The Chairman's report from the Parish Council for Feb/March is as follows: The Housing needs survey and it's now attendant work moves on. Suffolk Acre who are guiding and assisting us in this matter have now requested a 'facilities questionnaire' to be completed dealing with the availability in the village and surrounding areas of playing fields, shops, pubs and bus services etc., as part of the scheme. This has been completed and submitted and will, we hope, enable us to progress this scheme further. We have no new information regarding the schools re-‐organisation and doubtless many of you will have heard rumours, updates and, probably, some wishful thinking as well. There is likely to be a Suffolk County Council decision soon as their cabinet will be meeting in Mildenhall shortly and this item is on their agenda. Unfortunately this cabinet does not include our County Councillor but I am certain that all ten members of that cabinet will know her and our views on the matter -‐ whether they take any notice or not is entirely another matter. We continue to press for some improvement to the road surface on the eastbound slip road without any result thus far. We are pleased to note the re-‐appearance of chevrons on the westbound slip. Whilst with roads, we will again face the prospect of night closures on a long stretch of the A14 from Haughley to Woolpit so that the work begun last autumn can be completed. This will not inconvenience any of us unless trying to travel on the A14 between 8.00pm and 6.00 am from 6th to 10th of April. Our next meeting is on Monday 6th February. Beyton Village Association – Christmas Events 2011
Christmas Safari Supper Great fun had by all - delicious canapes at the Bear, then a walk across the village for a starter, back on the road in search of a main, then another hop skip and a jump to find dessert. Thanks to the Bear - our starting and finishing point, and to all those that cooked and hosted. Well done all the walkers - well worth the effort!
Carol singing From members of the committee "A great turnout from the village on what was quite a damp and dark evening; especially good to have more men who added range and volume! We were rewarded with some warming mulled wine and refreshments at Holly House. A total of £105 was raised for the East Anglian Air Ambulance thank you to those who braved the weather and to those who gave so generously." "....It was really fun and there were people there I have not met before so we possibly attracted some new singers...we did a different route to last year, walking along Bury road. Excellent refreshments at Max and Claires....." "... I was sadly ill on the evening of carol-singing, but was delighted to receive Carollers in the garden, and amazed at the number of people who turned out on a damp and drizzly night - many thanks to them all - a great result!"
New Years Village Walk Fine weather greeted us as we set off over the fields to Ravenwood Hall. We took a route past Chevins Wood, After 1.5 hours of trekking, we enjoyed its welcome comforts - a friendly waiterserved breakfast. Delicious food in a lovely environment! Our thanks to Craig and Julie for making it possible. Do join us for the next one in April - all welcome, including dogs....

Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people live full and independent lives.” Great British Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 18th May 2012 Want to do something different? Want to raise money where you live or work? Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 18th May 2012 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s information and support services. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre. SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 7 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £35.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA. Last year we had over 100 suppers taking part in England and Wales and we raised £6,000. In the three years we have been running the event we have raised £20,000 to support spinal cord injured people. The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to lead independent lives. Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone. Community Fundraising Officer, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group. Be a part of something special and make a real difference to help spinal cord injured people gain access to the information and support they need to enable them to live full and independent lives.” For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 071 4350 or email fishandchips@spinal.co.uk or visit www.spinal.co.uk/ fishandchips

Beyton Environmental Group A brief up-date on the activities of Beyton's very own Eco-warriors! We currently have three sites that we manage in collaboration with other people: Oak Tree Pond which is just beyond the last house in Quaker Lane, is now looking good and mature. There is however, no water in the ponds at present. These are water-table ponds, and only fill up as the water-table level rises. So they are a useful indicator of how high or low it is. It has been very low now for over a year, reflecting the low rain-fall of recent months. The two small meadows are much better, now that they are mown or scythed appropriately. There is some sign of wild flowers but the rabbits exercise their right to eat them! The bird boxes were used, although it is difficult to ascertain who is using the Owl boxes;is it a Jackdaw, a squirrel or maybe an Owl? The Churchyard, which we manage with permission of the PCC, is also well-established. The flowering species here are the main reason for its County Wildlife Site status, and we try to manage the grass to encourage good flowering and seeding each year. This is not an exact science;some years are better than others. Last year we had some lovely Lady's Smock and Cowslips, but the elusive Bee Orchid failed to appear. Beyton Old Orchard Project ( BOOP ) is our most active site. We now have discovered about 20 old trees, and most of them are undergoing the slow process of restorative pruning. This means removing some ivy and brambles, taking out dead wood and then cutting back some mature wood to encourage new healthy growth;but it must be done slowly and carefully so they don't die of shock! We have also planted 8 new trees (mostly traditional Suffolk species), and are currently putting in a new boundary hedge for winter berries and nesting sites. The school have put up 4 nest boxes, and the pond has newts and breeding Damsel flies and Dragonflies. The Orchard is used by the school for all sorts of subjects; Science, Environmental studies, Art etc. It is a brilliant project to be involved with. The Head-master is fully supportive and very appreciative of our efforts. If you would like to come and see what we do, just ring me on 01359 270785, or come to our next work-party. Cathy Cass
