ILLUMINATIONS ACTIVITIES IN TERM 2

Salaamun Alaykum dearest parents,

This term Stage 3 were grouped in 4’s to make an imaginary project and were told to present to the class by completing certain tasks to which they did will due diligence and presented well in front of the class. One task was to come up with reasons of choosing the ‘right source of knowledge’ to help them achieve the objectives of their imaginary project as a demonstration in real life whereby the source of information must be trustworthy to be able to solve any problems and finding solutions. An example given was asking doctors to assist with physical ailments whereas as a Marja’ (jurist) is consulted for religious issues and not anyone else. They enjoyed the process and the group work and truly helped them in their reasoning, which is the basic underlying requirement to understand our Journey towards our Creator to reach our perfection. Class 6B (left) is seen here presenting their project to their fellow peers with great focus and concentration.

Year 5P (right) is seen here presenting with great enthusiasm and energy. They were explaining their tasks really well.

The concept of the activity was based on the democratic decision making of the honeybees which is critical in their survival in nature and the students were taught several moral lessons based on a honeybee’s life which is worthy of reflection especially when journeying towards our Creator. Insha-Allah I hope to assist them on this amazing journey towards perfection to our Creator, for as long as I can. Wassalaaam, Brother Ammar

TECHNOLOGY: PAST AND PRESENT

Assalamu alykum, Dear parents,

On Thursday 9th June Stage 1 took part in an engaging, hands on History Incursion all about families and technology in the past and the present. The students looked at how life was like in the 1920’s, 1950’s, 1980’s and the 2000’s. They had the opportunity to play with many toys and games that were used in the past such as dominoes, skipping ropes and marbles. They were also able to observe many different pieces of equipment that families used in the past such as typewriters, cameras, laptops, cassettes, boom boxes and record players. They compared these items to what we use these days. Students dressed up in different outfits from the past and described what they saw comparing it to the outfits they wear today. Here is what some of our Stage 1 students had to say about the incursion: Ali Haidar 2A: I really enjoyed playing with the toys in the past. I learnt about the past and present. Things in the past are different to now in the present. Aftash Hussain 2M: I learnt about family trees. I enjoyed the activities and looking at the old photos. Sarah Dhahir 1M: I liked how we all played together. I learnt how the people in the olden days used to communicate and what they used to wear. I enjoyed playing with the pocket watch and writing with the ink and quill. Serene Koopaei 1A: I learnt that in all the years that we looked at the things were getting better and they were using technology more. I liked that we got to play the games and throw the hoops. I enjoyed writing ‘hi’ on the typewriter. Yusuf Keshvani 1C: I enjoyed comparing the different technology from the past. I also enjoyed answering the questions. I like looking at the frying pan and also the measuring scales.

VISUAL ARTS IN 3A

This term in visual arts students have been exploring the different elements artists use to create artworks. The theme has been Transport Transformations which has allowed students to integrate their geography, mathematics and visual arts knowledge to create a rich learning experience. We have looked at the elements of shape and line, and how these are used in artworks to achieve certain effects. Students explored and learned about the different transport vehicles. They then had to get creative and create a mash-up of two vehicles. They used their creative and critical thinking skills to analyse their mash-ups discussing the possible uses of the vehicle as well as other features and properties. As a final project, students created a 3D model of a vehicle using recycled materials. 3A students have really impressed with their creation and have shown a high level of creativity and attention to detail. The process began with looking for inspirations. After they decided what vehicle they would like to create, they all planned their 3D models by sketching their ideas and listing materials they needed. The final step was to put it together, through which most students received much great support at home. A big thank you to the wonderful parents who have supported their children creating such magnificent designs! Students were very excited and enjoyed presenting their designs to their peers. They took pride in their effort and achievement and showed a high level of confidence. Way to go 3A! Kindest Regards, Mrs Thamer

RECOGNISING AND SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH ANXIETY WEBINAR

Have you wondered if your child has too much anxiety? Do they seem: • Clingy • Worried about little things • Shy away from their friends • Unable to try new activities • Overly concerned about things that may happen or go wrong. Perhaps many of those fears are dominating their thoughts and your family discussions. Many families are caught in an anxiety dance, where it seems everyone is moving around to the tune of whatever the current worry is – and it can be exhausting, debilitating and concerning all at the same time. If this sounds like your family dynamic, then you are not alone. In any given year as many as 1 in 10 children will have anxiety symptoms sufficient for an anxiety disorder diagnosis. In this presentation, the causes and contributors to childhood anxiety are discussed along with practical ideas and recommendations for interventions and more satisfying relationships with your anxious child. Parents will learn how to reduce the anxiety dance and bring harmony back to their home and their childs’ world. Who is this suitable for? The webinar is suitable for all parents, carers, grandparents, extended family members and anyone who has a close relationship with children aged between 3 to 11 years. Everyone is welcome to participate in this webinar. Your privacy is our priority. Your surname will not be used or registered for the webinar. Event details Date: Thursday, 24 June 2021. Time: 7pm to 9pm AEST. Price: $60 per person, including GST. Speaker: Heather Irvine-Rundle, clinical psychologist and director of The Read Clinic. Location: Online webinar. Registered guests will receive an email with webinar details the week prior to the presentation. NSW PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE Dear Parents and carers, What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge? The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The PRC is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. Students must read a certain number of books to complete the Challenge. Upon successful completion of the Challenge, students will be eligible for a PRC certificate in Term 4. When is the challenge? The 2021 Challenge opened to students on Monday March 1, 2021 and will close on Friday August 20, 2021. How does my child sign up? Students will receive their login shortly from their class teacher. Students will use their login to access their online profile and log the books they read online. What should my child read? Please encourage your children to read the books that have been shortlisted on the website prc@det.nsw.edu.au . Students can borrow books from the College library. Also, a trip to your local library is always a nice way to ensure you have the correct books, as they are easy to find. By encouraging and engaging all our students to partake in this initiative we hope to develop a greater love for reading and to further improve their literacy and vocabulary skills. If you need help using the website and the answer cannot be found on the PRC Support site, please contact us at the College on 9606 2666. Warm Regards Miss Balloot K-6 Literacy and Numeracy Instructional Leader
