Jewish Home Lifecare Celebrates 11th Sarah Neuman Gourmet Tasting Event On Sunday, May 6th, 180 foodies gathered at Century Country Club in Purchase, NY, for the 11th Sarah Neuman Gourmet Tasting. Sponsored by the Friends of Sarah Neuman, the event raised more than $60,000 earmarked for special programming to enhance the quality of life of elders living at Sarah Neuman Center in Westchester.

During the course of the evening, participants sampled the signature cuisines from 12 of the most renowned restaurants and bakeries in Westchester, all of which donated their food for the cause, including Club Car, Douro, La Panetiere, La Provencal, Moscato, Plates, The Willett House, Turkish Maze, Lisi’s Luscious Desserts, Susan Ryan Cakes and 4 O’Clock Cookie.

New York Times Food Columnist and cookbook author Melissa Clark shared inside cooking tips, talked about the relationship between food, health and aging and responded to questions as she prepared a roasted salmon dish in front of the crowd.

During her remarks, Sarah Neuman Board Chair Lisa Feiner highlighted the exciting renovations taking place on the Sarah Neuman Campus, which will feature the Green House® model of care. She emphasized how the transformation “will fundamentally change nursing care in Westchester by providing elders with more independence, dignity and choice.”

Additionally, event founder, Honorary Chair and Sarah Neuman Board Member Pat Jacobs announced that she was underwriting a dining room and living room for the new Sarah Neuman Pavilion 1 building, in memory of her husband, former Sarah Neuman Board Chair Dick Jacobs.

Kathleen Donahue, Beverage Manager, Willett House, holds a photo of her mother, Mary, who spent the last two years over her life at Sarah Neuman Center. “At Sarah Neuman, she made many friends, was active and was no longer isolated like she had been when she lived alone in her Yonkers apartment. She was livelier than she had been in years.” Kathleen, who lives just a few blocks away from Sarah Neuman, visited her mother several times a week; the other residents and staff quickly became her “second family.” Not only did she arrange and pay for lunch at Willett House for her mother and the 60 residents over a period of several months, Kathleen hosts pizza parties for the residents and often volunteers. During the Gourmet Tasting, Kathleen arranged for a generous donation from Willett House – roasted filet mignon on garlic toast points and a choice of sauces.

Salute to Seniors is a hit, again This salute was, once again, a success.

The 45th annual Salute to Seniors was recently held at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, complete with live Motown and Caribbean music, acrobats, more than 100 businesses and government agencies with products and services of special interest to older adults and a Health and Wellness Fair guaranteed to inspire better lifestyles.

The Salute was sponsored by the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services and three county departments: Senior Programs and Services, Parks and Public Works and Transportation. It drew about 3,000 people.

DSPS Commissioner Mae Carpenter said the Salute always takes place in May because it’s Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme is “Unleash the Power of Age.” “I love that theme,” Carpenter said. “Older Americans have lots of power they can use to enhance the quality of life for their communities and for themselves. Seniors who join us at the Salute will get a head start in learning how to do just that.”

The Wartburg Adult Care Community in Mount Vernon provided transportation to the Salute for senior groups and other seniors who live in apartment buildings in southern Westchester.

Live entertainment was provided by three newcomers to Salute this year. Guests relaxed and reminisced to the Motown sounds of Linwood Peel, former lead singer for the Drifters, as he performs their unforgettable classics such as “Under the Boardwalk” and “There Goes My Baby.”

Enjoy the catchy Caribbean rhythms of Steel Passion, a steel drum band, and be thrilled by the acrobatic duo from WOWfactor Talent.

Also new was the “Age of Champions,” a documentary about five competitors who sprint, leap and swim for gold at the National Senior Olympics. They include a tennis player who is 100 years old and grandmothers who play a spirited game of basketball. The award-winning film will be shown at 11 a.m., and is sponsored by Healthways Silver Sneakers Fitness program, which aims to increase physical activity in older adults.

After a rigorous schedule that included as much as two, 1 ½ hour sessions of physical therapy and a half hour of occupational therapy each day, Arguiarro progressed from learning to stand to

Earlier this spring, Valentina Arguiarro walked out of Sound Shore Medical Center’s Schaffer Extended Care Center after seven months of intensive rehabilitative therapy..

In the process, Arguiarro’s inspirational story, was complete.

This feel good story isn’t only about Arguiarro, 76. It’s about a rehabilitation department whose staff was dedicated to making the seemingly impossible, possible.

With the support of her family, friends and her faith as well as the expertise of an exceptional Schaffer staff, she has defied the odds and inspired many in the process.

Last September, Arguiarro was admitted to a borough hospital for shortness of breath. That re-

sulted in a six-week stay and conditions that didn’t permit her return home to her role as the primary caregiver for her aunt.

Arguiarro now required caregivers of her own. Having family in the New Rochelle area, she found herself transported to the suburbs for her rehabilitation and intensive physical therapy.

A combination that would hopefully restore strength to her weakened limbs and return her to the long walks she loved. For a career woman, who retired after 40 years with JP Morgan Chase as a Vice President, being bedridden was not in the plans. Her will to walk again was as fierce as was the dedication of her chief physical therapist in Schaffer’s rehabilitation department.

Learn to Think, Eat and Be Healthy at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital’s Senior Fitness Day Did you know that physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health?

It can help control your weight, reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, strengthen your bones and muscles, and increase your chances of living longer.

As you grow older, it is important to continue taking part in physical activities.

A recent study at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign found that senior citizens who integrated physical activity into a daily routine began to see an improvement in physical fitness, as well as a raised self-esteem.

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital encourages seniors to participate in physical activity and educates them about the numerous benefits associated with participating in a daily fitness routine. To bring this message home, Burke will be hosting the 2013 Senior Health and Fitness Day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 29.

The event will be held in the Rosedale Room of the Billings Building on Burke’s campus, 785 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains. The day’s activities include fitness classes, education seminars and self-improvement information sessions aimed at enhancing daily living.

"Health and fitness is important throughout our lives but becomes especially important as we age,” said Heather Massimo, director of the Fitness Center at Burke.

“We want to motivate and encourage people to continue to perform activities of daily living.”

Equal Access Campaign Launched: It’s Good Business County Executive Robert P. Astorino joined Joe Bravo, executive director of the Westchester Independent Living Center (WILC), and four county organizations recently to officially launch Equal Access Westchester, a campaign devoted to promoting accessibility for people with disabilities throughout Westchester County.

The Equal Access Westchester Web site provides information on accessible transportation, dining, shopping, lodging, and recreation venues in Westchester County; ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) information; tax incentives for businesses; Westchester County's Livable Communities Initiative, and more.

Equal Access provides opportunities for communities to adapt to the needs of their ever changing demographics and to serve the interests of ALL of their residents. It provides varied business opportunities that serve and are friendly to people of ALL ages and capabilities. And, Equal Access provides an expanded customer base for businesses.

The campaign is designed to help businesses learn how “equal access is good business.” A key tool is a new Web site: Equal Access Westchester.

Equal Access Westchester is a unique partnership of the Westchester County Human Rights Commission, Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, Westchester County Office for the Disabled, Westchester County Tourism & Film, and the Westchester Independent Living Center who were united by a mutual commitment to provide accessibility information to Westchester's business community.

Senior tips for keeping cool and safe in the Here comes the heat, as in the summer.

Of course, everyone enjoys a little summer fun.

However, high temperatures can take a toll on health. Seniors especially should take extra care to keep cool and hydrated during hot, humid days. Here are a few tips for enjoying the summer weather while keeping comfortable and safe: Clothes – Wear light colors and light materials such as linen and cotton. Materials such as rayon and polyester tend to trap heat close to the skin.

– Wear loose fitting clothing.

– Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect the face.

Home – Stay indoors during extremely hot weather.

– Lower shades, blinds, or close drapes on the east side of your home during the morning hours and the west side during the afternoon in order to keep your home or apartment as cool as possible.

Use a fan in the rooms where the windows are covered.

– If you do not have air conditioning in your home, go to your local Council on Aging/senior center, Aging Service Access Point, mall, movie theater or library in order to stay cool. continued on next page

Sound Shore Extended Care Center earns 4-Star Rating Sound Shore Medical Center recently announced that its Schaffer Extended Care Center’s 4-star ranking in the recently released Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services report.

This Medicare Nursing Home ranking system offers consumers the ability to compare nursing homes. Using health inspection ratings over the last three years, in 10 Quality Measures, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid assigns stars for the level of quality. This assessment reviews a facility’s performance including staffing with attention to the number of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Nursing Aides per resident/per day.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ report confirms that nursing homes affiliated with hospitals and those that are not-for-profit usually score higher than their counterparts. Both of these benefits apply to Schaffer. The 4-Star Overall Rating - which includes 4 stars in each of the 10 areas of measure – places Schaffer in the top 1/3 of more than 16,000 nursing homes nationally.

Speaking about the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recent report, John R. Spicer, President and CEO of Sound Shore Medical Center, said, “While the Center’s Rating System provides a benchmark, individual’s considering placement for a loved one should still rely on their personal reaction during an onsite visit.

A reaction to an in-person observation is vital and should include considerations, such as: Are the residents engaged? Is there good interaction between patients and care staff? Is the facility orderly and clean? Is the staff open to your questions? Can you see your loved one in this setting?” He concluded, “These ratings should help guide a selection, but they should be only one of many factors that determine a placement decision.”

The Phelps Vitality Initiative brings health, wellness and aging-in-place programs to seniors in the community. The gatherings are all free and open to the public. Following are descriptions of the Vitality programs that seniors are enjoying at Phelps:

The Breakfast Club is a social gathering for adults in their second half of life, which meets once a month (except in August and December) on Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 10:30 am. Each Breakfast Club includes a presentation on a health topic, a nutritious breakfast and some light exercise.

Cool Conversations is a group that meets after the Breakfast Club to engage in some lively conversation on a variety of interesting topics.

The program is meant to be social as well as intellectually stimulating.

Mind Games is a fun way to stimulate various cognitive functions – memory, problem solving, focus and speed. If you are you having trouble remembering things or feel that you are easily confused, come join the fun! The Memory Game, Boggle, Set and Sporcle are just a few of the games played, one Wednesday afternoon a month.

Senior Steps offers participants health screenings, nutrition education, exercise and special events. The club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 10 – 11:30 am.

Living Well, sponsored by the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, is a series of six workshops designed to help seniors manage their chronic health problems.
