Long after Belmont Hill School's Class of 1990 has entered the adult world as its next generation of leaders, Belmont Hill School will continue to grow and change. The faces will change. Buildings will be erected, and some torn down. Courses will be introduced, and some discontinued. But there is a place where you will always know the faculty and students alike. There is a place that is immune to the influence of the hands of time. This place is in the 1990 Sundial. This is Belmont Hill — the way you remember.

DEDICATION
Mr. David 0. Greer We, the Class of 1990, have chosen to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. David 0. Greer. Whether it was in the classroom in his English IV or American Writer's courses, or on the athletic field, where he coached the Fourth Football, Fifth Basketball and JV Baseball teams, Mr. Greer was always an extremely well respected, knowledgeable, honest, fair, and dedicated teacher and coach with a famous sense of humor. Many of us will remember Mr. Greer for his "quiz Gods," which mysteriously appeared before a pop quiz, or for the hundreds of vocabulary words he made his students memorize. Others will remember him for his light-hearted but serious practices, and for his passion for beating the seniors in the annual Senior-Faculty Basketball Game. But all of us will remember Mr. Greer as a diligent teacher, a dedicated Coach, and a true friend. For all this, Mr. Greer, we, the Class of 1990, thank you.

Varsity Cross-Country The 1989 fall Cross-country running season once again proved to be full of success. Led by Coach Zamore and Kirby, the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads went undefeated in all of the regular season meets. The Varsity squad was composed of Captains Mike Schwartz and Marcus Collier, seniors Matt Romney, and Jim McCarthy, juniors Scott Goldkamp, Dough Marple, and Mark Brady, and sophomores Trevor McGill and Chip Loutrel. The junior varsity was made up of Brian Walsh, Michael Hewitt, Gruff Blake, Keith DiBlasi, Mark Villa, Mark Dalaklis, Alex Khan, David Feinlieb, and Billy Hung. Although the team may not have had the raw speed they had benefitted from in previous years, they did have a very strong pack which would dominate the other
teams. As the season progressed through hard work, the team was able to develop more speed and peak at the perfect time, right before the ISL championships at St. Marks. The road to the championships was not an easy ride, the team experienced long-distance running, combined with weekly speed work and grueling hill training. As they were the previous season, Thayer Academy posted the greatest obstacle to the Belmont Hill Squad. Fortunately, the two teams were to square off against one another down in Portsmouth Abbey. Mr. Zamore summed up the race best when he said, "That was the smartest race I think I've ever seen this squad do in the last few years. Your third mile was super!" Belmont Hill handily defeated Thayer with an incredible combined effort from each member
-
of the team. This instilled them with confidence to once again face Thayer and St. Paul's, last year's spoilers in the championships. The climax of the season came as the entire Belmont squad ran excellent races, led by Trevor McGill's stunning second place finish, followed by Matt Romney in fourth, Doug Marple, seventeenth; Jim McCarthy, nineteenth; Chip Loutrel, twenty-first; Scott Goldkamp, twenty-third; and Mike Schwartz in forty-second. The JV/Underclass race was also successful,.won by junior Mark Brady, followed in second by junior Michael Hewitt, and seventh grade phenomenon, Chad Rounds, taking fourteenth place. Junior Alex Khan also had a strong race finishing in seventeenth place. Although the team was excited

from its ISL performance, the New Englands still remained. Bumped up to class "A" from "B" the previous year, the competition was to become much stiffer. The course at Northfield Mt. Hermon, was extremely hilly, and cold wet weather conditions did not help the situation. Nevertheless the team ran solid races, Varsity placing a very respectable fifth among some strong contenders. The Cross-country team changed quite a bit throughout the season, more for the better than worse fortunately, always having fun while still working hard. Although at the beginning of the season, the ISL title seemed a possible but remote goal, the team never gave up in achieving what they desired, and should be proud of their effort. Next year, once again behind the intense dedicated coaching of Mr. Zamore and Mr. Kirby, Belmont Hill should continue its success. — Mike Hewitt

Varsity Football With the start of double-session practices in late August, the 1989 Varsity football season began under the leadership of first-year head coach Kevin Fleming. Installing both new offenses and defenses, Fleming pushed the team to high physical and mental limits in order to produce a successful season. As school rolled around, the double-sessions came to an end, the pre-season began with a bus ride to Brooks School, yielding a 13-8 victory for the visitors. The following week, Dave Morgan and Roxbury Latin came to the Hill, and for the first time in two years, RL did not win, tying a highly emotional and feisty Belmont Hill squad, 0-0. The final pre-season match, versus the Arrows of St. Sebastians, produced a 3-0 loss for Belmont Hill — their first and only loss of the pre-season. The first game of the season, versus Milton Academy, gave a much needed boost to the team with a 17-12 victory. With Mike McHugh powering the running game and Ron Lanzo and Co-Captain Henry Quinlan supporting the stingy defense, Belmont Hill walked off Milton's field with a 1-0 record, much to the delight of the players and coaches.
The next game, the first home match versus Nobles, proved to be a much harder battle for the team. The defense shut down the potent Nobles' offense, limiting the visitors to 6 points in the first half. But on the second half kick-off, Nobles broke through the Hill's special teams and scored a heartbreaking touchdown, boosting the point differential to 14. In the second half, Captain Quinlan exited the game with a neck injury, spurring the offense to score the only Belmont Hill touchdown of the afternoon. Not only did the team lose the game 14-6, they also lost offensive and defensive stalwart Quinlan for the next two crucial games. After the loss to Nobles, the football team travelled to Southboro to face the St. Marks squad. Needing a win to boost the team morale, Belmont Hill played valiantly on both sides of the ball to try to erase a second half deficit of five points, only to come up short by 11 points, losing 18-7. With a record of 1-2, the team looked to Groton to improve to .500, only to come up short again, losing by 13 points, 20-7 at Belmont. Facing a tough and talented Groton offensive line, the Hillies, behind the running of sophomore Greg Callahan and junior Marc
L-4
Deragon, scored a second quarter touchdown with Callahan carrying the ball. But without Quinlan, the defense lapsed during key drives to allow 20 Groton points. At 1-3, the Varsity desperately needed a win versus BB&N. Practice the week before the BB&N game became much more lively than before and a winning attitude engulfed the players, in part due to Quinlan's return to the lineup, and also because of the long standing Belmont Hill — BB&N rivalry. That Saturday, Belmont Hill and Sean O'Brien ruined the Knight's homecoming by handing them a 10-7 loss in the autumn heat and sunshine of Cambridge. O'Brien, with 102 rushing yards, scored all 10 BHS points, including a 65 yard stroll for 6 points, a PAT good for 1, and a 31 yard field goal producing 3 crucial points on the scoreboard. On the defensive side of the ball, Belmont shut down the quick Knights throughout the afternoon, lapsing only once for 7 BB&N points. The team's emotions soared with the win, carrying over to the next week's foe, Middlesex in search of revenge for last year's game. Back at the Hill the following Saturday, the squad proved too much for Middlesex, crushing the visitors with 25 first half points.

After the half break, Fleming gave all the second stringers a chance on the field. Although the back-ups did not score, they twarted the Middlesex starters on defense, shutting them out of the end-zone. The scoreboard read 25-0 at the end of the 48 minute match in favor of Belmont Hill. With a record of 3-3, the team looked ahead to GDA and Todd Dixon in order to boost their record to 4-3. During the final week of practice, the coaching staff geared the entire defense around stopping GDA's super-star, Todd Dixon, in order to give the offense a chance to put the pigskin in the end-zone. The seniors wanted to win their final game in a Belmont Hill uniform, and gave it their all against the visitors. Unfortunately, the Governors, lead by Dixon, scored 28 points to Belmont's 13, masking a courageous and valiant comeback effort by the Hillies late in the game. Inspired by two Tyler Spring interceptions intended for Dixon, junior Jeff Jones sparked the comeback with an interception of his own that he ran back 70 yards for a touchdown. That ignited the offense to begin ruthlessly chipping away at the breathless GDA squad, eyeing the endzone the entire time. But time ran out for BHS, and the team walked off the field with another loss in their hands. As the team mourned the defeat after the final game, Coach Fleming praised them for not giving up and giving the game 100%. "All I can ask for is your best effort, and no one can doubt that you gave it today," he said. With those final words from Coach Fleming, the 1989 Varsity football season came to a close, producing a 3-4 record. The team would like to thank Coaches Fleming, Morris, Gallagher and Sullivan as well as Mr. Waite and Mr. Palmer for their invaluable devotion of time and energy to the team, without which the season could not have been nearly as successful and enjoyable. — Doug Asano

Junior Varsity Football Nobody knew what to expect this year from the JV football team, as this was the first season in more than a decade that the JV was separated from the Varsity football team. Yet, under the direction of Coaches Duncan and Bacon the team, made up of mostly sophomores, looked optimistically upon the six game schedule in front of them. Having five weeks of practice before their first game, the team felt ready for Milton Academy. Something went wrong, however, as
BHS lost a 14-0 lead to lose 16-14. Next came a painful 21-0 defeat, when the team lost linebacker/running back Mike Garrity to a knee injury. A loss to Middlesex the following week brought the squad to a dismal 0-3 start. It was at this point in the season that the team turned it around. The team earned its first victory at the hands of Groton on a 35 yard field goal by Todd Bourdelais. A win at GDA the next week
followed, making a November 8th meeting with rival BB&N the only obstacle between BHS and a 3-3, .500 season. The squad travelled to Cambridge on a cold, rainy day, and emerged victorious 21-6, ending the season with a wild celebration at midfield. The team wishes to thank Coaches Duncan and Bacon for their efforts this season. — Ivan Fernandez

Varsity Soccer Belmont Hill Soccer reached its most glorious year as the team won the ISL Championship and came a game away from winning the New England Championship, losing in a tough final to soccer factory Suffield Academy. This year's season was for the most the realization of several years of anticipation. From the beginning the team had but one goal, to finish first in the ISL. Throughout the season the team displayed a consistently superior level of play, as much a pleasure to watch as it was to experience. With their great leadership, intense concentration, and superior athletic skills, the backs were the foundation of the team, always there to stymie the occasional break-away, or knock out the loose ball. With the job of netminding more than
taken care of by keeper Ben Coughlin, Belmont Hill's stalwart defense was the best in the league, allowing only eight goals in regular season play. Junior wingbacks Bob Carlock and Brian Pompeo always exhibited excellent ball control and passing skills. Stopper Peter Kilmartin and sweeper Ben Davis, All-League selections and the captains, were always there to inspire their teammates to push themselves just a little bit harder. The halfbacks fulfilled both their offensive and defensive roles effectively. Defensively, the midfield was as tough as any around, preventing some teams from even getting anywhere over the center circle. Offensively, the halfbacks kept possession well, and fed their forwards without fail. Chris Russell's toughness, tenaciousness and
intensity were unparalleled on the squad. Wing halfbacks Cole Conlin and Billy Lanagan, with their relentless constructing of play after play, were essential to the success of the team, especially in the close games. Offensively, Belmont Hill executed well, to say the least, tallying forty-six goals over the season. A good work rate and great chemistry were most important in the success of the front line. Not afraid to take a chance, the forwards ran off each other well, and used good judgment in making decisions. Led by ISL "Player of the Year" Bepi Raviola, the forwards came through in tough games. All-League honorable mention went to Senior Jamie Stanzler, and sophomore Peter Rogaris showed the kind of imagination that will make him a

terror to fullbacks in years to come. Jay Fritz and Michael Flynn made a very significant contribution to the team, playing important and effective roles when the starters were tired or hurt. The players who came off the bench were indispensable, showing flashes of greatness in the toughest situations. This was a season the players on the team will never forget. There were great victories, such as the Brooks game, the Milton game, or the Loomis-Chaffee game, which this team will savor for the rest of their lives. There were also great friendships: This was a team of great devotion to the sport, unselfish dedication to the team, and affection for one another. Respect not only for the opponents, but for each other, played an important part in the success of the team. There were a lot of laughs, and even some tears. Coaches Schafer, Goodband, and Fleming were always close to their players, and served as good friends as well as great teachers of the game. the 1989 ISL Champs showed guts, and a lot of passion, and have much to be proud of. — Bepi Raviola

Junior Varsity Soccer This year, the Belmont Hill J.V. Soccer team, under the Tutelage of coaches Brownell, Fast and Priest, finished the season with an 11-2-2 record. The offense, lead by Brendon Monahan, Doug Mills, Jamie Young, and rookie penalty-kicker Ben Kurtz, exhibited an unbelievable array of shots, astounding opposing goalies. Halfbacks Charlie Rosenburger, Steve Stepanian, and Tucker Hansen controlled the midfield with superlative skill. The defense consisted of Co-captains Harold Huang and David Shaff, flanked by Ted O'Connor and Michael Stokes with newcomer Aaron Banner in goal, held the opposition to 22 goals in 15 games compared to Belmont Hill's 47. This season, we were plagued with injury and frustration; however, in the end, we were triumphant. Our season began with four straight wins against Andover, Milton, St. George's and Nobles.
Andover had beaten us in previous years; however, Ben Kurtz shined against his former teammates and defeated Andover 4-3. Milton, our most exciting game of the year, ended in the last thirty seconds when Tuck Hansen scored a goal to put Belmont Hill over the top. St. George's was an easier game, scoring three unanswered goals in the second half; however, Nobles, who cancelled last year, fell to Belmont Hill in a tightly-called game, 1-0. Although we tied the St. Paul's game 2-2, we demonstrated our ability and desire to win, aggressively coming back from a 0-2 first half. The team continually played well, beating Thayer and questionably losing to our adversary Lawrence. Lawrence scored first on a penalty kick; however, we had a chance to tie the game with a penalty shot of our own. Ben Kurtz beautifully placed a shot in the corner, but the referee, unable to see the ball, ruled
it a "missed shot." After a plethora of questionable calls, the scored remained 0-1. At BB&N, Harold Huang, the starting fullback, made his debut in goal, replacing the belated Steve Stephanian. The first time he touched the ball he deflected a shot followed by a tackle which would have made a linebacker proud. Later, Steve arrived to relieve Harold of his goaltender duties and to help his team defeat BB&N. Our final game against GDA ended in a tie; however, it was sparked by great defense and a superb buzzer-beater header by George Mix. Many thanks to our avid supporters, Max and Mrs. Fast, and a special thanks to Coaches Brownell (I've got a wedding to go to), Fast (`Scoopers'), and Priest (Rambo) for making this season the most enjoyable. — David Shaff

Third Football The Freshman football team earned an undefeated season this fall posting a 5-0 record. The season started off with a home victory vs. Fessenden. The game was a runaway from the start and set the tone for the season. After a decisive victory in our second game, we travelled to Dedham for our third game and faced the Nobles freshman team. Different from the first two games, they jumped ahead, first posting a 7-0 lead after one quarter. We responded with 3 touchdowns and 2 conversions while keeping them off the score board for the duration. Our fourth game vs Groton was the most one-sided of the year. We came away with an easy victory. Our final contest was against rival Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. Their freshman squad was small in number but very skilled. The game was a battle from the start and was decided in the fourth quarter. Those fans who braved the rain and 40° temperatures saw an excellent football game which ended in our favor. All in all the season was a great success. The team would like to thank Coach Martin and Coach Wood for their guidance this season. — Billy Cunningham
Fourth Football This year's 4th football team enjoyed a highly successful season, earning a 5-0 record. Under the direction of Coaches Sawyer and Greer, the team, latent with talent, worked hard and grew closer with each practice. Among the most memorable of the five victories was a 40-0 romp over Brown Jr. High, a 21-10 thumping at Thayer and a 28-21 victory over Roxbury Latin. The team looks forward with great anticipation to progressing in the school's football program. The team wishes to thank Coaches Sawyer and Greer for their efforts this season. — Rich Balikian

5th Football The 5th football team had a very successful season (5-1). Mr. Cressey and Mr. Bradley showed us the fundamentals of the game and made the practices fun and rewarding. Our first opponent did not present much of a problem. We beat Fay handily, 12-0. Next, we faced Roxbury Latin. We played well enough to score 16 points, but we also gave up 2 safeties on bad punt snaps. The final score was 16-4. Our next game was a rematch with Fay. Once again, we emerged victorious 28-0. We then travelled to Weston whose team presented more of a challenge. Weston had an excellent running back who ran for 2 long touchdowns. Finally, came the long awaited showdown with P.C.D. We played our rivals twice this year. The first contest was at BHS. At half time we were losing by a score of 8-6. Then, our defense tightened and our offense was able to put points on the board. We emerged victorious, 12-8. At our second meeting we were not as fortunate, however. After the long bus ride, we just were not ready to play football. We came on in the second half, but it was too late. We lost 14-8. The team wishes to thank Coaches Cressey and Bradley for this highly successful season. — Adam Kosberg
Third Soccer Guided by Coaches Tredennick and Hunt, the Third Soccer team enjoyed an undefeated season and finished number one in new England. The team, which compiled a 13-0-1 record, had only one blemish which was a 3-3 tie to a heavily outplayed Milton team. The team's most demanding game came at the Cushing tournament against a talented Cardigan Mountain team. BHS capitalized on its opportunities and ended up with an inspired 2-1 victory. Groton and G.D.A. provided BHS with difficult games but BHS rose to the occasion and defeated both squads. The team was led by a potent offense, stingy defense, dependable goaltending, and excellent coaching. The future looks bright for this talented group of athletes. The team wishes to thank Coaches Tredennick and Hunt for their efforts this season. 129
Fourth A Soccer Fourth A soccer's 6-4 season can only be described as a great campaign. Under the direction of Coaches Stewart and Moresink, the team worked very hard day after day. As moose laps and shooting drills became part of the routine, the team grew closer and this was indicated by their play. "The most memorable game," said one team member, "was against Shady Hill. They were clearly the better team, but we held our own against them. This showed how we matured this year." The team wishes to thank Coaches Stewart and Moresink for their efforts this season.
Fourth B Soccer The 4B soccer team had a successful season, compiling a 7-2-1 record under the leadership of Mr. Stillwell and Miss Whitney. The two losses came to Fenn, once on their own wet muddy field and again in a close contest at home in the last game of the year. Those were the only blemishes of a very enjoyable season. We pulled out a tie against a very strong Roxbury Latin team and registered convincing victories in all other matches. The consistent offense of Andrew Brown, which included more than one hat trick, the defense of Matt O'Neill and the superior goaltending of Jay Peabody led us past many opponents. Our success can be credited to the depth of our team, the well-run practices (especially the sprints — they helped us against many other schools), and the coaching of Mr. Stillwell and Miss Whitney. Hopefully, next year's squad will have a season as victorious and enjoyable as ours. — Will Vogel 130
Fifth Soccer Fifth soccer was perhaps not as successful as they might have liked with a 4-4 record, but it was a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. Led by Coaches Martellini and Kraft, we charged into our first game against Shady Hill. We were very confident of our ability, and came out of the match with a 8-0 win. We dropped the next few games, but then came back with three strong wins against Rivers, Weston and Shady Hill. With the chance to become two games over five hundred, we faced our last game against a very strong Fay team, but came out with a 4-1 loss. Because of a rainy fall season, we only played eight games finishing with a 4-4 record. The team wishes to thank Coaches Martellini and Kraft for their efforts this year. — Brian Joyce
Middle School Cross-Country At the beginning of the fall athletic season, no one suspected that the Middle School Cross-Country team would not only compile a perfect 10-0 record but also win the Eaglebrook Invitational Tournament. With only one runner returning from last year's team, it seemed as if this would be a rebuilding year for Mr. Rodger's team. He entered the season with high hopes, however, not high expectations. The first few meets would set the precedent for the future. In these meets, Belmont Hill ran impressively, finishing on top in each. The toughest early season competition came against Fessenden, a team with a few very good runners; Belmont Hill emerged victorious. After compiling a 9-0 regular season record, Belmont Hill traveled to the Eaglebrook Invitational Tournament, for which the team had long been preparing. This preparation was not in vain; for Belmont Hill emerged victorious once again, with all of its eight runners finishing within the top twelve in the four school competition, and Chad Rounds, Belmont Hill's number one runner finishing first overall. A return encounter with Fessenden capped off a truly perfect (11-0) season. — Mark Connolly 131

Varsity Basketball The 1989-90 Varsity Basketball Team finished with a 12-8 record. The team won its last 5 league games including wins over Lawrence Academy and Governor Dummer leading to a birth in the New England Class "C" Prep Tournament. This was the second consecutive year the team had participated in this post-season event. When we started practice in November, we had a solid core of returners from 1988-89 (17-4) squad. Led by seniors Ted Murphy and juniors Robert Carlock, Jay Fritz and Stephen Stepanian, the team had a solid base, but lacked the experience that was thought it needed to win on a consistent basis. The team lost its first game to Nobles 43-32. Neither team played to the best of their potential and heading into the Rivers Tournament, Coach Bertelsen was skeptical about the team's chances to repeat as
champions. Led by tournament MVP Ted Murphy, Belmont Hill surprised everyone and went on to the finals with wins over Thayer (55-50) and St. Sebastions (70-31). In the finals, Belmont Hill faced tourney host Rivers and beat them on their home court by 25 points (65-40). After Christmas break, we started up again with a tough away loss to Tabor (66-59). Coach Bertelsen was conspicuously absent, as were the referees, as his wife delivered now team mascot (Christian Erik Bertelsen) on January 5, 1990. The team stayed competitive going 4-3 in its next seven league games. Against Milton, Murphy continued on his torrid scoring pace with 29 points on 10-14 shooting from the field, rivaled by one of the greatest individual performances against the team this year — Jason Greenfield's 28 points, with an incredible 8 three pointers. In a close game, Belmont Hill had its chances to win, but was
unable to put together a strong stretch drive, losing 49-42. The St. Mark's game was notable in that Ted Murphy broke his nose and was unavailable for second half action. However, the gap was filled with strong shooting from Bob Carlock (10 pts) and sophomore sensation Pat Lavelle who took control down the stretch (13 pts) for a 51-47 victory. The team then lost a tough one at Roxbury Latin despite strong play from junior Steve Stepanian (21 pts). The next two games, with Murphy conspicuously absent, the team lost by a total of 6 points to St. Paul's and Thayer Clubs showing drive and determination in their refusal to fold. Junior Jay Fritz filled the gap with 16 points and 9 rebounds against St. Paul's and sophomore John White added 18 rebounds against Thayer in his emergence as a force to be reckoned with in years to come. However, upon Murphy's return, a

rejuvenated team came out with three goals in mind: a winning season in the league, a winning season overall, and 5 wins in the last 5 games. All of the above were to come true. They wasted little time in burning both Brooks and Middlesex, winning by a combined 31 points with Murphy tossing in 21 and 29 points respectively. The next two victims, Lawrence and St. George's were torched as well. Tom Fox, Steve Stepanian and Pat Lavelle emerged as potent all around players. Our final regular season game was played at Belmont Hill against league-leading GDA. This would be the senior's final game at home and once again Captain Ted Murphy came through big leading the way with 31 points and 11 rebounds. Building leads up to as many as 18 points and finally settling for a 63-58 upset victory. However, our season was not over. . . Belmont Hill gained its second consecutive berth in the New England Class "C" Tournament. This tournament game was played against Tabor at BB&N. The team had already lost to Tabor by seven, but was plagued by foul trouble during the first game. Down 18-6 after one, Belmont Hill rallied back and was down by 2 at half-time. In a back and forth second half, Tabor's speed was too much and Belmont Hill went down in defeat 60-52 Belmont Hill Basketball had another successful campaign finish (9-6) in the league and (12-8) overall. Coach Bertelsen earned his 100th victory against Middlesex, this season as well as adding another Bertelsen to the ranks. The team was lead by Murphy who received all-league honors and was awarded the Navoni award from the ISL for sportsmanship and competitive excellence. Next year's team returns many valuable contributors including next year's Co-Captains Jay Fritz and Steve Stepanian, Bob Carlock, Patrick Lavelle, Andy Bourell and John White. JV Basketball The 1989-90 junior varsity basketball team finished with an outstanding 13-3 record. Although overshadowed by a strong varsity team, this JV squad was very proud of their accomplishments throughout the winter athletic season. Peter Kimball, the team's coach, set a tone on the first day of tryouts. His priority was to establish a good defensive team that was quick, aggressive and consistent. The team lived up to the coaches expectations by limiting all opponents to approximately 45 points per game. A great contribution to the team was four members of the varsity who played interchangeably with both
teams: Reid Jordan (no relation to Michael), Jamie Young (no relation to Neil), Mark Brady (no relation to Bobby, Greg, or Cindy), and John White (no relation to Vanna). Their aggressive style of basketball, combined with the desire to win, constituted a great part of the team's winning ways. Other members of the JV squad included juniors: Bill Monahan, who dazzled the fans with Jordan-like moves to the hoop, Joseph Fahmy, who sparked many runs with his long-range shooting, Charlie "Shaggy" Rosenburger, who pulled down many rebounds utilizing his 36 inch vertical leap, Rob "Robby"
Morrissey, who made clutch shots when needed, and finally Chris "Hooter" LaGatta who dumbfounded fans (as well as himself) with some of his shots. Bernie MacNamara led a strong group of sophomores including: Mark Thacker, Jacob "Ice" Catchpole, Derek "The Round Mound of Rebound" Glantz and Dustin Boone. Perhaps the most exhilarating game was the last game of the season against Governor Dummer Academy. The whole team contributed, led by high scorers Young, Fahmy and MacNamara to defeat the Governors 66-59. — Joseph Fahmy

Varsity Hockey As usual the Belmont Hill Varsity Hockey team has had a wonderful season. The team finished first in the Keller League, and first in New England. The team's final record was 14 wins and 2 losses in the Keller League, 24 wins and 6 losses overall. This season started off slowly with a loss to Harvard University JV 3-5. The team picked up the pace a bit and won the next seven games. The first of these was the first league win of the season 14-0 against Nobles. David Kilpatrick led the team not only as its Captain, but in points as well. David scored 3 goals and 2 assists. The next win came the next day. Little Caesars went home with 1 5-1 loss. Pizza, Pizza. The second league game was against GDA. Belmont shelled their goalie, and picked up a 6-3 victory. Ben Coughlin was the high scorer with 2 goals and 2 assists. Belmont Hill victories over Lawrence Academy
3-2, BB&N 8-3, St. Sebastians 11-2, and Milton Academy 3-0 followed. Over Christmas break the team headed down to Princeton N.J. and Buffalo N.Y. for the Lawrenceville and Nichols Tournaments. Belmont Hill won the first game in the Lawrenceville Tournament against Lawrenceville 6-2, and lost the second round to Culver Military Academy. Culver went on to win the Tournament. Belmont finished in third place after defeating St. Pauls 4-3. In Buffalo the team was more successful, winning the first game against Amherst Jr. A 9-2 and the second game against Upper Canada College 4-0. Unfortunately, a loss in the finals against the host team Nichols 5-4 landed Belmont Hill in second place. The team's second league loss of the year came in a rematch with GDA. Although Belmont outshot GDA 37-26, GDA managed to win
the game 2-0. Not letting their heads drop, the team bounced back with triumphs over Thayer Academy 7-3, and St. Pauls 6-1. The team then demolished the Canada Titans 14-2, as senior Jack Callahan came up big with 5 of the 14 goals. Belmont outshot the Titans 112-10. The squad then suffered a disappointing loss to Lawrence Acacdemy, however, 7-5. Three days later the team lost once again, this time to Tabor Academy 5-1. On the comeback trail, Belmont went on to defeat the next 10 teams they faced. The wins were as follows: St. Sebastians 8-1, Thayer Academy 5-1, Andover Academy 3-0, Milton Academy 7-4, Nobles 4-0, St. Pauls 2-1, and the final league game of the year, BB&N 7-1. The team had won the Keller League, and was headed for even greater success in the New England Prep School Tournament. The first game of the tournament

was played at home against an old foe, GDA. Everyone knew who the winner would be, all that was left was to play the game. An astonishing win it was, as BHS won 12-2. The two teams spent a total of 40 minutes 30 seconds in the penalty box. The second game of the tournament was no less thrilling. Belmont was skating on air when the squad won 5-1 against Canterbury. It looked like Belmont Hill would have another chance to play Tabor, but unfortunately (or fortunately) Tabor lost to Westminster 6-5. Belmont Hill was up against a P.G. school where the players were as old as 22 yrs in some cases. The team was not only playing against a hockey team, but a hostile crowd as well. The Belmont Hill fans were outnumbered by at least 3 to 1. Yet, when Belmont got the first goal of the game in the second period the chant SIEVE, SIEVE, SIEVE could be heard above all else. When Westminster covered the puck in their own net, BHS received a penalty shot. Senior Captain David Kilpatrick skated down the ice and picked off the glove side corner of the net to make the score 2-0. Brendan Monahan followed with the next goal to make the score 3-0. Westminster responded with two goals at the end of the second period. Belmont went to the locker room for a quick pep-talk from Coaches Martin and Cleary. Whatever it is that they said seemed to work, as Belmont scored 3 minutes and 7 seconds into the third period and held Westminster to only 1 shot in the entire third period. The final score was 4-2 The crowd ran onto the ice to congratulate the team. The team was met by reporters, television, and fans. The trophy was given to the team as flash bulbs went off in harmony. Another astounding season. Thanks for the memories. Michael Yunes (Manager) 141

The JV A hockey team had another outstanding season under the leadership of Coach Robert Brownell, finishing with a record of 22-1-1. The season was characterized by the Hill's overpowering offensive displays resulting in the double-digit demolition of their opponents. The team did meet their match late in the season, however, as they lost to a talented Walpole Varsity squad 6-3. Under the tutelage of Coach Kevin Fleming, the Belmont Hill JV B hockey team ended the '89-'90 season with an impressive 21-2-1 record. Losses to strong Lincoln-Sudbury and St. John's Prep teams proved ultimately to be the only black marks on the team's 24 game schedule. The squad started quickly with five consecutive wins over Arlington Catholic (9-1), Charlestown (2-1 in overtime), Malden Catholic (9-1), Arlington Catholic again (5-2), and Malden Catholic again (7-2). The team then met up with a solid Lincoln-Sudbury team, losing 3-1.
Following their first loss however, the squad bounced back with a six game unbeaten streak earning victories over Austin Prep (9-2), Xavarian (4-1), Milton Academy (7-0), Malden Catholic (7-2), and Austin Prep (7-1), as well as a tie with Charlestown in overtime. The team then was dealt their second loss of the season, losing 5-3 to St. John's Prep. Not surprisingly, the team bounced back once again, this time with an eleven game winning streak. Victories over Latin Academy (7-5), Malden Catholic (5-4 in overtime), Xavarian (7-4), Charlestown (7-3),
Don Bosco (7-1), Andover Academy (4-3), Milton Academy (10-3), Middlesex (9-0), Mt. St. Charles (7-2), Andover Academy (7-1) and BB&N (9-0 rounded out a season that can be called nothing less than outstanding. The team wishes to thank Mr. Fleming once again for his time and efforts this season. His practices, characterized by intermittent sprints and European 3 on'3 games, were intense, yet fun. This attitude seemed to carry over into the games, which the team feels contributed greatly to its ultimate success. — Frank Yunes

Alpine Ski Team The Belmont Hill alpine ski team clinched its 14th league championship title out of the last 15 years by beating second place Milton and third place Nobles. Both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams competed in six races each against five other schools. The team was composed of 23 skiers, nine of which rotated for the eighth Varsity spot. Co-Captain Bob Crowley finished third in the league and was instrumental to the team's success. Coach Dan Hunt described Crowley as "a skier with very good concentration who is consistently fast." Junior Alex Kahn was fifth out
of the seven all-league members and "skied very well as a new skier for the Varsity squad this year." The third all-league skier from the Hill was freshman Paul Argus who claimed the seventh spot overall. There was talent elsewhere on squad as well, contributing to the team's continued success. Senior Co-Captain Sean O'Brien was unable to participate in three early races but "skied very well and made an incredible comeback." Tom Godino, Jim Poss and Gregg Antonucci also contributed to the success of the team, and are described as all "very technical skiers and will be an
important part of next year's squad." Shawn Hurley and Jake Dwinnell both enjoyed outstanding seasons as well. JV performances included Jason Pimie's two second place finishes and one first place finish, and Mike Ricciardelli, Dave Korb and Andrew Parkhill all with first places. The team wishes to thank Coaches Hunt and Whitney for their efforts this season, and looks forward to another outstanding season in 1990-91 under Co-Captains Mike Ricciardelli and Tom Godino. — Mike Ricciardelli

Varsity Cross Country Skiing After a particularly depressing day of Cross Country Skiing practice, with the drizzle coming down and the wind whipping up, a fellow student came up to me and asked, "Why do you do this?" Looking at my sodden clothes and muddy ski boots, I suddenly realized that I had never thought about it before. Skiing had always just felt like the right sport for me. After much thought, I figured out exactly what attracted me to this unusual activity. It takes a certain type of person to really enjoy cross country skiing at Belmont Hill, since most people would certainly not enjoy girding up a desolate and wind-driven hill in sub-zero temperatures, or sloshing through several inches of dirty slush on a local golf course. The only thing that makes such conditions bearable to the Cross Country Ski
Team is the group's collective insanity. Walking into the ski room, one would not be able to tell that the people here were the 1990 Division Two New England Champions. In fact, one would think that this cross-country skiing was the equivalent of winter intramural softball. As Head Coach Francis Kirby once jokingly said to our team, "You guys must be the most negative skiers in the league." Superficially, he may have been right, because we never failed to complain about the conditions or the length of the course before each race. However, this was our way of keeping the sport in perspective, and not taking things too seriously. Indeed, despite our easy-going attitude, we managed to find determination and stamina that enabled us to perform well.
Certainly, the fact that everyone on the team was good friends helped us this year, a fact that was reflected in our everyday performance. Indeed, a factor that largely led to our success was the existence of a very strong 'pack; in the varsity team that race after race took consecutive positions in the top twenty finishers. A typical finish order consisted of one or two racers from other schools, then Sanford Whitehouse (Belmont Hill's number one skier), then maybe two skiers from other schools, and then the 'pack' of four or five Belmont Hill Skiers, followed by the rest of the racers. The annual pre-season trip to Waterville Valley did much to foster this sense of comradery. Blessed with especially good conditions this year at Ski Camp, the team spent four days of moderately tough skiing.

Even though the snow conditions this year left much to be desired, we made the best of a bad situation and still managed to practice on snow most days. Although snowfall this season did exceed that of last year, the team faced slushy and dirty snow for most of the season. Most practices were spent at the Weston Ski Track, which offers snowmaking, and not at the Corcord Country Club, where the team normally practices when conditions are favorable. We quickly grew bored of incessant loops of the ski track loop, but Coach Kirby did his best to enliven the situation with practices spent on games of "Zippy Ball" and "Brittish Bulldogs" that were supposed to help stamina and technique but more often than not ended up with broken skis and battered limbs. However, we enjoyed ourselves, which was all that mattered. Cross Country Skiing is unusual for Belmont Hill in that the team is made up of students from many different age groups. Thus, seniors were able to share their knowledge of the sport and offer help with second formers. Upper schoolers, therefore, became friends with middle schoolers that they might not otherwise have met. Another characteristic of BHS skiers that endeared me to the sport was the fact that all kept success and failure in perspective. Rather than setting our goals on the Championship or an undefeated season, we strived only to improve our performance over previous races, trying to beat individuals to whom we had lost before. Considering all of these points, the positive aspects of skiing far outweigh the negative ones. At first glance, it may not seem the most glamorous of activities, but it is the aspects that people don't see that make cross country skiing unique. The team wishes to thank the Coaches for their efforts this season, and looks forward to equal success next year. — Hugh Hynes

Varsity Squash Before the season began Mr. Seeley made it very clear that this year's varsity squash team would be a six man team. The players questioned his new policy, but as the season progressed it proved to be instrumental in the success of this year's squad. The team started off the season with a good showing at the Jackson tournament, finishing third out of five schools. It then finished runner up in the Belmont Hill Christmas tournament and then proceeded to attain a record of 5 wins and 2 losses (losing only to St. Paul's and
Groton). The team continued to perform well following this initial surge of tournaments relying on its overall depth to pull out important wins against Deerfield and Brooks (3-2 in both). Because of the "six-man team," Belmont Hill was able to maintain a full squad and continue to compete strongly in its remaining matches. Although the team lost some very close matches at the end of the season to tough Andover and Milton teams, the squad managed to finish the season with a very respectable 11-6 record and an
overall good feeling about its performance. It was this confidence matched with the intense competitiveness of the players that was the driving force behind Belmont Hill's successful campaign and strong finish in the Interscholastic Tournament. The depth and physical stamina instilled in the team at the outset by Coaches Seeley and Schafer formed the basis for the team's very successful season. The team wishes to thank them for their efforts, and looks forward to continued success next year. — Tim Ehrlich

JV Squash Following an early loss to Milton, the 1989-90 JV Squash team never looked back, posting an impressive 12-1 record. Decisive wins over Middlesex, St. Paul's, Brooks, Nobles, Groton and Andover highlighted the squad's winning streak.
Perhaps the sweetest victory of the 12 was a win over the very same Milton team that had beaten them previously. The JV Squash team was composed of 4 juniors (Scott Parrot, Phil Goldsmith, Jeff Jones and Dave Khoury), two sophomores, (Simon
Dalgleish and Graham Robinson) and one talented seventh grader (Adrian Marshall). The team wishes to thank Coach Schafer for his time and efforts this season. — Scott Parrot

Varsity Wrestling Consisting of three seniors, two juniors, one freshman and eight sophomores, the varsity wrestling team holds great promise for the future. Since Belmont Hill had a relatively young team this year, all its victories came from hard work and conditioning. At practice, Coach Don "von" Bradley, assisted by coach Josh Kraft, created a light-spirited, but serious atmosphere in which the team could improve. During meets, while other team's coaches remained silent, Mr. Bradley would yell out encouragements and advise to his wrestlers. All of the coaching, conditioning, and training came together, when the wrestling team delivered a crushing defeat to P.C.D. at the last home meet. At heavyweight, Captain Michael Brown was the emotional leader of the team. Even as he moved on to an impressive record of 11-2 and a third place finish at the
Graves-Kelsey wrestling tournament, Mike still had an amazing ability to motivate other wrestlers. Marcus Collier, a senior in the 130 pound weight class, used his amazing quickness and strength to drop stunned opponents on their backs. At every home match, the noise from the fans would increase tenfold when Marcus took to the mat. Marcus ended the year with a record of 10-3 and a fourth place finish at the Graves-Kelsey. Wrestling at 160 pounds, Amen Eubanks often used his strength to overpower other wrestlers. Often, he would lift his rival and throw him to the ground. At the Thayer match, Amen elevated his opponent off the ground and accidentally dropped him on the referee. A senior, weighing in at 171 pounds, Stephen Daunis was unquestionably the best leg wrestler on the team. His double grape vines
could turn even his strongest competitors into submissive piles of flesh. At 140 pounds, Darren Orr and Mark Dalakalis, both sophomores, wrestled about an equal number of matches at that weight. Since one would often wrestle an exhibition match, both wrestled in nearly three quarters of the meets. In the 152 pound weight class, Todd Crowley wrestled with focused intensity and skill. When wrestling on the bottom, Todd would always be in constant motion. When he shot in on his opponent's legs, Todd almost always obtained a take-down. Colin "Triple Fat Goose" O'Donnell, a freshman at 103, using his long arms, amazingly defeated many of the juniors and seniois in his class. Jay Marden, a sophomore at 112, often had trouble keeping his weight at 112 pounds, hut he never had any

trouble putting opponents on their backs. Weighing in at 125 pounds, Keith DeBlasi always tried his hardest. The day before one match, Keith hurt his back. Yet, the next day he came to weigh in, holding a heating pad to his back. Later that day, his back seething in pain, Keith went out on the mat and pinned his opponent. Taking second place at the Graves-Kelsey for the 119 pound class and ending the year with a 9-3 record, Andrew Daunis will undoubtedly be unmatched in his wrestling ability in the next two years. Andy is also unmatched for his wit and sense of humor. John Craven, a sophomore at 189 pounds, was the only person heavy enough to wrestle with Mike Brown in practice. John, however, dreaded wrestling with "Brownie," because Mike would always put John in painful moves. When it was time for John to wrestle in a match, he seemed to remember what Mike had done to him in practice, and John decided to take his revenge out on his opponent. John Morris, a junior, wrestled a fine season at 135 pounds. He expects to be a force in next year's season. Chris Dahlberg, a junior at 145 pounds, ended the season with a record of 5-7-1. Bepi Raviola, George Pantazelos, Nick "Chesty" Vietor, Tom Horan, Andrew Cassanos, and Andrew Hack were the other members of Varsity Wrestling. The Wrestling team would especially like to thank the Daunis family for allowing us to stay in their house in Rhode Island for the Graves-Kelsey wrestling tournament. We also appreciate the support shown by our captain, David Kraft, our manager, Jay Medaglia, the Browns, the Krafts, and all of the other people who supported the team at our home matches. And, we offer our deepest gratitude to Mr. Bradley, who has devoted so much of his time and energy toward helping the team. — Chris Dahlberg 161

Third Basketball This year's Freshman Basketball Team exceeded all expectations, posting an impressive 13-0 record. The first two games of the season proved ultimately to be the toughest, as the squad defeated Groton by two points in a hard fought contest, and Roxbury Latin, also by a two point margin, in double overtime. The team steadily improved, going on to demolish such strong teams as Nobles, Middlesex, GDA and Fay. The undefeated season was highlighted by outstanding individual performances. The dazzling offensive moves of Mike Nadar, the relentless play of Matt Fritz, the stingy defense of Gautam Chopra, Caleb Collins and Matt Kilmartin, the domination of the boards by Kenny Sommers, Matt and Pat O'Neill, the outside shooting of Mark Connolly, Carl Fantasia and Mike Laurence, and the outstanding work ethic of Tony Rosenfield and Reza Fateh, all added up to a well deserved 13-0 record. The team wishes to thank Coach Martellini, the mastermind behind the success of the squad this season. His keen insight and vast basketball knowledge proved to be the difference game after game. — Mike Haggerty
Fourth Basketball The Fourth Basketball Team posted a 7-7 record this season, under the guidance of Coach Fleming. "We ran into some tough public school opponents," said a team member, "but we handled the ISL competition pretty well. Our wins over Milton and Rivers stand out in my mind." The squad worked hard, growing mentally and becoming closer as a group while earning its 7-7 record, which in retrospect was described as "respectable under the circumstances" by one of its members. The team wishes to thank Coach Flemming for his efforts this season, as they look forward to proving themselves next year as freshmen. — Josiah Epps

Fifth Basketball Belmont Hill School's Fifth Basketball team posted a misleading record of 3-5 this year, as the squad lost several close games. Clearly a better team than their record indicates, the team was also hampered by several key injuries. "We worked hard," said one team member, "but we just didn't get the results we deserved." The team wishes to thank Coach Greer for his efforts this season, and looks forward to proving themselves next year. — Jack Lander
Third Hockey The third hockey team's 1989-90 campaign can be called nothing less than a success, posting an impressive record of 23 wins and 3 losses. Among the most memorable games of the season were those against teams from New York, Connecticut and the Soviet Union. The Season was truly unforgettable. The team wishes to thank Coaches Gallagher and Landau for their time and effort this season.
165
Fourth Hockey The Fourth Hockey Team posted an impressive 10-2-2 record this season under the Coaching of Mr. Orrin Wood. "Our toughest opponent by far was Fay, although we defeated them 6-5 and 8-2 in our two games with them," said one team member. "They always came to play and I think that was good for us." The team worked hard and improved as a unit as the season progressed. The team wishes to thank Mr. Wood for his efforts this season, and looks forward with great anticipation to playing freshman hockey next year. — Jay Peabody
Fifth Hockey The Fifth Hockey Team had a great season posting an 11-2 record while only losing to St. Moritz and Nobles. Victories over Rivers 9-1, St. Moritz 5-3, Fay 14-1 and 13-1, BB&N 14-1, Attason J.H. 3-1, Austin Prep 5-3, 10-5 and 5-2, and Fessenden 8-0 and 13-1 highlighted the season. Eric Almon was tough between the pipes, and defensemen Brian Joyce, Todd Davis, Kirk McKeown and Nick Thompson proved strong as well. Forwards Rony Griffin, Chris Yoshida, Mike Mellor, Justin Monahan, Bax Smith, Dave Phillips, Alex Brooks, Fordy Curran, John Westcott and Geoff Sprague added the needed offense. The team wishes to thank Coach Marsh for his efforts this season. Mr. Marsh not only taught the team how to win, but how to win effectively. — Kirk McKeown
166
Third Squash The third squash team's 1989-90 campaign can be called nothing less than a success, as the squad posted an impressive record of 12 wins and one loss. The team suffered its only loss to a strong Milton Academy club, early in the season, but managed to get their revenge shortly after. The team's impressive ladder included Jason Boxer, Bill Tarr, Nick Grevelis, Zack Segal, Tom Tadros, Chad Rounds and Eric Shaff. The team wishes to thank Coaches Stillwell and Moresink for their time and efforts this season, and looks forward to upper school squash.
Middle School Wrestling The Middle School Wrestling team experienced a "roller coaster season," according to one team member, under the Coaching of Mr. Josh Kraft. The squad started out slow, and although they were greatly improved by season's end, finished a mere fourth in the standings. "We were not the same team by the end of the season," said one team member, "we really were better than fourth place." Individual performances highlighted the squad's season ending tourney, with Captains Jamie Binnall and Ron Horsley each picking up first place trophies, and Captain Al Gleason earning a third place trophy. The team wishes to thank Coach Kraft for his efforts this season, and looks forward to competing at the varsity level next year. — Jason Johnston-Mason 167

Director's Notes
I suppose it is not a coincidence that in these times of disintegrating socialstructures the fast three winter productions havefocused on the family. Beginning with 'Texas Trilogy each of these vehicles has examined the role of the family in the development of values, strengths, and weaknesses; indeed the total personality. In 'Texas Trilogy' the family is a spider web of failed dreams, alcoholism, and abuse which clings to Lu.Anne, limiting her vision and more importantly her ability to act on her dreams. 'Our Town presents a seemingly positive view of two charming Kew England families. But as the play MOVES on we find the members of the families parochial in attiturfe.s and perfunctory in their relationships. Emily sums it all up when she says at the end of the play, 'So all this was going on,and we never noticed.' '13nghton Beach Mentoirs' closes our own trilogy on thefamily. I will not spoilyour evening by commenting on this experience. Knowing the context in which we present this family to you shouldsuffice. 'Enjoy!

Varsity Baseball The varsity baseball team posted a 13-2 season record and clinched the league title with an exciting 1-0 victory over Groton in the second to last game of the season. Senior, all league pitcher Jamie Stanzler (8-1 for the season) hurled a one hitter on his way to victory. The team was ecstatic over the win and the league title. Not since 1985 had the baseball program won the I.S.L. The success of the team was due largely to the dedication and guidance of the team's two coaches, Mike Shafer and Bob Brownell. Without their knowledge and management, the team could not have had such a successful season. The 17 players bonded together as a unit and performed beautifully. Solid defensive play and timely hitting enabled B.H.S. to prevail. The squad boasted five all league members: pitcher Jamie Stanzler, two time batting champion Ben Caughlin, co-captain Mike McHugh, third baseman Dan Katz and first baseman Ted Murphy. Through the seniors' mature leadership and the underclassmen's intense competitiveness, the team triumphed. The season was a dream, one in which next year's team can only hope to repeat. — Scott Parrot

Varsity Crew The 1990 varsity crew season was very successful, boasting a 4-0 record. The spring opened with two preseason races against Pomfret and St. Pauls. These races enabled the team members to taste a little competition before the season, and supplied the coaches with true race conditions in which they could make their final assignments to all boats, 1 through 4. Once the boats were set, they saw little change during the season. The crew program also saw the addition of a top of the line bow cox Vespoli light weight shell named the Princess Elizabeth Cup which was used by the first boat during the season. The first boat consisted of Captain Jim McCarthy, David Shaff, Chris Woll, Peter McLaughlin, and coxswain David Korb. The second ,i boat led by coxswain Sanford Whitehouse included Doug Marple, Michael Hewitt, Shawn Hurley and Jay Fritz. The third boat stroked by Jamie Seamans rowed with Abdi Fateh, Dave Evans, George Mix and coxswain Paul Argus. Finishing up the varsity squad was Fraser Walsh, Nate Paine, Jake Dwinell, Dexter Whelton and coxswain Scott Fitzgerald. The first race of the year was against rival Buckingham, Brown and Nichols where the first boat lost in a close race, but the second, third and fourth boats all finished first, capturing the win. The second race of the season was against Nobles where once again all boats saw victory except for the first. This was also the case against Brooks, as the Princess Elizabeth Cup waited for its first win. This victory came when the varsity crew team swept St. Marks in the last race of the preregatta season. At the New England championships at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, the B.H.S. third and fourth boats came away champions defeating touch opponent Groton, and in a close race, the second boat came in third. B.H.S. ended up losing in the over-all standings by one point to Groton. The team thanks its Coaches for their time and effort this season, and looks eagerly forward to 1991. — Scott Fitzgerald

Varsity Lacrosse Although frustrated and disappointed at times, the varsity lacrosse team had a successful season finishing with a record of 8 and 6. With the excellent coaching and relentless drilling of coaches Treddenick and Bradley during the preseason, the team got off to a promising start, beating Pingree and Thayer quite easily. After a disappointing loss to Groton, the team mustered its forces, and under the leadership of tri-captains Will Halby, Peter Kilmartin and Ben Davis, avenged the Groton loss by annihilating Rivers 24-6 and beating a strong Middlesex team 9-6. The lacrosse team then suffered two painful losses to powerhouse Tabor squad 11-10 in overtime and St. Marks 7-6. Desperate for a win, the team worked extra hard in practice to prepare for the upcoming beating Milton in a messy occasion, the to rose clash with top ranked Milton Academy. That Saturday, the squad season. the of point high mudwrestle at home, by the score of 9-8; this was the Although the team only went 1 and 3 for the next two weeks, they were able to cap off a strong season with two impressive wins over Roxbury Latin and B.B.&N. Against B.B.&N., tri-captain Will Halby shattered the school scoring record with 8 goals in the game, bringing his career total to an incredible 180 points. All three captains, Halby, Kilmartin and Davis were recognized with all league honors. Under the leadership of co-captains Carl Talmo and Mark Rooney, with the returning varsity lettermen as well as the many talented players moving up from junior varsity and middle school teams, the lacrosse team and coaches feel strongly that next year's team may improve further on this year's successful season. — Carl Talmo

Varsity Tennis This year's Belmont Hill varsity tennis team suffered through a roller-coaster season, with a series of ups and downs. After beginning the season at 6-0, the team slipped to 8-4, including a three-match losing streak, then finished up the season with a record. The team consisted of five returning lettermen: juniors David Khoury, Eliott Lepofsky, and Griff Blake and seniors Jonathan Boxer and Todd Sullivan. Rounding out the squad were freshmen Nick Keyes-Grevelis, junior Steve Stepanian, and seniors Robin Shahani and Harold Huang. The team had been performing well until, on April 28, in a match against a not-so-powerful St. George's team, Belmont Hill without three singles players, Khoury, Lepofsky, and Grevelis, lost its first match of the year. The three were playing in a national qualifier round and, unfortunately, the remaining players were not able to pull the team to victory. After defeating Lawrence Academy the team reeled through three consecutive losses, to Milton Academy, Nobles and Rivers. The loss to Rivers was not easy to swallow for Belmont Hill. This marked the first time a Belmont Hill tennis team had suffered a loss to Rivers. As junior Steve Stepanian stated after the game,"We were simply miserable." However, the team bounced back with convincing victories over Brooks and St. Sebastian's, and finished the season off with one more win against St. Mark's. The team wishes to thank coach Dan Hunt for his time and effort this season. — Steve Stepanian

Despite missing four meets due to bad weather, the 4-1 record of this year's varsity track squad was still enough to give Belmont Hill a tie with Milton and Thayer for the I.S.L. league championship, B.H.S. first ever. "It was a good year," said sophomore Simon Dalgleish with team modesty. Together with the team's second-place finish in the I.S.L. meet and the come-from-behind third at the Class B New England Prep School Track Association meet, it was indeed a "good year." Only Milton Academy stood in the way of making the season "a great" one, as the perennial power notched a clear victory over B.H.S. in regular season play. However, the - A real story of the season came over two weeks later as Belmont Hill faced Thayer who had upset Milton in a tri-meet along with Worcester Academy. With a win guaranteeing the three way tie the B.H.S. team was three points down heading into the meets last event, the 4 x 400 relay. Belmont Hill left no question as to who would take the last five points as a team of senior tri-captains Michael Shwartz, Cole Conlin and Marcus Collier along with sophomore Mark Thacker, crushed the opposition, snatching a two-point victory. Despite this year's success, sophomore Penn Clarke vows that next year will be even better, "I think we'll win the league (alone) next year, we'll beat Milton next year," he stated emphatically. The success, however, can only be attributed to the coaching and leadership the squad received. "Once again," said Clarke, "Mr. Kirby has done a fantastic job." In addition, the success of the field events speaks for the efforts of their coach John MacLean and the 4 x 100 relay team's first-place finish at the New England's attests not only to the runners' skill but to sprinter coach Kevin Fleming's abilities. "We owe a lot to all of our seniors as well," said Clarke, "especially in terms of leadership by example. They really made this season what it was." — Robert Carlock If;

Golf The Belmont Hill Golf team finished a very successful season with a three-stroke victory in the ISL tournament. The top five players on the team competed, with the top four players scoring. The five golfers who competed were Tyler Spring, John Melillo, Brendan Monahan, Frank Yunes, and Bryan Hughes. Spring shot a 79, which was the lowest score in the tournament, and Monahan shot an 80. Yunes and Melillo also placed in the tourney. The team finished with a total score of 333, beating league rival and close competitor Rivers by four strokes. Team captain Yunes commented, "We had the most depth of any team in the league, and so we knew we had a shot coming into the ISL's, and we came up big." During the season the team accumulated 12 wins, with only two losses and one tie. They defeated Milton (twice), Lawrence (twice), Nobles (twice), Andover, P.C.D., Thayer, Tabor, Rivers, St. Sebastian's, and Middlesex. Melillo said, "We really started playing well at the end of the season, and that proved to be a help in the tournament." Other members of the team include: first-formers, Jack Landers and Justin Monahan; freshman, Michael Burns and juniors, J.P. Paquin and Mark Brady. — Mike Micozzi

Sailing The Belmont Hill varsity sailing team enjoyed continued success this season under the leadership and direction of coach Chris Zamore. After winning all but one meet, two skippers and four crews made the trip to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. Skippers Nick Cramb and Mike Huang, along with crews Jon Bordeau, Andrew Hack, John Colarusso, and Rich Canzano, represented Belmont Hill at the New Englands. After placing a respectable eleventh place, eight team members competed in the three-day Massachusetts Bay Team Racing Championships. A fleet of brand-new JY-15 boats were provided for the event, courtesy of Johnston Yachts. The regatta was hampered by rain two of the three days; however, the competition continued. Milton Academy ended victorious, with Belmont Hill finishing a close second. Eight members of the team competed in the New England Team Racing Championships. Competition took place at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a fleet of F-J's. Belmont Hill ended the competition placing fifth over-all. Nick Cramb's comments summed up the team's successful spring: "I thought the team did pretty well this season. We had a lot of new sailors and a lot of new competition. I think by next year we will have improved a great deal." — Jon Bordeau
