2008 Atlantic Sun Champions
DEANE WEBB Head Coach
Since arriving as Belmont's third volleyball head coach in 2003, Deane Webb has transformed Belmont into an Atlantic Sun powerhouse that consistently competes for championships. One of the most dedicated and accomplished young coaches in the country, Webb will complete his sixth season as head coach during the NCAA Tournament. During Webb's tenure, the Bruin program has simply redefined itself; enjoying marked improvement across the board. From facilities to recruiting; from academics to on-court performance, Webb has laid the groundwork for a winning tradition for years to come. The Bruins 25 wins in 2008 marks the fifth consecutive 20 win campaign enroute to Belmont’s second A-Sun title and NCAA tournament berth in three years. It is just the fourth time in conference history -- first among current members -- that a program has achieved such a consistent winning mark. Webb saw a record of five players earn All-Conference postseason honors with Cat Mundy on the first team and Channing Salava receiving Freshman of the Year honors. Emily Cahill, Jenny Gray and Salava represented the Bruins on the second team; while Maggie Johnson and Salava were listed on the all-freshman team. In 2007, the Bruins recorded a 20-8 mark en route to the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference Volleyball Tournament. Webb saw four players earn all-conference honors: setter Colleen Nilson, middle hitter Jaye Schuler, outside hitter Cat Mundy, and middle hitter Emily Cahill. Nilson was a four-time First Team All-Atlantic Sun honoree; believed to be the first such student-athlete in Belmont University history. Webb also oversaw tournament titles at Middle Tennessee State and Marquette. Dedicated to playing a highly competitive non-conference schedule, Webb orchestrated another Top 100 RPI season. In six years Webb has transformed the Bruins' roster into one of the most consistently talented lineup in the Atlantic Sun. Belmont boasts a young, promising roster due largely in part to his recruiting diligence and keen eye for talent. Webb has secured commitments from several top club players from around the nation over the past three seasons. Since joining Belmont's staff, Webb has become a voting member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) weekly Top-25 poll and a member of the AVCA's head coaches committee.

MOLTEN/NIKE TCU INVITATIONAL FORT WORTH, Texas - On Friday the volleyball team began their 2008 campaign by dismantling UMKC in three sets to kickoff the TCU Tournament. Led by Kayla Albritton's career high 12 kills the Bruins defeated the Kangaroos 25-23, 25-21 and 25-17. The first set was closely contested until UMKC went on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 14-9 lead. With a key block from Jenny Gray and a service ace from Albritton the Bruins were within striking distance but soon fell to a 19-14 deficit. Down in the newly-shorted sets to 25, Head Coach Deane Webb took a timeout to regroup his players. The Bruins wasted no time recovering by going on a six-to-one run to tie the score at 20. Albritton helped Belmont take a one-set lead by recording three kills in the last five points to edge the `Roos, 25-23. Set two was neck-and-neck for most of the way until both teams were tied at 20 going down the stretch. Belmont began to breakaway with a service ace from Ablbritton and a kill from Gray, allowing hometown hero Cat Mundy to give Belmont a two-set lead with a commanding kill. The Bruins played with certainty in the third and final set. Belmont outscored UMKC 25-17 to win their first match of the season, despite giving up 10 attacking errors to the Kangaroos. By the end of the match Belmont registered 38 kills, seven service aces and eight total blocks. Albritton finished with a careerhigh of 12 kills and also tied a career-high mark with 34 attacks. Gray, the lone junior on this year's squad, turned in an impressive eight kills with a .615 hitting percentage. Johnson provided a solid performance in her first match as a Bruin by recording six kills and 11 digs. Likewise, Salava turned in a strong effort for her team as she assisted on 30 kills and led the team in digs with 12. ABBREVIATED MATCH STATS BU

FORT WORTH, Texas - Belmont volleyball won their second match in the TCU Tournament by defeating Louisiana Tech in four sets Saturday morning. Cat Mundy performed well in front of a home crowd as she led the Bruins in kills (15) over Louisiana Tech's towering front line defenders. After a career match yesterday agaist UMKC sophomore outside hitter Kayla Albritton didn't wait long to rewrite her career-high in kills, recording 13 with a .321 hitting percentage. Albritton and Mundy also added three service aces each. Jenny Gray and Channing Salava both provided 7 kills to help the Bruins remain perfect in the young season.
FORT WORTH, Texas - Belmont volleyball concluded TCU Tournament play with a loss to host TCU in four sets. Megan Clements and Kayla Albritton both represented Belmont on the All-Tournament team. After beating Louisiana Tech and UMKC to begin the tournament, Belmont started where they left off by staying within striking distance to the Horned Frogs in the first two sets of the match. The Bruins were up early in the second set 9-2 with six-consecutive services from Jenny Gray and were able to fend off the Horned Frogs slow comeback by winning the set 25-22. At the break Mundy went in with 12 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. The last two sets of the match saw TCU win convincingly by 13 and 12 points, respectively. Belmont's 12 points are the lowest number for a Bruin team to score in a regular set since the first match last season against UAB, which saw Belmont lose in three sets. The Bruins have played TCU twice in the program's history, coming out with a loss both times. Despite the tough loss this young team can look ahead and take some positive lessons from Fort Worth. Megan Clements proved to be a consistent backbone for the Bruins at the libero position while earning a spot on the AllTournament Team. Clements finished with 23 digs, four service aces as she started every match for the Bruins. Albritton finished the tournament with 34 kills while setting a career match-high record twice, recording 12 against UMKC and 13 over Louisiana Tech this morning. The native of Gainesville, Fla., led the team in service aces by tallying five. Mundy led the team in kills during the weekend with 37 in three matches (3.36 per set) in front of a home audience.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In front of their first home crowd of the season Belmont's volleyball team dominated the Purple Aces of Evansville in three sets (25-22, 25-18, 2520). In the first set the Bruins came out roaring to a 5-to-1 run with a trio of kills from Cat Mundy (Dallas, Texas). The Bruins scored the first point on a kill from Mundy and did not give up the lead for the remainder of the match. Belmont held Evansville to just a .080 hitting percentage during set two - meanwhile, the Bruins pounded home a .367 hitting accuracy. Kayla Albritton (Gainesville, Fla.) took the Purple Aces' breath away with an ace of her own to end the set (25-18). By the end of the night Belmont recorded eight aces, compared to the Purple Aces' single ace. Set three started off as one of the most dominating performances of the season, as the Bruins took an early 16-to-3 advantage. In that stretch Channing Salava (Clearwater, Fla.) had five-straight services with two aces, along with Megan Clement's (Indianapolis, Ind.) seven-straight services and a pair of aces. Eventually, Evansville reduced their 13-point deficit to just two points at 19-to-17. At that point the Bruins slowly closed the door with key kills from Jenny Gray (Greenwood, Ind.) and Mundy to take the 25-20 victory, improving to 3-1 on the season. The Bruins also recorded a seasonhigh .248 hitting percentage while holding Evansville to just a .095 hitting percentage. Belmont's defense was so effective, in-part, due to a season-high five team blocks, led by Gray's three block-assists and sophomore Tara Blood's (Boise, Idaho) two blockassists. "I thought it was good that Tara got a chance to get in there and get some meaningful, important playing time," Coach Webb said. "Her getting two blocks in two games was a good showing for her. As she gets more comfortable offensively she will find ways to contribute." ABBREVIATED MATCH STATS Belmont E’ville

BELMONT INVITATIONAL
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In the first day of the Belmont Tournament the Bruins lost to Murray State in four sets (25-19, 22-25, 2628, 14-25). Losing at home has become a rarity for the Bruins in recent years as it becomes only the second loss in two years while playing in the Curb Event Center. The last time Belmont was defeated at home was October 5, 2007 against Florida Gulf Coast, ending an eight-game home winning streak. In Belmont's three matches against Murray State, all have been at home and all have been in the loss column. "They were mentally strong, at least tonight, and we were not," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "We started off very aggressively and made some mistakes and as the match went on we became more and more tentative. That was the big difference tonight - not physical but a mental difference on two sides of the net." The Bruins showed their aggressiveness on offense, recording a season-high of 159 attack attempts. Cat Mundy led the Bruins in kills with 15. Sophomore Carly Frazier (Stillwater, Okla.) gave valuable depth at outside hitter as she tabbed a season-high of 11 kills. Also improving the Bruins' offense was senior middle hitter Emily Cahill (Lakeside Park, Ky.), as she gave her best performance of the season, recording 13 kills on an astounding .440 hitting percentage. "It was by-far the best performance for Emily," Coach Webb said. "She is a very good offensive middle. When she can attack the ball she is very, very good. It was good to see that tonight." In the first match of the Tournament Furman defeated IPFW in three sets.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Bruins quickly returned to their winning ways at home, beating IPFW in four sets (19-25, 25-18, 2516, 25-22). It was the first match of a double-header today; at 7 p.m. Belmont hosts Furman for the final game of the Belmont Tournament. After a tough match last night against Murray State, the Bruins came out quickly with a service ace from Channing Salava for the first point of the match. Throughout the set Belmont played with a renewed enthusiasm but ended up losing, 19-25. To start off the second set Mundy recorded a kill and served up an ace putting the Bruins up 2-0. The Bruins went of a 7-3 run to end the set in a victory. The rest was history as Belmont won the last two sets by an average of six points. Freshman Maggie Johnson gave significant time to the winning effort, recording 10 kills in three sets. Senior Emily Cahill picked up where she left off last night as she recorded 11 kills with a .562 hitting percentage. Cat Mundy kept on pacing the Bruins in kills with 13 against the Mastodons. BELMONT INVITATIONAL NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In the final match of the Belmont Tournament the Bruins fell to the Lady Paladins of Furman (20-25, 25-16, 1925, 16-25). Senior Emily Cahill represented the Bruins on the All-Tournament team. The match began with a service from Channing Salava, over the net to Kelsey Salava, who assisted Alexis Shaffer for the first kill of the night for the Lady Paladins. Channing, a freshman setter for Belmont, and Kelsey, a junior setter for Furman shared more than their last name, position and hometown on Saturday night - the siblings shared the same court as opponents. The Bruins lost the first set to Furman, 20-25, but came out ready to compete in the second, rushing to an 11-two advantage. The surge was fueled by a solid hitting from freshman Maggie Johnson, among others. Johnson recorded 10 kills in her best match as a Bruin thus far. Down two sets-to-one in the fourth set, Mundy went down with an injury and didn't return for the rest of the match. As they waited, the Bruins were faced with the prospect of their senior leader and preseason Atlantic Sun Player of the Year on the bench for the remainder of the match, down 10-18. As play resumed, Carly Frazier came in and recorded her first kill of the night. In the end the Lady Paladins proved to be too much for the Bruins as they improved their record to 4-3 after coming into the tournament 1-3. Overall, it proved to be a very competitive tournament with all four teams showing up in the win column for the weekend. Senior Emily Cahill was the lone Bruin named to the All-Tournament. The native of Lakeside Park, Ky., finished the tournament with 33 kills and nine blocks. Against IPFW she recorded a .562 hitting percentage with 11 kills. The Bruins travel three miles down Belmont Boulevard on Tuesday to renew their rivalry with Lipscomb at 7 p.m. Belmont leads the series 23-2 but the Bruins' season ended at the hands of the Lady Bison in the Atlantic Sun Tournament the last time they met. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In the second set of the Battle of the Boulevard, senior Cat Mundy made history, recording her 1,000th kill. Her milestone was dimmed in the Bruins loss to rival, Lipscomb in three sets on Tuesday night. With 10 kills on the night, Mundy increased her kills total to 1,004, good for sixth-most in Belmont history. Only six players have ever reached the century mark since the program's inception. Mundy has managed to be one of the most prolific hitters to ever wear a Belmont uniform despite the fact that she only had 24 kills in 17 sets during her freshman season. Tonight, she led the Bruins in kills for sixth time this season (10) in a losing effort. In front of 723 rowdy fans, set one saw both teams carry a led late in the match. Down four-to-10 early, the Bruins came back to make it competitive. Behind a three aces from Lauren Hall, Mundy and Jenny Gray paired with the blocking tandem of Emily Cahill and Kayla Albritton, the Bruins took a 16-to-14 lead. While Belmont continued to stay aggressive throughout the set, Lipscomb escaped with the 23-25 victory. Set two began with the Bruins behind 0-three, only to go on a five-point run to take the lead behind Mundy's strong serving. Tied 20-20 after Mundy recorded her 1,000th career kill, Belmont let Lipscomb takeover, going up two-sets to none with the 21-25 victory. Lipscomb closed the door on the Bruins in set three, winning 25-18. "It came down to one thing: their team wanted it more than we did and it's my job to change that. It was clear from the beginning. (Lipscomb) got after it defensively and they deserved to win. They are a good team and will continue to get better." It is only the third time in the BelmontLipscomb series that the Bruins have lost, one of those losses coming by way of forfeit. The other was Belmont's last match of the 2007 season in the Atlantic Sun Championship. The Bruins and the Bisons will lock heads again on Oct. 28 at the Curb Event Center.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On Friday night the Bruins dismantled USC Upstate in three sets while setting season-highs in team service aces (18) and hitting percentage (.500). Belmont (5-4) never allowed more than 16 points per set, holding the Spartans (3-6) to 12, 16 and 14 points. The victory couldn't have come at a better time, after dropping their first conference game to Lipscomb on Tuesday. It stops a two-game losing trend, while improving their conference record to 1-1 before meeting with East Tennessee State tomorrow. A Belmont victory most-likely indicates that it would be in three sets, as four of the five wins that the Bruins earned this season have come in sweeps. That was the message that Belmont sent to the Spartans as they quickly won the first and second sets, 25-12 and 25-16, respectively. When fan-favorite Carly Frazier made her first serve in the third set it was four-totwo, Bruins. As she rotated positions after nine serves the score was 11-to-three, a testament to her dominating performance on the line. In that stretch Frazier picked up four of her eight service aces of the match. Frazier's eight service aces were a career-high, surpassing her last mark of two, occurring twice last season. Oddly enough, Frazier recorded her first ace of the 2008 season in this match. Also helping the cause for the Bruins' season-high performance in aces was Megan Clements, Channing Salava and Jenny Gray, all reporting three aces. Sophomore Ester Mellado pitched in by serving the first ace of her career young career. Freshman outside hitter Maggie Johnson continues to prove herself as she led the team with 10 error-free kills. The native of Naperville, Ill., finished the night with an outstanding .769 hitting percentage on 13 attempts. Her effort was a big part in the Bruins' season-high hitting percentage of .500. Fellow freshman, Salava, recorded seven kills from the setting position, an aspect of her game that will prove to be valuable in conference play.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The stars came out for the Bruins' three-set victory over the Buccaneers of East Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon. Belmont alum and American Idol star, Melinda Doolittle, got things rolling by singing the Star Spangled Banner, as the volleyball team took care of business (25-20, 25-12, 25-19). From the beginning there were shades of last night's 18-ace performance, as Jenny Gray earned Belmont's first point with an ace. By the end of the night the Bruins recorded 11 aces, tying their previous season-high against Louisiana Tech. Belmont won the second set by giving up only 12 points to ETSU, setting a seasonlow in points allowed in a set for the Bruin defense. The Bruins led the last set by as many as nine points throughout, but let the Buccaneers claw back to a three-point deficit, 19-16. That's when Belmont displayed their offensive balance and finished the Buccaneers with kills from Maggie Johnson, Jenny Gray, Emily Cahill and Cat Mundy - ending with a service ace from Carly Frazier. The Bruins out-hit East Tennessee State .408-to-.173, as four players finished with a hitting percentage over .400. Freshman Johnson led the Bruins in kills for the second-straight match with a seasonhigh of 11, on a .400 hitting percentage. At the center of the Bruins balanced offensive attack was freshman setter Channing Salava, who provided 27 assists with seven kills. The native of Clearwater, Fla., also punched in a match-high of four aces. Both Cahill and Kayla Albritton reported error-free hitting performances for the afternoon. Cahill had a perfect four kills on four attacks. While Allbritton finished with seven kills and 12 attacks. With only nine hitting errors and five ETSU blocks, Belmont only hit four balls out of bounds during the whole match. . ABBREVIATED MATCH STATS Belmont ETSU Indiv. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In an entertaining match on Wednesday night, Belmont outlasted Chattanooga in four sets at the Curb Event Center. Belmont improves to a 7-4 record, as the Mocs fall to 3-7 on the season. Through two sets the Bruins looked like they were going to take care of business like they did in the last two matches, winning in three sets. But the Mocs wouldn't have any of that as they took set three going into intermission with a convincing 25-18 victory. Maggie Johnson was the go-to offensive player for the Bruins as she led the team in kills with a career-high of 15 on a career-tying 38 attempts. "Maggie sees the court well - she has grown up so much in the last three weeks by learning quickly, how to be successful," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "That has been impressive to watch. There is such a high degree of trust that a setter has in you when you take care of the ball. That showed tonight." The Bruins shut the door on Chattanooga by winning the fourth set in a dramatic fashion. Down 17-20, Belmont capitalized on the Mocs mistakes while Emily Cahill seemed to find the perfect placement with her attacks, on her way to a .476 hitting percentage for the night. In the end, the Bruins came out on top 28-26, winning the match in four sets. Belmont's .193 hitting percent is uncharacteristic of the squad's performance of late. In the last two matches, the Bruins have recorded a hitting percentage over .400. Jenny Gray put up a solid effort on the night by tying a career-high in aces with three, while recording a season-high 10 kills on a .310 hitting percentage. On the defensive side, Gray had a season-high of 13 digs. Sophomore libero, Megan Clements led the team in digs with 20, yet another season-high. Freshman Channing Salava continues to redefine the setting position at Belmont, putting up a career-high of 8 kills on the night.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Freshman setter Channing Salava recorded her first tripledouble of her career on Saturday afternoon as the Bruins defeated Campbell in four sets (25-11, 25-27, 25-13, 25-18). Salava set a career-high in kills (10), provided 37 setting assists and capped off her first - of possibly many - triple doubles in her career with 12 digs. Colleen Nilson was the last player to record a triple-double wearing Belmont volleyball uniform. Cat Mundy tied a season-high in kills with 16 kills, while leading the Bruins in that category for the seventh time of the season. The Bruins (8-4) defense stepped up for most of the match as they held Campbell (3-10) to a .052 hitting percentage, the lowest since their opening match against UMKC (8/29/08). In the first set Belmont held Campbell to just 11 points, the lowest amount of points allowed in a set in two seasons. None of the Campbell players reached double-figures in kills. It is the sixth-straight win against Campbell, dating back to the 2003 season, when Head Coach Deane Webb took the helm at Belmont. The Bruins lead the series,6-2. The teams will meet again this season on Oct. 31, at the Curb Event Center.

Belmont's two seniors paced the Bruins in kills; Cat Mundy with 12 kills and Emily Cahill with 11. It is the eighth match in which Mundy has led the Bruins in kills. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - On a beautiful fall afternoon near the beaches of Florida, the Bruins swept the North Florida Ospreys in a crucial Atlantic Sun Conference match with possible post-season implications. Emily Cahill led the Bruins by recording double-figures in kills for the second-straight match, finishing with team-high of 12. Both Cahill and Maggie Johnson recorded outstanding hitting percentages, each nearly connecting on half of their attempts. Johnson finished with nine kills and no errors on her way to a .474 hitting rate while Cahill led with a .478 percentage. It is the fifth victory in the last six games for the Bruins as they improve their record to 9-5 and 4-2 in the A-Sun. North Florida will look to rebound after two-straight losses this weekend, falling to 6-6 overall and 4-3 in the A-Sun. With the win, Belmont now has sole possession of fourth place in the A-Sun. With Belmont down 15-16 in set one, Channing Salava turned on the heat by serving on a seven-point run that would eventually led to a 25-20 victory. That run fueled was fueled by a pair of Cat Mundy kills and a Salava service ace and kill, while capitalizing on the Osprey's mistakes. In set two each team had their share of runs. With Belmont leading 12-11, the Bruins went on a 11-two run and increased their advantage to 23-13. Before Belmont took a two-set lead going in the intermission the Ospreys went on an eight-one tear diminishing their 10-point deficit to just three. The Bruins out-hit the Ospreys .198-to.158, and maintained their perfect record when posting a higher hitting percentage than their opponent (9-0). ABBREVIATED MATCH STATS Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Bruins took Florida Gulf Coast to four sets and gave the Eagles their first conference loss of the season (2519, 11-25, 25-20, 25-18) on Friday afternoon in Allen Arena, on the campus of Lipscomb University. It is only the second conference loss in the Eagles' brief history as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Jenny Gray directed the Bruin defense with a career-high eight blocks, also contributing eight kills. Cat Mundy led the team in kills for the eighth match this season with 14 on a .379 hitting percentage. Kayla Albritton added nine kills with a .312 hitting percent, while Channing Salava provided 36 assists and four kills. "Defensively, we did some very good things today," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "We took care of the ball. We hit aggressively when we could, we made good shots when we needed to and ended up with a good hitting percentage." The Eagles' Roberta Santos was a force to reckon with, as she pounded home nine service aces from the line while providing Florida Gulf Coast (7-6, 6-1 A-Sun) with 24 assists. "Santos served tremendously today got us in trouble on a number of occasions," Coach Webb said. "Other than Santos, we passed pretty well but (Santos) did a great job for (FGCU). Once our team settled down against her serve we did a nice job in servereceive and getting our hitters good swings." In the first three sets of the match, the winning team had a .325 hitting percentage or better but the losing teams ended the sets with percentages lower than .068. Belmont finished the match with a .250-to-.148 hitting percentage advantage. The Bruins are now 10-0 when outhitting their opponent. With the win, Belmont (10-5, 5-2) is the first team in the A-Sun to reach 10 overall victories for the season. Although still early in the 2008 campaign, the Bruins are poised to make a run for the top of the A-Sun standings. Currently they are tied for third-place with Jacksonville. "It's a really good win for us at this time of the year," explained Webb. "We have been improving and making strides but it is good to beat one of the top teams in the conference and raise our position in the conference. I'm very proud of the team and the effort that they put in today." ABBREVIATED MATCH STATS Belmont FGCU

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On Saturday afternoon Belmont defeated Stetson in three sets (2516, 25-14, 25-17) and continued their recent success over the Hatters - winning their fifthstraight match and 15th-straight set against visitors from DeLand, Fla. "We looked good out there," assistant coach Tony Howell said. "It was consistent play from the very start, to the very end. The nice thing about playing so consistently was that it allowed us to play some of the other team members - to give them more match experience that they deserve." The Bruins bench was led by the career performance of sophomore middle hitter Tara Blood who set career-highs in kills (five), attacks (17) and hitting percentage (.625). Carly Frazier contributed five kills while Ester Mellado connected on all of her setting attempts (seven assists). For the first time this season, no one reached double-figures in kills, a testament to the balanced offensive attack from the Bruins led by setters Channing Salava and Mellado. "Channing and Ester did a great job of mixing up the play sets to allow every hitter to have the opportunities they need to contribute," Howell said. "Everyone goes through the same drills and practices and so now we feel more comfortable about knowing that the whole team can contribute." Kayla Albritton and Jenny Gray were the co-leaders in total kills with nine, both connecting on nearly one-third of their attacks. Megan Clements collected matchhighs of 11 digs and three service aces. Belmont (11-5, 6-2 A-Sun) held Stetson (2-13, 0-8)to a .078 hitting percentage and only 22 kills - the lowest amount of kills given up by the Bruins since their first match against UMKC (8/29/08). NASHVILLE, Tenn. - As the eyes of the nation were on Belmont University and the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate, the Bruin volleyball team quietly took care of business by defeating cross-town opponent Tennessee State on Tuesday night. The Bruins won their fourth-straight match in an exciting manner (25-20, 27-25, 22-25, 25-27, 17-15), improving their record to 12-5. Belmont was led by Cat Mundy, tying a season-high in kills with 16, and Megan Clements who recorded a career-high of 24 digs. Carly Frazier pitched in 10 kills on her best hitting percentage of the season (.333). Kayla Albritton finished with no errors after 24 attempts and 11 kills. Emily Cahill recorded eight kills on her 22nd Birthday. After beating Florida Gulf Coast in one of the best matches of the season, Belmont began where they left off - with a commanding 25-20 win in the first set. In set two Belmont was put to the test by the Tigers - beginning with a 4-8 deficit. Behind two aces from Albritton and timely kills from Maggie Johnson, the Bruins found themselves tied with TSU 18-18. After tying the set the Bruins went on a 5-0 run and won the set in extra points, 27-25. After winning the first two sets, Belmont let the Tigers take them to their first five-set match of the season. In the deciding set, the Bruins mounted a comeback after being down 5-8 when the teams switched courts. The score went back-and-fourth to extra points until Frazier and Channing Salava put the finishing touches on the Belmont victory with one kill each. "The first set we attacked well, passed well, did everything that we needed to," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "We were off to a very good start, at some point in there we lost some focus but I was impressed by the way that the team came back in game five after being down by a significant number of points - to show the focus and heart to come out of that and still find a way to win the match." Belmont (12-5, 6-2 A-Sun) finished with 58 kills and 77 digs, slight advantages over Tennessee State's (4-9) 57 kills and 76 digs. ABBREVIATED MATCH STATS Belmont

KENNESAW, Ga. - The Bruins won their fifth-straight match by defeating Kennesaw State in five sets (25-19, 25-13, 22-25, 2325, 15-9) on Friday night at the KSU Convocation Center. It is the Bruins second-straight five-set match after needing five to defeat Tennessee State on Tuesday night. In both matches the Bruins won the first two sets. Mundy led the Bruins' offense by recording a season-high of 18 kills with a solid hitting percentage of .353. Gray also set a season-high in kills, finishing with 14 kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Megan Clements was the heart of the Belmont defense as she received 24 serves with only one reception error and finished with 14 digs. Behind services of Cat Mundy and Channing Salava the Bruins charged to an early 10-1 lead in the first set. The Bruins maintained a comfortable lead for most of the set as they took set one, 25-19. Again, the Bruins started off strong in the second set rushing out to a 7-1 lead and never looking back, winning the set by a total of 12 points, 25-13. At the intermission Emily Cahill reported three blocks while Jenny Gray had eight kills, on her way to a season-high of 14 kills for the match. In the third set, Belmont was down 1419 and made an effort to get back into the set by scoring eight of the next 10 points to tie the match at 21.But the Owls were determined to win the set as they came up with key blocks in the waning moments to take the 25-22 victory. By winning the third set the Owls prevented seeing their 10th loss of the season in three-set matches. The Owls forced a deciding set by winning the fourth set 23-25 in a back-andfourth manner. In the deciding set the Bruins were determined to prevent an upset from the Owls as they asserted themselves offensively by recording 11 kills - out of 15 points. Belmont's team hitting percentage in the fifth set was .769; the highest hitting percentage in one set this season. By extending their winning streak to five-games, Belmont is in the midst of their longest winning streak of the season. On the other hand, Kennesaw State is in the midst of a six-game losing streak. MACON, Ga. - The Bruins ended their fivematch winning streak as they lost to Mercer on Saturday afternoon, in four sets. Senior Cat Mundy paced the Bruins in kills for the 12th time this season, finishing with 16. Channing Salava recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 41 assists and 13 digs. Jenny Gray and Lauren Hall reset their career-high in digs, each with 19 - co-leading Belmont in that category. Kayla Albritton has been outstanding from the outside hitter position in recent matches and today was no different. Albritton finished with 13 kills on a .306 hitting percentage with seven digs. The native of Gainesville, Fla., has now hit over .300 percent in five of the last six matches. Belmont (13-6, 7-3 A-Sun) eclipsed the Bears in total kills, 56-to-49, but lost their edge in hitting accuracy as Mercer (11-7, 64) out-hit the Bruins .155-to-.200. Hitting percentage has proven to be a vital statistic for the Bruins this season. When Belmont is out-hit they are now 0-6, and when Belmont out-hits their opponents they are 13-0. "Mercer deserved to win; we didn't defend as well as we thought that we needed to," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "They are a good team and we give them credit." The Bruins are in the middle of their longest stretch of road games this season and have not played a match at the Curb Event Center since mid-September. "I wouldn't say that it has taken a toll on us," Webb commented. "We certainly enjoy being in front of our fans - they're amazing. At the same time I think that any problems that we are having on the court have to do with our executing and not the location that we have been playing."

DeLAND, Fla. - Cat Mundy recorded a season-high of 20 kills and Channing Salava reached a career-high 51 assists as Belmont won their sixth-consecutive match against Stetson on Friday night (20-25, 25-16, 2515, 25-15). Belmont (14-6, 8-3 A-Sun) entered the Edmunds Center as winners of the last 15 sets against host Stetson (2-16, 0-11), but that streak quickly came to an end as the Hatters took set one, 20-25. Stetson jumped to a 10-2 lead and never looked back. Behind the season-high performances of Mundy and Salava the Bruins recovered well by winning the next three sets by at least nine points. "Compartmentalizing the set is something we need to work on sometimes," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "Making sure that if one part of the set doesn't go well, it doesn't affect the rest of the set. That is what happened in set one. We didn't hit as well as we would have liked and we didn't defend. After that we were a little more aggressive in all parts of the game." In the last three sets the Bruins kept a 50-to-19 advantage in total kills while holding Stetson to just a .039 hitting percentage. In the absence of libero Megan Clements, Ester Mellado and Lauren Hall stepped in and anchored the Bruins defense. Mellado led the Bruins in digs with a career-high of 12, along with two service aces. Hall pitched in 8 digs from the libero position. Emily Cahill finished with 11 kills and zero attacking errors, on her way to a season-high hitting percentage of .647. Her lofty mark surpasses both the team and conference match-highs in 2008, but will not officially go in the record books because she is one kill short of the 12-kill minimum required to be recognized. Fellow middle hitter, Jenny Gray also recorded 11 kills, with a hitting percentage of.500. Belmont's middle hitter position recorded an outstanding percentage of .558 for the night. With Mundy, Cahill and Gray reaching double-figures in kills, it marked the sixth time this season that three Bruins have reached double-figures in kills.

Cat Mundy led the Bruin defense with seven digs, along with seven kills, but the Florida Gulf Coast (11-6, 10-1) defense proved to be too much for the Bruins as they recorded 10 blocks and held Belmont to their lowest hitting percentage of the season (.123). FGCU's Ana Kokanovic tallied 12 kills and 10 digs for the match as the Eagles increased their home winning streak to 32 matches. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Behind Cat Mundy's career-high nine aces, Belmont defeated North Florida in four sets on Friday night at the Curb Event Center to qualify for the Atlantic Sun postseason tournament. Belmont maintains their perfect home A-Sun record while improving to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in A-Sun. North Florida (8-11, 6-6 ASun) continues a four-match losing streak as they visit Lipscomb tomorrow. Through five matches with the Ospreys, Belmont has one the last four. Mundy finished with 11 kills, 13 digs and one ace away from a rare combination of a triple-double. The native of Dallas lead the Bruins in all three of those categories. Her nine aces set a team match-high, previously held by Carly Frazier with eight against USC Upstate, and ties a conference match-high held by Florida Gulf Coast's Roberta Santos against Belmont. The Bruins' defense held UNF to a .044 hitting percentage - the lowest mark for the Ospreys this season - and registered nine blocks. Mundy and Jenny Gray each finished with double figures in digs while both teams clocked-in 49 digs each. Maggie Johnson also finished in double figures in kills by recording 10 on a .250 hitting percentage. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont defeated Jacksonville in three sets on Saturday afternoon to sweep the weekend series and maintain their perfect home conference record. Belmont (16-7, 10-4 A-Sun) was led by outside hitters Maggie Johnson and Kayla Albritton who both paced the team in kills and hitting percentage. Johnson led the team with 13 kills on a .407 hitting percentage. Albritton led the team with a .444 hitting percentage along with 11 kills. The Bruin defense was led by Jenny Gray's seven blocks and Cat Mundy's 14 digs in a match that saw two sets go into extra points. Belmont held the Jacksonville (13-8, 8-5) to 33 kills on a .165 hitting percentage. As a team, the Bruins hit for a .305 percentage, recorded 48 kills, and ten blocks. It is the seventh match this season in which Belmont has recorded an attacking percentage higher than .300, while the 48 kills marks a team match-high for 3-set matches this season. Although the match was won in three sets, there were times when the Dolphins tested the mettle this young Belmont squad. In set two the Bruins were down 9-11, when Belmont went on a six-two run to take a 15-12 lead that led to a 26-24 victory. Likewise, in set three, the Bruins owned a 10-14 deficit but went on a four-one run to tie the score at 15. From that point on the set went back-and-fourth, eventually seeing the Bruins win in extra points.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Three Bruins recorded double-doubles as Belmont won the 27th edition of the Battle of the Boulevard in five sets Tuesday night at the Curb Event Center. Belmont (17-7, 11-4 A-Sun) now stands alone in third place in the Atlantic Sun standings, one match behind Lipscomb (15-10, 12-3). The Bruins have now won threestraight matches and remain undefeated in conference play at home. It was an up-and-down match for both teams as Belmont charged out with a 25-12 set one victory, followed by a hard-fought 25-21 set two victory for the Bruins. After comfortably winning set three, the Lady Bisons tied the match by winning set four in extra points. In the deciding set, the Bruins took care of business by jumping to a five-two lead, never allowing Lipscomb to relinquish the advantage. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont won their fourth match in a row, but not before being spooked by Campbell in four sets (25-23, 25-17, 16-25, 25-21) on Halloween night. Kayla Albritton led the Bruins (18-7, 124 A-Sun) with 12 kills and seven digs. Channing Salava recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 11 digs. In the first start of her career, Tara Blood totaled six kills on a .385 hitting percentage, along with four blocks. Blood started in place of Emily Cahill, who was unable to play due to a minor injury incurred before the match. "I thought Tara played great," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "She made the most of her opportunity out there - hitting almost .400 and getting four blocks in four sets. I'm really proud of her going in without a lot of notice and being able to perform at that level was outstanding." The Bruins fourth win in four tries did not come without some adversity. Their 23 service errors accounted for the most in one match this season and out of Campbell's 86 total points, 51 came off Belmont's attacking, service and blocking errors. Tonight's victory marked the seventhstraight win over Campbell (6-18, 4-11) for the Bruins. The Camel's 25-16 victory in set three marked the second time in 19 tries that the Campbell has won a set against Belmont; forcing the second non-three-set match in four years between the schools. "We can leave from this match, knowing that if we don't bring our A-game everyday, then we are not going to be satisfied when we leave the gym," Coach Webb said. "Whether we win or lose, when you don't do your best you leave the gym wishing that you had done more." ABBREVIATED MATCH STATS BU Kills: 54 Hitting: .206 Assists: 48 Digs: 49

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont volleyball won their fifth-straight match as three players set season-highs in kills to defeat Austin Peay of the Ohio Valley Conference on Tuesday night. It was the Bruins' fourth match of the season that went to five sets as they improved to 19 wins overall. Belmont is now 4-0 in matches that go to five sets and increased their winning streak over APSU to six. In the early stages of the first set Cat Mundy passed Britney Baggett for third place on Belmont's career kills list. The Bruins were able to hold Austin Peay to a .000 hitting percentage to take the first set, 25-19. With the score 8-17 in the third set, the Bruins rattled off nine straight points behind nine-straight services from Channing Salava along with five kills from Mundy in that stretch. The Bruins were ultimately able to close the gap and take set three, 27-25. Mundy and Johnson each recorded eight kills to give the Bruins a 2-1 set advantage in the match. In the fifth set, APSU would have tied the set, 13-13 if it weren't for Maggie Johnson's display of athleticism to keep the ball in play with a behind-the-back attack from the corner of the court, which led to an APSU attacking error. That play gave Belmont a 14-12 advantage on their way to a 15-12 victory. Mundy led all players with 26 kills to increase her career total to 1,238. The Dallas, Texas native recorded a .458 hitting percentage and 17 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. All three categories were season-highs for Mundy. Johnson finished with a career-high in kills by adding 18 to the winning effort. Tara Blood notched the second start of her career and increased her career-high in kills to eight. Salava tied a career-high in assists with 53. Jenny Gray led all players in digs with a 21-dig night. The Bruins recorded a 72 to 62 advantage in kills over the Lady Govs, marking a team season-high in that category. The Bruins defense tabbed 13 blocks, tying a season-high, along with 77 digs.
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Bruin volleyball program reached 20 wins for the fifth season in a row as they defeated East Tennessee State in four sets on Friday night (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15). Kayla Albritton led the way for the Bruins with an 11-kill effort on a .269 hitting percentage, 11 digs and three blocks. Tara Blood continued to be consistent as a starter by recording eight kills and four blocks on the night. Three Bruins (including Albritton) recorded double-figures in digs as Belmont held the Bucs to a .053 hitting percentage. Channing Salava marked her ninth double-double of the season with 34 assists and 13 digs. Jenny Gray also recorded 13 digs, along with six kills and two blocks. Belmont (20-7, 12-4 A-Sun) is just the fourth team in the history of the Atlantic Sun Conference to amass 20 wins in five consecutive seasons; the Bruins join the likes of College of Charleston (1991-95), Saint Louis (1992-96), and Central Florida (1993-97). All three schools have disbanded from the conference, leaving Belmont as the lone member to boast such a winning track record. "Having five 20-win seasons in a row makes a difference in our team and our program," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "That is our goal, to have a winning program that continues to build and continues to grow; where upperclassmen get to teach the lessons that we have learned over time to the underclassmen, so they can lead. It's not just a one or two year explosion of success, it is something that is sustained over time. It is certainly something that is a joy to be around." Webb is no stranger to consistent winning, as this victory marks the 10th season in which he has posted 20 wins in 12 seasons as a head coach. Before coming to Belmont, Webb helped ETSU to a 20-6 record during his first season leading the Bucs in 2001. In the three sets that Belmont defeated the Bucs, they held their opponent to hitting percentages of -.034, .097, and -.091. Whitney Cogburn and Erin Ryan of ETSU (9-18, 5-12) both finished with 11 kills.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Belmont won their seventh-straight match as they defeated USC Upstate in three sets on Saturday afternoon (25-17, 25-15, 25-19). Leading all players in kills and digs was Cat Mundy who recorded 12 kills and nine digs for the match. The senior from Dallas, Texas has totaled 37 kills and 33 digs in three matches this week. Jenny Gray recorded nine kills and no errors on 10 attacks on her way to a careerhigh hitting percentage of .900, with at least 10 attacks. Maggie Johnson, Kayla Albritton and Gray each aced the Spartans three times as Belmont totaled 11 aces to Upstate's zero. The Bruins also blanked Upstate in blocks, behind two from Gray and Tara Blood. It is just the third time that Belmont (217, 13-4 A-Sun) has played A-Sun newcomer, USC Upstate (7-20, 3-15) and in each match the Bruins have won in three sets. Belmont ends the week on a sevenmatch winning streak with the best overall record in the conference, but third in the conference standings. With two more conference home matches, the Bruins have a chance to gain the top-seed in the A-Sun Tournament for the second-straight season. But if you ask the team, they are not concerned with tournament seedings going into the home stretch of the season. "We're not worried so much about seed at this point in the season," Head Coach Dean Webb said. "It is about improving, and if we do that then the results will take care of themselves. The Bruins will conclude the regular season at home next weekend as they prepare for Mercer on Friday and Kennesaw State on Saturday. First-serve is at 2 p.m. for both matches.

NASHVILLE, TENN. - - Belmont Volleyball won its eighth consecutive match Friday afternoon, defeating Mercer in three sets, 25-15, 25-16, 25-23. A kill from sophomore Tara Blood (Boise, Idaho) capped a 7-0 run on the serve of senior Cat Mundy (Dallas, Texas) to push Belmont out to a quick 9-1 edge. The Bruin onslaught continued as Mundy and junior Jenny Gray (Greenwood, Ind.) powered Belmont to an eye-opening 17-3 lead. Though Mercer would get its bearings, the Bruins closed out the set with relative ease, winning 25-15. Belmont had just two hitting errors on 29 attacks in set one. The Bruins rode their high level of play into set two. Three straight points from freshman Maggie Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) gave Belmont an early 7-2 advantage. Balanced production from Mundy, Gray and freshman Channing Salava (Clearwater, Fla.) would keep the Bears at arm's reach. A Johnson kill closed out set two for Belmont, 25-16. The Bruins hit .415 in the set two victory. Set three was a much different story. After displaying some of the sharpest, most focused volleyball of the season through two sets, the Bruins understandably leveled off. And Mercer took advantage. Two kills from Mundy powered Belmont to a seemingly safe 14-9 lead, before the Bears roared back with 12 of the next 16 points. What had been flash and dash in the first two sets was about to become grit and heart. Trailing 20-23, Belmont got kills from Johnson and Gray before an ace from sophomore Carly Frazier (Stillwater, Okla.) tied the score at 23. Following a Mercer timeout, Johnson thundered another kill cross court leading to Gray's match-clincher to secure the stirring set three comeback. Mundy shined once again, pacing Belmont with 15 kills and 12 digs. Gray also added a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs. Johnson had 11 kills. The Bruins outhit Mercer, .339-.149. Belmont (22-7, 15-4 A-Sun) clinched at least a No. 2 seed and an opening round bye in the upcoming A-Sun Conference Tournament. The Bruins close the regular season Saturday afternoon versus Kennesaw State.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Seniors Emily Cahill and Cat Mundy played their last match at the Curb Event Center as Belmont defeated Kennesaw State in four sets on Saturday afternoon. Cahill proved her title of the best hitter in school history as she led the team with a .500 hitting percentage on 10 kills. Mundy, third on Belmont's career kills list, contributed nine kills and eight digs in the winning effort. The Bruins took the first set from Kennesaw State after going on a 10-3 run to widen the gap, 25-16. Channing Salava ended the set with a service ace to Selina O'Leary. Salava finished set one with three aces and a perfect hitting percentage. Set two was highlight by another long run of 8-2 that put the Bruins up, 21-13. With five kills from Cahill and Jenny Gray the Bruins took set two by a score of 25-18. Kennesaw State pressed hard to prevent their 16th sweep of the season at the hand of the Bruins. With seven kills and seven attacking errors KSU held Belmont to a .000 hitting percentage during the set. The Owls took an early 3-0 lead that the Bruins answered, tying the set at three behind one of Mundy's three aces in set three. KSU reclaimed the lead thereafter - one they would not give up the rest of the set, winning 25-22. The fourth and final set was evenly played leading up to Belmont's final push to claim the match with a 25-23 victory. Cahill recorded her last kill in the Curb by splitting two Owl defenders to end the match. The Bruins out numbered the Owls in kills 20-9 in the last set. Freshman Maggie Johnson gave a preview of what the future of Belmont volleyball will be as she led the Bruins in kills with 11 on a .333 hitting percentage. Gray ended up with her third double-double of the season, recording 10 kills and 10 digs. With the win Belmont (23-7, 16-4 ASun) completed an undefeated (10-0) conference record in home games this season. The Bruins have won 27 of the last 30 matches as the home team. Kennesaw State ends their season with records of 6-24 overall and 5-15 in A-Sun play. Belmont extended their season-long winning streak to nine as they prepare for the Atlantic Sun Tournament next week.

Belmont (3) 16 25 25 15 15 A-SUN CHAMPIONSHIP SEMIFINALS MACON, Ga. - Belmont advanced to their fourth Atlantic Sun Tournament final in five years with a five-set victory over Jacksonville on Friday night. The Bruins extended their winning streak to 10 matches behind first team all-conference selection Cat Mundy, who finished with 18 kills and her seventh double-double of the season. Jenny Gray added 10 kills and 10 digs for her third-straight double-double and sixth overall. Setter and A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Channing Salava was the core of the Bruins' offensive output as she assisted with 42 kills and added eight of her own with no attacking errors. Sophomore Tara Blood contributed in four sets and recorded six kills on 12 attacks and no errors. After defeating Campbell in the first round on Thursday Jacksonville came out and put the pressure on the Bruins, taking the first set 1625. Belmont finished with just six kills on a .033 hitting percentage. Behind seven kills from Sara Bendorf, the Dolphins led the Bruins by as much as 11 points throughout the match. Set two began with a different tone as both teams battled back and forth until the Bruins led 6-5. After that point Belmont went on an 8-2 run, increasing their advantage to 14-7 behind two kills from Tara Blood and Channing Salava. Jacksonville didn't throw in the towel at that point, recovering to tie the set at 16. The set was tied six more times before the Bruins pulled away on an attacking error from Bendorf and a kill from Jenny Gray to take the set 2523. Belmont fell to a five point deficit to midway through the third set before Cat Mundy took to the service line. During her four straight serves Mundy fueled a comeback to tie the set at 15 with a pair of aces and a daunting kill. Belmont closed the set with four-straight points to win 25-20. The last two sets saw dominating performances from both teams. Jacksonville took the fourth set, 25-15, with a .548 hitting percentage to force a fifth set. Belmont -- now 5-0 in five-set matches -- jumped on the Dolphins -0-4 in five-set matches -- registering seven kills and no errors for a .636 hitting percentage. It is the first time that the Bruins won this season with a lower hitting percentage than their opponent. The Dolphins out-hit Belmont .274 to .240. Belmont has played Jacksonville in four of their five trips to the A-Sun tournament and now holds a 3-2 advantage during the postseason. The victory also settles the season series in the Bruins' favor, 2-1.

A-SUN CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
MACON, Ga. - Belmont volleyball won their second Atlantic Sun Championship in three years by sweeping one-seeded Lipscomb 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19. The victory tied a program record of 11-straight wins and set a program record for most wins in a season with 25. The Bruins won the season series with Lipscomb, 2-1, and increased their alltime series lead to 24-3. “We are just so proud of all the girls that worked so hard at this," Head Coach Deane Webb said. "That's what we told them in the locker room -- they deserve to win this. They have worked so hard with two starters out for the better part of six weeks and we have gone undefeated during that time -- that just doesn't happen. I'm just so proud of this entire group -- the leadership we have on the team and how much they have worked to make this a reality." Senior Cat Mundy was named tournament MVP after recording 33 kills and 16 digs in two matches during the weekend. The Dallas, Texas native led all players with 15 kills in the championship's final match. Freshman of the Year Channing Salava was the second Bruin named to the AllTournament team, recording 37 assists while leading a Belmont offense that produced 47 kills on a .246 hitting percentage on Saturday night. The Clearwater, Fla., native had a tournament-high of 79 assists through eight sets. Much like last night's five-set semifinal victory of Jacksonville, the Bruins had their share of comebacks. Early in the first set, the Bruins were put to the test as they allowed Lipscomb to take a 5-0 lead. Behind Mundy five kills Belmont kept chipping away at the score tying it for the first time at 19 and winning set one 25-22. Set two began with another hill to climb as Lipscomb started with a 5-1 lead behind a few offensive miss-cues from the Bruins; but with a 7-3 run the Bruins quickly tied the set at 11. Johnson finished one of the longest rallies of the match with a powerful kill to take set two, 25-21. In set three the Bruins allowed Lipscomb a 5-4 lead but nothing more as they closed out a championship season with a set-three victory of 25-19 to sweep crosstown rival Lipscomb. Belmont's defense rose to the occasion by holding the Bisons to a .122 match hitting percentage while incurring five blocks. In sets two and three, Belmont held Lipscomb to hitting percentages of .040 and .083, respectively. The Bruins also held A-Sun Player of the Year Alex Kelly to 11 kills on a .097 hitting percentage. "It all starts with our serve," Coach Webb said. "(Alex Kelly) is a great player and if we served the ball easily [...] we are going to have a hard time blocking." Maggie Johnson led the Bruins service attack with 3 aces, adding eight kills with a .300 hitting percentage. -cont-
Lipscomb (21-11) returns to Nashville with one of the most talented young teams in the conference. Belmont will return to Music City to look forward to competing in the Bruins' second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in three years, which will begin Dec. 4th or 5th. ABBREVIATED MATCH STATS Belmont
