ellevue rolled out the red carpet this month and pulled all the stops for some very impressive highprofile names.
The list included a top comedian, fashion icon, bestselling author and Olympic medalist (Apolo Ohno paid a quick visit to the students at Chinook Middle School – a surprise assembly the students are sure not to forget anytime soon).

Add those big names to the list of already accredited local talent and you could safely say Bellevue has arrived.

The Scene had the opportunity to chat with Roberta Armani (page 8), the niece of Giorgio Armani and the face of the fashion empire. Roberta Armani flew into Bellevue just off the cuff of an evening on the red carpet at the Oscars and a private screening of her friend Leo’s movie, Shutter Island, in New York City. During a private runway show event at Neiman Marcus in Bellevue, she shared some of her uncle’s fashion tips, her glamorous lifestyle and the A-listers she considers close friends.

In anticipation for the upcoming comedy show at the Parlor Live, I had a good laugh talking with comedian Rob Schneider (page 16-17). The former Saturday Night Live castmate and actor called in from Louisiana and talked (between bites of Gumbo) about his rise to fame, dating back to a trip to the Seattle area. If you want a chance to see the funny man live when he comes to Bellevue on May 6-8, become a follower of The Scene on Twitter @bellevuescene.

If you are in the mood to hit the books anytime soon, be sure to pick up a copy of New York Bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert’s newest book, Committed. The follow-up book to Eat, Pray, Love is yet another masterpiece by Gilbert who swung by Bellevue as a featured guest and speaker at the Inspire YWCA Luncheon Eastside (page 14). Make sure to catch Eat, Pray, Love when it hits the big screen this August starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem.

Roberta Armani (center) jetted in from Milan for the recent Armani fashion show at Bellevue’s Neiman Marcus.
Talking with
ROBERTA ARMANI, niece of legendary designer Giorgio Armani, is like talking with a good friend. A few sentences in and it becomes increasingly difficult to remember this is the same woman who considers Tom and Katie (Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes) good friends and has worked her way up to become a director of the Giorgio Armani company. Growing up in the world of high fashion, Roberta emerged herself in the study of language. She soon began
to accompany her uncle to social events where she acted as his translator. She quickly formed relationships with the celebrity cliental and took on the role as public relations for the entertainment industry. She has been hitting the red carpet ever since. “I enjoy traveling and attending events. I have become the traveler of the company. It’s important to meet people all over the world and to breathe different cultures,” she explained. “That way, when I return to Milan where my uncle designs, I can transfer him my emotions and the things I learn while away.” Roberta flew to the Seattle area in early March to present a private showing of the Armani 2010 Spring/Summer Collection at Neiman Marcus. The exclusive event catered to a small group of 50 guests and featured an intimate runway show and luncheon on the first floor of Neiman Marcus at The Bravern in Bellevue. This marked her first trip to the Seattle and Eastside area. “I arrived and immediately took the time to walk around to see a little of the city. I love it here,” she proclaimed. “There is a beautiful energy about this place. It’s very free. People look very smart and bright here. This is my first time to Bellevue, and seeing the mountains and the area and how beautiful the houses are, it’s so clean. The air is so fresh.”
Prior to her arrival in Bellevue, Roberta made an appearance at the Oscars, attended her good friend Leonardo DiCaprio’s New York premiere screening of Shutter Island and worked with Lady Gaga at the Grammy Awards. “I consider many celebrities my friends,” she said. “Do I get star-struck still? Sure. Tom will always be Tom Cruise to me. He is a true movie star.” When asked who she would like to dress if given the chance, she was quick to answer. “I would love to work with Edward Norton. I think he is one of the brightest actors out there,” she gushed. “Also, Gwyneth Paltrow. I think she is so beautiful and sophisticated.” Although Roberta has worked alongside her uncle for the past 20 years, she still remains inspired by his hard work and dedication to his craft. “It was an actual process for me to learn the company and now represent the Armani name,” she explained. “When I was younger, I didn’t understand my uncle working all the time, day and night. Now I understand. He has taught me a lot and I admire him in so many ways. He is still on top of everything and has so much energy for his designs.” – Lindsay Larin

amie Brown is a man of substance. The Walla Walla native moved to the Seattle area after high school and pursued a career in music, opening his own music shop. He began to build relationships with clients who were in the restaurant business and began to share their knowledge of wine. He slowly discovered a new craft. As time went by, his creative spirit was drawn to a new passion – the art of winemaking. Jump ahead several years, add in a move back home, and a thorough introduction to the world of wine, and meet the winemaker behind Wines of Substance, Brown’s secondlabel project at Waters Winery in Walla Walla. Wines of Substance was created to educate the younger generation of wine novices and to introduce them to Washington wines. Marked by the distinctive black and white label mirroring the periodic table and a low price point, Substance has quickly become known as the cool kid on the block. Brown recently paid a visit to Purple Cafe in Bellevue for a tweet up event hosted by the locally famed Seattle Wine Girl. “These type of events and exposure is why we created Substance in the first place,” he said, while sipping a glass of wine at Purple. “There’s an undeniable gravitational pull. Substance is really intended for this hip, young crowd who are open to trying new things.” His return to his hometown of Walla Walla led Brown to Glen Fiona, Dunham Cellars, and Pepper Bridge before becoming the first winemaker for James Leigh Cellars in 2001. Four years later, Brown was introduced to Jason Huntley by their mutual friend Chris Figgins of Leonetti Cellar. The new friends shared a fondness for old world wines and formed Waters Winery. In early 2007, Brown teamed up with Huntley and Greg Harrington of Gramercy Cellars to launch Wines of Substance. “We all felt there was a void in handmade valued brands,” Brown explained. “With Greg’s experience in the educational side of the industry, we thought we could produce a fun, well-made wine that catered to a younger crowd. There has been an upswing and interest in good wine over the last five years and we have seen a lot more interest from younger people.” The Substance team plans to grow the label horizontally rather than vertically; they will add different kinds of varietals instead of simply increasing the production. “We pride ourselves in making natural wine, meaning we don’t get in the way of the wine. Wineries can adjust wine during the process of winemaking. We try to do all that in the vineyard and let the wine be what it is,” Brown said. “There’s a lot of focus right now
on organic. Wine shouldn’t be any different. Let’s get out the way and let the wine be what it is meant to be in its truest form.” Current Substance releases include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Syrah and Counoise. White wines include Viognier, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling. “We feel like we make wines as natural as possible,” Brown noted. “As we were trying to come up with names for the new brand, we knew we wanted something that was associated with of the earth. We played around with a couple of names and ideas. Once we settled on the name Substance it became a natural progression of what is a substance. Our designers at Boxwood hit on the periodic tables design. It was one of those things where we couldn’t wait to get started on it because we knew it would be a huge homerun.” Wines of Substance produces close to 10,000 cases a year and continues to experience high demand for the wine. comfort cuisine Executive Chef Mike Davis of Bellevueʼs Purple Cafe serves up old favorites with a dash of Eastside flare.
P
asta shells, heavy cream, and a blend of fontina, gruia, and chedder cheeses (the ingredients of heaven) or in Purple Cafe’s case, the ingredients of the Lobster Mac and Cheese. The staple dish is a favorite amongst diners at Purple Cafe in Bellevue and is one of many dishes on the menu considered an ideal comfort food. Executive Chef Mike Davis, who joined Purple and the Heavy Restaurant group in 2009, knows all about comfort food. The former owner of 26brix in Walla Walla moved to the Bellevue area and took over as executive chef for Purple Cafe, Barrio and a new concept restaurant opening soon on the corner of 4th and 106th in downtown Bellevue. Growing up in New Orleans, Davis spent his formative years in the Big Easy, where he learned to love food. He moved around the country, went to school, traveled and followed every chef imaginable. At the age of 28, he took his first shot at becoming an executive chef at Salish Lodge and Spa. He then went on to open his own restaurant and has now come full circle back, managing the trio of restaurants in Bellevue. The Scene recently sat down with Davis to dish about his role at Purple, what’s on the menu, and some his favorite comfort foods. SCENE: How did growing in New Orleans shape your approach to food? DAVIS: In New Orleans I learned technique and style. I learned to really love food. It spurred something in me and made me want to learn as much as I could. I studied the best chefs in the industry and have eaten at as many different restaurants as possible. I haven’t lost that same love of food yet. SCENE: What is your style of cooking? DAVIS: My style of cooking is predominately French, but I am a son of all cuisines. French technique is the foundation of so many styles of cooking. Purple being mediterranean just fit in perfectly with how I approach cooking.

LOBSTER MAC N’ CHEESE (...AT HOME) Heat a heavy cream and a three cheese blend and bring to a boil. Reduce it down until thick. Add sauteed shallots and lobster. Toss in pasta shells and let cook until soft. Pour mixture into a baking dish. Sprinkle the top with cheese. Toss in the oven and bake until nice and brown on top. Let cool slightly then serve and enjoy.
Photos by Chad Coleman
SCENE: What is the focus of the menu at Purple? DAVIS:The focus here at Purple is wine-friendly food and a major emphasis on approachability. Most people don’t look at French food as approachable, but we try to concentrate on comfort foods. SCENE: What would you consider comfort food? DAVIS: Comfort food is a food that people can really relate to. It’s a food you can enjoy anytime, whether you’re off of work, at home or out to dinner. It’s not always food that makes you feel really full and overstuffed, but rather a food that you like to have that makes you feel really good. SCENE: What is a popular comfort food on Purple’s menu? DAVIS: The most popular is the Lobster Mac and Cheese, hands down. It sells more than anything. Also the Margarita Pizza which we make it really well. We use fresh-torn mozzarella and torn basil, releasing the flavors onto the pizza and our sauce. The Basil Pesto Pasta is another big one here that people seem to love. And let’s not forget our Cranberry Chicken Salad which has grilled chicken, celery, bacon, and almonds. It’s basically a lettuce-less salad. It’s such a simple mixture of flavors and would be easy to mimic at home. I also like the Lamb Burger. It’s a good spin on your typical burger at home and is one of our top selling sandwiches. SCENE: Can you share some of your favorite comfort foods? DAVIS: When I think of comfort food I go back to my roots. My favorite comfort food is Southern. Gumbos or stews. Really one pot wonders. Things you can throw in the pot and let cook all day. Comfort food is anything that reminds you of growing up and being home.

COMMITTED to the
journey ew York Bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert has traveled the world and returned home again. The author of the well-received memoir, Eat, Pray, Love, has been launched into the spotlight since its release in 2006 and has transformed into a living inspiration for women everywhere.
N

H
er follow-up book, Committed, A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage, was released in January and picks up 18 months after Eat, Pray, Love leaves off, capturing the story of her romance and marriage to Jose Nunes (known as Felipe in the book). Not only has she gained a new found fame and a shiny ring on her left hand, but also Gilbert’s tale of torment to triumph will hit the big screen with the release of Eat, Pray, Love as a major motion picture this August, starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. Gilbert and her husband, whose initial romance blossomed on the pages of Eat, Pray, Love, now live in a small, quiet town in New Jersey. She recently traveled to Bellevue as the featured guest speaker at the Inspire YWCA Luncheon Eastside where she dazzled the audience with her story telling, kind heart and spunky wit. “I don’t really have a traditional novelist personality,” Gilbert said. “I’m not a shy person as you can tell. I
enjoy meeting my readers and sharing stories.” Gilbert may lack the shy gene, but she still faces her own challenges. According to Gilbert, writing her second memoir Committed, was her most challenging feat yet. “As I approached this second memoir, I felt I was writing into an ocean of expectations. It was a self generated pressure of wanting to please everyone and have this book match the success of Eat, Pray, Love,” she explained. “There was such an intimate and powerful reaction to that book by readers. How was I supposed to match that?” The book Committed recounts how she came to marry the man she first met and fell in love with in Indonesia in Eat, Pray, Love. This second book explores her reluctancy to jump back on the marriage boat and touches on the history and sociology of marriage. “Committed is much less raw and open,” she explained, comparing it to Eat, Pray, Love. “It’s not
as brutally honest and personal as Eat Pray Love was because I’m not in such a hard emotional space. My life is more stable today. I’m happy.” Gilbert said she approached this book from a learning standpoint. She dove into the study of marriage and divorce and learned a lot along the way. “All my research on marriage and divorce was perspective changing and very useful,” she said. “I have a much better understanding of what a marriage should be.” Luckily for Gilbert, her love interest and now husband was not bashful about gracing the pages of her book. He took it all in stride, according to her, and continues to support her throughout her journey. “With Committed, we both knew a lot of people would be reading it,” she said. “He likes Committed and thinks it’s a very important book and he wants it out there. He is very proud of me” – Lindsay Larin

Funny Man From the movie screen to stand up | Rob returns to the stage after making us laugh so hard we wet our pants. by Lindsay Larin
R
ob Schneider always knew he wanted to be a comedian. From an early age, he was groomed to be funny. Schneider grew up watching comedians such as Woody Allen and Steve Martin and was raised in a family of characters including his father, who loved to tell jokes. By the time Cheech and Chong came along, he was hooked on comedy.
Schneider started his stand-up comedy career shortly after high school. He played Bay Area nightclubs and in 1987 opened a show hosted by comedian Dennis Miller. Schneider won a slot
on HBO’s 13th Annual Young Comedians special. From there, his career as a comedy powerhouse took off. The stand-up comic, actor and director has a professional resume that is a mile long including a former cast member of Saturday Night Live in the late ‘90s and acting roles in 40 movies including Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, The Hot Chick, and Grown Ups. On May 6-8, Schneider will bring his brand of humor to the Bellevue area for a three-night performance at The Parlor Live. The Scene recently chatted with Schneider about all things funny. SCENE: Where did you get your sense of humor? ROB SCHNEIDER: Growing up, my dad was a big laughing guy and loved to tell jokes. I was the youngest kid in a loud family so you had to be funny to get attention. Let’s just say, I got a lot of attention. SCENE: When did you know you were going to pursue comedy as a career? RS: I think if you’re not into comedy by age 9,
you don’t have a chance. No, but seriously, I was visiting Seattle in my early twenties and had a really awesome week of standup. I was having coffee in a small coffee shop near Pike Place and I had an ‘ah-ha’ moment. I realized I could actually make a living by being funny. I could be famous. It was a crazy realization. SCENE: Being famous and wanting to be famous are two different things. Where did you go from there? RS: At the time, I felt like there was an energy behind what I was doing and I can’t explain it. Everything started to click after that. Saturday Night Live (SNL) was a huge break. SCENE: Best part of being on SNL? RS: I grew up watching the original cast so it was amazing to be part of the show a decade later.

I worked with people like Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade and Chris Farley. SCENE: Favorite character you played on SNL? RS: The copy machine guy (Richard Laymer), but the Sensitive Naked Guy and Weed Guy come in a close second. SCENE: Do you prefer acting or stand up? RS: Whatever I do I want to be great at it and if I pursue it I want to be the best. I’ve made about 40 movies. Some of them are good and some aren’t. I think people sometimes don’t understand comedies. They think we just

get together and ad-lib the entire thing. No movie company is going to give us $50 million to ad-lib. We are going off a script just like any other actor. With stand up, I am free to say what I want. SCENE: Why go back to stand up now? RS: I never got a chance to work on an hour of comedy like George Carlin, one of my idols. So after George died, Adam (Sandler) and Chris (Rock) nudged me back to stand up and I thought, why not. SCENE: You have worked with amazing actors such as

Adam Sandler. What Sandler movie do you like best? RS: The Waterboy is tough to beat because it was funny from top to bottom. Adam is one of the hardest workers in showbiz. I’m also excited about the new movie Grown Ups. It’s a really good movie and I think it’s Adam’s best. We made it last summer and we don’t know if it will work and if people will laugh, but I think it will make an impact. SCENE: Favorite movie you have starred in? RS: Big Stan. The movie was released all over the world, but not in America. I’m proud of that movie and I liked directing. I also really liked Deuce Bigalow and 51 Dates that Adam made. SCENE: Are you looking forward to visiting Bellevue? RS: I am. I enjoy performing in smaller clubs where I can feed off the audience and I like the area because everyone’s so smart and well read. I have been working for months on the act I will bring to Bellevue and I think it will deliver.

Ask Rose Words of wisdom, etiquette & advice for the Eastside scenester
Dear Rose,
Dear Rose, I recently was set up on a blind date, and now he wants me to go out on another date, and I do not want to. I am ignoring his emails and text messages, and he will not go away. Help! – Jessica in Bellevue Dear Jessica, Blind dates are a great way to meet someone who has the same interests as
you. Your friends were wonderful and loyal to do this for you. Unfortunately, you need to stop ignoring his communication to you in hopes that he will go away. You need to politely return his call. Tell him you are not interested in pursuing this relationship. Do not send any mixed messages and keep in mind he has heard it before. Do not give him hope that you will change your mind. Be respectful. Do not be mean and hurtful. Keep your feelings to yourself, move on, and let him do the same thing. ..................................................................................
Dear Rose, My finance and I have been invited to a patio- pool party with a few of my coworkers and I was hoping that you could give me some advice on how we should appropriately dress for this event? – Lisa Dear Lisa, It is important to always dress according to your audience and the
occasion. Wear clothing that compliments your body shape, and does not embarrass you or others. When you are invited to an event, it is acceptable to ask the host what the attire will be. Wear a camisole if your blouse or dress is sheer enough to reveal the details of your bra. Warmer weather often means less clothing. Always wear undergarments. If wearing sandals, both of you should get a pedicure. Ladies should have freshly shaved legs if they are to be revealed. Guys, no short shorts! If you plan to go in the pool, make sure that your swimsuit is appropriate, no thongs. If you do not want to strip down to a bathing suit, simply don’t. Remember to always utilize these encounters to make a favorable lasting impression.
I recently hosted a dinner party in my home, and to my surprise, a couple of my guests brought their young children, who were not part of my dinner plans. How does a hostess deal with situations like this without losing her friends? Trisha in Bellevue

Dear Rose, I just started a new job, and wanted your ideas on how to make friends at work? – Sherri in Bellevue Dear Sherri, The best way to make friends at work is to be a
happy and sunny person, so that you lift the spirits of others. No one likes to be around a grump. Coworkers want to be around you because you’re the one with a positive disposition. Lend a helping hand, even when it is not your responsibility. Surprise!! I hope you graciously seated the children If someone is staying late to work on at the same or another table, fed them, made them feel welcome, an emergency project, stay late once in a while to help out. Swank Bellevue fashion show raises funds for the Performing Arts Center Eastside
O
nce upon a time there lived a group of well-intentioned women with big hearts who envisioned a new performing arts center on the Eastside. These women, formally known as the Act Two Guild, worked tirelessly to spread the word about their mission to bring culture, music and the arts to Bellevue. Together, the more than 30 women planned and implemented an inaugural event called the Silhouettes of Style Luncheon and Fashion Show. The first annual event took place in spring 2009 and raised more than $100,000 for the future Performing Arts Center Eastside (PACE). The Act Two Guild took note and have decided to carry on the tradition of the runway fashion show and luncheon. On Friday, April 16, Silhouettes of Style 2010Talk of the Town, will hit the runway at the Westin Bellevue for a not to be missed event. According to Kim Hardwick of the Act Two Guild, this year’s runway show and luncheon will take it up a notch. The runway show, presented by The Bellevue Collection, will feature fashions for the everyday woman and will embrace the concept of creating a “look book”, a go-to guide for everyday fashion. “This event really stands out because it’s not only a fabulous fashion show, but also acts as a platform for us to share about PACE and what the future holds for the Eastside,” Hardwick
2010 Silhouettes of Style Friday, April 17 The Westin Bellevue explained. “We want to highlight PACE and get people excited.” Performing Arts Center Eastside will feature a 2,000-seat Concert Hall and 250-seat Cabaret,
presenting for the first time nationally and internationally acclaimed music, theatre, and dance to Eastside audiences. The mission of PACE is to enrich Eastside culture with live entertainment, arts, and education. PACE will be located in downtown Bellevue at the corner of NE 10th Street and 106th Avenue NE and is scheduled to open in 2013. Fashion stylist and producer Terri C. Morgan will once again work behind the scenes with The Bellevue Collection to put on a show stopping runway show. “Terri is amazing. We are all excited to see what she comes up with this year,” Hardwick said. “In this economy, the focus is really on staple pieces. Buying that one standout piece of jewelry or handbag that makes you feel good without breaking the bank.” An original painting by local artist and Act Two Guild member Theresa Goesling captures the vibrancy of the event and will act as the inspiration for the luncheon decor. The painting will be up for auction during the luncheon, with proceeds benefiting PACE. “Pace is like a sport center for Bellevue,” said a bubbly Hardwick. “It will stimulate business for the local restaurants, hotels and shopping. It’s going to be a great addition to our city.” For more of the scoop on the Act Two Guild and PACE, visit www.acttwoguild.org.
