ith the hope of capturing and preserving the memories of our days as Hi!lies, we, the 1986 yearbook staff of the Belmont Hill School, present the Sundial. We have worked diligently and enthusiastically in our efforts to produce our yearbook. Hopefully, this momento will be shared with future generations and will be used as a reminder of the wonderful and rewarding times which we have shared at Belmont Hill. In recording our activities over the past several years, we have attempted to make this edition of the yearbook not only an album of pleasant recollections, but also a symbol of our achievements. We have advanced from boyhood to adolescence, and have been guided by our parents and the faculty of Belmont Hill School toward making progress in learning, sportsmanship, leadership, character and service. We shall be forever grateful. As we pursue our chosen careers, may we always keep in mind the foundations built at Belmont Hill as well as the gratifying and spirited times we have had together. Our deepest thanks go to the faculty, students and all those who willingly cooperated to make this yearbook a reality. We especially wish to thank our Advisor, Mr. Morange, for his patience and guidance. His unselfish contributions of time, effort and experience are greatly appreciated.

DEDICATION To you, Mr. Myers, the Class of 1986 proudly dedicates our Sundial. You have had a special influence on us, both as individuals, and as a class, at Belmont Hill. As Chairman of the English Department, teacher of Shakespeare, poetry, and writing, you have taught many of us during our years in the Upper School. Your classes were conducted in a relaxed manner, which we all enjoyed, but you also challenged us to express ourselves effectively, both in the spoken and written language. Your appreciation and enthusiasm for fine prose and poetry is contagious, and most of us leave Belmont Hill with a better understanding of literature. Who will ever forget your impassioned talks about World Federal Government, your Gullah stories, or the times before vacation when you would indulge your students with your harmonica playing? Tennis players have benefited enormously from their association with you as coach of Varsity Tennis. You have served effectively as a faculty senator in the new school government and have manifested a genuine concern for the welfare of the entire school community. For your dedication, concern, and friendship, the Class of 1986 thanks you and wishes you continued good health and happiness.

CLASS HISTORY The "Big Bang", an event which called into being the universe as we know it. For all of us in the class of 1986, that event might as well have been the day six years ago when we first arrived on the hill. From that point on the unstoppable forces of Belmont Hill were to bind us and change us in so many ways, creating the unity of one form where before there had been only chaos. September 16, 1980, and forty two seventh grade boys came together for the first time, forming the nucleus of what was to evolve into that unique body; the class of '86. Surely some of us must have needed assistance on that morning as we wandered about, lost in the intricacies of the boy's school dress codes and wondering at the size and confidence of the upper schoolers, but the day passed swiftly and we fell into step with the whole system - more or less. Weeks became months and then semesters and before any of us had the time to notice it, we had become a class. Swelled by the ranks of those boys who entered in their second or third form years and depleted by the loss of those boys who chose another path, we marched on, seeking knowledge, both in and out of the classroom, and pursuing our own destiny. Throughout these years we learned valuable lessons from each other and discovered the indestructible bonds of friendship and cooperation. We focused our different aspirations and interests into positive

8

factors that contributed to a stronger and more diverse student body. Now,as we look back with the power of hindsight, we can see that our comradeship and mutual respect were essential ingredients to our development as a unified class with its own personality. We quickly received our baptism of fire in the form of Mr. Gallagher. All of us who were lucky[ enough to have lived through that year will recall his pep talks and the famous phrases; "Go to Nobles! Go to

B.B.&N.!", or "Grossman! Why forget the "Ethics" teacher who haven't you done your homework?" thoughtfully explained the mysteries, Mr. Gallagher was a benevolent joys and consequences of sex to a source of guidance and wisdom to room full of giggling "squeakers". some, the personification of the devil At the very least, he was a kind and himself to others, but either way, he generous friend. Our class was also among the last was able to instill in us the determination and discipline to make it to experience English with Mr. Melthrough the tough times that lay cher. He had the strange habit of striking his feet together as he spoke, ahead. Other faculty were with us too in as if he were trying desperately to those days, not the least of whom kill some insect! Entering his class was Mr. John Funk. He was in his last years here, but which of us can 9

unprepared one had the feeling of falling out of a plane without a parachute, but which one of us can say that he has forgotten the teachings of that class. Even now, don't you occasionally remember snatches of "Horatio at the Bridge"? Our second form year was one of transition. No longer "squeakers", and still not in the glorious position of third formers we were relegated to that twilight zone of the Middle School. Seasoned veterans, we had little to do, we thought, but make it through the year and anticipate that rise to complete power - the Third Form. We had little time to dwell upon our coming glory, however, or to appreciate it when it actually arrived, for somewhere along the line the faculty had missed the message that we had now arrived. They actually expected us to work and to learn even more than we had in the first form, and learn we did. During these tumultuous years we gained many new members to our class and left a few by the wayside, but at the end of our third form year we were an entity, an emerging force in the life of the school, and we were ready for anything; or so we thought. Now we had reached the realm of Mr. Goodband. We were rapidly gaining a spirit (and a reputation) apart from the other- classes of the Upper School, a spirit of self determination and independence. It helped to solidify our ranks and push us to the forefront of conversations. For good or bad, we were a force to be reckoned with. Mike Drucker took the lead that year as president and we were off to conquer the world but there were still plenty of surprises in store for us. We were confronted with the harsh realities of "Bio" and its even crueler counterpart; "Bio A", and what had been only a little understood joke among the fifth formers became the nightmare of the pig practical. Other areas of our academic life weren't half as intimidating, however, and we managed to make it through in spite of ourselves at

times. Our junior year came around at last and the class of '86 took to the playing fields. The soccer team was supported by the likes of Aaron Caplan in the goal and the ever present C.J. Young. The football team began its reemergence as a power with the revitalizing force of Paul Popeo, John Skinner, Peter Trevisani and others. Joe Cannistraro and Commander Karl Benedict lead the cross country team to league dominance under the watchful eye of coach Zamore. Todd Copeland helped carry the hockey team to a successful sea-

son while David Smith and Mike Drucker paid their dues on the basketball court. There was no challenging John Bernheimer on the squash court and in the spring, it was Andrew Kaneb who helped lead the tennis team to sweet victory. On the crew team it was the tireless oars of David Reno and John Green that helped propel their boats and their team to another league championship while lacrosse fought hard under the indefatigable C.J.Young. These are but few of the names of the fine athletes in the class of 1986, but they serve to prove the point that in this area, as in so many others, the class was rapidly becoming the backbone of.the school. Academics took their toll on us as

well during our fifth form year and there were times when the History Five curriculum seemed out to get us but we didn't really understand what pressure was until that old senior year rolled around. It wasn't supposed to be this way, we told ourselves, with visions of senior beach and graduation presents in our head. But this was the Fall, and before we could glory in the role of graduates, we had to earn it. In addition to all the regular drains on our energies, the college question suddenly exploded and there were all those applications and essays on the meaning of life and why we wanted so badly to matriculate at dear old Harvard. Through all the pressure, and all the hubbub of that final year, however, we kept looking back as well as forward. Only thirty of the original forty two remained; less than half of the graduating class, but we formed the nucleus of a group as diverse as any the school had seen and more. As the year and its attendant social functions moved swiftly on, new friendships were formed and old ones solidified. We began to see the goals that we had striven toward as real things, no longer the worn out

13

phrases of faculty advisors and parents but our immediate and very independent future. Both on and off campus we stuck together in the unspoken bonds of senior year and felt that no class had ever been so great, come so far, looked so promising. After all is said and done, what is there left to say of our life at Belmont Hill? Perhaps only that it was the beginning. We learned so much, from books, from teachers and coaches we respected and who respected us, but more from each other and from the process of becoming a class. Cooperation, respect, hard work; these things don't come from a course, they come from people, and learning from people is what Belmont Hill is all about. There were a lot of fine people there, many of them in the class of 1986.

The Headmaster's Message You may open this yearbook in 1996 before you return to school for your tenth reunion. Maybe in 2011, you will leaf through its pages to make sure you recall the names and faces of people you have not seen for years as you plan to come back to your twenty-fifth reunion. Whenever you open its cover, I hope you will remember with satisfaction and warmth the time that you spent at Belmont Hill. Whenever you return, there will be at school many teachers eager to welcome you back. As you take your leave, let me extend to you a wish I have shared with many Belmont Hill alumni.

18

I wish you an instinct to care when others seem callous or indifferent. I wish you the courage to reflect your caring in your actions. I wish you the success sufficient to your needs and failure to temper that success. I wish you an abundance of joy and sadness enough that you may fully appreciate joy. I wish you friendships that you will cherish and the lonliness that will help you learn who you are. I wish you peace in the world where you live and in the smallest corner of your heart where the truth about you is kept. More I cannot wish you but love, to make all the rest worthwhile.

God grant me the SERENITY to accept what I cannot change, the TENACITY to change what I may, and the GOOD LUCK not to f --- up too often. -Stephen King9. • J6 :if -4 PRIAM c.—c• en night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints In the sand; one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.

Chemistry Hall of Shame-RT 2 at 2 Six Course Spring-Honors (yea once)

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also enticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. "LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have nbticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't urderstand why when I needed you west you would leave me." The LORD replied, "My precious, I.recious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that carried you." . I

I'm talking about the very essence of what it is to be an American. We are different. We have always been different. If we all feel that way the world will once again look on in awe at us, astonished by the miracles of education and freedom, amazed by our re-birth of confidence and hope and progress, and when they are amazed and when it happens we'll be able to say to the world,"well, what did you expect? Volume 33 of THE PANEL took over after another award winning year. Volume 32 walked away from their duties with a first place with special merit prize from the American Scholastic Press Association. The editors vowed to equal this honor. The year proved to be a difficult one: late nights at Belmont Printers, missed deadlines, Panel night mayhem etc. But, the year also proved to be a lot of fun: the joke issue (and ensuing uproar), the aborted and then re-planned New York trip. Most of all, the editors of volume 33 left behind a tradition of fun and Panel night hors d'oeuvres.

Peter Shepard Charlotte Tillman John Viola Jen Wheeler Gardi Willis Marcus Woolcott

GLEE CLUB & B-FLATS

129

LYCEUM This year's debating club has exhibited much enthusiasm and interest, in fact it was often the case that more debators were willing to participate than there were spots available for them. Although the team as a whole did not perform all that well there were many outstanding, individual performers. Perhaps its best performance all year was at the Roxbury Latin Tournament, an all novice debate. In this event the excellence of some young debators such as Jon Golden and Andy Muldoon was demonstrated. Later in the year the club held the successful Belmont Hill debate, in which ten schools participated. Although many veteran debators such as Jarrett Williams, Sean Carney and Tim Burke were unable to participate because of conflicting debates, many novice debators were there to hone their skills, most notable, Seth Narins and Doug Hampers. In addition, many Belmont Hill debators, especially Andy Boxer, Chris Wiseman, Craig Bergstrom, and seniors Karl Benedict and Larry Tosi, were able to see the other side of debating by judging this and other events. The final debate of the year was the Deerfield extemporaneous debate, in which Larry Tosi and Craig Bergstrom won all three of their debates and Larry placed second overall in speaker points. This proved to be a rebuilding year, for the club had only two returning seniors, Karl Benedict and Larry Tosi. Yet in the novice debates fine talent was displayed and next year's leadership under Chris Wiseman and Andy Boxer promises to be good. The talent of next year's club should be excellent, thanks to the many opportunities given to the novice debators to hone their skills in this year's club. A final word of thanks should go to faculty advisor Mr. Zanetta for his help in organizing the club.

YEARBOOK

131

MODEL U.N. The model United Nations Club had a very successful year despite an abbreviated schedule. Due to some unfortunate happenings at the Harvard U.N. in 1984, this years group was unable to attend the conference. This limited the agenda to just the Yale Conference in February. What was missing in quantity was made up in quality, however, as the twenty Belmont Hill delegates made a strong showing at Yale. The group consisted of nine seniors, seven juniors and four sophomores and was chaperoned by Mr. MacDonald. Belmont Hill represented Lebanon, Ecuador, Austria, Nicaragua and The Netherlands on the various committees. It was the juniors who received the most recognition for their work, as Ted Hamann, Joe Dabringer, Bill Bettmann all won awards for outstanding work in their committees. This was more awards than the school had won in the the past two years combined. The contributions of the seniors, however, can not be ignored. Although he did not recieve formal recognition for his efforts, there are few people that will soon forget Albert Price's "terror for bananas" speech. And outside the committee meetings the seniors really showed their leadership. The excellent work of the sophomores and juniors show that Belmont Hill is on its way to reasserting itself as a powerhouse in high school diplomacy.

132

OUTING CLUB If nothing else, this was a colorful year for the Outing Club. A dozen newcomers joined the seasoned veterans and the group was pulled together by a series of mishaps that unified us as nothing else could. Long after the mountains are forgotten and the village names fade into dim memories, the accidents will remain in the minds of all of us. December 19, 1985 was certainly the climax (though nadir might possibly be the more appropriate term) as a house burned (a design defect in the chimney), a car crashed (a surprise patch of ice) and Mr. Downey had the joy of explaining it all - long distance, thank God - to the respective owners and parents of the property and people involved."Never again! My stars are crossed!" he has been heard to mumble to this day,and do you know? We think he means it. Other misfortunes were less calamatous, but just as interesting. How do tire blowouts, leaving members at service stations by mistake and getting traffic violations sound to you as a way to have a good time? Interestingly enough, the events of the year did bring us together as a group. When you messed up, you messed up with friends, and when something horrendous happened, it happened to all of you. One Panel headline read "Outing club achieves camaraderie", well, that was just what did happen. Perhaps overshadowed by the mishaps, the trips themselves were, nonetheless, quite interesting in their own right. Club president Ted Hamann took special pride in trying to keep the trips exciting (perhaps he should try a little less next year). In this light, the Liberty and Flume trip was the most exhilarating. It included the scaling of a mile long slide and some truly spectacular views. Other trips included hiking in Vermont, climbing Mt. Watchuset, a three day winter camping trip, biking and crosscountry skiing. All in all, it has been a year to remember if not to repeat, and the spirit lives on. With a little refinement, 1986-1987 could be the best year yet.

Like many of the seasons before, the team "turned it on and then turned it off" as coach Sullivan would warn us not to. We say "us" because only those affiliated with football will read this, and we believe that this piece should be written for us, rather than bore ourselves by giving a mundane play by play account of the season. Will we be remembered by the coaching staff, especially by Coach Dewar, any more than teams of previous years? We were a different lot. At preseason we were confidently striving for the 7-0 record. At Milton we overcame our own laziness, and drove the ball down their throats in the second half. That cannot be denied. But didn't we expect to win? We became overconfident. Why did Dan Curtin have to get hurt before Nobles? We won't ever forget Art Boland's sentiments before the game which are so vivid in our minds, it seems impossible to forget. Did the weather beat us? Nobles did. We played our hearts out. No one used the loss of Danny as an excuse, at least no one who we may identify with did. Muddy Art sitting with Dan in the locker room for an hour after the game. Men cried there. The see-saw always. We killed St. Marks. We physically ran them over, yet we lost. Is that possible? The dark cloud in the silver lining. Paul Popeo got speared. Out for the sea140

son. We saw it, he was speared. Would we have gone 6-1 with him healthy? This question doesn't exist. Disregard it. Would have and should have don't exist. Did BB & N and Groton beat us or did we lose to them? Who did we blame for these losses? Each other individually? No. We were disgraceful. We know that. Coach Kimball wanted a streak, right? We were lost for these two weeks, but we would gracefully learn what a good streak is. We beat Middlesex and GDA. We established the momentum early and never lost it. Bill Cotter was hurt. His last game was over long before. Offensive linemen Dave Parrot and Mike Drucker opened up all the holes. Defensive linemen Pete Trevisani, Scott Bacon, and Art Boland plugged the holes up. John Skinner ran for 100 yards. Dave Smith caught a TD pass from Any Kaneb. Greg Supple intercepted a ball. Mark Driscoll booted the cover off the ball. Popeo recovered. These seniors then made their grand exits. We shared our feelings among ourselves, opened ourselves up. 4-3 is a winning record, as we are winners. The coaches know this, we know this. We have a streak to build on, with Milton being the first victim. We will all be there. Some of us won't be playing. But we can watch and remember. It seems the good moments become great memories and the bad moments fade away.

VARSITY SOCCER A somewhat disappointing start changed it's course. . . This year's varsity soccer team combined youth, leadership and pride to establish a 11-3-1 record and secure a third place finish in the I.S.L. A somewhat disappointing start changed it's course and led to eight straight victories at the end of the season. Belmont Hill travelled to Roxbury Latin for its season opener and walked away with a 1-1 tie with the first goal of the season scored by sophomore Tim Kelly. A 4-0 loss to St. Sebastian's cast a dark shadow over the team's high hopes, yet the next two games proved that Belmont Hill had the talent with easy wins over Milton and St. George's. On a rainy Belmont Hill Day the team provided a 3-0 shutout against a shocked Nobles team. Brad Bates and Tom Hanson led the scoring drive with a pair of goals and fouryear veteran C.J. Young iced the victory with a powerful inside shot. In the next two games the team lost to first place St. Paul,'s and to St. Mark's on a penalty shot. For the last eight games Belmont Hill initiated a prevent defense led by Ted Schoenharl, Tom Baker, Doug Oppenheimer, and goalie Aaron Caplan, and allowed only 5 goals. The offense led by C.J.Young and Cort Gwon started their goal scoring spree with 4 shutouts in a row: Thayer, Groton, Lawrence, and B.B.

144

& N. Unforunately for the team, sophomore Tim Kelly hurt his leg and was unable to complete the season. However, halfback Tom Sullivan returned in full spirit after a preseason injury, scoring a goal against a top ranked Lawrence team. Probably the highlight of the season was a 2-1 victory over second place Brooks. C.J. Young went coast to coast to score the first goal. However, Brooks bounced back in the second half with a goal on a long direct kick. With 20 seconds left in the game Tim Long lofted a beautiful corner kick which bounced around the outside of the goal, and with one second left, Scott Barringer pumped

Special performances on offense in these three games were given by Andy Diamond, Reese Genser, Tom Hanson, Barrett Coakley, and David Browne and on defense, Andy Hauck, Chris Awtrey (12th man award winner), Larry Tosi, Ted Marple, and Mike Udris who looks to be a promising starting goalie next year. Credit cannot be given to the team without recognizing the outstanding knowledge and leadership provided by coaches Seeley and Burt, and the great efforts of trainer Joe Dabringer and manager Dan Margulis. Cort Gwon, C.J. Young, Ted Schoenharl, and Aaron Caplan were selected by coaches in the league for the Massachusetts team, while C.J. Young was selected for the All New England team. With twelve returning varsity players, next year's team looks to have a successful season under captain Scott Barringer.

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY With heads adorned, B.H.S. thundered across the muddy fields. . . This year's cross country team had a tough act to follow. Rumor had it that the team would not be able to equal last year's impressive season. However, strong man talent displayed itself, and the team pulled together, compiling a 10-1 record and placing second in both the I.S.L. and New England Championships. The season started right after Labor Day. The preseason long-distance runs showed the team who had trained over the summer. After the annual Charles River Run through Cambridge, the team began to take on shorter distances in preparation for the big Milton Weekend.Speedwork was done a new way this year. Because of the building of the new baseball diamond, the B.H.S. course had to be modified. Thus, the all new Benedict lap was instituted. This was a half mile run up around Speare House and back down around the soccer field. It also provided the team with a new obstacle, the Stewart's lawn furniture. In addition to the new Benedict lap, other methods were created to keep practices interesting. There was another half-mile loop that included the Headmaster's hill. Who can forget the videotaping of the team early in the season? Mr. Zamore, driving Mr. Kirby's car, drove in front of the team, with Eric Levine riding shotgun, holding the camera. Finally, another first this season were the scavenger hunts on Thursdays. The first was an orienteering challenge to Waltham to get red flags. Then there was a run to Belmont Center to collect railroad spikes and a tool brochure. Then there was another orienteering adventure, the now famous "cider run". Back again to Belmont Center and Cushing Square. Not only was there a scavenger hunt, searching for items like the tracing of a ladies heel and the phone number of a beautiful woman, but also a hunting we did go for red, yellow and green balloons, but not blue! Special tribute must be made here to Peter "Flip" Landau and Lester

148

Lien, for always going the longest way and getting lost, and don't forget Greeno and the swamp rats. It wasn't only the exciting practices of Mr. Zamore that made this year exciting, it was also the success of the varsity team. This team consisted of eight members. Captain Joe Cannistraro and Rick Kassassieh led the team by running in the front of the pack, always dependable for two of the top three spots. The rest of the pack keyed off these front runners. This pack included Captain Jon Bernheimer, Karl Benedict, Adam Thornborough, Marty Keane, Matt Siegel and Marcus Collier. Adam was the most consistent of the pack, never having a really bad race and always coming in strong. Marty Keane was the surprise, coming into his own from number 1 J.V. runner at Milton to the number 3 varsity man at the I.S.L. Championships. The Commander was able to stick with these guys for part of the race and proved to be a strong fifth man. Jon remained consistent, sticking with the Commander, despite a nagging hamstring pull that occured halfway into the season. Matt Siegel and Marcus battled it out for that seventh man position, each running about half the races. Matt came on strong toward the end of the season and ran with the varsity during the championships. Although the season was marred by a loss to Milton during the first meet, Belmont bounced back with new fire, crushing a lackluster Nobles team in the mud. They went on to beat St. Mark's in a very close race. The rest of the season Belmont had the upper hand, finishing 10-1. After such a successful regular season, the team had high championship hopes. The I.S.L. Championships were held at Middlesex. The ground was wet, but B.H.S.'s spirit was high. Adam Thornborough brought the team to life with colored hair spray. Despite an awesome showing by B.H.S.,(Joe (3), Rick (4), Marty (14), Adam (17), and Karl (29), it wasn't enough to beat St. Mark's, who had recently recovered their injured captain. Thus B.H.S. took second, a sweet revenge on Milton. At the New England's in Suffield, Belmont looked to revenge St. Mark's. It was a challenging course full of vertical hills, cow dung and sinkholes, yet Belmont Hill attacked it. Again, although there were many exciting races, Adam placed eleventh and Matt thirty-first, Belmont could still not overcome a very strong St. Mark's team and took second. All and all the team had a very successful season and all the seniors on the team were happy with such an exciting performance.

The 1985-86 Belmont Hill Varsity Basketball team achieved one of its best records in recent years, compiling a 10-5 I.S.L. record and a 12-6 overall mark. When the team lost star player Kyle Delaney to graduation, it knew that it would have to develop into more of a team if it hoped to be successful this season, and that is exactly what the team became, a team. The team started off its season on a very high note, as it defeated Nobles 50-45 in a thrilling game. The lead changed hands many times, but near the end of the game, Belmont Hill put on a spurt which was helped greatly by the newly found student cheering section. Junior center Andy Shaw,21 points and 11 rebounds; cocaptain David Smith, 11 pts. and 8 assists; and Senior forward Andy Kaneb, 8 rbs. and 4 steals, provided the necessary leadership for this game and for the rest of the entire season. The team then traveled to the Rivers Holiday Tournament at which it came up with a 2-1 record and a

third-place finish. In the first game, the team defeated a very weak Middlesex squad 44-29. Belmont Hill was led once again by Shaw, with 19 pts. and 10 rbs., and Junior forward Leon Palandjian, with 11 pts. and 8 rbs. In the next game Belmont Hill lost to the eventual tournament champion, Thayer Academy, 66-56. The team played a strong game, but a run by Thayer in the second period proved to be the big blow in the game. In the game for third place, Belmont Hill defeated Milton 45-38. Palandjian led the way with 14 pts. and 7 rbs. The third-place finish was one of the best finishes for Belmont Hill in many years. Two of the most exciting victories of the season came in overtime against Rivers and Roxbury Latin. It took two overtimes for Belmont Hill to defeat a very strong Rivers team 55-54. Big performances were turned in by Shaw, with 20 pts. and 11 rbs., and Junior guard Bob Chicosky, with 12 pts., 4 steals, and 4 assists. There is no doubt that the 7974 triple-overtime victory against

Roxbury Latin was the most exciting game of the 1985-86 season. Belmont Hill trailed several times in each of the overtimes, but the team would not be denied. Andy Kaneb hit many clutch outside shots to save the team from defeat in each of the overtimes. Each of the starters scored in double figures, and Junior John Kelly provided the strength off the bench with 11 rebounds. The team suffered a few disheartening losses that greatly dampened its hopes of gaining a berth in the New England Prep School Tournament. The first of the losses came at the hands of Lawrence Academy in overtime, 53-46. Belmont Hill was completely outplayed in the overtime session, failing to score a single point. Bob Chicoski turned in a good perfromance with 17 points. The next of the losses was to Governor Dummer by a score of 65-49. Belmont Hill played a very strong first half but was outplayed in the second half. Governor Dummer's height proved to be the decisive factor in this game. The last of the losses came at the hands of the eventual league champion, Thayer Academy. Andy Kaneb provided the spark throughout the game to help Bel-

Belmont Hill ended its most successful season in years with a victory over Milton, 52-49. Co-captains David Smith and Michael Drucker and the rest of the Seniors provided the necessary leadership that enabled the team to do as well as it did. The Seniors would like to thank Mr. Bertelsen for the dedication that he has shown to the basketball program and wish good luck to Andy Shaw, next year's captain, and the rest of the 1986-87 basketball team. 159

Right from the opening face-off of the 1985-86 season, the boys on the varsity hockey squad knew that the pressure was on. The burden was upon them to follow in the footsteps of the previous year's championship team and the season looked long and tough. The solid defeat of the team from Thayer helped put things in a good light, but the next game's lackluster win over Exeter should have sounded some warning signals; was the team overconfident this early in the season? I.S.L. play began badly for Belmont Hill with the team losing the opener to Lawrence, and a somewhat sobered squad left school just before Christmas break to do battle in the annual free-for-all known as the Lawrenceville Tournament. Though Taft and Deerfield yielded to the boys from the Hill, Nichols proved to be the team of the day and Belmont settled for a third place in the tournament. Just one game separated the Lawrenceville Tournament from a new tournament in Buffulo, N.Y. and this proved to be a 160

hearteningly solid win over St. Sebastian's; 8-1. Again, the wreath of victory was not to come home from Buffulo, however, as Nichols school edged in as the winner once again, leaving the Belmont team improved but frustrated at second place. Back at home, it was time to start showing the coach what the team was capable of, and a string of five straight victories culminated in an exciting and hard won overtime game against the team that had started them off on the wrong foot so long before; Lawrence Academy. The lure and the jinx of the road were to strike the team again and the Kent tournament took its toll as a third unsuccessful toad show for what was by all other standards a positive and effective team. Three victories in a row put the bloom back in their cheeks and it looked for awhile as though the league championship at least was sewed up. Then came the heartstopping losses at the end of the season, two of them in a row. Teams from B.B. + N. and St. Paul's played through and left Belmont behind Thayer in the stand-

ings. The final confrontation had to happen, and happen it did with the boys from the Hill rising to the occasion and finishing the season after victories over Thayer and Milton in a dead tie for the Keller league championships. Yet another tournament loomed large on the horizon, but coach Martin declined the invitation to the New Englands for the good of the team and thus ended the year on a solid footing. Champions once again, the Belmont Hill Hockey team laid down the weight they had carried this year. Their records were impressive: 11 and 6 for a league record and five members of the team picked for all league honors; C.J. Young, David Browne, Todd Copeland, Dave Pergola and Will Averill. Captain C.J. Young turned in a record of 40 goals scored in one season and was actually bested by one of his own teammates at 42 - David Browne. This was the ninth time in the last decade that Belmont Hill has been on the pennant as the winning team in the Keller division. UM

The 1985-1986 Belmont Hill squash team can undoubtedly be called one of the best in the history of the school. Not losing a match all year, the five member team ran away with the Independent School League title as well as claiming victory at the interscholastic tournament. Jon Bernheimer, Tim Long, Aaron Caplan, Alan DerKazarian, and Reese Genser dominated opponents all year under the reputable coaching of George Seeley. Each member of the team clearly distinguished himself at crucial moments during the season. At the number five position, first year letterman Reese Genser improved drastically every time he stepped on the court and recorded an undefeated season for the team by saving victory at Andover Academy. Tied at two matches each, the decicing match pitted the Belmont Hill player against a top-twenty nationally-ranked player. Genser came through with a convincing 3-1 conquest to avoid a mid-season scare. Alan DerKazarian, at number four, defeated his opponent from Exeter Academy on the last outing of the season. As with Andover, the score was tied at two apiece when the

final match began. DerKazarian jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, taking the opener in a tie-breaker. The Exeter player made things interesting by winning the third, until DerKazarian closed it out in front of a capacity crowd. Aaron Capaln stunned the field at the interscholastic tournament by reaching the semi-finals in the number three bracket. Playing the best squash of his career at Belmont Hill, Caplan gave Belmont Hill the needed points to take the interscholastic crown. This performance highlighted consistent play throughout the season at the number three position. At number two, newcomer to the school Tim Long brought his enviable raquet skills to Belmont Hill from Connecticut. Long compiled the only undefeated personal record on the team as he moved through opponents, losing just one game in all his matches. One of the two nationally-ranked junior players at Bel-

166

mont Hill, Long was ranked the number three player in the entire I.S.L. as a number two team player. Needless to say, Long came through for the team in every match, easing the pressure on the other members. Jon Bernheimer filled the number one position on the team for the second year in a row. A varsity letterman at Belmont Hill for six years, the list of his accomplishments goes on endlessly. Nationally-ranked in the top two or three every year since age 12, Bernheimer put Belmont Hill on the squash map. Named the number two player in the I.S.L., Bernheimer lost to only one opponent in interscholastic play. He too came through for the team on a regular basis and provided the encouragement for the team as a second year captain. Teams in the future will look to come close to doing what this year's team did-but will be hard pressed to equal their accomplishments.

The 1985-86 season marked the first year that the Belmont Hill Alpine Ski Team did not win the league title. With six of the top ten skiers graduating, this year's team lacked the depth and strength of previous years. Although there were strong performances by several of the team members, the lack of consistency proved to be the greatest problem. The first race of the season was held two days after the end of winter vacation. With only one day of training, the team travelled to Blue Hills with confidence in winning another league title. Unfortunately, this was not the case as the top three seeds from Belmont Hill fell and were disqualified, or finished with times well behind those of the leaders. Chris Moon, Carl Eldh, freshman Rod Moon, and Mike Liles finished sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively; and captured second place for Belmont Hill. The second race was held at Nashoba Valley, and, again, the top seeds had difficulty with the course even though they were racing on their "home" slope. Strong perfor-

mances were put in by new team member Peter Denise and Mike Liles, but Belmont Hill finished in a disappointing third place. At this point, the chances of winning a ninth consecutive league title were very slim. Nevertheless, the team looked to finish strongly in the final race at Blue Hills. The last race of the season was the closest of the three, with only two points separating first and second place, and nine points separating second and third place. Unfortunatly, Belmont Hill came up short, finishing in third place behind Milton and Nobles. Top finishers for Belmont Hill were Carl Eldh, Chris Moon, and Peter Denise, placing seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively. Close behind were co-captain Marco DiMare and Chris Mecray, taking eleventh and twelfth. For the second year in a row, Belmont Hill skiers participated at the Bay State Games in Western Massachusetts at Jiminy Peak. Chris Moon and Carl Eldh, with their seventh place tie in the individual standings, qualified for the Games, and tray-

elled with late entry Chris Mecray and qualifiers from Nobles to the Games. With the graduation of only one team member, co-captain Chris Monaco, next year's squad hopes to dominate the I.S.L. and regain the title under the leadership of next year's co-captains Marco DiMare and Carl Eldh, and with the strong skiing of returning lettermen.

The 1985-1986 ski season held few surprises for the strong B.H.S. ski team. Again, this year, the ski team finished eleven points in front of their close rival, Middlesex. The Junior Varsity team raced against themselves. They placed first, 82 points ahead of Groton's J.V. Karl Benedict captained this year's team to three wins out of four races. Brad Bates and Peter Althausen continually placed First and second for B.H.S. The ski conditions were much better this year than in in previous years but still well below those the team encountered in Waterville Valley at the annual Ski Camp. This season's camp was packed with skiing and good times. Long nights and exhausting practices highlighted the weekend. Some of the new additions to this year included skating skis. It was discovered that Peltonen skating skis do break on highways when ski-racks aren't closed. Joe Cannistraro and Mr. White earned their siver medals at the Canadien Ski

Marathon. They did this insane thing while carrying a twelve-pound backpack. The marathon is 100 miles long spread over two days of skiing. Lester Lien and Karl Benedict both completed 7 sections of the whole course. Adam Thornbrough and Mike Udris had to stop because of frosty fingers and toes. Mr. Bates and Mr. Kirby lead strenuous practices that helped everyone on the team enjoy a successful season. There were eight letter winners at the season's end. Next year's captain is Adam Thornbrough. Adam's plan for next year: "WIN!" The team looks forward to several feet of snow and many victories to follow in the 1986-1987 season.

This year's wrestling team, under the leadership of M.V.P. Steve Meade and Ted Schoenharl, had a rough season, winning only one meet. As expected, the season proved to be a rebuilding year, with a lot of the younger wrestlers holding spots on the Varsity. The team was composed of five seniors, three Juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen. With the loss of Eric Levine, the team was forced to begin each match losing by six points. Through all this, the wrestlers persevered and ended the season favorably at the Graves Kelsey Tournament. At the 110 class, Joel Bines performed admirably. Although he didn't win a match during the regular season, Joel stuck with it and came in fifth in the Graves. Joel is sure to improve and he is looking forward to proving himself next year. Mike "The Burner" Byrnes stuggled all year to keep his weight at 121 pounds. Mike had a tough season, winning no meets, but he was one of the hardest workers on the team. If he brings his good attitude

to the team next year, the other wrestlers may only benefit from Mike's prescence. At 127, Co-Captain Steve Meade had a great season. He placed third in the Graves, and was one of the few people to win any matches for us this year. Steve was totally committed to the team and he deserved the M.V.P. trophy for the time and effort he gave, even though the team was not very successful. At 127 Bob "Speed Bump" Agredo fared well during the season. He had one of the better records on the team and he won some key matches. Next year's Captain, John Konevich, wrestled at 138. John pinned three opponents and hopes to turn the tide of his team by individually destroying anyone who crosses his path next year. Rob Demars wrestled at 145 with moderate success. Unfortunately for him, 145 was one of the strongest division in the league, but he fought onward and won some matches he wasn't supposed to win. At 152, freshman Mike Gulesar-

ian did win a match. Mike plans to attend camp this Summer and come back next year in more of a position to help the team. Bo Wilmer was at 160, and didn't perform as well as he probably wished to. But the competition he faced here was far superior to any he'd have seen in the middle school. At 167, sophomore sensation Pete Protopapas had a rough season. He kept his weight down and won a key match at St. Marks. At 177, Co-captain Ted Schoenharl won all his regular season matches and finished second at the Graves. Ted was definately an inspirational member of the team and will be next to impossible to replace. Most improved wrestler Geoff Stewart wrestled unlimited this year. Through chipped teeth and other hardships did yon Stewie persevere to be one of the more revered members of the team. Thanks are given manager Jon Burt and to parents, especially Mrs. Meade and Mr. Konevich, who took time from work to watch their sons perform. And thanks also to Mr. Linberg who put up with us all year. 176

If one were to have watched the first game of the 1986 Baseball Season, one would have come away with the feeling that the team from Belmont Hill played well but not quite well enough. This game set the tone for the rest of the season as the team struggled all year long to score runs when they were most needed. In the second game of the season at Roxbury Latin, Belmont managed only one hit and one unearned run in the process of making a good Latin pitcher look great. The bats came alive somewhat in game #3 as Belmont scored 9 runs en route to their first fictory. Gov. Dummer was the victim in this first home game as things were finally looking up. The first road victory came in Concord, N.H. as St. Paul's fell to the pitching of Scott Bacon and the hot bat of Shortstop George Humann. The following Saturday, Middlesex fell victim to an offensive carnage as Belmont finally scored more than five runs in a game. Twenty had scored before it was over, every

starter reached base at least once with seniors George Humann, Mike Drucker, and Chris Connelly leading the Hit Parade. Belmont managed 11 runs a week later at St. George's which was more than enough to overcome the weak offence of St. George's. Senior Scott Bacon pitched in his sixth consecutive game, while juniors Will Averill, David Browne and sophomore Jim Coady did the job at the plate. A disappointing 3-2 loss to first placed St. Sebastian's ended the Hill's longest winning streak of the season. The lack of execution (which is needed so much in a close game) along with "untimely" hitting caused the 3-2 loss with the only bright spot being Bacon's 7th consecutive appearance on the mound. The offense came back against Lawrence Academy in a game which will be remembered by the near-ejection from the game of half the Lawrence starting lineup, including the coach. After the dust had cleared, it was Belmont 11, Lawrence 6, Ejections 1. 183

A victory over Milton Academy would have been big as they were tied for first with St. Sebastian's. This one went down to the wire thanks to some great defense from Tray Hardin and George Humann. Milton won it in the bottom of the tenth on a bases-loaded single, as Belmont now stood with a 5-4 record. In the next game, Nobles fell thanks to a "clutch" walk in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded. Sophomore Trey Hardin had started the seventh inning rally with a base hit to left, and this time Belmont won a "Barn Burner". Against Rivers, Senior Bob Leary played a mean third base preserving a 5-3 "squeaker". Sophomore Ted Madden took this opportunity to put on a base running clinic proving his theory that if you just keep running, they'll throw it away. Brooks fell next thanks to Mike Drucker's towering triple to right-center and David Browne's drives to right field. Also it should be added that Bob Leary became the first player in recent memory to lead off an inning with a base hit, steal two bases and wind up on first base. The best description of the game at St. Mark's was that St. Mark's was determined to win. This game was a defensive showcase with great plays by Mike Drucker, Trey Hardin, and George Humann being overshadowed by a St. Mark's outfield which played "unconscious" robbing Belmont hitters on at least three different occasions. Senior Chris Connelly gave up the game winner on a home run in the bottom of the tenth. Final St. Mark's 6, Belmont 5. Next was Jim Coady day, as next year's team captian stymied Groton on just two hits and no runs for 1968's only shutout. Belmont 1, Groton 0. The season ended the same way it began, with a disappointing loss to BBN, some costly errors and more "untimely" hitting cost Belmont an 8-5 decision, finishing the semi-successful 9-6 season. 184

The 1986 Belmont Hill tennis team has succeeded in achieving the goal it set for itself at the onset of the season — winning the private school league while remaining undefeated. However, in many ways, it was a disappointing season for the team. For a team which thrives on competition, it was not truly challenged by any of its opponents during the season. In its 17 matches, the team averaged a loss of only two sets per match. Furthermore, the team spent more time warming up for these matches than it did playing them. Perhaps the key staple, aside from the intangibles, to the tennis team's success was the performance of its doubles. Even on the rare days when the team members were not playing in singles, they managed to turn in solid doubles performances. Doubles is what turned the Milton match from dead even into an easy victory. In fact, a few weeks ago, Andrew Kaneb and Jon Krane teamed up to win the Interscholastic Division A Championships, without losing a single set. Another key ingredient in the ten-

nis team's success was the constant pursuit of stroke perfection. Each day, Mr. Myers spent a majority of the practice time preaching the Basics of shot production to the team members. Mr. Myers stood for nothing short of perfection throughout the entire season. His simple philosophy was "do it until you get it right, and then do it a thousand times more." One day, after a long practice, Mr. Myers in utter frustration said,"My lord, it was almost as hard to teach Genser the running forehand passing shot as it was to teach Dick Stockton the backhand drop volley." In retrospect, the 1986 season was very fulfilling for the tennis team. The entire team truly gelled into a large, tight-knit family. It is sad that five of this year's lettermen are graduating. In the words of coach Myers,"I really wish I had these guys for a few more years."

The crew team this year enjoyed a very successful season by compiling an overall record of 19-0-1. Coach Tim Wood showed that last years performance was not just a fluke, keeping the team working hard and winning races. The season started off with the Ducey Cup against a strong BB & N squad. The first boat race had been much anticipated all year by both the coaches and the oarsmen, along with many college coaches looking for rowers to build their programs. The race turned out to be as exciting as all thought it would be, the first boat winning by two seconds and breaking the coarse record of 3:52 by 11/2 seconds. The only scar on a perfect season occured in the third boat race against BB & N in which the race was called a tie by the officials. The rowers expressed their anguish at the fact that they had not won and pledged to work extra hard through the rest of the year. The crew's second race of the year was against Nobles on the Charles. All boats rowed well and each came away with easy victories. Coach Wood's brother Ned, the coach of

Nobles, complimented the team on its victory and left, beaten by his brother for the second straight year. Coach Wood,in an unorthodox decision, decided to take the hot first boat down to the Founder's Day Regatta. The boat finished a disappointing second to Groton but came away feeling they had not rowed their best race. The team next traveled up to Brooks to take on a weak Brooks program. All four came away with victories, the speedy second boat getting the best time of the day. The regular season was wrapped up at St. Mark's with a four boat sweep again, the first boat pulling out a crowd pleaser, coming from behind to win by 1/2 of a second. Next stop was Lake Quinsigamond. The team went in with the second, third, and fourth boats all seeded first and the first boat seeded second for the New Englands. Though the first boat had a disappointing race and finished third to Groton and St. Mark's(Groton set a coarse record), the second, third and fourth boats all won their finals impressively. Due to the speed, strength, and depth shown

191

by the crews in the early season, the decision was made in early May that the crew will compete at the Henley Royal Regatta in England this July in the Princess Elizabeth Cup for schoolboy eights. The first and second boats combined in an eight are excited and ready to take on the challenge.

The 1986 Track Team, under the leadership of coaches Kirby, Fisher, and Bickford, and tri-captains Joe Cannistraro, Lester Lien, and Bill Egan, showed continued sucess and strength in its program. Its final record; a respectable 6 wins and 3 losses. Having lost many of its sprinters, Danahy, Okurowski, and Popeo, only to name a few, this year's team was forced to seek new talent. New relay combinations were drawn and speed trials were held early in the season. Though the annual Exeter Relays had been cancelled, Coach Kirby managed fix a scrimmage with Arlington Catholic. The Hillies rode easily on toward victory, showing great strength in the field as well as the running events. Yet, the tides would soon turn, a storm brewing to strike Belmont Hill hard. Amidst the harsh, cold, raw rain, Belmont Hill kept pace with its scrappy opponent, Thayer, the winning performances recorded by Skinner in the long and triple jumps, Egan in the javelin, Cannistraro in the 800m. and 1500m. As expected, the short dis-

tance events brought the most trouble. By the day's end, on account of the miserable weather and two major rule disputes, Belmont was sent home with its first loss, though the margin remained small. The Hill rebounded against a fairly weak St. George's team, showing continued depth in the long distance and weight events, and new talent in the short distance and the pole vault. Newcomers Ted Sullivan and Marco Dimari proved to be valuable members in those events, reaping seconds and even firsts for Belmont. As usual, the perenial powerhouse Milton handed its opponent another loss. Despite the loss, the track team gained more and more experience, learning from its mistakes and improving on its strengths. St. Pauls provided the Hill with a well matched challenge. Yet, despite the wins from Egan in the javelin, Cannistraro in the 1500, Thornbrough in the 800, Supple in the hurdles, and gutsy efforts by Skinner in the long and triple jump, Dimare in the pole vault, and Sullivan in the 100 and 200, Belmont lost.

195

By mid-season, the clouds had cleared, and the Belmont Hill track team set its course on victory. The following three victories against Portsmouth Abbey and Tabor Academy twice were most satisfying and well deserved, boosting the team's record to 5-3. With five victories and two extremely close losses, Blemont Hill sent 16 of its best athletes to the New England Championship meet with high hopes. Among the twenty-two teams, seveal with post-grads, Belmont Hill placed a respectable sixth, managing to score more points than any Belmont Hill track team in past years. Greg Supple led the team in points by placing fifth in the 200, fourth in the 110 high-hurdles, and third in the intermediate hurdles. Joe Cannistraro, placing a school record breaking third in the 3000 and fifth in the 1500, and Bill Egan, placing sixth in the javelin and third in the discus, followed close behind. Other highlights included Ted Sullivan's sixth place finish in the 100, Marco Dimare's fifth in the pole vault, Bob Chicoski's sixth in the high jump, Todd Copeland's sixth's in the discus, and Rich Kassissieh's fifth in the 3000. Having planned their practices thoughtfully and carefully, Coach Kirby led his team into the Independent School League Championships strong, refreshed, and eager. Placing in even more events, Belmont Hill finished a wonderful third place, finishing only behind Milton and St. Pauls. To finish off a spectacular season, Belmont Hill romped Gover Dummer Academy. A remarkable year!! Special thanks to coaches Kirby, Fisher, and Bickford, and all the parents who supported the team. Good luck next year.

The 1986 LAX team learned to overcome its second half problems and finished with the best record in the school's history. It beat most of the traditional powerhouses. The season began very well. There was a strong sense of enthusiasm going into double sessions. Mr. Treddenick was sick for this week so the seniors led the practices. On that Saturday, the team headed down to Tabor to play in a tournament. In the first game, they faced Tabor and lost. In the next game, thay played St. Sebastian's to a tie. In the final game, they beat P.C.D. who had destroyed them the year before. The coach was excited about the quality of the team. Having played without some of its better players and not having had any real practice in a week, they fared well. Coach Tred had confidence in the team and a desire to win flowed through the team. Coach Treddenick decided to employ a zone defense, believing that the team had the personnel to do extremely well with it. It proved it-

self in the first two games as the team handled Rivers and Lawrence quite nicely. The real test was yet to come however. Beating Nobles and St. George's, they finished the week with a respectable record of 5-1. The next game was a disappointing loss to a high powered Roxbury Latin team. The team took the loss in stride and prepared for Milton. They won easily though the score showed a close game. Next was St. Paul's, a traditional powerhouse. The defense held St. Paul's to three goals as the offense scored seven. Having faced St. Sebastian's in the pre-season tournament, they were confident about the next game against them as they now had key players who were missing in the first game. Yet, the team was overconfident resulting in a loss. They had to prepare for the rest of the season and learn from their most recent loss. They bounced back and beat Pingree handily. Their next opponent was Brooks. After a tough first half, they came out in the second half inspired by a memorable speech by Coach Hussey.

199

P.C.D. arrived with a small but determined squad. But Belmont was ready for them and won 10-6. On Saturday, the team traveled to Governor Dummer to play in a sweltering hot day. In the first half, the team repeated its performance in the previous game, but played on a higher level in the second half to win. The Belmont squad was tested by Middlesex in an overtime game in which they showed their ability to perform under pressure. In their last game, despite a below-par performance, they defeated BBN. The team ended with a 13-2 record as three players made the all-league team, Tom Sullivan, Paul Hauf, and C.J. Young. Next year's team ought to start where this team left off.

Under the leadership of Coach Walworth and captain Jeff Jacobs, the 1986 golf team produced a solid season. Although winning only fifty percent of their team matches, the squad at times showed flashes of brilliance. Great performances were turned in by virtually every member of the team, which consisted of seniors Jeff Jacobs, Jim Stamatos, Alan Derkazarian, Chris Cataldo, Nick Nicolazzo, juniors Rob Madden, Barrett Coakley and Mike Burns, and freshmen Scott Madden and John Driscoll but it seldom seemed the case that great performances by more than one or two players could happen on any given day. The team opened the season with strong wins over Milton and Rivers. We were off to a great start! As the spring progressed, however, The squad from the Hill seemed to fall into a slump, only managing to garner tie matches even when we were up against markedly weaker opponents such as Nobles and Lawrence Academy. It wasn't until late in the season that the team would regain its

confidence and energy and go out to beat St. Sebastian's and Middlesex with decisive scores. The highlight of the 1986 season came late indeed, and it showed us just what kind of team we really had. The Belmont Hill team came in second at the Interscholastic League Championships by a single stroke! In the individual standings, captain Jeff Jacobs fired a league record 73 to capture the Individual Medalist Award and Rob Madden took the second place honors with a very strong 76. In addition to this duo of award winners, solid rounds were put in by ISL qualifiers Scott Madden, Mike Burns, and Jim Stamatos. Although the team as a whole had some difficulties reaching its goals for the 1986 season, a good foundation has been layed for an even better squad in the near future. The returning lettermen along with co-captains Barrett Coakley and Rob Madden look forward to 1987 with high hopes for strong team and individual performances. In addition to having an excellent group of team members, the 1986

golf team was led by a fine coach. As this is was Coach Walworth's final year, the team would like to thank him for his hard work and leadership, both with this team and throughout his years at Belmont Hill. We wish him the best of luck and are confident that he will have continued success in the next phase of his life. Keep hitting them, Coach!

The sailing team this year enjoyed more than its share of success. Due to expert coaching and strong teamwork the team was able to compile an 11-1 record on the river. At the Mass. Bay State Championship, at the end of the season, the team was able to place first overall (Team Cocaptain Tom Sitzmann won his division and Co-captain Jon Burt placed third in his). The team looks forward to a very strong season next year because this team had no seniors. Tom and Jon, the captains, were both juniors and a host of freshmen and sophomores completed the roster. Unfortunately, the team will be losing the services of

its three-year coach, Mr. Zamore. This is a big loss to the team and will be sorely missed. Mr. Wilson, assistant coach for as many years, will be stepping up to fill those large shoes. Competition will be tough on the river next year and the team will set its sights not only on the Charles, but also to ward those NESSA schools based on the water. Tabor, St. George's, Moses Brown and Portsmouth Abbey have dominated in years past and this team hopes to challenge that dynasty. Many thanks to Mr. Zamore for years of good sailing and good luck to Mr. Wilson.
