ILLUSTRATION AND GRAPHIC DESIGN

Experimental Typography

Roald Dahl Book Cover Series

Experimental Typography (2017)

Through this book cover series, I intended to capture the bizarre nature of Dahl’s writing through the elongated handwritten type while maintaining a sense of play and lighthearted tone of the stories through color and illustration. Additionally, the patterns on the spine and inner flaps intend to unite the series as well as provide an eye catching element to those who pass by the books on a shelf.

Rhythm & Blooms Festival Poster

Experimental Typography (2017)

This music festival poster was assigned as an exploration in creating typographic elements with dimensional depth. The colorful abstract shapes create a movement which references the “Rhythm” portion of the title and the botanical imagery references the “Blooms” portion. The plants and color palette also allude to spring, in which the festival occurs.

Illustration I

Mucha’s Modern Woman

Illustration I (2017)

This illustration was created as an assignment to create greeting card for MoMA. To include an art historical reference, I explored Art Nouveau tendencies, specifically the work of Alphonse Mucha. The theme of the socially empowered “new woman” within Mucha’s work is placed in a contemporary context using descriptive elements such as her apparel, phone and iconographic symbols.

Portrait of Adia Victoria

Illustration I (2017)

This portrait was created in response to a live drawing session of Adia Victoria, a local musician. The illustration intends to capture the subject matter’s essence and tell her story through descriptive elements. Various features are exaggerated such as her tall slender figure and her distinctive and expressive movements she makes while singing.

Adia discussed her complex relationship she carries with her identity as an African American woman from the South. In reference to her southern roots, patterns found on Gee’s bend quilts are included. Furthermore, Spanish Moss Oak trees allude to her home in South Carolina.

Insomnia

Illustration I (2017)

This illustration explores the experience of insomnia and captures the quiet, calm of the wee hours of the morning. I also experimented with the effects of light and a limited color palette to create a distinct mood.

Poetry Magazine Cover Spread

The assignment was to create a spot illustration for the cover of poetry magazine based on the poem “Catch” by Langston Hughes. The illustration depicts the loneliness of the fisherman as he sits on his island. I also created an additional illustration, depicting the scene from a different perspective on the back cover.

The Paperhanger Book Jacket

I (2017)

The Paperhanger by William Gay, tells of a murder of an innocent child which I interpreted through a predator/prey situation. The illustration references the native Tennessee flora and fauna included within the story. Additionally, the sharp and irregular qualities of the typeface chosen for the title, Eksell, intends to subtly create an eerie tone and reflect physical features of the snake.

Concept Development

Top 2000 Brands Ad: Amazon Prime

Concept Development (2018)

This advertisement project required choosing a top 2000 brand and bringing out it strong qualities and selling points. I chose to reinforce the convenience of Amazon Prime, it’s diverse features and strong brand loyalty. The whimsicality and playfulness of the advertisement aims to engage consumers and create an emotional appeal through humor.

Herbs and Spices: A Typological Study

Digital Design I (2017)

This booklet was made as a task to create a multipage piece exploring the typology of a topic of our choice. The use of herbs and spices as a rich ancient history had a significant impact in the age of exploration. This history informed the concept to create a design that references Old World Mediterranean aesthetics. The earth-toned color palette, illustration style and the use of the typeface Mrs. Eaves were combined to create a traditional and elegant tone.

I also created a 10 piece postcard set included within the book that each feature a watercolor illustration, alluding to antique botanical prints.

History of Genetics: Infographic

Digital Design II (2018)

This infographic was assigned as an exploration in layout design and a challenge to convey dense information in a way that is engaging and accessible. The text and illustrations act together to tell the history of the study of genetics and the processes developed.

A Field Guide to Haunted Franklin

Digital Design II (2018)

This project guides the reader through specified locations and explores approaches to layout design through a field guide. I visited several locations in historic Downtown Franklin, a town infamous for supernatural activity related to the tragedy of the Civil War. I photographed the exterior and interior of each location, included and a ghost story for each location and created an illustrated map of the locations.

The design references visual elements of the ornate, Antebellum style homes scattered throughout the town as evidenced by the front and back pattern, elegant drop caps and botanical decoration on the cover. Additionally, the primary typeface in use, Cochin, also originates from 18th century French engravings aligning with the style of the Antebellum era. The use of translucent paper intends to create a ghostly silhouette upon each interior image. The embossed cover draws from the lavish qualities of 18th century book design but remains mysterious and refined through the use of all black.

Personal Work

Habitat Series Shadow Boxes

Personal (2018)

These shadow boxes were created as a personal project. They were inspired by the term Umwelt, a scientific concept exploring an organism’s specific model of the world. Each box explores a specific environment, such as a forest floor and coral reef and creates an image of how an organism that inhabits these environments would view these spaces.
