THE BOTANICAL GARDENS SPECIAL EDITION Thank you for observing our special edition Botanical Gardens magazine. This time what we’re going to be focusing on is not just focusing points but we’re also going to be focusing on lighting and how it affects the mood of the photo. Each student was given special teachings to use during the time that we were in the Botanical Gardens. The task they had to complete was to find and work with their aperture as well as specific styles of lighting. Although they were given these tasks, you can see that each student applies the techniques they have learned to their photos in unique ways. Also in this issue we are also going to be focusing on certain classes during the Leap afternoon program. We will be spotlighting visual arts and European handball/soccer. JBA please sit back and enjoy the photos as well as their writings.

ORALES My favorite part of going to the Botanical Gardens is going inside the conservatory getting to see the beautiful flowers. Seeing some ready to bloom, seeing the nice sculpture there in the middle and getting to learn new techniques with the camera. Getting to feel the different temperatures of each flowers environment was interesting. Knowing the right angle and the right lighting will make for an amazing photo. Last, seeing new flowers, learning their names and getting to discover new things.
What I was looking for is the petals alone. Getting the smallest details. Taking that one flower out in the rest of the flowers and isolating it to let the viewers see that what really makes that flower amazing. What is really behind that whole flower is not as important as the flower right there. The lighting is very important.
Knowing where your lightest part of the flower is and what is the darkest part finding the right place to put your focusing point.

Seeing these beautiful flowers makes you understand how important it is to keep them safe. Just to leave them as they are! The flowers are all different, very fragile, they can get damaged. As a photographer, you see these flowers as something else when you take these shots. Your viewers will see it different as well. You are not just seeing this flower as only a flower but a beautiful living thing on this planet. Mia Morales

My favorite part about the botanical was the plants and taking pictures of them. I wanted focus on both close ups and wide angle shots.
But most of my shots were close ups. It’s important to preserve these plants because you want them to look good, so make them stand out from others in your photo.

S T A C LIGHTING
CY TRAN My favorite part about going to the Botanical Garden is the courtyard of the conservatory where the pond is. I like the pond because the water, lilies and the fish make it so relaxing to take photos of. Another part of the Botanical Garden that was my favorite is the Sakura trees. (AKA Cherry Blossom tree). I like the Sakura trees because of the beautiful spring theme in they bring. I was looking for closeups, focusing point, and lighting.
I was looking for close-ups because I want to clear my quest of finding some good shallow depth of field in my shots. Also, the focusing point helped improve the lighting of each of my photos. Last, I was trying to improve the way I was my holding the camera. Speaking of lighting, I want to improve the lighting because I had trouble with lighting since most of my photos were overexposed.
The Park displayed its importance of preserving these plants. You can clearly see how plants been taken care of. For example, the colors were still showing. Also, the plants were in good condition such as not making the flowers wilt. Another thing is that the plants are kept in their right conditions. What I mean by that is that the plants are put in their correct habitat. The cacti, carnivorous plants, etc. belong in the desert habitat. The flowers, trees, etc. are mostly in the grasslands. E FERREIRA Something that made me happy about being at the Botanical Gardens was that I did my favorite thing, take photos. What I was particularly looking for in my shots was the lighting being equal on the subject. For example, the subject must not be too light or too dark.
The importance of the flowers at the Botanical Gardens is that people need that type of beauty in their life. When people see flowers, they think of happiness and how beautiful it is.

SPOT LIGHTS ON.... VISUAL ARTS During this trimester of the year, we have changed our topic to Masks. We have also created inspiring encounters with art that expand the ways we see ourselves, the world, and its possibilities. We have also discovered ancient art that was used for important rituals or celebratory reasons. We also found interest in this unit because this creates an environment that values hard work, professionalism, accountability, creativity, and achievement. Kamybelle Rodriguez Scholar in Visual Arts
SOCCER AND EUROPEAN HA My experience in soccer has helped me a lot. First, becuase it improved my my aim when I’m passing the ball or shooting. Also, it improved my stamina in running, planks and the strength in doing more push-ups and curl-ups. In addition, it helped me build strength, my fleibility, and endurance. In conclusion, my soccer experience has helped me improve my fitness level and my health. Gladis Flores
