PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN’S NOTES – Oct/Nov 011 The Parish Council has had to take some prompt measures to remedy safety issues raised by our annual inspec8on of the play equipment. We were aware of the need to replace the footboards on the roundabout as they were crumbling away over the years, not helped by local teenagers removing these boards to use for other purposes. This ma@er did get out of hand and, following abuse of remonstra8ng adults, police were called and the offenders dealt with. Subsequently all the boards have been replaced, the rest of the structure painted and we just await the installa8on of the missing bars which are apparently not a safety issue . In the mean8me we are grateful to Chelsteen Homes, who are building the Manor Farm site, for the use of the safety fencing while this job is completed. All this has been going on whilst we try to assemble the necessary funding for our planned revamp of this whole play area -‐ not easy in the current circumstances. However, with the help of our District councillors, we have now untangled some of the red tape surrounding the 'planning gain' money paid by Chelsteen for their development at Manor Farm and, with County Councillor help also, are close to our total requirements. It is extremely valuable to our community to call on the various funds that are available but very frustra8ng to have to wait to get it all in place before any work can begin or even order the equipment to install. We con8nue to be frustrated by bureacracy over the state of our roads. The east bound slip road could not be repaired at the 8me the adjacent part of the A14 was totally resurfaced for what appeared to us to be excuses, not good reasons. Equally the chevrons guarding the west bound slip, recently replaced and brought up to the full quota, did not last a full month and have, as I write almost two months later, not yet been replaced. APer several weeks of wai8ng for the Speed Watch camera to be repaired it is now back with us and in use again. Several visitors/passers by as well as residents who have driven without sufficient regard for the limits will already know this. We con8nue to monitor the situa8on with regard to the Middle School. With the Suffolk educa8on/school situa8on in disarray to say the least we now find that our middle school is planning to become an academy and Thurston College is trying to follow the previous line of SCC and join with 17 primary schools to accomodate the whole age range from 4+ to 18 without a middle school op8on. Their plan however, does include the use of Beyton as part of the accomoda8on which would then ensure its' con8nued use as a school rather than become a 'development opportunity' which has been our major concern ever since the two 8er plan was adopted by SCC. You may be aware that Suffolk County Council launched its budget consultation on 12 August which runs until 12 December. The council is already looking at how it can save money through staffing re-‐structures and reducing back office costs. We will continue to look for further savings in these areas, but this may not be enough given the scale of savings needed. To help us meet the challenge, we want to hear your views on the services which matter most to you. We would also like to hear about your ideas and suggestions on how the council could save money. Please visit our website at: http://www.suffolk.gov.uk/ WeAreListening and fill in our survey. Copies are also available through libraries or you can answer the survey questions over the phone on 0845 6031842 (Monday -‐ Friday 8.30am -‐ 5pm)

Beware! Thieves about Lead has been stolen from the roof! On a recent house-keeping check around Beyton Church we found that lead has been stolen from the roof of the boiler house. It's not much - about 2 square feet but it has caused damage and will have to be replaced - with Aluminium! This just shows that we must all be vigilant - even lead from house windows has been stolen. The price the thieves got for the lead will be £2 or £3 - the cost of replacing - ten times as much! There are lots of gardening, maintenance, painting and cleaning jobs to be done around and in Beyton church. Come and join a working party! SATURDAY 24th September – 9.30am – 12 noon SATURDAY 1st October – 9.30am – 12 noon Coffee and biscuits in abundance! Well done the Environmental group for the work done cutting grass and hedges in the churchyard. Thanks for the work that you do. Graham Rendle
THE SUFFOLK FOUNDATION OPENS COMIC RELIEF GRANTS PROGRAMME TO GROUPS IN SUFFOLK The Suffolk Foundation has been awarded local funding from Comic Relief to provide essential grants to groups across the county over the next two years. The Local Communities grants programme is open to community groups, resident associations, community centres, credit unions, social enterprises and community interest companies. Grants of £1,000 to £10,000 are available, and projects should be run by people directly affected by the issues they are dealing with. Priority will be given to small, locally-based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community. Stephen Singleton from The Suffolk Foundation said: “We want these grants to empower local people, enabling them to create lasting change in their communities. The Local Communities grants programme will be offering grants of £1,000 to £10,000, and we will be looking for applications that show how a small amount of money will make a big difference. We welcome applications for a range of initiatives, from community sport activities, to community employment projects, to food co-ops.”
The Suffolk Foundation has a simple and straightforward application process and welcomes applications from established organisations, as well as new groups and projects. Full details of the Local Communities grants programme can be found on the website www.suffolkfoundation.org.uk
