DEDICATION Mr. Frederick Richardson In 1958 Mr. Richardson came to Belmont Hill. Since his arrival, he has become one of the most respected members of the faculty. Most of the class of 1985 has been fortunate enough to have had Mr. Richardson in his Chemistry class. His influence has been felt not only in the classroom, but also on the playing fields. He does a tremendous job coaching and playing in the intramural football, hockey, and softball programs. He has often been called Belmont Hill's greatest fan. If Mr. Richardson is not teaching in the classroom or leading an intramural activity, he is most likely cheering on a Belmont Hill team. It is for this dedication to the school that the class of 1985 would like to thank him. 4

Mr. Paul Wright After retiring as headmaster of the Groton School, Mr. Wright became a teacher at Belmont Hill in 1975. He has established himself as an excellent mathematics teacher. He has taught members of the class of 1985 throughout their careers at Belmont Hill. While attempting to make mathematics as enjoyable as possible, Mr. Wright makes sure that each graduate of his class has a definite grasp of the subject matter covered in the course. Mr. Wright, a senior member of the faculty, has earned the respect and admiration of this year's senior class. Whether it is greeting someone with a jovial smile and a nod of the head or spending extra time on a tough problem, Mr. Wright will always be a part of Belmont Hill that the class of 1985 will not forget.

Oh, Ted!!!

It All Began In The Early Morning Hours Of A Warm September Day In 1979

he class of 1985 started its journey, its long torturous search for knowledge. Little did we realize how the hours of study, of athletics, and of drama were to shape our lives. Yes, these things and more helped us to grow, but it was our companionship, our sticking together which got us through the years. We learned to rely on our friendship, our respect and admiration for each other, and now,

46

as we look back on it all, we see how impossible it would have been to survive without these things. The first form study hall was to become our home away from home. Our desks were bolted to the thick wooden floor that ended up as the repository of countless spitballs that fell short of their mark. And who among us will ever forget the daily pep talks of character, integrity, and discipline adminis-

tered each morning by the one and only Mr. Gallagher! Yes, we spent a lot of time in that basement home, and let us be the first graduating class to say to you, Mr. Edward Gallagher,"This Bud's for you!". All of the memories come flooding back from the depths of those basement rooms. Those of us that were lucky enough to have had Mr. Melcher for English that year were in for the roughest

7th grade class on the face of the earth (according to a 1979 survey). Perhaps it was the way he squatted on the chair instead of sitting. Could he have been teaching us throughout the entire year in spite of a severe case of cramps? Memories ... memories... memories... Who could forget math class with Mr. Norwood, that personification of wit and tact with the incurible sweet tooth? He would

point out the window during class and tell us all to look at the birds, and while our attention was elsewhere, he would quickly deposit a few gummy bears and a hot ball or two in his mouth, thinking the class never saw him! We were the squeakers, small but full of enthusiasm, and in late October, we elected our first class president, Brian DeMichaelis. The seasons passed quickly and before we realized what was happening,

it was June and our first year was over. The educational enrichment went on! We came back from our summer vacation ready to go, no longer the small fries of the school, and more than willing to help keep the new squeakers in order. A certain cockiness was in evidence that Fall, but to our dismay, we had the Third form to deal with and we found that though we were no longer at the bottom of the ladder, it

In the fall of 1982 . . . we had arrived

was a long way to the top. A few new faces turned up in the class that year and the next and we ended third form with a large and well balanced class. Memories abound from those two years, but the ones that are most vivid come from second form Ethics class, with the inimitable Mr. John Henry Funk; "Gentlemen, this is a . . . ". Sex education with style! In the Fall of 1982, after

48

three years of trial and toil, we had finally reached the upper school, we had arrived. Now we were ready to take advantage of the many programs of the upper school, academic, athletic and extra curricular. More importantly, we were now starting to meld as a class, a discernible unit with a definite impact on the school. John Danahy assumed the position of class president, with Brad

"Mahty"Feldman as the second in charge. In the Fall, sophomores Liles, Caplan and O'Riordan helped post a 9-3-1 record for varsity soccer, and the team captured the I.S.C. South championship for the third year in a row. That year the same squad came close to winning the coveted Gummere Cup for an unprecedented third year sweep as well. In Cross Country the

sophomore class proved to be a power, with classmates Okurowski, Fegley, Danahy and Gifford helping the team to a-9-2 season record and a 6th place championship placing in the I.S.L.C. Winter athletics were no different and, largely because of sophomore talent, the Hockey team garnering a Lawrenceville trophy and a league championship. Biotti, Dineen, Tutun, Caplan and

Bachner all made the squad and Chris Biotti was honored with all-league standing as early as this, his sophomore year. All in all, the class showed that, athletically, it was a group to continue the Belmont Hill tradition of exand good cellence sportsmanship. With our first set of Upper School exams under our belt, and no casualties from overwork noticable yet, we broke

for summer and prepared ourselves for the year that was to come and the rigors of what some consider the most taxing year in a Belmont Hill career. Junior year came upon us and we felt ourselves to be the heart of the school. With an air of confidence, Rob Reynolds assumed the position of president, with "Mahty" remaining on as his side kick and second in corn-

49

. . . We came to realize that it was the people that made the difference . . .

mand. This awesome twosome proved that they had what it took to please the class, and in a surprize show of tenacity, stayed on to lead the class right on through the next two years, and a memorable and educational ski trip was but one of the social highlights of that fifth form year. Athletically the class continued as mainstays of many of the teams, with Football's problem year being balanced by the succeses of another

50

stellar Soccer team. In the winter, Hockey picked up another Lawrenceville trophy, but dropped the league championship for the first time in seven years. Track came into its own this year with the foursome of Okurowski, Fegley, Danahy and Gifford running away with the honors. Baseball, too, had a remarkable season with only three losses at the very end of the year serving to keep it out of the first place spot in the league.

And the enrichment continued. . . Ah! The glories and responsibilities of senior year! College interviews, leadership roles in the school and a growing realization that this was to be our last time together as a class all had a curious effect on us. While we were far more busy and harrassed than we thought we were going to be, we began to pull together as a class even more than we had before. Cliques, though still present

in the class, began to become more indistinct and the fact that we were seniors seemed to set us off from the rest of the school and provide a type of comradery that was surprising. Athletically we were at our peak, and the glories of the teams we led can be found elsewhere in this book, but this is the time for more personal memories as we the writers of the class history look back and take time out to reflect.

Thanks must be given where it is deserved, but it is deserved in so many places and by so many people, that our time is inadequate. Thanks to Sean Rockett, Mr. Morange and the Yearbook staff for putting this book together (on time?). Thanks to Rob Reynolds and to all of our class leaders for everything you have tried to do for us and in our names. Thanks for seventh period coffee ole' (with ambience). And most

of all, special thanks to the faculty. When all is said and done,' when we had finally arrived at the end of our time on the Hill, we came to realize that it was the people, not so much for what thay accomplished, but the manner in which they accomplished it, that made the difference in this class. We have worked together, partied together and grown together through all of it.

51

"Excuse me, you want to do what to Belmont Hill?" "Well, I won't mind and the wood won't mind, but the stain does."

"I wonder if Mr. Mac enjoys receiving pain?"

52

"Do you believe that! We got fourth and two and the guy punts!"

"Nothing comes between me and my Levi's."

"Oh look! Little bubbles!!!"

"Bachner, tickle my behind one more time and it's an hour."

"I like lady friends."

53

"Look, you've got to do something with him. He just keeps grinning and walking into our locker room!"

_

"Watch, Goldie, Charlie's about to find out why they call me speedy knees." "Of course there are bubbles, stupid."

54

"Don't look at me, don't turn around, just drop the rocks in the bottom of their boat and keep moving."

"Oh jeez, if one more kid leaves popcorn on my chair, his --- is grass and I'm the lawnmower."

"Hey, Colin, ramming that old lady's boat was one thing, but you don't have to look so pleased about it."

Here lies a last word, A final touch, and a lasting memory. Here I must write something profound, or pertinent, maybe symbolic, yet preferable memorable. But which memory is most special? Which joke was the funniest? Which times were the greatest? And whom did I enjoy being with most? Can I note all the times I felt elation, pride, and security, while forgetting those filled with dejection and rage? Which piece of so large a puzzle fits best here? I don't know. I simply cna tell you that they all formed into something good, And for this I am happy, satisfied, and ready to move on.

I'd ask my friends to come and see An octopus's garden with me. We would be warm below the storm In our little hideaway beneath the waves. Summer On the shores of the Silver Sea, I told you, and you told me The starlight there would last forever, If only vainer ties we'd sever. So by the light of the blood red moon, We danced all night to the ocean's tune. There were no words that could be spoken, A feeling in me you've awoken. But time flew by on winged feet, And brought an end to summer heat. So as we left with teary eyes, We vowed some sentimental lies. Now and then we get to meet, On your shining city street. Your sideways smile, and sparkling glance Make you a picture of romance. Alas, our plans have fallen through. And nevermore I'll be with you. No yellow roses will I send, Just one, snow white, to mark the end. — David Rudnick

French Foreign Exch. Program

This year, 14 Belmont Hill students and Mrs. Wilmer embarked for Paris, France in the first of a two part exchange program. The group of 15 stayed in a hotel next to the Eiffel Tower. During the three days that they were in Paris, they visited all the sights that they had heard about in history books and Saturday morning cartoons. The next city that they visited was the Eastern city of Chalons-SurMarne where Belmont Hill has traditionally had an exchange with a French public school. Belmont Hill students lived for 10 days in the homes of their ap-

pointed French student correspondan t. Their time was occupied by attending school, playing basketball, and visiting the quaint cafes of the city of Strasbourg, a French city located on the French-German border. They stayed in this beautiful city for 4 days by arrangement of the Boston-Strasbourg sister city program. Their visits included Strasbourg's magnificent cathedral, Strasbourg's ancient section called "La Petite France", and the West German town of Freibourg. The Belmont Hill group then returned to the city of Chalons-Sur-Marne

for the night, to return to Boston via Paris. The second part of the foreign exchange involved hosting the French students from ChalonsSur-Marne. The group of French students stayed in the houses of most of the Belmont Hill students who had gone to Europe. A small group of Belmont Hill students was needed to host the excess of French students in the exchange. The French students spent their time by attending class, visiting the city of Boston, shopping, etc. All in all, the program was fun and educational for everyone.

The backfield combined for 338 yards and five touchdowns. Bob Popeo led the rushing with 137 yards, followed by co-captain Tom Hostage with 110 and the other co-captain Sean Rockett with 91 yards. The next contest was against the always-strong Nobles. The game started off fairly even, and at the half Belmont trailed 7 to 0. After the half, the overpowering Nobles squad quickly added 14 points in the third quarter and 3 more in the forth, shutting out Belmont Hill, 24 to 0. Belmont rebounded the next week with a hard fought, 137, victory against St. Marks. Leading late in the forth quarter, the Belmont defense rose to the occasion with two key interceptions by Dan Curtin and Tom Hostage to seal the victory. The following game involved a long ride to Groton. After coming

out flat in the first quarter and allowing Groton to score on their first possession of the game, Belmont rebounded with a score in the second quarter. But with this they let their guard down and allowed Groton to score again. Trailing 12 to 7 going into the third quarter, Belmont recieved the ball, but wasn't able to produce any offense at all, losing 18 to 7. Next came B.B. & N. which annually comes into this thinking it's their biggest game of the year. Belmont got fired up when Quick Guard, Mike Drucker, came out of the game with a serious knee injury. Afterwhich Belmont proceeded to push B.B. & N. all over the field, thus winning 21 to 7. The next opponent was Middlesex, who is not usually considered as a very strong team but came into the game extremely fired up. The only touchdown for Belmont was by Tom Hostage, who gained 140 yards rushing. The Belmont Hill offensive line was unable to give Sean Rockett time to pass. He was

sacked many times for a loss of 45 yards. Belmont lost the game, 26 to 8. The last game of the year and the last for all the seniors in a Belmont Hill School Football uniform was against Governor Dummer. Many of the underclassmen were not about to let the seniors lose their last game. With two touchdowns by Tom Hostage one by Bob Popeo, one by Jon Skinner and a safety by John Mullen, Belmont and its seniors won their last game, 29 to 14 . . Coach Dewar and the rest of the coaching staff were extremely pleased with the effort given by the whole team. As a result of the excellent season, several members of the team were honored with All-League selections, including Brooks, Hostage, Mullen, Popeo, Rockett, Curtin, and Boland. The staff believed that the senior's leadership this year was outstanding and they hope that next year's seniors will provide the team with that same quality. The '86 class will be led by Co-Captains Dan Curtin and Artie Boland. Hopefully they will be able to keep the momentum gained from this year's team and continue the success of the football program.

The 1984 Belmont Hill Varsity Soccer team compiled an impressive 10-5 record. It was a team forced to overcome many injuries and adversity. The team's first two challenges were Roxbury Latin and St. Sebastian's. The team defeated both, led by the scoring of Charlie Uchill, Cort Gwon, and Captain Josh Caplan. In the next game, the team faced a tough Milton team and lost, 3 to 0, before a disappointed crowd on Belmont Hill Day. The team bounced back, however, with a victory over St. George's, 1 to 0. This game was highlighted by rough and physical play from both sides. Tempers and frustrations flared as both teams failed to score. With only ten players, because of a red card, Cort Gwon scored the decisive goal, with only two minutes remaining in the game. Although Belmont Hill won, it was apparent that the offense lacked punch. The Hillies continued to stagger, losing their next three games at the hands of Nobles, St. Mark's, and St. Paul's. The team compiled only three goals in those three contests, and was shut out by Nobles. What

probably was most impressive about the team was its ability to bounce back. Having managed a meek 3-4 record in the first half of the season, the team forged ahead in the second half, winning seven of its last eight games. Belmont Hill's offense seemed rejuvenated with a healthy C. J. Young. He scored in the first 35 seconds of the Thayer game, and added one more en route to a 5 to 2 victory. Belmont Hill next defeated Groton, 2 to 1, with goals by Christian Liles and Tom Sullivan. The strong fullback line of Ted Schoenharl, Steve'Psycho' Valenti, and Christian Liles, as well as Goalie Aaron Caplan, played their best game of the season in a hard-fought battle with Lawrence. Their defense and Josh Caplan's goal was enough for a 1 to 0 victory. The team next trounced B.B & N.,6 to 0, on perhaps their best offensive display of the season. The goals were scored by Paul Tutun, C. J. Young, and Todd Copeland. The team's injury list seemed to mount, as three

160

starters were lost for the season due to leg injuries. After losing to Brooks,4 to 0, the team played its most inspired game of the season, against Middlesex, winning 3 to 1. Trailing 1 to 0 at the half, the team appeared emotionless and dejected. The team recuperated, and played a highly spirited second half. C.J. Young, Charlie Uchill, and John Goldstein each scored within a time span of 12 minutes. The team had come back once again. Charlie Uchill scored the final 4 goals of the season in Belmont Hill's final two victories,3 to 0 against Rivers, and 1 to 0 against Governor Dummer. Next year's team should be a real contender for the title, with All-League selections C.J. Young and Cort Gwon leading the offense. Todd Copeland,Ted Schoenharl, and Goalies Aaron Caplan and Mike Udris should demonstrate the necessary leadership on defense.

This year's cross country team became the most successful team in Belmont Hill cross country history by being the first team to go undefeated (11-0) and the first to win a championship (New England Class B). The only disappointment of the year was its fourth place finish in the ISL championship race. Under the leadership of Coach Zamore and co-captains Lee Okurowski and David Gifford, the whole team worked hard all year while giving the home crowds several exciting races to watch,in particular the races against Milton and St. Mark's. Lee Okurowski, David Gifford, and Joe Cannistraro were known as the front pack and, indeed, the excitement and success of the whole season lay in the team's ability to run in two separate packs. The front pack (all of which eventually won all-league honors) was able to take the first three of four places in every race but one, while the back pack (David Can-

nistraro, Andrew Fegley, Karl Benedict, John Bernheimer, and Rich Kassissieh) was quite successful in finishing in front of the opponent's fourth or fifth man. The Nobles race best shows the significance of the pack. In this race Nobles took the first two spots while the whole Belmont team finished in front of their fourth man, giving the team its closest win of the year. Some of the team's best wins came when members of the back pack finished fairly close to the front pack. Such races included the tri-meet against Brooks and G.D.A. (where Belmont took the first four spots and the first six out of eight) and a quad-meet where Belmont took the first five out of six places. On November 3 the team traveled to Groton for the first of its two championship races. There was no surprise up front as Joe Cannistraro (ninth), David Gifford (tenth), and Lee Okurowski (eleventh) all captured award win-

fling spots. The team's disappointing fourth place finish can be attributed to the back pack's inability to hold a steady pace which caused them to slow down excessively. The team regrouped itself, though, in time to win the New England Championship race the following week. In this race, Andrew Fegley had an unbelievable race as he finished first for Belmont and ninth overall. David Gifford was one second behind him, capturing tenth, while Joe Cannistraro finished fifteenth. All three won awards.

immediately afterward, but there was no rest for the weary as the Hillies had to face Lawrence for the second time of the season on the 30th. This one was no easier than the first. Down 3-2 late in the third period, Lawrence pulled their goalie for a man advatage and succeeded, scoring with thirty seconds left to play. In overtime, C.J. Young scored a breakaway goal assisted by Jeff O'Neill to win the game. Belmont Hill then strung together another series of easy wins against BB & N, St. Sebastians, Thayer, and Milton and seemed to be on a comfortable roll until the next game, at Nobles Friday night February 15, an exhibition in how not to play hockey. A sloppily-played, penalty-filled game, Nobles took a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Belmont Hill responded with three goals within two minutes at the end of the second period and beginning of the third. Nobles pressed hard at the end of the third period but did not score thanks to Joe Lobosco. A great concern was that the second St. Paul's game was to take place some five days later. Nobody knew what to expect the following Wednesday on the Hill. The team responded with what some called the greatest all-around game ever played by a Belmont Hill Hockey Team and what others dubbed the best defensive High School Hockey that they had ever seen. Belmont completely dominated from start to finish, shutting down St. Paul's offense, getting scoring from six different

players, hustling on every play, and winning 6-1. The victory clinched the Keller Division Championship and assured an invitation to the New England Championships. With lopsided victories of 10-1 and 14-1 over BB & N and Milton, the Belmont Hill Express steamed into the Berkshires as the number one seed in the NEPSIHA Division One Tournament. Belmont Hill defeated Choate in the first round 4-1, while #6 St. Paul's also defeated #3 New Hampton 4-1 and #7 St. Mark's upset #2 Kent 7-6 in an exciting overtime match. That placed three ISL teams out of four in the semi-finals, a record indicative of the quality of play in the ISL. St. Mark's played St. Paul's in one semi-final match, while Belmont Hill confronted New Prep, a considerably larger and more physical team consisting of post-graduate studentathletes, in a game that was built up to be the ultimate clash of good versus evil. Belmont Hill took the initiative, skating out to a 3-1 lead in the first period and a 5-1 lead at 2:16 of the second. New Prep came storming back, tying the came at 5-5 early in the third, but they were unable to ever take the lead despite a 35 shot barrage on Lobosco. His goaltending allowed Jeff O'Neill, who had scored the game's first goal, to score the game-winner at 10:52 of the third. Mike Swenson (2-2-4) added an insurance goal to make the final score 7-5. St. Paul's, meanwhile, defeated St. Mark's 3-2 to set up St. Paul's-Belmont Hill Battle #3. This one, played Sunday

March 3, was a classic. It had everything a hockey fan, especially an ISL Hockey fan, could hope to see. Belmont Hilljumped out to a quick 1-0 lead 19 seconds into the game on a goal by Mike Swenson. St. Paul's Kevin Powers tied it up less than five minutes later and it remained tied until Swenson scored his second of the period at 12:25 to send Belmont Hill into the locker room with a 2-1 lead. St. Paul's won the second period 2-1, so the game entered the third period at three goals apiece. The score stayed the same until halfway through the third, when St. Paul's scored on a power play. With less than two minutes left, St. Paul's took a hooking penalty. This was Belmont's last chance. Trailing 4-3 and on the power play, Mr. Martin pulled his goalie for a six-on-four advantage. With 1:05 left to play, Michael Swenson scored his third goal of the game on an assist from Chris Biotti to send the game into overtime. The first overtime period was full of tension and tentative play, and the game seemed headed for a second overtime when C.J. Young and Jeff O'Neill(heroes at Lawrence) broke into the St. Paul's zone. O'Neill took a pass from Young in between the face-off circles and put the puck behind the St. Paul's goaltender with five seconds left in the first overtime for the victory and the Championship. Some called it luck, others the "Belmont Hill Mystique," but it was, in reality, senior leadership. The senior line of Bachner, Donahue, and Swen-

son combined for a total of 18 points in the tournament and Swenson (5-4-9), later named Most Improved along with defenseman John Connors, was designated unofficial Tournament MVP. At the end of the season, individual honors further attested to the greatness of this team. Defensemen Chris Biotti and Josh Caplan were named to NEPSIHA Division One All-Star Team and five team members were named to the Keller Division AllLeague Team: Biotti, Caplan, a third defenseman, Todd Copeland, and Forwards Andy Donahue and C.J. Young. In addition, ISL Hockey Coaches honored Chris Biotti's dedication to the sport of hockey by awarding him the 1985 Richard T.Flood Shield. Biotti was also named team MVP. Next year should prove to be another fine year for the Hill. Team scoring leader and All-League Forward C.J. Young will return with linemate Jeff O'Neill to spearhead the offensive attack, while All-League Defenseman Todd Copeland and Sophomore Sensation Joe Lobosco will anchor the defense. Forwards David Browne,Paul Hauf, Jim Coady, and Goaltender Ryan Coughlin will all return with a year of varsity experience under their belts. Hopefully,Dave Pergola will be able to return from nagging injuries, adding another scoring and skating threat. Meanwhile,a fresh new cast of characters will attempt to fit in with the old in order to continue the Belmont Hill Hockey legacy with yet another championship season.

At seasons end, the Belmont Hill Basketball team had compiled a 9-9 record. This record does not come near telling the real story of the personal as well as team success experienced by this winning squad. After two losses to Nobles, the second of which shattered their chances of winning the Rivers tournament, the team showed that they were not willing to stay on the backs for long and came back to thrash Milton in a game where Captain Kyle Delaney scored 30 points. This success carried them on, and in the next game against BB + N, the Hillies came from a third quarter losing position to eke out a 39-38 victory. Though this power was not to remain through the rematch with BB + N, this game also gave the team a solid foundation for it was a match in which all the team scored, and the overall effect was a season high of 77 points.

Back on the Rivers courts, key player Jerry Jordan showed his stuff with agressive first half scoring and rebounding, keeping the home team to a losing 49 points against 60 points scored by the boys from The Hill. Kyle Delaney was not to be outdone, however, and in the next match against Roxbury Latin on our home court, he scored his second 30 point game. A late Roxbury surge had the crowd worried, but a skillful jump shot by Andy Shaw put the game to bed with less than 3 seconds remaining. With two setbacks against St. Pauls and Thayer under their skin, the team was hot for a win, and win they did. Three straight! A nail-biter against Brooks in which free throws from Captain Kyle put them over the edge, an easy but graceful win over Middlesex, and hard fought contest against the boys from Lawrence, where it was the corner work of Jerry Jordan and the superb over-

all play by another key player, Sean Rocket, that saved the day. From here, the season seemed to fall apart, and try as they would, the Hillies couldn't win any of their last three games. Still, it was a season to be remembered, with Kyle racking up honor after honor; four thirty point games, his one thousanth game point and a game point average that put him in all league standing (22.7). Sean Rockett garnered the Amon award, and there were moments of elation this season that any fan of the game will cherish for a lifetime. Who could forget the game-winning shots that came from Andy Shaw twice when the team needed him most, or the half court shot from Dave Smith that unerringly found its way home? There is no doubt, the seniors will be missed, but the team, under the leadership of Dave Smith and Mike Drucker would like to simply say thanks, and look ahead to another great year.

The 1985 Belmont Hill Squash Team enjoyed its finest season in over 10 years with numerous moments of joy and triumph. Along with an outstanding record of 144, the Hillies won the first annual 5 team league with a perfect record of 8-0. Still another amazing accomplishment was the winning of the New England Prep School Championships held at the Choate-Roremary Hall School in Connecticut. Until this year, Belmont had only won this honor once, and this year's win showed the strength and determination that the team possessed.

Playing at number one position was four year veteran Jon Bernheimer. At number two position was senior star Doug Lifford, at three, senior Sean O'Riordan, at four, rookie Aaron Caplan, and closing out the team, another rookie, Alan Derkazarian. At the outset, there was some concern on the team as to the competitive experience at numbers four and five, but as the season wore on, Aaron and Alan proved themselves to be more than up to the challenge of playing on a championship team. The team began its season with a second place finish at the Jack-

son Tournament, an annual event held at the Brooks School. The team lost to a determined and talented Milton squad by a few points on this day and it was time to get down to business. Practice became even more grueling and the hard work payed off in the very next outing, Belmont Hill Blanked the same arch-rival, Milton by a score of 5-0. This stunning win set the tone for the rest of the season, and though the team lost in close matches to St. Paul's and Andover, confidence and hard work prevailed. After this, the Hillies would beat every prep school

team that they came up against, bar none. The only losses coming later in the season at the hands of college teams. Highlights of the season include a thorough trouncing of the once very competitive Choate team, two key victories against a very solid and able group from Groton, and another gutsy match against the Milton squad on their home courts where the men from the Hill squeeked by with a 3-2 win. The last competition that this team was to play was the Interscholastic Championship Match at Choate. The top three players from twenty eight New England schools attended, and Belmont Hill tied for first place in the team competition. Junior Jon Bernheimer and senior Doug Lifford led the way by winning the "A" and "B" divisions, respectively, while senior Sean O'Riordan performed nobly in the "C" division, reaching the quarter finals. It was a tremendous day for the Hill and a great way to end a season. The team would like to thank Mr Seeley, who, again has done a tremendous job and to take a moment and look ahead to next year. The program continues and more championship teams are on their way.

The Belmont Hill nordic ski team has always been at the top of the league and this year was no exception. The team was in good standing right from the beginning, having only lost two of its varsity members. The returning team members were rich in talent and experience and its depth was so incredible that it could have fielded two varsity teams, not just one. As a result many of this years top J.V. members placed high in the standings for varsity races as well as winning their own. The year got off to a bad start, there was no snow. Thus, following a week of dryland training and running the team was forced to move into roller skies. However, this training greatly enhances the conditioning of the team and provides them with the edge when the snow finally comes. Another important part of the teams training came during the early part of Christmas vacation. This was the teams annual trip to the Bates Motel in Waterville Valley. This trip give the team a chance to test its skills on snow far earlier than would be possible if they remained inside the 128 sunbelt. At Waterville long ski trips were planned to provide the team with conditioning. In between these jaunts the team worked on specifc skills with Waterville coach Paul Daley. Also at Waterville the

first of a series of varsity tryouts occured. There are many of these throughout the year and the varsity standings are constantly changing. The first race of the year was very controversial. Belmont was missing one of its varsity members due to illness. In addition, there was a dispute at the finish line as to the actual place of one of the Belmont skiers. As a result the race was said to be a loss by Belmont to the Noble and Greenough School, yet as to this date there are conflicting reports as to who won the race. Either way the race would be close, merely the question of two points that one team would have over the other. The rest of the races, however, contained no controversy at all. Belmont won them all easily with the next competitor far behind. BHS consistently placed its four scoring skiers in the top ten of the race and sometimes had all six of its skiers in the top ten to twelve. The J.V. team did exceedingly well, winning all of its races and sometimes sweeping the field by placing its six men in the first six places. In February some of the Belmont skiers participated in the Canadian ski marathon. The trip occurred over the weekend and the students took of the Monday following the trip to recover. The marathon is 100

miles long and takes two days to complete. The course streches from Montreal to Ottowa. The skiers who went were Karl Benedict, Joe Cannistraro, David Cannistraro, Colin Blake, David Gifford, Andrew Fegley, Tim Gibbons, Peter Landau and Adam Thornbrough. Three coaches also went on this trip. Mr. Bates, the vetern member, joined the group as well as coaches Kirby and White. Of those who went only four finished. Joe Cannistraro and Andrew Fegley completed the course for a bronze medal as did Mr. White. Mr. Bates also completed the course, capturing the gold by camping out on Saturday night. While these people were skiing in Canada a member of the team was trying out for the Jr. Olympics. Brad Bates placed very well in the easterns and in March moved on to the nationals were he placed respectibly. The team as a whole did very well, coming in first in the league with a record of 37 and 1. BHS had two all league skiers, Brad Bates and Joe Cannistraro. Next years team looks at least as strong as this years team and hopes for an undefeated season under captian-elect Karl Benedict.

As it has for, at least, the past seven years, the Alpine ski team has won the league title for Alpine Skiing. Great efforts by Steve Valenti, Lee Okurowski, and Dominic Dimare in the last race of the reason at Nashoba Valley, gave Belmont Hill the first, second and third place finishes, respectively. With this win, Belmont Hill captured the league title. The season had opened up on a down note with the ski team and its competition running gates due to the lack of snow. Despite the lack of previous practice, the Hill won the race with Steve Valenti taking first, Christian Liles taking fourth, and Dominc Dimare and Chris Monaco capturing seventh and eight respectively. Putting in some good finishes, was the third former, Carl Eldh. Due to the fact that four of the ten top skiers were either disqualified or lost time from costly falls, the second race went to Milton with Belmont Hill taking second. This second place finish tied Milton and Belmont Hill for first place on the basis of points. Backed by the necessity to do well

None of this year's success would have been possible without the consistant skiing from Rob Reynolds and Chris Moon, and the excellent effort from co-captains, Tom Bride and Christian Liles. Next year's team promises to be another good one with the aid of Carl Eldh, Chris Moon, Marx Bowens, Phil McCray, and next year's co-captains, Chris Monaco and Marco Dimare.

After a close game with Milton on Wednesday the eighth the Belmont Hill Baseball team won the next four games by impressive margins. On the Saturday following the Milton game Belmont took on a weak Governor Dummer team. With junior Chris Connelly on the mound Belmont could not get their offense and defense in sync. Chris threw a fine game but a few errors cost Belmont runs. Also the Belmont bats did not start until the eighth inning. At the bottom of the eighth the game was tied at six apiece. Suddenly the team came alive. Gerry Dineen, Chris Biotti, and captain David

Fedderman each hit a double to put the game out of reach for G.D.A. at 7-6. On the same day that B.H.S. won, league leading Roxbury Latin lost. This means that if Belmont wins all of their next games, including one against Roxbury on Saturday the 25th, then Belmont Hill will be the I.S.L. champions. On Wednesday the 15th, Belmont traveled to arch rivals Noble and Greenough School. From the start Belmont dominated the game. In the first inning B.H.S. scored 4 runs off of hits by seniors Sean Rocket and Paul "gibblets" Tuton. Chris Connely did his part

by striking out sixteen batters on his way to a 11-0 shuthout. This win put B.H.S. one game closer to the Championship. BB&N was the team that defeated Roxbury Latin and on Monday the 20th Belmont went to Cambridge to take on this strong team. Captain David Federman had been preparing for this game all week. He came out flat in the first few innings and let up nine runs by the fourth. Most of these runs were not all Federman's fault and could be contributed to some unfortunate errors in the field. Like a basketball tall tale, Belmont Hill came out in the fifth

and scored two runs to cut the lead to two runs. Federman beared down and pitched very well, while Belmont Hill's bats started to smoke. In the bottom of the ninth with men on 1st and 2nd David Federman stepped to the plate, he swung and missed on the first pitch but on the next pitch he hit a shot into the swimming pool to win the game by a 10-9 score. This game was straight out of baseball legend, the clutch hit in the bottom of the ninth. An unbelievable five homeruns were hit in this game. One by Sean Rocket, two by Chris Biotti, and two by David Federman. This game was a must win for Belmont Hill. With one more game out of the way Belmont took a long bus ride up to Brooks school in North Andover on Wednesday the 22nd. Brooks was supposed to be a strong team but on Wednesday they could not even get a hit off Chris Connelly who pitched the first no hitter of the season. He was helped by David Parrot, who caught the game, and by Jimmy Coady who had some nice plays in the field to turn potential hits into outs. Also nearly every person on the starting line up had a good day at the plate. Belmont Hill rolled over Brooks on their way to a 9-0 win. Belmont Hill has now won three out of the four games that they must win. The only thing that stands in the team's way is Roxbury Latin. David Federman will be on the mound for this game and hopefully the team can put together a perfect offensive and defensive game to bring an I.S.L. championship back to the Hill.

Though the 1985 Lacrosse record shows a character building season for B.H.S., the team actually had a pretty good season, handling a much tougher shedule than the previous season and doing it with pride and a certain measure of success. It all started out well, and for a while, it seemed as though the team might play a role of power in the Colonial division. After a week of double sessions during spring break, the first controlled scrimmage with St. Mark's showed a team that could play evenly with a much more experienced squad, and some rookie sophomores who were definitely ready for the varsity field. The next Wednesday, the B.H.S. team opened their regular season at home against Rivers. The game was hard fought, and the victory went to the Billies, despite a strong second half come - back attempt by the Rivers squad. Second half problems were to haunt the team all season, but this was far from the minds of a confident and joyous home team. The confidence grew, and the following Saturday, the team blew out Lawrence,9 to 3 in what was to be their last victory for a while. For the nextsix game, victory was elusive for the Billies. Nobles edged ahead to win 10 to 8 and a powerful St. George's squad beat them 4 to 1 but the spirit didn't fade, for both of these scores were improvements over the previous season's performance. The game with Groton showed B.H.S. at the low point for the season, with the Groton team pulling ahead 11 to 1 in the first

half, and the laboring Hillies not waking up until late in the last periods, when they made a come-back attempt with 5 goals of their own.It was a case of too little, too late. The following Saturday proved to be the real heartbreaker, however, as a 4 to 1 lead against Roxbury Latin dissolved in that second half crunch. The final score was8 to 9, and the Belmont team hit the locker room with the bitter taste of defeat in their mouths. The moral of the squad was rapidly deteriorating, and after losing a third period lead of 5 points to end the Milton game 17 to 13, the benches cleared with a brawl and a lot of squabbling about the quality of the officiating at the game. Something was needed, and quick. Coach Tredennick laid it on the line to the team the next day,and the spirits of the squad improved markedly. Even the 6-4 lose to St. Paul's that followed failed to shake it, and it was obvious to all that this was a team out to give their best effort, with no excuses tendered. Things seemed to be looking up for B.H.S. now, as they went on to beat St. Sebastian's 7 to 3. Experience still proved to be a factor, however, and another heartbreaker followed when the team lost to a Pingree squad that they had handily beaten last year. From here it was up and down, with a heartening win over first year Brooks, and a striking blow out at the hands of the team from Providence Country Day,led by all-american, Corey Cavitt. The next two games kept Belmont in their doldrums, with scores of 6-3, Govenor Dummer, and 19-6, Middlesex, but the season ended on a positive note as the Hillies rallyed to beat a B.B. and N.team to whom they had lost the previous year. The year was highlighted by the top quality coaching of Messrs. Tredennick and Kurtz, and the able leadership of Captains Feldman and Hostage. Hostage provrd to be overall high scorer for the squad as well, with 31 goals for the season, and two 5 goal games. He was elected as an alternate for the North - South all-star game, and awarded all-league status. The season's M.V.P. award was a shared distinction this year, with kudos going to Tom Hostage and Charlie Uchill, who had a solid season in the nets. Next year's captain, C.J. Young also showed he has what it takes, with a season record of 15 goals and 5 assists. With no defensemen and only one attackman moving on to college, the team looks strong for next year. This year's team would like to wish them all the luck in the world!

Captain John Conners led this year's Crew team to a very successful record of 18 wins and 2 losses. The season started out with a hard earned sweep of the BB + N team, the first and third boat winning by less than a boat length. From here they went on to beat a rebuilding Nobles team that proved to be not much of a challenge. All four boats rowed extremely well, however, and thanks to this, and a rather strong tail wind, the first boat managed to break the course record by 13 seconds! Following the Nobles race was the Brooks, Groton tri-meet, where the first and second boats suffered their only

regular season defeats to two very strong and able crews from Groton. It was in the following week that rookie coach Tim Wood decided to risk a mid-season change to his all important first boat. It proved successful, and the improved team travled to St. Mark's to take on a fast improving young squad. The day was a hair raising experience, with the first boat pulling their hearts out to come back from a length down well into the race and winning by a half second. The last obstacle for the team came on May 25, as they traveled to Lake Quinsigemond to take

place in the New England Interscholastic Rowing Championships. Much was at stake here, for Belmont Hill has long been a power in the New England championships and our teams started this contest with our third and fourth boats seeded in first place, our second boat seeded second and the first boat seeded third. The day started off in an exciting way, with the fourth boat pulling ahead to win by 11 seconds, their closest race in an undefeated season! The third boat, also coming off an undefeated season was not quite as lucky, but placed a solid third to very strong boats from St. Mark's

and Groton in the finals. The second boat finished third as well, and the stage was set for the finals race of this year's first boat. This being the first varsity year for Coach Wood, the strain was beginning to show, would he end his first season in the winners circle or would the team finish with a disappointment against the awesome competition? Coach Bassett, on the sidelines after handing over the reigns this year to one of his own must have felt the pressure as

well, for here was a boat full of oarsman that he had brought up through the ranks, a team as much his own as any other, though he had stepped down as coach. In the end, the team came through, with a close race ending in a one second victory over South Kent. The trophy for best overall showing at the regatta also went to the Hillies, and the teams nutured by Mr. Bassett and ably taken over by Mr. Wood put another winning season to berth.

The 1985 track team experienced the best season in the school's history with a record of 71, which was second only to an undefeated Milton squad which also competed on the class A level. Under the leadership of coaches Kirby, Fisher, Bickford, and Okurowski (class of 83'), and cocaptians Lee Okurowski and John Danahy, the team had high hopes of shedding it's reputation of mediocrity in the ISL. The first test came at the Exeter relays where the top ISL teams and a few class A teams competed. Belmont Hill coach Kirby elected

to "hold back" some of the hill's top talent in order to gain an advantage in the head to head meets later in the season. Despite this, Belmont Hill held their own. This stragedy paid off early as Belmont surprised a strong Thayer team in a close meet. Although overmatched in the field events, Belmont Hill kept it close with seconds and thirds in these events. By doing so it could easily overcome a small deficit with it's awe inspiring running attack lead by veterans Okurowski, Danahy, Fegely, and the Cannistaro brothers, new corners Greg Supple, Jerry

Jordan, Peter Trevisani, and Rich Kassisieh, the team found it easy to totaly eliminate the deficit and win the meet. Belmont Hill continued it's winning ways with victories over two strong teams,ST. Georges and ST. Pauls. The true dedication and spirit of the team was demonstrated at ST. Pauls where the team found itself trailing by four points going into the final event because of a disqualification of an apparent win in the 4x100 relay. However in the final event, an inspired 4x400 relay team smashed the school record and defeated the

other team for the meet. This victory was followed by a loss to powerhouse Milton. This was the teams only loss of the year. This, however, did not discourage the team, but only made them more determined as they crushed Portsmith Abbey and Tabor. Againt Tabor, junior Bill Egan (one of next years tri-captians) lead the field events by breaking the javilin record. This was just one of the many school records that fell to members of this years track team. After these impressive victories the track team headed to the NEW ENGLAND CLASS B Championships where they finished fifth out of eighteen teams. Lee Okorowski overcame the flu to win the 400, and by the end of the day Greg Supple had broken the school record in both the mile and the intermediate hurdles to place second in both events. The team was a little disappoimted with a fouth place finish in the ISL meet at Milton, but rebounded against GDA to finish out the season on a strong note. The team would like to thank all the coaches and parents who supported the team, and especially Mr Kirby whose long hours of dedication to rebuilding the team made it all possible.

The 1985 Golf team was not expected to do as well as the previous year's team. After all, the team had lost 5 of its top players to graduation. Returning lettermen Barnard, Jacobs, Tellier, and Stamatos took on the challenge, however, and were determined to be strong competitors in the I.S.L. league. Newcomers Barrett Coakley, Erik Brooks, Rob and Scott Madden and joined in the spirit and, captained by Doug Barnard, the squad was not without confidence of a good season ahead. After a questionable start against Milton, the team went on

to win two important matches against a strong Nobles squad and a somewhat weaker group from Rivers. Another match with Rivers yielded similar results and the team was off and running. The first real defeat of the season came against a very strong and well balanced squad from St. Sebastion, a team later to go on to win the Independent School Championship as well as the year's league title. The next two matches, halved against skilled teams from Lawrence and Nobles kept up the spirits of the Hillies, but nothing could save them from defeat at the

hands of a surprisingly strong team from Gov. Dummer Academy.Low,but not out for the count, the team came back to win the next two matches against Thayer and Lawrence and come in for a 43 loss by decision to an up and coming Middlesex team. After a resounding victory over BB + N, the stage was set for the I.S.L. Championships. Though our top five players had the strength and determination to finish as strong contenders, it was not to be and the squad ended in a disappointingly low sixth place. The team still had another regu-

lar season match, a tri-match against St Sebastian's and Middlesex, two teams that had defeated us before this very season. St. Sebastian again proved the stronger team, but the Hillies were able to beat Middlesex at this time, a fact that was to play an important role in the standings at the end of the season. And so, the season ended, with Belmont Hill posting a 8-3-3 record and some very solid playing by team members Eric Lowrey, Mike Saperstein, Brian Golden, and Chris Bove. With the bulk of the team moving on again, the outlook is questionable for an experienced team, but very solid from the point of view of enthusiasm

The Sailing team had a very successful season this year, ending with a 10-5 record, one of the best in years. Early training at Community boating in Boston proved effective, as Belmont Hill flew by early opposition easily. Boat speed proved vital in these early two races, and Tom Sitzman (87') proved his ability by sweeping first in the first two meets. After the first loss, in a heartbreaker to Brookline, coaches Zamore and Wilson shifted the emphasis to tactics. The team went to M.I.T. for extra practice in

the maneuverable tech dingies, honing their skills in starts and general team racing. This training paid off as the BHS team scored a dramatic sweep against the normally unbeatable Tabor team. BBN fell similarly to superior tactics. Later trouble against Portsmouth Abbey and St. Georges in the high performance 420's, honed the team tactics further. By mid season, Belmont Hill had a very close knit team with a well developed set of team tactics. Individual sacrifices (particularly by

captain Colin Blake and captain Alec Burt) in addition to some very alert sailing by junior Jon Burt led to a four race winning streak. Crews also became a factor as the racing became fiercer. Hal Bourne, Rob DeMars, freshman Bob Puffer and captain Dave Gifford were vital to their respective skippers, particularly in the unfamiliar boats at Tabor and St. George's. The last three races were indicative of the vastly improved 1985 team. In what should have been a rebuilding year (three out of four

skippers having graduated in 1984) the BHS team showed it's depth with impressive finishes from all of the team including seniors James Kantor and Chris Medaglia. Their individual efforts in a final victory over BBN revealed both the depth and team unity of this year's team and the coaching skills of Messrs. Zamore and Wilson. While two of our varsity skippers are departing this year, next year's team will have no difficulty adjusting. The depth and experience in next year's team will doubtlessly surpass that of this years. As junior co-captains Jon Burt and Tom Sitzman, however, went on to superb individual efforts in the New England regional championships. With Bob Puffer and Rob DeMars to fill the remaining void, next years team promises to be Belmont Hill's best ever.

The Varsity Tennis team had hopes for winning its third consecutive tennis title with St. Paul's, Milton, and G.D.A. left to play. Against what is considered a tough St. Paul's team, Belmont Hill scored an overpowering victory; 16-2. Strong singles play from Leon Palandjian,a 6-4,7-6 winner, Andrew Kaneb, a 6-1, 6-2 winner, and Jon Krane, a 6-1, 6-2 winner, carried the team. St. Paul's had only lost to one opponent before the Belmont Hill match and coach Myers had warned the team not to look ahead to the Milton match. Witn strong concentration, St. Paul's was crushed, despite unfavorable weather conditions. The real showdown came on Wednesday with Milton and Be!-

mont Hill going head to head, both undefeated. In the early going, things looked like they were going well as all of the top four singles players were eigher leading or close behind. The top 4 for Milton responded though, with two 6-4 wins from their top players in the first set. After this despite a valiant effort, Milton went on to an early 8-0 lead after 4 singles, and never looked back. The bright spots for Belmont Hill were from sophomore Reese Genser who split sets, and the doubles team of Jon Krane and Leon Palandjian who captured two sets at the number two spot. Despite their unhappiness with the loss to Milton, the team is looking forward to its last match with G.D.A. The team is also looking forward to next year's season with 6 out of the top 7 players returning.
