Beating the winter blues

Feeling the winter time blues? Well, you aren’t alone. Depression is common in the winter months for both seniors. A percentage of the population suffers from an affliction called “Seasonal Affective Disorder,” or SAD. In people with SAD, the lack of natural sunlight in the winter time upsets the sleep-wake cycle and other circadian rhythms, as well as the release of serotonin, one of the brain’s “feel-good” chemicals. Fortunately, SAD is less common in seniors over 55, but the senior population may still suffer from depression at this time of year. Here are some tips for beating the winter blues. The Great Outdoors Getting outdoors and soaking in whatever natural sunlight you can will help. For seniors, outdoor means a change of scenery and environment that can stave off winter doldrums of feeling cooped up indoors. Just stay inside if the wind chill makes it feel below freezing. If you have to venture outside, bundle up. Don’t leave any part of your body exposed, since seniors are especially susceptible to frostbite. Exercise If you can’t go for a walk in the great outdoors, the next best thing is a regular indoor exercise routine. Volunteer From soup kitchens to mailing packages to soldiers or distributing toys to children in need, there are many charity organizations in need of help this time of year. Maintain a healthy diet The darkness, colder winter temperatures and the sense of “hibernation” can cause us to overeat and to crave sweets and carbohydrates – a clear prescription for unhealthy weight gain. Try to stay with healthy foods and balance your food intake with sufficient physical activity and exercise. Soups with meat for protein and an assortment of vegetables can be a warm, satisfying alternative to high calorie foods.

(This isn’t one of them.)

Whether it’s yoga, music, art or drama therapy, trips to cultural events or a walk in the woods, our memory support programs are tailored to meet the mind, body and spiritual needs of each resident. Call The Greens at Greenwich today to arrange a tour. Because not all assisted living communities are the same

Waveny LifeCare Network recently commemorated the legacy of one of its most devoted advocates and dearest friends, Richard B. White, by dedicating and naming The Village’s Piazza in his memory. Waveny’s seventh Board president, Dick White was a committed leader, trusted advisor, dedicated patron and champion of the capital campaign that funded and built The Village, Waveny’s award-winning assisted living residence. Grandma & Grandpa are on Facebook! Getting online in senior living is as normal, if not more normal, than playing Bingo these days. According to Pew Research Center and Princeton Survey Research Associates International, 53% of seniors are getting online and using the Internet, 34% are networking on social media sites and 86% are using email. That’s right—grandma’s on FB and Twitter. You may want to ‘watch your P’s and Q’s’ in your daily posts and tweets. It turns out that seniors of today are becoming more savvy when it comes to technology and keeping-up with their grandchildren. After all, why should all the fun be for the younger generations when iPads have such engaging apps, and webcams make long-distance communication with families so much easier? Well, simply put, it’s not. Many baby boomer grandmas and grandpas are hip and well-informed when it comes to modern-day technology. Six million more seniors are using the Web than five years ago, according to the Nielsen Company. In fact, the number of seniors using the Internet has increased by more than 55 % since 2004.

6 tips to maintain your diet during the holiday season (you can do it!) Stay slim with these six tips healthy eating for seniors! With these tricks, you can avoid picking up those extra pounds over the holidays. 1. Do not skip meals It may well be that you would like to skip lunch to have room for more food at a Christmas party in the evening. However, this not particularly good for your weight. If you skip a meal, there is a high probability that you will overeat later 2. Choose your favorite foods Eat only the foods that you really like at parties. Think about what you would like to taste before the noshing begins. This can make it easier when you stand in front of the spread. 3. Ask for the menu For private holiday parties you could ask your host about what kind of food that will be served, so that you can prepare. Most people will be very understanding of this, especially when it comes to a guest on a senior diet. This allows you to plan very precisely, what dishes to sink your teeth in. 4. Find a senior home care agency Many of these specialize in healthy eating for seniors and can prepare you varied, nutritious meal, with no effort on your behalf. Over the holidays you can ask you senior home care provider to make the meals extra low fat, high in fiber etc., to make up for the rich holidays foods you will be served. Meal preparation is the ultimate calorie controller for people on senior diets. 5. Limit your fat intake Cut visible fat from roasts etc. Limit the amount of roasted potatoes you eat, and eat plenty of greens. If you cannot do without gravy, try to eat as little as possible.

Travel tips for seniors during the holiday season It’s that time of year again, and if you’re planning to travel for the holidays, there are some important things that you should remember. Whether you’re flying out to visit with the family or driving to see family, the following tips will help make sure that you stay safe, save money and enjoy your holiday travel to the fullest

• Plan ahead: If you are driving, it makes sense to plan your route and the times you will be traveling ahead of time. Pick the most efficient route for you. This does not mean the quickest route. You want to pick the route that will get you to your destination quickly, but safely. Sometimes that means taking the long way around. For instance, when traveling near large cities, you will often have the choice of a route around the city or through it. Unless your destination is inside the city, you may want to go around. Taking the long way around will allow you to avoid unnecessary traffic jams and accidents. Plan your route so that you are traveling through the highest traffic areas in the late morning, afternoon, or late evening to avoid the morning and evening rushes. • Always have a backup: If you don’t have a smart phone or prefer not to use one, take your map and use highlighters. Highlighting your route will make it easy to see where you are going. Add and highlight exit numbers and rest stops as well. The easier it is to see, the less stressful your tip will be. • Plan ahead when flying to save money: Purchase your tickets ahead of time for lower prices and travel on lighter traveling days. You can sign up for many online services that will let you know ahead of time about travel deals during the holidays. The day before Thanksgiving and the following Sunday are the busiest travel days, so avoid traveling by air on those days. Flying on Black Friday will almost guarantee that you will avoid the crowds because most people will be shopping. • Take advantage of mobile apps: iPhone users can take advantage of useful applications on their phones. Smart phones can track airport information while traveling. Keep track of gate changes, flight delays, take-off times, and eating and bathroom locations (for those “gotta go now!” times). Some airlines have apps for check-in, tracking flight status, and even seat confirmation. Whether driving or flying, smart phones have great GPS applications that will get you where you’re going without having to look at a map. • Be sure to fill up: Driving in bad weather is taxing enough without worrying about running out of gas. Be sure to fill your tank when it hits the halfway point so that you don’t risk running out.

Great Holiday gift ideas for the caregiver in your life The holiday season is the perfect time to give a caregiver a touching gift that gives them an opportunity to do something good for themselves. For caregivers, the best gifts are often the simplest — love, encouragement, a helping hand. Here are five great Holiday gift ideas for the caregiver in your life. 1. Gift certificates: It’s a personalized gift that demonstrates you care and appreciate what they’re going through. How about a gift certificate for a one-on-one date to dinner and a movie? Combine it with pre-arranged respite care by arranging for another family member or friend to sit with the care recipient while you are out. 2. A good meal: Offer up a home-cooked meal or give a gift card to the recipient’s favorite restaurant. Another idea is to put together a gift basket filled with ingredients for easy-to-prepare meals. How about a cookbook with 10-minute crockpot meals or food you’ve prepared yourself that can be frozen and reheated for a full, nourishing meal when time is limited? 3. Home monitoring system: One of the biggest challenges of caring for an aging loved one is taking time away from your own family. So if the caregiver on your list is spending a lot of time with an aging parent and less time at home with her family, a home monitoring system can be a lifeline. 4. A tablet or smartphone: More caregivers are relying on technology to research their loved one’s medical needs, communicate with long-distance family members to keep them in the loop, and to coordinate caregiving duties between multiple family members. A mobile device like a tablet or smartphone is a welcome gift that can make a caregiver’s life much more organized and less stressful.

5. Personalized mixed CDs or playlists. Music is an excellent stress-reliever and it’s also been shown to be highly beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, making it a perfect gift for a caregiver caring for someone with cognitive impairment.

10 holiday gifts that will make the senior in your life feel special ■ Sing along. Caroling is a fun activity for most any age. Why not get a group of your senior loved one’s friends together to serenade other older adults in an assisted living facility or nursing home? ■ Celebrate the reason for the season. Faith and holiday programs bring much joy to the lives of older adults. Be flexible and change traditions if necessary. For instance, attend early Christmas Eve service, not midnight Mass. ■ Shop — but not until you drop! Conditions such as macular degeneration, which lead to poor eyesight and the inability to drive, can make shopping difficult for older adults. Why not make it a special event to look forward to by taking your older adult to a favorite store or make online shopping an experience he or she won’t forget? Tune into seniors’ limitations and don’t overdo. ■ Focus on others. Volunteering to assist others can help seniors focus on someone else’s needs other than their own. Get the entire family involved in gathering supplies for a homeless shelter or serving a holiday meal. ■ Stay connected. The holidays can be a sad time for those seniors separated from their families. Help an older adult connect with loved ones far away with the latest technology, such as Skype. ■ Give the gift of time. Sometimes all an older adult wants is companionship, whether it’s a few moments of the day or a driving tour to view holiday lights. If you are short of time, consider the assistance of a family friend or neighbor.

You likely won’t find these gifts on the holiday wish list of your favorite senior, but they will mean so much to them. Even better, you don’t even need a big budget or a creative gift list to make the senior loved one feel special this holiday season. ■ Keep food traditions alive. Food can play such an important role in the holidays for seniors. If an older adult can no longer cook the traditional holiday meal, why not offer to carry on the tradition, asking the senior to help where he or she can help with a nice Hanukkah dinner? ■ Make a special delivery. Arthritis can make wrapping those holiday presents a challenge; so too can shipping gifts to loved ones afar. Why not schedule a gift-wrapping afternoon, complete with hot chocolate, cookies and plenty of family stories? ■ Deck the halls. Carting out those favorite holiday ornaments isn’t always possible for an older adult with a bad back or weak muscles. Neither is stringing the lights or hanging the ornaments. Make it a great multigenerational activity by sending over the grandkids or great-grandchildren. ■ Send holiday greetings. The handwritten Christmas card is one of the most popular traditions of this generation of seniors. Why not lend a hand and offer to spend an afternoon writing greetings? If that’s not possible, an online photo greeting card can be just as good (and save the cost of cards and stamps).

Who qualifies for a Life Insurance Settlements or an Advanced Benefit Loan?

How seniors can manage holiday stress With travel, family and social engagements, house guests, shopping and a million other to-dos, the holidays can be overwhelming for anyone. However, for seniors the holidays can bring additional stress from multiple travel plans, an uprooted routine and even seasonal depression. Use these five tips to help keep holiday stress to a minimum for your senior loved one. 1. Set realistic goals: Visiting family and friends is always on the to-do list during the holiday season, but traveling and meeting with people all day can be physically and mentally exhausting. Make sure to schedule rest time throughout and allow for plenty of transportation time in between visits so that there's no rushing around to see last-minute guests. 2. Keep set schedules: If your senior parent or friend is used to waking up at a certain time, eating at a certain time and going to bed at a certain time, make sure to respect those schedules. Staying up later to accommodate family visits or having to eat later in the evening because of a difference in meal times can be difficult and stressful for a senior to acclimate to, so make sure you know beforehand what their schedule is like. 3. Keep expenses down: Many seniors are on fixed incomes, so keeping costs low can help ease any financial stress associated with the holidays. Travel, gifts and food can all start to take their toll on the checkbook, so make sure to create a realistic budget and stick to it. 4. Plan ahead: A marathon shopping trip may not be the best idea for a senior who has difficulty walking or standing for long periods of time. If these types of activities are unavoidable, make sure that a walker or wheelchair is available to make activities easier and more comfortable. 5. Keep friends and family around: Along with the fun and happy aspects of holidays comes sadness for many seniors - especially those who've lost loved ones. Be sure to not isolate yourself or your elderly companion. There are always churches and other civic organizations that offer holiday parties and gatherings, or volunteering at a local organization to stay social during the holidays.

At B & M Capital Inc., we advise on the various financial benefits of selling or taking a loan against your life insurance policy either through a life settlement or an advanced benefit loan. When we speak to individuals or professionals at seminars and conferences, they are amazed to learn how old the life settlement industry, about 100 years, and how many financial institution own or invest in this type of business. Yet, the greatest misconception in educating potential clients and professionals is, who are the people that qualify for a life settlement or advanced benefit loan? The answer to all of them is anyone who has obtained the age of 65 or older. They must be of retirement age, not necessary retired. They can still be actively working; actually, some of these people are still active members in the work force. The point that I am trying to get across is, today’s seniors are very different than what society shows us or what we perceive in our minds. Seniors, who are looking for other financial sources to find income or raise fund do not have to be hospitalized, terminally ill or destitute. There are many seniors who take advantage of our services that are in generally good health and financially sound. Here are some reasons why seniors take advantage of our services:

1. They are outliving their retirement funds due to the advancement in medicine, change in life style,

and the cost of living in the Northeast. Most seniors that live in the tri state area, enjoy being close to the greatest City in the world and do not want to leave. They have made friends, families, memories, and built a life that is unique to the Northeast. I know this to be true because; this is what I was told by my own parents, who were not born in this region.

2. Seniors are still very shrewd investors. Once I explain to seniors

how much value their life insurance contract could be possibly worth. They are quick to act. First we start with basic underwriting requirements and we submit the necessary paperwork. No cost to my client, a potential offer is then offered by a top-tier financial company. In a three to four week span, my clients are amazed on how easy and financially rewarding this type of transaction can be.

B & M Capital is a structured settlement company specializing in the purchasing of life insurance, annuities, structured settlements and offering Advanced Benefit Loans.

Begin with a five- to 10-minute warmup. Take a brief walk or march in place. Add arm movements and stretching your back to warm up the upper body. Dress appropriately. Wearing layers allows you to adjust to the temperature outside. Cover your skin to prevent frostbite. Use a small shovel that has a curved handle. A shovel with wet snow can weigh up to 15 pounds. Separate your hands on the shovel. By creating space between your hands, you can increase your leverage on the shovel. Lift with your legs, not your back. Make sure your knees are bending and straightening to lift instead of leaning forward and straightening with the back. Shovel frequently. Don’t wait till the snow piles up. Shovel intermittently, about every two inches.
