After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 1241 Mamaroneck Ave. right here in White Plains, NY who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

Jackie’s doing it... and you can do it too! Jackie Stahl used to always struggle with her weight. As a teenager, she tried a number of weight loss programs and even joined a couple of local gyms. However, despite some initial success, the 34-year-old's yo-yo dieting and exercise regime didn't work. Usually, she put the weight back on, which left her frustrated - desperately looking for another alternative. About a year ago, Stahl's mother saw an advertisement for a weight loss team challenge at Will2Lose in Scarsdale. Will2Lose is a fitness club that focuses on changing one's eating and lifestyle habits, providing members with a great workout experience geared toward their needs. The challenge was similar to NBC's "The Biggest Loser," a reality show that features obese people competing to win a cash prize by losing the most amount of weight possible. Well, meet Will2Lose’s winner in its own “Biggest Loser” competition: Jackie Stahl. Since joining Will2Lose, Stahl of Yonkers has lost about 110 pounds. "I was really embarrassed by what I had become and where I was at," Stahl said. Will2Lose owner Vito DiMatteo and Stahl's personal trainer at the facility helped dispel any negative preconceived notions she might have had going into the program. She admits now that their support has helped her remain atWill2Lose. As a result, she's become a strong advocate of its unique approach. “I’m extremely proud of Jackie,“ DiMatteo said. “She is definitely one of our best success stories. She used to be very quiet and self-conscious. But Jackie has come a long way. She is now the life of the party. When she walks in, she lights up the room.” DiMatteo and his staff of 15 trainers and three nutritionists preach adapting a healthier
The fitness instructors atWill2Lose are veterans of the industry and understand that not everyone is at the same fitness level. "This is a place where people feel they belong," DiMatteo said. "They're comfortable here because they're around people who share the same goals as they do." It was the Weight Loss Team Challenge and subsequent challenges that got Stahl really interested in the program. The challenges consist of small groups of approximately six people together with a coach or mentor who oversee the twice-weekly fitness activities. They include a series of high interval training exercise sessions that last between eight and 12 weeks. While Stahl, a special education teacher in the Bronx, currently exercises every day, both on her own and at the Will2Lose facilities, she never misses an opportunity to work out with her team mates. "My trainer Chris really kicks our butts," she jokes, "but more importantly, it keeps us all accountable." Stahl, who is eager to become a mentor to new Will2Lose members, admits she has run up against several roadblocks on her weight loss journey, admitting the weight has not come off easily. In the past, if she had lost 10 and gained back five additional pounds, Stahl would have been upset. But since joiningWill2Lose, she has somehow managed to keep coming back.
lifestyle, one that includes positive changes to eating habits. He favors whole foods and a low glycemic food plan, a strategy that helps increase the feeling of fullness for longer periods. That includes lots of fruits, vegetables and nomads-produced food. With DiMatteo's help and by conducting research and choosing healthy recipes, Stahl has learned to recreate her daily diet. Apart from the healthy diet plan, DiMatteo believes exercise is
important to the success of his clients and Will2Lose offers practical options for its members. With approximately 45 classes to choose from, including ballet core, cardio sculpt, kickboxing, Pilates mat exercises, studio cycling, step and strength, TRXtraining and Zumba, as well as small group programs, members are under no pressure to take a specific class. In fact, they are encouraged to take the classes they are most capable of doing.

INTRODUCTION Snoring and Sleep Apnea are common conditions in our society today. They are caused by a narrowing or collapse of the airway during sleep. Snoring or sleep apnea appliances are devices that are worn in the mouth during sleep that are designed to reposition the lower jaw so that the airway is supported in such a way that air can flow more freely. This reduces or eliminates snoring and can treat your sleep apnea, which can lead to a more quiet, restful night’s sleep. CAUSES OF SNORING 70-90 million people are affected by snoring. Snoring can occur when the airway becomes partially blocked during sleep. This may occur more frequently when: ❖ You sleep on your back ❖ You are overweight ❖ You have a large neck size ❖ The tongue falls back into the throat ❖ The tonsils and/or adenoids are large ❖ You mouth breathe during sleep ❖ You are overly tired ❖ You eat or drink alcohol too late at night ❖ You have a cold or are congested Snoring becomes more common: ❖ As we get older ❖ If you are a male ❖ After menopause ❖ If you have a small airway (may be genetic)

ASK AN EXPERT Shouldn’t you have the best dental care? By Edward Feinberg DMD No human being should ever have to go through the anguish of not being able to smile or eat comfortably. Teeth are critically important for optimal health and well-being. Without a good set of teeth, chewing is difficult or painful, so foods required for proper nutrition are commonly avoided. This affects the health of the entire body! What’s more, unhealthy teeth and gums open the door for bacteria in the mouth to easily enter the blood stream and wreak havoc. A person’s smile also affects overall health. People who don’t smile project a poor self-image and often lose confidence in themselves and their ability to socially interact with others. This negative psychology can adversely impact general health, personal relationships and job opportunities. A nice smile is an important ingredient for success and selfesteem—every bit as important as an expensive suit or a fancy car. A nice smile communicates confidence, attractiveness and friendliness.
Figure 1
According to the ADA, 40% of adults avoid seeking dental care. About 24.7% feel that visiting a dentist is not necessary until a problem occurs. The ADA estimates that 34.5% are afraid of the cost of dental care and 17% are afraid of the uncertainty of what care
they might need. Approximately 26.3% have had a bad experience with the dentist and at least 21% avoid the dentist because they are afraid of pain. [American Dental Association 2008; “Key Dental Facts] Fearful people often avoid pain by neglecting their mouths, even though their neglect is likely to result in a painful and traumatic experiences later on. But fears can be erased with tender loving care, and deepseated phobias can be exorcised before any dental treatment is even considered. Dental care need not ever be painful or unpleasant. In these economic times, people are understandably worried about costs. They don't realize how much it will cost them in the future to save a few dollars today--not just in their pocket books but in suffering and embarrassment as well. One of the few pleasures in later years is the ability to eat properly and with confidence. People often fail to appreciate that emergency care and "patch-ups" can wind up costing more in the long run. Prevention is always the key to lifelong health. Mr. H. knows he received the best bargain when he restored his mouth in 1986. He has only needed routine care since then and he enjoys his food heartily and smiles with confidence. His upper arch was restored without implants, even though he only has 7 teeth. He benefited from an approach to dentistry that has a 70 year track record of success that is not taught in dental schools. Most crown and bridgework is not made with the care and precision that went into his dentistry. Sometimes it is made in only two visits. It is not uncommon for dentistry to require replacement in as few as five years after such treatment.
Unfortunately, patients cannot realize the true value of their dentistry until several years after its completion. It is a mistake to believe that all crown and bridgework is the same and can be compared by price—a common practice in tough economic times. People who make this mistake—as Oscar Wilde remarked in
Figure 2
The Picture of Dorian Gray, often "know the price of everything and the value of nothing." Price-shoppers fail to consider what the ultimate cost will be if their restorations require replacement every five years. Mrs. H.'s dental costs would have been nearly 8 times higher! The best care is always the cheapest in the long run. Dentistry is expensive by necessity. The fees have to support a team of people with salaries and benefits, and some of the team members, such as laboratory technicians, are not even seen by the patient. The fees also have to support the infrastructure associated with running a dental office (which is really a "minihospital")--expensive equipment, a myriad of supplies (including precious metals), taxes and insurance. Most patients do not realize that it costs at least $300 per hour to run a dental office without any profit.
When fees are lowered below realistic levels, the difference must be made up in several ways. First, costs can be lowered by using low cost supplies and inferior materials. Expenses can also be lowered by using low cost laboratory services outsourced to China or the Philippines. Patients usually have no idea how their dentistry is actually fabricated--what materials are being used and who is making them. Lastly, some practitioners make up for low fees by seeing a higher volume of patients. Increasing the volume of patients means less time spent with patients. Quality has to go out the window! Mr. H. knows the real value of his dentistry: it is priceless. The care and quality that went into making his dentistry has given him a lifetime of oral health, comfort, the ability to smile with confidence and the pleasure of being able to eat everything. Shouldn't you have the same? Modern dentistry can perform miracles for you that were not possible a hundred years ago. Proper dental care can provide you with improved health, optimal function, and enhanced appearance; but it is up to you to make the most of your opportunity to learn how. You deserve to know as much as possible about your dental health, so that you can make intelligent decisions based on fact instead of having decisions occur through default. “Good doctoring” concludes Dr. Atul Gawande in his book Better, “is all about making the most of the hand that you’re dealt”.

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid. Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.
Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will? If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate. Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).
My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do? Your concerns are certainly daunting, and heart-rending. Our firm offers you a caring hand, an open ear, and uncompromising professional competence, and commitment. We will help find for you solutions that best suit your needs, using the latest tax, trust, and other asset protection strategies available under the law. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. practices in all aspects of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. It’s not clear why there was a link between having migraines with aura and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. It's possible that common factors may be involved in both migraines and cardiovascular.

“It’s certainly possible that the same factor that's causing the initial constriction in migraines with aura is causing the constriction of blood vessels in the heart,” which leads to a heart attack, said Kornel, who was not involved in the study.
Kornel said there's still a lot to explore with this topic, including future studies that take into account whether women are taking migraine medication — a factor that could influence the link.

Women whose migraine headaches are accompanied by flashes of light or other changes in vision, called aura, may be at increased risk for a heart attack, a new study suggests. A study showed that for women who said they experienced migraines with aura, the rate of heart attack and stroke was higher than the rate of these cardiac events in the overall study population. In fact, the study indicated that after high blood pressure, migraine with aura was the second strongest contributor to the risk of heart attack and stroke — ahead of Type 2 diabetes, smoking and obesity. Migraines with aura occur when a blood vessels in the brain constrict, reducing blood flow to a certain area, said Dr. Ezriel R. Kornel, a neurologist at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, NY. When the blood vessels subsequently dilate, or enlarge to increase blood flow, this leads to pain, Kornel said.

Is Laser Hair Removal permanent or should I consider Electrolysis for permanent results? Laser Hair Removal and Electrolysis and their ability to remove unwanted hair permanently is often misleading. In many case both treatments are necessary and others will benefit solely from one or the other. Many believe there is no need for Electrolysis when Laser Hair Removal is available. This is incorrect and in some cases can lead to much more unwanted hair. If Laser Hair Removal is used on the face, chin or lip of women where all the hair is not actively growing it will cause additional hair to begin growing. The laser targets color and is much less effective on blonde, gray, white and fine hair. Women with dark skin are also difficult to treat as the laser cannot distinguish between the color of the hair and the color of the skin. Laser Hair Removal works best on light skin with dark hair and areas with full hair growth such as under arms, legs and in the bikini area where all the hair is actively growing.
Men, with full back hair, are good candidates for Laser Hair Removal as every follicle has a thick dark hair for the laser to find. What is an active hair and why can't I treat all areas with laser? Vellus hair, is the superficial hair that covers mostly all of our body. This hair is difficult to see but exists on the surface of our skin. Mostly every square inch of skin has 6,000 hair follicles, much of which are Vellus hairs. Vellus hair is considered inactive. Hair that we shave, wax or tweeze regularly is called Terminal Hair and is considered active hair and is easy to see and feel and is much darker than Vellus hair. It is necessary to shave the area completely before a Laser Hair Removal treatment. The tiny inactive Vellus hairs will be shaved and treated along with the thicker
hairs during a Laser Hair Removal treatment. These fine hairs will grow back and over time will become active. For example; if you have ten hairs on you lip and you want them removed by Laser, the Vellus hairs that surround the thicker darker hairs will also be treated and will grow back unaffected by the laser but now much more noticeable. Over time this will greatly increase the amount of unwanted hair which can be devastating. Electrolysis will target the thick dark Terminal hairs without touching the tiny, almost non visible, Vellus hairs. By doing so only the individual, unwanted hairs are treated with Electrolysis and guaranteed to be permanently be removed without causing any additional hair growth. Electrolysis is also suggested for use after completed Laser Treatments for any stray unwanted hairs that grow back over time. continued on next page

For many price is an issue when it comes to treatment. The cost of laser verses Electrolysis over time is similar. Laser is much quicker and requires less treatments but the cost is paid for up front and requires 5 or more treatments. Electrolysis is much more affordable and may take several months of weekly appointments. Small isolated areas of unwanted hair especially on the face require Electrolysis. The underarms, bikini and legs have complete active follicles and laser is preferred in these areas. Almost all women have unwanted hair growth on their face and Electrolysis will immediately correct and permanently remove these hairs. There is absolutely no reason to shave or wax the face. It is unacceptable to encourage the use of wax on the chin or lip as the condition will continually worsen. However you can get off this rollercoaster and have Electrolysis or in larger areas, laser and never have to worry about unwanted hair again.
Electrolysis is the treatment for targeted hair removal and should be offered for this type of Permanent Hair Removal. If a Laser Hair Removal center does not offer Electrolysis and suggests laser where all the hair is not active, you will experience an undesirable outcome. Electrolysis and Laser Hair Removal provides the perfect solution for all areas in need of Permanent hair removal. Offering both treatments guarantees a successful outcome. At Pretty Face Medi Spa in Montrose, Westchester County, we have been offering Electrolysis for over ten years. Jackal’s Fitness: Helping Ourselves and Our Kids As a former U. S. Navy Lieutenant, I never imagined finding myself in a situation where I would be told that I was overweight, let alone obese. Yet shortly after my 36th birthday in February 2012, there I was listening to my doctor tell me that I was about 50 pounds overweight. Even worse than that news, was listening to the long list of possible medical issues (e.g. heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and cancer) I could face if I didn’t take immediate action. I couldn’t understand how I got to this point. Even after I left the Navy, I exercised frequently and participated in events such as half-marathons, 10k’s and a triathlon. I pleaded to my doctor that I was physically active and had no idea how I gained so much weight over the years. His simple reply of, “You eat too much”, immediately made me realize that I had never paid attention to proper nutrition. The philosophy of that as long as I exercised, I could eat what I wanted worked for me when I was in my 20’s. However, the combination of getting older and switching to a career that involves sitting behind a desk all day tossed that idea out of the window. I was so shaken up by my doctor’s warnings that I decided to make changes the moment I left his office.
The first decision I made was to set goals for myself. Diets where people’s weight goes down and up repeatedly are commonly known as “Yo-Yo” diets. I wanted to avoid going through that type of situation so my goal was to get down to and stay at my college senior weight. Specifically, my goal was to go from 207 pounds to 147 pounds. Here we are just over a year later and I am down 46 pounds and am working on closing in on my goal. I saw my doctor a few weeks ago and he said that not only was my weight down to a safe level, but my blood work had improved to the point where his only prescription was to keep doing what I was doing. People have asked me what I had done to lose all that weight and my answer is “Eating right and exercising smartly.” While it may seem like a simple answer, a look into what I did to achieve these results will show that my approach really was that simple. After setting my goals, I told myself that everything I had done prior didn’t work and I needed to forget everything I had learned and open myself to new ideas. One of the common pitfalls of trying to lose weight is jumping on the latest fad diet or workout plan. Another pitfall is the
belief that a magic pill or food will immediately get you to your goals. I wanted to avoid those paths, so I enrolled in a nutrition certification class and was more than pleased that I did. Besides providing me with a scientific understanding of what our body does with food and teaching me how to develop a nutrition and calorie plan that maximized my results, the course helped dispel many of the misconceptions I had about nutrition. As I incorporated the concepts I learned into a nutrition plan for myself, I finally began to see the results I had been unable to achieve for many years. As much as I love exercise, in my opinion, the key driver for the changes I saw was developing a healthy nutrition plan. Now that I was starting to see results, I wanted to enhance them by participating in an exercise plan that let me do so. As part of my attempt to open myself to the ideas of others, I gave up my old workout plan in lieu of a home workout program that lasted 90 days. I had previously tried this program and am certain that I did not see the results I wanted because of my nutrition habits at the time. This time around, the results were better than I expected. After completing this program, I tried several others just to see if I could
continue the progress I had made. While these programs each had different approaches (high intensity vs. low intensity), I lost weight on all of them. Because of the results I was seeing, I wanted to learn more about the science of exercise, so I enrolled in a certification course. Similar to the nutrition course, I learned a great deal about the science behind effective exercise as well as how to develop a workout program for people based not only on their goals, but also on their current health status. I have personally seen people try a one size fits all approach to exercise and end up with injuries or the worsening of a condition. I was excited to have found a program that was based on developing a customized plan. When I think back to that day at my doctor’s office, becoming a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutrition Specialist never crossed my mind, but obtaining these certifications were a natural progression of my quest to learn as much as I could about exercise and nutrition. While I believe you can never learn enough, I felt I had reached a point where it was time to share what I had learned with others. continued on next page

Little did I know that when I was being warned by my doctor a year ago, I was a statistic. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, almost 2/3 of all U.S. adults are overweight and about 1/3 of all U.S. adults are obese. In a time where healthcare costs are a hot topic, many adults are not doing themselves any favors by maintaining an unhealthy weight. According to a 2009 Health Affairs article, in 2008, obese people spent nearly an average of $1,500 more on healthcare than people who were at normal weights did. Not only are U.S. adults paying for their weight with their health, but they are also paying for it with their money. As bad as the statistics for adults are, the numbers for children are just as frightening. Nearly 17% of all children in the United States are obese and as a result the number of children experiencing chronic diseases is growing rapidly. According to the American Heart Association, the current generation of children is projected to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents, a situation that has never oc-
curred as long as life expectancy has been tracked. In just about every article I have read, two factors always consistently came up as causes for obesity. These two factors were lack of physical activity and poor nutritional habits. As a youth sports coach and former service member, I felt as if I had a duty to help stem the tide of this national epidemic. Over the last few months, I have reached out to several organizations to not only try to get the word about childhood obesity out but to also develop a plan to help others take steps toward a healthy lifestyle. Initially I hit a few brick walls, but as I persevered, I was fortunate to find others who shared these goals and also wanted to help out. Some of these organizations include: Buchanan Verplanck Elementary School, the Hendrick Hudson School District Wellness Committee, the Village of Buchanan, the Westchester County Youth Services Bureau and the office of State Senator Greg Ball. I was recently nominated to serve on the County’s Youth Board and was also asked to teach a summer
camp youth sports class this coming summer. My goal is to use these forums to get the word out to kids about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and to show them ways on how to achieve one. While reaching out to the youth is important, I strongly believe that we as parents have to set an example for our children with regards to living a healthy lifestyle. As a result, I have created a company that will allow me to help families achieve these goals by using my training and experiences to provide customized personal training and nutrition consulting to those who also no longer want to be a statistic. Having once been in that position, I can relate to and have gone through many of the struggles involved with trying to lose weight. For those of you who are old enough to remember the commercial about the president of a company also being a client, so is the story for Jackal’s Fitness (s). I hope my story will inspire you to experience the same joys I have been fortunate enough to experience over the last year.

Hudson Valley Hospital Center is “Baby Friendly” Hudson Valley Hospital Center, already recognized for excellence in breastfeeding support, has added another major plus to its impressive credentials with its designation as a “Baby Friendly” Hospital. Baby Friendly USA, a leader in the movement to promote breast feeding and infant health, recently announced that Hudson Valley Hospital Center has become the 4th hospital in New York State and the only one in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland, to earn this coveted designation. The BabyFriendly Hospital Initiative, sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund, seeks to improve infant health by implementing a global best-practices program. Studies show that breastfeeding in infancy promotes good health throughout life. Baby-Friendly hospitals provide guidance in helping parents to make informed choices about how to feed and care for their babies. “Hudson Valley Hospital Center’s expertise with regard to breastfeeding initiatives, unique and ground breaking approaches to lactation, and commitment by medical staff and nursing staff were all well received by the surveyors during their visit here,’’ said John Federspiel, President of Hudson Valley Hospital Center. “I congratulate Sabrina NitkowskiKeever, Director of Maternal/Child Health, and Linda LeMon, Lactation Specialist, and the entire Department of Obstetrics staff for their extraordinary efforts.”

Nitkowski-Keever said that with the rise in childhood obesity it was more important than ever that healthy eating begin at birth. She said it was all part of a sea change that recognizes that proper nutrition is an integral part of staying healthy. Breastfeeding is known to fight disease, lower sick care visits and hospitalizations, and help develop strong bonds between mother and child. Evidence has demonstrated that breastfeeding also helps regulate respiration, temperature, glucose, and heart rates for babies, and helps speed childbirth recovery for moms as well as helping to fight obesity later in life. Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers uphold the WHO International Code of Marketing of BreastMilk Substitutes by offering education and educational materials that promote human milk rather than other infant food or drinks, and by refusing to accept or distribute free or subsidized supplies of breast milk substitutes, nipples, and other feeding devices. In addition to focusing on making breast-feeding a viable option for new mothers, Baby-Friendly care encourages mothers to be with their newborns 24 hours a day. This promotes bonding, enhances feeding and weight gain, and improves sleep for both mother and child.
To earn the Baby- Friendly designation, hospitals must follow a strict set of guidelines and requirements including: Completing a period of comprehensive training and preparation Providing new mothers with optimal care, information and instruction to successfully breastfeed or feed formula to their babies Undergoing a rigorous yearly BFHI review Hudson Valley Hospital Center has one of the top breastfeeding support programs in the state and was presented with an award of excellence by New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah in April 2011. HVHC is also the only Hospital and Birthing Center in Westchester and Putnam counties to be recognized for breastfeeding support by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. The Hospital has a breastfeeding support group that meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month and offers prenatal education classes, private consultations, telephone triage and a new class on what to expect for grandmothers.

family medicine After practicing family medicine for 20 years, Dr. Ira Sutton welcomed a new colleague, but a dear old friend to the practice: His wife, Marilyn. Now we’re really talking family medicine. The couple practices in Scarsdale, after working in New Rochelle for the last nine years. Ira Sutton has 29 years of his experience. Meanwhile, Marilyn, who entered medical school in her 40s, has practiced for almost a decade. “It’s very nice to come in with my wife to work every day,” said Ira Sutton, 60, whose practice is affiliated with Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle. “It’s great to make all kinds of decisions together. “I would like to stay in this practice for another 10 years with Marilyn. That would be great. I just don’t want to join another group.” The principle behind family medicine is all about the patient — you. With a family medicine practitioner on your side, you have a partner to guide you and help you manage your health. Family medicine practitioners develop personal relationships with their patients and build a history with you.
Not only are they a great resource for preventive care, but your relationship with them and their insight into your health history is crucial when irregular symptoms — physical or emotional — point to potential diseases and conditions. And in the cases when a specialist’s care is needed, your family medicine practitioner will serve as an advocate and coordinate your care with the specialist, helping you navigate new information and recommendations.
“I just love the idea of treating the whole patient,” Ira Sutton said. “You get to know them and their family. You are somebody who can coordinate their care without wasting so much time and money in the system. I just always felt family medicine was a good place for me.” Some U.S. medical schools are now creating programs that emphasize the importance of family medicine, encouraging students to collaborate more with nurses, pharmacists and specialists. Although, stereotypically, family medicine may not be as glamorous as
other medical specialties - here in Westchester County facilities are aware of its importance to the community. Family Medicine is the lynchpin in what is becoming an increasingly complex healthcare system. As opposed to a specialist in cardiology, who treats heart disease, or a gastroenterologist, who diagnoses and treats conditions of the digestive tract, a family physician treats the whole person in every stage of life. Family physicians are trained to take care of the entire family, dealing with issues that may affect more than one family member and creating long-term, personal relationships with their patients. The benefits of Family Medicine are numerous for the patient, the practitioner, and the community as a whole. Overall costs of healthcare are lowered as patients obtain preventive healthcare from their primary physician and consequently make less frequent visits to higher-cost specialists and emergency rooms. Patients receive a higher standard of care, with their family doctor managing chronic illnesses, coordinating care provided by subspecialists, and helping to change behaviors within the family that are having a negative impact on health. And Ira and Marilyn Sutton hope sure of that - together - for about another decade or so.

Do you have Group LTD…? By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC Group Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurance replaces a portion of your income when you are unable to work due to an illness or injury. Group LTD insurance is arguably the best insurance dollar you will ever spend. Why is it the best? This article will explain why after we review some cold, hard facts of life. You may not realize the potential danger of becoming disabled today, but they are daunting. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that you have a one in five chance of becoming disabled during your working years age 18-64. One in five… that my friends is not a good number. Moreover, the average long-term disability (LTD) absence from work lasts 2.5 years1. Quite a long time to survive without a steady income, wouldn’t you say…? Let’s go a step further. You would think that sub-prime mortgages are the leading cause of mortgage bankruptcies in this country, but they are not. According to an American Journal of Medicine 2009 study, disability continued to be the leading cause of bankruptcies and mortgage foreclosures in the United States, causing nearly 50% of all foreclosures compared to 2% from premature death. According to the same study, two-thirds of American families live paycheck-to-paycheck, and approximately 38% could not afford to pay their bills for more than three months without their income. Most people believe that their biggest asset is their house and/or retirement savings. In fact, their biggest asset is more than likely their ability to work and earn a living. Consider this example of a 28 year old earning $80,000 annually with a 3% increase in income each year. By the time that person reaches age 65, he or she would have earned $5,293,938. It is doubtful that any other assets that person has accumulated will approach that number. Technically, LTD picks up where Short-Term Disability (STD) leaves off. Once your STD benefits expire, generally after three to six months, the long-term disability policy pays you 60% of your earnings, depending on your policy. You will then receive benefits for two to five years or until you turn 65 depending upon your contract. If you pay your own premiums with after-tax dollars, your disability benefits will be tax-free. If your employer pays for the group policy, most likely with pre-tax dollars, your disability benefits will be taxable. Rather than purchasing a separate disability insurance policy, many people believe they can rely solely on Social Security and/or Workers Compensation for protection. Unfortunately, Workers Compensation will only cover a "job related" injury or illness and both Workers Compensation and Social Security benefits are inadequate for any successful professional. The average benefit paid by Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is $1,065 monthly; 8% of SSDI recipients received less than $500 monthly, 52% received less than $1,000 monthly and 97% received less than $2,000 monthly2. So what are some of the real advantages of Group LTD? ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢
Since the policy is sponsored by the employer, group rates apply. The cost is a fraction of individual coverage. Contracts are guaranteed issue up to a monthly benefit cap of $7,500 to $10,000 a month. No physicals, blood work or extensive medical questions are required. Most occupations have benefit periods to age 65. Many carriers will issue group contracts on as little as two full-time owners and/or employees. 36 month own occupation definition allows you to receive benefits while working in a different vocation. Partial disability benefits are payable to disabled employees who return to work part time. Premiums are waived the month following the date the benefit is paid until the employee returns to work3.
Consider this example: A 50 year old therapist earning $200,000 a year employs her 45 year old assistant who she pays $30,000 annually. The therapist can buy a $7,500 a month disability benefit to age 65 for herself and a $1,500 a month disability benefit to age 65 for her assistant all for only $225 a month…!4 That is over $1,600,000 of disability income protection from day one. So whether you own a small business or you are an employee of one, it makes sense to talk to the decision makers and review some LTD quotes immediately. Group LTD can only be purchased by the employer and it remains one of the most important benefits of every working man and woman today. Celebrating the opening of Phelps at Croton with a ribbon cutting recently are Michael Finkelstein, MD, internal medicine, Eliz Agopian, MD, neurologist, Andrew Merryman, Phelps Board chairman, Avraham Merav, MD, medical director of Phelps Thoracic Center, Leo Wiegman, Mayor of Croton-onHudson, Keith F. Safian, Phelps President & CEO, Michael Glennon, Phelps Administrative Director of Radiology and Physical Medicine, Maria Burgos, Croton practice secretary and Daniel Blum, Phelps Senior Vice President
Phelps at Croton, a new primary care and diagnostic radiology practice located in the ShopRite Plaza at 440 Riverside Avenue, is open and providing care to adult patients. The new office has been opened by Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, the full-service community hospital on Route 9 in Sleepy Hollow. At a recent ribbon-cutting event, Mayda Davis, Phelps Practice Administrator, gave Croton Mayor Leo Wiegman a tour of the facility. “Croton has had a very good working relationship with Phelps for a long time, especially in their support and technical assistance for our Emergency Medical Services for so many years, said Mayor Wiegman. “Opening this medical office right here in Croton shows how deeply committed Phelps is to our community. Phelps Senior Vice President Daniel Blum reports that the practice, which opened in October, started out busier than anticipated and many people are taking advantage of being able to just walk in and receive care without making an appointment. “Creating satellite primary care offices is a good way for the hospital to reach out into the communities we serve, Blum said.
“Judging from the response we have gotten, Croton residents appreciate having such convenient access to our services, which are backed up by hospital resources and facilities when needed. Primary Care Physicians at Phelps at Croton include Marco Zarlengo, MD, and Michael Finkelstein, MD, both internists, and Jane Connolly, FNP, a family nurse practitioner. Specialists practicing in Croton are Eliz Agopian, MD, neurologist; and James Hellerman, MD, endocrinologist, who are available by appointment. Phelps radiology services are also offered at the Croton site, where diagnostic Xray and ultrasound are available. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. Appointments may be made by calling 914-269-1700. Walk-ins are welcome to see the primary care physicians and for X-ray services. Appointments are needed for ultrasound. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center is a 238-bed community hospital with 450 medical staff, representing 50 clinical specialties. Phelps is the exclusive Westchester satellite for Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center and a member of the Stellaris Health Network. www.phelpshospital.org

Yonkers community rallies to support St. John’s expansion of its Emergency Department
Healthcare News - Westchester April, 2013
St. John’s Riverside Hospital recently announced that approximately 17,500 residents have signed letters or an online petition in support of restructuring and expanding the Emergency Department (ED) at St. John’s Andrus Pavilion in Yonkers. St. John’s has filed an application with the New York State Department of Health for $10 million in Vital Access Provider (VAP) Grant funds for this project. “Yonkers supports this project because they recognize that the current facility doesn’t meet the community’s needs and they know they deserve best in class Emergency Services,” said Ronald J. Corti, President & CEO of St. John’s Riverside Hospital. “St. John’s current emer-
gency department is now treating 38,600 ER visits annually and was only built to accommodate 25,000 a year. At this rate of growth, we project a need for the facility to handle 50,000 ER visits.” The plans include the restructuring and redesign of the emergency department that will help to optimize patient processing and improve efficiency. A larger integrated ED design will also improve the quality of care and patient experience and will be accomplished through patient-centered treatment areas, observation bays and separate patient and ambulance entrances. Furthermore the funds will be used to include on-site diagnostic imaging capability, a geriatric area and urgent care center.
Page 23
“Clearly, Yonkers needs this expansion and modernization of emergency room capacity. The St. John’s health network plays a vital role in the health of Yonkers residents as well as the economic well-being of the City of Yonkers,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Not only does St. John’s employ nearly 2,500 people in health and health related occupations, it is the largest private employer in the City and as such contributes greatly to the fiscal health of the third largest City in NY State. Also a project of this magnitude will bring construction and other new health related jobs to our city, ensuring a prosperous Yonkers.” To learn more or send a letter of support to Governor Cuomo, go to RiversideHealth.org.

Blythedale Children’s Hospital is proud to announce that it has received a $5,000 Quality of Life grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. The award was one of 76 grants totaling almost $427,000 awarded by the Reeve Foundation to nonprofit organizations nationwide. The Reeve Foundation provide opportunities, access, and improved quality of life for individuals living with paralysis, their families, and caregivers. Created by the late Dana Reeve, the program has awarded 2,131 grants totaling over $16 million since 1999. Blythedale Children’s Hospital will use the grant to purchase a SMART Table for the Hospital’s Early Childhood Center, which serves preschoolers with special medical needs. This high-tech, collaborative learning center features a large LCD display and encourages interaction with more than 1,500 downloadable activities and applications. Designed to accommodate children in a wheelchair or who may require other medical equipment, the SMART Table is ideal for those with limited motor skills or impaired mobility. "We are very grateful to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for funding this important piece of equipment,” said Blythedale President and CEO Larry Levine. "This gift truly speaks to their mission of provid-
ing an improved quality of life for people living with paralysis. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing a child with impaired mobility have an opportunity to interact and participate with his or her more able-bodied peers. This gift will touch many lives.” "The Reeve Foundation’s Quality of Life Grants Program has always been a cornerstone of one of our core beliefs, the power of we. By supporting organizations, like Blythedale, that align with the same beliefs as ours, we are better able to help our community members live more independently,” said Peter T. Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. "We are pleased to reward a number of tremendous organizations for their efforts.” The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Quality of Life grants program was conceived by the late Dana Reeve to address the myriad needs of children and adults with paralysis and other mobility impairments and their families. Grants support critical life-enhancing and life-changing initiatives that improve physical and emotional health and increase independence. Funded projects offer a diversity of services and approaches: improving access; providing education and job training; sponsoring organized sporting activities; and much more.

Healthcare News - Westchester
What do doctors do to treat their own pain? As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
