A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Upcoming Events Jump Rope for Heart (Weeks 5 to 10)

Parent Teacher Interview Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd of June

Assalamu alaykum Dear parents and carers This week saw the conclusion of National Reconciliation Week (NRW). A time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Throughout the week, our students learned about NRW and completed activities in their classrooms. Our teachers have been working very hard, writing student academic reports in preparation for our parent teacher interviews on Monday 21st June from 3.30pm to 8.30pm. Parents are reminded that parent teacher interviews are mandatory and at least one parent or carer of the child must attend. If you are unable to make it on the day, please organise an alternate meeting time with your child's teacher. Bookings are open now via the Sentral parent portal. This week was photo day and I would like to thank families for their efforts in ensuring students were presentable and in full school uniform. If you were unable to send in your photo envelope, you are able to purchase school photos online at the school photographers website https://www.theschoolphotographer.com.au/ Have a safe and restful weekend. Kind regards Jennie Harold Head of Junior School

MRS STEVENSON DEPUTY HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL Dear Junior School Families,

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Week 8 At Bellfield we wear our school uniform with pride.

This week our Positive Behaviour for Learning focus was “At Bellfield we move sensibly around the school.” Mr Todd wrote a poem for students to enjoy and memorise and this morning we heard 7 students recite this poem at our Junior School assembly. They did a wonderful job and we all enjoyed their recitations. These students have each received a gift voucher to spend at the canteen. Well done to our winners: Abbas Mahdi Maisami, Zaynab Karnib, Maryam Karnib, Sania Noori, Muhammad Hassan Hyder, Yusra Karnib! Kind regards, Mrs Natalie Stevenson

NEWS FROM 5T This term in Science and Technology, students have been studying the Science of sport. This is an engaging and hands-on unit that enables them to explore the forces involved in a range of different sports. Working both independently and collaboratively, students are provided the opportunity to design and execute fair tests and work through the scientific process. Students create questions, predict outcomes, and collect, record and analyse the data from each investigation. One of our most recent investigations involved students testing the forces of gravity, as well as reflecting on momentum and energy when bouncing different balls. Students brainstormed how to make this a fair test, and how to transfer momentum and energy to each ball through different variables. Students loved being outside and putting their theory into action. “It was interesting to find out that momentum and energy transferred to the basketball can cause the tennis ball to bounce much higher” said Zakaria. Maria also was able to reflect on her learning, saying “I love Science and after learning about fair testing it was great to be able to go outside and do an experiment.” The enjoyment by all was summed up by Israa, who added “I love going outside and doing experiments. It was great to make predictions and learn whilst having fun.” Mr Todd and his amazing class are already looking forward to more experiments in the world of Science.

LEARNING QURAN IN YEAR 1

Dear Parents, Al Salam Alykhom

I like to share with our parents the talented year 1 students, they are talented in Quran recitation and memorisation, they know a several surahs and know the rules of the ayats they recited, regardless of their young age. This term year 1 students were given a class activity to cut each ayah and put the them in correct order. Students did exceptionally well and were able to complete the activity correctly. Despite the difficulty of surah and the task, students demonstrated their understanding by putting the Qur’anic verses in correct order. They were able to read the verses with correct pronunciation. A job well done to Year 1 Quran students. Mrs Al Rekabi Quran/Arabic Teacher

RECOGNISING AND SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH ANXIETY WEBINAR

Have you wondered if your child has too much anxiety? Do they seem: • Clingy • Worried about little things • Shy away from their friends • Unable to try new activities • Overly concerned about things that may happen or go wrong. Perhaps many of those fears are dominating their thoughts and your family discussions. Many families are caught in an anxiety dance, where it seems everyone is moving around to the tune of whatever the current worry is – and it can be exhausting, debilitating and concerning all at the same time. If this sounds like your family dynamic, then you are not alone. In any given year as many as 1 in 10 children will have anxiety symptoms sufficient for an anxiety disorder diagnosis. In this presentation, the causes and contributors to childhood anxiety are discussed along with practical ideas and recommendations for interventions and more satisfying relationships with your anxious child. Parents will learn how to reduce the anxiety dance and bring harmony back to their home and their childs’ world. Who is this suitable for? The webinar is suitable for all parents, carers, grandparents, extended family members and anyone who has a close relationship with children aged between 3 to 11 years. Everyone is welcome to participate in this webinar. Your privacy is our priority. Your surname will not be used or registered for the webinar. Event details Date: Thursday, 24 June 2021. Time: 7pm to 9pm AEST. Price: $60 per person, including GST. Speaker: Heather Irvine-Rundle, clinical psychologist and director of The Read Clinic. Location: Online webinar. Registered guests will receive an email with webinar details the week prior to the presentation. NSW PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE Dear Parents and carers, What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge? The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The PRC is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. Students must read a certain number of books to complete the Challenge. Upon successful completion of the Challenge, students will be eligible for a PRC certificate in Term 4. When is the challenge? The 2021 Challenge opened to students on Monday March 1, 2021 and will close on Friday August 20, 2021. How does my child sign up? Students will receive their login shortly from their class teacher. Students will use their login to access their online profile and log the books they read online. What should my child read? Please encourage your children to read the books that have been shortlisted on the website prc@det.nsw.edu.au . Students can borrow books from the College library. Also, a trip to your local library is always a nice way to ensure you have the correct books, as they are easy to find. By encouraging and engaging all our students to partake in this initiative we hope to develop a greater love for reading and to further improve their literacy and vocabulary skills. If you need help using the website and the answer cannot be found on the PRC Support site, please contact us at the College on 9606 2666. Warm Regards Miss Balloot K-6 Literacy and Numeracy Instructional Leader
