Extracurricular Awards Continued DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP AWARD The Diversity Leadership Award recognizes those boys who have worked to advance cultural inclusiveness and awareness at Belmont Hill by displaying a commitment to the community, a genuine care for others, and the courage to act for equity and justice. Woodbury, this prize is awarded to that boy judged to have made the best presentation of his subject. Extracurricular Awards Continued HAYDEN GAYLORD COON DRAMA PRIZE Established by the family of Hayden Gaylord Coon ’50 and awarded to a member of the Upper School for outstanding contributions to dramatics during the school year. ZOFNASS ’65 ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD Established in 2010 by Paul Zofnass ’65, who has dedicated his career to environmental issues, a passion that began at Belmont Hill. This prize goes to a student for his outstanding contributions to sustainability on or off campus or for exceptional work in the study of Environmental Science. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Jack Barry ’21 Timothy McCormack ’21 Justin Santana ’21 GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP AWARD This prize is awarded annually to those students who, through travel, service, and/or study, have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to global engagement and moved our community forward in its mission to educate capable and responsible global citizens. 2021 RECIPIENT: Henry Moses ’21 THE HILL PRIZE Given for outstanding work and interest in the Middle School newspaper. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Andrew Bittner ’24 Noah Farb ’24 Aidan Lee ’24 Brian Lee ’24 Kevin Weldon ’24 Daniel Xie ’24 HAMPERS LYCEUM AWARD Established in 1984 by the Hampers family and awarded to that member of the Lyceum who has contributed the most to the Upper School debating program through leadership, speaking ability, and performance at tournaments. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Alexander Atalla ’21 • Matthew Britt-Webb ’21


COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS BURT COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD The Burt Community Service Award was established in 1985 and named for Edward M. Burt, a faculty member for 20 years at Belmont Hill who was instrumental in helping to establish our Community Service program. Today, Community Service takes on many dimensions at Belmont Hill both on and off campus. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Nicholas Ascione ’24 Luke Carroll ’22 Daniel Drucker ’23 John Goguen ’23 Quinn Healey ’23 Daniel Moran ’23 Davin Roy ’24 Jalen Walker ’21

MAX WARBURG COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD The Max Warburg Community Service Award was established by the Coppedge Family in 1991 in memory of Max Warburg, a young boy who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1990, yet continued to face life with optimism, courage, and cheerful determination. He died shortly after having a bone marrow transplant in December 1990—just four days after receiving his acceptance to Belmont Hill School. Many in the Belmont Hill community participated in the bone marrow drives. This award recognizes the unselfish involvement of a member or members of the senior class in community service throughout their Belmont Hill years. 2021 RECIPIENT: Timothy McCormack ’21 Abraham Tolkoff ’21

COMMUNITY SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS 2020-2021 • “Think Pink” fundraiser and merchandise sale to benefit Dana Farber Oncology Institute. • Thanksgiving grocery gift-card drive (in place of our traditional Turkey Dinner Drive). • Participating advisories helped fulfill holiday wishlists for families through DOVE, an organization supporting victims of domestic violence. • Cradles to Crayons clothing drive. • Service Week, an opportunity for advisories to participate in one of five projects: write letters to military personnel through Operation Gratitude, donate food for snack bags for the Centre Street Food Bank in Newton, construct fleece blankets for the Family Nurturing Center, record children’s book readings for the Butler School in Belmont, and assemble Birthday In a Box items for Birthday Wishes. • Donations for Pine Street Inn “Welcome Home Baskets.” • Tutoring/mentoring connection for students at the Mission Grammar School. • Giving Week, combined donation drive for More Than Words (books and clothes), Fourth Presbyterian Church food pantry, and the Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club. • Video of musical performances for residents at Hebrew Senior Life and other assisted-living centers. • Paper bag donations (ongoing) and website re-design for Belmont Food Pantry.


ATHLETIC AWARDS RED and BLUE KEY SOCIETY This award is made to those members of the student body who contribute significantly to Belmont Hill athletics by performing services of a non-athletic nature but which, nevertheless, are essential to the maintenance of a sound athletic program. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Andrew Dummer ’22 Shane Kelly ’22 Grant Litchfield ’21 Justin Santana ’21 NEWELL HOWES MORTON AWARD Given by the faculty as a tribute to Newell Howes Morton, for 21 years a teacher and coach of younger boys at Belmont Hill, to that student who best exemplifies the School’s tradition of good sportsmanship and fair play in Middle School athletic competition. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Richard Gaskin ’24 Cord Vallis ’24

BABE RUTH SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Presented to a member or members of the Sixth Form, chosen by members of the faculty and the students in Forms V and VI for having made the greatest contribution to the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play during the school year. 2021 RECIPIENT: Timothy McCormack ’21

THE DARREN D. GALLUP THREE-SPORT ATHLETE AWARD Approved in 2003 by the Athletic Policy Committee, this award is given in memory of Darren Gallup of the Class of 2003. Darren was a three-sport athlete in Football, Hockey, and Lacrosse and a generous supporter of his teammates and friends. His broad participation as a student-athlete and positive impact have served as a model to others. This award is presented to members of the Sixth Form who have earned a varsity letter in each season of their last year in school. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Sreetej Digumarthi ’21 Jayson Firmin ’21 Grant Litchfield ’21 Timothy McCormack ’21 Casey Rockett ’21 Abraham Tolkoff ’21 THE CHARLES F. KENNEY ’06 PRIZE Established in 2013 by classmates, family, faculty, and friends to honor the memory of Charles F. Kenney, Class of 2006. During his years at Belmont Hill, Charlie was a three-sport athlete, a Woodbury Prize recipient in public speaking, dedicated to serving the school he loved, and an ideal friend and teammate. This award is presented annually to the Sixth Former who has lifted his teammates and coaches by his spirit, encouragement, leadership, and inspiration. 2021 RECIPIENT: Grant Litchfield ’21

THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL LEAGUE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE Presented at each Independent School League member school to that student-athlete who best exemplifies the Independent School League ideals of integrity, sportsmanship, fair play, and good citizenship while participating as a multi-sport athlete during his ISL career. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Sreetej Digumarthi ’21 Casey Rockett ’21

SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS Since 1923, the Scholastic Art Awards have been administered and in 1994 the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for the next generation of artists and writers, was formed. Thomas upon his retirement from Belmont Hill School, this prize is awarded to that student whose work in photography has shown outstanding growth in photojournalism or artistic expression. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Brian Lee ’24 Daniel Slatkavitz ’24 TOGNERI ART PRIZE Established by the late Mrs. Togneri and supported by William H. L. Mitchell III ’58, this prize is given in memory of the late Angelo M. Togneri, for 52 years a teacher of art and woodcarving at Belmont Hill. It is awarded to that boy, who in the last year has made the most significant achievement in creative arts. 2021 RECIPIENT: Grant Litchfield ’21

DOWNES HISTORY PRIZE Established by Christopher N. Beal ’59, in memory of Prentice G. Downes, inspired teacher and member of the faculty for 26 years, and awarded to a member of the Sixth Form for outstanding work in history. 2021 RECIPIENT: Sreetej Digumarthi ’21

FORM IV HISTORY PRIZE Awarded to a member of the Fourth Form who has distinguished himself by exhibiting dedication, passion, and scholarship, in his study of European History. 2021 RECIPIENT: Cooper Nelson ’23

MONACO AMERICAN HISTORY PRIZE

Given by the Monaco family in memory of Donato Monaco, to that student in the Fifth Form whose major research paper has demonstrated depth of interest, clarity, and high quality of research.

Robinson, a devoted physician who encouraged people to seek vocations in the sciences – awarded for outstanding work in Physics. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Abraham Tolkoff ’21 Charles Wells ’21 FREDERICK RICHARDSON CHEMISTRY PRIZE Established in honor of Frederick C. Richardson, who retired in 1989 after 30 years of service to Belmont Hill School as teacher of chemistry and an exemplary school man – for outstanding work in chemistry. 2021 RECIPIENT: Daniel Bittner ’22

RENSSELAER MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE AWARD Awarded by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, by vote of the Math and Science departments, to the student showing the greatest interest and achievement in mathematics and the physical sciences in the Junior class. 2021 RECIPIENT: Daniel Bittner ’22

G. CLIFFORD GOODBAND BIOLOGY PRIZE Established in memory of G. Clifford Goodband Jr., for 39 years a dedicated teacher of biology and for 27 years Director of the Upper School — awarded for outstanding work in Biology. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Jeremy Eaton ’23 Max Wagner ’23


MIDDLE SCHOOL MERIT AWARDS Established in 1981 by Mr. and Mrs. John Harding. Awarded to boys of the First, Second, and Third Forms who have shown sensitivity to others, sound moral character, concern for the quality of the school community, and who through their determination and perseverance have merited recognition either by achieving significant personal growth or by making a significant but unheralded contribution in the area of Middle School life.

Given in his memory by the family of Richard L. Gregg, for 37 years a dedicated teacher and coach of the youngest boys in the School, to a First Former who has demonstrated a commitment to the ideals of Belmont Hill and unusual good will and support for his classmates.

Established by Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Funk in memory of his grandmother, and awarded to a student in the Middle School for personal integrity, good citizenship, and concern for the welfare of others, qualities which Mr. Funk, Director of the Middle School from 1952 to 1982, consistently inspired in his students.

HARVARD CLUB OF BOSTON BOOK PRIZE Awarded by vote of the faculty to that outstanding student in the Fifth Form who “displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.” 2021 RECIPIENT: Daniel Bittner ’22

WILLIAMS COLLEGE BOOK PRIZE Given by the Williams College Alumni Association to that boy who is selected by the faculty from the Fifth Form for “outstanding citizenship as well as an above-average scholastic standing.” 2021 RECIPIENTS: Jacob Czarnecki ’22 Arec Keomurjian ’22

YALE BOOK AWARD This prize is given to member of the Fifth Form who has demonstrated a commitment to learning, personal generosity and kindness, and self-sacrifice for the good of others. 2021 RECIPIENT: Martin Wilson ’21

GENERAL MARK A. MILLEY ’76 PRIZE This prize is awarded to a student in the Fourth Form who, in the judgement of the faculty, best exemplify “character and service,” demonstrating leadership through hard work, integrity, enthusiastic engagement, and a selfless commitment to the community. 2021 RECIPIENTS: Daniel Drucker ’23 Jeremy Eaton ’23 Reuben Siegel ’23

GEORGE v o n L. MEYER III MEMORIAL PRIZE

Established in 1971 by Milton L. Dodge. Awarded annually to a member of the graduating class who has merited recognition for his determination and perseverance in meeting the academic challenge of this school, whose efforts have never flagged, and who by his common sense has made a valuable contribution to Belmont Hill School.

Established in 1957 by Mrs. Eugene H. Pool in memory of George vonL.Meyer who was killed in World War II. Awarded annually to that member of the graduating class who has evidenced outstanding interest in learning and who, by his contribution to the life of the School, has shown qualities of unselfish conduct, leadership, and integrity.

MARGARET V. LAWLESS MEMORIAL PRIZE Established in 1975 in memory of Margaret V. Lawless by William F. Lawless, her brother. Awarded annually to that boy who is distinguished for showing sensitivity to others and concern for the quality of the school community.
