After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 1241 Mamaroneck Ave. right here in White Plains, NY who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

SPOTLIGHT:

It’s no wonder that Christine Sotmary doesn’t own a television set. After all, who has time for sitcoms, reality shows or, even the six o’clock news, when you are as active and busy as Sotmary. Sotmary, who lives in northern Westchester County, is a certified life coach acupuncturist and teaches tai chi to seniors. And in her free time? Let’s just say Sotmary is busy. Real busy. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. Sotmary, is a triathlete, jazz musician and enjoys salsa and ballroom dancing. Oh, and one last thing: Sotmary is also working on a book about caregiving. Her best advice as a life coach: “I think it’s about being able to change people’s perspectives. People are just often overwhelmed by things in life. I can’t do things for them, but I can help them get there. I’ve had clients call me from Taiwan and Uganda. You just have to help them have that aha moment and work with them from there.” Why she is a life coach?: “Because I was doing acupuncture and a lot of clients were asking me for advice. I found that they said: ‘OK, that sounds like good advice.’ But they still have to do it. It has to come from them. I wanted to help people get there.” What makes her a good life coach?: “Number one is listening and number two is being ready to react to questions. You have to have an agile brain and flip questions quickly, yet not be judgemental.”

Her most rewarding experience as a life coach: “A woman had come to me after she lost her job and she wanted to get into film. She thought she was too old, worthless, she had a lot of excuses. But she got into film and she was so happy. That was rewarding.” If she wasn’t doing what she’s doing: “I would be a teacher, maybe music. I love teaching.” In five years, she will be: “I’m going to create, train and certify to help people specialize in working with families with a sick or disabled person. I’m writing the curriculum now.” Christine Sotmary’s websites www.acucoach.com www.gotcoaching.com www.caregiversaccess.org

Client Testimonials I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself, horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Multiple complications sadly occurred for Mom, on each one I did what I could to resolve them and bring her comfort. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now for over 4 years. You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, due to your many successes, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself. You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig.

A team approach with Dentists, ENT’s, Pulmonologists, Orthodontists, and Oral Myologists can effectively treat your sleep disorder. INTRODUCTION Snoring and Sleep Apnea are common conditions in our society today. They are caused by a narrowing or collapse of the airway during sleep. Snoring or sleep apnea appliances are devices that are worn in the mouth during sleep that are designed to reposition the lower jaw so that the airway is supported in such a way that air can flow more freely. This reduces or eliminates snoring and can treat your sleep apnea, which can lead to a more quiet, restful night’s sleep. CAUSES OF SNORING 70-90 million people are affected by snoring. Snoring can occur when the airway becomes partially blocked during sleep. This may occur more frequently when: ❖ You sleep on your back ❖ You are overweight ❖ You have a large neck size ❖ The tongue falls back into the throat ❖ The tonsils and/or adenoids are large ❖ You mouth breathe during sleep ❖ You are overly tired ❖ You eat or drink alcohol too late at night ❖ You have a cold or are congested Snoring becomes more common: ❖ As we get older ❖ If you are a male ❖ After menopause ❖ If you have a small airway (may be genetic)

WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA? Sleep Apnea is estimated to affect 20 million people. Sleep Apnea occurs when the airway becomes completely blocked and air is not able to move through the airway. This is commonly called Obstructive Sleep Apnea because the airway is totally obstructed. This obstruction may occur anywhere from the area of the soft palate down to below the tongue. When the airway is obstructed, the patient will awaken many times during the night with a cough or gasping sound as the body attempts to restore normal breathing. SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS The most common symptoms and signs of Sleep Apnea: ❖ Snoring ❖ Non-refreshing sleep ❖ Daytime fatigue or tiredness ❖ History of falling asleep driving, watching TV, or reading ❖ Awaken during sleep coughing, choking, or gasping ❖ Morning headaches ❖ Elevated blood pressure ❖ Cardiovascular disease Other commonly occurring findings associated with Snoring and Sleep Apnea: ❖ Gastric reflux or acid reflux with indigestion ❖ Grinding of the teeth during sleep (Bruxism) ❖ Symptoms of depression, anxiety, dementia ❖ Diabetes ❖ Mood swings

alternative medicine

Many types of alternative medicine have become increasingly popular. Nearly 40 percent of U.S. adults report using alternative medicine, according to the Mayo Clinic, and doctors are learning more about these treatments. Alternative medicine is the term for medical products and practices that are not part of standard care. Standard care is what medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy and allied health professionals, such as registered nurses and physical therapists, practice. Alternative medicine means treatments that you use instead of standard ones. Complementary medicine means nonstandard treatments that you use along with standard ones.

Here is a look at some popular alternative medicine treatments and how they can potentially benefit you: Acupuncture: Is the practice of inserting thin needles into specific body points to improve health and well-being. It originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. Over the past three decades, its popularity has grown significantly within the United States. Traditional Chinese theory explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force in the body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance. Many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. This stimulation appears to boost the activity of the body’s natural painkillers and increase blood flow. Reiki: Is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Reiki practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above the person receiving treatment, with the goal of facilitating the person’s own healing response. It is based on the idea that there is a universal (or source) energy that supports the body’s innate healing abilities. Practitioners seek to access this energy, allowing it to flow to the body and facilitate healing. Homeopathic remedies are derived from natural substances that come from plants, minerals, or animals. Common remedies include red onion, arnica (mountain herb), and stinging nettle plant. Homeopathy is used for wellness and prevention and to treat many diseases and conditions. Chiropractic: Chiropractic professionals are doctors of chiropractic, or D.C.s. They use a type of hands-on therapy called spinal manipulation or adjustment. Many people visit chiropractors for treatment of low back pain. continued on next page

alternative medicine continued from previous page The basic concepts of chiropractic are: 1. Your body has a powerful self-healing ability; 2. Your body’s structure (mainly the spine) and its function are related; 3. The goal of chiropractic therapy is to normalize this relationship. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition. Reexology: The science or method of stimulating the reexes of the foot, hand or ear that correspond to each gland, organ and part of the body. Stimulation of these reexes serves to relax and normalize all functions of the body in order to promote natural balance and revitalization. Reexology can relieve tension and promote relaxation. Many medical problems can be linked to tension and stress. Although it is still gaining popularity in the U.S., reexology has been practiced for thousands of years in China and was used in Mayan and Incan civilizations. Homeopathic and herbal medicine: Also known as homeopathic medicine, this medical system originated in Europe. Homeopathy seeks to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself by giving very small doses of highly diluted substances that in larger doses would produce illness or symptoms. Massage therapy: Has become an important part of health care for many people dealing with stress. It is the manipulation of body tissues to promote wellness and reduce pain and stress and involves a variety of techniques such as stroking or kneading for applying pressure to speciďŹ c points. Ayurveda: Originated in India and is based on the theory that illness results from the imbalance of the body’s life force. Ayurveda uses diet, exercise, meditation, yoga, herbs, and internal cleansing to achieve the harmony of body, mind, and spirit and restore balance within the body and with nature. Naturopathy: Uses body’s natural healing abilities in prevention and treatment of disease through a healthy lifestyle. It builds immunity, improves mental health, and enhances body functions. Naturopathy mainly focuses on ďŹ nding the cause of the disease rather than merely treating the symptoms of disease. It uses diet, homeopathy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, herbal medicine, and other therapies to return the body to a state where it can heal itself.

ASK AN EXPERT Precision Restorative Dentistry By Edward Feinberg DMD We live in a society that rarely considers the long term. Everything is short term these days--a quick, easy fix. Patients do not want treatments that require many visits. For dentists, a quick, easy fix means increased profit. As a result, most dentists are trained with a piece-meal approach to dentistry--an approach that only considers filling a hole or a space. This approach works around abnormalities rather than correcting them. “We always hope for the easy fix, "says Dr. Atul Gawande in his best-selling book Better, "the one simple change that will erase a problem in a stroke. But few things in life work this way. Instead, success requires making a hundred small steps go right". Sadly, standards are being lowered throughout our whole society, and Dentistry is no different. A high degree of precision is becoming increasingly uncommon. Real precision cannot be accomplished quickly. As a result, most dentistry is only fabricated to an acceptable standard so that it is serviceable, esthetic, profitable, and fast. Some practitioners count only on restorations lasting five years so that the insurance company can pay for a new one. “What is troubling", says Dr. Gawande, "is not just being average, but settling for it”. Patients do not realize how diligent attention to precision now will save them chair time and money in the future. The best treatment really is the least expensive in the long run. Why is precision important? Dentists and patients alike expect dentistry to last continuously in health for many years. That dentistry must function 24 hours a day under forces and under water in a hostile environment loaded with bacteria. The tolerances for fabricating this dentistry are measured in tenths of millimeters, while the disease-causing bacteria are nanometers in size (one millimeter equals one million nanometers). It is amazing that dentistry can last at all under these conditions! It is not just the tolerances of measurement that must be dealt with—it is the the indirect methods

the decay and compensate for the periodontal bone loss. Great care was spent to make sure temporaries were comfortable, esthetic, functioned properly and did not fall out between visits.

Figure 1 by which they are shaped that can influence the outcome as well. Crowns and bridges are fashioned on models of the prepared teeth and they must be heated repeatedly at or near their melting points. Inaccuracies at any step can easily compound errors and compromise the end result. To a bacterium, these inaccuracies might as well be the Grand Canyon! To avoid this scenario, each step must be checked carefully by both the doctor and the laboratory team. Precision dentistry cannot be outsourced to places like the Philippines or China (an increasingly common practice) in the name of cost containment. A perfect example of precision dentistry is the case we recently completed for Ms. M. Her case took nearly two years to complete (with 60 to 90 minute visits on average once every three weeks). An analysis of hundreds of cases completed with the exact same protocol at our office since 1950 demonstrates that a high percentage last decades in health. Here's what we accomplished for Ms. M: A. Correction of Abnormalities, Elimination of Disease and Creation of Health. Ms. M. presented with an abnormal bite and teeth that had poor root anatomy, extensive fillings, decay and periodontal bone loss. Some teeth in the front were loose and could not be salvaged. Ms. M. did not want implants because she had already undergone jaw surgery. Her mouth was restored immediately with temporary restorations to correct the abnormal bite, eliminate

B. Three Dimensional Approach. The teeth were prepared to receive the dentistry in a three dimensional approach to create ideal health--that is they were prepared to relate to the bone and the gum in an ideal way at the same time. Because of this approach, the finished restorations relate perfectly to the underlying bone in the X-Rays and no one can tell that Ms. M. ever had a periodontal problem! C. Individual Impressions of Teeth. Individual impressions of the prepared teeth are taken with copper bands so that crowns fit with the highest degree of accuracy. In fact, they are typically worn for a trial period with Vaseline or a thin rubber-material prior to cementation and they do not fall out--even without posts or "build-ups"! The crowns are also designed on the principle of the Mason Jar Cover—the best invention ever devised for food --so recurrent decay is a rarity. The crown margins are located close to the bone and far below the gumline so that they are not visible.

Figure 2 larger teeth apply extra forces to the periodontal structures and can contribute to future periodontal problems. Every effort is therefore made to make the teeth smaller than the original.

D. No Steps are Skipped. When no steps are skipped “guesswork” is eliminated and the end result is both ideal and predictable. Any errors can be identified and corrected before they are compounded and compromise the end result. Two-visit crown and bridge often results in errors because there is so much that can go wrong with impressions, models, castings, soldering, or porcelain application.

F. Balanced Force Transmission. In addition to making the teeth smaller and bringing the forces closer to the bone, the forces are distributed evenly among all of the teeth in each arch. This is accomplished through splinting, or connecting the teeth. The teeth in each arch, however, are not connected by a single bridge commonly referred to as a "roundhouse". The roundhouse is a common practice that often leads to failure because it is impossible create exact parallelism among so many teeth. The materials are not accurate in large sections because of shrinkage and distortion that occurs during repeated heating at or near the melting point. Instead, three small bridges in each arch are precision connected with two "overlay bridges".

E. Ideal Architecture. Only 1.5 millimeters can actually be removed from a live tooth and the dentistry must be made with materials that are repeatedly heated close to their melting points. For this reason, restorative dentistry is commonly made larger than the original teeth. (Check out some of those Hollywood smiles!) Unfortunately,

Is all this precision worth it? There is no greater reward than watching precision dentistry last year after year in health. We take great pleasure in seeing very few changes in our post-operative full series of X-Rays—which are usually taken every two years. We look forward to seeing Ms. M. for many years at her hygiene visits!

ATTORNEYS AT LAW 15 YEARS OF ELDER LAW EXPERIENCE

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid. Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.

Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will? If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate. Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).

My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do?

HVHC physician assistant volunteers in African clinic Hudson Valley Hospital Center Physician Assistant Lindsay Aarstad didn’t know what to expect when she volunteered this summer to treat patients in a remote African village. But she quickly learned that she would have to overcome cultural differences to provide proper medical care to her new patients. “It was an 18-hour flight and another 18 hours driving just to get there,’’ said Aarstad of her trip to Kansana, the tiny village in Tanzania where she and her father volunteered. "Most of these people had very little contact with medical treatment so it was very difficult. They would bathe, cook and wash clothes in the same water so even explaining the importance of clean drinking water was a challenge.’’ Aarstad and her father, Philip, pastor of the Oasis Church in Beacon, spent 10 days in June at the missionary clinic run by one the church’s parishioners. The “Upendo Wa Mungu Clinic,” which translated means “The Love of God Clinic,” had just opened. She said it was little more than an empty building with very primitive facilities. Aarstad and another physician’s assistant saw more than 300 patients in just two days, treating everything from minor aches and pains to gangrene and malaria. “We were very grateful for the supplies donated by Hudson Valley Hospital Center,’’ said Aarstad. "The pharmacy supplied antibiotics and medications and the staff sent toys for the children, bubbles and coloring books. It was really generous.” Aarstad said dehydration was one of the most common problems she encountered, especially since locally distilled alcohol was more popular than water among the villagers. Her most challenging case, she said, was a man whose hand was so badly infected it had become gangrenous. “The nearest hospital is about two hours away and there you have to pay for your medical care up front so we collected about $250 and sent him to the hospital for his care, which in this case was amputation,’’ she said. Camping in the African bush without plumbing or running water was an adventure in itself. “Let’s say I was very happy to get back to hot water and showers,’’ said Aarstad. Contributions to the clinic are tax deductible and can be sent to Oasis Ministries at 7 Delavan Avenue, Beacon NY, 12508. One-hundred percent of donations go directly to the Upendo Wa Mungu Clinic.

As the weather begins to chill, families in Westchester County should be cautious and protect against the flu and common cold. Every year 200,000 children and adults are hospitalized in the United States due to the influenza virus infection which also leads to numerous missed days of school and work. The flu and common cold are both contagious respiratory illnesses and many times it is difficult to tell the difference between the two. For the most part, the symptoms associated with the flu are worse and more serious in nature.

Achoo! Here are some tips to help protect families against the common cold and the flu this season.

1

Get your flu vaccination today. According to the CDC, "The 2011-2012 flu vaccine will protect against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the season. This includes an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus and an influenza B virus."

2 3

Teach children about, and practice, hygienic infection control. Be sure to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, wash hands often with alcohol based gels and avoid touching your mouth or nose especially when symptomatic. Seek medical care within the first 24 to 48 hours after the onset of flu symptoms. Physicians can provide anti-viral medicines to help shorten the duration of the infection.

Cold Versus Flu What is the difference between a cold and the flu? The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar flu-like symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations. How can you tell the difference between a cold and the flu? Because colds and flu share many symptoms, it can be difficult (or even impossible) to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. Special tests that usually must be done within the first few days of illness can be carried out, when needed to tell if a person has the flu. Relax,

take a deep breath and say

Ommm

Yoga class is in session.

.

There are various styles of yoga that people use for health purposes, typically combining physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. Yoga is a mind and body practice in complementary medicine with origins in ancient Indian philosophy. There are numerous schools of yoga. Hatha yoga, the most commonly practiced in the United States and Europe, emphasizes postures (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama). Some of the major styles of hatha yoga include Iyengar, Ashtanga, Vini, Kundalini, and Bikram yoga. People use yoga for a variety of conditions and to achieve fitness and relaxation.

The 2007 National Health Interview Survey found that yoga is one of the top 10 complementary health practices used among U.S. adults. Here are five things you should know about yoga:

1 2 3 4 5

Studies suggest that yoga may be beneficial for a number of conditions, including pain. Recent studies in people with chronic low-back pain suggest that a carefully adapted set of yoga poses can help reduce pain and improve function. Other studies also suggest that practicing yoga (as well as other forms of regular exercise) might have other health benefits such as reducing heart rate and blood pressure, and may also help relieve anxiety and depression. Studies show that certain other health conditions may not benefit from yoga. Research suggests that yoga is not helpful for asthma, and studies looking at yoga and arthritis have had mixed results. Yoga is generally considered to be safe in healthy people when practiced appropriately. However, people with high blood pressure, glaucoma, or sciatica, and women who are pregnant should modify or avoid some yoga poses. Practice safely and mindfully. Everyone’s body is different, and yoga postures should be modified based on individual abilities. Carefully selecting an instructor who is experienced and is attentive to your needs is an important step toward helping you practice yoga safely. Inform your instructor about any medical issues you have, and ask about the physical demands of yoga. Talk to your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use, including yoga. If you’re thinking about practicing yoga, also be sure to talk to your health care providers. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. Source: National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine

So you want to eat healthy this Thanksgiving. But there's one problem: You aren’t doing the cooking because you’re celebrating the holiday at a friend or relative’s house Still, you can avoid grandma’s turkey smothered in gravy or Aunt Karen’s buttered corn, choosing healthier options. Here are some tips to eating healthy on Thanksgiving without starving yourself. Don’t arrive to the dinner table hungry. Make sure you eat a filling and nutritious breakfast or lunch. When hunger sets in as the aromas fill your host’s home, eat healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, nuts or any whole grain snacks.

Two words: Portion cont

rol.

Many people tend to overeat on Thanksgiving – and don’t get us started on leftovers. Try to keep your portions to a minimum.

When it comes to the turkey, if you have a choice, opt for breast meat rather than dark meat. Remove the skin no matter what part of the turkey you are served. Try to fill your plate with as many vegetables as possible. Of course, you can indulge in some stuffing. Just serve yourself a small portion. Also, remember, you don’t have to eat everything served. Maybe choose between mashed and sweet potatoes.

And here’s a tip:

Sweet potatoes are healthier. Mashed potatoes are often full of cream and butter.

Pass on the rolls of butter, they fill you up, and are loaded with extra calories. And, as hard as it may be to fathom, you should hold the gravy. At least, think of limiting it. And last, but certainly not least: Your favorite course. Right, dessert! Don’t stop reading. The good news: Pumpkin pie is not ideal when it comes to eating low health, but it’s an excellent source of vitamin A, and a good source of calcium and iron. Pumpkin pie is healthier than most typical Thanksgiving desert options. So you can indulge. Just remember those two words: Portion control.

Happy Thanksgiving!

From Mount Vernon to Mount Kilimanjaro: Wartburg’s Rev. Carol E. A. Fryer Climbs Africa’s Tallest Peak to Help Conquer Malaria

At the break of dawn on July 20, Rev. Carol E. A. Fryer, Senior Pastor, Director of Church Relations at The Wartburg Adult Care Community, and Pastor of United Lutheran Church on The Wartburg campus was amazed as she gazed out at the rising sun having just reached the summit of Uhuru Peak atop Mt. Kilimanjaro. She successfully climbed the tallest snowcapped mountain in Africa at 19,340 feet above sea level, participating in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Malaria Campaign to support African companion churches in their malaria prevention and treatment programs. This ELCA campaign is in conjunction with the United Nations Millennium Development Goal, with a long-range objective to raise $15 million and contain malaria by 2015.

As Rev. Fryer explained, “For every challenge in life, there is an opportunity. So if it takes climbing a 19,340-foot mountain to get people’s attention that every 45 seconds malaria kills a child under five years old in Africa, then count me in. Sure it was difficult, but not nearly as insurmountable as a child fighting diarrhea and pneumonia as malaria drains the life from his underdeveloped immune system… all because there weren’t enough mosquito nets, or medication, or education or food. Our mission was to raise awareness and to raise money to give these kids a fighting chance.” Making this historic climb with Rev. Fryer were Rev. Jack Horner, the Assistant to the Bishop for Evangelical Mission at the Metropolitan New York Synod of the ELCA, and Rev. Wvyetta Bullock, Executive for Administration in the Office of the

Presiding Bishop of the ELCA. Together, under the care of their three local guides – Seraphine, August & Anicet, a cook and 16 porters, the group began their journey on July 14 filled with anticipation and determination. Along the way, they climbed through five different climate zones, learned a Swahili folk song and never lost sight of their mission – to conquer malaria. The climb took seven days to summit and one day to descend. “When we were on the mountain, we were in a “malaria-free zone.” That’s what we hope for everyone – in Africa and around the world – a malaria-free zone. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was a life-long dream of mine. Being able to fulfill that dream and at the same time inspiring others to support the fight against malaria made it even more incredible.

If climbing Kilimanjaro again would bring an end to malaria, once and for all, I would do it in a minute!” said Rev. Fryer. Wartburg Cares!, an outreach ministry of The Wartburg, supported Rev. Fryer and participated in the ELCA’s Malaria Campaign – reaching across continents to provide support to the African communities touched by this terrible disease each day while carrying out their mission of providing ministries of healing and hope to those in need. David J. Gentner, President & CEO of The Wartburg and The Wartburg Foundation added, “We at The Wartburg could not be more proud of Rev. Fryer’s accomplishment. We are privileged to have her as our Pastor, as we benefit from her spiritual leadership here on campus every day. continued on next page

Through her innovative Wartburg Cares! Program, she has instilled a practical, life-inspiring spirituality throughout our campus, and beyond. She leads by example‌not just words. She doesn’t talk the talk, but rather walks the walk. In this case, an historic walk that has truly inspired us all.â€? The ELCA Malaria Campaign slogan is “A Penny A Foot!â€?. Since Mount Kilimanjaro is 19,340 feet high, the suggested contribution is $193.40 – a penny a foot. However, any amount is welcomed and gratefully received. Wartburg Cares! reported that the “penny a footâ€? slogan enabled everyone on The Wartburg campus – residents, registrants, family members, staff, volunteers and visitors – to participate in raising funds to eradicate Malaria in Africa. Residents of The Wartburg’s skilled nursing facility donated over 100 individual “Wartburg bingo bucksâ€? in support of Rev. Fryer’s climb. “I was inspired by Rev. Fryer’s unselfish act of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro that I just had to donate my bingo bucks to support her.â€? noted a resident. Solving the Small Business Owner’s Retirement Dilemma There’s a fatal flaw in the retirement of many small business owners: After pouring a lifetime of sweat, time and capital into building the business, their rough-sketch strategy is to sell out someday for a ton of money… then settle back and enjoy a financially secure retirement. Many business owners are so sure this will happen that they don’t bother to make any other retirement plans. Who is this person who, at just the right moment, is going to show up with cash in hand to buy the company… and pay a fair price? For thousands of small business owners each year, no one steps forward. Perhaps the business is too specialized or is tied too closely to the owner’s unique personality and skills. Or perhaps possible buyers equate retirement sale with distress sale and make only low-ball offers. Whatever the reason, many owners find that their company has suddenly become a white elephant that nobody wants.

One Possible Solution Groom your own replacement, someone who will buy your company when you’re ready to retire. Maybe this person is a current co-owner (but be careful if he or she is about the same age as you, who will be counting on retiring around the same time.) Or it could be a son or daughter active in the business, or a younger key employee.

Business Owners Who Successfully Groom Their Own Replacements Leave Nothing to Chance They realize that there is no room for error at the point of retirement. Here are some examples of steps they might take: • They are cautious. They make sure their heir apparent is the right person in terms of temperament, personality, competence and personal goals. • They set up a probation period so they can terminate the relationship if they find this person simply will not work out. During that period, they keep everything informal, strictly verbal. At the same time, even when they go to a formal agreement, they make sure it contains a termination provision. • They fashion golden handcuffs and incentives to ensure that their replacement stays until the baton is passed. An ambitious successor needs and deserves gradually increasing authority and benefits. Options include deferred compensation or the opportunity to acquire partial ownership prior to their retirement. This provides both parties with something to win by sticking to the agreement… and something to lose if it falls apart. • They put it in writing, along with the help of their attorney—locking in who does and gets what, and spelling out all details and caveats, including how to establish the final valuation of the business. This formal buy/sell agreement protects everybody. • They build in a funding mechanism. This is crucial. No matter how good the terms of the buy/sell agreement, it will be worthless if the money is not there when needed to carry out the plan. Under one option, the successor may be able to purchase the company from ongoing profits. Other options include setting up a sinking fund or allowing the successor to simply borrow the money. These options may work but they leave much to chance. Instead, consider a funding vehicle that protects your family in the event of your disability or premature death, such as life and disability income insurance.* • They have a back-up plan. As a business owner, you know that very few things go exactly as planned. What if your business hits tough times or your successor dies, becomes disabled, or—all to common—leaves because of a personality conflict? Or what if there simply is no heir apparent waiting in the wings? Sometimes, it’s simply best to dismantle the business. Whether or not you have a possible successor for your company, you should begin mapping out your retirement strategy today. Your insurance professional or your independent professional advisors can help you develop this kind of business strategy. INCOME FOR LIFE Phelps Memorial Hospital Center Earns Third “Gold Plus” Award Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, for the third year in a row, has been awarded the "Gold Plus" Performance Achievement Award for outstanding stroke care. The award recognizes the hospital's success in providing a high level of stroke care by ensuring that patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. To earn the award, a hospital must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Performance Achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With the GuidelinesStroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care. These measures include aggressive use of medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation, all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients. "With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Performance Achievement Award demonstrates Phelps' commitment to being one of the top hospitals in the country for providing aggressive, proven stroke care," said Dr. Sanda Carniciu, Physician Director of the Stroke Center at Phelps. "We will continue to focus on providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols." According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every three minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Eighty percent of strokes are preventable, but only 26 percent of the general public can name one or more of the warning signs. In order to help raise awareness of stroke symptoms, Phelps conducts a health fair every year for students at Sleepy Hollow High School. Both students and faculty are educated as to what to look for. Known as Act FAST, Facial droop, Arms drift (diminishing strength), Slurred speech, Time to call 911, or Trouble with understanding, seeing, walking, swallowing or talking. Why students? Because stroke can occur in young people. Also, young people who spends time with elderly grandparents or volunteer with senior citizens should be aware of the signs of stroke - they could save a life.

upcoming events Volunteers to be honored at HIV/AIDS Gala ARCS recently announced that it will honor two volunteers at its annual Harvest of Hope Charity Ball on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Whitby Castle in Rye. Alan Shapiro, a lawyer with Philips Nizer, has volunteered for the HIV/AIDS service organization for over ten years. The second honoree, Carla Ramos, is a Poughkeepsie hairstylist who created a new, highly successful fundraiser for ARCS. ARCS hands out two Hearts for ARCS awards at is annual gala, which also features a three-course gourmet dinner, an extensive silent auction, a live “bachelor” auction, live music and dancing. Alan Shapiro, a resident of Pleasantville, was selected as one of this year’s honorees for his long-term commitment to ARCS’ food and nutrition programs. “Alan is the first person we call when we have a specific need in our emergency food closet,” said Meredith Morabito, Nutrition Services Coordinator at ARCS. “As a coordinator for the Interfaith Coalition, he sets up food drives throughout the year to replenish our pantries.” Shapiro recently conducted a food drive at the Woodlands Community Temple which netted over 160 boxes of nonperishable food for ARCS’ Westchester pantry. He has been a partner at Philips Nizer LLC in Manhattan for over twenty years and practices corporate and business law when not volunteering for his community. Shapiro also volunteers for Midnight Run and Hope’s Door. Carla Ramos was another obvious choice to receive a 2012 Hearts for ARCS Award. She created the Hairdressers’ Disco Ball and Fantasy Hair Show in 2011 to unite her passions for music, the beauty industry and assisting those living with HIV/AIDS. The event grew in 2012 with over 600 attendees at the sold-out hair runway show at Shadows in Poughkeepsie on September 9th. “Carla had never organized a fundraiser before but she came to us with the idea, the contacts, and endless energy to make it happen,” said J. Dewey, ARCS’ Director of Public Relations & Resource Enhancement.

“Most importantly, her enthusiasm and determination have connected us with hundreds of new donors and supporters. You can’t put a value on that.” Ramos is a resident of Poughkeepsie and has been a stylist for more than thirty years. “It’s hard to believe she’s a grandmother,” said Dewey, “and she divides her time between family, work and volunteering here. It’s inspiring.”

The Harvest of Hope Charity Ball begins at 7:00 pm with a cocktail hour with open bar, live music by Jason Gisser, and a special surprise hostess. The silent auction includes a Holland America cruise, a stay on Antigua, theater tickets, gift baskets, stays on Cape Cod, Disney passes, fine art by Tarryl Gabel, and more. The evening concludes with dancing to DJ music by Superior Sounds and a dessert buffet featuring wine ice creams donated by the Beacon Creamery.

Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased at www.arcs.org or by calling (914) 785-8283. ARCS’ Harvest of Hope Charity Ball is sponsored by Philips Nizer, Healthcare News, FW Interiors Design, Superior Sounds, Big Girl Baking, Sweets Addiction, the Beacon Creamery, Hyatt House, Todd Michael Thomas Photography and B Lounge.

Before you start cooking this Thanksgiving, start off in a safer, healthier direction by being mindful of a few food safety tips. Knowing how to best prepare your food will help ensure safe preparation and a healthy dinner for you and your family. Look for mark of inspection on pre-stuffed turkeys – The USDA recommends only purchasing frozen pre-stuffed turkeys that have a USDA or state inspection mark. These turkeys are safe because they have been processed under controlled conditions. Do not thaw pre-stuffed turkeys before cooking. They should be cooked from the frozen state with careful consideration to follow the package directions for proper handling and cooking.

Thaw safely – There are three ways to safely thaw your turkey; 1. in the refrigerator at 41°F or below, 2. in cold water, or 3. in the microwave oven. The turkey should be cooked immediately after thawing. For thawing under refrigeration, allow an additional 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds your turkey weighs. Do not thaw on the counter. Thawing at room temperature increases the risk of bacteria growth. Clean hands and surfaces – Wash hands with soap and warm, running water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw poultry. Wash utensils, cutting boards, and thermometers between uses. Sanitize all countertops and cutting boards using a solution of 1 tablespoon unscented chlorine bleach per gallon of water between raw and ready to eat foods.

Separate raw poultry from ready to eat food – Keep raw poultry and its juices away from ready to eat foods. If possible, use separate cutting boards and utensils for

fresh produce and raw poultry to eliminate the potential for cross-contamination. Cross-contamination occurs when bacteria are spread from one food product to another.

Cook turkey and stuffing to proper temperatures – A cooked whole turkey is safe at a minimum internal temperature of 165°F throughout the turkey and stuffing. Keep a food thermometer handy to ensure proper temperatures are achieved. The internal temperature should be checked in the innermost part of the thigh, wing, the thickest part of the breast and the stuffing with your thermometer. Holding the turkey at safety temperatures prior to serving – Insert a cooking or meat thermometer inside the inner thigh area of the breast of the turkey and lower oven temperature. Make sure that the temperature of the turkey does not drop below 140°F during holding time. It is recommended that the turkey remain covered during holding time so it does not dry out. Refrigerate leftovers – Divide leftovers into smaller portions in shallow containers to cool quickly in the refrigerator. Store leftovers in the refrigerator at 41°F or lower for up to 3 to 4 days for turkey, stuffing and gravy. Recommended safe cooling procedures are to cool first from 135°F to 70°F within 2 hours and then from 70°F to 41°F in an additional 4 hours for a maximum cooling time of six hours.

Fixed Indexed Annuities What is a Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA)? A Fixed Indexed Annuity is a guaranteed insurance product just like a regular fixed annuity, except in one area. Aside from the minimum guaranteed interest that is built into the contract, there is also the ability to participate in real market growth with no risk to principal. In addition, there are no sales charges or management fees to be paid. It is a very suitable alternative for investors who are risk adverse and cannot suffer any negative returns. Most products offer a premium bonus upon deposit which can guarantee a 4.0% to 5.0% yield in the first year1. In this current interest rate environment, many people feel that is a very good ROR for the next 12 months. Here is briefly how they work. The annuity is indexed which means it offers indexed interest crediting options on various stock & bond indices. The indexed interest crediting options will earn interest that depends on how a market index performs annually. The annuity does not participate directly in any stock, bond or equity investments. The client is not buying shares of stock or an index; they are participating via proxy with the carrier. When the indices increase, clients earn interest subject to a cap. On the anniversary, gains are credited to the contract and the indices are reset for the next year. If there are negative returns, then the client loses nothing and keeps all past bonuses and prior years’ earnings. In this historically low interest rate environment, clients may want to reconsider where they decide to park their hard earned cash for the long haul. Certificates of deposit, savings accounts and money markets are not going to be paying competitive interest any time soon. Ten year CD’s are only paying 1.25% taxable2…! The stock market, although approaching historical levels in 2012, is still viewed by many seniors as a bubble just waiting to burst and too risky. Volatility and potential losses is just not an option for many folks. So where can you position some of your money and earn superior returns without worrying about losing any of it? Fixed Indexed Annuities offer real double-digit returns without any risk to your principal by design. Fixed Indexed Annuities offer clients the following benefits: 123456789101112-

100% Principal Guarantee 100% Guaranteed Fixed Interest Rate Option 100% Participation in the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100 Indices No Sales Charges or Asset Fees Access to 10% of your principal annually (more than any bank CD offers) Annual interest credit resets into principal on every contract anniversary No Taxes are due until distributions are taken Loans available up to $50,000 in non-qualified accounts Death Benefits bypasses probate Premium Bonuses available Income options you cannot outlive A+ rated life insurance companies3

Many of our clients have earned in excess of 10% annually4. That is not to say that in some years clients will earn less or even zero interest, but they will never lose money5. The reality is that these contracts only increase in value because of the tremendous guarantees provided therein. There is no other product that we are aware of that can offer returns like this with no market risk. For more information about Fixed Indexed Annuities, please call Andrew J. Wall of Heroes unveiled by local hospital

This year’s Heroes at Hudson Valley Hospital Center from left to right: Front row: Charles Cannato, Ruel Wilson, Kathleen Calabro. Back row: Jane Picone, Laura O’Grady, Anna Slempa, Valerie Falls, Ann Marie Guthartz, Elizabeth Dwyer and Cathy Patinella.

Being a hero means being in the right place at the right time to help others when they need it. Sometimes it doesn’t even involve a rescue from a burning building or a lifesaving operation. Hudson Valley Hospital Center recognizes these everyday heroes – from the environmental staff to the lab technician – each year by unveiling their portraits as part of its Wall of Heroes. HVHC recently unveiled its Wall of Heroes at a ceremony in the lobby of the Hospital in Cortlandt Manor. This year, 10 employees from 10 departments were honored. Employees live in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. Each month the Hospital recognizes an employee who has been nominated by co-workers. At the end of the year, that employee is honored at the Heroes Ceremony and their portrait hung on the wall along the front corridor of the Hospital, where it remains for the year. It’s one of the reasons that the Hospital has been cited - by Press Ganey and Westchester Magazine as one of the top places to work in Westchester, and the nation, alongside corporate giants like MasterCard, New York Life and Morgan Stanley. “It’s really a very impressive sight, and the ceremony is very moving,’’ said Hudson Valley Hospital President John C. Federspiel. “When you walk down the corridor and see these 3-foot high portraits on the wall, it really makes a statement about how we feel about our employees. It’s something they and their families can be proud of, not just for one day, but for the entire year. That benefits everyone: the employees, the patients and the community.’’

Honored this year were: Jane Picone, Phelbotomist, Lab – Jane of Peekskill was Employee of the Month in October 2011. She is a member of the Phlebotomy team and painlessly draws blood from patients. She works the 3- 11 p.m. shift in the lab and is frequently requested by patients because of her top-notch skills. Charles Cannato, Technologist, Radiology – Charles of Mount Kisco was Employee of the Month in November 2011. A 9-year employee of HVHC, he works as a technologist in the Radiology Department scanning patients in the MRI units. He takes the time to chat with each patient and helps to calm their nerves. Laura O’Grady, RN, Emergency Department – Laura of Lake Peekskill was Employee of the Month in December 2011. A 21-year employee, she works as an RN in the Emergency Department wearing many hats, including charge nurse, bedside nurse, teacher, triage and ACLS instructor. Laura is the “rock” of the Emergency Department and is there to advise and assist her co-workers. She’s also known for her “killer” Irish soda bread. Anna Slempa, RN, BSN – Anna of Peekskill was Employee of the Month in January 2012. Anna, Clinical Coordinator in Nursing Administration, has worked at HVHC for 33 years, starting as a candy striper many years ago. During her tenure at HVHC, she has worked on several nursing units including 3 East, ICU and the Emergency Department. She has been recognized in Hudson Valley Magazine for her nursing excellence. continued on next page

Healthcare News - Westchester

What do doctors do to treat their own pain? As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
