Plant And Office Locations
Creation of Bellingham Marine Bellingham Marine has a long history starting in the Northwest region of the United States. Located in the heart of Bellingham, Washington, the company’s origins date back to 1928 when it was incorporated under the name of Bellingham Builders Supply, Inc. In 1954, Gaasland Construction purchased Bellingham Builders Supply and a few years later, they obtained the manufacturing rights to the patented concrete Unifloat® product. Among the first Unifloat® projects, started in the 1950’s was the Port of Seattle’s Shilshole Marina. It gained immediate attention. This 1,500 slip double-berth marina became the standard by which marinas were measured and served its customers well right up until its replacement in 2005; at which time it was rebuilt by Bellingham Marine. The replacement of Shilshole was as much due to slip reconfiguration as wear and tear on the docks – in fact, many of the original docks were resold to other nearby marinas. Increased demand in the 70’s led Bellingham Marine to establish a manufacturing facility in California in 1977. Establishment of facilities in California allowed for expanded sales and production for the entire west coast, from Alaska to Mexico. In the early 1980’s, the company’s name was officially changed from Bellingham Builder’s Supply to Bellingham Marine Industries to reflect the company’s focus on Unifloat® production and marina construction. Eager to expand its US operations, in January 1985, Bellingham Marine acquired Florida Floats, Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida, which formerly operated as a licensee for the Unifloat® product in the Southeastern U.S.
4
Global Expansion Over the next ten years Bellingham Marine continued to grow and expand its operations. During this time BMI continued to broaden its scope of work venturing deeper into wave attenuators, freshwater systems, megayacht centers and dry storage facilities. It was during this period that BMI brought the world’s attention to its capabilities. During this time several high profile projects were designed and built – including the world’s only floating golf green in Coeur d’Alene Idaho; the Harbour Town Yacht Basin on Hilton Head Island, SC, Elliot Bay Marina in Seattle, WA, and the Americas Cup Basin in Auckland, New Zealand. The 90’s marked a time of international expansion. In 1990, Nishida Tekko Corporation of Japan became a Bellingham Marine licensee serving customers in Japan. In 1996, the company bought back its license in Australia and in 1997 consolidated its position with the purchase of the assets of Pacific Marinas. A factory and a head office were established in Brisbane along with sales and project management offices in Sydney and Melbourne. Within two years, Bellingham Marine Australia had grown to be the dominant marina builder in Australia. In 1998, Bellingham Marine expanded its business to New Zealand through purchase of the marina construction assets of its former licensee, Fletcher Construction. A factory and a head office were established in Auckland and like their mates across the Tasman Sea, dominated New Zealand and Pacific Island markets. In 1997, Bellingham Marine expanded its US operations. Concrete Floatation Systems, a Northeastern U.S.A. licensee was bought back; a fully staffed operating division and manufacturing facility was established in York, Pennsylvania. This new division completed Bellingham Marine’s plan to provide its extensive services along the entire eastern coast of the United States plus Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. Satisfied with its operations in the US, Australia, and New Zealand; Bellingham Marine entered the new millennium with its eyes set on further international expansion. In 2003, Bellingham Marine Europe was established and later that same year Bellingham Marine Southeast Asia. Both took on major projects within their first year. Bellingham Marine Europe won its first project at Port Forum in 2004 and Bellingham Marine Southeast Asia won its first in Penang, Malaysia. In 2004, Septech Emirates, was established as a licensee and was granted the rights to produce Bellingham Marine’s products in the Middle East. Further expansion came in 2005 with the establishment of Bellingham Marine Mexico. In 2006, Bellingham Marine Spain was incorporated into the Bellingham Marine Group enabling the company to operate as a local contractor in Spain. Bellingham Marine Spain won its first major project in Valencia in 2006. In 2007, Bellingham Marine Singapore was established and the completion of its first project, Marina at Keppel Bay, followed shortly after. In 2008, Bellingham Marine Costa Rica was established, joining the already existing Bellingham Marine Panama, to oversee projects in Central America. Early 2008, Bellingham Marine’s Central American operations won its first project in Quepos, Costa Rica. In 2009 and 2010 Bellingham continued to expand further into Asia setting up offices in China and Seoul, South Korea. Following on the heels of the company’s expansion into Korea, Bellingham Marine opened up an office and established a company in Xiamen, China in 2011. Also in 2011, the company purchased the assets of Marine Technology Management to increase its competitive edge in the timber float industry and established a division dedicated to the design and production of timber dock systems in Castle Hayne, North Carolina.

Concrete Floating Docks
UNIBOLT®
Bellingham offers two concrete floating dock systems - the Unifloat® system is a waler connected system and the Unibolt® a bolted system. Both systems have a number of advantages including: strength, ruggedness, durability, proven performance, stability, and corrosion resistance. The Unifloat® concrete dock system is composed of individual modules connected with a through-rod / waler system. The modular concept allows for virtually any size or configuration. The Unibolt® dock system is known for its strength. The Unibolt’s walkway connection system differs from other bolted systems in that the design eliminates any possibility of metal fatigue. This is accomplished through a patent pending three part design concept. Another differentiating feature of Bellingham Marine’s Unibolt system is the ability to change connection bolts without separating modules or removing walkway sections from their piles.
Timber Floats Bellingham’s timber float system is a mechanically laminated waler system that utilizes steel reinforced timber connections, designed to exceed strict loading requirements. Its core is a structurally engineered, compressed module that allows for easy shipping. The system’s structural timber truss frame is supported by flotation tubs and is typically finished with a timber deck; however, a range of other decking options are available. TIMBER FLOATS
Metal Frame Unideck® Bellingham Marine developed the Unideck® flotation system to meet the special needs of a growing recreational boating market in inland and well protected waters. Designed especially for lightweight applications, Unideck® features a metal truss frame (galvanized steel or aluminum) supported by flotation tubs.
Covered Moorage COVERED MOORAGE Bellingham’s range of products represent the industry’s most advanced dock systems and dry storage facilities available in the market.
All of Bellingham’s floating dock systems are available with a structurally designed roof system to protect boats and marina guests from the elements. These covered systems provide an open atmosphere under the roof while maintaining the structural strength for site-specific wind and snow loads, as engineered by Bellingham Marine. Bellingham Marine’s traditional covered moorage systems feature galvanized steel framework that supports the roofing structure; however, custom designs are also available. For example, the company designed a pile supported canvas roof system for a project in California.

2013 Project Excellence Award (large project category) BELLINGHAM MARINE AND H+K ENGINEERING GROUP
AWARDED BY
COPRI (ASCE Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute) The Project Excellence Award, in the Large Project category, was awarded to Bellingham Marine in partnership with H+K Engineering Group, a leading dock engineering firm, for their work on Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) Marina, Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. The project consisted of building a world class superyacht facility on a small island in the British Virgin Islands. The island’s limited infrastructure and the region’s exposure to dynamic weather events created some unique challenges for the team. The extreme nature of the Virgin Gorda site including water depths over 35 feet (9m) and extremely hard limestone combined with the loads placed on the docks by large vessels necessitated the development of a technically advanced floating dock system.

Rebuild
Fronting the Ritz Carlton and Marina del Rey’s prestigious Marina City Club, The Marina at the Marina City Club is nestled among some of the area’s most esteemed properties. In 2013, the marina started the process of renovating its facility. The first phase of the renovation included the complete reconstruction of the marina’s dock system, shoreside railings, gates and gangways. Bellingham Marine was hired as the design-build, general contractor to oversee the renovation. The company’s scope of work included permitting support; dock system design, manufacture and installation including new concrete piling, design and installation of the utility and fire system; and installation of railings, gates and gangways. “Bellingham Marine was an invaluable member of the team,” said Alicia Kunz, Marina Manager. “Having built a number of projects in the area, Bellingham Marine was confident in navigating the permitting process and was able to provide us with the best possible value for our dock system.” “We took a streamlined, phased approach to the reconstruction of the marina’s docks. This approach allowed boaters to remain in the marina throughout the reconstruction process and helped our crews move quickly through the rebuild,” said Mark Secrest, Project Manager for Bellingham Marine. The existing docks were removed one row at a time and Unifloat, concrete floating docks were installed in their place. The new docks include upgraded utilities and amenities. A new public pump out was installed at the end of E-2800 dock.
The marina’s concrete floating docks feature rounded finger ends with slips configured in single berths.
The renovation included new aluminum guard rails with a custom wave pattern along the bottom, glass security gates and a covered gangway.

This Bellingham Marine marina project in La Paz, Mexico is the center piece of a magnificent waterfront development project. Idyllically situated on 222.5 hectares (550 acres) of coastal land just north of La Paz, CostaBaja is a masterfully planned community offering a luxury resort lifestyle. The resort features 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) of beach front, a world class marina, a nautical club, hotel, spa and commercial as well as residential suites. This marina project consisted of constructing a new harbor by local contractors, which is rare by today’s standards. Once the basin was completed, BMI acted as the prime contractor providing full service design, construction and fabrication services from the top of each gangway throughout the marina facility. BMI recommended the use of steel pile to assist driving in rocky conditions as well as saving devastating transportation costs. Innovative single piece fingers were also utilized and each new slip was provided with a full set of utilities for today’s boating needs, including sewage pump-out hydrants, cable television, telephone lines and power outlets.
The upland resort at CostaBaja sits in the middle of the marina’s two basins.

Beautifully located at the very tip of Shelter Island, CA and offering access to the beach, 4.5 hectares (11 acres) of lush tropical gardens and a marina, Kona Kai Resort and Spa is a year round waterfront resort in San Diego, California, designed with a tropical island ambiance. Bellingham Marine was hired for the renovation of the resort’s marina based on their reputation in the industry and ability to meet the needs of a complex project. The renovation at Kona Kai entailed a complete overhaul of the marina. Detailed planning and coordination were an absolute requirement. The goal was to remove the existing marina, which was in disrepair and absolutely full of boats, while causing as little disruption to the tenants and day to day operations as possible. Bellingham Marine performed as a design/build contractor and provided assistance in the permit process. Work included demolition and disposal of the existing system; design, manufacture, and installation of the new concrete floating dock system; design and installation of utility systems; pile driving; and design and installation of ADA accessible gangways. Where possible the existing marina components, such as power pedestals, piling and pile caps, were salvaged and reused. Bellingham Marine was hired as the design-build contractor for the waterside portion of the Portofino rebuild project. Bellingham assisted in obtaining local conceptual approvals, as well as approvals from regulatory agencies such as the California Coastal Commission. After the permits were received, Bellingham demolished the existing marina and designed, manufactured, and constructed the new marina – including docks, gangways, security gates, piles, utilities and dock accessories such as dinghy racks and in-slip signage. A new fire suppression system, fresh water hose bibs, upgraded power, cable TV and telephone hookups were installed at each berth. The completed Portofino Yacht Club has 183 berths ranging from 7.6 meters (25 feet) to 30 meters (98 feet). Everything was well planned from the beginning. Marina tenants were notified 4 to 5 months in advance about the upcoming renovation. Open communication with tenants was made the number one priority. New homes were found for displaced boats before construction was started. The rebuild was phased to ensure as little disruption as possible to the tenants. Bellingham Marine developed a phasing schedule that enabled all boats to remain in the marina during the rebuild and required a single boat to move no more than twice over the course of the project. The Portofino Hotel & Marina is one of the few oceanfront hotels in the Los Angeles area that combines the service offering of a premier hotel with the offerings of a private marina.
The reconstruction of Portofino utilized a phased plan, which minimized disruptions and allowed all boats to remain in the marina during the rebuild.

Phased over a three year period the entire Shilshole Marina and related shoreside facilities were completely renovated. The original marina was built in 1958 and featured Bellingham Marine’s UnifloatŽ dock system. At nearly 50 years of age, the marina had exceeded its design life but was still serving its owner well. In 2005, work began to renovate the docks, utilities, buildings, pavement and other infrastructure. In 2008, the waterside portion of the project was completed marking the beginning of another 50 year cycle for the marina. Phased construction allowed the marina to remain in operation throughout construction without disruption to services. As construction efforts moved through the marina, vessels were moved to temporary locations and moved into their new berths at the end of each phase. Originally configured with 1,500 berths, the renovation project included replacement of 22 docks and piers with 1,411 berths sized for modern vessels, and an additional 1,219 linear meters (4,000 linear feet) of moorage. In total, Bellingham provided over 26,477 square meters (285,000 sq. feet) of docks for the Shilshole project.

Canada’s newest marina, Milltown Marina, sits on the outskirts of downtown Vancouver, B.C. in a well-protected basin on the North Arm of the Frasier River on Richmond Island. Following, almost four years of permitting hurdles and a year of construction, Milltown opened its doors in October 2013. The marina’s wet slips cater to vessels 9 meters (30 feet) to 24 meters (80 feet) in length with a capacity for 220 vessels. The marina also features a side tie area that can accommodate vessels up to 37 meters (120 feet). The floating concrete docks are terracotta colored with rounded finger ends. The inspiration for the dock’s color was taken from a high-end megayacht marina in the British Virgin Islands that was also built by Bellingham Marine. Full utilities are provided at all slips. In January 2013, Bellingham Marine was awarded a design/build contract for the construction of the marina. Bellingham’s scope of work included dock and electrical design, dock installation and supply of electrical equipment. Developers of the marina and upland property hope that the new facility will help provide some relief from chronic moorage shortages for Metro Vancouver boat owners as well as provide new public access to Richmond Island for residents seeking recreational activities and a chance to reconnect with the riverfront. Currently, waiting lists for moorage in Vancouver can stretch up to eight years.
Extra wide walkways were incorporated to accommodate golf cart traffic on the docks.

Cabrillo Way Marina, located in the hub of LA’s waterfront community was in the planning stages for many years before finally moving forward with construction. In 2009, General Contractor, Dutra, awarded Bellingham Marine a contract to rebuild the marina. The new marina features a 15.8 hectares (39 acre) deep water basin with 16.6 hectares (41 acres) of planned landside amenities. Extensive excavation and dredge work allowed engineers to more than double the size of the original basin and greatly expand the marina’s number of berths from 520 to 700. “The team’s ability to think outside the box and approach the rebuild from a unique angle, afforded the Port of LA the ability to increase its number of berths,” said Jill Shimamoto, Project Construction Manager for the Port. The existing marina at the site was long past its useful life and was becoming a safety hazard. Exposed electrical wiring, overhead utility lines and rotting timbers were some of most obvious concerns. Outdated slip sizes, constructed for narrow beam boats had also left a number of the marina’s berths vacant. Today, Cabrillo Way offers a much different picture. The old wooden docks have been replaced with beautiful concrete floating docks complete with the latest amenities and accessories. One of the innovative features of the new marina is the placement of sewer pumpout hydrants below the deck of the pontoon. The hydrants are accessed by a hatch in the deck. This design avoids having any equipment protrude above the walkway. Another notable feature of the marina is the use of single slip berths and dedicated power pedestals. This means each boat has a finger pier on either side as well as its own power center. The docks at the new marina were designed for the ultimate in user convenience and comfort. “We selected the Unifloat® concrete floating dock system for its solid feel and proven performance,” remarked Chris Grossi, Design Project Manager for the Port of LA. “We wanted a dock system that would last a long time and provide our tenants with the best experience.”

The Sacramento Marina South Basin project consisted of demolition of the existing 240 berths and replacement with 191 covered berths with a Unifloat® system. Work also included adding covers to two existing docks in the North basin (which BMI build in the 80’s and 90’s), construction of a new floating fuel dock and marina store, and installation of ADA compliant access points. The new covered moorage attaches the posts with two-point connections along the side of the fingers. This new design is referred to as a ‘moment connection,’ as opposed to a ‘pin-foot’ connection on the top of the dock, which attaches the post to the dock but provides no support against wind loads. The moment connection is at twopoints against the sides of the finger, and it’s very strong. When all the upright posts work together, they provide the strength needed to withstand wind loads without the traditional cross braces. This single design change saved enormous amounts of steel. Because the changes in the height of the river can reach extremes, three separate gangways were needed to provide ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) access. One is used at low water levels, another at mid levels, and a third for high water. This scheme offers access points within ADA maximum angles at all water heights.
The dock’s unique roof structure provides shelter from the elements.
The marina includes a floating fuel dock and convenience store.

Located in the beautiful, pristine waters of the Caribbean, in a natural deep water basin, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda provides an alternative to open-water mooring for large vessels requiring deep water. The facility also features the latest in dock technology and the best of amenities. Roman clay colored concrete floats, designed and manufactured by Bellingham Marine, are the cornerstone of this high end facility. LED lights cast into the float decks, underwater lighting, stainless steel bollards, dual functioning service outlets offering up to 600amp service for yachts and 30 amp service for support vessels, 6 meter (20 foot) wide walkways for vehicle access, and 900 mm (36 inch) freeboard to accommodate easy vessel access are just a few of the many features that set YCCS apart from others. The massive floats at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda feature 178 mm by 483 mm (7 inch by 19 inch) glu-lam beam structural walers and 508 mm(20 inch) diameter steel pile – all designed to handle the extreme loads placed on the system by the large vessels and wave action in the sound from hurricanes and other weather events. Pilings are fitted with HDPE sleeves to eliminate maintenance. Under normal operations YCCS accommodates 12 – 20 vessels with an LOA of 30 – 100 meters (98 – 328 feet). However, designed with a flexible mooring configuration for special events, YCCS’s 762 linear meters (2,500 linear feet) of dockage has the capacity to handle up to 50 yachts. Nothing was overlooked in the design for YCCS including the environment. The developer wrote an environmental policy plan that guided the project since its inception. Everything from the materials the marina was constructed of to the positioning of the docks was done with the intent of minimizing the impact of the facility on the surrounding environment.

Additionally, they feature a curved walkway in a true arc. In conjunction with Bellingham’s engineers ADAC Structures every pontoon and fixture was custom designed and built specifically for the conditions and operational specification in the Loano Port. Hurricanes, Florida heat waves and thunderstorms were just a few obstacles faced by Bellingham Marine’s crews during the removal and installation of two new piers at the Ocean Reef Club Marina in Key Largo, FL. Construction permits were issued for the job on July 20, 2011, all work was completed November 2nd, and the first boat moved into its slip on November 3rd. An outstanding job completed in a little over 90 days. The two new docks replaced 56 fixed concrete berths with new 30” freeboard Unifloat® docks. The Ocean Reef docks feature a telescoping pile system for 80’ finger piers - a first for marinas in the southeast region of the United States. In addition, all the docks were trimmed with AZEK® decking on top of the walers and all frames. Another interesting aspect of the job was the ownership of the slips. Each slip at Ocean Reef is privately owned. One of the many challenges faced was placement of fender piling in between the finger piers. Although the fender pile is typically included in a double loaded berth to act as a “fender” in case of a wayward captain, in the case of Ocean Reef it was most importantly placed as the property line boundary for the slip. Measurements to the ½” were required for placement of these piling.
The Club’s 80’ finger piers feature telescoping pile. These piles offer all the benefits of a pile anchored dock system without the visual obstruction.
Sewage pumpout hydrants are located below the deck in the triangle frame. This keeps them out of sight yet conveniently located for easy in-slip access.

Opua Marina, recently renamed Bay of Islands Marina was design and built in 2000 by Bellingham Marine. Fifteen years later, the marina has become an iconic symbol in the marina industry for floating breakwater design and curved pontoon construction. Designed to meet certain environmental requirements, the plan for Bay of Islands Marina necessitated the building of a curved floating breakwater using “skirted” Unifloat pontoons. The mid and northern sections of the floating breakwater feature a “yoke” pile system. The breakwater was designed to reduce a 900 mm (3 foot) wave attack to 300 mm (1 foot) inside the marina. Situated on the mouth of an estuary, it was important that the design and construction of the marina reflect an environmentally sensitive approach. It was important that seabeds were not disturbed and that the basin have good tidal flush. Use of a concrete floating dock system helped to meet the environmental requirements of the project. Bay of Islands Marina includes 240 berths 11 meters (36 feet) to 27 meters (89 feet) and 30 swing moorings.

Design/Build PROJECT TYPE
Rebuild
Bellingham Marine completed the construction of a 150 meter (492 foot) long floating wave attenuator and inner marina for the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron at Kirribilli. This superb location gives immediate access to Sydney’s world renowned Harbour but provides a challenging wave climate for boat berthing. For many years the Club had been well served by a 90 meter (295 foot) long floating “breakwall” comprising of two independent sections, secured to the seafloor by an anchoring system. When it became clear that maintenance costs against replacement cost should be considered, the Club sought an alternative mooring system that would satisfy Development Approval conditions to build a low profile structure in this highly sensitive harbour location. The Club also wanted to expand the Pond Area directly in front of the main building for berthing of vessels. This was to be achieved by adding 60 meters (197 feet) to the original length of the floating “breakwall”. Within the Pond Area, a new 60 meter (197 foot) by 3 meter (10 foot) arm was introduced adjacent to the Squadron’s hardstand area to effectively double the available berthing space. The Council agreed to the replacement and extension of the “breakwall” but required that no piles be seen above the floating surface. As the Club did not want to use an anchoring system with the new project, contractors were sought with the expertise to design and install a suitable piling system that would comply with this constraint. Bellingham Marine was selected for its innovative solution to provide a ‘telescopic’ piling system and for its track record with innovative design, for delivering economic and quality floating systems and experience with “wave attenuation” at challenging sites. The piling system involved two parts, one secured into the seabed to provide lateral stability and the second attached to the pontoon below the walking surface to transfer wave and boat loads to the support pile. The two components overlapped to accommodate tide and wave fluctuation. A feature of the final design of the attenuator was the introduction of a 100 meter (328 foot) radius curve to contain the attenuator pontoon within lease boundaries. The attenuator section incorporated a central trench over its full length. This trench provided drainage for overtopping wave conditions and facilities for services including fire fighting, power and water reticulation. This trench was covered using an open mesh fiberglass material.

In the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina, City Marina has a wave attenuator, which serves as a fuel and transient dock. Designed by Bellingham Marine, the Unifloat® wave attenuator system, called The Mega Dock by the owner, is the premier dock in town. After removing the existing steel frame wood decked dock system, Bellingham Marine installed a 6 meter (19 foot) by 457 meter (1,500 foot) combination Unifloat® high freeboard megayacht and wave attenuator float system. The Mega Dock allows flexibility for the number and size of side-tie slips. It also protects the marina’s conventional slips from wind-driven waves and boat wake at the marina’s convenient Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway location. City Marina’s attenuator system is composed of individual concrete float modules interconnected with a through-rod and waler system. Bellingham’s wave attenuators are individually designed to site specific conditions relative to wind, wave, wake and transmitted wave criteria. “We looked at a variety of different systems and found that Bellingham offered the best solution,” said Robbie Freeman, owner of City Marina. The marina offers full facilities, including showers, laundry and cable TV. Filled with the aroma of coffee and cappuccino, City Marina’s Ships’ Store is stocked with everything needed to fill the galley. Elliott Bay marina was the largest single phase marina ever built in the United States. 1,200 Unifloat® berths, built in a single phase, have become the standard by which northwest marinas are measured. With all the necessary state of the art amenities this project became a successful business well ahead of the owner’s projections. A unique feature of this marina is its protection system from wave action. Three different methodologies were used for the succinctly different design waves encountered at the site. A rubble mound breakwater protects the main exposure, a wave wall acts as protection from the secondary exposure and a 244 meter (800 foot) Unifloat® wave attenuator protects the facility from the third direction. This site specific solution insured proper protection to the slips and at the same time maximized the economic value to the owner.
The slips range in size from 32 to 63 feet. The boat types are evenly split between sailboats and powerboats, which reflects the great sailing conditions on Puget Sound.

The floating terminal, shaped in a U, features oversized concrete docks with steel wide flange beam walers specially designed for a 3 foot wave environment, heavy duty ocean guard fenders to protect the boats from direct contact with the steel walers, a floating building constructed on the docks used for storage, extra-wide clear walkways to accommodate large crowds and covered gangways with LED rope lighting for user comfort. All power, water and pumpout connection points on the docks are concealed below the surface of the deck to keep walkways and provisioning areas free and clear of obstacles and equipment. Brad Engel, Vice President for Flagship Cruises, said “We appreciated the knowledge and expertise Bellingham Marine brought to the project. We had a number of custom elements designed into the dock system and they were integrated perfectly. As issues arose we were able to work through them quickly and efficiently and the end result is a first class facility on San Diego bay.”
The Flagship terminal is located next to Broadway Pier; the docks are laid out in a double L configuration.
The gangways at the Flagship terminal include LED rope lighting, covered walkways and a rail down the middle to aid in the flow of pedestrian traffic.

Designed to accommodate multiple ferries up to 30 meters (100 feet) in length and passenger loading and off-loading, the terminal at Glen Cove offers a relatively unique design solution in ferry terminal construction. The terminal features a 4.5 meter (15 foot) wide by 115 meter (375 foot) long floating concrete dock that sits 1,524 mm (five feet) above the water and a 9.5 meter (31 foot) by 9 meter (30 foot) match-cast floating loading platform. The massive concrete floats used for the project measure over 2.7 meters (9 feet) tall and are anchored by 500 mm (20 inch) steel pile recessed into the concrete platform. An elaborate ramp and railing system as well as custom fender system, which allows the boats to pull in bow first, were also integrated into the floating structure. The fender system is composed of multiple 300 mm (12 inch) rubber fenders mounted to galvanized steel brackets attached to the side of the concrete floats. The specially designed system provides a well-protected landing for the ferries and accommodates easy loading and off-loading. Chesterfield Associates from West Hampton Beach, NY was hired as the General Contractor. Bellingham Marine was responsible for the design and construction of the floating terminal.
One of the more unique aspects of this terminal is the custom fendering system that allows ferries to pull in bow first and off load passengers directly from the front of the boat.

Situated in the heart of Auckland, is the Stanley Bay ferry terminal built for Auckland Transport. The terminal services ferries between downtown Auckland and the North Shore. The terminal’s post-tensioned floating concrete platform, which is used for loading and unloading passengers, measures 4.8 meters (16 feet) wide by 15 meters (49 feet) long. The platform is comprised of five concrete modules – the largest of which is 3.05 meters (10 feet) tall by 4.8 meters (15.7 feet) wide by 3 meters (9.8 feet) long and weighs over 22,000 kg (48,502 lbs). It features a split level deck that steps down from 1.5 meters (5 feet) to 1 meter (3.3 feet). The dual level freeboard allows the floating terminal to accommodate both larger and smaller ferries. The design of the Stanley Bay Terminal showcases some of the most extreme technologies, engineering and design options available in the world of floating platforms and dock systems. The sites is more exposed than your typical marina and the loads placed on the docks from heavy foot traffic, a complex gangway and railing systems and not to mention the large vessels are much greater than in your typical small boat harbor. Thus, the docks are beefy - built extra tough, and are designed to handle extreme conditions.
The platform’s dual freeboard allows both large and small ferries to unload passengers easily.
The largest modules are 10 feet tall (3.05 meters).

New Construction
Westrec Marinas, which manages 31st Street Marina on behalf of the City, hired Bellingham Marine to design and supply a concrete floating platform to support its new floating pool. The unique concrete platform measures 26 meters (85 feet) by 12 meters (40 feet). It’s basically a picture frame type configuration with a 2.7 meter (9 foot) wide deck that surrounds the pool. All utilities are routed internally to provide a clean deck and all treated lumber is concealed with a polymer cover. The pool, itself, is an aluminum structure that sits snug within the platform’s hole and is designed to float independently. Surrounding the concrete platform is a floating sundeck and restroom facility. The pool is chlorinated, filtered and heated, just like an in-ground pool. The floating platform was engineered with the buoyance of the pool in mind. When filled, the pool sits flush with the deck of the platform. However, in the winter, when the water is drained from the pool, the insert is free float at its natural level in the water beneath it. This was a critical element in the design. With the two structures designed to float independently, the Harbor is able to fill and drain the pool without affecting the surrounding structures.

Bellingham Marine was contracted in 1990 to design and fabricated a 1,393 square meter (15,000 square feet) floating platform for Duane Hagadone. The platform would serve as the 14th hole at Coeur d’Alene’s famous resort and golf course. The floating platform was designed to carry an additional irrigation system, contour foam, soil and landscaping. It was developed to compensate for the weight of saturated turf and vegetation growth over time. Two 4,542 liter (1,200 gallon) tanks were built into the top layer of the concrete float to provide drainage and a water collection system, so water could be pumped directly to the shore pipeline. The unique floating platform forms an elliptical shape measuring 34 meters (110 feet) by 46 meters (150 feet) with 109 interlocking concrete flotation modules stacked two high to form a finished height of 2 meters (6 feet 10 inches). Bellingham Marine worked with golf course architect, Scott Miller and general contractor Dix Corporation on the project.

Bellingham Marine’s role in the Pelton Round Butte Selective Water Withdrawal Project was to develop a buildable float design to support the structure’s floating platform submerged 6 meters (20 feet) below the surface and measuring 27 meters (90 feet) by 46 meters (150 feet). The design also called for a series of floats which were placed on the top section of the structure. Bellingham’s portion of the project involved designing, fabricating and assembling two platforms for the structure’s upper selective water withdrawal unit which housed a floating fish screen. The bottom platform built by Bellingham was comprised of 40 match cast floats and the top of 14 floats. Given the nature of the design, the project had strict specifications; an error tolerance of only +0, -9.5 mm (+0, -3/8”) was allowed. The individual float modules required a complex series of mesh, special spiral rebar and steel bearing plates for DYWIDAG reinforcement. Over 30,844 kg (68,000 pounds) of rebar were used in production of the floats for the project.

City of Crescent City TIMELINE
2014 PROJECT DELIVERY
Design/Supply PROJECT TYPE
Rebuild
Late 2012, Bellingham Marine was hired to manufacture the docks and construct the new marina at Crescent City Harbor. According to claims by designing engineers, Crescent City Marina is the country’s only “tsunami-resistant” marina. The marina has approximately 230 slips plus side-tie space and caters primarily to fishing boats from 9 meter (30 feet) to 21 meter (70 feet) in length. The 122 meter (400 foot) long H-dock, which sits closest to the entrance, features 11.8 meter by 4.8 meter (39 foot x 16 foot) modules with a 300 mm (1 foot) gap between modules. Each module is approximately 2 meters (7 feet) tall and weighs 72,575 kg (160,000 pounds). A steel transition plate bridges the gap between modules and allows for the independent movement of each module. These docks are some of the largest and strongest in the world for this type of application. Because of their size, Bellingham Marine had to cast them on-site on a synchro lift platform. The interior docks are also built extra strong and feature Bellingham’s Unibolt concrete dock system. The system’s strength is attributed to the massive concrete modules, which make up the dock system and from the stout pile design. Large 762 mm (30 inch) piles supported by 272 kg (600 pound) pile guides are strategically placed through the marina. The pilings are the last line of defense – as such they were designed with a 25% reserve. In an extreme event, the marina may lose some of the docks but the piling should survive.
The design utilized in the dock system at Crescent City is the first of it’s kind.
H-dock forms a wall at the entrance to the basin and is designed to withstand a 12 foot wall of water; the dock is the marina’s first line of defense against a tsunami.

New Construction
This turn-key, design/build project included final design specifications, fabrication and installation of a prestressed/precast concrete boat launch ramp, launch float, precast abutments, gangways, anchor systems and marina floats. The remote location and harsh environment made for a number of unique challenges. All materials had to be pre-fabricated, sized and sent by barge to the site since there were no local sources for materials. In addition, the entire system, including piling, had to be designed to allow for easy removal. Each winter the marina will be disassembled and stored upland. This is truly a unique project with a number of components designed specifically for the site at St. Paul. The floats and prestressed concrete elements are stout and built to withstand heavy commercial use and harsh environmental conditions. The float system features heavy duty float modules fabricated from galvanized I-beams and tube steel truss frames with massive glu-lam walers supported by polyethylene encased tubs designed for this specific application. A 203 mm (8 inch) diameter steel bull rail was added for boats to tie off to and steel grating was utilized for the deck to provide a non slick surface. Additional design components include 760 mm (30 inch) freeboard, so the only components of the float system actually in the water are the tubs; wide stable walkways to accommodate motorized gator carts and a gravity anchor system, which provides the flexibility needed to remove the floats each winter.
The docks at St. Paul are held in place with a gravity anchor system. The anchor system consists of a series of anchor planks embedded two feet below the harbor floor.
