Whitten Soccer Complex

BelmontBruins.com

Nestled amidst the shadows of Nashville’s magestic skyline, The Whitten Soccer Complex is one of the finest playing surfaces in the Middle Tennessee area. After serving as the primary international media compound for the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate between Barack Obama and John McCain at Belmont University’s adjacent Curb Event Center, Whitten Soccer Complex returned to its splendor as the Bruins’ home field last season. Complete with an in-ground sprinkler system and lights, this facility is home to both soccer programs and various intramural activities. The Bermuda grass field sees extensive action while adding much needed “green space” to the campus. Besides the use for varsity soccer and intramural sports, the field is encircled by a lighted walking track intended for use by the entire Belmont community. Bleacher seating for up to 700 spectators is located on the east side of the complex. The men’s soccer team scored a couple of their most impressive victories at home, knocking off the University of Kentucky 2-1 in overtime during the Whitten Soccer Complex’s inaugural season (1998), and in 2001 shutting out Conference USA member TCU, 1-0, to open their home campaign. 2010 will likely be Whitten’s last stand, as the Bruins transition from the venerable field into their new home facility at Rose Park.

International Soccer Plays Here

While not readily confused with Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona or Amsterdam as a soccer mecca, Nashville is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the top American cities to host premier events. LP Field, home of the NFL Tennessee Titans, has played host to several marquee international matches. The Music City shined in its debut on April 20, 2004, when the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer played Tecos UAG of the Mexican Primera Division. Later that year, the United States Women’s National Team hosted a friendly against Canada. In 2006, the United States Men’s National Team faced Morocco. In 2008, the Americans hosted the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying at LP Field, with Canada, Guatemala and Honduras taking part. In April of 2009, the United States Men’s National Team defeated Trinidad & Tobago in a World Cup Qualifying Match in Nashville behind three goals from Jozy Altidore. With knowledgeable fans and a top-of-the-line facility, Nashville has cemented its place as a mainstay on the international host site rota.

Earle

Davidson Head Coach z 14th season z Vanderbilt ‘89 Earle Davidson has been at the helm of the Belmont men’s soccer program for the past 13 seasons, making him the Bruins’ only coach during the NCAA era. Committed to excellence on and off the field, this fall Davidson enters his 14th season as the head coach at Belmont. After the most successful campaign of the NCAA and Atlantic Sun era in 2008, Davidson’s Bruins battled many challenges and plenty of adversity last season before finishing with a record of 3-13-1. The 2003 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year helped lead Brandon Tarr to multiple individual awards in 2009. Under Davidson, the Knoxville, Tenn. native earned ASun All-Freshman Team and All-Conference Second Team accolades. Tarr also became the first student-athlete in the program’s history to be named A-Sun Freshman of the Year. Davidson’s tenure has also been marked by unrivaled academic achievement. Including Brett Parker’s Academic All-District nod in 2008, the Bruins have earned seven such honors since 2001. Marcos Cabrera also added Academic All-America honors in 2001 and 2002 under Davidson. Belmont men’s soccer annually stands atop the Atlantic Sun in Academic All-Conference honorees. Each of the past five years, the Bruins have been recognized by the NCAA in its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) Report - which identifies elite program’s in academic eligibility and retention. In 2008 the Bruins went 11-8-2, reaching the Atlantic Sun Conference Semifinals despite no true home matches, as venerable Whitten Field hosted the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate. The team reached the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the sixth straight season, as Dan Meacock and Will Moorad were named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. 2007 saw the Bruins earn a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. The Bruins notched a signature win at nationally-ranked Furman to end the regular season. Three of Davidson’s players earned All-Atlantic Sun honors (Jay Ayres, Ian Schinelli and T.J. Brown). Ayres was named the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season before embarking on a successful run with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer. Davidson led the Bruins to a 7-9-2 record in the 2006 season, highlighted by four nonconference home wins and three players earning All-Atlantic Sun honors (Jay Ayres, Ian Schinelli, and Eric Susewind). In 2005, the squad saw junior J.P. Rodrigues named Defensive Player of the Year in addition to his placement on the all-conference first team. Sophomore Eric Susewind earned second team honors. The Bruins had a breakout season in 2003 under Davidson's direction. The team improved their win total by four matches, equaling the school record for wins with nine. Belmont also qualified for postseason play for the first time since 1995. Behind the prolific goal scoring of two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection Fernando Castellanos, the Bruins went 9-7-1 and finished tied for second in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Belmont drew Stetson in the first round of the A-Sun Championship, but an early injury to Castellanos forced a juggling of the lineup before the team finally fell on penalty kicks. Davidson's commitment to tightening up the defensive end helped spark the team's rejuvenation. Goalkeeper Matt Renfrow, along with Carey Alexander and freshmen starters Chris Anderson and J.P. Rodrigues, led the team to a school record six shutouts while the team posted its first sub-2.00 GAA since the 1995 campaign. "Our patience has paid off and Earle has the program on the verge of becoming a yearly contender in the Atlantic Sun," stated Director of Athletics Mike Strickland. "The route has not been easy for the men's soccer program, but Earle's enthusiasm and professionalism has been ingrained within the team. Great things are happening and we are excited about 2010." Obviously, much of the success from the last few years can be attributed to the recent recruiting efforts. Castellanos finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in Belmont history and became the first Belmont player to earn All-Atlantic Sun honors. Channing Twyner earned a spot on the 2002 ASun All-Freshman team. In 2004, two Bruins were named to the All-Freshman team, a first for Belmont -- Jay Ayres and Robert Fernandez. J.P. Rodrigues, Eric Susewind, Ian Schinelli, Dan Meacock and Will Moorad continued the tradition of individual achievement. Most recently, Brandon Tarr became the first Belmont player to be named A-Sun Freshman of the year in 2009. During Davidson's tenure, the Bruins have faced some of the very best teams in the nation, but they had never encountered the level of competition seen during the 2000 season. Belmont was accepted as an affiliate member of the Missouri Valley Conference just as the Valley was hitting its competitive stride. The Bruins faced three top-25 teams that season, and nearly half of the conference's 12 teams were ranked at some point while a pair of teams reached the NCAA Final Four. Davidson’s career at Belmont began in 1995 when he joined Ronnie Littlejohn's staff. Following the 1996 season, the head coaching job came open and Davidson became the third head coach in school history. In Davidson’s first season as Belmont's head coach, he led the team to a 511 record that was highlighted by a 2-1 victory over the Memphis Tigers who were at the time ranked in the Top-25 in the nation.

Davidson has seen over a dozen former players begin professional soccer careers, with several of them playing for the local ALeague team, the Nashville Metros/Tennessee Rhythm. Chris Van Atta has played for an indoor soccer team in Kansas City, while former assistant coach Ben Fisher has played for the Cincinnati Riverhawks. J.P. Rodrigues was drafted #1 overall by the USL Miami FC franchise in 2006 and recently re-signed with the club in April. Jay Ayres has competed with both the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS and the Charleston Battery of the USL. Born in New York City and growing up in New Jersey, Davidson played his high school soccer at Mendham High School. He graduated in 1985 and decided to come to Nashville and play collegiately at Vanderbilt University. His career at Vanderbilt culminated during his senior season when Davidson received the 1989 McDonald's Award for Outstanding Performance. Following his collegiate playing days, Coach Davidson moved west to Salt Lake City, Utah and joined the Salt Lake Sting of the now defunct American Professional Soccer League (APSL). After playing one season out there, he returned to Nashville to begin a five-year career with the Nashville Metros, at the time a member of the United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL). Following the end of his professional career, Davidson decided to continue his passion for the game by joining the coaching ranks. His first opportunity at collegiate level coaching came immediately following his playing days at Vanderbilt when he became the women's team assistant. He served double-duty during the 1990 season, as he also assisted the VU men's team. Davidson also became the Director of Coaching for the Music City Sting Club Teams. In addition to these coaching duties, he has the honor of assisting with Tennessee's Olympic Development Program Teams. Davidson married former Belmont women's soccer assistant coach Alexis Hyrup in May of 2003. The couple welcomed Griffin Hyrup Davidson into the world on April 10, 2009. The family resides in Nashville.

Academic Success The Belmont men’s soccer program has excelled off the field in recent history. They are one of only 10 schools in America to be honored by the NCAA on the annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition List all five years of its existence. The honor recognizes each program ranking in the top 10 percent within their respective sport nationwide for their academic progress rate as determined by the NCAA. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic standing each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. Additionally, the Bruins have a remarkable 68 Atlantic Sun All-Academic honorees over the past five years. Men's soccer players Chris Anderson, Cyrus Eaton, Brett Parker, and Channing Twyner have added Academic All-District accolades to the list of academic honors. One of the Bruins' most accomplished players - two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year and 2008 graduate Jay Ayres - was named a finalist for a coveted NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship before moving on to a career in professional soccer.

As a player, Bryan was the first scholarship men’s soccer player at Belmont after being named All-State during his senior year at Franklin High School. He was the team captain for the Bruins and was named All-Conference twice. Johnson completed his education at Maryville College in 1996 with a degree in history and was a member of the Scots first NCAA Tournament team in 1995. He was also an assistant coach at Belmont immediately following graduation, from 1996 to 1997. Prior to returning to Belmont, Johnson served as the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. While at Cumberland from 2001 to 2004, Johnson was named TranSouth Conference Men’s Co-Coach of the Year in 2002 and helped lead the Bulldogs to their first ever Top-25 ranking in the school’s soccer history. After leaving Cumberland in 2004, he began working in the private business sector in Nashville. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Johnson has also been a successful coach at the youth level. He has helped to lead four different teams to a total of eight Division 1 State Championships. Johnson’s teams have also made appearances at the Region III Tournament, including two Regional Semifinals. He has an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coach Association of America (NSCAA). “BJ plays an important role in the program,” said Earle Davidson. “He’s a problem solver and a critical thinker, which is great to have in any competitive situation. He’s got a lot of experience, even as a head coach at the collegiate level, which is very valuable to us.”

Eric

Susewind Assistant Coach z Third season z Belmont ‘07 Eric Susewind returns for his third season as an assistant coach for men’s soccer this fall. Susewind enjoyed a decorated playing career at Belmont. A four-year starter and two-year team captain for the Bruins, Susewind earned Second Team AllAtlantic Sun honors in 2005 and 2006. Versatile and skilled, Susewind established himself as one of the top players in the conference at both forward and midfield. He ranks among the program’s career leaders in minutes played, matches played and assists. Susewind earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Belmont in 2007. A native of Houston, Texas, Susewind has coached club soccer in the Nashville area for the past three years, currently directing Tennessee United Soccer Club. Susewind also holds a USSF National D license and NSCAA Goalkeeper Regional and State license. “Suse was a tremendous player and captain for us,” Earle Davidson said. “ He’s got a great mind for the game and we’re so glad to have him on the coaching side of things now. He brings a ton of experience from the Division I level.”

2010 Season Preview

BelmontBruins.com

Overview The Belmont University men’s soccer team has advanced to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament during six of the past seven seasons. The Bruins are ready to return to the playoffs in 2010 after failing to reach post-season competition last year. With a multitude of veterans returning this season, and plenty of young talent, including 2009 A-Sun Freshman of the Year Brandon Tarr, Belmont is prepared to return to its winning ways this fall. Additionally, the 2010 season will be the final go around at venerable Whitten Soccer Complex as next season the Bruins will play their home contests at E.S. Rose Park. "We feel very good about the upcoming season," said head coach Earle Davidson. "We had a very productive spring, and made a few changes that have given us confidence moving forward. The returners have come back improved and ready to focus on the task at hand. Our recruiting class has strengthened many of our needs, and they will mix in quickly to improve the overall quality of the group. We've improved on last year's young squad," concluded Davidson. "They're all a year older, and hopefully a year wiser, so we expect that to pay dividends for the 2010 season." Year In Review After recording the most distinguished season in program history in 2008, the Belmont men’s soccer team was faced with many challenges in 2009. The season opened with a pair of losses to Marshall and Oral Roberts, as the Bruins hosted the Mafiaoza’s Invitational at the Whitten Soccer Complex. Freshmen Brandon Tarr and Bradley Shuck earned All-Tournament accolades for their performances over the first weekend of play. Belmont went 1-1-1 over its next three matches to get back into a bit of a rhythm. The Bruins came from behind to tie Air Force 1-1 in two overtimes, before falling to Denver on the road. The team’s first victory of the season came via a 4-3 overtime win over Alabama A&M, as Tarr scored twice. Three non-conference and four ASun contests later, the Bruins found themselves in a seven game losing streak. The Bruins proved to have plenty of fight left in them, as they then rebounded with back to back victories over conference foes, Jacksonville and North Florida. The Dolphins, who won the conference championship the previous year, took Belmont to overtime before sophomore Will Moorad recorded the game-winner off of an assist from Tarr. Tarr continued his outstanding freshman campaign, tallying two more goals during Belmont’s 4-1 home win over the Ospreys of North Florida. The Knoxville, Tenn. native earned Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week accolades after leading Belmont with three goals and one assist in the two wins. Three losses to finish out the season left the Bruins with a record of 3-13-1 and out of the A-Sun Playoffs for the first time since 2002. The post season wasn’t all negative, as Tarr became the first player in program history to be named Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year. Forwards

The Bruins return its top scorer from each of the past two seasons. Freshman Brandon Tarr led Belmont in scoring last season, while junior Dan Meacock was the top scorer on the team two years ago. Last season, Tarr became the first Bruin to be named Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year after scoring a team high eight goals and recording two assists for 18 total points. Tarr’s speed and play-making ability make him one of the top returning forwards in the A-Sun. The coaches in the conference recognized his talent in placing him on the pre-season All-Conference Team this summer. Meacock led Belmont in scoring during his freshman campaign in 2008. His 10 goals accounted for the second best goal scoring season in Bruins history, and earned him A-Sun All Freshman Team Honors. Dangerous inside and outside the box, in the air and with the ball at his feet, Meacock will attempt to get Belmont back to the A-Sun Tournament and beyond in 2010. Senior Brett Parker brings a physical presence to the attack, and

should get plenty of opportunities to help out the midfield as well. Strong on the ball and able to relieve pressure from the back end, Parker will be a leader for Belmont in 2010. The Fairmont, W. Va. native has six goals and four assists in his career and will be a vital piece of the puzzle again this season. Junior Will Moorad, who tallied 19 points as a freshman, came back with a strong sophomore season in 2009. He recorded 13 points on five goals and three assists last season as Belmont’s second leading scorer. Moorad should help lead the Bruin offense again in 2010. A pair of underclassmen will add depth to the Belmont forward rotation this fall. Sophomore Ian Anthony did not see action as a freshman, but brings a great combination of size and strength to the Bruins’ front line. Freshman Cody Stratton, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, should also vie for playing time in 2010. Midfielders Despite losing veterans Wade Wonderlin and Justin Hay to graduation, Belmont returns a couple of proven contributors to the midfield that should help the Bruins compete with all competition this season. Junior Edgardo Padilla has been a mainstay in the team’s midfield, only missing two matches during his first two seasons. The Lone Star State native is tough, fearless and great at connecting play. Padilla has recorded five assists in two years, and should continue to increase that total in 2010. Junior Austin Embry makes the move to midfield after spending his first two seasons as a mainstay in the back. Embry has a tremendous ability to win balls in the air, and has proven to be an obstacle for all opposing players. His desire to compete should allow him to make the transition to midfield with ease. Sophomore Sam Miller has put in the work to improve himself over the off season. The effort has paid off as Miller should make a huge impact in the Bruins’ midfield situation as a sophomore in 2010. Senior Kern Ducote and junior Tomi Homonnay, as well as a pair of sophomores, Phillip Dormont and Alex Tummons, will add depth to the Belmont midfield in 2010. Tummons is the only one of the group who has seen action for the Bruins, appearing in seven matches off the bench last season. Dormont, a standout at Dripping Springs High School in Texas, transfers to Belmont from High Point University. Freshmen Diego Figueroa and Nico Olsak will also challenge for playing time in the midfield. Figueroa hails from Pensacola, Fla. where he recorded 80 goals and 60 assists in three years at Pensacola Catholic.

10

2010 Season Preview

The crafty midfielder transferred to The Darlington School in Georgia for his senior season, where he played a season under coach Chad Little. Olsak also had an illustrious high school career, scoring 29 goals and adding 57 assists at West Boca High in Florida. Defenders Riddled with both experienced veterans and talented up and comers, the Belmont defense should be a force in 2010. Two year letterwinner senior T.J. Brown returns to the back line this fall after missing all of 2009 with an injury. A tough, physical defender, Brown gives the Bruins an all-conference level performer in the back. Junior Alex Davis and sophomore Bradley Shuck, should give the Belmont squad the experienced defense it will need to vie for a top spot in the conference. Davis and Shuck both came into their own as defenders in 2009, playing in 15 and 16 games, respectively. Davis tallied one assist to add to his defensive presence, while Shuck earned AllTournament Team accolades at both the Mafiaoza’s Invitational and the Hyatt Select Invitational during his freshman campaign. Junior Emerick Witkowski will add experience and depth to the Belmont back line this fall. The Port St. Lucie, Fla. native started five times in 14 games last season. A pair of freshman will also challenge for playing time in the back this fall. Charlie Dankert, of Carmel, Ind., was a second team AllState honoree at Carmel High. Also hailing from Indiana, Alex Jenison scored 15 goals and added 10 assists during his senior year at Central High School in Evansville, Ind. Goalkeepers Coach Davidson brings back a pair of goalkeepers who gained plenty of experience last season in senior Wesley Wray and sophomore Lou Manning. After appearing in nine contests last season, Wray is currently second in Belmont annals for career goals against average with a mark of 1.67. Manning led the Bruins in GAA as a freshman in 2009 with a mark of 1.90 in nine games. Between the active and athletic abilities of Wray and the strength and size of Manning, the Bruins look to be in good shape guarding the net in 2010. The two returning keepers recorded 54 out of Belmont’s 81 saves last season. Adding to the mix of the goalkeeper position battle are two incoming keepers, Juho Illi and Luke Roman. Illi comes to Nashville via Fairleigh Dickinson, where he played two seasons in the Northeast Conference. The Villahde, Finland native appeared in nine matches in two seasons at FDU, recording 33 saves and a record of 3-4-0. Freshman Luke Roman, of Christ Presbyterian Academy of Nashville, will also vie for minutes between the posts this fall. Schedule

The Belmont men's soccer team aims for a return to the Atlantic Sun Tournament and beyond with the help of its 2010 schedule. Head Coach Earle Davidson has lined up a challenging slate designed to help take the team to the next level. "We have an exciting schedule set for the 2010 season. It is a schedule that will help us to prepare for the conference season," Davidson said. "In addition to teams from the South Region, we are playing teams from the Midwest as well as the East Region. By competing with teams from different regions, we get a look at various styles of play that will help the guys prepare for anything we could see in conference play." Belmont opens the season with an exhibition on the road at Bellarmine on August 20 before its home opener on August 25 at Whitten Soccer Complex against first-time opponent Montevallo for an exhibition match. The first week of September finds the Bruins on the road with stops at Memphis (September 1) and Missouri Valley Conference newcomer SIU-Edwardsville (September 4). Centenary and former Atlantic Sun foe Gardner-Webb visit Nashville to compete in the Belmont Invitational the weekend of September 10.

BelmontBruins.com

BU hits the road for a match at MVC Tournament runner-up Evansville on September 15 before traveling down the boulevard to compete in a tournament hosted by Lipscomb. Alabama-Birmingham and UNC-Asheville are also slated to participate. The Bruins close out the month with a stop at first-time opponent Duquesne of the Atlantic 10 on September 25. "Quality programs such as University of Alabama Birmingham, University of Memphis and University of Evansville are on our non-conference road schedule. This caliber of team is important for us to match up against away from home as we prepare for the conference season," said Davidson. The Bruins open Atlantic Sun play on October 1 hosting the 2009 tournament champion Stetson before welcoming Florida Gulf Coast two days later. BU travels to Florida for games at North Florida (October 8) and Jacksonville (October 10) before returning to Whitten Soccer Complex to open a three-game homestand. The always competitive Battle of the Boulevard match with rival Lipscomb is slated for October 14 and the Bruins have nearly a week off before taking on in-state rival ETSU on October 22. Belmont will host USC Upstate for its regular season home finale two days later. The following weekend, the team hits the road for a stop at Campbell, who earned the number one seed in last year's A-Sun Tournament, on October 28. The Bruins will then face off against Mercer, the tournament's runner-up, on October 30. Belmont concludes the regular season on the road at first-time opponent Houston Baptist on November 2 before the 2010 Atlantic Sun Tournament begins four days later at campus sites of the higher seeds.

Belmont University

BelmontBruins.com ACADEMICS AND MORE Belmont's boundaries continue to extend beyond the Nashville campus through its Cool Springs campus south of Nashville and organized programs such as the Washington Center program and music business' Belmont West in Los Angeles and Belmont East in New York City. Study-abroad programs place students in China, Costa Rica, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, South Africa and Spain. Belmont also serves as a regional center of the East-West Center for the Development of Asian Studies. Vital to the Belmont student experience are service learning, volunteerism and mission projects that invest in surrounding communities. Through the efforts of students and faculty, Belmont has touched lives in Nashville's charitable organizations, its growing Hispanic community, area tutoring programs, neighboring businesses and mentoring programs, as well as inner-city and overseas mission projects, including trips to the Appalachian Mountains and the Ukraine.

HISTORY AND HONORS In the mid-1800s, the campus was known as Adelicia Acklen's Belle Monte estate. The antebellum mansion remains today, flanked by university buildings separated in age by a century. The first educational institution on the estate was the original Belmont College (1890-1913), offering elementary school through junior college education to young ladies. The school merged with Ward Seminary to become the prestigious WardBelmont School for Women (1913-1951) and in 1951 became the coed Belmont College. In 1991, the college became Belmont University and, this year, began the 115th year of higher education on this site. Belmont continually reflects its rich heritage as it excels in the academic area. Last year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Belmont University as number seven on its list of best colleges and universities in the South in the magazine's "master's" category. VISION Belmont's vision is to be a premier teaching university bringing together the best of liberal arts and professional education in a Christian community of learning and service. Belmont strives to enable men and women from diverse backgrounds to engage and transform the world with disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage and faith. Believing that every student is created for a purpose in life, Belmont encourages students to explore their passions and develop their talents to meet the world's needs.

Among its student body of just over 5,000, are students from every state and more than 29 countries. In addition to seven baccalaureate degrees in over 75 areas of study, Belmont offers master's degrees in Business Administration, Accountancy, English, Education (including Sport Administration), Music, Nursing and Occupational Therapy, and doctorates in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. Under the leadership of President Robert Fisher, Belmont celebrates more than a century of academic heritage. Perhaps most notably, Belmont stood out in the latest annual ranking of America’s best colleges and universities in U.S. News & World Report, honored as one of top two schools nationwide for “leading the pack in improvements and innovative changes." BU is now ranked seventh in the South in the “Best Universities – Masters” category. Also noteworthy, Belmont has earned the Atlantic Sun Academic Champion Trophy seven of the last nine years - with over two-thirds of its student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in 2007-08. Moreover, Belmont has opened several impressive new facilities on campus which have enhanced the learning environment: the Massey Performing Arts Center, the Curb Event Center, and the newly-unveiled Gordon E. Inman Center. Then came word Belmont would host the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate, further exposing the school to a global audience. In short, Belmont has experienced remarkable growth and achievement increases in average ACT scores, innovative program development, impressive campus expansion, land and facility development and establishing itself as a national leader in quality improvement.

Dr. Robert

Fisher

University President z 11th year Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves as President of Belmont University, a position he has held since April 2000. During his tenure the university’s enrollment has risen by nearly 70 percent while the campus itself has expanded significantly with the additions of the Curb Event Center and Beaman Student Life Center, the Gordon E. Inman Center, the Troutt Theater complex and several new residence halls and parking garages. In addition, he worked to secure Belmont as the host site for the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, a historic event broadcast worldwide that also led to Fisher’s selection as 2008 Tennessean of the Year. But Dr. Fisher’s greatest sense of accomplishment comes not from new campus structures, stronger endowments or a larger student body. Rather, he measures achievement through witnessing education’s impact on each individual student. “The student is the focus of all our efforts here at Belmont,” Fisher said, “and our top priority is meeting the needs of those students. My life's mission is to help create experiences that transform people, especially students, in ways that enable them to become all they were created to be.” Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Fisher was vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas State University for four years and was dean of the School of Business at Henderson State University, his alma mater, for 10 years. Fisher earned a B.S.B.A. from Henderson State, an M.B.A. from the University of Memphis and a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. In addition to his success as both faculty member and higher education administrator, Fisher is also an accomplished author with his most recent work, Life Is a Gift: Inspiration from the Soon Departed, released in 2008. Co-authored with his wife Judy, Life Is a Gift features a collection of lessons learned from interviews with 104 terminally ill patients of Alive Hospice in Nashville. Dr. Fisher previously co-authored Real Dream Teams: Seven Practices Used by WorldClass Team Leaders to Achieve Extraordinary Results, published by St. Lucie Press, with Belmont’s Vice President of University Advancement Dr. Bo Thomas. Expressing knowledge gained from his business degrees and management positions, Dr. Fisher has published numerous articles on management and leadership and has consulted with a wide variety of organizations on human resource and strategic planning issues, including Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Alltel, Arkla Gas and the U.S. Department of Transportation, among others. In 1992, Fisher served in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a Fulbright Scholar, conducting research and consulting with the National Institute of Public Administration. He also provided a keynote address at the Arabian Society for Human Resource Management Conference in Bahrain in 1998. Active in his community, Fisher has served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, the Country Music Foundation, the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Symphony, the PENCIL Foundation, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Alliance for Public Education, TICUA, Cumberland Region Tomorrow, Fifth Third Bank and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Nashville, participates in Nashville’s Agenda, and is a 2001 graduate of Leadership Nashville. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Arkansas Enterprise Group, a division of Southern Development Bank. Married for 39 years, Dr. Fisher and his wife Judy share in their commitment to Belmont University, where Mrs. Fisher provides support through her role as campus-wide coordinator of interior construction and exterior landscaping/lighting. The Fishers are the proud parents of three grown children and have two wonderful sons-in-law and four perfect grandsons.

Mike

Strickland Director of Athletics z 15th year Now entering his 15th year as Director of Athletics, Mike Strickland has led Belmont's Department of Athletics through its infancy stages as a new NCAA Division I program to become one that sees annual success on the field and in the classroom. During his tenure at Belmont, the program has expanded the number of teams it fields, joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, enhanced its facilities, and established a reputation producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. Since arriving in Nashville in 1996, Strickland has overseen the inception of six new sports at Belmont: women's soccer, women's golf and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, the University has built the Frances Bond Davis Tennis Courts and the Whitten Soccer Complex, as well as the most recent partnership with Metro Parks for athletic fields at Rose Park. This exciting new venture will house Belmont baseball, softball, soccer, and track & field. Two of the most important achievements of his tenure at Belmont are the acceptance of Belmont into the Atlantic Sun Conference and the opening of the Curb Event Center. During his tenure, Strickland has overseen a program expansion from 11 to 17 teams of competition, spearheaded membership into the Atlantic Sun Conference, spurred athletic facility enhancement and forged a reputation of producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. In 2008, Belmont became the first school in Atlantic Sun Conference history to represent the league in three consecutive NCAA Men's Basketball Championships. Belmont Athletics has won a staggering 28 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships since becoming a member institution in 2001-02 - far and away the league standard. In addition, the school has hosted nine conference championships over the past six years, most recently the 2006 A-Sun Volleyball Championship. Strickland has taken a leadership role in the A-Sun serving as chairman of the tournament committee and presently serves as a member of the conference's membership committee. In addition to the program's success on the field, his tenure has seen the building of the exquisite Curb Event Center. The $52 million facility, which opened in the fall of 2003, has become the centerpiece of the athletics program. The complex houses a new 5,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball, locker rooms for all sports, a training facility and weight room, as well as administrative offices for the Athletic Department. Off the field, the athletic department has made academic achievement the cornerstone of its definition of success. Belmont has won the Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy seven of the past eight years. The Bruins boasted over two-thirds of their student athletes with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale during the past academic year. Belmont is the only school to win the trophy five straight times (2002-2006). Also of significance, Belmont has earned distinction from the NCAA in each of their Academic Progress Rate (APR) reports. Strickland brings varied years of experience to the program, including nine years as athletics director at Murray State University prior to coming to Belmont. While at Murray State, Strickland served on numerous Ohio Valley Conference committees as well as serving on the NCAA I-AA football advisory committee and the NCAA rifle committee. Prior to serving at Murray State, Strickland was an Associate Athletics Director at Wichita State University from 198387, where he was responsible for all business operations for the department. Strickland earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Georgia Southern University and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Georgia. In June of 2009, Strickland received the Under Armour National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division I Southeast Region A.D. of the Year Award. Strickland was honored at the annual NACDA convention in Orlando, Fla. Strickland is married to the former Martha Thomas, an English instructor at Nashville State Community College. The couple has two children: Leanna Elizabeth, an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee, and Sara Grace, a Belmont University graduate who is married to Jared Vaughn. In 2008, Mike and Martha celebrated two milestone events: their 35th wedding anniversary and the arrival of their first grandson, Jacob. In his leisure time, Mike enjoys travel, history, and spending time with his family.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and the entertainment, cultural, and commercial center of the Mid-South. With a metropolitan population more than 1.5 million, Nashville is one of the fastest growing markets in the country. In the past decade alone, the population of the Nashville area has grown by nearly 30 percent. ‘The Music City’ can best be described as a pleasant mix of big city entertainment and "down home" friendliness. Nashville is located in the heart of our nation’s bustling core. Major cities such as St. Louis, Cincinnati, Memphis, Atlanta, and Birmingham can all be reached by car within 3-5 hours. And when going from work to play, Nashville has it all. The city offers a multitude of sporting events, recreational opportunities, restaurants, parks, and shopping malls. The sports landscape in Nashville has changed dramatically over the past decade with the introduction of major professional sports into the area. The arrival of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans in 1998 brought instant credibility and excitement to the Mid-State. The Titans have won two division titles and one conference championship under longtime Head Coach Jeff Fisher. Tennessee represented the AFC in Super Bowl XXXIV, playing the St. Louis Rams in one of the most memorable games in NFL history. With star in the making running back Chris Johnson and on the heels of the AFC’s best mark in 2008, the future looks bright for the powder blue and white. Home for the Titans is LP Field, a 68,000 seat, state-of-the-art facility located on the east bank of the Cumberland River across from downtown. Aside from the NFL, LP Field also plays host to several major concerts and international sporting events. Not to be outdone, the Nashville Predators have introduced the thrills of the National Hockey League to Middle Tennessee. In 2008, the Predators advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a fourth consecutive season. The Preds skate in one of Nashville’s downtown landmarks, the Bridgestone Arena. The 18,000 seat Bridgestone Arena is a regular venue for touring groups. Another constant among Nashville professional sports over the past two decades has been the Nashville Sounds. The Sounds, who have called Music City home since 1978, compete in the Pacific Coast League as the Class AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. In recent years, players like Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Yovani Gallardo, and Ricky Weeks have called Nashville home. The 2006 PCL Champion Sounds play at Greer Stadium, located just minutes from downtown and the longtime home of Belmont Baseball. The Nashville Superspeedway has become the area's top racing venue, hosting NASCAR and IRL events for the past seven summers. Furthermore, Nashville has established itself as the ideal place

to host a major sporting event. In the past decade alone, the city has hosted events such as the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournament, the SEC men's and women's basketball tournaments, numerous AAU national championships, and the U.S. Swimming Championships. Recently, Nashville was awarded the 2014 NCAA Women’s Final Four. Each year, Nashville hosts the highly-popular Country Music Marathon and the Music City Bowl - which now pits teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conferences each December at LP Field. Recreation is second-to-none in Nashville. Located in the picturesque hills of Middle Tennessee, Nashville boasts thousands of acres of public parks and offers a variety of outdoor activities like golf, boating, fishing, and hiking. Known as "Music City USA", Nashville is a city whose musical tastes range from country to rock to gospel. The city has several major concert venues and many big-name concert tours consider Nashville a “must-stop.” The city also serves as home to the Grand Ole Opry, the nation's longest running weekly radio show, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Nashville has long been the mecca of the country music industry and is one of the top recording centers in the world. All of the music industry's major recording labels have a presence in Music Row, just north of the Belmont campus. The nightlife in downtown Nashville offers something for everyone. Amidst the savory sights and sounds of historic Second Avenue sit some of the most venerable hot spots anywhere. From Wildhorse Saloon and Hard Rock Cafe to Famous Dave’s BBQ and The Pancake Pantry, it is not uncommon to bump into stars of stage and screen in Nashville. Nashville's cultural environment earned the city its other nickname, the "Athens of the South." Nashville is well known as a major education center. The area's 10 accredited four-year and postgraduate institutions, including Belmont, are an integral part of the economic and cultural identity of the area. In addition to its educational institutions, the city offers numerous cultural and artistic venues. It is home to nine performing arts facilities, including the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. TPAC is the home to a wide range of events, including Broadway musicals and performances by the Nashville Ballet, Nashville Opera, and the Nashville Symphony. The city is also home to seven art galleries, including the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The Frist Center, housed in the city's old main post office, presents a wide assortment of visual arts exhibitions. Nashville boasts 25 museums (including the Tennessee State Museum), numerous historic sites (like The Hermitage - home of President Andrew Jackson, an exact replica of the Parthenon, and the Natchez Trace Parkway), and an upgraded public library system that includes a new $50 million downtown library. Lastly, Nashville is the cornerstone of the Mid-South economy. It has become a leader in printing and publishing, music and entertainment, finance and insurance, healthcare management, automobile and other related industry, manufacturing and tourism. Internationally known companies like Bridgestone/Firestone, Caterpillar Financial, Dell, Dollar General, HCA, Nissan, and Saturn have significant operations in the city. Sporting a mild climate with distinct changes in season - warm summers, colorful autumns, brisk winters, and beautiful springs - no two days are alike in Nashville.

All 11 ASun schools produced a coach who had a year of a perfect score of 1000 and the league produced a total of 25 seasons with scores of 1000. Seven of the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball recorded at least one score of 1000 and five teams had a score of 1000 in 2008-09, the most recent year recorded by the NCAA. WINNERS Four A-Sun teams received Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association AllSports Trophies in recognition of their performances in NCAA postseason play. Lipscomb’s softball team, ETSU’s men’s tennis squad plus UNF’s men’s golf team and women’s tennis carried the conference to the third-highest total by any one conference. Golf continued to boom in the conference as three league members on the women’s side advanced to NCAA play for the first time in conference play. Women’s golf became the first sport in the conference to produce three NCAA participants since baseball in 2003. At the NCAA Regionals, ETSU’s Nina Muehl opened with an 8-under 64, the single lowest round carded in all of Division I golf

Individual performances stood out on the diamond as FGCU’s Chris Sale became a consensus All-America en route to becoming the conference’s fourth first-round pick in the last two years. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman contended for the national triple crown and burst onto the national scene by winning the first-ever home run derby competition - contested at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Mercer’s Jacob Tanis finished one RBI shy of the national lead in pacing the Bears back to the top of the A-Sun for the first time in more than 25 years. In softball, two hurlers established themselves among the best in the nation. Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and USC Upstate’s Morgan Childers each topped the 30-win mark - a first for the conference. The two traded the national lead in ERA throughout the season and when the year came to a close, Kiihnl finished with the best mark in the nation with Childers taking a close second. Kiihnl and Childers ranked second and third in the country in fewest hits allowed per seven innings. For the first time in league history, the conference’s last remaining charter member, Mercer, hosted the General Shale Brick Basketball Championships. The hosts advanced to the final of the men’s event setting up a standing-room-only event at the University Center against ETSU. In the end the Buccaneers won back-to-back titles. Jacksonville advanced to the NIT for the straight second year and provided the league’s first win in the event since 1996 when Ben Smith connected on a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds to stun top-seeded Arizona State. On the women’s side ETSU became the third A-Sun school to win three straight titles, FGCU advanced to the WNIT for a third consecutive year and USC Upstate registered its first 20-win season as a Divisioon I program. FOR LIFE Alums from the Atlantic Sun, both recent and historic continued to excel at the highest levels. Within the span of three days, FGCU produced its first two major league baseball players. Two pitchers of the Eagles’ 2008 A-Sun Championship squad, Casey Coleman and Sale, took their talents to Chicago as Coleman broke in with the Cubs and Sale soared through the White Sox system after spending less than two months in the minors. In late June, former Stetson All-American Chris Johnson returned to the Astros lineup and hit over .380 his first two months as a regular. On the links, former ETSU star Rhys Davies has posted a solid rookie season on the European Tour. In the spring he picked up his first win and added back-toback runner-up finishes to move into the top 50 in the world for the first time as a professional. One of his second-place showings occurred at the Wales Open where he closed with a record nine-under-par round 62 on the Ryder Cup course at the Celtic Manor. His stellar play placed Davies eighth on ESPN’s “Top 25 Golfers Under 25” list. The conference will have representation at the Ryder Cup as former league individual champion Colin Montgomerie (1985 with former member Houston Baptist) will captain the European team. Montgomerie will be the second conference alum to lead a Ryder Cup squad. Hal Sutton (Centenary) served as captain for the United States in 2004.
