Inquisitive Minds Inquisitive Minds Run Rampant This morning Years 9 and 10 participated in the Problems, Patterns, Pictures, Puzzles (PPPP) workshops run by Inquisitive Minds. Students engaged in a series of interactive puzzle solving exercises using Mathematics to compete against one another. Questions drew upon student’s understanding of statistics, probability and algebra to race against the clock and their peers – earning points for each challenge. In the first half of each workshop students were given the opportunity to warm up their skills with gradually more difficult problems to prepare themselves for the final competition in the second half. In the final competition, students were presented with a table filled with challenges ranging from easy to hard. Classes were split resulting in 5.3 students competing against their classmates and 5.2 and 5.1 students competing across classes. Students could either chase smaller sweet treats by aiming for specific questions in the chocolate challenge or aim for the main prize by earning the most points. It was fantastic to see the how eager the students were to apply themselves to a challenge worthy of their skills. Mr Owen Gates

Sport @ Bellfield College PDHPE Winter & Physical Activity According to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Physical activity levels for kids ages 2 to elderly 65 years an over, needs to be implemented in a daily plan. Students between the ages of 12 – 18 needs to experience at least 30-60 minutes of vigorous physical activity levels daily. As winter has come, it will become harder to experience physical activity outdoors. But this should not stop families from doing indoor activities. Families have the options to hit the local pools, attend specific age group classes at fitness centres, or even hire out a court and play a variety of sports. Either way, Bellfield has you covered with a few exercises that you can experience at home as a family during these cold winter nights. Please be mindful that you will need to have some space or go to the nearest park with your family to complete these activities presented over the next few weeks. Have handy a stopwatch, water bottle and towel. 3……...2……...1……...BEGIN!!! ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
High knees running on the spot (30 seconds as fast as possible) 20 sit ups (knees bent, feet flat on the ground, hands on chest) High knees running on the spot (30 seconds as fast as possible) 14 lunges (7 each leg, knee just touching the ground, slow with downwards movement and fast moving upwards, back straight up and not slouching) ✓ High knees running on the spot (30 seconds as fast as possible) ✓ Squats (feet shoulder length apart, bend knees till your bottom has touched the ground, explode up to standing position) Repeat all the above 3 times with a 2mintes rest between each set. Stay safe and Have Fun…. GOOD LUCK!!

HSIE What’s Been Happening in the World of HSIE Students studied hard prior to their half yearly exams across all year groups and subjects within the HSIE classes. Students will shortly receive their results for their efforts as all HSIE teachers finish off the markings and are eager to share the wonderful results with the students. A Glimpse into the classrooms of HSIE: Year 7 have continued learning the topic of ‘Place and Liveability’ where they are able to build their own perceptions of different places which includes their own local communities. Year 8 have ‘Inter-connected’ themselves with the current topic at hand. With technology being a driving force, students have been able to see the impacts and affects from the rapid advancements. Year 9 continues to dissect different ‘Changing Places’. From Internal migration to International migration. Students have been able to identify different Push and Pull factors that cause these movements. Year 10 have finalised their ‘Human Wellbeing’ topic and transitioned to their History content with such enthusiasm. The first part of the History course will be having an overview of the Modern World and Australia after World War Two. This included students engaging in a research task to find out what it means to be a ‘Global Citizen’. (See image) The wonderful world of Commerce this term has enriched students' knowledge about different aspects required to run a business. This included a virtual ‘Lemonade stand’ where students either worked as ‘Sole Traders’ or as ‘Partners’ to sell the most lemonade and make the most profit. (See images). Mr Fawaz.

Teach kids not to jump to conclusions Many children jump to conclusions when an unpleasant situation occurs, thinking and acting impulsively rather than thinking rationally before reacting. (This is not just the domain of kids, by the way!) While these snap judgements may be justified, in reality they are the least likely to be the right ones. For example, imagine a boy walking across a schoolyard when he’s hit in the face by a football. He automatically thinks someone is trying to hurt him, basing his conclusion on the fact that he has been on the receiving end of some rough treatment in the past. He is angry and starts a fight with the boy who kicked the ball, with both of them ending up in trouble.
Don’t react, hit the pause button instead In contrast, if the boy had paused to think before reacting, he may have drawn quite a different conclusion. He might have looked at the person who kicked the ball and, knowing that boy’s general skill level, understood that the most likely scenario was that it was just an accident. In fact, the chances of the boy deliberately aiming at and successfully hitting him were very slim. He would have laughed and kept walking, or joined in the game. Imagine a girl waiting outside a shop for her friends. They are late, and after ten minutes the girl gets annoyed, concluding that her friends have ditched her – they had tricked her into going to the shops and were never going to meet her; they just wanted to make a fool of her! She sends them an angry text message and goes home in a huff. This is classic pessimistic thinking – the type that often spirals out of control, leaving a person feeling physically and emotionally exhausted. If, instead of jumping to conclusions, this girl had slowed down and thought through the possibilities, she would have realised there were lots of quite reasonable scenarios causing her friends to be late. Perhaps they had missed their bus, or they got stuck in traffic. Maybe they got on the wrong bus. The buses always ran late anyway. Instead of her angry text message she could simply have sent a questioning one, wondering if her friends were okay. She could even have called them!
Resilience is a skill Slowing down your thinking and avoiding jumping to conclusions is a great resilience skill that can be improved with practice. As a parent, you can model this type of thinking, reciting the possibilities out loud so your kids can see how it’s done. If you are the type of parent who instantly assumes the worst and builds mountains out of molehills, this practice could help you as well. (Don’t forget to do this when making judgements about your children’s behaviour too!) It can be challenging to think rationally in our modern lives. The propensity of the media to focus on sensationalism and worst case scenarios in many news items doesn’t help – they simply normalise the practice of catastrophising. “The worst recession in years…”, “Record drought figures…”, “Poll figures spell defeat for the government” – you know, the attention-grabbing headlines. But neither we as adults, nor our kids, need to think this way. We can think differently, reach our own conclusions, and teach our kids to do the same.

Granville TAFE are running courses in semester 2 of 2021 and in 2022, these courses are equivalent to Year 10 Year 11 and HSC. 1. Certificate 2 in Further Study Skills which is considered a Year 10 equivalent and runs for 6 months July to November. It is great for students who may be struggling to complete Year 10 at school and is very useful for those who are keen to get an apprenticeship or to use it as a pathway to other TAFE courses such as Hair and Beauty or IT. We also have students who have completed this course go on to complete our Year 11 and 12 equivalent courses. 2. Certificate 3 in Pathways to Further Study which is a year 11 equivalent (July –November) and can be used to pathway into the Certificate 4 in Tertiary Preparation next year. 3. Certificate 4 in Tertiary Preparation this course is a university entry program and provides students with an ATAR. (February – November). 4.
Higher School Certificate this course is suitable for those students who wants to do HSC in 1 year or if you want to improve on your existing ATAR you can study the HSC at TAFE choosing 1 or more subjects. The first three courses are free and I have attached a flier with the details of information sessions we will be holding. At TAFE we aim to provide an alternative to school for students who may respond to an adult learning environment. We have support for disabilities and small classes.

Suspension A suspension from school is offered to students as a last resort or for a breach of College rules. Students can be suspended from school from anywhere between 2 - 3 days. The length of time is dependent upon a number of variables and is at the discretion of the CEO/Principal. An immediate suspension will be given to a student who: swears at a teacher, engages in physical fighting, violence directed toward a person, steals from someone or engages in immoral behaviour. Other behaviours may also result in suspension at the CEO/Principal’s discretion and include vandalism, high level bullying, an ongoing accumulation of issues and an inability to demonstrate improved behaviour. Chewing gum = immediate suspension from school. Students were informed during morning assembly, grade meets and prayer meets: If a student is seen chewing gum / has chewing gum in their mouth or other, the teacher will report this to the year advisor immediately via Sentral incidents. There are no exceptions, no negotiation, and no flexibility. Mobile Phones Our College is a student phone free zone. Mobile phones MUST be placed in the school bag and switched off before entering school grounds, this includes before the 8.30am bell and after the home time bell. If seen, heard or used on school grounds devices will be confiscated immediately and held for two weeks. Please note that this also includes mobile phone devices such as Air Pods and headsets.
