The Whitten Soccer Complex is one of the most utilized on-campus facilities at Belmont University. In the fall of 2008, the field was transformed into the media headquarters for the Presidential Town Hall Debate and the team played at four different venues over the course of the season. August of 2009 marks the return of the team to its home field. Complete with an in-ground sprinkler system and lights, Whitten Soccer Complex is home to both soccer programs and various intramural activities. The Bermuda grass field sees extensive action while adding much needed “green space” to the campus. Besides the use for varsity soccer and intramural sports, the field is encircled by a lighted walking track intended for use by the entire Belmont community. Bleacher seating for up to 500 spectators is located on the east side of the complex while there is plenty of room for additional fans when necessary. The women’s soccer team went 6-2-0 at home in their first season at the Whitten Soccer Complex, highlighted by a 1-0 victory over SEC member Mississippi State in 1998.

B e l m o n t W o m e n ’ s S e a s o n P r e v i e w A foundation of championship tested veterans and a crop of athletic newcomers could be the exact formula to help the Belmont women's soccer team make its second ever appearance at the NCAA Tournament.
Elizabeth Bublis
Over four short years, Head Coach Lisa Howe has catapulted the Bruins from near the bottom of the Atlantic Sun rankings to their firstever regional ranking en route to the program's first conference tournament title. Last season, Belmont posted its second consecutive 13 win season.
"I believe that since I have been coaching at Belmont that the team has gotten a little better each year," Howe said. "That is my goal again this year." I am looking forward to working with different dynamic combinations of players. With this kind of depth and speed, we will be able to put the opponent's defenders under high pressure the majority of the game. Having reached the mountaintop with such an inexperienced squad, Howe has sculpted a plan to give the program staying power. Two years ago, she drafted this year's schedule to have the team be tested often by NCAA Tournament caliber teams. She also put wheels in motion to recruit one of her strongest, most athletic rookie classes since heading up the program. "I plan to change our style a little. We have mostly absorbed pressure and counter attacked. I think we will be able to defend and win the ball back higher up the field. I believe we will be able to possess the ball more. We were young and inexperienced last year. We have the experience, talent, and depth to be a better soccer team. "One of the biggest differences in our team is our depth. Our team will be better prepared for our opponents, because we have 25 field players who can play 11v11 full field everyday against competitive players. "Another difference in our team is our size, strength, speed, and athleticism. I say it every year, but this group is more athletic than the last. Our athletes will need time to work together, but we have greater potential than ever. "I know my style is not that of a soccer purist, but I plan to have a good balance of possession combined with using as many players in 90 minutes as possible. I plan to pressure teams and run at defenders relentlessly for the entire game. Bruin fans are going to get to watch a fast, exciting, athletic team. We will improve and learn to control a game as the season progresses."

Forwards The crew in the front will give the Bruin coaching staff many options for attack. Anchored by six veterans, seniors Elizabeth Bublis and Annie Musacchio, juniors Erica Carter, Madison Porter and Patience Whitten, the forwards increased in depth with four additions which should boost Belmont's scoring opportunities early and often. Musacchio led Belmont in scoring last year with a whopping eight goals. The Nashville, Tenn., native, who played in all 23 matches and started all but two, was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament team. Classmate Bublis also played in all 23 contests and collected four points off one goal and two assists during the season. Marietta, Ga., native Porter, who played in all 23 contests, notched three goals last season, good for third best on the team while Carter, who hails from Spring, Texas, was tied for fourth in goals last year and played in all but two matches. Memphis, Tenn., native Whitten picked up an assist and made appearances in all 23 games. "Erica is healthy after playing injured all of last season. She is so difficult to defend. Maddie is always a threat to get behind defenders as a sub. Patience hustles to create chances for her teammates. Even with all this returning talent, we are adding three more players who have the talent and ability to start Lauren Paynter, Spencer Laufer, and Danielle Stolt." Kailee Hawkins was a four-year starter at Wakefield High, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior. The Raleigh, N.C. native helped her club team, CASL Spartan Elite, to the semifinals of the North Carolina State Cup in 2009 and a fourthplace finish in the Region Premier League East the previous year. "Kailee gives us depth at outside back. She will allow us to play a high pressure, up-tempo style of defense," Howe said. Danville, Ky., native Lauren Paynter received All-Region honors each of her four years at Boyle County High School. The 2008 Region MVP also earned All-State honors four times. She set a BCHS record for goals in a career (117) and also recorded 48 career assists. "Lauren compliments our other forwards. She is a different player than Bublis, Erica, and Lofty. Lauren is going to make our attack dynamic and difficult to predict." Spencer Laufer was a twotime First Team All-District

honoree and was the leading scorer at Westside High School. The Houston, Texas native was named 5A Offensive MVP in 2008 and received Second Team All-District honors. "Spencer brings great potential. We plan to take advantage of her size, strength, and athleticism while she develops as a player in our system." Kingwood, Texas native Lauren Trappey helped Kingwood High to three consecutive 5A District Championships (2006, 2007, and 2008). The team was also twotime Regional Finalist (2007, 2008). Trappey, who served as team captain in 2009, was voted All-District twice. "Lauren is a versatile player. She is skillful and works hard. Having players like Lauren is going to make us well prepared for every game." Florida Atlantic transfer Alex Danielle Stolt brings solid Mindel collegiate experience to the Bruins. After redshirting her freshman year, she was ranked fourth on the team in shots and shots on goal last season. The Morris Plains, N.J. native earned numerous accolades at Parsippany Hills High including, four-time All-Iron Hills Conference player, four-time All-Morris County performer and three-time All-Area honoree. The two-time team MVP also received All-State honors in 2004, 2006 and 2007 and owns the school's record for career goals with 80. "Danielle is more of a natural goal scorer than our other forwards. She is agile and skillful with the ball." "This could be our deepest, most experienced, and most talented position. Elizabeth will be a four-year starter for us," Howe said. "She is the hardest working player and creates so many chances for herself and others just with hard work and desire. Jamie will be a full time forward this year after playing multiple positions last year. After making the All-Freshman Team, I think she will be even more productive this year. Midfielders "Because of some changes, Jayme Trocino is the only returning starter in the midfield. She will be joined there by Annie, who played forward last year and was our leading scorer," Howe said. "Alex Morgado has experience in the midfield. Lydia gained experience with the team last spring after transferring in January. Alex Mindel is recovering from knee surgery but should be back early in the season. Laura has a good chance to start because of her fearlessness and tactical awareness.
S o c c e r
"I am looking for our center midfielders to be more of a threat to score with either runs in the box or long range shots. I think they will be dangerous attacking on the dribble out of the midfield. I plan to change the way our midfielders defend so that they have more energy on offense." Franklin, Tenn., native Trocino, who will anchor this position, played in 22 matches, starting all but one in the middle. Sophomore Jamie Loftis had a steller rookie year, playing in all 23 contests and starting all but three. The Hermitage, Tenn., native was second on the team in goals scored with a total of four. Macon, Ga., native Laura Harris was a three-time All-Region selection at First Presbyterian Day School and was twice named All-State. As a junior at FPDS, she led the state and her team in scoring. "Laura fits a specific need for us in the midfield. I expect her to fill that role right away because of her vision and tactical awareness. She has great ability in the air and in the tackle. Lydia Wright joined Bruins after a brief stint at nationally ranked Division II Carson-Newman College. During her time with the Lady Eagles, Wright netted two goals and recorded five assists. The native of Franklin, Tenn., wrapped up her high school career at Battle Ground Academy where she was a fourtime All-State selection. "Lydia adds sophisticated weight and texture to her passes and shots. Our forwards will benefit from Lydia's entry passes. Defenders The lineup of one of the stingiest defenses in the country remains intact heading into 2009. Anchored by unanimous Preseason All-Atlantic Sun selection junior Jessica Rix, the Bruin defensive line should continue to be a force to reckon with. Other veterans returning in the back include junior Marcela Sanchez, and sophomores Meghan McBride and Gretchen Sutch. "We are returning four starters and adding six freshmen in the back. This bodes well for our present and our future," Howe said. "Jessica is one of the most talented center backs in the conference. Marcela plays well next to her and got plenty of her own experience in the spring when Jess had mono. Brandi Phillips will provide depth at center back. She tackles well and distributes well. "Morgan and Gretchen return as outside backs.

They are good attacking players who I have converted into outside backs. Kailee Hawkins, Vanessa Pepin, and Megan Rock are all solid players who will play well in my system of using four different players at this position in the same game. Jane Owen Robbins and Lauren Trappey have potential to develop and good players from which to learn." Murfreesboro, Tenn., native Phillips helped her Siegel High team to the TSSAA District 7AAA State championship in 2008. The 2008 Daily News Journal Player of the Year garnered numerous accolades including All-Area, AllDistrict, All-Midstate, All-State, All-South, and All-Region. "I am very confident in Brandi's shot blocking and heading skills. As a center back, Brandi will help us maintain possession as we go forward." Ridgeland, Miss., native Robbins joins the Bruins after completing her career at St. Joseph Catholic School. During her senior year, Robbins was tabbed team MVP and received First Team All-State honors and AllDistrict honors for a second year.

variety of positions and will develop into a key player for us." "Like Kailee, Vanessa's athleticism is going to allow us to defend higher up the field and get our outside backs forward in the attack for the entire game. Goalkeepers Belmont's net continues to be in good hands, under the watchful eyes of a trio of returners. Sophomore Sari Lin heads up one of the strongest keeper corps in the Atlantic Sun. The Carefree, Ariz., native, who played in all but one of the team's 23 matches, finished her rookie season ranked 29th in save percentage (0.852), 52nd in saves per game (5.5) and 85th in goals against average (0.954) among all NCAA Division I players. She also broke into the Belmont record book for most minutes played in a single season (1,980), a record that had not been broken since 2001, and tied for second for most shutouts with a total of six. Scranton, Pa., native Renee Pilch saw action in four contests during the season, logging over 188 minutes. She notched a 30-0 record and amassed a 0.95 save percentage. Despite not seeing any action on the field during the regular season, Ashley Hudak remained a vital cog to netminding machine for the Bruins. The Reynoldsburg, Ohio native worked to help keep Lin and Pilch on their toes while fine tuning her own skills inside the net. "I feel confident in the goalkeeper position. Sari was named to the All-Freshman Team and she was Tournament MVP after a special weekend. I expect her to continue to improve with training and experience," Howe said. "Renee's strength of being quick off her line and being able to smother breakaways and close range shooters has been valuable against Austin Peay, Vanderbilt, and UA. Lisa Howe Head Coach Fifth Season at Belmont Lisa Howe became the fifth head coach in the history of the women's soccer program when she accepted the position in the spring of 2005. In a mere four seasons, she has rebuilt Belmont's program and has helped it become a feared contender not just in the Atlantic Sun but in the Southeast region as well. Belmont shocked the Atlantic Sun in only its second trip to the conference tournament by earning its first ticket to the Big Dance in the most dramatic fashion in 2008. After a double overtime tie with Kennesaw State, a battle of penalty kicks in the championship game would decide the tournament champion and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The combination of three consecutive successful penalty shots and the quick hands of goalkeeper Sari Lin enabled the Bruins to punch their dance card for the first time in program history. For her heroics inside the net, Lin was crowned Tournament MVP, a first for Belmont. In 2007, the Bruins defied the odds and became the Cinderella story of the A-Sun. After being chosen to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll, Belmont went on to record the most league wins in its 10-year history (6) and finished the regular season in fourth place, the team's best finish to date. BU was given the third seed in its first appearance in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and did not disappoint in its first dance, knocking off the 2006 champion Jacksonville, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. The Bruins faced off against second-seeded Mercer in the semifinals and forced the match to be decided on penalty kicks after finishing with a 1-1 tie after double overtime. Despite falling in the semis, the Bruins garnered a new level of respect and cemented its name as a team to not treat lightly. In her first year at the helm, two players -- Kari Lennon and Anna Holt -- received Atlantic Sun postseason honors, the first since 2001, and two more -- Micaela Crowley and Anna Holt -- earned A-Sun

Player of the Week honors, a first for Belmont. The accolades continued at the conclusion of her second year with Sarah Brandt earning Atlantic Sun Second-Team honors and Annie Musacchio receiving an All-Freshman Team nod, only the second in Belmont's history. The program has not only soared on the field but continues to excel in the classroom under Howe's leadership. Thirty-one players over the last three years have earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors. Sixteen of those 31 received the distinction more than twice during their collegiate careers. Of the 24 player roster in 2007, over 83 percent earned A-Sun All-Academic Team honors. In back-to-back seasons, Meredith Brandt was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Team, a first for Belmont. Howe arrived at Belmont after an impressive decade long tenure at Jacksonville State where she built the program from scratch. The Gamecocks averaged nearly nine wins per year and reached postseason play six times under Howe's direction. She led JSU to four seasons with 11 or more wins and earned Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year honors in both 1999 and 2002. A total of 19 all-conference players suited up for JSU during the past decade. Howe has taken teams to four semifinal appearances at their conference tournaments. In 2002 after posting a 12-6-2 record, Jacksonville State fell in the tournament semifinals to eventual champ UCF. In 2004, the Gamecocks pulled a first round upset of Morehead State to advance to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament semifinals. Howe was named head coach at JSU in the spring of 1995, just four months before the inaugural season would kick off. Prior to her tenure with the Gamecocks, Howe coached at Berry College where she guided the team to a 13-9-1 record in 1994. Her career record now stands at 110-115-25 over 12 seasons. In addition to her head coaching experience, Howe has served as a region staff coach with the Olympic Development Program. She also headed the Alabama ODP Under-17 Girls Team and was the regional coach for the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) women's team. Howe's playing career is no less decorated. She helped lead Barry University to four consecutive bids to the NCAA Soccer Tournament including three Final Four appearances, highlighted by a Division II National Championship in 1989.

Derek Greene
Kyle Roelke
Assistant Coach First Year at Belmont
Assistant Coach First Year at Belmont
Derek Greene joined the sidelines of the Belmont women's soccer program in February of 2009 after serving as associate head coach at Ole Miss for six years. His knowledge and experience will be invaluable as he assists with recruiting, player development, film analysis and scouting. "Derek will play a major role in recruiting. He will be responsible for scouting opponents and game film analysis. He will also help further develop our players technically and tactically," said Head Coach Lisa Howe. During his tenure as associate head coach at Ole Miss, the program earned three NCAA Tournament berths, including a second-round finish in 2003, and claimed the 2005 SEC Western Division title while finishing second overall in the conference that year. He also recruited six SEC All-Freshman Team selections, one SEC Freshman of the Year and four freshman All-Americans. Prior to his stint with the Lady Rebels, Greene served as head coach at Division II Carson-Newman for four years. In 2000, CNC closed out the regular season in fourth place in the South Atlantic Conference, the highest regular-season finish in the program's history. In the first round of the SAC tournament, the Lady Eagles defeated nationallyranked Wingate to advance to the semifinals for the first time ever. Greene produced 14 All-Conference selections and 21 Academic Honor Roll recipients at Carson-Newman. Over the last 15 years, Greene, who holds his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and has served as an instructor in Tennessee on behalf of the U.S. Soccer Federation, has worked with the Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama Olympic Development Programs, as well as serving on the Region III ODP staff more recently. "It is great to add an assistant coach with Derek's experience and knowledge. We have a lot of momentum right now, as a program, and Derek just adds to that forward progress. He brings great ties to clubs, coaches, and players in the state of Tennessee and around the country. I am excited for our players to have the opportunity to work with him," said Howe. Greene coached on the Tennessee staff during the 1996-97 season. While still an undergraduate, he was the volunteer assistant for the Lady Vols in the program's first year of NCAA competition. Greene began his coaching career in 1992 with the Knoxville Stars Soccer Club. He went on to lead the Diadora Impact Soccer Club to three state championships and one Region III semifinals. He has also served as an instructor at the UNC girls' soccer camp as well as Clemson's camp in past years. A member of the men's soccer club team while at UT, Greene later spent time playing semi-pro as a member of the PDL Chattanooga Express. The Knoxville native, who earned his bachelor's degree in economics from UT in 1996, married the former Gail Baumhardt in August of 2008.
Kyle Roelke, who enters his first year as a full-time assistant with the Belmont women's soccer program in 2009, brings a wealth of experience from the sidelines and the field. No stranger to the Bruins, he spent the 2008 season as a graduate assistant working under head coach Lisa Howe and the previous year working with BU's men's team. His focus will be working with the Bruins' goalkeepers. Roelke helped to make 2008 a record setting year for the Bruins in his first year with the program. BU won its first conference championship allowing them to move on to the NCAA tournament, another program first. Under his tutelage, freshman Sari Lin had a breakout year inside the net during the historic campaign. Lin, who led the conference in save percentage, was second in shutouts and was third in GAA, received numerous awards including Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP and being named to the Freshman All-Conference team. Lin also went on to capture three national rankings - 29th in save percentage (0.852), 52nd in saves per game (5.5) and 85th in GAA (0.954). Last year, Roelke also assisted in leading Father Ryan High School to the girls' state soccer championship, knocking off No. 4 nationally ranked Baylor in the state semifinals. He also served as the Brentwood Soccer Club (BSC) goalkeeping director for both the boys and girls programs and coached at the BSC Academy for the nine- and ten-year-old boys. In 2007, he served as the assistant coach at Centennial High School in Nashville, Tenn., under head coach Sandy Pollock. As a player for Belmont, the Mishawaka, Ind., native was a three year starter and led the Atlantic Sun in shutouts during his senior year. The three-time A-Sun Conference Player of the Week still holds numerous career goalkeeping records for the Bruins. After the completion of his undergraduate career, Roelke spent time all over the world playing soccer, including training with Ross County of the Scottish First Division, Inverness Caledonian Thistle of the Scottish Premiership and Afturelding of the Icelandic Soccer League. In the winter of 2008, he traveled to Xelaju, Guatemala to play. Most recently, Roelke played professionally for the Carolina Giants in Puerto Rico. He also saw action with two PDL teams, the Nashville Metros, where he was a two-year captain and four-year starter, and the Indiana Invaders. After he graduated from Belmont University with a degree in business in 2007, Kyle went on to complete a Master's in Sports Administration from his alma mater two years later. He has also earned advanced regional diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

BELMONT UNIVERSITY Costa Rica, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, South Africa and Spain. Belmont also serves as a regional center of the East-West Center for the Development of Asian Studies. Vital to the Belmont student experience are service learning, volunteerism and mission projects that invest in surrounding communities.Through the efforts of students and faculty, Belmont has touched lives in Nashville's charitable organizations, its growing Hispanic community, area tutoring programs, neighboring businesses and mentoring programs, as well as inner-city and overseas mission projects, including trips to the Appalachian Mountains and the Ukraine.
In the mid-1800s, the campus was known as Adelicia Acklen's Belle Monte estate. The antebellum mansion remains today, flanked by university buildings separated in age by a century. The first educational institution on the estate was the original Belmont College (1890-1913), offering elementary school through junior college education to young ladies. The school merged with Ward Seminary to become the prestigious WardBelmont School for Women (1913-1951) and in 1951 became the coed Belmont College. In 1991, the college became Belmont University and, this year, began the 115th year of higher education on this site. Belmont continually reflects its rich heritage as it excels in the academic area. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report named Belmont University as a most cited “School to Watch” in its current research, a high honor that indicates the strength of Belmont’s reputation among universities nationwide. Last year, in the top 20 of the best colleges and universities in the South in the magazine's "master's" category. VISION Belmont's vision is to be a premier teaching university bringing together the best of liberal arts and professional education in a Christian community of learning and service. Belmont strives to enable men and women from diverse backgrounds to engage and transform the world with disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage and faith.
Among its student body of over 5,300, are students from nearly every state and more than 25 countries. In addition to seven baccalaureate degrees in over 60 areas of study, Belmont offers master's degrees in Business Administration, Accountancy, English, Education (including Sport Administration), Music, Nursing and Occupational Therapy, and doctorates in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. Under the leadership of President Robert Fisher, Belmont celebrates more than a century of academic heritage. Perhaps most notably, Belmont, for the fourth year in a row, holds a Top 15 regional ranking in the “Best Universities—Masters” category in the annual U.S. News & World Report college guide. Belmont has risen 11 spots in the annual U.S. News ranking since 2003. Also noteworthy, Belmont has earned the Atlantic Sun Academic Champion Trophy seven of the last eight years - with over 66 percent of its student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in 200809. Moreover, Belmont has opened several impressive new facilities on campus which have enhanced the learning environment: the Massey Performing Arts Center, the Curb Event Center, Gordon E. Inman Center and the newly unveiled Troutt Theater. Belmont hosted the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate, further exposing the school to a global audience. In short, Belmont has experienced remarkable growth and achievement - increases in average ACT scores, innovative program development, impressive campus expansion, land and facility development and establishing itself as a national leader in quality improvement.
Believing that every student is created for a purpose in life, Belmont encourages students to explore their passions and develop their talents to meet the world's needs. ACADEMICS AND MORE Belmont's boundaries continue to extend beyond the Nashville campus through its Cool Springs campus south of Nashville and organized programs such as the Washington Center program and music business' Belmont West in Los Angeles and Belmont East in New York City. Dr. Robert Fisher President
Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves as President of Belmont University, a position he has held since April 2000. During his tenure the university’s enrollment has risen by nearly 70 percent while the campus itself has expanded significantly with the additions of the Curb Event Center and Beaman Student Life Center, the Gordon E. Inman Center, the Troutt Theater complex and several new residence halls and parking garages. But Dr. Fisher’s greatest sense of accomplishment comes not from new campus structures, stronger endowments or a larger student body. Rather, he measures achievement through witnessing education’s impact on each individual student. “The student is the focus of all our efforts here at Belmont,” Fisher said, “and our top priority is meeting the needs of those students. My life's mission is to help create experiences that transform people, especially students, in ways that enable them to become all they were created to be.” Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Fisher was vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas State University for four years and was dean of the School of Business at Henderson State University, his alma mater, for 10 years. Fisher earned a B.S.B.A. from Henderson State, an M.B.A. from the University of Memphis and a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. In addition to his success as both faculty member and higher education administrator, Fisher is also an accomplished author with his most recent work, Life Is a Gift: Inspiration from the Soon Departed, released in 2008. Co-authored with his wife Judy, Life Is a Gift features a collection of lessons learned from interviews with 104 terminally ill patients of Alive Hospice in Nashville. Dr. Fisher previously co-authored Real Dream Teams: Seven Practices Used by WorldClass Team Leaders to Achieve Extraordinary Results, published by St. Lucie Press, with Belmont’s Vice President of University Advancement Dr. Bo Thomas. Dr. Fisher has published numerous articles on management and leadership and has consulted with a wide variety of organizations on human resource and strategic planning issues, including Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Alltel, Arkla Gas and the U.S. Department of Transportation, among others. In 1992, Fisher served in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a Fulbright Scholar, conducting research and consulting with the National Institute of Public Administration. He also provided a keynote address at the Arabian Society for Human Resource Management Conference in Bahrain in 1998. Active in his community, Fisher has served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, the Country Music Foundation, the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Symphony, the PENCIL Foundation, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Alliance for Public Education, TICUA, Cumberland Region Tomorrow, Fifth Third Bank and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Nashville, participates in Nashville’s Agenda, and is a 2001 graduate of Leadership Nashville. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Arkansas Enterprise Group, a division of Southern Development Bank. Married for 38 years, Dr. Fisher and his wife Judy share in their commitment to Belmont University. The Fishers are the proud parents of three grown children and have two wonderful sons-in-law and four perfect grandsons.
Mike Strickland Director of Athletics Now entering his 14th year as Director of Athletics, Mike Strickland has led Belmont's Department of Athletics through its infancy stages as a new NCAA Division I program to become one that sees annual success on the field and in the classroom. During his tenure at Belmont, the program has expanded the number of teams it fields, joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, enhanced its facilities, and established a reputation producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. Since arriving in Nashville in 1996, Strickland has overseen the inception of six new sports at Belmont: women's soccer, women's golf and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, the University has built the Frances Bond Davis Tennis Courts and the Whitten Soccer Complex, as well the most recent partnership with Metro Parks for athletic fields at Rose Park. This exciting new venture will house Belmont baseball, softball, soccer, and track & field. Two of the most important achievements of his tenure at Belmont are the acceptance of Belmont into the Atlantic Sun Conference and the opening of the Curb Event Center. During his tenure, Strickland has overseen a program expansion from 11 to 17 teams of competition, spearheaded membership into the Atlantic Sun Conference, spurred athletic facility enhancement and forged a reputation of producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. In 2008, Belmont became the first school in Atlantic Sun Conference history to represent the league in three consecutive NCAA Men's Basketball Championships. Adding conference championships in women's cross country, women's soccer and volleyball during the past academic year, Belmont Athletics has won a staggering 26 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships since becoming a member institution in 2001-02 - far and away the league standard. In addition, the school has hosted nine conference championships over the past five years, most recently the 2006 A-Sun Volleyball Championship.
Strickland has taken a leadership role in the A-Sun serving as chairman of the tournament committee and presently serves as a member of the conference's membership committee. As well as the program's success on the field, his tenure has seen the building of the exquisite Curb Event Center. The $52 million facility, which opened in the fall of 2003, has become the centerpiece of the athletics program. The complex houses a new 5,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball, locker rooms for all sports, a training facility and weight room, as well as administrative offices for the Athletic Department. Off the field, the athletic department has made academic achievement the cornerstone of its definition of success. Belmont has won the Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy seven of the past eight years. The Bruins boasted over twothirds of their student athletes with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale during the past academic year. Belmont is the only school to win the trophy five straight times (2002-2006). Also of significance, Belmont has earned distinction from the NCAA in each of their Academic Progress Rate (APR) reports. Strickland brings varied years of experience to the program, including nine years as athletics director at Murray State University prior to coming to Belmont. While at Murray State, Strickland served on numerous Ohio Valley Conference committees as well as serving on the NCAA IAA football advisory committee and the NCAA rifle committee. Prior to serving at Murray State, Strickland was an Associate Athletics Director at Wichita State University from 1983-87, where he was responsible for all business operations for the department. Strickland earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Georgia Southern University and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Georgia. In June of 2009,Strickland received the Under Armour National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division I Southeast Region A.D. of the Year Award. Strickland was honored at the annual NACDA convention in Orlando, Fla. Strickland is married to the former Martha Thomas, an English instructor at Nashville State Community College. The couple has two children - Leanna Elizabeth, an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee, and Sara Grace, a Belmont University graduate who is married to Jared Vaughn - and one grandchild, Jacob.

The ASun boasts a blend of the most dynamic and prestigious private and public institutions in the region, with all committed to the conference goal of Building Winners for Life. The experience for a student-athlete in the A-Sun is supported by the entire university community, from coaches to faculty, and from the CEO’s to the athletic and academic support staff. Atlantic Sun studentathletes compete in outstanding facilities throughout the conference and in some of top markets in the Southeast. Eight A-Sun schools compete in the top 10 media markets within the conference’s five-state footprint. With All-America selections, National All-Academic honorees, teams and individuals qualifying for and advancing in NCAA Championship play, Atlantic Sun student-athletes achieve at the highest levels of collegiate athletics. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Continuing a tradition of academic achievement, more than 57 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2008-09 academic year. Fifteen student-athletes earned places on the 2008-09 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Teams. Belmont led the impressive institutional totals in the race for the AllAcademic Trophy for the seventh time in eight years with 66.5 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better. Belmont senior Andy Wicke, Jacksonville senior Jeremy Gillan, Lipscomb junior Kellie Sirus and Campbell senior Karlie Love earned spots on CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America teams. Lipscomb’s men and women track and field teams and the women’s cross country team ranked among the top 10 GPAs in NCAA Division I, in being recognized as All-Academic Scholar Teams from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Belmont men’s cross country team posted the fifth-highest GPA, according to the USTFCCCA. Wicke, one of the Bruins’ most celebrated student-athletes, shared the conference’s male Scholar Athlete of the Year award and earned the conference’s Postgraduate Scholarship. Mercer’s Chereese Rowe earned the conference’s second Postgraduate Scholarship. Wicke earned national acclaim as he became one of just two men’s basketball players to receive an educational grant through the NCAA postgraduate scholarship program. For his dedicated academic success and community service, Wicke landed on the Lowe’s All-Senior All-America Second Team and was one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award. ATHLETIC SUCCESS For the second straight season, the A-Sun made early headlines on the hardwood as Mercer, under new head coach Bob Hoffman, went on the road and defeated Alabama and Auburn within a four-day span, shooting the Bears up to the top spot in the RPI. At the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Championship, ETSU ended Belmont’s three-year reign, winning its first A-Sun Tournament title and making the NCAA field for the eighth time. During the Championship, Courtney Pigram became just the second player in league history to reach the 2000-point plateau. Two players could reach that mark this season in Mercer’s
James Florence and Campbell’s Jonathan Rodriguez. Florence and Campbell begin the season as the second- and third-highest active scorers in the nation. During the baseball season, three A-Sun hurlers, Lipscomb’s Rex Brothers and Kennesaw State’s duo of Chad Jenkins and Kyle Heckathorn moved up the draft boards of Major League teams with every dominating performance. Brothers turned in one of the league’s top single-season strikeout performances; Jenkins posted a 41-inning scoreless streak and Heckathorn capped his season with a dominating 15-strikeout performance against UNF, earning National Player of the Week honors. On draft night, Jenkins became just the seventh A-Sun player to be a first-round selection, going to the Blue Jays. In the supplemental phase of the first round, the Rockies picked Rex Brothers and the Brewers tabbed Heckathorn. In softball, the conference turned in one of its finest seasons in history, especially during the non-conference season. Against out-of-conference opposition, A-Sun schools posted a .602 win percentage, the fifth-highest in the nation, trailing only the SEC, Pac-10, ACC and Big 12. Five schools finished with win percentages better than .600 and FGCU and Mercer reached the 40-win mark. The Eagles established a league record for win percentage at .839 in posting a 47-9 record. For the second-consecutive May, Campbell emerged victorious at the A-Sun Championship, led by the dominating performance of MVP Brittany Stanley. She pitched all 31 innings, recorded two shutouts and struck out 26 against only two walks. One of the most dominating athletes in Atlantic Sun history closed out her career in Jacksonville’s Natasha Harvey. She led the Dolphins team titles in both Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field for a fourth-straight year and won the inaugural MVP honors at both meets as well as the Most Outstanding Field Performer award. During her four years, she won a combined 18 individual events, five Most Outstanding Performer awards, both Most Outstanding Freshman performers in addition to the two MVP honors. Off the track, she won the A-Sun’s Female StudentAthlete of the Year Award, was the A-Sun’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award and appeared on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic team for a fourthstraight year. The 2009-10 athletic year promises to be an exciting one for the Atlantic Sun as UNF and Kennesaw State earned full Division-I status and will be eligible for all postseason tournaments. FGCU’s champion volleyball and baseball programs and USC Upstate’s soccer and softball programs have also gained access to A-Sun and NCAA postseason play. For the first time in league history, Mercer and it’s University Center will play host to the General Shale Brick Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. The Baseball Championship leaves Florida for the first time in 16 years for Nashville, Tenn. and Lipscomb’s Dugan Field. FGCU landed its first championship, and will host volleyball in November. These new additions and venues make the upcoming year a hotly anticipated season for the Atlantic Sun.
