The brand new E.S. Rose Park opened for Belmont Athletics in the spring of 2011. The men’s soccer team will take to the new pitch for the first time this fall, leaving Whitten Soccer Complex behind after 13 years of action. Belmont has been working with Nashville’s Metro Board of Parks and Recreation to provide $8 million worth of enhancements to nearby E.S. Rose Park which allows the University to lease space for athletics. The enhancements provide new resources for the Edgehill community and Belmont student-athletes including accessible walking trails, as well as softball, baseball, track and soccer facilities. The Metro Parks Board maintains the exclusive authority to schedule the use of the park and will remain the sole owner of the park and its improvements. Utilizing the new sports fields and their accompanying concessions will be neighbors from the Edgehill community, athletic teams from nearby public schools, the youth and adult recreational programs of Metro Parks, neighborhood churches, community groups, nonprofit sports organizations and Belmont University. The university also agreed to award eight full Belmont scholarships and two partial ones to students in the Edgehill community and help sponsor neighborhood little league baseball and softball teams.

INTERNATIONAL SOCCER
While not readily confused with Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona or Amsterdam as a soccer mecca, Nashville is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the top American cities to host premier events. LP Field, home of the NFL Tennessee Titans, has played host to several marquee international matches. The Music City shined in its debut on April 20, 2004, when the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer played Tecos UAG of the Mexican Primera Division. Later that year, the United States Women’s National Team hosted a friendly against Canada. In 2006, the United States Men’s National Team faced Morocco. In 2008, the Americans hosted the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying at LP Field, with Canada, Guatemala and Honduras taking part. In April of 2009, the United States Men’s National Team defeated Trinidad & Tobago in a World Cup Qualifying Match in Nashville behind three goals from Jozy Altidore. Most recently, in March of 2011, the Men’s National Team played a friendly against Paraguay, drawing a Tennessee record crowd of 29,059 fans. With knowledgeable fans and a top-of-the-line facility, Nashville has cemented its place as a mainstay on the international host site rota.

Earle DAVIDSON Head Coach • 15th season • Vanderbilt ‘89 Belmont men’s soccer and Head Coach Earle Davidson have become somewhat synonymous. That is because the Vanderbilt graduate has coached the Bruins every season in the Belmont NCAA era. Committed to excellence on and off the field, Davidson enters his 15th season as the head coach at Belmont in the fall of 2011. Davidson, the 2003 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year, hopes to lead Belmont back to the conference tournament for the first time since 2008. Over the past two years he has helped lead Brandon Tarr to multiple individual awards, including Second Team All-Atlantic Sun in 2009 and 2010. Tarr also became the first student-athlete in the program’s history to be named A-Sun Freshman of the Year. First year Bruin Nico Olsak gave BU yet another member of the A-Sun All-Freshman Team after tying the school’s single-season record for assists, with eight. Davidson’s tenure has also been marked by unrivaled academic achievement. Including a pair of recent Academic All-District nods from Brett Parker in 2008 and 2010, the Bruins have earned eight such honors since 2001. Marcos Cabrera also added Academic All-America honors in 2001 and 2002 under Davidson. Belmont men’s soccer annually stands atop the Atlantic Sun in Academic AllConference honorees. Each of the past six years, the Bruins have been recognized by the NCAA in its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) Report - which identifies elite program’s in academic eligibility and retention. In 2008 the Bruins went 11-8-2, reaching the Atlantic Sun Conference Semifinals despite no true home matches, as venerable Whitten Field hosted the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate. The team reached the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the sixth straight season, as Dan Meacock and Will Moorad were named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. 2007 saw the Bruins earn a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. The Bruins notched a signature win at nationally-ranked Furman to end the regular season. Three of Davidson’s players earned All-Atlantic Sun honors (Jay Ayres, Ian Schinelli and T.J. Brown). Ayres was named the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season before embarking on a successful run with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer. Davidson led the Bruins to a 7-9-2 record in the 2006 season, highlighted by four non-conference home wins and three players earning All-Atlantic Sun honors (Jay Ayres, Ian Schinelli, and Eric Susewind). In 2005, the squad saw junior J.P. Rodrigues named Defensive Player of the Year in addition to his placement on the all-conference first team. Sophomore Eric Susewind earned second team honors. The Bruins had a breakout season in 2003 under Davidson's direction. The team improved their win total by four matches, equaling the school record for wins at the time, with nine. Belmont also qualified for postseason play for the first time since 1995. Behind the prolific goal scoring of two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection Fernando Castellanos, the Bruins went 9-7-1 and finished tied for second in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Davidson's commitment to tightening up the defensive end helped spark the team's rejuvenation. Goalkeeper Matt Renfrow, along with Carey Alexander and freshmen starters Chris Anderson and J.P. Rodrigues, led the team to a school record six shutouts while the team posted its first sub-2.00 GAA since the 1995 campaign. "Our patience has paid off and Earle has the program on the verge of becoming a yearly contender in the Atlantic Sun," stated Director of Athletics Mike Strickland. "The route has not been easy for the men's soccer program, but Earle's enthusiasm and professionalism has been ingrained within the team. Great things are happening and we are excited about 2011."

B U MEN’S SOCCER Obviously, much of the success from the last few years can be attributed to the recent recruiting efforts. Castellanos finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in Belmont history and became the first Belmont player to earn All-Atlantic Sun honors. Channing Twyner earned a spot on the 2002 A-Sun All-Freshman team. In 2004, two Bruins were named to the All-Freshman team, a first for Belmont -- Jay Ayres and Robert Fernandez. J.P. Rodrigues, Eric Susewind, Ian Schinelli, Dan Meacock and Will Moorad continued the tradition of individual achievement. Most recently, Brandon Tarr became the first Belmont player to be named A-Sun Freshman of the year in 2009, and was named Second Team All-Conference each of his first two years.

During Davidson's tenure, the Bruins have faced some of the very best teams in the nation, but they had never encountered the level of competition seen during the 2000 season. Belmont was accepted as an affiliate member of the Missouri Valley Conference just as the Valley was hitting its competitive stride. The Bruins faced three top-25 teams that season, and nearly half of the conference's 12 teams were ranked at some point while a pair of teams reached the NCAA Final Four. Davidson’s career at Belmont began in 1995 when he joined Ronnie Littlejohn's staff. Following the 1996 season, the head coaching job came open and Davidson became the third head coach in school history. In Davidson’s first season as Belmont's head coach, he led the team to a 5-11 record that was highlighted by a 2-1 victory over the Memphis Tigers who were at the time ranked in the Top25 in the nation. Davidson has seen over a dozen former players begin professional soccer careers, with several of them playing for the local ALeague team, the Nashville Metros/Tennessee Rhythm. Chris Van Atta has played for an indoor soccer team in Kansas City, while former assistant coach Ben Fisher has played for the Cincinnati Riverhawks. J.P. Rodrigues was drafted #1 overall by the USL Miami FC franchise in 2006 and recently signed with FC Tampa Bay. Jay Ayres has competed with both the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS and the Charleston Battery of the USL. Born in New York City and growing up in New Jersey, Davidson played his high school soccer at Mendham High School. He graduated in 1985 and decided to come to Nashville and play collegiately at Vanderbilt University. His career at Vanderbilt culminated during his senior season when Davidson received the 1989 McDonald's Award for Outstanding Performance. Following his collegiate playing days, Coach Davidson moved west to Salt Lake City, Utah and joined the Salt Lake Sting of the now defunct American Professional Soccer League (APSL). After playing one season out there, he returned to Nashville to begin a five-year career with the Nashville Metros, at the time a member of the United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL). Following the end of his professional career, Davidson decided to continue his passion for the game by joining the coaching ranks. His first opportunity at collegiate level coaching came immediately following his playing days at Vanderbilt when he became the women's team assistant. He served double-duty during the 1990 season, as he also assisted the VU men's team. Davidson also became the Director of Coaching for the Music City Sting Club Teams. In addition to these coaching duties, he has the honor of assisting with Tennessee's Olympic Development Program Teams. Davidson married former Belmont women's soccer assistant coach Alexis Hyrup in May of 2003. They have two children, Griffin Hyrup (age 2), and Greenlee Jane born in March of 2011. The family resides in Nashville.

Assistant Coach • First season • Fresno State ‘00 Belmont men's soccer coach Earle Davidson announced the hiring of J.J. Wozniak as the new assistant coach for the Bruin program on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011. "We're very excited to have J.J. here," Davidson said. "He has a winning track record at a playing level, at a coaching level, and at a director of coaching level. J.J. brings a lot of experience from working with field players and goalkeepers at a very successful club. He has been involved in producing some of the best players that we have in America today, so we are definitely ready to have him make his imprint on Belmont soccer." A graduate of Fresno State, earning a B.A. in Sociology in 2000, Wozniak comes to Nashville following nine years of coaching with the California Odyssey Soccer Club. He had held many responsibilities for the program, and had been the Director of Coaching since 2007. Wozniak's teams saw much success, as the California Odyssey was one of the original 63 clubs invited into the US Soccer National Development Academy, won five National Championships, and had back to back Development Academy National Finalists in 2009 and 2010. The former goalkeeper at Fresno State has experience coaching at the college level as well. Wozniak returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for the Bulldogs for four seasons, from 2000 to 2003. Prior to his coaching stint at Fresno State, Wozniak excelled on the field during his senior season in 1996, earning All-WAC and All Far West Region honors, as well as being named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference Player of the Year. He held a 0.92 goals against average while at Fresno State, helping lead the Bulldogs to a number three national ranking and a victory over number one seeded Washington in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They went on to lose in the National Quarterfinals to Creighton. Prior to transferring to Fresno State, Wozniak played at Saint Louis University from 1992 to 1995, as the Billikins made it to the NCAA Tournament each of his three years in competition. After finishing his career at Fresno State, Wozniak went on to play professional soccer for the next five years before settling into the coaching ranks. He made appearances for a number of teams in the USL, the USISL, and Major League Soccer, including the San Jose Clash and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Wozniak received USISL Division 3 Goalkeeper of the Year accolades in 1997 and was named USL Division 3 Goalkeeper of the Year in 2001. Wozniak holds the USSF National B coaching license. He and his wife Carrie have one son; Jacob Michael, who will turn two this year.
Eric SUSEWIND Assistant Coach • Fourth season • Belmont ‘07
Eric Susewind returns for his fourth season as an assistant coach for men’s soccer this fall. Susewind enjoyed a decorated playing career at Belmont. A four-year starter and two-year team captain for the Bruins, Susewind earned Second Team All-Atlantic Sun honors in 2005 and 2006. Versatile and skilled, Susewind established himself as one of the top players in the conference at both forward and midfield. SEASON PREVIEW
MEN’S SOCCER
BU
Overview With 12 upperclassmen returning, five experienced sophomores who received plenty of starting experience during their first season in Nashville, and a slew of incoming talent, the Belmont University men’s soccer team is prepared to make a splash this 2011 season. The Bruins are ready to return to the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the first time since 2008, and are aiming to do so in the last chance before leaving the league for the 2012 season. In addition to the seven freshmen, junior transfer Pedro Miranda, and first year assistant coach J.J Wozniak, Belmont welcomes one more newcomer to the men’s soccer program in 2011…the brand new E.S. Rose Park, which witnessed its grand opening this past spring. The new state of the art facility is home to the weather friendly “field turf” and a beautiful view of downtown Nashville. Year In Review In 2010 the Belmont men’s soccer team doubled its win total from the previous year, improving from three victories in 2009, to a record of 6-12-0 a year ago. After falling in each of their first two contests, a pair of road non-conference tilts, the Bruins bounced back with two straight victories en route to winning the Mafiaoza’s Invitational at Belmont’s Whitten Soccer Complex. BU topped Centenary 5-2 behind two goals by senior Brett Parker, as well as one goal, one assist performances by sophomore Brandon Tarr and junior Will Moorad. The Bruins then defeated Gardner-Webb by a score of 2-1, as Tarr tallied two more goals, was named to the All-Tournament Team and earned A-Sun Player of the Week honors for his performance. Moorad, junior Edgardo Padilla, and sophomore Bradley Shuck also earned the accolades for their accomplishments in the tournament. After another road non-conference loss, the Bruins went 1-1 at the Lipscomb Invitational to take second place in the tournament. Belmont fell to UAB, but was victorious over UNC Asheville, 2-1, when freshman Cody Stratton’s goal gave BU the win. Tarr, Shuck and freshman Diego Figueroa, who scored two goals on the weekend, earned all-tournament honors at Lipscomb. Yet another road non-conference defeat, this time of the overtime variety to Duquesne, came just before the Bruins opened up Atlantic Sun play. Belmont dropped a pair of home
tilts to Stetson and FGCU, before heading on the road to top North Florida and Jacksonville. Winning both games in overtime, Moorad connected on the game-winner at UNF, while Tarr won it for BU at Jacksonville. Tarr totaled three scores on the weekend, while freshman Nico Olsak finished the two games with one goal and two assists. Belmont dropped two more home contests against Lipscomb and ETSU, and then picked up its first A-Sun home win against USC Upstate with a 4-1 victory to keep hopes alive. Conference losses at Campbell and at Mercer left the Bruins just a half of a game out of the conference playoffs. Tarr was named to the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team for the second straight year, while Olsak earned A-Sun All-Freshman Team accolades following the regular season. Forwards The Bruins return at trio of forwards that all rank in the top five on Belmont’s all-time goal scoring list. Junior Brandon Tarr has been BU’s top scorer each of the past two seasons, recording eight goals and two assists as a freshman, and then seven scores and six helpers last year as a sophomore. Tarr was the A-Sun Freshman of the Year in 2009, and has been named to the All-Conference Second Team each of his first two years in Nashville. The coaches in the league recognized his talent by placing him on the Preseason All-Conference Team for the second straight summer. Seniors Will Moorad and Dan Meacock combined for six goals and 16 total points last season. The former’s quickness and the latter’s strength will make for a difficult combination for opposing defenses this season. With 15 and 14 career goals respectively, Moorad and Meacock should give the Bruins plenty of firepower up top. Sophomore Cody Stratton, who tallied two goals and two assists in his first season at Belmont, will give BU depth at both forward and midfield during 2011. Midfielders Senior captain Edgardo Padilla returns for his final season as the leader of the Belmont midfield. The Texas native has missed only two games in his first three years with the Bruins, and is one assist shy of breaking into the BU all-time top 10. He is joined by five returners in the midfield, including two that started a combined 35 matches last year.

B U MEN’S SOCCER Sophomores Nico Olsak and Diego Figueroa made an immediate impact in 2010. Olsak earned Atlantic Sun AllFreshman Team accolades following a five goal, eight assist freshman campaign. Olsak tied former Bruin Paulo Boero for the single-season assist record at Belmont, and is tied for 10th for career helpers after only one season in Nashville. Figueroa helped control the midfield, while tallying two goals and earning All-Tournament honors at the Lipscomb Invitatoinal. Austin Embry returns to the pitch as a junior, after missing the entire 2010 season with an injury. He will help solidify the midfield with his ability to win balls in the air. Embry holds the BU single-season record for games started, recording 21 back in 2008. Senior Emerick Witkowski and junior Sam Miller give the Bruins plenty of size and experience in the midfield. The former will also put in work at the back, while the latter has experience at forward, giving Belmont plenty of versatility. Newcomers Pedro Miranda, Tyler Vieth, Luke Woodward, and Himesh Zaver will provide added depth to the Belmont midfield. Defenders Returning five players with at least nine starts last season, the Belmont defense has enough experience to hold its own in 2011. Senior captain T.J. Brown and junior Bradley Shuck, who both started all 18 games last year, give the Bruins a solid core to work their backfield around. In addition, Shuck recorded his first career goal and assist last season, as he has proven to be strong coming forward on set pieces. Senior Alex Davis will provide added depth to the Belmont defense, while also spending some time in the midfield with his ability to move forward well. Sophomores Charlie Dankert and Alex Jenison started 14 and 11 games last year, respectively. Their experience and quality play as freshman will give the BU coaching staff confidence in the defense heading into 2011. Sophomore Phillip Dormont, who will spend time in the back and midfield, rounds out the returning defenders, while Markus Seppa, Cole Peters, and Charlie Delmar make up the incoming defense for the Bruins. Seppa, a native of Finland, is one of the most highly touted freshman defenders Belmont has had in a while. Goalkeepers Last year’s goalkeeper situation was a bit of a rollercoaster of injuries and playing time, as no goalie earned more than eight starts in the net. What that means for senior Juho Illi and junior Lou Manning is plenty of experience heading into the 2011 season. Illi started eight games last year, going 3-5 with a 2.86 goals against average. Manning, who is currently fifth alltime at Belmont with a 2.08 career goals against average, started six contests and finished with a team-best .745 save percentage. Adding to the BU goalkeeper depth will be freshman John Nardozzi of Lutz, Florida. Schedule The Bruins will take on two NCAA Tournament teams from 2010 in hopes of preparing to make it back to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament for the first time since 2008. Belmont will open the season with the first of three Missouri Valley Conference opponents, traveling to Missouri State on August 27. The Bruins then return home to host Memphis on September 1, before heading back on the road to take on UCF on September 4. The Knights made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell at Michigan by a score of 2-1.
SEASON PREVIEW BU will then return home to Nashville for a pair of tournaments on back-to-back weekends. The first of which will be the Belmont Invitational at the brand new E.S. Rose Park. Lipscomb, Georgia Southern, and VMI will be in town for the games on September 9 and 11. On September 16 and 18 the Bruins will travel across town to take on Bowling Green and IPFW in the Lipscomb Invitational. A couple of MVC opponents are on the schedule before the Bruins' A-Sun schedule begins. 2010 MVC Runner-up SIU Edwardsville will host BU on September 22, while Evansville will come to Nashville on September 25 for a 1:00 p.m. tilt. Defending A-Sun Champion and NCAA Tournament participant ETSU is the first conference foe for Belmont in 2011. The Bucs, who lost to College of Charleston by a score of 3-2 in the NCAA First Round, will come to Rose Park on September 29. It is then a pair of road games against USC Upstate and Lipscomb on subsequent Sundays to open October. North Florida and Jacksonville will then come to town on October 14 and 16, before the Bruins head to Florida for road tilts at Stetson and FGCU October 21 and 23. A home contest against Mercer on October 30 rounds out the A-Sun schedule, and then Belmont will host Eastern Illinois in the regular season finale on the first of November. This year's Atlantic Sun Championships are to be held on November 9, 11, and 13 at multiple sites across the league.

BELMONT UNIVERSITY
In the mid-1800s, Belmont University’s campus was known as Adelicia Acklen’s Belle Monte estate. The antebellum mansion remains today, flanked by university buildings separated in age by more than a century. The first educational institution on the estate was the original Belmont College (1890-1913), offering elementary school through junior college education to young ladies. The school merged with Ward Seminary to become the prestigious WardBelmont School for Women (19131951) and in 1951, became the coed Belmont College. In 1991, the college became Belmont University, and this year, began the 122nd year of higher education on this site. Belmont continually reflects its rich heritage as it excels in academics. For 2011, U.S. News & World Report placed Belmont University at No. 5 in the Best Regional Universities—South category. Perhaps even more notable than the top five ranking, Belmont has stood out for three consecutive years as one of U.S. News & World Report’s most cited “Schools to Watch” in the nation. Belmont’s vision is to be a premier teaching university bringing together the best of liberal arts and professional education in a Christian community of learning and service. Belmont strives to empower men and women from diverse
MEN’S SOCCER
backgrounds to engage and transform the world with disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage and faith. Believing that every student is created for a purpose in life, Belmont encourages students to explore their passions and develop their talents to meet the world’s needs. Belmont’s boundaries continue to extend beyond the Nashville campus through its Cool Springs campus south of Nashville and organized programs such as the Washington Center program and music business’ Belmont West in Los Angeles and Belmont East in New York City. Study-abroad programs place students in China, Costa Rica, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, South Africa and Spain. Belmont also serves as a regional site of the East-West Center for the Development of Asian Studies. Vital to the Belmont student experience are service learning, volunteerism and mission projects that invest in surrounding communities. Through the efforts of students and faculty, Belmont has touched lives in Nashville’s charitable organizations, its growing Hispanic community, area tutoring programs, neighboring businesses and mentoring programs, as well as inner-city and overseas mission projects, including trips to the Appalachian Mountains and the Ukraine.

Among its student body of more than 6,000, are students from every state and more than 29 countries. In addition to seven baccalaureate degrees in over 75 areas of study, Belmont offers master’s degrees in Business Administration, Accountancy, English, Education, Sport Administration, Music, Nursing and Occupational Therapy, and doctorates in Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Law. Under the leadership of President Robert Fisher, Belmont celebrates more than a century of an accomplished academic heritage and commitment to educational innovation. Notably, Belmont has earned the Atlantic Sun Academic Champion Trophy eight of the last 10 years. Moreover, Belmont has recently opened several impressive new facilities on campus, including McWhorter Hall and two new freshmen residences—Patton Hall and Bear House. Still, one of Belmont’s biggest achievements came in 2008 with the hosting of the Town Hall Presidential Debate, the first presidential debate to be held in Tennessee. Belmont’s remarkable growth and achievement certainly give credence to its theme, From Here to Anywhere!

PRESIDENT
Dr. Robert FISHER President • 12th Year at Belmont Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves as President of Belmont University, a position he has held since April 2000. During his tenure the University's enrollment has risen by 81 percent while the campus itself has expanded significantly with the additions of the Curb Event Center and Beaman Student Life Center, the Gordon E. Inman Center, the Troutt Theater complex, McWhorter Hall and several new residence halls and parking garages. Under his leadership Belmont University also broke into the Top 5 for the first time in the Best Regional Universities South category in U.S. News & World Report's analysis of America's Best Colleges. Soaring to No. 5 in the 2011 edition, Belmont was also honored for the third year in a row as one of the top schools nationwide for "leading the pack in improvements and innovative changes." Academically, the university has added numerous new interdisciplinary programs in the past decade, including Social Entrepreneurship, New Century Journalism, Pharmacy and, most recently, the Belmont College of Law which will welcome its first class in 2012. In addition, Fisher worked to secure Belmont as the host site for the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, a historic event broadcast worldwide that also led to Fisher's selection as 2008 Tennessean of the Year and 2010 Nashvillian of the Year. But Dr. Fisher's greatest sense of accomplishment comes not from new campus structures, stronger endowments or an everincreasing student population. Rather, he measures achievement through witnessing education's impact on each individual student. "The student is the focus of all our efforts here at Belmont," Fisher said, "and our top priority is meeting the needs of those students. My life's mission is to help create experiences that transform people, especially students, in ways that enable them to become all they were created to be." Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Fisher was vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas State University for four years and was dean of the School of Business at Henderson State University, his alma mater, for 10 years. Fisher earned a B.S.B.A. from Henderson State, an M.B.A. from the University of Memphis and a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. In addition to his success as both faculty member and higher education administrator, Fisher is also an accomplished author with his most recent work, Life Is a Gift: Inspiration from the Soon Departed, released in 2008. Co-authored with his wife Judy, Life Is a Gift

features a collection of lessons learned from interviews with 104 terminally ill patients of Alive Hospice in Nashville. Dr. Fisher previously co-authored Real Dream Teams: Seven Practices Used by World-Class Team Leaders to Achieve Extraordinary Results, published by St. Lucie Press, with Belmont's Vice President of University Advancement Dr. Bo Thomas. Expressing knowledge gained from his business degrees and management positions, Dr. Fisher has published numerous articles on management and leadership and has consulted with a wide variety of organizations on human resource and strategic planning issues, including Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Alltel, Arkla Gas and the U.S. Department of Transportation, among others. In 1992, Fisher served in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a Fulbright Scholar, conducting research and consulting with the National Institute of Public Administration. He also provided a keynote address at the Arabian Society for Human Resource Management Conference in Bahrain in 1998. Active in his community, Fisher has served in numerous volunteer roles with such organizations as Alignment Nashville, the Nashville Alliance for Public Education and the PENCIL Foundation, all of which support Nashville's public schools. He also is a past chair of the Greater Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Nashville, participates in Nashville's Agenda and is a 2001 graduate of Leadership Nashville. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Southern Financial Partners, a division of Southern Bancorp, Inc., and is a director for Fifth Third Bank, Tennessee Division. In addition, he is or has been a member of the Board of Directors for the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Symphony, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, Music City Coalition, TICUA, Cumberland Region Tomorrow and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Married for 40 years, Dr. Fisher and his wife Judy share in their commitment to Belmont University, where Mrs. Fisher provides support through her role as campus-wide coordinator of interior construction and exterior landscaping/lighting. The Fishers are the proud parents of three grown children and have two wonderful sons-in-law, one wonderful daughter-in-law and six perfect grandsons.

Now entering his 16th year as Director of Athletics, Mike Strickland has led Belmont's Department of Athletics through its infancy stages as a new NCAA Division I program to become one that sees annual success on the field and in the classroom. During his tenure at Belmont, the program has expanded the number of teams it fields, joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, enhanced its facilities, and established a reputation producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. Since arriving in Nashville in 1996, Strickland has overseen the inception of six new sports at Belmont: women's soccer, women's golf and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, the University has built the Frances Bond Davis Tennis Courts and the Whitten Soccer Complex, as well the most recent partnership with Metro Parks for athletic fields at Rose Park. This exciting new venture will house Belmont baseball, softball, soccer, and track & field. Two of the most important achievements of his tenure at Belmont are the acceptance of Belmont into the Atlantic Sun Conference and the opening of the Curb Event Center. During his tenure, Strickland has overseen a program expansion from 11 to 17 teams of competition, spearheaded membership into the Atlantic Sun Conference, spurred athletic facility enhancement and forged a reputation of producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. In 2008, Belmont became the first school in Atlantic Sun Conference history to represent the league in three consecutive NCAA Men's Basketball Championships. Adding conference championships in women's soccer and men’s basketball during the past academic year, Belmont Athletics has won a staggering 28 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships since becoming a member institution in 2001-02. In addition, the school has hosted nine conference championships over the past five years, most recently the 2006 A-Sun Volleyball Championship. Strickland has taken a leadership role in the A-Sun serving as chairman of the tournament committee and presently serves as a member of the conference's membership committee. In addition to the program's success on the field, his tenure has seen the building of the

exquisite Curb Event Center. The $52 million facility, which opened in the fall of 2003, has become the centerpiece of the athletics program. The complex houses a new 5,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball, locker rooms for all sports, a training facility and weight room, as well as administrative offices for the Athletic Department. Off the field, the athletic department has made academic achievement the cornerstone of its definition of success. Belmont has won the Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy seven of the past eight years. The Bruins boasted over twothirds of their student athletes with a gradepoint average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale during the past academic year. Belmont is the only school to win the trophy five straight times (2002-2006). Also of significance, Belmont has earned distinction from the NCAA in each of their Academic Progress Rate (APR) reports. Strickland brings varied years of experience to the program, including nine years as athletics director at Murray State University prior to coming to Belmont. While at Murray State, Strickland served on numerous Ohio Valley Conference committees as well as serving on the NCAA I-AA football advisory committee and the NCAA rifle committee. Prior to serving at Murray State, Strickland was an Associate Athletics Director at Wichita State University from 1983-87, where he was responsible for all business operations for the department. Strickland earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Georgia Southern University and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Georgia. In June of 2009, Strickland received the Under Armour National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division I Southeast Region A.D. of the Year Award. Strickland was honored at the annual NACDA convention in Orlando, Fla. Strickland is married to the former Martha Thomas, an English instructor at Nashville State Community College. The couple has two children: Leanna Elizabeth, a graduate student at the University of Tennessee, and Sara Grace, a Belmont University graduate who is married to Jared Vaughn. In his leisure time, Mike enjoys travel, history, and spending time with his family, especially grandson Jacob.

ACADEMICS
Academic EXCELLENCE For the eighth time in its 10-year conference history, Belmont University has claimed the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Trophy, the league office announced on June 16, 2011. All told, 174 out of 228 in-season Belmont student-athletes earned academic honors, giving the university the greatest percentage of All-Academic honorees at 76.3 percent. That figure represents a new single-year program standard for Belmont University Athletics. Belmont posted a 3.318 grade-point average in the 2011 spring semester – the highest department GPA since Belmont became an NCAA Division I member institution in 1997 and marking the 27th consecutive semester in which the departmental GPA has exceeded 3.0. Last month, four Belmont teams – men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s golf, and women’s soccer – made the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition List, signifying each program ranking in the top 10 percent within their respective sports nationwide for their academic progress rate as determined by the NCAA. In fact, Belmont men’s basketball and men’s soccer have made the list every year since the APR program’s inception in 2006. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic standing each semester by tracking the academic progress of each studentathlete. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. Additionally, the Bruins have a remarkable 68 Atlantic Sun All-Academic honorees over the past five years. Men's soccer players Chris Anderson, Cyrus Eaton, Brett Parker, and Channing Twyner have added Academic All-District accolades to the list of academic honors. One of the Bruins' most accomplished players - two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year and 2008 graduate Jay Ayres - was named a finalist for a coveted NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship before moving on to a career in professional soccer. “We continue to marvel at the vast achievement of our student-athletes,” Belmont University Director of Athletics Mike Strickland said. “Embodying lofty standards in the classroom while also competing for and winning championships on the field of play is something that merits high praise.”
