ASSIGNMENT I : WORD

KATIE BELL

INTRODUCTION

Graphic designers have a keen eye for the physical form of letters. We know them intimately – their styles and personalities. Through letters we are able to persuade passersby to enter stores, join our cause, warn drivers of hazards. You are about to form a close relationship with a few letters. You will develop an intimate knowledge of their structure, discovering what it takes to make your letters. You will give the letters a personality and a life. Through this process you will develop a rich spirit of experimentation and appreciation of creative research.

APPROACH

Think of the letters of your word as pieces of clay waiting to take shape. Type, like clay, is malleable. A letter’s shape can be pulled, pushed, stretched, and cut. It can also be wrapped, disguised, stretched, compressed, mixed, distressed, decorated and inflated. You will create three original forms for your words using whichever materials or methods you like. Your letters must be made of objects, real-world stuff. You may only use the computer as a starting point to explore various letterforms by printing your letter to use as a guide to make your own with various materials.

MY WORD: HOW

I chose “how” because I am very intrigued by the ambiguity of the word. I knew if I chose a word like soft, I would be compelled to be thematic. With “how” I have more options to be creative! I went to Walmart and grabbed as many random and interesting textures as possible! I picked up some beads, balloons, glow sticks, a confetti cannon, embroidery thread, and I am planning on using my (already owned) mountain of cords to my advantage.

ASSIGNMENT II : MUSEUM OF X

KATIE BELL

INTRODUCTION

In this project you will begin by identifying an object to visually research. This could range from something found in your bag, to furniture in your home, to a plant growing in your backyard. You will create a collection of this object, containing digital and analog sketches, found images, photographs, and collages. After completing your collection of at least 200 representations of your object, you will organize your collection considering the importance of framing and classification. You will create a landing page for your collection in the form of a museum, considering audience and tone.

PART I: COLLECT

Collect 100 images of your object. Source each image. -- 10 from an online journal or publication, 10 from a social media hashtag, 10 from search engine image search, 10 from printed material (magazines/newspapers/books/etc), 10 from video stills (film, youtube, etc.), 10 memes, 10 from your life (your own photographs/ photographs from friends), 10 from children’s illustrations, 10 logos, 10 examples from art and design history.

PART II: ILLUSTRATE

Now you will add to your collection with your own illustrations. Create 10 new sketches for each group. These sketches can range from reproductions of the existing images to new renderings that fit within the group. -- Use Adobe pen tool to trace at least one image from each group (10 in total), Spend only 30 seconds on at least 10 sketches, 10 sketches using paint or ink, 10 sketches using collage, 10 sketches with broken lines, 10 sketches that are serious, 10 sketches that are playful, 10 sketches that feel warm, 10 sketches that feel cool, 10 sketches that feel bright.

PART III: ARRANGE

Ordering a collection is fundamentally an act of designation. Now that you have 200 representations of your object, you will create an order for your collection, considering how your collection is indexed, searchable, and presentable. How do we make sense of your collection? Is it through formal elements (color, line, shape, etc.)? Is it ordered through emotional states (images that make us feel a certain way)? Is it ordered through time/place? Arrange collection in a wireframe mockup of a website. Note how the user will navigate the site. 9

PRESENTATION INTRODUCTION

An important part of being a designer is having an awareness of what your contemporaries are up to. Each of you will choose a designer (or design studio) that has contributed significantly to design today. This weekend, you will research this person or group and prepare a short presentation about them. Ideally, our class will show a wide range of design practice in all forms of media.

PROCESS

Research online? Of course, but get off the computer and go to the library, too. Dig into magazines, books and videos. Find everything you can about your designer/studio and collect images of their work. They may appear in the design press (Communication Arts, Print, How, ID, Design Observer, Under Consideration, etc.).

SPECIFICATIONS

Prepare a short presentation (no longer than five minutes) about your designer that includes a brief biography and representative samples of their work.

POSTER INTRODUCTION

You have already completed research on your selected designer. Using this research, you will now create a poster that embodies the style of your designer. The poster will invite viewers to attend a fictional lecture at the Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University.

PROCESS

We will begin in small groups with designers who share similar aesthetic sensibilities. Together with your group, you will brainstorm a long list of descriptive qualities for your poster. The goal is to create a poster that embodies the aesthetic of your particular designer without copying one of their designs directly. We will then begin by arranging information on a page, using a series of grid studies. Consider the grid systems used by your particular designer. How can you replicate these systems within your own posters? How can you use other grid systems to push their style? 21

AARON JAMES DRAPLIN

Aaron James Draplin is an American designer from Michigan. He works mainly in vector illustration and graphic design. He is known for his use of bold colors and thick lines. Draplin is a world-reknowned designer who is constantly creating. I personally really enjoy his approach to design, which is why I chose him for my designer presentation and poster project.

INTRO TO GRAPHIC DESIGN

After doing a lot of experimentation with the grid systems, I found myself drawn to the shape below. This shape is reminiscent of one of Draplin’s most popular designs. He did a design for NASA that put him on the map, and made him a recognizable designer. I wanted to use that influence for the final poster, but first I had to do some color experimentation.

After I decided on a color palette and recived critique, I was nearly finished with my poster. One of my suggestions from class critique was to keep the marks and bleeds that I acidentally left on the slide deck. I thought this was a great suggestion, so I designed my own marks and bleeds to match my color palette, and finalized my design (next page).

ASSIGNMENT IV : VOTE

KATIE BELL

INTRODUCTION

Create a poster encouraging your peers to vote. Your poster must contain the words “vote” and should not contain any partisan information. Audience: App State Students Size: 11” x 17”

APPROACH

Before I began working on my Aaron Draplin poster, I had begun the next project. I was really excited about the idea of making a poster in Draplin’s style, so I got to work before we had the brief for the actual Designer Poster. Around the time I began this project, Ruth Bader Ginsburg had tragically passed away. Because of her influence on America, and myself, I wanted to make a poster in her honor. Luckily, our Mystery Project was related to voting, so I was able to refine my poster for the assignment.

INFORMATIONAL DESIGN ASSIGNMENT V: TRIBAL LANDS

44

ASSIGNMENT V : TRIBAL LANDS

KATIE BELL

INTRODUCTION

Information Design focuses on taking complex concepts and visual data and making it more visually accessible, using typography and imagery to help the viewer navigate through the confusion in order to gain an understanding of the information. Information design is the use of graphic means to organize and communicate data or knowledge. It is a graphic representation of a structure, situation, or process – the anatomy of a creature, the hierarchy of a corporation, the flow of ideas. Information design allows us to see relationships that would not come forward in a straight list of numbers or verbal description. In this project you will choose one issue, researching it thoroughly. If there is significant division on the issue, make sure that you research both sides. Watch movies, read books, go to the library, search online. Make sure your research is thorough. You will present your research to me during your designated workday. You will then create an information design in the form of a poster and a series of three Instagram posts, presenting the research found.

PART I: RESEARCH

I chose to research Tribal Lands in America. This is an important issue because it shines a light on our America’s prevalent history of imperialism and gentrification. The issue at hand has not changed much over time in principle. There has been theft of Native Land for generations. The main change is how the topic is being discussed. I believe now, more than ever, Americans understand how corrupt and inhumane this theft has been and how it has horrifically affected Native Americans and contributed to the inaccuracy of representation of Native American culture in America. For my poster I wanted to keep the imagery simple to show the viewer the full extent of the theft of Native Land. Personally, I think the maps speak for themselves and show just how much has been stolen over 2 centuries. I don’t believe this issue is that two sided, it is rather factual evidence of American imperialism. I want my tone to be serious, but inviting and minimalistic.

PART II: REFLECTION

I did not realize the full extent of stolen land in America. I found it to be pretty alarming the sheer amount of land that was taken from Native Americans over the course of American history. I think this image could be easily teachable. It is a simple concept, yet a horrific one as well.

REFERENCE

ASSIGNMENT V : TRIBAL LANDS

KATIE BELL

I really enjoyed the visual impact of the graphs on page 46, and wanted to use something similar for my design. I wanted the map to be more modern and simplistic as opposed to being hyper-realistic. I also wanted to incorporate more imagery or iconography that is referential to that of Native American tribes.

SECOND DRAFT

ASSIGNMENT V : TRIBAL LANDS

KATIE BELL

I recieved a few notes that my hierarchy was a bit difficult to understand, as well as great feedback about the use of color. The Instagram posts had little adjustments to make, but the poster needed some edits in color and visual understanding.

SECOND DRAFT

49

ART 1102 - 103

INTRO TO GRAPHIC DESIGN

I changed the weight of the font for the dates on the poster. I also switched the pink and yellow, since red hue colors typically have a more menacing tone. Because of this, it makes more sense that the “stolen land” would be in red to further emphasize the meaning in the poster. I also switched the colors on the Instagram posts.

After another critique, I had recieved conflicting feedback. Some of my peers actually prefered the bolder font over the lighter one. I switched the font for the dates back to the original, but made it slightly smaller. I also added lines and more iconography to tie everything together.

INTRODUCTION

Books are physical. They are three dimensional objects that take up space. The form they take determines their context and therefore the way in which they are read. In this project we will explore different kinds of books virtually, including zines, saddle stitch books, perfect bound books, accordion books, and spiral bound books. The content of this book will be collective. Everyone in both sections of Intro to Graphic Design will respond to a prompt related to living through the current pandemic.

APPROACH

For my “Quaranzine,” I wanted to keep the design minimal. I chose to use nonrepresentational photography and various gradients for the visual texture of my book. I also chose a serif font since I think this book looks best in print.

WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN? Graphic design can involve many different aspects of art. Design can be used to market products, inspire ideas, or even inform audiences. Design is a broad medium that can be used to accomplish many goals. Graphic designers use their art to improve and decorate ordinary life as it exists on Earth. Graphic design can be used as a marketing tool to communicate advertising as well as intrigue potential customers. Design can be used to create and improve social media advertising, as well as billboard advertisements, television advertisements, and poster advertisements. These advertisements can be used to catch the attention of a broader audience through the use of eye-catching imagery. Graphic design is also a form of art. Design is used to express the thoughts and feelings of many artists. This could be through creating movie and music posters, to illustrating children’s books, to planning out murals in adobe illustrator before they are painted on a building. This may be a newer art form, but it is not a vacant one. With the rise of the internet, innovative technology, and social media, graphic design has become a rather popular outlet for many people. Recently, there has been a surge of graphic design used as activism. No longer is graphic design exclusively filled with logos and color palettes for marketing and advertising. Obviously, this is a significant part of design, but it has become so much more. Design is now, more than ever in my opinion, being used to educate and inform people about pressing issues in our world. Design has created an appealing way to create a sense of activism in those who do not realize the power they have to change our communities across the globe.
