Healthcare News - Westchester

After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

Healing Power of Art and Community... Northern Westchester Hospital’s Pediatric Department has unveiled a new Family Room. This project, initiated and chaired by Christina Dochtermann, a loyal Hospital supporter since 2002, is being supported by The Junior League of Northern Westchester (JLNW), a long-standing partner of NWH. The new Family Room, to be used by pediatric patients and their families, will be refreshed with new furniture, television, touch wall, DVD player, bookcases/books, toys and art. An overarching goal of the project was to involve local children, educate families about the Hospital, and continue to nurture community connections. To help achieve this, the JLNW recruited the help of Fox Lane Middle School students. The students in Fox Lane Middle School's 6th grade art class "Drawing for Communication" have created works of art that communicate healing wishes. These 13 x 13 visual messages will become part of the family room decor. Additionally they will be incorporated into the design of the placemats used during meal time. Mrs. Dochtermann shared, “When our son was sick as a toddler he received such wonderful, healing care from the nurses and hospitalists at NWH that we had to find a way to give back and show our gratitude."

In 2003 Mrs. Dochtermann organized a renovation of the Pediatric Department and involved members of the Junior League and the community. A decade later, her commitment to NWH is as strong as ever. "Our family is delighted to be involved with the 2014 Pediatric Family Room project and thrilled to be collaborating with the JLNW." Mrs. Dochtermann is also a past President of and 18 year member of the JLNW. Art has long played a role in the healing process at Northern Westchester Hospital. In 2009, Vicki Aranow Feiner founded the Aranow Art Cart Program to lift patients’ spirits and allow their minds to expand outside of the hospital room. From a mobile art cart, patients can choose from colorful prints depicting scenes of travel, sports, nature and even pets, whatever is meaningful to them. The print will hang on the wall of their hospital room. Additionally, the halls at NWH are adorned with art through a partnership with the Katonah Art Museum; these beautiful displays are refreshed quarterly. In similar fashion, the art in the pediatric family room will be showcased for 6 months and then replaced by original works created by other children from local schools and community organizations. Next up, young artists from The Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester.

To keep the Pediatric Family Room filled with child-friendly fun, the Junior League is also sponsoring an on-going book, DVD and toy drive. If you’d like to donate new and unused items, or if your

group of budding artists would like to contribute to the wall art, please contact Christina Dochtermann at cdochtermann@houlihanlawrence.com or info@JLNW.org.

Healthcare news

It seems like just yesterday that we were all planning are summer-to-do lists, complete with vacations, barbecues, day trips and so many activities to do here in Westchester County and beyond. Chalk up another wonderful summer, filled with memories that will last a lifetime, moments that will always remain close to our hearts. But didn’t it go too fast? The summer is in its stretch run, believe it or not, it’s almost over. If you haven’t already, it’s time to prepare for Back To School shopping. And, remember, try to avoid the Woodbury Common outlet on weekends (just a helpful hint to help you out). But don’t panic! This is just a friendly reminder that August will quickly turn into September. You still have time to sit pool side with good friends, family and your favorite cold drink. Relax. Enjoy it. You will know when it’s time to get a move on: When the breeze at night becomes cooler, when it almost feels a little like the fall. Maybe the kids drove you a little crazy during the summer, but now you must send them back to school, which can be hard. No matter if you are preparing your first child for kindergarten, or sending your oldest off to college, make sure you take a good look at them. This is a special time. Don’t be nervous, they will be back, and so will summer. We hope you had a great summer and Healthcare News would like to wish you a wonderful school year! We always welcome telling these stories and please let us know if you have one for us. Thank you for reading. Look forward to hearing from you. Innovative Food Allergy Center for children and adults launches at Montefiore The Food Allergy Center at Montefiore Medical Center officially opened in Scarsdale and the Bronx to serve both adults and children who suffer from food allergies. This comprehensive program, which is part of the Division of Allergy and Immunology of the Department of Medicine at Montefiore, is comprised of a team of experts in pediatric and adult allergies, including the newly recruited center leader, Manish Ramesh, M.D., Ph.D. It will offer patients access to innovative testing and new approaches to food allergy treatment. Food allergies are a growing problem in this country, affecting nearly 15 million people, including 1 in 13 children. An allergic reaction can cause hives, wheezing, swelling of lips, mouth, eyes or tongue, difficulty breathing or even loss of consciousness and death. “Food allergies can be life threatening and our new one-stop center offers highly advanced testing breakthroughs to make the most accurate diagnosis possible for our patients,”

said David Rosenstreich, M.D., director, Division of Allergy and Immunology of the Department of Medicine at Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. “Our approach aims to use the latest in food allergy science and research to enhance the quality of our patients’ lives and impact their survival in the event of an allergic reaction.” Research shows eight foods account for 90 percent of all food allergy reactions. The most common foods people are allergic to include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (cashews, walnuts, almonds, pecans, and pistachios), wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. Physicians are able to diagnose food allergies using traditional skin prick or blood tests; however, more advanced testing is often needed to identify the trouble foods for some people. Traditional tests can identify most food allergies, but they sometimes result in false positives, which can cause nutritional, emo-

tional, social and financial problems for patients. Advanced testing offered at Montefiore’s Food Allergy Center, such as component tests and oral food challenges (OFC), helps reduce these false positives. The oral food challenge is a highly accurate diagnostic test that introduces certain foods and eliminates them. During this test, the allergist feeds the patient the suspected food in measured doses. Following each dose, the patient is observed for a period of time for any signs of a reaction. If there are no symptoms, he/she will gradually receive increasingly larger doses. If there are any signs of a reaction, the food challenge will be stopped. The Food Allergy Center is located at Montefiore Medical Specialists of Westchester, 495 Central Park Ave, Scarsdale, NY 10583 and at the Montefiore Medical Park, 1515 Blondell Ave., Bronx, NY. These five end of summer beauty tips will save you Your hair is parched from the chlorine, the result of sitting pool side for weeks in a row, and your skin is sun damaged. Welcome to the end of summer. Looks like you will need some beauty rehab to prepare you for the cold months ahead. However, don’t sit there in your flip flops fretting. With these five end of summer beauty tips, you’ll be revitalized faster than you think.

1. Is your make-up melting? Hot temps can cause concealer and foundation to be cakey. Lose that and use a BB cream instead, such as Maybelline New York Fresh BB Cream. Its special formula not only doesn’t melt and cake, but it gives the right amount of coverage, and evens out skin tones. 2. Suffering from a dry face? Sitting in the sun – for days on in – can dry out your skin. You shouldn’t use just any kind of moisturizer for your face for an end of summer rehab. It can break you out and in some cases make you even drier. Using a specific kind, such as Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream, which keeps your face glowing with Vitamin B and apple water extract. 3. How do you repair your “summer feet”? Wearing flip flops and sandals all summer can leave your feet callused and dry. Skip the salon and do some DIY pampering. Use a scrub such as Manicure/Pedicure by OPI Chamomile Mint Mask. Leave it on your heels for five minutes and wash it off in warm water. Voila! Soft feet in just minutes. It’s the perfect end of summer rehab solution. 4. What do to do with those dry nails? Your nails take a beating in the summer They can get dry, brittle and cracked. Using a nail cream like Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter cuticle cream, will cure all your nail issues By using natural ingredients you’ll see a difference in no time! 5. How to repair your hair? After overloading your hair with chlorine, heating tools, and too much sun, it will be begging for mercy. Using an anti freeze serum such as Dove’s Style + Care Nourishing Dry Ends Serum will not only de-frizz your hair, it will also make it look as good as new. Just put a few drops on the ends before styling or blow drying and you are back in the game.

Age is nothing but a number! As we age, normal changes occur such as slower metabolism and decreased muscle mass. But we've all seen people who appear and move years younger than they actually are. For example, your 91 year old neighbor who still works full time or perhaps the 80 year old marathon runner! There are many examples of individuals defying the aging processafter all age is nothing but a number. What Does Your Number Really Mean? Just celebrate your 75th but feel not a day past 50? Chances are your biological age is younger than your chronological age. The calendar tells you your chronological age- simply your age in years. Your biological age is your age at a cellular level and is influenced by genetics and lifestyle factors such as diet, social interactions, exercise, sleep, and stress. How you feel, physically function, and think are more accurate indicators of your aging process. Research has shown longevity and healthy living is attainable with good life choices and habits that incorporate the mind, body, and spirit. Staying active is essential to healthy aging, and regular exercise is a must! Not sure where to begin or how to exercise safely with a specific medical condition? A physical therapist (PT) can help. PTs are licensed practitioners with expertise in mobility, injury prevention, and chronic disease management. PTs can: • Perform comprehensive assessment of your strength, balance, flexibility, endurance, and overall mobility • Create a personalized exercise program catered to your unique health challenges and goals • Educate and instruct you on basic exercise principles and how to exercise safely and effectively.

Live, Laugh, and Move! If you have yet to find the Fountain of Youth, here are a few tips in the meantime to promote a longer and healthier life: • Laugh often. Enjoy life and spend time with those who make you happy. • Rest and rejuvenate. Take a nap. Get 7-8 hours of sleep daily. Take vacations. • Play it safe. Avoid unhealthy habits like smoking. Wear seat belts and helmets when advised. • Be proactive. Schedule annual age appropriate health screenings. Follow doctor's orders! • Stay moving! Remain active and exercise regularly.

The Importance of Elder Law: You must protect your assets, family and future now! For nearly 30 years, practicing law has been Ely Rosenzveig’s passion. His inspiration? That comes from, among other things, his life experiences, the people he has met, and the clients he works with every day. The widow who didn’t have a will and was concerned about her financial future. The family that was reeling from health issues impacting their elderly loved ones without any planning in place to address their needs, leaving them with the prospect of exorbitantly expensive care needs. Ely Rosenzveig was a rabbi in Westchester County. The plight of some in his congregation moved him to practice elder law and trust and estate planning. He would become a senior partner at one of the foremost elder law firms in the country, but left to join hands with his son, Ariel. “I really jumped at the opportunity to work in this area of law,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “I think it’s special kind of work. To help people and work with your son is incredibly rewarding. Ariel is a great asset – a wonderful and gifted young attorney.” The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. in White Plains practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and

estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the zealous advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. Appropriate estate and Medicaid planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. “People don’t want to talk about illness and death,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “It’s a tough subject. People are reluctant, but the type of measures that we implement for our clients can save them and their loved ones a lot of money. Proper planning will help provide financial and emotional security for all involved.”

The firm is very experienced in making sure that those eligible for Medicaid and Medicare get the benefits they deserve. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. has been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired, a dynamic only exacerbated with the passage of the Deficit reduction Act of 2006, and the new rules regarding the look-back requirements, and penalty period calculations for non-Medicaid exempt asset transfers. The firm has achieved remarkable results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided. No matter what the case, Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. prides itself on working with each client individually, catering to each one’s diverse needs. Estate planning should begin at a young age with a will, health care proxy, living

will and durable power of attorney. As you grow older and accumulate assets, it is especially important that you speak with an experience elder law attorney issues pertaining to issues concerning Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and further estate planning. Elder law is about more than just saving money. When viewed properly, elder law is about two major things: First, ensuring that your personal wishes — financial, medical, and legal — are carried out; and second, understanding that elder law is a family matter affecting an intricate web of individual relationships. Knowing that your potential long-term care needs have already been addressed frees you and your family from needless worry. And Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig are there to help their cherished clients every step of the way. “We want every client to feel like they are our only client,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “We are totally committed to ensuring that we be fully responsive to our clients’ every need. For us, this is tremendously rewarding. It is the very reason why we have become elder law attorneys.”

ToP DoCToRS of WESTCHESTER—DR. AlEx HIlARIo, ClINIC DIRECToR

Chiropractic Rehabilitation Source ChiroRehabSource.com Tel: 914-584-6864 199 Main Street, Suite 608, White Plains, NY 10601

If you're suffering from nerve problems in the arms and legs, you must read about a clinical study that showed

How 85% of Patients Eliminated Numbness, Tingling, or Sharp Pains Numbness, tingling, and pain are extremely annoying problems. It may come and go...interrupts your sleep...and even makes your arm or legs feel weak at times. Maybe you've even been to other doctors and they claim all the tests indicate you should feel fine.

If You Read Nothing Else, Read This: More than 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body's ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy. Read the full facts on this page. More Pills Are Not the Solution A common treatment for many nerve problems is the 'take some pills and wait and see' method. While this may be necessary for temporary relief of severe symptoms, using them long term is no way to live. Some of the more common drugs given include pain pills, anti-seizure mediations, and anti-depressants -- all of which have serious side effects. The Likely Cause of Your Problem My name is Dr. Alex Hilario, clinic director at Chiropractic Rehabilitation Source. I've been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for more than 10 years.

Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone. The good news is that chiropractic treatments have proven effective in helping to remove the pressure on the nerves. By using gentle techniques, I'm able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away. For example, numerous studies have proven chiropractic's effectiveness in helping nerve conditions. Patients showed an 85.5% resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments. - Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008 With chiropractic care, patients had “significant improvement in perceived comfort and function, nerve conduction and finger sensation overall.” – JMPT 1998 “Significant increase in grip strength and normalization of motor and sensory latencies were noted. Orthopedic tests were negative. Symptoms dissipated.” – JMPT 1994 What these studies mean is that you could soon be enjoying life...without those aggravating nerve problems. Could This Be Your Solution? It’s time for you to find out if chiropractic will be your neuropathy solution.

• An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. • I'll answer your most probing questions about nerve problems and how chiropractic can help. Until August 30, 2014 you can get everything I’ve listed here for only $47. The normal price for this type of evaluatio is $250, so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer. Call 914-584-6864 now. We can get you scheduled for your consultation, and exam as soon as there’s an opening. Our office is located in the heart of White Plains near Starbucks, Galleria Mall and Wal-Mart, when you call, tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Nerve Evaluation so she can get you on the schedule and make sure you receive proper credit for this special offer. Sincerely, Alex Hilario, D.C. P.S. Remember, you only have until August 30 to reserve an appointment at this significant discount. Why suffer for years in misery? That’s no way to live, not when there could be an easy solution to your problem.

For 14 days only, $30 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $250 for!

P.P.S. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your arms or legs hurt – and the pain just won’t go away!

What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you will receive:

Jennifer Lopez visits Montefiore to launch the Center for a Healthy Childhood Bronx native Jennifer Lopez, also known as Jenny from the block, recently came back home to visit Montefiore Health System. Lopez and her mom, Lynda, co-founders of the Lopez Family Foundation, and Montefiore Health System launched the Center for a Healthy Childhood at Montefiore’s Community Health Fair earlier this summer. The new initiative between the Lopez Family Foundation and Montefiore aims to promote healthy living through community health programming, positive messages to raise children's self-image and a healthy environment so every woman, child and family can achieve their full potential. During the surprise visit, the Lopez Family Foundation made a $250,000 donation to Montefiore. The fair, a concept brought to Montefiore by Jennifer and Lynda, was held on Montefiore’s Moses Campus. “We are proud to partner with Jennifer, Lynda and the entire Lopez Family Foundation to make a positive impact on the lives and futures of families in the Bronx,” said Steven M. Safyer, M.D., president and CEO, Montefiore. “Montefiore’s work with the Lopez Family Foundation will begin by improving vital education, understanding and access to healthy eating and exercise. It is only through partnerships like this that we can ensure every child has a healthy and nurturing childhood to achieve their full potential. ” Jennifer, Lynda and many of their friends and family attended the Community Health Fair to participate in activities, including a Zumba class featuring participants in B’N Fit, a program affiliated with the Center for a Healthy Childhood that helps teenagers maintain or lose weight. They also assisted in a healthy cooking demonstration, making smoothies for those at the fair.

“We can do so much to make the Bronx, our hometown, a healthier place. We can exercise together and we can eat well together. The Center for a Healthy Childhood will help make our vision a reality on every block,” said Jennifer Lopez. “It feels good to come home and talk to moms and kids about making healthy lifestyle decisions – they can make changes now that will set them on

a path for a long, happy life.” The Center builds upon Montefiore’s comprehensive community health programs and the long-standing commitment of Jennifer and Lynda to improving the health and well-being of women and children. “We love having the opportunity to offer resources that mothers, children and families in the Bronx need for better access to healthcare, health information and

health education,” said Lynda Lopez. “The Lopez Family Foundation is passionate about the health and well-being of mothers and children, and we're excited the Center for a Healthy Childhood will go deep into the community to provide needed support – whether it’s to educate about childhood nutrition, physical activity, emotional and intellectual engagement on health, or healthy

pregnancies and motherhood." The Center will serve Montefiore patients and their families, as well as the tens of thousands of children and families in the Bronx and beyond reached through partnerships with the New York City Department of Education, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and other health and social service providers.

Lawrence Hospital Center’s “Dinner with the Doctor” Series We’ve all been there… our feet hurt from the wrong type of shoes — an improper fit, the constant wearing of heels, and being overweight. These things, along with other issues, can lead to long-term foot problems such as bunions, hammer toes, heel spurs, and plantar fasciitis. Our feet are a complex system of bones, ligaments, nerves, and muscles that work together to enable us to walk, run, and do whatever it is we enjoy. One wrong move can throw everything out of balance. So what can you do now to avoid the agony of foot pain later? What if you are already suffering? We’ve got the answers for your tired hoofers. Join Stewart Kamen, MD, a board-certified podiatrist at Lawrence Hospital and Foot Associates of New York, to learn about the causes of foot pain and ways to treat it. The event will be held at Lawrence Hospital Center on July 17th, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A light dinner will be served. Register online soon as space is limited. The event is free — and bring a friend! For questions or more information about the Dinner with the Doctor Series, call (914) 787-1034. To join Lawrence's Spirit of Women Network, please call (855) SO-WOMEN or 1-855-769-6636. Through the launch of a nationwide series called Agony of de Feet, Lawrence Hospital is looking to spread awareness about foot pain and ailments. Agony of de Feet can help you to make informed decisions for you and your family members so you can enjoy a healthier lifestyle. Agony of de Feet is a great starting point for discussing and creating a health and wellness plan with your physician.

It’s a small tragedy, that forgotten bunch of once-vibrant parsley. Now it’s wilting and limp, tucked behind the milk in the back of the fridge. Or that loaf of fresh bread you were so proud to pick up from your local bakery—but you didn’t consume it quickly enough before it got rock-hard. Small food deaths occur all the time. Sometimes, however, there are things you can do to resurrect them, giving them one more shot at a delicious life.

How to bring food back from the dead Greens Gone Weak Wilted lettuces, sad herbs, and even wobbly celery can be brought back to life with a quick dip in a cold pool. Fill a large bowl with ice water and drop the produce in. Let sit 5 minutes or so. Drain, dry, and spin dry if appropriate. Rice That Ain’t Nice Dry, hard, refrigerator rice just needs a re-steam. Add a splash of water to a pot, add rice, and cook, covered, until hot and steaming. Works in a microwave too, just add a little water, cover, and microwave until tender and heated through. Vinaigrette of Regret Vinaigrette you forgot in the fridge door just needs a bright pick-me-up. Squeeze in a bit of lemon juice or add an extra tablespoon or so of the acid already in there, plus a pinch of salt to revive it. Bread That’s Dead Sure, you could make toast or breadcrumbs from stale bread— but if you need it to be pliable, just wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave for about 20 seconds. But after that, ACT QUICKLY! It will get harder and drier than when you started. Salad of Doom Day-old salad lives again: Toss soggy, dressed greens with fresh crunchy lettuce and vegetables for salad with a second life.

Accelerated Benefit Riders…What are they? By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC Accelerated Benefit Riders are additional protections that can be added to a permanent life insurance contract. They are also commonly referred to as Living Benefit Riders. Many of the largest carriers in the country are affording insureds the ability to receive benefits from their traditional whole or universal life insurance policies before death. We all know people are living longer and many of us are very concerned with the ever increasing financial hardship associated with an end-of-life illness. These include, but are not limited to, chronic care, critical illness & terminal illness just to name a few. Another issue seems to be access to these stand-alone life and health benefits because they are either too expensive or unavailable in the individual market. These accelerated benefit riders allow the insured to essentially customize their life insurance policy by adding additional coverages that suit their needs. Some riders are automatically included in the policy, while others have to be requested. Most of these riders come at no additional premium but each has their own purpose. Not all riders are available with all policies and they vary from carrier to carrier.

A s k

Let’s review some of the most common Accelerated Benefit Riders:

➢ Chronic Care Rider – In the event long-term care is needed because the insured cannot perform a number of Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) such as transferring, toileting, continence, bathing, dressing, or eating, the advanced benefit is usually paid as a set percentage of the death benefit up to a maximum monthly benefit of $50,0001. With chronic care, the condition must likely be permanent.

➢ Critical Illness Rider - In the event the insured is diagnosed with one of several specified critical illnesses (heart attack, stroke, cancer, etc.) the advanced benefit is paid as a lump sum based upon a set percentage, usually 50-80% of the death benefit. The insured can use the critical illness benefits to pay for anything he chooses—the proceeds are paid directly to the insured and there are no spending limits. Therefore, a client can use the insurance proceeds to pay for basic living expenses that are not directly related to the medical care he receives, or for medical care not covered by health insurance.

➢ Terminal Illness Rider - In the event that the insured is diagnosed as terminally ill, the advanced benefit is usually paid as a lump sum based upon a set percentage, usually 50% of the death benefit, up to a lifetime maximum of $1MM2. This coverage is also available on most term life policies commonly known as an Accelerated Death Benefit Rider. In general, accelerated benefits can range from 25 to 100 percent of the death benefit. The payment depends on your policy's face value, the terms of your contract, and the state where you reside. The cost may be included in your insurance premium or added to the policy for a small amount, usually a percentage of the base premium. Some companies only charge you for the option if you use it. Payments of accelerated benefits will reduce the cash value and death benefit otherwise payable under the policy. Always ask your insurer to provide you with a quote before you exercise your accelerated death benefit claim. In most cases, accelerated benefits are not subject to federal income taxes. Under the federal tax code, a terminally ill person (defined as a person having only 12 months to live) would not have to pay taxes on accelerated benefits. A chronically ill person is usually exempt but may have to qualify for the exemption by being certified each year. Under U.S. Department of Health and Human Services policy, you cannot be forced to collect accelerated benefits from your life insurance policy before qualifying for Medicaid. But if you choose to receive accelerated benefits, that money could be considered income, which might affect your Medicaid eligibility. To ensure compliance with current tax laws, check with your local tax advisor. For more information about Life Insurance and Accelerated Benefit Riders please call Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC at 914-682-2190 or toll free 877-676-9900. Andrew is certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC) from the Corporation for Long-Term Care Certification, Inc. Andrew is a member in good standing of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), which is the premier Association of financial professionals nationally. Andrew’s offices are located at 50 Main Street, White Plains, NY 10606 and at 500 West Putnam, Greenwich CT 06831. 1 2

Don’t Touch That! 6 ways to protect yourself from germs in public places On average, an adult can touch as many as 30 objects within a minute, including germ-harboring, high-traffic surfaces such as light switches, doorknobs, phone receivers and remote controls. At home, you do all you can to keep germs at bay. But what happens when you go out to dinner, do some grocery shopping or visit the doctor’s office? If you know where germs are most likely to lurk, you can protect yourself. 1. Restaurant Menus Have you ever seen anyone wash a menu? Probably not. A study in the Journal of Medical Virology reported that cold and flu viruses can survive for 18 hours on hard surfaces. If it’s a popular restaurant, hundreds of people could be handling the menus — and passing their germs on to you. Never let a menu touch your plate or silverware, and be sure to wash your hands after you place your order. 2. Restroom Door Handles Don’t think you can escape the restroom without touching the door handle? Palm a spare paper towel after you wash up and use it to grasp the handle. Yes, other patrons may think you’re a germ-phobe — but you’ll never see them again, and you’re the one who won’t get sick.

3. Soap Dispensers About 25 percent of public restroom dispensers are contaminated with fecal bacteria. Be sure to scrub your hands thoroughly with plenty of hot water for 15 to 20 seconds — and if you happen to have an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, use that, too. 4. Doctor’s offices A doctor’s office is not the place to be if you’re trying to avoid germs. Bring your own magazines (and toys for your children) and pack your own tissues and hand sanitizers, which should have an alcohol content of at least 60 percent. If possible, in the waiting room, leave at least two chairs between you and the other patients to reduce your chances of picking up their bugs. Germ droplets from coughing and sneezing can travel about 3 feet before falling to the floor.

2. Lemon Wedges According to a 2007 study in the Journal of Environmental Health, nearly 70 percent of the lemon wedges perched on the rims of restaurant glasses contain disease-causing microbes. Tell your server that you’d prefer your beverage sans fruit. Why risk it? 5. grocery Carts The bacterial counts on the handles of shopping carts exceeded those of the average public restroom. To protect yourself: Swab the handle with a disinfectant wipe before grabbing hold (stores are starting to provide them, so look around for a dispenser).

What do doctors do to treat their own pain? As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
