.
Technological evolution of the production process and quality controls mean we are ever more careful of avoiding wasted energy and light dispersion. This way, fittings with technologically advanced reflectors can meet the needs of designers as well as managers and end users.

Natural light, with its rhythmic daily cycle, can be considered a natural time clock, producing quantifiable psychological and biological effects on humans which vary according to luminance levels and colour temperature. Light also influences important physiological factors such as hormone production, mental alertness and mood.

Biodynamic Light Questionnaire
Sivra Project
Lighting Project
In 1988, after years of research in iGuzzini labs and in collaboration with qualified international research institutes, Sivra was born. Sivra is a general lighting system that can be programmed according to biological cycles. It reproduces the sunlight spectrum and hence natural daylight characteristics. There are many advantages. This type of lighting lets human beings, who live or work in spaces that do not have natural light, find their state of physiological efficiency and psychophysical wellbeing.
For biodynamic lighting systems, users can pre-set specific lighting programs for each space where the fittings are installed. The programme or programmes are customized via the Lighting Project, a questionnaire the client fills out so that iGuzzini can create a tailored lighting programme that will be memorized on a smart card. This way users can plan a scientifically correct lighting cycle that can be: annual, monthly, weekly, daily, hourly, in relation to usage, in relation to the space and how it’s used, in relation to the climactic conditions of the location, and many other possible variables.
Biodynamic light changes intensity and colour as the hours pass. It can obtain elevated lighting levels. A series of components is available to configure a wide array of installations.
By inserting the smart cart into the control panel, the system, based on the date and time that is set, will start the preset programme until the next manual command or until the user inserts another smart card.

Light Direction Avoiding waste, integrating natural light and artificial light, creating wellness and a welcoming ambiance, supplying the right amount of light for each special situation, creating lighting effects thanks to the mix of white light and coloured light, improving maintenance times and costs thanks to the integrated and controlled management of the system... these are just some of the advantages of using “open” systems with a DALI protocol, which are flexible and tailored to the needs of the end client.
LonWorks® technology makes it possible to create automation by managing lamps, shutters and consumption monitoring systems for an entire building. A series of DALI components is available to configure many installation systems and types.

Shops and Boutiques A shopper who is looking for an object or an item of clothing is actually on subconscious and intuitive pathway. The areas in a shop represent the stops along the way: the shop window, the first and most important entryway into the experience, is a true ticket to the shop’s presentation, portraying the image and the impact that the experience should give consumers in the blink of an eye... seductive and inviting. The display racks are containers for the merchandise; specific locations where our gazes should go, areas where the brand is personified, main vehicles of the company’s marketing philosophy, true icons of the brand’s spirit. The counter, where the buying and selling relationship happens is the connection point, a welcoming spot for shoppers.
Shop window What stands out here is not only the display of merchandise, but the veritable identity of the shop and its merchandising strategy. Therefore, light accompanies the brand image as it communicates, transcending its purely technical function and becoming a vehicle that brings out thoughts and feelings.
Spaces
General lighting General lighting is usually diffused, so that it brings out specific architectural details of the space and guarantees an optimal view of the whole, along with guaranteeing the safety of users. It offers comfortable levels of lighting without towering over individual products’ accent lighting.
Escalators & Stairwells Even though they are not directly involved in the sales areas, connection areas are important because they permit shoppers to move freely. Lighting can be direct as well as indirect and utilized to guide visitors into and out of the different spaces without dark areas in total safety.
Sales counters To bring out this special area, the true heart of a store, accent lighting is key and needs fittings with top performance characteristics to bring attention to the transactions at hand.
Branding and merchandising A point of reference for consumer gazes; merchandising carries the weight and personality of special products and should be assisted by specially and accurately designed accent lighting.
Displays Lighting that focuses on certain products needs to have top chromatic yield and ideal colour temperatures in order to bring out the value of the merchandise on display.

Malls have to therefore be very attractive yet each and every store has to have its own special character. Lighting designers have to therefore satisfy needs that are quite different from space to space. Light is the guide and the best accompaniment in these kinds of large commercial spaces, guaranteeing adjustability and able to attract clientele. Lighting is also key when creating relaxing and carefree ambiance.
Faรงade Lighting designers have a strong connection to architecture: the single parts of the space are presented and enhanced by light scenery that is a true invitation to enter and browse.
Spaces
Main area The pleasant and inviting atmosphere is the main feature of this space, a spot that is dedicated to our free time, a small oasis from daily chores. Lighting has to be extremely comfortable, but has to give each shopper the ability to choose his or her shopping route.
Functional departments In the spaces that are dedicated to commercial activities, like offices and sales counters, there has to be functional and efficient lighting on the work surfaces. Each fitting that is chosen has to fit the varied needs of the countertops and desktops.
Refreshments Food courts and refreshment areas are a true necessity when shopping. Here, lighting has to give our eyes a rest, giving us adequate visual comfort in a relaxing ambiance.
Escalators & Stairwells Fittings are chosen to supply general lighting but also to indicate a series of pathways, accompanying us on a recommended route.

Malls
Today’s malls are big buildings that house many different retailers together, giving shoppers a rich and varied array of products to choose from. Lighting systems have to therefore respond to many different lighting needs. Versatility, flexibility, and eclecticism become therefore indispensable when making light scenery.
With their dual interior and exterior adjustability, Pixel Plus recessed fittings allow us to modulate general lighting and accent lighting without interrupting the architectural linearity of the space, and guaranteeing, even for smaller fittings, optimal lighting. The discreet design and balance of the Frame series fits into any type of space.

Malls
The wish to distract and the desire to escape from our routine daily lives are the biggest reasons people chooses a mall as the place they runs to in their free time. The simple linearity of the Minimal multi-lamp fittings, the professional Le Perroquets and the adjustability of the Pixel recessed fittings create an eclectic light direction, able to
animate an architectural space, and to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere that accompanies consumers in their shopping. The use of light management systems allow us to bring natural lighting to closed spaces, coordinating light from skylights with integrated artificial light.

A modern building “contains this retail mall, which has become an attraction for the entire region. The extensive use of glass has transformed the building into a sort of large display case with almost total visibility. Lighting, therefore, is a key player in recalling and inviting customers inside.
Once inside, the Optica professional recessed fittings give off general lighting that is all-encompassing, maintaining the clean lines of the false-ceilings and eliminating overhanging elements. Frame multi-lamp recessed fittings also provide general lighting and accent lighting all at once.

This historic London location is a veritable mecca of shopping, and has always been a point of reference for Londoners as well as an attraction for tourists.
A space that holds so much history cannot break with the past, yet it must be projected toward the future. Each fitting that was chosen by the lighting designers, like Trimmer projectors, Parallel, and Gabbiano, Laser recessed fittings and the Frame multi-lamp fittings, all fit perfectly in with the diversified merchandising, ever respecting its unique identity.

This mall is actually a rich gallery of retail offerings dedicated to entertainment and relaxation. Here the multi-lamp Frame fittings are perfect for the specially-shaped false-ceiling, creating special accent lighting that rhythmically points out the path that one must follow when shopping.
In the connection areas, a Berlino pendant can offer many solutions depending on the combination one chooses: groups of four to optimize light flow, fittings that set wider apart for diffused lighting, or even in a row to mark the space rhythmically and geographically.

Right in the middle of the London shopping district, this British megastore, which has gone international, displays a wide array of clothing.
In the presence of a ceiling that is so articulate, the possibility of using coordinated fittings like double versions, pendants and recessed Pixel Plus resolves many lighting requirements, creating a perfect formal unity. The double row of Trimmer immediately identifies the lighting area, bringing out the dark colour of the ceiling base, subsequently making the rest of the surfaces even brighter.

Supermarkets At home, we care about cleanliness, food preparation, interior dĂŠcor, and table settings. As we try to manage our households in the best way possible, we need special tools that help us out with our varied daily chores. Much in the same way, lighting designers need tools to manage efficiency, versatility, practicality, maintenance, and comfort, but above all they have to enhance the special features of merchandise that is actually quite varied, in shape and in colour.
Aisles Lighting has to signal direction and pathways. It has to be specially designed to make grocery shopping pleasant, quick, and efficient. Lighting also has to give a clear and complete panorama of all the displays.
Spaces
Delicatessen Light absolves the difficult task of making merchandise look scrumptious. Via the use of special chromatic filters, specially designed for each type of food, freshness and fragrance become the key display features. Because just as in any kitchen, presentation is just as important as taste.
Check in/Check out Light contributes to making these areas pleasant, to call attention to a small number of featured products, and to make sales clerk’s job easier.
Non food The most important issue when lighting non-food items is how to emphasize shapes, colours, and materials by choosing just the right light fixtures.
Fruits and Vegetables The uniqueness of this merchandise is its colour. Sometimes the coloured merchandise is set against other contrasting colours. Therefore, it is very important that there be uniform lighting that guarantees a comprehensive viewing of the space and a colour temperature (°K) that can adapt to the merchandise on display.

Marks & Spencer is the most well-known English supermarket, celebrated the world over with stores in more than 30 different nations. The store has a wide range of merchandise from clothing to food to furniture and accessories for the home.
To light merchandise that is so heterogeneous, there have to be fittings that are capable of bringing out the light and dark elements of varied products. A combination of Pixel Plus adjustable fittings and professional Optica fittings guarantees that the stores have general and accent lighting all at once.

The new modern-day concept of Supermarkets is a creation of a sales floor that is able to bestow a sense of carefree relaxation. In the refreshment area of this supermarket, Le Perroquet fittings have the dual direct and in direct lighting so that they can perfectly respond to the varied lighting needs of the space, generating pleasant and natural light that is complementary to the light seeping in from the skylights.
In the aisles, pendants like Berlino can be adapted to the industrial nature of the display area. The modular Trimmer recessed fittings give off an extremely eclectic light emission: functional yet discrete, the Trimmer spots have the advantage of having extractable and orientable optical assemblies.

Automotive displays Cars have always been objects we desire. Because of the importance of the purchase of this nature, automotive displays and showrooms have a very strong emotional impact. Car Showrooms have the unique ability to transcend from the purely commercial buying and selling relationship with consumers and actually take on the semblance of a museum dedicated to design. To do this, the automobiles on display need to be opportunely lit, with light shining down onto shapes and colours and onto parts that reflect light, so that the cars become brilliant. The artificial light also needs to interact with sunlight that streams in from the outside because most of these spaces have wide window expanses.
Faรงade Just like large pieces of jewellery, automobiles gleam when they are on display. The faรงades of showrooms therefore become a luxury showcase just like a large-scale boutique, where products seductively displayed and details and emphasized.
Spaces
Lighting effects There are areas in car showrooms where light needs to accomplish true light scenery in order to enhance particular special features.
Accent lighting Single light fittings can create lighting effects with light beams that are directed onto the more exclusive models.
General lighting The right amount of diffused lighting guarantees a lighting base, and eliminates reflection from the automobiles, creating a pleasant and welcoming space.
Objects and accessories As the size of the merchandise changes, lighting also needs to adapt so that it can still focus onto objects that are smaller in size.
Functional departments Functional spaces need to have visual comfort, because these are locations where the biggest portion of commercial activities takes place.

For their Munich showroom, this luxury automobile manufacturer has chosen an iron/glass structure with an elliptical base that is quite striking. The Linealuce fittings, installed on the base of the tower in the cavity wall of the building create a sort of “sidewalk of light. The building looks like a glass workshop and its beauty is enhanced even more by fittings with elliptical refractors, which amplify the light flow.

provisions contained in the relevant standards and granting the authorization for marking the fittings with the quality seal.
