Dedication: Mr. Edward Gallagher The class of 1995 is dedicating the Sundial to Mr. Edward Gallagher in appreciation of the time, effort, and care that he gave to everyone. Mr. Gallagher is, innessence, an epitome of Belmont Hill and all that it stands for. Courage, honor, and drive are but a few of his admirable attributes. He is an intense man, who gives much to his students and players, and expects nothing less in return. He is at home translating Caesar or teaching an umbrella power play, a testament to his versatile skills and his heart — he is a teacher first and foremost. He is a man with honor, with integrity, who does everything at 110%, and who is driven to perfection. To many of us who have had the pleasure to know him over our Hill careers, Mr. Gallagher, teacher, coach, friend, is Belmont Hill. — Kirk McKeown Mr. Gallagher, BHS senior in 1966

"Oh, they'll just figure it out at the factory ..." Well, assuming that anyone is reading this right now, the yearbook must have finally gotten done. The entire staff pulled together to accomplish the task set before us, facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles such as an inane yearbook — company theme, deadlines that had a tendency to sneak up on us undetected, broken typewriters; a little graffiti scandal, and the undisputed messiest room on campus. There was an extremely small staff this year, and most of us were fairly inexperienced. Thus, everybody was called upon to perform long hours and terribly-tenuous chores. We, the Editors, would like to sincerely thank the entire staff for their amazing efforts. Pictures were plentiful thanks to Brad, Ian Broff, Dave, and Ian Bass. And without the skill perseverance displayed by Greg, Niel, and Ian "Lev" on layout, well, the situation would have been ugly. The staff went well above and beyond the call of — BA & AF duty, and thanks are to go out to them.

yes, well, there's a lot to be said about all this, so come and talk to me. that'll be much easier than cramming it all onto this page.
I've done some good stuff, some bad stuff, and some more stuff, and i think i've turned out all right. so i'm just gonna keep right on doin' my stuff, and see what happens. hopefully once I'm out of here i'll do more stuff that i want to do and less stuff with lined paper, but that's not to say that this hasn't been neat. thanks to the teachers who have opened my eyes and my mind, and to the friends who have helped me grow.
Mom and Dad — I can't thank you enough for all you've given me. I love you.

Now for the Academy Award acceptance bit. I have so many people to thank for their kindfiess, hospitality and friendship. Fl the E.S.U. and Belmont Hill setting up my visit. Thanks also t the Eastmans, the Evans, the Ostunis and the Gallaghers, who have been kind enough to put me up (or put up with me) during my stay so far. Also to all the faculty and especially the McAlpins who helped me settle in and were very kind when the weather conspired against me. I'll be going to University in England later this year, but after that who knows. Take care and live life to the full. Au revoir!

In the fall of 1989, forty or so seventh graders entered the Belmont Hill School and the Class of 1995 was born Over the years, the class has seen many comings and goings: of decades, of headmasters, of numerous classmates, and of times in our lives Now, six years later, the class of '95 consists of sixty boys ready to move on from B.H.S.and take on the challenges of college and what lies beyond In the athletic arena, we have experienced triumphs and learned valuable lessons In the classroom, our minds have expanded and grown like they may never again In acting and singing and speaking and writing we have showcased our talents and found our passions And in all aspects, we have made friends that will last far beyond these memorable high school years The members of this year's graduating class have been through much together. What lies ahead is indeed uncertain, but not entirely. We can be sure of the presence of success, happiness, and fond memories of our time at Belmont Hill Now we depart for the future, and there is "nowhere to go but everywhere." In all that you shall do, good luck to all members of the Class of 1995.

Model Railroad Club
Founded in the early fall by Sophomore James Raskob, the Model Railroad Club attracted immediate attention throughout the Upper School. The club got off to a roaring start,as some of its first meetings boasted upwards of sixty people. The group settled into its routine, meeting weekly to discuss its ambitious plans. The club continued to capture the interest of many students: lunch announcements concerning the group met with widespread cheer and shouts of"Choo-choo!" All in all, the club has gotten off to a tremendous start.

A MARGE JOHNS;TO THE HEART OF THE HAMMEN DREAM
"Few people understood the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side when he sees the big red light behind hits ... and then he will start apologizing, begging for mercy. "This is wrong It amuses contempt in the cop-heart. The thing to do — when you're running along about a hundred or so and you suddenly find a red-Bashing CHP tracker on your trail — what you want to do then is weltrate Never pull over with the first siren-howl. Mash it down and make him chase you at speeds up to 120 all the way to the next exit. He will follow. But he won't know what to make of your blinker-signal that says you're about to tum right. "This is to let him know you're looking for a proper place to pull over and talk ... keep signaling and hope for an off-ramp, one of those uphill side-loops with a sign saying "Max Speed 25" and the trick is. at this point. is to suddenly leave the freeway and take him into the chute at no less than a hundred miles an hour. He will lock his brakes about the some time you lock yours. but it will take him a moment to realize that he's about to make a 180-degree firm at this speed ... but you will be ready for it. braced for the Gs and the fast heel-toe work, and with any luck at all you will have come to a complete stop off the road at the top of the turn and be standing beside your automobile by the time he catches up. "He will not be reasonable at first . but no matter Let him calm down. He will want the first word. Let him have it. His brain will be in a turmoil, he may begin jabbering. or even pull his gun. Let him unwind, keep smiling the idea here is to show him that you were always in total control of yourself and your vehicle while he lost control of everything ..."

Hunter S. Thompson is a free-lance writer and failed politician from Woody Creek. Colorado. who turns to writing when he needs money to crank up his life style. In the middle 1960's, Thompson became deeply involved with the Drug and Violence subculture around San Francisco Bay. Soon afterward, suffering from culture-shock and Savage Flashbacks, he retired to Woddy Creek to raise Wild Boar and Doberman Pinschers. But his life style was severely altered when he became involved in a locally based power movement known as "The Aspen Power Uprising." which caused such drastic upheavals in the community that Thompson was compelled to run for Sheriff in a frenzied election that drew national attention and shattered the integrity, in Aspen. of both major parties. The Freak Power candidates were narrowly defeated. Meanwhile the author continues to work his strange tangents. seemingly oblivious of public outrage, acclaim or criticism of any sort. He is known, to his handful of friends, as a compulsive hermit with an atavistic fondness the .44 Magnum and extremely amplified music.

This year's Varsity Football team, led by co-captains David Parker and Todd Davis, overcame several obstacles to secure a a winning record and have a great season. The team started the season as a relatively inexperienced squad, facing lost. first their suffered and short fell talented Milton team. The outcome was a hard fought game, but Belmont The next game proved to be just as disappointing. The great defensive determination of Captain David Parker kept the team in the game, but it was not to be, as the team lost to Lawrence by a slim margin of 8-6. Filled with excitement, the team seemed to be determined to win on Alumni Day in front of a huge homecoming crowd. Ignited by two touchdown receptions to senior Rory Griffin, and impressive defensive work by senior Greg Galligan; the squad demonstrated its ability to win. Following the first win of the season, the team faced a physical Thayer team. Despite the aggressiveness of captain Todd Davis and junior Donald Chiafaro, the team suffered their third lost to the I.S.L. powerhouse. The game, although a loss, proved the resilience of the team. The team approached its remaining games determined to win and finish with a winning season. Heading into the game against Rivers, the defense was thoroughly drilled by coaches Kevin Flemming,Jack Morris and Carl Hobert. From the onset of the game the defense clearly overpowered the Rivers team. The tremendous effort of senior tackle Dan Egan and senior corner back Baxter Smith frustrated the River's offense and kept them out of the end zone for the entire game. Following an exhausting two hour bus ride to St. Paul's, the squad strapped up its uniform and prepared fora long game. Despite leading by seven points after the first half, the real game had not begun. After giving up two quick touchdowns to St. Pauls, Belmont found themselves behind by nine points with four minutes left. The offense went to work behind the arm of Paul Mara and the soft hands of senior Chris Day. Day closed in on St. Pauls with three receptions, which included a 40 yard touchdown pass from Mara. Seniors Brian Langley and Rory Griffin also contributed to the cause with some incredible receptions that kept the team driving down field. As the game clock ticked down,it was the Belmont Hill team that climbed to the top winning 34-31. Going into the final game against a highly talented G.D.A.. it was not clear who the victor would be. When the two teams took the field, the intensity of Belmont proved they were more than motivated. The defense consistently hammered away at the G.D.A.offense with unrelenting pressure by David Parker, Greg Galligan and Dan Egan. While the offense walked over the G.D.A. with tremendous blocking by senior Kirk Mckeown, who kept G.D.A.'s two hundred pound captain in check the entire game. The Belmont Hill Football team fought hard to maintain its winning tradition and should be commended for its success.

The beginning of this year's BHS soccer season started with a few returning players and a wealth of talent amongst a vast number of soccer aspirants. Coaches Jorge Montoya and Clifford Goodband were amazed at the turnout, but found it difficult to select the right group of athletes from such a gifted group of players. Tryouts were extended this year, until a large group of 19 players were chosen to represent the BHS soccer program, which had been champions of the I.S.L. league for the past five seasons. The pressure of a winning tradition was high, as was the fact that eleven seniors had graduated the team the previous year. The school and team had mixed feelings about the success of the squad initially, but when the team formed itself as a unit, it was easy to see that there was no shortage of talent for this season. To transform the team into the solid unit it became was not easy, and leadership skills had to be assumed by many of the veterans. Co-captains Sean Riley and Dan Young, both veteran starters, brought the team together through discipline and co-operation. Through their guidance, the team changed itself from a group of individuals into a single striking force, all working as one for the good of the team. Success was derived not from superstars, but from teammates. The team, by finishing a close third place in the league, proved to the school, the coaches, and themselves that they had what it took to be winners. And not only they achieve success in terms of wins, but also in their attitudes and hard work. At the close of each season all of the players from each team in the ISL vote for whom they believe should be the recipient of the Blood trophy, an award given for outstanding sportsmanship by a team. Belmont Hill was the recipient this year, and the classiness and skill brought them the admiration from the rest of the league. John Ginnocaupolos was named the League's MVP for outstanding play and the ISL high of 19 goals. Sean Riley, Dan Young, and Brett Wegner received the highest praise from the league and opposing players for their contributions to the BHS soccer program. Although Belmont Hill was not able to enter any tournaments, the coaches and the players agreed on what an exciting and enjoyable season it had been.

Led by co-captains Bob Molvar and Chad Rounds, the 1994 varsity cross-country team began their training in early July. The summer training, in the blistering heat, consisted of track work, hills, and lengthy endurance runs in Bedford. Along with coaches Chris Zamore and Fran Kirby, many of the varsity runners headed for Santa Fe, New Mexico in August for some high altitude training. While there, they trained with strong runners from the Santa Fe Indian School. The season began with disappointing team performances at the Lincoln-Sudbury and Franklin Park invitationals. Having run poor races in both meets, it was clear that, in order to perform well at the ISL Championships, much work had to be done. The season was marked by many ups and downs due to key injuries and inexperience. The team was able to overcome its injury problems and its inexperience by relying on the great guidance and nurturing provided by our coaches. The coaches were also able to design a work out schedule which allowed us to peak for the championships. By the time the championships had rolled around, the team had matured and was confident about its chances. With the entire varsity peaking at once, the team was able to take home the third place team trophy behind perennial powers St. Pauls and Roxbury Latin. The core of the 1994 varsity cross-country team consisted of Ryan Hoffman, Bob Molvar, Joe Delgardo, Chad Rounds, Neil Francisco, Todd Speros, Mike Kelley, and Dave Mahoney. The regular season began with a loss to a very talented Phillips Andover team. Although the team lost, it received strong performances from All-League and All-New England runners Bob Molvar and Ryan Hoffman. Hoffman also ran a super race in the championships, as he placed first overall, which garnered him Globe All-Scholastic honors. Chad Rounds, a potential All-League runner, was plagued with nagging injuries throughout the season, which did not allow him to train as hard as he had wanted to. Although Rounds was unable to run for most of the season, he kept a positive attitude and worked out on the rowing machine and stationary bike. His hard work paid off in the championships, where he ran a courageous race, placing in the top thirty. Super sophomore, Joe Delgardo, was an unexpected surprise for this years team. Delgardo consistently improved throughout the year and was able to place in the top thirty-five, which is excellent for a sophomore. Senior Dave Mahoney was hampered all season with ankle problems, yet he continued to train hard and provided an inspiration for us all. Seniors Mike Kelley and Todd Speros were first year varsity runners who had superb work ethics and were also consistent contributors to the team's success. Neil Francisco was also a valuable member of the team. The team would like to thank all of the parents who hosted dinners and cheered us on during races. — Bob Molvar and Todd Speros 148

Varsity Basketball
The 1994-1995 season was a remarkably successful one for the Belmont Hill Basketball team. Their overall regular season 13-6 record was one of th best the team had produced in several years, while their one point less in the semi-finals of the new England Class C tournament put them closer to finals appearance than any Belmont Hill Basketball team in over a dozen years. Although their tallest player was no taller than 6'3", they were able t beat many bigger teams by using their quickness to overwhelm their opponents on defense and a newfound transition game along with precision outside-shooting to score on the offensive end. The season started with a tentative win over a mediocre Nobles squad, but when the two teams squared of again 5 days later in the first round of th River's tournament, it was Nobles who edged out Belmont Hill. The team was able to win its next 2 games, against Rivers and Milton, showing a improvement in each successive performance. Coming back from the winter break, Belmont Hill faced a tough Tabor team. With their defense leading th way,th-ough,they were able to win convincingly and walk away confident that they were a match for any team in the league. The next four games agains Groton, Milton, BB&N and Rivers were all wins but St. Sebastian's halted the seven game streak, berating Belmont Hill by 7 points. The following 3 game were wins vs. St. Marks, Roxbury Latin, and St. Pauls, and the team went into their match-up with Thayer with an 11-2 record. Belmont played well and too the undefeated league leader right down to the wire, tying it up with just seconds left in regulation. Thayer pulled ahead early in overtime, however, and held on to the lead and the win. The next 2 games, against Brooks and Middlesex, were also very close, and also loses, but in a final push for a toumamen berth, the team was able to log wins against Lawrence and St. George's. In their final game of the regular season, BHS suffered a loss against the last place team in the league. GDA. Luckily, however they had already made the toumament. The following Wednesday, the team traveled to Nobles to play a thir seeded Portsmouth Abbey, who had lost only one game during their season. With support from a large cheering section, the team was able to pull off a clos win and move on to the next round.Their opponent was Brooks,a team that was seeded only seventh but who had come on strong at the end of the seasor and had upset St.Sebastian's in the opening round of the tournament. Belmont Hill found themselves down at the half and Brooks extended its lead t double figures with just minutes left. But the lead quickly diminished as BHS engineered a remarkable comeback and with just over 10 seconds to go,a Chri Day Jumper put them ahead by one. Belmont thought they had pulled it off when a last second 3-point attempt by Brooks fell Short.Somehow, however,th ball ended up in the hands of a Brooks guard who was able to roll the ball over the rim and in, ending the Belmont Hill season as the buzzer sounded. Seniors, Sean Riley and Brian Langley, starting at point and off-guard respectively were able floor leaders, dishing out assists as well as providin some scoring. Ben Fritz, starting in the small forward slot, came up with crucial steals throughout the season helped with the rebounding load. Captain Pat Rettig started at power forward, and freshman Curtis Bolden started at Center and helped the team greatly with his strong rebounding and his ability to score from in close as well as from the perimeter.Coming off the bench,Chris Day and Lomax Edwards added quickness to both the guard and forward positions and provided critical baskets at the end of many games.Junior John Walsh helped with the rebounding and was strong in the low post where he went60% from the floor for the season. Freshman Dario Wilson was second only to Sean Riley in the 3-pointers made, had the highest 3-point percentage on the team, and was always on the floor at the end of close games when an outside threat was needed.Senior swing-man Mike Kelley an Senior sharpshooter Hadley Harris will be sorely missed next year for the examples that they set and for their positive attitude throughout the season.lunioi Gill Winn whose season was confused by an early ankle injury; and Sophomore Pascal Rettig will both look to provide a base for next year's inside game Thanks to Coach Bertelsen, Rony LaGuerre, and all the seniors for their great leadership and attitude, with a large group of returning juniors, a sophomore and 2 freshmen, next year's team will look to improve on this year's success.

Varsity Squash
The 1994 squash season ended in a boom with junior Campbell MacColl winning the New England Interscholastic tournament and senior Stephen Keys-Gravelis,senior Chad Rounds. Freshman Tim Brennan and senior Eric Sanders all capturing the consolation titles for their respective draws. The team finished the season with a 16-1 record which was largely due to the unrelentless play of Sanders, the consistency of Rounds and the sporadic upsets that Keys-Grevelis contributed. Coach Seely began the season nervous about the team's depth, as well as how his team would fair against the rest of the league and other non-league opponents. However uneasiness was soon transformed into confident anticipation following commanding victories by all players at the Jackson tournament, which was held in early December at the Brooks School, and which Campbell MacColl won for the third consecutive year. The team also captured the team trophy for the second time in three years. The team continued its march through the early part of the season, trampling over St. Georges, Middlesex, St. Pauls, Brooks, Groton, Pomfret, and Nobles. It seemed as if this years team would surely go undefeated until a strong Tabor squad destroyed such hopes by defeating Belmont Hill 3-2. The non-league loss was soon forgotten and the team rebounded to win its next eight matches. The highlight of the season occurred when the Belmont Hill team defeated a strong Deerfield team. This match exemplified the depth that coach Seely feared the team lacked, with crucial victories by numbers 4 and 5, Tim Brennan and Eric Sanders. The teams success was the result of hard work, good coaching and team unity, which led to a well deserved third place team finish at the Interscholastics. Unfortunately the team will graduate three of the top five players,as well as some J.V. players. The team will also have to focus on its strengths, MacColl and Brenna, and hope that some J.V. players will step up to the plate. Overall this was a season to boast about. by Campbell MacColl

Varsity Wrestling
This years wrestling squad had a successful year finishing with a 12-4 overall record (9-3 ISLI. Although hoping to achieve more in the league standings, the team won some tremendous victories over talented opponents. At 103 pounds, sophomore Kayvon Bina surprised the team by winning 14 dual-meet matches while losing only one. His quick shots and pinning combinations drove him to a 2nd place finish the Graves-Kelsey league tournament and a 4th place in the New England's. Junior Henry Paige contributed tremendously at 112 pounds posting a 14-0 record and finishing 2nd in the Graves and 5th in the New England's. For his efforts, he was selected as the team's MVP. At 199 pounds, sophomore David Silverman was vastly improved over last year, posting a 7-8 record using an aggressive style. Ben Stonberg had a season of highs and lows at 125 pounds earning a 9-6 record against very tough opponents. He will surely be a force in any weight class next year. Perhaps the most successful wrestler on this year's team was Paul Ryan, winning the Graves and placing 2nd in New England's at 130 lbs. His 12-1 dual meet record showed his consistently high level of wrestling as he dominated nearly every opponent. Ryan Hoffman had a tough year at 135 lbs due to a neck injury managing a 6-4 record. He returned weakened to the team for the league tournament but still managed to earn a 5th place. Senior Eric Cosman showed his strength against some of the toughest competition in any class earning a 13-3 record. An injury at the Graves left his season cut short, but it could not detract from his powerful performance. Captain David Parker followed Eric in the lineup at 145 lbs posting an identical 13-3 record. His crowd pleasing takedowns left many an opponent flat on their backs. Dave earned 4th place in the Graves-Kelsey. At 152 lbs, senior Captain Andrew Fuller pinned 6 opponents en route to a 6-0 league record only to be injured for the rest of the season against St. Mark's. Greg Galliagan valiantly filled in for the injured captain, fighting well against the best of the 152 weight class. At 160 lbs, Ben Choi was also sidelines by injuries after posting a 6-1 record. First year wrestler Peter Kelley filled in for Ben, earning valuable experience for next year. Brad Sicchitano provided great enthusiasm as the third of the team's tri-captains. A 10-4 record was a vast improvement for Brad,as he posted great victories over Loomis-Chaffee and Milton. Andrew Wright earned the most improved wrestler award by wrestling opponents weighing close to 20 lbs more than him. His 6-3 record earned him a trip to the New England tournament. At heavyweight Dan Egan won a huge match to beat Milton 36-30, while gaining tremendous experience. Seniors, Ben Bing, Brent Orr, and Nick Thompson, as well as a host of underclassmen served in supporting roles throughout the season driving the team to some memorable victories. Wins over Milton, Moses Brown, Loomis-Chaffee,and Brewster demonstrated just how far the wrestling program has come. The team would like to thank coaches Bradley, Hoffman, and Gorman for their unwavering support.

This year's Cross Country Ski Team began with the chore of rebuilding after several years of winning league championships and of placing at or near the top of Division II in the New England Championships. When our captain, Jeff Evans, fell prey to knee problems,we were without any senior skiers to start the season. What a pleasant surprise when we travelled to Craftsbury, Vermont and discovered a wealth of talent among our enthusiastic newcomers, Scott Feuer, Peter Salisbury, Todd Paratore, and Kevin Connors, all freshmen and sophomores. Coupled with the steady progress of veterans Courtney, Hamilton, and Stoddard, our neophytes made surprisingly steady progress and before mid-January we had a promising squad that began to perform very well in competition with thePublic schools at our weekly races at Weston Ski Track. As with any inexperienced team our performance was erratic at times, but we managed a first and two seconds in match-ups with Brookline, Newton North, Xaverian, Wellesley, and perennial Massachusetts Bay East Public School Champion Dover-Sherborn. A prolonged January thaw interrupted our momentum, but we resumed skiing in late January just in time to reestablish competition with the independent schools. After victories over BB&N, Middlesex, and Groton. In dual meets, we met at Groton on February 15th to settle the league title. After a slow start in deep snow,Courtney,Stoddard and Feuer picked off one skier after another while John Hamilton held off a late rush by two strong Groton skiers. Final results showed that we triumphed by a comfortable margin in achieving our sixth straight league championship. Facing stiffer competition a week later at the New England Championships at Putney, we managed a third place finish in Division II, racing well in the afternoon freestyle event, which is our strength. As the season ended, we found ourselves with a very credible record of 18 wins and 9 losses and every reason to be hopeful for further success in the coming years, for, in addition to the aforementioned talented novices, we have several middle schoolers who raced competitively with older high school opponents during the season. Seventh graders Al Smith and Evan Campisi and eighth graders Anthony Rowe and Nathaniel Wadsworth provide us with a steady stream of talent well into the future. In many ways, this has been one of the most gratifying season for me and Coach Rodger in a long time. I want to thank Coach Rodger for his excellent work with the younger skiers. His patience and expertise are invaluable assets; he's been responsible for developing many of our better skiers over the years. Also, thanks to Jeff Evans for his spirit and enthusiasm despite his inability to ski with us this year. Congratulations to Jack Stoddard and Jared Courtney, next year's captains. — Coach Fran Kirby

Alpine Skiing
After a second place finish last winter to Thayer Academy, the Alpine Ski Team made a tremendous comeback to win the ISL championship. With the absence of the great Dan Hunt (sabbatical), new head coach Patty Whitney and newcomer Anne Wade proved to have stellar coaching skills, taking a fairly young team to the head of the league against some fierce competition. The year, however, couldn't have gone as well if it weren't for the great leadership of the seniors on the team, Frank Gorke, Lars Hall, Pete Halby, and captains Jon Goldfuss and David Haley were all major contributors to the team, often taking the young skiers under their wing. Other varsity skiers included juniors Io Horsely and Lyle Yetman, sophomores Andrew Haley and Pat Brown, and freshman phenom Chip Franklin. The Haley brothers, David and Andrew, finished in the top five in the league, and both received all-league certificates.'95 was a great year for Belmont Hill's ski team, inflicting revenge on Thayer by beating them out by 12 points and having a great time doing it. Good luck to next year's team. Kick butt, guys! — David Haley

This year's hockey team started slowly and lost badly to a superior Alumni hockey team. John Grady gave an inspirational speech to the team and parents after the game. Captains Dan Sullivan and Todd Davis helped to change the attitude. The team won the next three games but lost in the finals of the Lawrenceville Tournament to a strong Taft team 3-0. Next the team travelled to Buffalo and the Nichols New Years' Tournament. With strong goaltending from Eric Almon, the team beat Nichols 15-21, Lawrence Academy 15-4 in 01'1, and Canterbury 3-1 to win the tournament for only the second time in ten years.Strong defensive play by Graham Morrell, Paul Mara, and Joe Flammia limited the opposition to only 2 goals a game. Forwards Brian Joyce, Bob Miele, Brett Wegner, Andrew Santonelli and Mike Maturo played well at both ends of the rink. In the game against Lawrence Academy,Tom Flynn scored the prettiest goal in overtime to win the game. Nicholai Bobrov and John Giannacopoulos set up this winning goal with superior passing. The season contained many highlights in January and February and we saw growth from Chris Tashjian, Mike O'Leary, Kirk McKeown, Rory Griffin, John O'Leary and David Witkin. Jake DeBoever came on strong in the goal and Dima Vasiliev played well after recovering from an injury. The team had impressive wins over St. Sebastian's 8-3 and Nobles 9-1. The final record was 20-7-1. We ended up beating every team we played except for Taft who we only played once. Graham Morrell has been elected Captain for next year. Coach Ken Martin

Intramurals BHS intramurals undertook a rebirth this year. This Renaissance seemed unlikely due to the retiring of IFL-Goof Puck-Int. Softball guru Ross Roberts. But others scrambled to regroup, enthusiasm swelled, and it was an all-around banner year. Media coverage abounded as The Panel featured a piece on the IFL, and The Front Row sports paper reported on the epic IBA-Weight Training grudge hoops match. Inter-Intramural competition reach an all-time high, as shown by the IFL vs. Tennis and the IBA vs. Weight Training matchups. In the former, the IFL proved its dominance in two weeks of grueling battles with the tennis teams, coming out on top. In winter action, the IBA embarrassed the Wright Trainers on two memorable occasions. Altogether, the BHS Intramural program may be returning to the heyday of the early '50's (see picture.) Despite failed efforts to launch an Intramural Bowling program, intramurals underwent much progress this year. At last, a sure fire status symbol on campus is a jacket accompanied by the lack of a varsity letter. IBA at its best

WEIGHT TRAINERS VS. IBA — THE GAME OF THE CENTURY By Ev Meagher The Front Row article from 2195. excerpted: ... the Intramural Basketball Association finally faced the arrogant weight trainers on January 26. Unfortunately for the muscleheads from downstairs,(referred to as moles in the IBA) poorly conceived insults and decade old mother jokes do not translate into baskets. Starting for Wachmeisters juggernaut was point guard Bill "Mad Dog" Abely. the IBA's equivelent of John Stockton. He shoots, he passes, he wears gray wool socks, he does it all. At center, there was Kevin Caruso, always strong in the low post, and guards Pat "P.C." Cramb and Matt Redmond put on a shooting clinic. lastly was Evan "The Worm" Meagher. who pulled down a game high 19 rebounds and served out 6 assists, second only to Abely's 14. The weight trainer's starting lineup consisted of Andy "The Bricklayer" Friedman, lay Carberry, and three guys named Moe. The game was actually fairly close until the score was 8-5. IBA. At this point, one of Friedman's moon shot rebounds had hit the side wall, and Pat Cramb inbounded the ball. The pass went to the IBA's backup center, Ivan "Deepak" Pirzada. Smothered by aggressive elbowing, Ivan passed over to Abely at the top of the key. A few weight training thugs clung to his legs like snails to an oak tree. With a roar,(or maybe it was a growl — I couldn't really see, what with all the blood) Bill ignored the "defenders" and took it straight to the hole. Abely's ferocious dunk over Evan Hoffman. Shaff, and half the weight trainer bench, was the turning point in the game. After that, the IBA coasted to an easy 23-12 win. "Victory as usual." said the IBA's human highlight film, Tom Nath. The IBA's easy victory was inevitable. and they are now searching for more worthy opponents.

INTRAMURAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE A WAY OF LIFE By Greg Galligan Panel article from 10/28/94, excerpted: ... the addition of Physics god Mr. Hoffman has added much needed spark to the team. Unconfirmed reports have suggested that Mr. Hoffman has taught his players how to increase the velocity of the ball to the speed of light. This year's talented group includes several two-year starters: Scott Stedman, Ivan Pirzada, Bill Abely, Pat Cramb, and John Westcott. One major transaction was the draft of seniors Justin Monahan and Brent Orr from Weight Training, for two sophomores and a freshman to be named later. The offense relies on the superior arm of Ivan, as well as the receiving skills of Patrick Cramb, who has been scouted by numerous college intramural coaches. The one weak point of the organization is the lack of depth in the line up. Last week All Star receiver Pat Cramb went down with Testitis, forcing Coach Hoffman to activate Scott Stedman, seen by many as the greatest blunder in IFL history. There is no doubt that the new leadership of Mr. Hoffman and some off-season recruits, that this team will win as usual.

Varsity Crew The season began with the realization that this would be the youngest team in years, but led by captain Frank Gorke the prospective hopefuls started double sessions during the second week of vacation. The racing season began with scrimmages against Exeter and St. Pauls in eights and versus Pomfert in fours. After these highly competitive races it appeared that this year's team would be strong despite their young age but that there would need to be some work done before the New England's in late May. When it finally came time for the racing season to really start, the four boats were finally beginning to take shape. The first race against BB&N saw the fourth and second boats win but due to the first boat loss, the Ducey Cup reboats won and it appeared that the boats were set. In the fourth turned to BB&N.In the Basset Cup against Nobles all four Jeff Lewis at stroke, oarsman were Ernest Sabine, Mark Vernazza, and Mike boat Stanley Watt was the cox and the Jared Courtney, Christian Eastman in bow. Third boat consisted of Mike Vallarelli, Burrows, Ian Bass, and Dan Commins. Feras Habal, Aaron Bateman, Jack Stoddard, Martin Pavlinic, and Brad Sicchitano made up the second boat and in the first boat was Mike Murray, Dave Haley, Frank Gorke, Pat Rettig, and Dave Bordeau. For the next race, the team traveled to the very rough race course at Brooks. Here it was only the third boat who came out victors. The final race saw all of the boats come out on top of St. Marks. Going into the New Englands saw all of the four boats well prepared. There all boats made the finals with almost no problems. It was a very good day as the team finished fourth in the team competition. The fourth boat came back from a disastrous start to finish fifth while both the second and first finished fourth, but it was the third boat, who overcame all the problems which it encountered almost throughout the entire season, and turned in the best finish a third. The 1996 team looks promising because there are very few departing varsity members and led by co-captains Dave Bordeau and Pat Rettig the team should do very well next May at the New Englands. A very special thank you to coaches Tim Wood and John Lindberg for all their hard work. Ian Bass

Varsity Lacrosse Although we were not able to win our fifth consecutive league championship, the varsity lacrosse team surprised many pre-season prognosticators with a 10-4 season (9-2 in the league), good for a second place tie with St. George's and St. Mark's. Playing one of the toughest schedules in New England, a young and inexperienced squad showed fine improvement as the season progressed, winning our last six games by convincing scores. Tri-captains Rory Griffin, Baxter Smith, and Brett Wegner were ably supported by senior midfielder Lars Hall, attackman Peter Halby, and goalie Nick Thompson in showing the rookies what high level lacrosse is all about. Returning junior attackman Dante Cantalupo, midfielder Andrew Santonelli, and attackman Campbell MacColl picked up some of the slack left by the losses of last year's stars. The largest group of rookies in years included juniors Paul Dolan, Matt Foley, Roger Limon and Andy Wright; sophomores Matt Shields, Kit Hughes, Andrew Haley, David Cantor, Liam McCarthy, Chip Cook, Mike Callahan, and Greg Lee; and freshman David Seeley; all of whom did a fine job. For the first time in a number of years, the team started the season with two losses— to Exeter 5-10 and Thayer 11-12. Four straight wins against I.S.L. competition led up to the Milton game and, perhaps,a piece of the title. Alas, it was not meant to be as Milton emerged victorious on their Alunni day by a 14-10 score. With another title out of the picture, the rest of the season was for pride and momentum, and the boys stepped up their play—among the key wins a thrashing of a tough Nobles team 16-7 and a crushing of Roxbury Latin 17-3. Rory Griffin was elected to the NESSLA Senior All-Start game as well as I.S.L. All-League, Baxter Smith and Campbell MacColl joined him on the All-League roster, with unsung hero, goalie Nick Thompson, selected as Honorable Mention. While the graduates will be sorely missed next year, there will be an unusually large number of returning veterans, led by Tri-Captains Dante Cantalupo, Ben Fritz, and Campbell MacColl — so the future looks very bright,The "Drive for Five" will continue.

Varsity Baseball Although we only finished 4th in the ISL, at 10-5, this year's varsity baseball team was probably the most feared line-up in the league, averaging 10 runs per game, and boasting seven players hitting .350 or better. We opened our season by trouncing Thayer 22-6(3rd in ISL) and then beating league champ Roxbury Latin 4-3 (8 innings) in one of the most memorable high school games this coach has witnessed in 25 years. Losses to Governor Dummer and St. Paul's brought us down to earth, but we went on to win 8 out of our last II, including two solid wins to close the season against Groton, 8-5, and BB&N, 9-0. In addition to the RL game there were several exciting wins, including a 14-12 win against Milton after being down 9-2 in the 1st inning, and 6-4 against Lawrence with all 6 of our runs coming in the 7th inning. Our offense was led by seniors Mike Kelley (.425), Captain Tom Flynn (.415 with 20 RBIs, All-League), Brian Joyce (.412 with 20 RBIs and 21 stolen bases, All League), Kevin Caruso (.400), and Brian Langley (.347). Other major contributors were sophomore David Ostuni (.378 and 19 stolen bases) and junior (co-captain elect) David Witkin (.359). Defensive standouts were senior Dan Sullivan in the outfield and junior co-captain elect Todd Davis at first base. Most of the pitching was handled by Kevin Caruso (4-1, 2.51 ERA, All-League), Mike Kelley (2-2, 2.88 ERA), and junior Greg Deranian (3-1, 3.04 ERA); additional pitching was done by Brian Langley and senior Ivan Pirzada. Other contributors to this successful season were seniors Chris Day and Dan Young, juniors John O'Leary, Keith Swan and Chris Tashjian, and sophomores Nick Haigh and David Prinn. I would like to thank Coach Chris Sweeney, for his invaluable assistance, Mr. Martin for his cooperation and support, Mr. Palmer for his tireless efforts with umpires and schedules, and Mr. Chip Tarbell for his expertise and dedication in providing us with the best baseball field in the ISL. Coach David Greer

Varsity Tennis With a new coach and five new members to the eight member squad, the varsity tennis team began its season unsure as to where they would stand in the sixteen member Independent School League season. When all the matches were completed, the team ended with another successful season finishing third in the league with a 12-3o record. The team was brought through the season by the leadership of three returning players. Stephen KeyesGrevelis, the team captain, played the difficult number one position throughout the season and finished with an Honorable Mention for All League players. Jesses Margolis and Ben Romney were the other two members returning from last year's squad and they each contributed at the top of the singles ladder, as well as playing on the doubles teams. Ben played number one doubles with Stephen, and Jesse helped out in the third doubles spot with varying partners during the season. The remainder of the team consisted of Fifth Formers Manny Makkas and Andy Apstein and Third Formers Tim Brennan,Cameron Lickle and Couper Samuelson. Manny contributed on the doubles teams and Andy Apstein played both doubles and number 6 singles. The Third Formers were big contributors to the success of the team and demonstrated the potential strength of the team in years to come. All three played in varying singles positions throughout the season, with Tim and Couper also playing as the number two doubles team. Couper Samuelson received the award for the Most Improved Player. Manny Makkas won the Henry B.Sawyer,Jr. Sportsmanship Award and Stephen Keyes-Grevelis received the award for Greatest Contribution to the team. Next year's co-captains are Manny Makkas and Ben Romney. Finally, the team would like to thank Mrs. Keyes, Mrs. Brennan, Mrs. Romney and all the mothers and fathers for their support and of course, for the refreshments at our home matches. Coach Ann Wade

Varsity Track At the outset of this season, we knew that last year's perfect (9-0) season would be nearly impossible to duplicate. With some of our most impressive athletes in recent memory lost to graduation, we were faced with developing a lot of raw, young, untested talent. With the addition of John Walsh and Jay Civetti and with veteran Robert Belle in the shot, discuss, and javelin we were able to present our competition with a formidable threesome during the dual meet season. The hard work of Niel Francisco in the high and intermediate hurdles gave us several victories in those events; his dedication set a positive tone for younger hurdlers like McCafferty, Sforza, and Houston. Curtis Bolden and Ted Giannocopoulos, quickly established themselves as our premier sprinters. The story of the season, however, was Ryan Hoffman, a junior. He was our most valuable and consistent performer throughout the spring. Undefeated in all of his dual meet competition, he accomplished the incredible feat of winning the 800, 1500, and the 3000 meter races at the ISL meet at St. Paul's on May 13th where the team finished a strong third. Only one other runner in the history of the league meet has ever equaled this performance. On the following weekend,on a very warm day at the New England Championship at Mt. Holyoke, he ran the 1500 and the 3000, winning both, and setting a school record of 4:05.5 in the 1500. In the process, he helped his team finish a very respectable 4th of 14 teams competing at the end of the season. With an overall record of 7 wins and 4 losses during a rebuilding year, much credit has to be given to the coaching staff. In that vein I would like to thank my excellent assistant coaches; Messrs. Fleming,Stewart,Gorman and Briones for their patience and expertise all season long. I would also like to congratulate next year's captains: John Walsh,Lomax Edwards and Ryan Hoffman. Coach Francis Kirby

Varsity Sailing
Led by captains Phil Canzano and Lyle Yetman, this year's sailing team started the season with plenty of talent but less experience in its young squad. Newcomer Ben Bing was the only senior on the team, with juniors Canzano, Yetman, and John Hamilton and sophomore Todd Paratore skippering in both the regatta and team events. Andrew Tosiello, Ben and Sam Stonberg, Bertrand Landel, and Schuyler Boylan all saw plenty of action as crews. In team racing we started with three losses to strong teams from Tabor, Barnstable, and Milton all of whom would go on to the final round in national competition. We then bounced back with victories against Naval Academy Prep and Bishop Connolly. In our next two matches against St. George's until a final tie-breaking race, and in the each team off improvement, holding dramatic showed Brewster, the team and tactics. Our strong record in the second excellent team marked by George's in a series beat St. final race of the season,we where we finished fourth place in Championships Racing England Team the New half of the season gained us a birth in the semi-final round. In the regattas, the team also showed strong improvement. In the semi-final round of the New Englands we finished in second place largely by muscling through a day of twenty mile an hour winds on the Charles. But a week later in the finals, we had trouble in light air and drizzle and finished a disappointing 15th in the group of thirty active schools sailing in New England. In the Massachusetts State Championships we showed strong improvement finishing 2nd out 26 schools and beating old rivals Milton, Barnstable, BBN, and Cohasset. Coach Christopher Zamore

Varsity Golf The 1995 season started out with seven returning golfers and three spots available for new players. There were twelve candidates vying for these spots and the competition was tough. The top three players who were selected were: Alex Tatum and Peter Kelly from the fourth form, and Conor D'Alton from the first form. We played a total of eighteen matches throughout April and May and won fourteen of them. We lost only two matches(one to Andover, which is not in our league)and tied two. With a 14- I 2 record in the ISL, we won the League Title for the second year in a row. Justin Monahan, the captain, played first throughout the season. Brendan Donoghue and Steve Ranere played two and three. Andrew Mingle, Peter Kelley, Alex Tatum, Aram Gupta, and Conor D'Alton rounded out the top eight. Positions nine and ten on the team were held by Seniors Jack Stanley and Joe O'Grady. This year we again went to the Duxbury Yacht Club for the one day ISL Tournament, the second to last Monday in May. This is an I8-hole stroke play, consisting of the top five golfers from the ten ISL schools that have golf programs. Belmont Hill won this tournament by 15 strokes with a total of 324.The top four scores from each team are counted. Belmont Hill's finishers were Justin Monahan with a 77, Brendan Donoghue with an 80, Andrew Mingle an 81, and Steve Ranere an 86. The top five golfers in this tournament are also given All-League Certificates. Justin Monahan and Brendan Donoghue both received these Honors. As there is only one senior (Justin Monahan) in the top eight places, the 1996 Golf Team should again be a strong contender in the League. Next year's captain will be Steve Ranere.
