Mr_ Donald Bradley

Enchanting, friendly, bald, enthusiastic, not-to-be-messed-with, kindhearted, bald, passionate, poetic, enlightened, bald; the list of adjectives describing Mr. Bradley is ongoing, but those select few will suffice. A true multi-dimensional man,he runs the boisterous Upper School, is the head of a juggernaut wrestling team, teaches cutting cage History courses, is a caring advisor and an even better friend. I am fortunate to have experienced him in all of these settings. As the head of the Upper School, Mr. Bradley keeps everyone in line, never allowing any minute blunder to slip past him unncpticed, like sneaking down to JAG before 3:05, speeding into the parking lot, or texting under the lunch-table. Whether in his Modern European history course or Vietnam War class, his unique style of teaching, a blend of imparting his vast knowledge, cracking jokes, debates, and film, creates a light yet operative atmo-sphere. On the mat, Mr. Bradley commands the unstoppable wrestling team. Over the coast four years, the "Original Bradley Slap" has lead them to true victory, four Doug Parker titles, four Dual-meet titles, four undefeated inleague records, four Graves Kelsey titles, and two New England titles in three years. Everyone can clearly see that he is deeply passionate about his work and dedicated to all those that comprise it. His busy day and several duties are curtailed by his constant concern for the wellbeing of the students and his colleagues on the hill. His cackle of a laugh is contagious. His advice arid guidance are equal to that of a world-class therapist. Mr. Bradley has formed incredible relationships with the members of the class of 2010, bonds that are cherished and appreciated. I want to attempt to express the warranted thanks to Mr. Bradley both personally and on behalf of the class for not only guiding us through our years here but also putting up with us all the while. -Jordan Gorelick

Mr.Gallagher stresses many strong principles, one of which is to give 110% effort both in the classroom arid on the field. He gives each student and player every bit of knowledge he has to offer because he truly wants an of us to succeed in life. Mr. Gallagher uses his greatest passion, baseball, to develop his players into men, whether it is by sharing his monthly newsletters or post game discussions. Mr.Gallagher is a gentlemen's gentleman,a true School Man. He coaches arid teaches with such great charisma and enthusiasm because he is truly invested in the overall growth of the Belmont Hill community. CIT) Anyone who has ever sat in Harold Prenatt's office—students deciding on courses for next year, parents fretting over college decisions, colleagues a little late getting their grades in—all 0000100 have been comforted by the little black and white sign prominently displayed on the front edge of his desk. Harold knows how to make all of them feel at ease, through his reassuring words that grow out of his forty-two years of dedication to boys and the school. With a smile,a joke,or a "Happy Birthday," Harold can make anyone's day.

K.!A

Harold recalLs his first reception to Belmont Hill when he overheard the librarian as she asked her helper,"Have you sccn that new music teacher? He has a beard!" From the day he was hired, Harold Prenatt has been a bit of an anomaly, his own man and a school man at the same time. Who else spends his long-awaited sabbatical writing a history of the school for the 75th anniversary celebration? Who else is willing to give up Sundays to oversee the Winsor and Belmont Hill production of the Panel? And who else has to decide whether to drive the vintage Mercedes or the baby blue Cadillac to school? Harold Prenatt has been a part of all he has surveyed at Belmont Hill: Art Department chairman, teacher of Art History and Mechanical Drawing, Cum Laude advisor, even weight training guru. But for two decades of alumni, Harold was the music man, leader of the glee club, holiday concerts, faculty shenanigans, and chapel-wide sing-alongs, with selections from the songbook that he himself authored. Then, one day in 2004,came a school meeting when the plans for the new music building were announced. The architects showed slides, the donors pledged their support, and the committee members, including Mr.Prenatt, were applauded. He was halfway down the aisle on his way back to his seat when he glanced up to PRENATT MUSIC CENTER see one more slide projected on the front wall of the chapel—the bronze plaque announcing GIVEN BY the name of the new building: the Prenatt Music A FRIEND OF THE SCHOOL Center. The look on his face, a mix of stunned IN HONOR AND RECOGNITION surprise and humility, will not be forgotten by those who were there. HAROLD PRENATT With this present tribute, undoubtedly not the last, we extend appreciation and good wishes to a man who has served all of us so well. Many thanks, Mr.Prenatt. Donald Stewart(1967)

With all the missed deadlines, the scrambling to take pictures, and the long hours, it can sometimes be difficult for the yearbook staff to appreciate the yearbook until it is finished. Arid, for those people riot on the staff, it is just as hard to imagine all the work that goes in to making a successful yearbook. Luckily for all of us, we now hold the finished product in our hands, and can now reminisce on the year, arid for seniors, on our long journey at Belmont Hill. Our goal with this yearbook was to provide a detailed account of this year at Belmont Hill and all of our roles in it. For the seniors we hope it will serve as a unique window into all of our incredible accomplishments from this unique era in our lives. I hope it will provide laughs arid good memories, and far into the future, maybe even stir up some tears. It has been an honor to be a part of this senior class. While the unprecedented camaraderie arid leadership is spoken of each year,it is truly inspiring to actually be a part of it. To everyone who contributed to this yearbook, whether it be working on the actual book,or participating in the events that made this yearbook possible, we thank you. Belmont Hill is definitely an incredible place, arid moving on is bitter-sweet. We will always look back on this yearbook arid our years at Belmont Hill with a sense of accomplishment along with a tinge of nostalgia. Good luck to all of you who will continue on at Belmont Hill, and especially to all of the graduating seniors, wherever you will go. JoshSwartz and Nate Yuen. Editors-inhief

Welcome from the Head of School As Head of School at Belmont Hill, I welcome you to the 2010 edition ofthe Sundial. Every school year has its ups and downs, its moments of celebration and sadness. 2009-2010 is no exception. As a school we enjoyed great moments together, from hearing the inspiring story of Mark Inglis, the first and only dual-amputee ever to summit Mt. Everest, to the raucous and still-unbelievable Winter Classic at Fenway Park. It was special enough to be able to have Belmont Hill play hockey against historic rival St. Sebastian's at Fenway — but no team comes back from 5-2 in the last seven minutes to win in overtime...do they?! The daily rhythms of the school also provided direction, purpose, and good energy and morale. In spite ofthe historic challenges posed by the nation's economy, Belmont Hill began the year with a record enrollment, and signs continue to be encouraging that this school for boys has a mission that will keep it strong. Yet the school faced into great sadness when 39-year veteran teacher Mr. Goodband passed away in February, after a valiant 20-month battle with cancer. Mr. Goodband reminded us all of the core values ofthe school: honesty, integrity, hard work, willingness to help others without complaint, the importance of good humor and a good laugh, both toughness and tenderness in good measure. Facing the retirement of 43-year veteran Mr. Prenatt as well, Belmont Hill has dealt with loss and change. But all this is part of life, and the life of a school, and Belmont Hill has faced into both the highs and the lows with clarity and perspective. Thus, as you leaf through the pages of this yearbook, we see another good year in the life ofthis good school. To all readers: stay close, and stay in touch.

Dr. Richard I. Melvoin

Message From The President Every fall, Dr. Melvoin tells us of the man who was commissioned to build a house, and while he did build it he took every shortcut to ensure that it was ofno hassle to him. As we all know by now, he was building his own house. While Dr Melvoin tells this story with the message of not cheating yourself, or undermining your own efforts, I believe there may be another more meaningful message that accompanies this story. The reason that I believe this is because looking back on my four years here, I see that it is almost impossible to cheat ourselves, because we only have the finest quality materials to use. No,I am not speaking about the facilities and technology our school has, I am instead referring to the most precious material that a community can have, its community. It is the community is what drew me here four years ago, and has continued to draw me every morning when my alarm goes off at 5:30. All ofthe teachers, all 420 something students, but most importantly the 80 seniors of2010 are the reason I go here. It is the collage of students with their varying personalities, stories, and traits that has hopefully built a strong house in each of us. So as we look back, ten or twenty years from now,and we use this book as a catalyst for our memories, what will we think of? We will certainly remember Caldwell scoring the overtime winner at Fenway, or Kevin's goal in the New England's. We will remember skating on the outdoor rink between classes. We will remember cramming for Bio, and grinding out the U.S. History term paper. Hopefully on top ofthese events in our time here, we will remember what it felt like to be at Belmont, the bonds we shared with each other and with the school. Maybe this sense oftogetherness was never felt more in what may be one of our more vivid and sad memories, the tragic passing of Mr. Goodband. And while his death is saddening, hopefully we can all take refuge in what came out of it. On the Tuesday of his funeral, we were lucky enough to see the true spirit ofthe school. As we packed St. Joseph's, we became aware of a fundamental truth of the school, the fact that we are there for each other. That is really all I want for the Class of2010 to take from this; that we are truly always there for each other. The house we have built in our time here is strong as we have built it together, and hopefully it will be a house that we continue to use. So as we move on to our different pursuits, remember that you have an entire community supporting you. Thank you all, Tom Muse

Cornrnunitg rvieR Trip to India: Working with -"N-r)il Train" Over spring break. 15 Belmont Hill boys and three faculty members traveled to Varana vice-learning trip, working with The Smile Train, an international medical service group helping children affliced with cleft palates and facial disfigurement. They enjoyed a stunning boatride along the Ganges. witnessing the burning Ghats and seeing a Fire Puja ceremony. The following day was spent at three Smile Train facilities. "The welcome from the folks at Smile Train and the three facilities was overwhelming," said Director of Global Education Chris Kolovos, who, along with David Hegarty and David Goff, led the trip. "They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and useful!- Mr. Kolovos reported that he led a roup to G.S.

Memorial Hospital and toured the hospital, met patients. observed cleft su of the wards a soothing shade. Boys also designed and created posters. and followed one patient and family from pre-op through post-op. They also spent a morning at Delhi Public school, interacting with students who came in on a holiday just to be with them. There was time for sightseeing as well, including a train trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. They even saw a Bollywood movie! "Our days in Varanasi with Smile Train were life changing." Mr. Kolovos said. "The group had a chance to reflect on our time there, and thank our hosts at a farewell ceremony. I think one of the Belmont hill boys put it best when he said,'We came here to help you, but in the end, you helped us.-

ARSITY SOCCER 2009

Soccer Coach's Corner 2009 *le 2009 soccer season turned out to be one of the most competitive seasons in ISL history. With a heavily ;senior teamBH had high expectations. Unfortunately the lack of scoring made it very difficult to gain any momentum and the team finished with the most ties of any BH team with a record of 5-5-6. The coaches were forced to make some adjustments in the line up in order to compensate for the lack of scoring. Senior midfielder and team MVP Robert Cahill had to take a more offensive role by moving to forward. Robert finished the season with 11 goals and was named all ISL selection. The midfield was solid with tri-captain Sam McQuillan anchoring the center spot. Tri-Captain Marco Martellini and Chris Ivsin were also instrumental in the midfield. Tri-captain Birin Padam and Jake Mandlekorn did a nice job at forward along side outside midfielder Jordan Gorelick. After graduating the entire back 4 the previous season, Charles Butte and new corner Peter Bolte had a solid season at center back. Junior Dylan Johnson was solid in goal and gained some vauable experience. Captains for next year will be Alec Bullen and Sam Meyers, both of them had great seasons. This is a sad time of the year when we have to say goodbye to all of the seniors who have contributed throughout the years. Heartfelt best wishes go to: Sam McQuillan, Jordan Gorelick, Jake Mandelkorn, Chris Ivsin, Birin Padam, Ben Porter, Chris Meckel. Robert Cahill, Marco Martellini, Peter Bolte, Charles Butte and Michael Gangemi. They have been a terrific group to work with, and will surely be missed. I also , Goalie Coach Montanaro for their would like to give special thanks to Coach Goodband, Michael Grant constant dedication and wisdom. qb .

i Facing down intense competition, rain, mud, falls. mountains, viruses, cramps, bronchitis, shin splints, tendonitis,"runner's runs.” and a seemingly impossible workout regimen, the Belmont Hill cross country team emerged from the fray and established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the ISL. Suffering only one loss in the regular season, theteam closed the season with two strong championships, defeating every team in the ISL, including four victories over Roxbury Latin. The team was lead by captains Andrew Reed. Colin Egan, and P.J. Lee, and by Coaches Trautz, Kirby, and Rice. Coach Rice, a new addition to the team, eagerly led the runners with effervescent energy and endless care, always friendly, excited, and encouraging. Coming off a final regular season win on a flat and quick, albeit treacherously twisted. Middlesex course, at \\ hich the team defeated BB&N. Lawrence, and the host school, they headed back the following Friday to challenge the league at the ISL Championships. Heading into the race tied with St. Paul's for the best regular season record, at one loss, all eyes were on the seemingly upstart group of talented Bel moniliill runners. The team flew across the finish line in second place, barely losing to a slightly swifter Groton team. while ousting the perennial favorite St. Paul's. Three runners, Eddie Harvey, Ian Meyer, and Matt Ricotta, placed in the top fifteen. The following weekend, at the New England Championships, the team slogged its way though one of the slickest, muddiest courses in recent memory at the lately-rained-upon Roxbury Latin School, finishing fourth amongst tough competition. with Ian, Eddie, and Matt earning All New England titles. All told, this year's squad of distance runners, guided by the always-entertaining Coaches Kirby and Trautz, and pushed along by Coach Rice's intensity and spirit, finished a remarkable season, made even more outstanding by the fact that six ofthe top nine runners will return next fall. After three intense months, the team capped off the season on a biting winter afternoon with an excellent set oftimed miles, even quicker than those run under the balmy earlySeptember sun. Thus, the team looks ahead to even greater improvement and achievement next year, helped along b-jritalented roster ofcurrent JV runners, including Joe Trodennan,Tom Sommers, Sam Arthur, Jimmy Kelleher, and several others. Also joining is a squad of burgeoning Middle School stars, expected to greatly bolster an already imposing lineup, provided they get their summer running in. Through all of their training, the achievements and spirit of this season will continue to move all of the runners forward."Stay strong, drive the legs, pump the arms. Dig Deep."

feels like just yesterday that we all set foot on the Belmont Hill campus for the first time. Some of us came in as baby faced 7th graders, others as more mature 9th graders, and even some as nineteen-year-old juniors. No matter how we got here, our time hasn't been easy. We have had to claw, rip, fight, battle and even bite(Hey Tray)our way through here. Despite all this, we have managed to make memories and friendships that will last us a lifetime. In order to do this story justice, we have to go back to where it all began... Form I: As soon as we got to Belmont Hill on the first day a few things became very clear. Jordan was smaller than everyone, and JD was bigger than everyone. Mr.. Sweeney terrified all of us with his "who is going to get the first hour?" speech, only to be outdone by Mr.. Folan's explosion at Burgess because Ian let his bag fall off of the bus. When it came time to elect our first president, Ugi offered us all Coke, Todd promised us all Live Strong bands, but Marco ended up winning. Koeniger won a dance contest at our first ever dance as a class, Mr. Sagalowski was a mystery to all of us, and Mr. Kaplan promptly informed the basketball team we all needed to grow up (with hand gestures). Not to be outdone, Schimmel ripped Jay Sprague's Live Strong band to prove a point during basketball practice. The year would not have been complete without Clint letting us know he came to Belmont Hill because he was smarter than all his teachers at his old school. We lost one kid known as Sebastian at the end of the year but no one really knows why. Overall, the year was pretty uneventful.

58

Form II: Eighth grade began with the move to the upstairs study hall, and the feeling that we were now more important. We were wrong. Mrs. Doherty threatened all of us with dozens of hours, and IPS was worse than we could have ever imagined. However, someone managed to lighten the mood with an anonymous question to Ms. O'Connor on anatomy day. Most of us enjoyed Spanish class with Senor and the occasionally cameo of Doc. Arnold; others had to suffer through Spanish Gamma "AP" with Mr... Harder. We had a bunch of additions to the grade- Bolte, Blake, Cookson, Butte, Clough, Dirks, Dow,HT,Ogo,Plumb, Trachy, Adrian, and Hickey. On the athletic fields I managed to drop my title of"fat Pat" and Jay beat out Blake for the starting running back spot on the football team. Most of our grade had a bonding experience at Starr's Bar Mitzvah, where we learned that some parents danced just like we did. We made our pilgrimage to New York, which was overshadowed by the rumor that Mr... Brodie and Mr... Gallagher never slept. What really put the icing on the cake, though, was Ugi going fishing on the bus for his phone. None of this mattered though, as we were soon to become the heads of the middle school.

Form III: By the time freshman year rolled around we were collectively a pretty big deal. Most of us had managed to make it through puberty • unscathed, and the end of Latin was near for most of us. Again, we had another large group of additions to the grade- Bashiru, Both Reeds, Desbois, Egan, Finigan, Gangemi, Greenough, Jang, Kuder,PJ, Gordo, Momperousse, Muse, Birin, Hib, Aman, Trustey, Arien, Burch, Caldwell, Garret and Cummings. Our class had a great bonding experience at camp Beckett. We all certainly remember the foursquare. When we returned, we were immediately informed that we were "the leaders of the middle school" and that we were supposed to act like it. We now took classes like Leadership with Mr. Tredennick, and Ethics with Mr. Melvoin, that were meant to help us be more responsible and make better choices at school. The addition of many of these new faces created a whole new atmosphere in our grade. Vaughn stopped being funny, Manning showed JD his brain in Latin class, and OC got his nickname. Amidst all this, our school was rocked by tragedy toward the end of the fall when senior Tom Fuss took his own life. Our grade did not fully understand all of this, but banded together and found strength in each other to get through this tough time. Most of the class made the trip down to DC, where we almost had a run in with some Fessenden kids who were looking to scrap, and where Clint received some interesting phone calls. As the year came to an end, we looked forward to no more Mr. Armstrong, no more X-block study halls, and no more Mrs. Doherty. We were off to the upper school. 60

Form IV: Joining the Upper School we now had many more privileges: sneakers, free periods, and snack bar. We had three more additions to the grade in CT,Tones, and Sevak, along with the departures of Kuder and Trustey from the previous year. Many of us began playing varsity sports for the first time, while others took AP classes, and even more took part in "pencil wars". We quickly found out that this year would be jam packed with work, which took form in Bio projects and English profiles. However, what this year meant to our class can be summed up in two simple words: Robert Rose. The legend only taught one English class, but meant more to our grade then anyone could possibly imagine. For example, almost everyone got to know him on a personal level (mostly from hiding under his table during English

class). We were sadly only able to enjoy the presence of Mr. Rose for one year for he felt it would be best to pursue his career as a teacher elsewhere. When springtime rolled around, varsity sports were no longer desirable. Rather,jv lacrosse was in session, so little else mattered. With a renegade crew lead by Caldwell, Hickey and Cummings, the jv lacrosse team managed to find themselves in the penalty box, and Mr. Melvoin's office, more than they were on the field. As the year came to an end, we sadly lost many characters from our grade. Garret, Vaughn, Ugi and Cummings all found new schools for one reason or another. No matter, our grade was moving along into the biggest grind of our lives.

61

Form V: When junior year began, we all knew it was going to be the most important academic year. Surprisingly, our class still had two more additions to make. We were luckily able to acquire Bobby Avakian in a trade with the class of 09' for, well nothing, and we had another Bedford addition, Ryan Paganetti. Ryan's athletic prowess certainly helped, but his conversa-

tions with Ian, and his BFF Clint were also great entertainment. With the additions of Ryan and Bobby, we also lost Koeniger and Jang to China, and Ned to Italy. This was also the year that our class got to know Mr. Butler. As the head adivsor, teacher of four chemistry classes and a two sport varsity coach, Mr. Butler got to know our class as a whole very well, maybe even a little too well. But by the end of the year, after the Wolfpack had tormented the school, and dance parties finished, we had finally made it to senior year.

Form VI: Going into senior year, most of us thought it was going to be a breeze. A hard fought second place finish at the New England's was followed by Belmont Hill's best showing to date at the Prep Nationals as well as the recognition of two more All Americans. Six seniors were the backbone of this team which earned a 20-1 record with the only defeat coming at the hands of the eventual New England Champions, Northfield Mt. Hermon. Jordan Gorelick (130 lbs.), HT Kotchinian (140), (215) had but one league Nick Ogonowsky(145),Paul Shea(160),Peter Bolte(171)and Kevin Travaline loss between them all season long and every one of them wrestled in the Graves Kelsey finals. After that, a balance offour Juniors - Matt Ricotta(135),David Kohler(152),Dara Alizadeh(189)and John Bergantino(285) — and four sophomores — Pranay Bose (103), Andrew Raftery (112), Cam Semi(119) and Jeff Ott(125 — completed a most formidable lineup from top to bottom. Highlights of the season included a win over Roxbury Latin that commenced with a 37-0 run before RL won a match. That victory set up a showdown for the ISL Dual Meet crown the following week against Brooks in the Fritz Gymnasium that coincided with the celebration of 55 years of wrestling at Belmont Hill. The gym was packed as Belmont Hill delivered a 63-9 victory. Over 300 past and present wrestlers, parents and coaches returned for this event and later enjoyed a superb dinner and video presentation prepared by our friends at the Alumni House. The next three weekends were all tournaments. At the Graves Kelsey, hosted by BB&N,Belmont Hill placed 11 in the finals and crowned six champions — Gorelick, Kotchinian, Ogonowsky, Kohler, Bolte and Ott who was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. The next week at the New England's hosted by Lexington Christian, Belmont Hill had a superb final round as ten placed and four champions were crowned. Ott and Kotchinian were repeat champions and Ott was again recognized as the Outstanding Wrestler. Bolte and Ogonowsky were also New England Champions. A week later at Prep Nationals at Lehigh University, Kotchinian and Ott both won All American status as Kotchinian placed 7th and Jeff Ott became the first Belmont Hill Prep National Champion. At the year end banquet, Jeff Ott and Nick Ogonowsky were recognized as having made the "greatest contribution" to the team and were awarded the Gilbert S. Jordan Trophy. Peter Bolte and David Kohler shared the William "Bingo" Emerson award for "greatest improvement" and HT Kotchinian and Joe Sullivan were honored for their sportsmanship with the Henry B. Sawyer plaque. •

HUCIch.Y SEASON 201 u his year's final record for the varsity hockey team was 21-8-2. The season ended with the team being anked fourth in New England, but we lost to Westminster 2-1 in the first round of the playoffs. The team made the New England tournament for the fifth year in a row,and they finished third in the ISL. The team was lead by senior captain John Caldwell and assistant captains, Nick Tierney and Brandon McNally. he team had several highlights during the year one of which was a game against Choate at the awrenceville tournament, which ended as a tie and then was decided in a twelve-man shootout, which we ultimately lost. Next, the team came together during the Nichols-Belmont Hill tournament and won the ournament with a 4-0-1 record and defeated South Kent in the finals,6-3. n January 5, we played St. Sebastian's at Fenway Park on a Tuesday night. With the team losing 5-2 with six minutes to play, we started a memorable comeback by scoring three goals to tie the game—the last one vith five seconds to go. John Caldwell scored the winner in the first shift of overtime. This was a once in a ifetime experience for all, and fans, players and coaches will never forget that night! enior leadership came from Kevin Connors,Brendan Fadden,John Caldwell, Nick Tierney and Derek etcalfe. We are looking forward to next year when we return all of our defensemen sophomores: Joe cNamara,Sean Connors,Soren Hanson,Terry Goguen and freshman Matt Grzelcyk. Our forwards should e strong with returning juniors Brandon McNally, Mike McNamara,Alex DeBaere and sophomores Devin lbert,Jim Vesey,Stephan Brennan,Sean Gustin and freshman Mike Najjar. David Cunningham is our eturning goalie for next year. ohn Caldwell,Brandon McNally, Mike McNamara and Devin Albert were named All League, and onorable mention went to Joe McNamara,Matt Grzelcyk,Jim Vesey and Brendan Fadden. This year's eam was a highly skilled with great passing and skating. These players knew how to share the puck nd made some of the finest goals I have ever seen. The team displayed great character in winning some vertime games, which made the boys mentally tougher as he season progressed. e had some of the most exciting games in recent history including a victory over Tabor in the last regular eason game, and this assured us of a spot in the New England tournament. I enjoyed coaching this very ompetitive and young team as much as any team in recent history. I am looking forward already to oaching next year's team, which will be led by captains Brandon McNally and Mike McNamara.

Varsity Basketball 2009-10 This team experienced a mixed season characterized by many exciting close contests. The boys arrived with a very determined and positive attitude, even though many players from last year who had provided offense and rebounding skills had graduated. The team finished with a 12-13 record overall, but by winning our last three league games of the season we finished with a winning league record of 8-7. Though nobody was pleased with a losing record, this was an enjoyable team to coach. In spite of some limited size and experience, the team played a very aggressive man-to-man style and looked to run whenever possible. Their tenacity and heart was reflected by the fact that we had four concussions; the kids were willing to step in and take a charge or to hit the floor. We started strongly with a wonderful win over a very talented Rivers squad. Trailing by 16 deep into the second half we went on 19-2 run to finish the game, for a thrilling one-point victory. Two more victories followed before we succumbed to a rash of injuries that derailed our plans. However, many were ready to step up and for the most part, I was extremely pleased with the players' effort. They practiced and played hard and improved steadily throughout the year. The team finished on a positive note by winning the last three games of the season. Two students earned all-league recognition: Marco Martellini and Zach Williams. Marco also received the team MVP award, Robert Cahill won the Carl Amon Award for unselfishness, sportsmanship and concern for team play. Jeff Schimmel received the Henry Sawyer Award for sportsmanship. The contributions of assistant coaches, Al Murphy and Shaun Jayachandran, cannot be overstated. The team worked hard and enjoyed playing together as a result of Al's and Shaun's tireless contribution to building team cohesion. They brought great energy, motivation and enthusiasm. The captains for next year are Tyler West and Harry Glor. The future looks bright as we will return eleven of this year's players. A special thanks to trainers Dennis Chin and Ed Doherty who kept us patched together — no small feat this season! Thanks also to Tom Kaveney and the BHS maintenance staff for all their help in the gym.

The 2009-2010 Belmont Hill Alpine Ski Team enjoyed yet another winning season this year with an impressive undefeated record for its varsity squad. This performance secured its sixth-consecutive ISL title as it edged out some tough competition from rival schools. In both slalom and giant slalom competition courses, the Belmont Hill boys always established themselves as the team to beat, and they thoroughly enjoyed defending this reputation each and every week at Nashoba Valley. Highlights for the regular season include an incredible amount of top-ten individual places for BH: senior captain Chris Meckel had four of them (he won one race outright),junior Jeff Cameron had three, freshman Mike Remondi had two, and eigth-grader Sabri Eyuboglu wowed coaches and competitors alike with four, one of which was a run-away win in a slalom course where his combined time was over a second faster than the nearest finisher. The varsity team welcomed Will Utzschneider, Dan Remondi, Danny Anderson, Alex Busch, Tucker Gordon, and Albert Kiladjian into its ranks with significant contributions to the team's accomplishments. A special hats-off goes to senior Tri-Captain Hib Schenck who overcame incredible injury suffered last year to partake fully in this season's races. He willingly competed and genuinely supported his teammates with more aplomb than his coaches would have otherwise expected. Finally, there are many people to thank for the successful season. Thanks to assistant coach Tyson Trautz for his unwavering suport and organizational skills throughout the winter. As always, we would like to offer infinite gratitude to all the parents who were so supportive in so many ways - outfitting the team, feeding the team, shooting photos of the team, and transporting the team! We bid farewell to our graduating seniors and turn our attention to next winter when, lead by new captains Jeff Cameron and Nick Reichheld, our younger talent will step into the limelight and hopefully guide this team to another ISL championship. Coach David Goff

Belmont Hill won its first trophy in a NEPSAC xc ski championships placing third in the A division at the annual championships held this year at Gould Academy. Belmont Hill was the only day school and the only school without its own cross country trail facility at the event. Our team trains mainly on man made snow at the Leo J. Team captain Andrew Reed won the boys' freestyle race, the first such victory in BHS history, with 9th grader Ian Meyer placing 7th. Juniors Eddie Harvey (12th), Taylor Shortsleeve (21), and Chris Gilligan (25)all skied very fine races helping the team place second in this event. In the afternoon classic relay, the team placed fourth helping them a third place finish overall. VARSITY SQUASH 2009-2010 I told the boys before the New Englands, "This is the best team I have ever been associated with in any sport." I stand by my words as I write this synopsis today, a few weeks after the conclusion of the season. Our team's accomplishments mirror last year's in terms of wins and losses, yet the statistics don't reveal our tremendous improvement, and that we were extremely close to winning a national title. By their own admission, we gave Episcopal Academy, the repeat champions, their toughest match in the National semifinals. Our final resume again reads most impressively: Jackson Tournament Champions ISL Champions 4th Place HS Nationals 2nd Place New England Interscholastic Tournament 21-2 Dual Match Record 4 players voted Ml-League ISL (Kirby, Columbia, Mullaney, and Quinn) Julian Kirby unanimously voted ISL MVP and Globe All-Scholastic We began our journey in Philadelphia, playing 6 grueling matches over the weekend in a pre-season round robin against the top teams in the country. We fared quite well collectively, and Edward Columbia, our ninth grade #2, was stellar in winning all six of his contests. We returned home and blitzed everyone, including a 6-1 thrashing of a very strong Tabor team in early December. We were simply too strong for our rivals in the ISL and we powered through the league without losing a single individual match. George Seeley couldn't remember this ever happening and our phenomenal record speaks to the utter depth and strength of our team. We avenged last year's loss to Haverford School and it was rewarding to soundly defeat them in the National quarterfinals this year---a strong statement of our improvement. Sprinkled among our team successes were some sensational individual accomplishments. Julian Kirby, our long-term #1, won the Princeton JCT event in the under 19 division and Edward won his division in the under 17's—tremendous victories given their respective fields consisted of the best players in the nation. Two-Year Captain Ryan Mullaney was sensational at #3, Most-Improved Award winner Liam Quinn was a force a #4,and senior veterans Trevor Truog, Chris Ivsin, and Peter Yanofsky all played superbly at positions #5,#6, and #7 respectively. Michael Nahill yet again was a crucial member of our team as the injury bug hampered us for most of January. Each boy played a critical role in our team's success. Six players out of seven made it to the finals in their divisions at the New England's--a tremendous team achievement. I'm grateful to this year's senior class. They represented Belmont Hill very well at both the Varsity and JV level on and off the court. We graduate 10 players out of 16 in the program and they leave a most impressive legacy. I can't thank George Seeley enough for his tremendous dedication to the program he founded and we'd be rudderless without him. Thanks also to Coaches Shaheid and Naimant Khan for their huge contributions to our overall success. I shall remember this group of young men fondly and they should all take pride in having been part of a very special team—arguably the best squash team in the history of Belmont Hill Squash. That's truly saying something. 81

r. Gary Hall,Director ofFinance and Operations, steps down at the end ofthis school year, ending 25 years of service at Belmont Hill. His impending departure will be felt as a great loss to the school community. In his announcement of Mr. Hall's plans to the faculty and staff, Head of School Richard Melvoin warmly referred to him as an extraordinary leader of this school."All of us have benefited in innumerable ways from Gary's stewardship of this institution. He has worked extraordinarily hard for Belmont Hill, and the number of areas in which he excels is remarkable. He will be greatly missed." As the Director of Finance the senior administrator of departments.Hisresponsibilities budget and annual financial the physical plant and of the crews, food service, and summer land and facilities planning, the Investment and Facilities Trustees. He further serves as the Town of Belmont and the and his wife Jane, a teacher in Hill parents; their son Nick is a "Two special accomplishments central role he played in nofewer projects, and the 1990's on campus," adds Harold has cared genuinely for the athletic environments here at

and Operations, Mr. Hall is Belmont Hill support staff in all have also included the school's management, oversight of maintenance and housekeeping programs,as well as long-range and working closely with Committees of the Board of the school's chief liaison with school's neighbors. Mr. Hall Arlington, are also Belmont member of the Class of 2003. of Mr. Hall's tenure are the than eight major construction implementation of technology Prenatt, school Registrar. "He quality of our work, study, and school.".

Working tirelessly to ensure smooth running of the school with his behind-the-scenes efforts, Mr. Hall has long been admired by the faculty and staff. Few students, however, have had the opportunity to interact with Mr. Hall. But this writer has been fortunate to have interviewed Mr. Hall several times in the past years. Sitting in the same chair at the same conference table in his office high above the dining room, just as before, I conducted perhaps my last interview with him. On his desk in the corner of his office stood two computer monitors flashing, on his conference table paperwork covering end to end. Mr. Hall seems always busy, yet he was gracious to take the time to sit down and talk about his retirement and his years at the Hill. "One of the most vivid memories is having seen the roof of the theater catching fire a few summers ago..1 was here on campus. I looked out the window and saw lightning strike the roof of the theater, and it started smoking," recalled Mr. Hall, looking out the window, pointing to the exact spot on the roof. When asked why he planned to step away this spring, he replied,"The timing is good because I won't be leaving in the middle of something." Making sure that Belmont Hill is in a good place when he leaves has once again demonstrated Mr. Hall's dedication and commitment to the school. Good luck, Mr. Hall, and thank you for all your contributions since 1985. You will be greatly missed. by Jay Po,'11 236

As the first crabapples burst into pink on the brick walk out side my studio, it's my turn to say thank you. Thanks to Nathan and Joshua for their continued effort and persistent good will towards the process of building this book. Thanks to Aman and Nick and all the photographers who patiently dogged the lists of faculty and staff to include everyone, and thanks to the juniors who cut their teeth on this year's book to prepare for next year and the creation of their book. This was a particularly good bunch, and though I'll miss the seniors, this upcoming group is going to be great. Thanks also to the parents and siblings whose support in the Families section gave us the custom cover and the extra three weeks we needed to slog to the end. 76% of the senior families participated: a record! Thanks to my colleagues on the Faculty who gracefully responded to my endless requests for images and write ups. Thanks to Dan Butler and the IT crew for smoothing out the technical hurdles with good humor. This book really took the whole village that is Belmont Hill to create. I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

liff was the Science Department Head when I came to Belmont Hill in the Fall of 1987. I remember asking him to sign a purchase order to get some wax pencils to mark glassware. His response was to get some crayons. "They work just as well and we have a tight budget", he said. As a Department Head he was frugal and practical. He was also a wonderful colleague. He taught two sections of Regular Biology and I taught the Biology AP course. I always knew he wanted to teach a section of the AP,and about ten years later he did. It was good for me, because as Cliff said,"he always carried me." Cliff embraced technology early. He convinced me to use Powerpoints. I finally did after two years. He embraced the web and all of its wonders. Only this past Fall did I start using u-tube and videos from Discovery Channel and NOVA as part of my classes. What a tremendous difference it made in my class! Cliff was my mentor in teaching and as a department head. He was always fair and treated everyone with respect. He often said that the Science Department was the best department on campus. If that was the case, then he was a major part of that. We all enjoyed working with him. We will miss him. By Hans Wachtmeister

hen I arrived at Belmont Hill in the fall of 1978 after teaching eight years in Connecticut, Cliff was already a seven-year BHS veteran. Our personal and professional relationships then grew during the 32 years that we were together. It was actually our personal relationship that was established almost immediately; he and Ruth lived in Needham two minutes from Route 128 on one side while Dee and I were in Dedham two minutes on the other side of 128. He and I were exactly the same age, and our children essentially grew up together, as Kristen, Cliffie and Ryan were roughly the same ages as our three children, Danielle, Dina and David. During the early years there were a few family vacations together, including a memorable one to Santa's Village, as well as Sundays at my father-in-law's pool during the summer.I know how much he enjoyed watching his sons move through Belmont Hill, receiving particular joy as one of their coaches on the varsity soccer team. In recent years we often talked about how much we were enjoying our grandchildren. I know how important family was to him. Our professional relationship grew significantly when Cliff was appointed Director of the Upper School and several years later I was appointed Head Advisor of the Fourth Form. For virtually all of my 32 years at Belmont Hill he was my go-to-guy, regardless of whether my issues were professional or personal. It always amazed me that as the disciplinarian in the Upper School he could have such a wonderful relationship with the students. As others have mentioned, when he dispensed punishment it was always with his characteristic smile. When alumni returned to the school there was no faculty member more sought after than Cliff. He was my dear friend, and I miss him every day. By David Greer
