PROJECT 1

MINIMAL LETTERFORMS Close examination of the unique characteristics of a specific typeface and the aspects of composition.

TRACE AND STUDY OF LETTERFORMS I experimented with helvetica and memphis for their straight lines and serifs. I figured the straight lines could create interesting curves and would be easier to connect throughout the compositon of four boxes.

ENLARGE AND REFINE I decided to stick with helvetica for its straight lines and even widths. I enjoyed connecting the lines through the four boxes. For the last compositon I played with similar bends to create an abstract image.

FINAL COMPOSITIONS I chose to turn in two final pieces because I couldn’t decide on one. The SAFK piece for the curves of the S and A. The KNYZ piece for the image created with the connecting straight lines.

PROJECT 2

TYPE HEIRARCHY Explore compositional alternatives with a provided set of information and rules. Font family: Univers

SET 1: CUT & PASTE To start experimenting with type, we cut each line of text so could begin to play with composition and organization of information. I decided to use a grid of lines to organize the bulk of information and then align other sets in different directions to lead the eye left and right throughout the document. For the second composition, I attempted to reduce the amount of repeated information. However, I learned that we couldn’t do that. So, though it was one of my more liked compositions, it had to be scratched.

Set 1A

Set 1B

SET 1: ONE SIZE + OBLIQUE For set 1A, since we were only allowed to use one size and no other weights, I decided to stick with using a grid to organize the information. For set 1B, since we could use a bold type, I chose to bold the titles to create contrast between the information.

SET 2: TWO SIZES + OBLIQUE For set 3 since we could use any kind of rule, I decided to use blocks of black to divide the spaces. I used different weights and capitals to create a heirarchy of the information.

To revise, I adjusted line spacing to help guide the eye from line to line. I switched up the use of italics to create contrast and differentation between information.

SET 3: ANY SIZE, WEIGHT & RULE For set 3 since we could use any kind of rule, I decided to use blocks of black to divide the spaces. I used different weights and capitals to create a heirarchy of the information.

I eliminated the bottom block to prevent the space looking like a sandwich. I moved the dates to a side vertical position to help separate the information.

PROJECT 3

BOOK DESIGN Compose image and text for a book: Paul Rand: Design and the Play instinct.

DESIGN PROCESS I started off by chosing the smallest document size possible but adding 1 inch to the height to avoid a square book. Then, I decided I would use blocks of color to separate spaces. After that I laid out the cover and decided on a spot color.

IMAGE

SPREAD/GRID I organized the text and images according to a master grid of blocks. If the images were large, I placed them inside the dark blocks and if the images were small, I juxtaposed them accordingly to the text.

FINAL BOOK DESIGN The final book was printed on a heavy paper and a wrap around cover. Hand bound using a perfect bind.
