WHITTEN SOCCER COMPLEX
4
Nestled amidst the shadows of Nashville’s magestic skyline, The Whitten Soccer Complex is one of the finest playing surfaces in the Middle Tennessee area. After serving as the primary international media compound for the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate between Barack Obama and John McCain at Belmont University’s adjacent Curb Event Center, Whitten Soccer Complex returns to its splendor as the Bruins’ home field. In fact, Belmont men’s soccer’s last home match at Whitten was October 28, 2007. Complete with an in-ground sprinkler system and lights, this facility is home to both soccer programs and various intramural activities. The Bermuda grass field sees extensive action while adding much needed “green space” to the campus. Besides the use for varsity soccer and intramural sports, the field is encircled by a lighted walking track intended for use by the entire Belmont community. Bleacher seating for up to 700 spectators is located on the east side of the complex. The men’s soccer team scored a couple of their most impressive victories at home, knocking off the University of Kentucky 2-1 in overtime during the Whitten Soccer Complex’s inaugural season, 1998, and in 2001 shutting out Conference USA member TCU, 1-0, to open their home campaign. 2008 will likely be Whitten’s last stand, as the Bruins transition from the venerable field into their new home facility at Rose Park.

While not readily confused with Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona or Amsterdam as a soccer mecca, Nashville is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the top American cities to host premier events. LP Field, home of the NFL Tennessee Titans, has played host to several marquee international matches. The Music City shined in its debut on April 20, 2004, when the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer played Tecos UAG of the Mexican Primera Division. Later that year, the United States Women’s National Team hosted a friendly against Canada. In 2006, the United States Men’s National Team faced Morocco. Last year, the Americans hosted the 2008 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying at LP Field, with Canada, Guatemala and Honduras taking part. This past April, the United States Men’s National Team defeated Trinidad & Tobago in a World Cup Qualifying Match in Nashville behind three goals from Jozy Altidore. With knowledgeable fans and a top-of-the-line facility, Nashville has cemented its place as a mainstay on the international host site rota.

Earle Davidson Head Coach Belmont soccer has known one coach in the NCAA era: Earle Davidson. Committed to academic achievement and respected in the soccer community, Earle Davidson is entering his 13th season at the helm of the Belmont soccer program. The 2003 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year led Belmont to its most successful campaign of the NCAA and Atlantic Sun era in 2008. Rising to challenges and overcoming adversity, the Bruins went 11-8-2 in reaching the Atlantic Sun Conference Semifinals. All this, despite no true home matches as venerable Whitten Field hosted the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate. Dan Meacock and Will Moorad were named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and Brett Parker earned Academic All-District honors. Davidson’s tenure has also been marked by unrivaled academic achievement. Parker’s Academic All-District nod marked the Bruins’ seventh such honor since 2001, with Marcos Cabrera earning Academic All-America honors in 2001 and 2002. Belmont men’s soccer annually stands atop the Atlantic Sun in Academic All-Conference honorees. Each of the past four years, the Bruins have been recognized by the NCAA in its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) Report - which identifies elite program’s in academic eligibility and retention. 2007 saw the Bruins earn a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. The Bruins notched a signature win at nationally-ranked Furman to end the regular season. Three of Davidson’s players earned all-Atlantic Sun honors (Jay Ayres, Ian Schinelli and T.J. Brown). Ayres was named the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season before embarking on a successful run with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer. He led the Bruins to a 7-9-2 record in the 2006 season, highlighted by four non-conference home wins and three players earning all-Atlantic Sun honors (Jay Ayres, Ian Schinelli, and Eric Susewind). In 2005, the squad saw junior J.P. Rodrigues named Defensive Player of the Year in addition to his placement on the all-conference first team. Sophomore Eric Susewind earned second team honors. The Bruins had a breakout season in 2003 under Davidson's direction. The team improved their win total by four matches, equaling the school record for wins with nine, and qualified for postseason play for the first time since 1995. Behind the prolific goal scoring of two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection Fernando Castellanos, the Bruins went 9-7-1 and finished tied for second in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Belmont drew Stetson in the first round of the A-Sun Championship, but an early injury to Castellanos forced a juggling of the lineup before the team finally fell on penalty kicks. Davidson's commitment to tightening up the defensive end helped spark the team's rejuvenation. Goalkeeper Matt Renfrow along with Carey Alexander and freshmen starters Chris Anderson and J.P. Rodrigues led the team to a school record six shutouts while the team posted their first sub-2.00 GAA since the 1995 campaign. "Our patience has paid off and Earle has the program on the verge of becoming a yearly contender in the Atlantic Sun," stated Director of Athletics Mike Strickland. "The route has not been easy for the men's soccer program, but Earle's enthusiasm and professionalism has been ingrained within the team. Great things are happening and we are excited about 2009." Obviously, much of the success from the last few years can be attributed to the recent recruiting efforts. Castellanos finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in Belmont history and became the first Belmont player to earn All-Atlantic Sun honors. Channing Twyner earned a spot on the 2002 A-Sun All-Freshman team. In 2004, two Bruins were named to the All-Freshman team, a first for Belmont -- Jay Ayres and Robert Fernandez. J.P. Rodrigues, Eric Susewind, Ian Schinelli, Dan Meacock and Will Moorad continued the tradition. During Davidson's tenure, the Bruins have faced some of the very best teams in the nation, but they had never encountered the level of competition seen during the 2000 season. Belmont was accepted as an affiliate member of the Missouri Valley Conference just as the Valley was hitting its competitive stride. The Bruins faced three top-25 teams that season, and nearly half of the conference's 12 teams were ranked at some point while a pair of teams reached the NCAA Final Four. His career at Belmont began in 1995 when he joined Ronnie Littlejohn's staff. Following the 1996 season, the head coaching job came open and Davidson became the third head coach in school history. In Davidson’s first season as Belmont's head coach, he led the team to a 5-11 record that was highlighted by a 2-1 victory over the Memphis Tigers who were at the time ranked in the Top-25 in the nation. Davidson has seen over a dozen former players begin professional soccer careers, several with the local A-League team, the Nashville Metros/Tennessee Rhythm while Chris Van Atta played for an indoor soccer team in Kansas City. Among those players was former assistant coach Ben Fisher, who also played for the Cincinnati Riverhawks. J.P. Rodrigues was drafted #1 overall by the USL Miami FC

COACHING STAFF franchise in 2006.
Born in New York City and growing up in New Jersey, Davidson played his high school soccer at Mendham High School. He graduated in 1985 and decided to come to Nashville and play collegiately at Vanderbilt University. His career at Vanderbilt culminated during his senior season when Davidson received the 1989 McDonald's Award for Outstanding Performance. Following his collegiate playing days, Coach Davidson moved west to Salt Lake City, Utah and joined the Salt Lake Sting of the now defunct American Professional Soccer League (APSL). After playing one season out there, he returned to Nashville to begin a five-year career with the Nashville Metros, at the time a member of the United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL). Following the end of his professional career, Davidson decided to return his passion for the game by joining the coaching ranks. His first opportunity at collegiate level coaching came immediately following his playing days at Vanderbilt when he became the women's team assistant. He served double-duty during the 1990 season when he also assisted the VU men's team. Davidson also became the Director of Coaching for the Nashville Sting Club Teams. In addition to these coaching duties, he has the honor of assisting with Tennessee's Olympic Development Program Teams. Davidson married former Belmont women's soccer assistant coach Alexis Hyrup in May of 2003. The couple welcomed Griffin Hyrup Davidson into the world on April 10, 2009. The family resides in Nashville.

Bryan Johnson Assistant Coach Bryan Johnson returns for his third season as the assistant coach for the men’s soccer team. Aside from his responsibilities in recruiting, scheduling, travel and game planning, Johnson assists in player training and instruction. Last year, Belmont led the A-Sun in corners. Johnson, a native of Franklin, Tennessee, is no stranger to the Belmont program. As a player, Bryan was the first scholarship men’s soccer player at Belmont, after being named All-State during his senior year at Franklin High School. He was the team captain for the Bruins and was named All-Conference twice. He completed his education at Maryville College in 1996 with a degree in History and was a member of the Scots first NCAA Tournament team in 1995. He was also an assistant coach at Belmont from 1996 to 1997. Prior to coming to Belmont, Johnson served as the Head Men’s and Women’s Soccer Coach at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee from 2001 to 2004. During his coaching tenure at Cumberland, Bryan was named TranSouth Conference Men’s Co-Coach of the Year in 2002 and helped lead the Bulldogs to their first ever Top-25 ranking in the school’s soccer history. After leaving Cumberland in 2004, he began working in the private business sector in Nashville. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Coach Johnson also has been a successful coach at the youth level. He has helped to lead four different teams to a total of eight Division 1 State Championships and appearances at the Region III Tournament, including two Regional Semifinals. He has an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coach Association of America (NSCAA). "I am very pleased to have Coach Johnson on our staff,” said Earle Davidson. “Bryan and I have played and coached together on many occasions. He has extensive successful coaching experience and knows how to win. He is a critical thinker who adds an important dimension to our program.”
Eric Susewind Assistant Coach Eric Susewind returns for his second season as an assistant for men’s soccer. Susewind enjoyed a
decorated
playing career at Belmont. A four-year starter and two-year team captain for the Bruins, Susewind earned Second Team All-Atlantic Sun honors in 2005 and 2006. Versatile and skilled, Susewind established himself as one of the top players in the conference at both forward and midfield. He ranks among the program’s career leaders in minutes played, matches played and assists. Susewind earned in bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Belmont in 2007. A native of Houston, Texas, Susewind has coached club soccer in the Nashville area for the past three years, currently directing Tennessee United Soccer Club. Susewind holds a USSF National D license and NSCAA Goalkeeper Regional and State license.

Earle Davidson (Vanderbilt, 1989) Bryan Johnson (Maryville, 1996) Eric Susewind (Belmont, 2007) Tim Lee (Cedarville, 1994)
SEASON PREVIEW OVERVIEW On the heels of the winningest season in program history and a trip to the Atlantic Sun ‘Final Four,’ one could argue expectations are at an all-time high for Belmont Men’s Soccer in 2009. With a nice mix of returning players and an infusion talent via promising newcomers, the Bruins have all the makings of a winning program and championship contender. Moreover, with the welcomed return to venerable on-campus facility Whitten Soccer Complex after a 2008 home campaign as veritable vagabonds in and around the historic Presidential Town Hall Debate, Belmont gains peace of mind. All told, from top to bottom this could be head coach Earle Davidson’s deepest and most talented group ever. “We have a talented and interesting mix this year,” Davidson said. “While we are heavy with youth, we have a group of influential upperclassmen. The sophomore slump is always a risk, but we are confident that we have a very motivated sophomore class who are hungry for success. We expect to improve upon last year's strong performance. We have talent, we have leadership, and we have a group that believes in earning success. Additionally, we have depth. Everyone will have to earn their spot all over again. There is no room for complacency at the Division I level. We played a lot of freshmen last year, and they played because they earned it. The guys who are on the field for us this fall will have likewise earned it. We are confident in our roster and we are confident that we will be challenging for honors in the fall. YEAR IN REVIEW Belmont Men’s Soccer took a significant step forward in 2008, distinguishing itself in both non-conference and conference play. The season opened with a bang, as victories over always-capable Winthrop and Gardner-Webb helped the Bruins claim the host Bulldogs’ kickoff tournament. In fact, netminder Ron Gravely earned national honors for his work that opening weekend. Key nonconference victories over Centenary, Presbyterian and Wofford later followed as the Bruins took plenty of positive momentum into league play. Belmont proceeded to go unbeaten in its first four conference matches for the first time since joining the Atlantic Sun in 2001. Big wins over USC Upstate, East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast and eventual league champion Jacksonville placed the Bruins in prime position for a postseason run. All the while, Belmont’s youth was served, as freshmen standouts Dan Meacock, Will Moorad, Austin Embry, Edgardo Padilla and Alex Davis made eye-opening contributions match after match. A convincing victory over SIU-Edwardsville on Senior Day was a fitting way to cap the regular season careers of mainstays like Cyrus Eaton, Mete Ozkan, Bo Konigsmark and Robert Fernandez. But what followed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament would rank among the alltime greatest victories in program history. Facing longtime rival Stetson in the quarterfinals, the Bruins would fall behind 2-0 early into the second half. A Dan Meacock goal in the 59th minute cut the deficit in half before the Hatters answered 35 seconds later. Undeterred, Meacock scored in second goal of the half to get Belmont within 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining. Then in the 88th minute, Brett Parker found the back of the net and forced overtime at 3-3. Then in the 106th minute, Moorad drew a foul in the penalty box. Wade Wonderlin’s PK gave the Bruins a dramatic 4-3 victory and first-ever berth in the conference semifinals. A difficult loss to nationally-ranked and host Campbell one night later could not sour a remarkable 11 win season. The stage had been set for 2009.
10
FORWARDS So much about soccer, especially at the highest levels, is about capatilizing on opportunities. When chances are created, you need finishers. And Belmont boasts some of the best it has ever had. It all starts with sophomore Dan Meacock. The Sarasota, Fla. native delivered time and again in 2008, leading the Bruins and ranking among the league leaders with 10 goals. His 22-point freshman campaign ranks among the all-time best in program history and served as a wonderful appetizer for 2009 and beyond. Dangerous inside and outside the box, in the air and with the ball at his feet, Meacock will be a marked man. Junior Brett Parker brings a physical presence up top. Strong on the ball and able to relieve pressure from the back end, Parker also is able to find the back of the net. His five goals in 2008 include a game-winner against Presbyterian and the all-important game-tying goal against Stetson in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. He will be a vital piece of the puzzle this season. Sophomore Will Moorad possesses tremendous individual skills and those were on full display from day one last year. Much was asked of Moorad as a freshman in regards to playmaking and creating scoring chances, and he did not disappoint. With 19 points on seven goal and a team-high five assists, Moorad was as valuable as any Bruin last season. the sky is the limit for Moorad as Coach Davidson seeks more opportunities to get him near goal with space. A quartet of freshmen will add depth to the Belmont forward rotation. Brandon Tarr, a transfer from the University of South Carolina, would classify as the most decorated of the bunch given his standout prep career and SEC credentials. But how Tarr recovers from injury and regains his fitness and timing is still unclear. Ian Anthony, Cullen Hall and Sam Miller all have the coaching staff excited and should compete for playing time. MIDFIELDERS Despite losing proven players Cyrus Eaton and Mete Ozkan to graduation, Belmont returns a bevy of highly capable and experienced midfielders. Like Moorad, Wade Wonderlin is the embodiment of playmaker: quick feet, natural feel and touch for the game, and great vision. Wonderlin was among the team leaders in minutes played and scoring in 2008 and his role should only expand this year as senior captain. It would not be a stretch to see Wonderlin play up top in special situations. Edgardo Padilla was one of six Bruins in 2008 to see action in all 21 matches. The Lone Star State native is tough, fearless and great at connecting play. Fourth on the team in scoring as a freshman, it would not be crazy to think Padilla could challenge for the team lead in assists this season. One of Belmont’s five returning seniors, Justin Hay has seen it all as a Bruin and is eager to conclude his career on a winning note. With 3700 career minutes played and 10 career points, Hay’s leadership and savvy will be called upon regularly. Fellow senior Cameron Eades could be a main benefactor of Eaton and Ozkan’s departures. A transfer from Carson-Newman, Eades played in eight matches in 2008, but will be in the midfielder mix this year. Sophomore Tomi Homonnay will also challenge for playing time. Among the four newcomers at midfield is Jeff Phillips. A sophomore transfer from Eastern Illinois, Phillips was a major cog for the Panthers in the Ohio Valley Conference. Moreover, as the latest in a long line of Bruins from Texas, Phillips should make a seamless transition.
SEASON PREVIEW Freshmen Eric Bowen, McAllister Green and Alex Tummons will provide instant depth and, with a productive camp, could work themselves into the rotation. DEFENDERS While the Bruins showcase great strength in numbers at forward and midfield, defender may be the team’s most fortified position entering camp. Two year letterwinner T.J. Brown returns to man one of Belmont’s two outside back positions. Brown, a tough, physical defender who has played in every match since his arrival, gives the Bruins an all-conference level performer at back. As one of the elderstatesmen, Justin Ferguson will assume a larger role in practice and in games. Following an accomplished summer stint for PDL Springfield, expect Ferguson to see minutes at back and midfield. His leadership and dedication will be paramount to the Bruins’ success. A quartet of seasoned sophomores join Brown in the backline. Austin Embry started all 21 matches as a freshman to establish a new program standard. But given his ability to win balls in the air, look for Davidson to push Embry up forward on occasion. Like Embry, Alex Davis logged huge minutes as a freshman, and those experiences should serve him well in 2009. Davis should embrace a larger leadership role and also be pushed into the offensive half. Danny Rayburn is a local product who gives the Bruins options at back and midfield. He made his first collegiate start against Lipscomb a year ago. Emerick Witkowski made five early season starts in 2008 before having his season cut short. But with a redshirt year in tow, the imposing 6-5 Witkowski gives Belmont desired size and toughness in the box. Chris Dempski has given the team quality production off the bench in his first two years. Coach Davidson has expressed high hopes for Dempski this season. Freshmen Justin Crawley, Chris Hrovat and Bradley Shuck will also vie for minutes immediately. GOALKEEPERS Coach Davidson will have three solid options to choose from to protect the Belmont net. Janrai Gravely ranks among the program’s all-time leaders in minutes played, saves and goal against average. Gravely has 14 career victories and knows the Atlantic Sun Conference well. Couple that experience with tremendous size and wingspan, and Gravely has all the tools to keep opponents off the scoreboard. Wesley Wray shared time with Gravely in 2008 and will have every opportunity to earn the starting nod this season. After some sparking play a year ago, which led to a 4-1-2 mark and a 0.81 goals against average, Wray earned the trust of his teammates and coaches through stellar play. Active and athletic, Wray has great fundamentals and instincts for a goalkeeper. Adding to the mix and intrigue of the goalkeeper position battle is freshman Lou Manning. A highly-regarded netminder, Manning is once again teammates of Austin Embry and Edgardo Padilla; all three were standouts at Carroll Senior High in Southlake, Texas. The District 6-5A Goalkeeper of the Year, Manning has the size and athleticism to play small forward for Coach Byrd and the Bruin Basketball team. By all accounts, Manning’s height and confidence project well to the college game. SCHEDULE Traditionally, Coach Davidson uses the non-conference as preparation for Atlantic Sun Conference play. This season is no exception as the Bruins confront stern tests throughout. Belmont hosts a Labor Day Weekend Tournament, welcoming Marshall and Oral Roberts to Whitten Field. The first major road trip will take the Bruins to the Rocky Mountains for dates with perennial powers Air Force and Denver. From there, four more matches with familiar non-conference foes Alabama A&M, UNC-Asheville, Wofford and Furman round out the early season slate. The Atlantic Sun sports four other teams ranked in the 2008 South Region Poll, including Jacksonville,
11
Campbell, Lipscomb and North Florida. “The A-Sun is a conference of great parity,” Davidson said recently. “Every year it comes down to the last weekend of regular season play to see who is the top seed and who is the bottom seed. Rarely, is anyone assured of a spot going into the last weekend. This makes for a highly entertaining and competitive conference schedule. The A-Sun has grown considerably in influence over the last few years. The quality is there and growing with each season. Last year's conference tournament champion won their first round NCAA match and fell in a close 1-0 loss second round match to eventual NCAA tournament champ North Carolina. Additionally, we beat both teams on our schedule that made the NCAA Tournament.”

BELMONT UNIVERSITY
44
ACADEMICS AND MORE Belmont's boundaries continue to extend beyond the Nashville campus through its Cool Springs campus south of Nashville and organized programs such as the Washington Center program and music business' Belmont West in Los Angeles and Belmont East in New York City. Study-abroad programs place students in China, Costa Rica, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, South Africa and Spain. Belmont also serves as a regional center of the EastWest Center for the Development of Asian Studies. Vital to the Belmont student experience are service learning, volunteerism and mission projects that invest in surrounding communities. Through the efforts of students and faculty, Belmont has touched lives in Nashville's charitable organizations, its growing Hispanic community, area tutoring programs, neighboring businesses and mentoring programs, as well as inner-city and overseas mission projects, including trips to the Appalachian Mountains and the Ukraine. HISTORY AND HONORS In the mid-1800s, the campus was known as Adelicia Acklen's Belle Monte estate. The antebellum mansion remains today, flanked by university buildings separated in age by a century. The first educational institution on the estate was the original Belmont College (1890-1913), offering elementary school through junior college education to young ladies. The school merged with Ward Seminary to become the prestigious Ward-Belmont School for Women (1913-1951) and in 1951 became the coed Belmont College. In 1991, the college became Belmont University and, this year, began the 115th year of higher education on this site. Belmont continually reflects its rich heritage as it excels in the academic area. Last year, U.S. News & World Report named Belmont University in the top 15 of the best colleges and universities in the South in the magazine's "master's" category. VISION Belmont's vision is to be a premier teaching university bringing together the best of liberal arts and professional education in a Christian community of learning and service. Belmont strives to enable men and women from diverse backgrounds to engage and transform the world with disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage and faith. Believing that every student is created for a purpose in life, Belmont encourages students to explore their passions and develop their talents to meet the world's needs.
Among its student body of just over 5,000, are students from every state and more than 29 countries. In addition to seven baccalaureate degrees in over 75 areas of study, Belmont offers master's degrees in Business Administration, Accountancy, English, Education (including Sport Administration), Music, Nursing and Occupational Therapy, and doctorates in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. Under the leadership of President Robert Fisher, Belmont celebrates more than a century of academic heritage. Perhaps most notably, Belmont stood out in the latest annual ranking of America’s best colleges and universities in U.S. News & World Report, labeled as "Best Colleges 2009 - Up-and-coming Masters Universities (South)" and a most cited "School to Watch". BU is now ranked 11th in the South in the “Best Universities – Masters” category. Also noteworthy, Belmont has earned the Atlantic Sun Academic Champion Trophy seven of the last eight years - with over two-thirds of its student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in 2007-08. Moreover, Belmont has opened several impressive new facilities on campus which have enhanced the learning environment: the Massey Performing Arts Center, the Curb Event Center, and the newlyunveiled Gordon E. Inman Center. Then came word Belmont would host the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate, further exposing the school to a global audience. In short, Belmont has experienced remarkable growth and achievement - increases in average ACT scores, innovative program development, impressive campus expansion, land and facility development and establishing itself as a national leader in quality improvement.
UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION
45
Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves as President of Belmont University, a position he has held since April 2000. During his tenure the university’s enrollment has risen by nearly 70 percent while the campus itself has expanded significantly with the additions of the Curb Event Center and Beaman Student Life Center, the Gordon E. Inman Center, the Troutt Theater complex and several new residence halls and parking garages. In addition, he worked to secure Belmont as the host site for the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, a historic event broadcast worldwide that also led to Fisher’s selection as 2008 Tennessean of the Year.
DR. ROBERT FISHER
President
But Dr. Fisher’s greatest sense of accomplishment comes not from new campus structures, stronger endowments or a larger student body. Rather, he measures achievement through witnessing education’s impact on each individual student. “The student is the focus of all our efforts here at Belmont,” Fisher said, “and our top priority is meeting the needs of those students. My life's mission is to help create experiences that transform people, especially students, in ways that enable them to become all they were created to be.” Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Fisher was vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas State University for four years and was dean of the School of Business at Henderson State University, his alma mater, for 10 years. Fisher earned a B.S.B.A. from Henderson State, an M.B.A. from the University of Memphis and a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. In addition to his success as both faculty member and higher education administrator, Fisher is also an accomplished author with his most recent work, Life Is a Gift: Inspiration from the Soon Departed, released in 2008. Co-authored with his wife Judy, Life Is a Gift features a collection of lessons learned from interviews with 104 terminally ill patients of Alive Hospice in Nashville. Dr. Fisher previously co-authored Real Dream Teams: Seven Practices Used by WorldClass Team Leaders to Achieve Extraordinary Results, published by St. Lucie Press, with Belmont’s Vice President of University Advancement Dr. Bo Thomas. Expressing knowledge gained from his business degrees and management positions, Dr. Fisher has published numerous articles on management and leadership and has consulted with a wide variety of organizations on human resource and strategic planning issues, including Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Alltel, Arkla Gas and the U.S. Department of Transportation, among others. In 1992, Fisher served in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a Fulbright Scholar, conducting research and consulting with the National Institute of Public Administration. He also provided a keynote address at the Arabian Society for Human Resource Management Conference in Bahrain in 1998. Active in his community, Fisher has served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Nashville Area Chamber ofCommerce, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, the Country Music Foundation, the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Symphony, the PENCIL Foundation, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Alliance for Public Education, TICUA, Cumberland Region Tomorrow, Fifth Third Bank and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Nashville, participates in Nashville’s Agenda, and is a 2001 graduate of Leadership Nashville. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Arkansas Enterprise Group, a division of Southern Development Bank. Married for 38 years, Dr. Fisher and his wife Judy share in their commitment to Belmont University, where Mrs. Fisher provides support through her role as campus-wide coordinator of interior construction and exterior landscaping/lighting. The Fishers are the proud parents of three grown children and have two wonderful sons-in-law and four perfect grandsons.
MIKE STRICKLAND Director of Athletics
Now entering his 14th year as Director of Athletics, Mike Strickland has led Belmont's Department of Athletics through its infancy stages as a new NCAA Division I program to become one that sees annual success on the field and in the classroom. During his tenure at Belmont, the program has expanded the number of teams it fields, joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, enhanced its facilities, and established a reputation producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes.
Since arriving in Nashville in 1996, Strickland has overseen the inception of six new sports at Belmont: women's soccer, women's golf and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, the University has built the Frances Bond Davis Tennis Courts and the Whitten Soccer Complex, as well the most recent partnership with Metro Parks for athletic fields at Rose Park. This exciting new venture will house Belmont baseball, softball, soccer, and track & field. Two of the most important achievements of his tenure at Belmont are the acceptance of Belmont into the Atlantic Sun Conference and the opening of the Curb Event Center. During his tenure, Strickland has overseen a program expansion from 11 to 17 teams of competition, spearheaded membership into the Atlantic Sun Conference, spurred athletic facility enhancement and forged a reputation of producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. In 2008, Belmont became the first school in Atlantic Sun Conference history to represent the league in three consecutive NCAA Men's Basketball Championships. Adding conference championships in women's cross country, women's soccer and volleyball during the past academic year, Belmont Athletics has won a staggering 26 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships since becoming a member institution in 2001-02 - far and away the league standard. In addition, the school has hosted nine conference championships over the past five years, most recently the 2006 A-Sun Volleyball Championship. Strickland has taken a leadership role in the A-Sun serving as chairman of the tournament committee and presently serves as a member of the conference's membership committee. In addition to the program's success on the field, his tenure has seen the building of the exquisite Curb Event Center. The $52 million facility, which opened in the fall of 2003, has become the centerpiece of the athletics program. The complex houses a new 5,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball, locker rooms for all sports, a training facility and weight room, as well as administrative offices for the Athletic Department. Off the field, the athletic department has made academic achievement the cornerstone of its definition of success. Belmont has won the Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy seven of the past eight years. The Bruins boasted over two-thirds of their student athletes with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale during the past academic year. Belmont is the only school to win the trophy five straight times (2002-2006). Also of significance, Belmont has earned distinction from the NCAA in each of their Academic Progress Rate (APR) reports. Strickland brings varied years of experience to the program, including nine years as athletics director at Murray State University prior to coming to Belmont. While at Murray State, Strickland served on numerous Ohio Valley Conference committees as well as serving on the NCAA I-AA football advisory committee and the NCAA rifle committee. Prior to serving at Murray State, Strickland was an Associate Athletics Director at Wichita State University from 1983-87, where he was responsible for all business operations for the department. Strickland earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Georgia Southern University and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Georgia. In June of 2009, Strickland received the Under Armour National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division I Southeast Region A.D. of the Year Award. Strickland was honored at the annual NACDA convention in Orlando, Fla. Strickland is married to the former Martha Thomas, an English instructor at Nashville State Community College. The couple has two children: Leanna Elizabeth, an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee, and Sara Grace, a Belmont University graduate who is married to Jared Vaughn. In 2008, Mike and Martha celebrated two milestone events: their 35th wedding anniversary and the arrival of their first grandson, Jacob. In his leisure time, Mike enjoys travel, history, and spending time with his family.

ACADEMICS Academics is one of the cornerstones of Belmont University's Department of Athletics. Since the move to Division I in 1997, Belmont student-athletes have excelled in the classroom bringing great recognition to individuals, specific teams, the department as a whole and the entire university. The Bruin men's soccer program has long been a national model of academic success. One of just 11 programs in the country to receive APR honor roll status each of the past four years, the team has had a staggering 59 Atlantic Sun All-Academic honorees over the past four years. In addition, studentathletes Chris Anderson, Cyrus Eaton, Brett Parker, and Channing Twyner have earned Academic All-District awards. One of the Bruins' most accomplished players - two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year and 2008 graduate Jay Ayres - was named finalist for a coveted NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship before moving on to a career in Major League Soccer. ALL-A ACADEMIC TROPHY Since joining the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2001-02, Belmont University has enjoyed unparalleled success in regards to the league’s All-Academic Trophy. Belmont University won the award seven times, including each of its first five years in the conference, 2002-2006. No other university in the history of the Atlantic Sun has earned this honor five years in a row. In 2009, over two-thirds of Belmont's student-athletes received A-Sun Academic All-Conference honors during the academic year. GPA TRADITION CONTINUES Belmont University's Department of Athletics posted a 3.231 GPA in the Spring of 2009, marking the 23rd consecutive semester in which the departmental GPA has exceeded a 3.00. NASHVILLE - ‘MUSIC CITY, U.S.A.’
Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and the entertainment, cultural, and commercial center of the Mid-South. With a metropolitan population more than 1.5 million, Nashville is one of the fastest growing markets in the country. In the past decade alone, the population of the Nashville area has grown by nearly 30 percent. ‘The Music City’ can best be described as a pleasant mix of big city entertainment and "down home" friendliness. Nashville is located in the heart of our nation’s bustling core. Major cities such as St. Louis, Cincinnati, Memphis, Atlanta, and Birmingham can all be reached by car within 3-5 hours. And when going from work to play, Nashville has it all. The city offers a multitude of sporting events, recreational opportunities, restaurants, parks, and shopping malls. The sports landscape in Nashville has changed dramatically over the past decade with the introduction of major professional sports into the area. The arrival of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans in 1998 brought instant credibility and excitement to the Mid-State. The Titans have won two division titles and one conference championship under longtime Head Coach Jeff Fisher. Tennessee represented the AFC in Super Bowl XXXIV, playing the St. Louis Rams in one of the most memorable games in NFL history. With star in the making running back Chris Johnson and on the heels of the AFC’s best mark in 2008, the future looks bright for the powder blue and white. Home for the Titans is LP Field, a 68,000 seat, state-ofthe-art facility located on the east bank of the Cumberland River across from downtown. Aside from the NFL, LP Field also plays host to several major concerts and international sporting events. Not to be outdone, the Nashville Predators have introduced the thrills of the National Hockey League to Middle Tennessee. In 2008, the Predators advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a fourth consecutive season. The Preds skate in one of Nashville’s downtown landmarks, the Sommet Center. The 18,000 seat Sommet Center is a regular venue for touring groups. Another constant among Nashville professional sports over the past two decades has been the Nashville Sounds. The Sounds, who have called Music City home since 1978, compete in the Pacific Coast League as the Class AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. In recent years, players like Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Yovani Gallardo, and Ricky Weeks have called Nashville home. The 2006 PCL Champion Sounds play at Greer Stadium, located just minutes from downtown and the longtime home of Belmont Baseball. The Nashville Superspeedway has become the area's top racing venue, hosting NASCAR and IRL events for the past seven summers.

Furthermore, Nashville has established itself as the ideal place to host a major sporting event. In the past decade alone, the city has hosted events such as the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournament, the SEC men's and women's basketball tournaments, numerous AAU national championships, and the U.S. Swimming Championships. Recently, Nashville was awarded the 2014 NCAA Women’s Final Four. Each year, Nashville hosts the highly-popular Country Music Marathon and the Music City Bowl - which now pits teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conferences each December at LP Field. Recreation is second-to-none in Nashville. Located in the picturesque hills of Middle Tennessee, Nashville boasts thousands of acres of public parks and offers a variety of outdoor activities like golf, boating, fishing, and hiking. Known as "Music City USA", Nashville is a city whose musical tastes range from country to rock to gospel. The city has several major concert venues and many big-name concert tours consider Nashville a “must-stop.” The city also serves as home to the Grand Ole Opry, the nation's longest running weekly radio show, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Nashville has long been the mecca of the country music industry and is one of the top recording centers in the world. All of the music industry's major recording labels have a presence in Music Row, just north of the Belmont campus. The nightlife in downtown Nashville offers something for everyone. Admist the savory sights and sounds of historic Second Avenue sit some of the most venerable hot spots anywhere. From Wildhorse Saloon and Hard Rock Cafe to Famous Dave’s BBQ and The Pancake Pantry, it is not uncommon to bump into stars of stage and screen in Nashville. Nashville's cultural environment earned the city its other nickname, the "Athens of the South." Nashville is well known as a major education center. The area's 10 accredited four-year and postgraduate institutions, including Belmont, are an integral part of the economic and cultural identity of the area. In addition to its educational institutions, the city offers numerous cultural and artistic venues. It is home to nine performing arts facilities, including the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. TPAC is the home to a wide range of events, including Broadway musicals and performances by the Nashville Ballet, Nashville Opera, and the Nashville Symphony. The city is also home to seven art galleries, including the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The Frist Center, housed in the city's old main post office, presents a wide assortment of visual arts exhibitions. Nashville boasts 25 museums (including the Tennessee State Museum), numerous historic sites (like The Hermitage - home of President Andrew Jackson, an exact replica of the Parthenon, and the Natchez Trace Parkway), and an upgraded public library system that includes a new $50 million downtown library. Lastly, Nashville is the cornerstone of the Mid-South economy. It has become a leader in printing and publishing, music and entertainment, finance and insurance, healthcare management, automobile and other related industry, manufacturing and tourism. Internationally known companies like Bridgestone/Firestone, Catepillar Financial, Dell, Dollar General, HCA, Nissan, and Saturn have significant operations in the city. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Continuing a tradition of academic achievement, more than 57 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2008-09 academic year. Fifteen student-athletes earned places on the 2008-09 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Teams. Belmont led the impressive institutional totals in the race for the All-Academic Trophy for the seventh time in eight years with 66.5 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better. Belmont senior Andy Wicke, Jacksonville senior Jeremy Gillan, Lipscomb junior Kellie Sirus and Campbell senior Karlie Love earned spots on CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America teams. Lipscomb’s men and women track and field teams and the women’s cross country team ranked among the top 10 GPAs in NCAA Division I, in being recognized as All-Academic Scholar Teams from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Belmont men’s cross country team posted the fifth-highest GPA, according to the USTFCCCA. Wicke, one of the Bruins’ most celebrated student-athletes, shared the conference’s male Scholar Athlete of the Year award and earned the conference’s Postgraduate Scholarship. Mercer’s Chereese Rowe earned the conference’s second Postgraduate Scholarship. Wicke earned national acclaim as he became one of just two men’s basketball players to receive an educational grant through the NCAA postgraduate scholarship program. For his dedicated academic success and community service, Wicke landed on the Lowe’s All-Senior All-America Second Team and was one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award. ATHLETIC SUCCESS For the second straight season, the A-Sun made early headlines on the hardwood as Mercer, under new head coach Bob Hoffman, went on the road and defeated Alabama and Auburn within a four-day span, shooting the Bears up to the top spot in the RPI. At the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Championship, ETSU ended Belmont’s three-year reign, winning its first A-Sun Tournament title and making the NCAA field for the eighth time. During the Championship, Courtney Pigram became just the second player in league history to reach the 2000point plateau. Two players could reach that mark this season in Mercer’s James Florence and Campbell’s Jonathan Rodriguez. Florence and Campbell begin the season as the second- and third-highest active scorers in the nation.
During the baseball season, three A-Sun hurlers, Lipscomb’s Rex Brothers and Kennesaw State’s duo of Chad Jenkins and Kyle Heckathorn moved up the draft boards of Major League teams with every dominating performance. Brothers turned in one of the league’s top single-season strikeout performances; Jenkins posted a 41-inning scoreless streak and Heckathorn capped his season with a dominating 15-strikeout performance against UNF, earning National Player of the Week honors. On draft night, Jenkins became just the seventh A-Sun player to be a first-round selection, going to the Blue Jays. In the supplemental phase of the first round, the Rockies picked Rex Brothers and the Brewers tabbed Heckathorn. In softball, the conference turned in one of its finest seasons in history, especially during the non-conference season. Against out-of-conference opposition, A-Sun schools posted a .602 win percentage, the fifth-highest in the nation, trailing only the SEC, Pac-10, ACC and Big 12. Five schools finished with win percentages better than .600 and FGCU and Mercer reached the 40-win mark. The Eagles established a league record for win percentage at .839 in posting a 47-9 record. For the second-consecutive May, Campbell emerged victorious at the A-Sun Championship, led by the dominating performance of MVP Brittany Stanley. She pitched all 31 innings, recorded two shutouts and struck out 26 against only two walks. One of the most dominating athletes in Atlantic Sun history closed out her career in Jacksonville’s Natasha Harvey. She led the Dolphins team titles in both Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field for a fourth-straight year and won the inaugural MVP honors at both meets as well as the Most Outstanding Field Performer award. During her four years, she won a combined 18 individual events, five Most Outstanding Performer awards, both Most Outstanding Freshman performers in addition to the two MVP honors. Off the track, she won the A-Sun’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award, was the A-Sun’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award and appeared on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic team for a fourth-straight year. The 2009-10 athletic year promises to be an exciting one for the Atlantic Sun as UNF and Kennesaw State earned full Division-I status and will be eligible for all postseason tournaments. FGCU’s champion volleyball and baseball programs and USC Upstate’s soccer and softball programs have also gained access to A-Sun and NCAA postseason play. For the first time in league history, Mercer and it’s University Center will play host to the General Shale Brick Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. The Baseball Championship leaves Florida for the first time in 16 years for Nashville, Tenn. and Lipscomb’s Dugan Field. FGCU landed its first championship, and will host volleyball in November. These new additions and venues make the upcoming year a hotly anticipated season for the Atlantic Sun.
