McMahon Foundation donates $1 million to support advanced technology for breast cancer detection at Greenwich Hopsital For years, Linda McMahon has been recognized for her community and charitable contributions in Fairfield County and beyond.

McMahon, the co-founder and former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, received the Humanitarian Award from the Catholic Big Sisters & Big Brothers of New York City and the Spirit of Hope Award from Liberation Programs in Norwalk earlier this summer.

Of course, McMahon continues to give back to the communities and people she cares so much about.

The Greenwich Hospital Foundation recently announced that Linda McMahon has given a $1 million gift through the Vince & Linda McMahon Family Foundation to purchase

3-D mammography machines, the most advanced technology available for early breast cancer detection.

The machines are located at the Greenwich Hospital Breast Center, within the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Greenwich, as well as at the Hospital's Diagnostic Imaging Center in Stamford. The Breast Center is a national leader in early breast cancer detection, with patient survival rates of 99 percent, 96.1 percent and 89.6 percent among Stages O, I, and II patients, respectively. These rates far surpass the national average at each stage.

"Linda's generosity has propelled the Breast Center into the next generation of early diagnosis and patient care," said

Greenwich Hospital President and CEO Frank A. Corvino.

"Her gift is not just a gift to the Hospital, but also to the nearly 18,000 patients we screen annually. We are thrilled to be able to extend our care in such a meaningful way."

Three-dimensional mammography takes conventional 2-D images along with 15 images in an arc, which are then reconstructed into one mm slices. The radiologist can then scroll through the images one slice at a time, in additional to looking at the conventional 2-D images.

This technology has been shown to increase breast cancer detection by as much as 33 percent and to reduce the need for additional imaging by 10-20 percent.

McMahon was inspired to make her gift to Greenwich Hospital after learning about the work of the Center and its commitment to patient-centered diagnostics as championed by its medical director, Barbara A. Ward, MD. "The Greenwich Hospital Breast Center has set a national standard for early detection, and these machines will increase its ability to support patients in the best possible way," said Ms. McMahon. "My hope is that this new technology, administered by the compassionate experts at Smilow Cancer Hospital's Greenwich Hospital Campus, will ensure that we are doing all we can to aggressively identify and treat this all-too-prevalent disease."

Back to School rush doesn’t have to be stressful Say it isn’t so: The beautiful Fairfield County summer is heading into the homestretch.

Get ready to get into back to school mode.

Yes, your days of relaxing poolside are just about over. The hustle and bustle of sending your kids back to school can be stressful.

Here are some Healthcare News tips to help you stay stress-free and prepare for the coming school year.

Arrange “me” time Alleviate back-to-school stress with mandatory parental down time.

Whether you use the break to sleep in, have date night or curl up with the latest bestseller, reserving time for yourself is key to zapping stress.

Don't forget your own needs. Maybe your days relaxing by the pool aren’t over after all.

Shop strategically With back-to-school commercials hitting our TV screens earlier and earlier each year, it's easy to fall prey to the anxiety that they generate. Transaltion: You overbuy!

Your kids don't really need five new outfits; buy only what your kids really need." Figure out what they've outgrown, then determine what they need to fill in those gaps and purchase accordingly. It shouldn't be a grand – and painfully expensive – shopping event.

When it comes to shopping for supplies, you might want to wait until after the first day of school, when supply lists are often sent home.

Choose extracurricular activities carefully When kids are enrolled in too many after-school activities, it creates a one-way ticket to parental overload. Make time for breakfast You tell your kids that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do you follow your own advice? Eating breakfast before you head out the door will stave off hunger pains, boost your energy and help you keep your focus for wherever the day takes you.

Your mood goes up and down the same way your kids' [moods] do when it comes to food and energy. Skip sugary cereals and carbohydrate-laden meals. Instead, opt for a protein-rich breakfast that includes eggs, oatmeal or turkey bacon. The protein will provide plenty of energy until lunchtime, and will prevents spikes in blood-sugar that can leave you irritable and anxious.

Get everyone on a schedule Kids find comfort in routine, and having stress-free kids makes for stress-free parents. By creating a schedule for doing homework, going to bed, waking up, eating breakfast and taking showers, you can make the daily routine less chaotic for everyone.

Having your kids decide on the routine will be less frustrating than you telling them that they have a certain amount of time in the morning or that they have to get their homework done as soon as they come home. By adding their input, your kids will be less frazzled and more co-operative – and you'll be less stressed as a result.

Plan ahead To eliminate disorder at home, designate where school bags and supplies will be stored and stock plenty of lunch options.

Look for ways to simplify life as opposed to complicating it.

Your kids can put away their own belongings and easily find them the next day. They can even pack their own lunches, saving you time and anxiety.

Back to School Healthy eating guide Kids are back to school and you’re back to business after a relaxing summer, but you don’t have to sacrifice eating healthy just because you’re all busy. Check out these ideas healthy options for you’re the school lunch box.

Fruits and veggies: Make your weekly farmers market trip a family outing and explain to kids what it means for something to be in season. Show them how sweet and flavorful foods can taste when they’re at their peak and let them pick their favorites.

Homemade granola: Store bought granola is usually more like dessert than a healthy snack, but you can make your own with less sugar and it is still delicious.

Hummus: A small tupperware of hummus is a perfect accompaniment to cut up vegetables, whole grain breads and crackers.

Peanut butter: Like hummus, peanut (or any nut) butter can be a wonderful dip for fruits and veggies. Natural nut butters that have no added sugar, no added trans fat, are full of healthy fats (this is good).

Trail mix: If your child can tolerate nuts then trail mix is a fun and nutritious snack. Try different combinations of nuts and dried fruits.

Healthy sandwich choices include: hummus, avocado, peanut/almond butter, soft fruit, canned Alaskan salmon, cheese, roasted chicken or turkey, egg salad, mixed veggies, etc. Try not to choose deli meats as your standard choice, since they are highly processed and have been tied to all sorts of health problems. Likewise, limit canned tuna to once per month because of the high mercury content.

Sandwiches: When choosing bread, look for artisan brands with few ingredients and no preservatives. This kind of bread is often found in paper bags and costs less than the fake-healthy soft stuff in plastic.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bones become extremely porous, are subject to fracture, and heal slowly, occurring especially in women following menopause and often leading to curvature of the spine from vertebral collapse.

Arthritis is a joint disorder that is characterized by inflammation in the joints. Risk factors for osteoporosis include being 65 years of age or older, having a family history of osteoporotic fracture having a tendency to fall, or early menopause.

Some minor risk factors include low calcium intake, low body weight, excess caffeine and alcohol, and smoking. To reduce the risk of osteoporosis, do weight-bearing and strength-training exercises at least three times per week to strengthen your bones, eat a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and take a calcium supplement daily.

PMS and Menopause As most women know, PMS is a very common syndrome. It is believed that changing hormone levels and brain chemistry play a role in PMS. Many symptoms have been linked to PMS, including irritability, bloating, weight gain, fatigue, abdominal pain, food cravings and forgetfulness. Mild or moderate PMS symptoms can be managed by exercise and a balanced diet.

Many women choose hormone replacement therapy to help them through menopause. Natural ingredients are another option.

In some studies, Black Cohosh, Soy, Dong Quai and other natural ingredients have been shown to help alleviate discomforts.

Women’s Health Breast health Thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, millions of women are surviving breast cancer today.

Still, the chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36.

Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

The National Cancer Institute recommends a mammogram every one to two years after age 40. If you’re at higher risk, talk to your doctor about being screened earlier, and do monthly breast self-examinations. A woman’s risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. About 15% of women who get breast cancer have a family member diagnosed with it To reduce your risk of cancer in general, eat more fruits and vegetables, reduce dietary fat, drink less alcohol, quit smoking and exercise regularly. To reduce your breast cancer risk in particular, be sure to exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight.

Balanced nutrition Poor dieting can deplete women’s bodies of key nutrients. Eat a balanced diet with low-fat protein sources, complex carbohydrates, plenty of fruits and green and yellow vegetables - and go light on the salt, sugar and alcohol.

A healthy diet and lifestyle are your best weapons to fight cardiovascular disease. According to the American Heart Association, You may be eating plenty of food, but your body may not be getting the nutrients it needs to be healthy. Nutrient-rich foods have vitamins, minerals, fiber and other n u t r i ents but are lower in calories.

To get the nutrients you need, choose foods like vegetables, fruits, whole-grain products and fat-free or low-fat dairy products most often.

Obesity Over 60 percent of U.S. adult women are overweight, according to estimates from the National Center for Health Statistics of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Just over one-third of overweight adult women are obese.

You can become overweight or obese when you eat more calories than you use. A calorie is a unit of energy in the food you eat. Your body needs this energy to function and to be active.

But if you take in more energy than your body uses, you will gain weight.

The fact is: Heart disease causes 1 in 3 deaths each year in women. That’s approximately one woman every minute. But it doesn’t affect all women alike, and the warning signs for women aren’t the same in men. What’s more: These facts only begin to scratch the surface.

There are several misconceptions about heart disease in women, and they could be putting you at risk. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health for this very reason.

Heart disease affects women of all ages. For younger women, the combination of birth control pills and smoking boosts heart disease risks by 20 percent. And while the risks do increase with age, things like overeating and a sedentary lifestyle can cause plaque to accumulate and lead to clogged arteries later in life.

But even if you lead a completely healthy lifestyle, being born with an underlying heart condition can be a risk factor.

Many things can put you at risk for these problems – one’s you can control, and others that you can’t. But the key takeaway is that with the right information, education and care, heart disease in women can be treated, prevented and even ended.

Women’s Health Stress Stress is a feeling you get when faced with a challenge. In small doses, stress can be good for you because it makes you more alert and gives you a burst of energy. For instance, if you start to cross the street and see a car about to run you over, that jolt you feel helps you to jump out of the way before you get hit. But feeling stressed for a long time can take a toll on your mental and physical health.

Long-term stress can help cause a variety of health conditions for every women, from the doting stay-at-home mom, to the working woman. Think three sick kids, not getting that job promotion and trying to manage the bills.

High blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke may be stress related cardiovascular conditions. Some women experience changes in their sexuality and encounter various sexual dysfunctions such as loss of desire as a result of stress. Other side effects include fatigue, various aches and pains, headaches, or as emotional disorders such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances.

There are steps you can take to help you handle stress in a positive way and keep it from making you sick. Try these tips to keep stress in check: Become a problem solver.

Make a list of the things that cause you stress. From your list, figure out which problems you can solve now and which are beyond your control for the moment.

From your list of problems that you can solve now, start with the little ones. Learn how to calmly look at a problem, think of possible solutions, and take action to solve the problem. Being able to solve small problems will give you confidence to tackle the big ones. And feeling confident that you can solve problems will go a long way to helping you feel less stressed.

Be flexible. Sometimes, it’s not worth the stress to argue. Give in once in awhile or meet people halfway.

Get organized. Think ahead about how you’re going to spend your time.

Write a to-do list. Figure out what’s most important to do and do those things first.

Set limits. When it comes to things like work and family, figure out what you can really do. There are only so many hours in the day. Set limits for yourself and others. Don’t be afraid to say NO to requests for your time and energy.

Relax Take deep breaths. If you're feeling stressed, taking a few deep breaths makes you breathe slower and helps your muscles relax.

Stretch. Stretching can also help relax your muscles and make you feel less tense.

Massage tense muscles. Having someone massage the muscles in the back of your neck and upper back can help you feel less tense.

Take time to do something you want to do. We all have lots of things that we have to do. But often we don't take the time to do the things that we really want to do. It could be listening to music, reading a good book, or going to a movie. Think of this as an order from your doctor, so you won’t feel guilty!

Take care of your body Get enough sleep. Getting enough sleep helps you recover from the stresses of the day. Also, being well-rested helps you think better so that you are prepared to handle problems as they come up. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night to feel rested.

Eat right. Try to fuel up with fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains.

Don’t be fooled by the jolt you get from caffeine or high-sugar snack foods. Your energy will wear off, and you could wind up feeling more tired than you did before.

Get moving. Getting physical activity can not only help relax your tense muscles but improve your mood. Research shows that physical activity can help relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Don’t deal with stress in unhealthy ways.

This includes drinking too much alcohol, using drugs, smoking, or overeating.

Connect with others Share your stress. Talking about your problems with friends or family members can sometimes help you feel better. They might also help you see your problems in a new way and suggest solutions that you hadn't thought of.

Get help from a professional if you need it.

If you feel that you can no longer cope, talk to your doctor. She or he may suggest counseling to help you learn better ways to deal with stress. Your doctor may also prescribe medicines, such as antidepressants or sleep aids.

Help others. Volunteering in your community can help you make new friends and feel better about yourself.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days.
