Maspeth private house On May 13, 2013 at approximately 8:00 a.m., FDNY units in Maspeth responded to a house fire at 73-32 53 Road. The fire was located in the basement of a two and a half story wood frame private dwelling. Two lines were stretched and operated at this fire. One civilian was rescued by members and transported to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition. The fire was placed under control at 8:50 a.m.

FDNY, BCVFD and WHBVFD respond to major accident The FDNY, Broad Channel and the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a major accident in the Broad Channel area of Queens on Friday, May 10th around 5:00 p.m. There was a total of ten patients transported, with two in critical condition and three with serious injuries. The 17 year old driver of the white Honda was speeding in excess of 100 mph, with a doughnut (spare tire) mounted in the rear and

six passengers when he suddenly lost control, hopped a grassy median and slammed into two oncoming vehicles. The impact caused the Honda to split in half, separating the engine from the rest of the vehicle and sending pieces of the vehicle in every direction. “It’s amazing no one was
killed,” a police source said. Southbound traffic on Cross Bay Boulevard was shut down for hours while the NYPD investigated the motor vehicle collision. The incident occurred in a secluded area of the boulevard surrounded by the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, a mile south of the North Channel Bridge. All patients were in stable condition by Saturday. - RICHIE YORK

Front of fire building
All hands in Jackson Heights On April 11, 2013 at 7:00 p.m., all hands went to work at Queens Box 7765, located at 30-65 86 Street in the Jackson Heights section of the borough. At 7:06 p.m., Battalion 49 transmitted the all hands and reported fire in a two story brick private dwelling 20x40 with heavy fire conditions in the basement with heavy smoke throughout the building.

A burst length on the first line resulted in a mayday being transmitted by Engine 307. As the F.A.S.T. truck was entering the building, the members of Engine 307 were exiting on their own. All members were accounted
for and the mayday was canceled. Two firefighters were treated and removed to local hospitals by FDNY/EMS. Both injuries were non life threatening. Two additional trucks were special called to the scene. The fire was placed under control at 7:45 p.m.

100 years for Engine 277 Engine 277 and Ladder 112 recently celebrated 100 years of service to the community of Bushwick, Brooklyn with a ceremony at their quarters. Past and present firefighters attended the ceremony. Their firehouse was rebuilt and their new quarters was dedicated in 1977. “The traditions of the firefighters who came before you now live through all of you,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said. “You’ve overcome any challenges to get the job done.”

Midwood Ambulance unveils NYC’s first ever pink ambulance Brooklyn, NY. Midwood Ambulance recently celebrated EMS Week by unveiling their newest vehicle, a brand-new pink ambulance designed and dedicated to supporting breast cancer awareness. The first of its kind in the New York City area, this incredibly unique pink ambulance by Midwood Ambulance has the pink breast cancer ribbon logo emblazoned on it along with the "Join the Fight" slogan painted on the vehicle. EMT's and paramedics working on this ambulance will be wearing pink gloves. During the festivities, a giant tarp was literally pulled off the pink ambulance by representatives of the American Cancer Society and a group of breast cancer survivors, along with Midwood Ambulance staff who, in honor of breast cancer awareness, wore pink "Join the Fight" shirts and pink gloves. Several Midwood employees also received 20 year length of service awards at the event that included a staff barbeque under a large tent. Al Rapisarda, President of Midwood Ambulance, stated, "We are proud to serve the New York City community and beyond as the health and well being of all residents of our region is so very important to us. Our pink ambulance will be a visual reminder every day of our commitment to the patients we serve, many of whom have been diagnosed with breast cancer." He added, "We want to show our support for these women by creating awareness, promoting prevention, education and treatment of breast cancer... and not just during the

month of October, when there is a national focus on breast cancer, but through a commitment all yearround." According to Mr. Rapisarda, "Our commitment to breast cancer is personal. Two alarm in Ozone Park On Saturday, May 11th, 2013, Battalion 51 transmitted a second alarm at 4:50 p.m. on arrival to Box 99-22-6093 for the address of 105-06 131st Street in Ozone Park, Queens. BC-51 reported fire on the first, second floor and attic of a two and a half story private dwelling with extension to exposures two and four. By 5:09, BC-51 put the incident probably will hold, with the main bodies of fire knocked down and negative primary and secondary searches.

MVA extrication in Brooklyn FDNY Ladder 120 responded to a two car MVA on Eastern Parkway and Rockaway Avenue for people possibly trapped inside a vehicle. On arrival, they confirmed the pin job and removed doors to properly extricate the victims for EMS. EMS Station 44 is located a block away and had units on scene immediately. A total of six patients were transported to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition. NYPD ESU also assisted with the extrication.

I want to start by thanking our troops who risk everything for me to have the freedom that I have here. They are truly great. Second, thanks to Chief Lerch and Lieutenant Dan Maye and the FDNY Mand Library for all of their help with this and future articles. For my inaugural column, I think it would only be fitting to talk about a truly stunning firehouse located on 67th Street in Manhattan, 39 Engine and 16 Truck. In 1998 it was designated a city landmark by the landmarks preservation commission. Built in 1884 and finished in 1886, this six story building was designed by famed architect Napoleon Lebrun, who would design more than forty firehouses for the city during a ten year span. This was the first headquarters for the New York City Fire Department. Prior to the merger of the five boroughs, the Brooklyn Fire Department had its own headquarters located on Jay Street in downtown Brooklyn. Although the department would be officially organized in 1865, it would not incorporate the other boroughs until 1898. This firehouse would also serve as the offices of the chief of the department, commissioners and staff, as well as the school of instruction for probies, medical office and the fire alarm telegraph system. Today, 39 Engine was established in March of 1875 and 16 Truck was established in November of 1873, along with High Rise Unit No. 2. After touring this firehouse twice, it is easy to fall in love with its character and Romanesque style. It fits in in one of Manhattans nicest neighborhoods, the Upper East Side.

When built, it included a 150 foot tall tower that was used as a fire watch to scan the horizon for fires. It would be removed two decades later due to the fact that larger buildings were now being built obscuring its views. One other note was that this being the training facility all the scaling ladder drills were performed here on the rear windows of the fire watch tower. Chris Hoell of the St Louis Fire Department was hired in 1883 to train the FDNY members in the recently invented Hoell life saving appliance, which would later be named the scaling ladder. The use of this device, enabling firemen to go from floor to floor on the outside of the building, is such a daring feat that no matter what period of time it was used, absolutely took nerves of steel. When entering this firehouse, it is truly a step back in time...if these walls could talk. It makes me wish I was entering inside for the first time one hundred years ago to see what the times and the men were like and to see the old equipment being driven by the horses. It was a much more simple time, but so much more appealing from an historic standpoint. I don’t know what is my favorite feature, from the pink polished granite columns that surround the front door to the oval balconies on the third floor or the ornamental tin ceilings and oak interiors. All was built for $175,000. Despite its beauty, members do have to work hard to keep it clean and very presentable. They do a good job of it and a lot of company pride is present here. I implore anyone who has an affinity for character and style to see this firehouse. - LARRY WOODCOCK
