DEDICATION

Mr. Funk came to Belmont Hill in 1942, one year after graduating from Harvard. He was named head of the French department, and was also a Spanish teacher. He was very active in school activities, heading up the Drama club as well as being the faculty advisor to the Sextant. After twelve years of distinguished service, Mr. Funk was appointed head of the Middle School in 1955. He immediately responded to his new position, taking it on with great enthusiasm while still contributing to school activities. In 1964 he was named the director of the Educational Enrichment Program for Belmont Hill, and the following year became regional director. His leadership has been instrumental in providing opportunities for underprivileged children from the Boston area. More evident are his contributions to Belmont Hill, his unfaultering preparation of Middle Schoolers for their important Upper School years and his almost forty years of loyalty to Belmont Hill. For these reasons the class of 1980 would like to dedicate its yearbook to John H. Funk.

Or

`4001044.irnikw syr#41#1401WKAWFORM,

It all began in the early morning hours ofa September day in 1974. The class of 1980 had begun its journey, its long and never-ending search for knowledge. Little did we realize how much the painful hours of study, of athletics, and of Drama would shape our lives. There is no doubt that these factors contributed to our growth, but in the end it was being and sticking together which got us through the years. We learned to rely on our friendship, our respect, and our admiration for one another, and even now, as we look back, we can see how impossible it would have been to survive without these. The first form study hall became our home away from home. Our desks were nailed to a thick wooden floor which served as a dustpan to hundreds of spitballs which fell short oftheir mark. We were called squeakers and for good reason, as our voices could always be heard screaching above the rest ofthe school. We were small but full of enthusiasm, and in late October we elected a president who could barely tip the scales at 84 pounds. The seasons passed quickly, and before we realized what was happening it was June and our first year was over. The educational enrichment went on. We came back from our summer vacation ready to go. We were no longer to be the small fries ofthe school. A few new faces turned up in our class and we welcomed them with open arms. They were to join our group and our group was going to get things done. We were wise and tough and sometimes flippant, but Mr. Funk had returned from his leave of absence and he was determined to shape us up. He called together the trouble-makers and made with them a solemn pact: "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours." He was a man of his word and he stuck by us through thick and thin. We grew and grew, and by the time finals once again rolled

4

—

around we had grown into the responsibilities which would now face us. We were to be at the head of the middle school, and the educational enrichment went on. Our third form year was a memorable one. Our class was almost fully formed, and we had already begun to mature physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our duties were simple. We were to run the middle school, and we did a very good job. Jim Driscoll was our president, and he delivered to us a series of dances, bowling, parties, and various other social events. Our athletic teams were far superior to any of those in the Independent School League, and our athletes had chosen which sports they would concentrate on for the next four years. We began to under-

stand the value of a true friend, and as the spring finally rolled around we were well prepared to take on the upper school. The educational enrichment went on. In the fall of 1977,after three years oftrial and toil, we had finally reached the Upper School; we had arrived. We were ready,at last, to take advantage of all the outstanding programs — academic, athletic, and extra-curricular — that Belmont Hill offered. More important, we began to meld together as a discernible unit with a definite impact on the life of the school. David Wanger assumed 8

the position ofsophomore class president in mid-December after the former president,Stu Peterson, changed schools. By this time, several members of the sophomore class had already established themselves on varsity or junior varsity teams, or were participating in debating, model U.N., drama, or The Panel. The year was a memorable one for Belmont Hill athletics. It began with an undefeated fall in both soccer and football, continued steadily as the hockey team triumphed at Lawrenceville and then rolled on to a Keller League championship, and continued with league championships in baseball, tennis, and golf.

7

Thejoys ofall ofthese successes, however, were tempered by the knowledge that in June the resignation of Mr. Aloian as Headmaster would become effective. It evoked feelings of sadness to see our friend leave, uncertainty about the future, and nostalgia as we looked back on the three years we'd spent with him. When it was announced, though, that Mr. Duncan would serve as interim Headmaster for the next year, we knew that Belmont Hill would not languish or falter, and it was with an air ofconfidence that we elected Nate Leonard and Bobby McLaughlin class president and vice president for our junior year, and the educational enrichment went on! Nate and Bobby proved a dynamic, hardworking team, organizing a class ski trip in December, running the Charity Dance, and arranging a superb junior prom,as well as contributing to an effective student council. Mr. Greer and Mr. Schoch joined he faculty, and Mr. Seeley returned from his sabbatical in Australia to teach constitutional law and lead the soccer team to a 9-3-1 record, and a young and talented squash team to a 12-7 record. After a disappointing football season, Belmont Hill's basketball and hockey teams achieved enormous success. The hockey team, with class of'80 stars Bobby McLaughlin, David Landau, and Tyler Foster, once again copped the Lawrenceville tournament, and the basketball team,

with aggressive juniors David Wanger, Joe Curtin, and Nate Leonard, reached the Class C tournament, where they were defeated in the first round by Governor Dummer. The class of 1980 began thinking about the plans for after graduation during the spring of 1979. The college hunt was initiated, and those who were prompt and ambitious had already had a few interviews and thinned the field by the time we returned in September. The educational enrichment went on. When we did return as seniors, we had a new Headmaster, Mr.

8

Wadsworth, formerly of the Nichols School in Buffalo, and a new Athletic Director, Mr. Dewar. Both men knew the names of virtually every student within a week of meeting them. Mr. Wadsworth brouht an energy and a vitality to his job which he instilled in the entire senior class; we came to Belmont Hill with an enthusiasm for life and for each other. We anticipated success all the time. We expected it. Even when we were not successful, we honestly put forth our

9

best effort; we were not a class that cold do anything halfway. We worked together and lived fully together, both in victory and in defeat. David Wanger had been chosen to lead the senior class, and he was complemented well by second-term vice president Bobby McLaughlin, who remained in the background, choosing not to grab the glory, but whose tireless work and organizational skills were evident in numerous aspects of class and school activity. Two presidents and about seventy

classmates were deeply indebted to Bobby by the time he left Belmont Hill. President Wanger announced a new emphasis in the annual Charity Drive of having fun and cooperating with each other rather than reaching some arbitrary monetary goal. The Drive included several activities, nearly one every weekend after New Year's, culminating in that annual showcase of talent, the Belmont Hill-Winsor Charity Show. The show was directed by David Talanian and Joe Curtin and its proceeds included not only hundreds of dollars for the Charles River Workshop, but a good, fun, exciting weekend for everyone involved in the show. While overall the Drive did not raise as much money as it had in past years,

participation in its activities was enthusiastic and cheerful with the new emphasis on having fun. The big three journalistic publishings flourished with Jim Driscoll at the helm of The Panel, David Croston editing The Sextant, and Charlie Griffiths and Jack London heading the Yearbook. The class of 1980 again proved its worth on the athletic fields in their senior year. Bob Yetman and Gary Martin led outstanding cross-country and soccer teams, and the football team, tri-captained by Joe Curtin, David Wanger, and Nate Leonard, persisted throughout numerous discouragements and injuries. In the winter season, Bob McLaughlin's hockey squad rebounded from a Lawrenceville disaster to win the Keller League yet again, and the basketball and squash teams provided both exciting play and superior team records. The strongest squash team in years was undefeated until it met Choate, then went on to finish third in the league. The basketball team won its division and reached the second round ofthe New England Class C tournament before being disappointed again by that old nemesis, Governor Dummer. The Hillie wrestlers, finished a great season with a 12-2 dual meet record and a second place in the

12

Graves-Kelsey tournament. When it was all over, though, when we had finally arrived at the end of our Belmont Hill career, it was the people, and not so much what they accomplished but how they accomplished it, that really mattered. We had worked with each other, partied with each other, and grown through all ofit. And we would always be thankful to the teachers and staff who allowed us to do it the way we wanted to, because they cared. Because we cared. And our educational enrichment goes on and on and on!

IN SPECIAL RECOGNITION

JOHN M. MACKENZIE

Through our years at Belmont Hill, Mr. Mackenzie has been a friend and a supporter as well as a teacher. His unstinting efforts at making us the best we could be have not always met with success or even our appreciation and there were times when many of us wished that we didn't have to face him. We wish, however, to tell him that some of it sunk in; that we are better for having known him and that we recognize and appreciate the hard work he has put in on our behalf. For all of this, from all of us ...

If you can keep your head when all about you, Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, not talk too wise; If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with warn-out tools;

In the beginning God created Belmont Hill. The Hill was without form and void, and defeat was upon the record of the varsity teams; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the Arlmont. And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the J.V. God called the light Hendo. And there was evening and morning, one day. And God said, "Let there be a championship soccer team, 1978." And there was evening and morning, a second day. And God said, "Let there be a championship tennis team, 1979-1980." And there was evening and morning, a third day. And God said, "Let there be a division winning basketball team, 1979." And there was evening and morning, a fourth day. Thus the Hill was established. On the fifth day Hendo rested. So He blessed the fifth day and hallowed it — Senior Beach. This is the generations of the Hill when it was created.

This year's Drama Club season was perhaps the most successful and productive in Belmont Hill history. Under the leadership of Club President David Talanian, the Drama Club participated in four major dramatic events. The season opened in November with the play "Curious Savage," the saga ofa sane woman forced to reside in a sanitarium by her evil stepchildren. Directed by Mrs. Kramer, it contained a poignant statement on social injustice. David Talanian forcefully portrayed the ruthless Titus Savage, while Curt Raffi was his reluctant accomplice Samuel. Tyler Wood played the patient Hannibal with sensitivity and humor and Adam Krims was the stern and caring Dr. Emmett. The unique ending ofthe play, where each patient of the sanitarium experiences his "fantasy world." left the audience with thoughts to ponder as they left the Winsor Auditorium. In February, the season took a comedic twist with the production of Woody Allen's satire "Don't Drink the Water." The two performances of this comedy took place on the boards of the Belmont Hill stage, giving life to a once extinct drama program. Directed by Ms. Skinner, the show featured fine performances by Richard Shore as the loudmouthed tourist Walter Hollander, David Talanian as the irresponsible Axel Magee, Curt Raffi as the eccentric Father Drobney and Richard Goguen as the deep voiced Krojack, all caught in a hilarious maze of Communist espionage. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Prenatt designed the beautiful set. In early April, the Belmont Hill MiddleSchoolers were able to display their talents in three one-act plays directed by Ms. Skinner. "Run Thief Run!", "Red Curtains" and "One Special for Doc" were presented on the Belmont Hill stage. These contrasting plays included fine performances by Jon London, Joe Breen, Jay Austen, David Block, Matt Winston and John Pappas. 1 awe ta ile Limilms• IS E -11111111111(111111111E:111M Ir 1 III 111111111111 G'Assi iii i-::am •

The highlight ofthe year was Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate," the musical about a troup of actors performing Shakespeare's "The Taming ofthe Shrew" while coping with everything from love to gangsters. "Another Opening, Another Show," "Wunderbar" and "Where is the Life That Late I Led?" were a few of the hit songs that filled the air of the Winsor Auditorium on April 24, 25th and 26th. The superb production was aided by the direction of Ms. Kramer, the musical direction of Mr. Prenatt and Ms. Taylor and the choreography of Ms. Skinner. These teachers must be thanked for their concern, their expertise and their professionalism. Outstanding performances were given by David Talanian in the lead roles of Fred Grahm and Petruchio, and Tyler Wood in the lead roles of Bill Calhoun and Lucentio. These two seniors acted in all three upper school productions with Winsor and made up the nucleus of the Drama Club. Peter Jukes and Conrado Bondoc were excellent as the two gangsters, belting out Porter's tune "Brush Up Your Shakespeare." Curt Raffi danced with energy through "Too Darn Hot," while Jim Driscoll and Steve Murphy made successful debuts in "Tom, Dick or Harry.- John Pezaris gave an excellent and convincing portrayal of Harrison Howell and Charlie Griffiths, Jamie King and Josh Moulton led a super chorus that could sing and dance like true Broadway performers. What a Show! What a Year!

Glee Club The Glee Club enjoyed another active year under the direction of Mr.Prenatt with a number offine performances and an enthusiastic attitude. The fifth and sixth form core, led by president Michael Bane and vice-president Tyler Wood, was strengthened by many talented first year members who were assimilated into the group as the year progressed. The group's first performance, the annual Parent's Dinner, went smoothly, as Mr. Prenatt led the sixty-five members through a program of traditional American songs, and the B-flats, a barbershop group within the Glee Club, made a short performance. After more lengthy preparation, the Glee Club held its first major performance, the annual Christmas Concert,in the Hamilton Chapel together with the Winsor School Chorus. Belmont Hill performed Berlioy's "Shepard's Farewell" and a number of other carols and pieces, but the high point ofthe evening was the rendition ofthree selections from Handel's "Messiah" with instrumen tal accompaniment. This impressive and professional concert illustrated both the growth in skill of the members and Mr. Prenatt's hard work in uniting all the voices to sing as one. The spring season opened with a joint-chorus concert at Dana Hall with the Dana Hall, Winsor, St. Marks, and B.B.&N. Glee Clubs. Belmont Hill opened the concert with several well memorize d pieces, such as Bach's "Sheep May Safely Graze," and "The Titanic." The second spring concert was held in New York with the Nightingale Bamford School Glee Club. Having traveled by bus to stay for the weekend,Belmont Hill had an impressive performance with Vivaldi's "Gloria" as its major piece. The Glee Club ended a successful year with participation in the Baccalaureate Service in the Chapel on June 4.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The Belmont Hill Student Council of 1979-1980 concerned itself with many issues, although its paramount concern was with the continual improvement of the Coordination program with the NVinsor School. The previous Student Council laid the groundwork for this effort, and the 1979-80 Council dedicated themselves to furthering Coordination's development. Following the suggestion of the previous year's Student Council, the 1979-80 Student Council held a number of -Open Student Council and Coordination Meetings.- Although some students took the opportunity to express their views to the Council members, on the whole the student participation was lackluster at best. One of the Council's major disappointments was the deterioration of the Student Center. If properly treated, the Student Center could be a source of pride, rather than shame, for the student body. Careful student monitoring and personal restraint seem to be the only solutions to this ongoing problem. This year's Student Council has also made a number of suggestions which it feels should be pursued by the Council of 1980-81. Many students and faculty have expressed a growing interest in holding exams before Christmas vacation, a reform which might prove beneficial both academically and economically. The detention system at Belmont Hill might also be re-evaluated, as consideration should be given to allowing students to work off their -hours- by performing useful chores. In addition, a welcomed concession to the senior class would be the abolition of final exams for sixth form, as this change would remove a basically unnecessary burden from their shoulders. The Student Council feels that it has accomplished a great deal this year, but that much remains to be done in the future. With its continual change and evolution, the Student Council hopes that it can help Belmont Hill to maintain its high standards of excellence.

Sorry, Tyler, there's no way I'll give you another excuse from sports.

And I had filled up my third trophy case by the time I was sixteen!

That's a funny one, Joe, but don't let Mr. Bates hear it.

Well, Joe, have you told your parents?

Step right up boys, don't be late for assembly.

Oh, no, Tim, Coach looks mad! 222

PRIZE DAY Mr. Wadsworth, parents and friends of the Belmont Hill School, fellow students and classmates: As I stand today on this podium, it is difficult to believe that it was nearly six years ago that the Class of 1980 entered Belmont Hill. During the intervening years, we have shared a multitude ofexperiences, some more pleasant than others. It has been time well spent, and I think most ofus sixth formers would agree that our lives at school have been worthwhile and enjoyable. Although many of us feel that it is now time to graduate to new challenges, it is undeniably frightening to leave Belmont Hill and enter the so-called "real world," even though we have been assured that we are very well prepared for this transition. My loyalty and gratitude to Belmont Hill and its ideas are boundless, yet I am the first to admit that the school and its environment are not perfect. However, one area that is extremely well developed is the pursuit ofgoals in the field of athletics. Belmont Hill athletics is synonymous with determination, as our desire to win is always overwhelming and often all-consuming. I know that none of us will ever forget the jubilant feeling ofaccomplishment that pervaded the campus in the fall of 1977 when the football, soccer and cross-country teams all posted undefeated records. Conversely, academics, the area ofprimary concentration at Belmont Hill, is viewed by many in a totally opposite manner. Although academic achievement is encouraged by teachers, the student body often rewards academically excellent classmates with ridicule and scorn. This "cut-down" syndrome is not only unwarranted, but it is also cruel and destructive. Athletics and academics are not so diametrically different, for the person who strives for excellence in his school work or in extra-curricular activities is just as highly motivated as one who is consumed by athletic endeavors. In fact, the goal being sought is almost irrelevant, for the act of pursuance is infinitely more important. The pursuit ofany goal, be it athletic or academic, is often more rewarding than its attainment, and if we stop pursuing excellence, life will not only be less interesting, but it will also lose meaning for us. This pursuit ofexcellence is not exclusive to athletics and academics only, but it must apply to every endeavor that we undertake. As we sixth formers leave our insu-

226

lated Belmont Hill environment, we are faced with a true challenge, for we must now learn to function in a larger community where our actions will affect many people there than ourselves. Our "me first" attitudes will have to be bridled, as our goals should be not only to succeed personally, but also to make positive contributions to their people's lives. This type of humane concern is a rarity in today's world, but it is a necessity if mankind is to continue to thrive. Such a "help thy neighbor" attitude would also be a welcome addition to the Belmont Hill environment, as there seems to be a paucity ofstudents who are willing to go out oftheir way to help others. Picking up a piece of litter, congratulating someone for a successful play, or encouraging a depressed classmate, are actions which all of us should strive to incorporate into our daily routines. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped to make this school year as successful as it has been, with special thanks to David Crosten, David Landau, Greg Clark and Bob McLaughlin. All four were many times willing to sacrifice their own convenience in order to help others and the school itself. Without their dedicated assistance, a great deal less would have been accomplished by this year by the student body. These classmates have demonstrated that effort does make a difference in our society, despite the fact that one often feels overwhelmed by sheer numbers. We at Belmont Hill carry a special inheritance with us throughout our lives — the impassioned efforts of our parents, our friends, and our teachers. Their philosophies and ideals are transferred from their hearts to our, yet they will remain alive within us only ifwe utilize their lessons. Civilization lives on tough people's ideals rather than through tangible objects. Our ultimate goal would be to contribute to others both our own accumulated knowledge and the lessons earned from our mentors. As the sixth form readies itself to leave Belmont Hill, I am confident that we are prepared to communicate to the outside world our unique redemptions. We as a class have been proud to be a part of the Belmont Hill community, and we have watched with excitement as the school has continued to grow and prosper. On behalfofthe Class of 1980, I would like to acknowledge everyone who has been responsible for making the past six years six of the most meanigful years of our lives. Thank you.

IF If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!" If you can talk with crowds and keep your virture, Or walk with kings — nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And — which is more — you'll be a Man, my son! — Rudyard Kipling THANK YOU, MR.
