VOLUME 9 • MARCH 26 2021

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL Assalamu Alaykum Dearest Bellfield families,

Upcoming Events 28th March Annual Walkathon

Last Day of Term1 1st of April

First Day of Term 2 19th of April

Week 3 1st round of SRC class speeches

18th February Parent Information Evening

What a colourful and busy week we have had here at Bellfield College Junior School! This week we welcomed the team from Action Education to the College to present their acrobatic performance ‘Backflips against bullying’. The team engaged our students with content specific to developing resilience, cyber-bullying, physical, verbal and social harassment, the consequences of our actions and acknowledging our mistakes and making a change. Our students enjoyed every minute of the performance. Year 6 also ran a successful cake stall this week, raising much needed funds for their Year 6 farewell. Year 6 will be hosting another cake stall at our Annual Walkathon, this Sunday 28th March at the College from 10am. We look forward to welcoming you to the school for this fun filled family day out. Student Behaviour I would like to remind parents of the importance of speaking with your children at home about expected behaviours at school. Keeping our school clean and tidy is very important. This week I addressed all students in Years 3 - 6 about looking after the school toilets and making sensible choices. There has been an increased level of vandalism and misuse of school property in the junior school toilets, which is very disappointing. I seek your support in talking with your children about the importance of cleanliness, looking after school property, and reporting any misbehavior or vandalism they might witness to a teacher. Students found mistreating school property will be managed as per the student discipline policy. Possible consequences may result in suspension from school.

MRS STEVENSON DEPUTY HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Week 9 Focus At Bellfield we take care of our equipment and toys.

Assalamu Alaykum Dear Parents, We had a special visitor in Junior School this week. A Rainbow Lorikeet was found in the K-2 Quad. It appeared injured and needed a lot of extra care and protection. As we looked after the bird it gave us an opportunity to appreciate nature and God’s creation. I am happy to report that the bird has made a full recovery! Parent Helpers and Volunteers As Covid-19 restrictions continue to lift we would like to welcome parents to volunteer across the Junior School in a variety of ways. Research has shown that parents who take an active role in their child’s school life increase their child’s ability to learn and have a positive effect on academic achievement. At Bellfield College we encourage parents to actively support student learning by becoming involved in a range of school and classroom activities and greatly appreciate the parents and community members who assist and support our programs.

NEWS FROM KB It is hard to believe that only 9 weeks ago Kindergarten arrived at Bellfield College, full of excitement, nerves and trepidation (teachers and parents included). In just a short time, KB has already learnt so much. They have learnt how to pack and unpack their bags, how to sit calmly and follow instructions, how to cut and glue in their books, how to share equipment, how to catch and throw a ball, how to count to 20, how to hold a pencil, how to play heads down, thumbs up, how to clap syllables in words and so much more…

Just last Tuesday, KB students took part in Clean Up Australia Day where they helped clean up the school playground placing rubbish in bins. Kindy students did a great job and were all excited to clean up using their gloves.

NEWS FROM KB

KB students also went to their first Healthy Harold visit and met Harold and his friends. KB learnt all about friendships and how to keep themselves safe by always staying with an adult.

A number of KB students have also received merits for their outstanding work in the classroom. They are trying really hard to collect Bellbirds for remembering to keep safe on the playground, be respectful to all students and teachers and to be great learners in class. KB students should be SUPER PROUD of themselves for all of the wonderful things they have learnt thus far. Miss Barron KB Teacher

Happy Harmony Day

NSW PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE Dear Parents and carers, What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge? The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The PRC is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. Students must read a certain number of books to complete the Challenge. Upon successful completion of the Challenge, students will be eligible for a PRC certificate in Term 4. When is the challenge? The 2021 Challenge opened to students on Monday March 1, 2021 and will close on Friday August 20, 2021. How does my child sign up? Students will receive their login shortly from their class teacher. Students will use their login to access their online profile and log the books they read online. What should my child read? Please encourage your children to read the books that have been shortlisted on the website prc@det.nsw.edu.au . Students can borrow books from the College library. Also, a trip to your local library is always a nice way to ensure you have the correct books, as they are easy to find. By encouraging and engaging all our students to partake in this initiative we hope to develop a greater love for reading and to further improve their literacy and vocabulary skills. If you need help using the website and the answer cannot be found on the PRC Support site, please contact us at the College on 9606 2666. Warm Regards Miss Balloot K-6 Literacy and Numeracy Instructional Leader

Assalamu Alaykum Dear parents,

HARMONY DAY

Due to heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday, Harmony Day was held on Wednesday the 24th of March instead. It was so great to come back to school and see the orange decorations, and the children in their orange or cultural dresses!

Harmony Day is a time where we are reminded that everyone belongs no matter their race or gender. It is a day where we celebrate inclusiveness and respect and celebrate our differences. On Harmony Day we wear orange as it represents freedom of ideas, respect and meaningful communication!

The children were able to express themselves through their cultural outfits and it really showed just how multicultural Bellfield is - demonstrating to the children that we are all the same but different! The children also did some amazing, colourful artworks in class as part of the Harmony Day celebrations and were displayed for others to see. What a great day it was! Kind regards, The Harmony Day Team
