It’s not just good luck and good genes that lead to a healthy life. Research shows that our actions have a big say in the matter, too. Many major health problems that affect men and boys are preventable through lifestyle changes, early detection, and treatment.

And yet, several things work against men when it comes to health. They tend to smoke and drink more than women. They don’t seek medical help as often as women. Some men define themselves by their work, which can add to stress.

Get routine exams and screenings: Ask your doctor how often you need to be examined. Ask about screening tests for certain diseases and conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sexually transmitted infections, and certain types of cancer.

Get enough sleep: It can affect your mood and your health. Try certain changes that can improve your sleep. See your doctor if you think you have a serious problem.

Eat healthy: Nutritious foods give you energy and may lower your risk of certain diseases. Focus on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free milk products. Learn nutrition basics and how to read a food label.

Stay at a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese can raise your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Find out your body mass index, or BMI, to see if you’re at risk. Eat healthy foods, control portion sizes, and be active to keep your weight in check.

Ah, finally, summer is almost here. And you know what the means. The man in your life will be eager to get outside and mow the lawn, tend to your garden and address fix ‘em up projects.

Yeah, right.

But we will give him this: Your man will be eager to get in front of the barbecue and flip a few steaks, while enjoying a cold beverage.

Summer is a great time to have fun, whether it means taking a vacation, or amping up your fitness program.

It’s also a time for men to pay attention to their health and safety. Below are Healthcare News’ tips to help you stay safe and healthy this summer and all year long.

Be prepared Take steps to prepare yourself and your family for severe weather and natural disasters before they happen. Learn how to cope and recover when disaster strikes.

Tips Make an emergency plan and stock supplies ahead of time. Review your options.

Learn about your community's emergency plans, warning signals, evacuation routes, and locations of emergency shelters.

Identify potential home hazards, and know how to secure or protect them before a disaster strikes.

Know beforehand what common reactions may occur to help your ability to cope.

Accept your own reactions and those of people around you.

Locate and secure your important papers, including insurance policies, wills, licenses, passports, and birth certificates.

Stay physically active The summer is a great time to play outdoor games, garden, or walk.

Start a new routine that combines fun and physical activity. Active people are less likely than inactive people to be obese or to have high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, coronary artery disease and stroke, depression, colon cancer, and premature death.

Tips Adults should get 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity most, preferably all, days of the week.

Children and adolescents should participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity

physical activity most, preferably all, days of the week.

Start at an easy pace and increase time and distance gradually.

Don't overdo it. Prevent injuries.

Stay cool Sun protection is important all year round, not just during the summer or at the beach. Take steps to help prevent skin cancer and other conditions.

Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet many people succumb to extreme heat each year.

Lower your risk for heat-related illness.

Tips When possible, avoid outdoor activities during midday, when the sun's rays are strongest.

Cover up with clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect exposed skin.

Drink plenty of cool, non-alcoholic fluids.Seek shade.

Wear sunscreen and lip screen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Remember to reapply it as needed. continued on next page

People suffer heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to compensate and properly cool themselves.

The body normally cools itself by sweating. But under some conditions, sweating just isn’t enough. In such cases, a person’s body temperature rises rapidly. Very high body temperatures may damage the brain or other vital organs.

Summer’s finally here and we’re spending more time in the sun doing activities such as swimming, biking, fishing, things we only dream of doing during the dark days of winter colder months. But, as the heat and humidity levels climb, it’s important to take precautions to prevent heat related illness, the most common of which is heat exhaustion. Do you know the symptoms of heat exhaustion?

First of all, what causes heat exhaustion?

Before you hit the beach, the golf course or the backyard to mow the lawn this summer, you should know the risks of heat exhaustion.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 8,015 deaths were attributed to excessive heat exposure from 1979-2003.

People suffer heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to compensate and properly cool themselves.

Preventing Heat Exhaustion • Stay indoors in the air conditioning on very hot days if possible. This is especially important if the heat index is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

• Drink plenty of water. Cut down on caffeine, and avoid alcohol when it is hot out.

• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

• Try to complete strenuous activities before 10:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m.

• If you must work or exercise outside when it is hot, take frequent breaks. Be sure to stay well hydrated before, during and after your activity.

• Stay in the shade as much as possible. It won’t eliminate the danger from the heat, but it will keep you a few degrees cooler than if you were in the sunlight.

If your symptoms get worse once you’ve attempted to cool off, or they last longer than 30 minutes to an hour, prompt medical attention is warranted. Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke even if you’re no longer in the heat.

It’s important to take the dangers of being active in hot weather seriously. Heat exhaustion is unpleasant, and it can lead to a potentially life-threatening situation. By making a few adjustments to your plans and routine, you can greatly reduce your risk.

Your thoughts should be turning toward the outdoors, activity, and exercise. This is the time of year when people begin working out with hopes of dropping a size or three. Jogging is one of the healthiest and fastest ways to get in shape, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. Anthony Tanzi, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Physical Therapist at Northern Westchester Hospital, think it’s an excellent choice.

Tanzi competed in Ironman Triathlons and currently hold the Nutmeg State Half-Marathon record. He helps athletes of all ages compete in every type of event, from their first 5K to ultradistance races, and if there’s one thing he’s learned, it’s that too many people start training too hard or go too far and end up with an injury. You have to pick a program that suits you, and you have to stick with it.

Here are some more tips from Tanzi: Getting clearance from your doctor before you start any exercise program is mandatory, but once you have the okay, the second thing to do is get a pair of running shoes. People often think they can jog in any type of shoe, but that can lead to injuries. Tanzi suggests beginners seek out a shoe that provides a mid-level cushioning. You don’t need a lot of padding, but the minimalist shoes really aren’t suitable for people unaccustomed to the repetitive stress of jogging.

Plan to run about three times a week, and start with a distance that challenges you without completely draining your energy. Track your distance and efforts, and then increase it by about 10 percent each week—but no more than that. It may not seem like a lot, but doing too much too soon is how joggers get injured. If you run about 10 miles that first week, add a total of one mile to next week’s tally. Don’t forget to warm up for at least five minutes before you start. Walk at a normal pace, then a brisk one, then break into a slow jog and slowly increase speed until you reach your exercise pace. Cool down for about the same amount of time: You can do a slow jog or walk for this.

You would be wise to consult with a trainer or coach when setting up your jogging program.

Hernia Center Established at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center Har Chi Lau, MD

The Phelps Memorial Hospital Hernia Center has been established under the medical direction of surgeon Har Chi Lau, MD, to provide patients with expert diagnosis and specialized treatment for all types of hernias.

What is a Hernia? If a weakness occurs in the wall or muscle that holds an organ in place, the organ may push through and create a bulge called a hernia. Some hernias are present at birth, some appear suddenly and others develop slowly over time. They are usually not life-threatening but can be if they become strangulated.

Hernias will never go away without surgical attention.

People with an inguinal hernia (the most common type) usually experience pain, with or without a lump in the groin. The lump is more easily felt when standing and seems to disappear when lying down. Pain is especially noticeable when bending, lifting or coughing.

Diagnosis. If you suspect that you have a hernia, a visit to your primary care physician or a hernia specialist is recommended.

Sometimes, what seems to be a hernia is actually a muscle pull or groin sprain. A physician experienced in treating hernias has the expertise to tell the difference. If a hernia is small and painless, your doctor may just look at it periodically and advise you to avoid straining. If it becomes large or painful, surgery is usually the best option.

Surgery. Your surgeon’s skill and the type of hernia operation you have will influence the time it takes for you to recover and, importantly, whether the hernia will recur.

There are two common surgical approaches: • Open surgery involves larger incisions, more trauma to surrounding tissue, and a longer recovery period than laparoscopic surgery.

• Laparoscopic surgery uses small incisions, a tiny camera and specialized surgical skill. Less anesthesia is needed than with open surgery, and there is less pain, less risk for infection and less scarring. Patients are able to return to their normal activities quickly.

A typical laparoscopic hernia operation involves four small incisions – one for the camera and three through which the hands perform the procedure. “When I perform laparoscopic hernia surgery,” says Dr. Lau, “I do everything with one hand, so only two incisions are needed – one for the camera and one for my hand.”

The tear in the muscle is repaired with surgical mesh. Preferring not to use standard-sized mesh, Dr. Lau customizes the mesh size and shape to fit each patient exactly, which is why hernia recurrence is rare among his patients.

Dr. Lau is a board-certified surgeon with expertise in minimally invasive surgery. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed his surgery residency and internship at Allegheny University Hospital. hile the focus is on winning, many coaches and parents also want to protect players from Pitcher’s Elbow — a painful injury caused by excessive throwing known as Medial Epicondyle Apophysitis. Millions of Little Leaguers are putting themselves at risk for injury in their attempt to throw fast and breaking pitches.

Pitcher’s Elbow is a chronic inflammation of the growth plate on the elbow joint, which manifests itself as pain and swelling inside the elbow.

Approximately 50 percent of Little Leaguers ages 9 to 14 will experience elbow pain. Pitchers in this same age group who pitch more than 100 innings a year experience a three to four times greater risk of elbow or shoulder injury. Those who continue to pitch through the pain can eventually cause the growth plate to separate from the joint, requiring surgery to re-attach it.

Routinely players will go from a game in one league to a practice or game in another league and pitch on backto-back days. If coaches on both teams are unaware of the fact that the pitcher just pitched for another league, there will be a misrepresentation of league pitch counts and a subsequent increase to one’s risk for injury.

These risk factors contribute to elbow pain in youth baseball players: Age. Youth baseball players are at greater risk because their elbow joint (bones, growth plates, and ligaments) are not fully developed and are more susceptible to overuse injuries.

Pitching too many games. The number of games pitched should be carefully monitored and follow the league’s pitch count rules. If pain occurs before the pitch count limit is reached, then the player should stop immediately. Rotating pitchers during games is a good idea to ensure adequate rest is given to each pitcher.

Curveballs and breaking pitches. Both of these types of pitches appear to put more stress on the growth plate than other types of pitches.

Improper mechanics. Proper throwing mechanics decreases forces on the elbow joint.

In keeping with Burke Medical Research Institute’s mission to help reduce disability from illness or injury, the institute has launched a new Restorative Neurology Clinic to assist patients regain movement through robot-assisted therapy. It is appropriate for those with decreased range of motion caused by neurological illness or injury such as stroke, spinal cord injury or brain injury, and those whose motor recovery has stalled.

The new clinic’s approach is based on findings from years of study in motor function and through collaboration with other medical rehabilitation experts. Studies have shown that engaging in this form of robotic therapy can lead to significant and meaningful improvements in arm function in patients who have had a stroke.

There will be two types of robots to be used in the clinic and both were custom-designed for Burke by Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The robots provide customized, goal-directed therapy aimed at building arm function, strength and re-training of the nerves from the brain to body connection. The first robot is the Planar Robot, which focuses on shoulder and elbow function. The other robot is the Wrist Robot, which helps to regain function and strengthen the wrist and forearm. Both robots gently assist patients with initiation, accuracy and smoothness of natural movement. As patients’ actions become more accurate and

stronger in their movement patterns, the robots will adjust to require the patient to initiate more movement.

Westchester’s Own “Singing Doctor”—Dr. Pete Richel Dozens of fluffy friends got sutured, x-rayed, casted and cared for, plus a checkup by Dr. Pete.

As part of the annual Teddy Bear Clinic at Northern Westchester Hospital, the stuffed animals received a full work-up recently.

By performing routine medical tasks on the toys, such as inserting an IV or putting a cast on a “broken” limb, organizers said they hoped to introduce young children to the hospital in a friendly way.

“So many children fear going to the doctor or fear going to a hospital,” said Maria Simonetti, Director of Community Health Outreach at Northern Westchester Hospital.

“This is a way to expose them to these things before an emergency.”

Some, more seriously injured teddy bears, were even stitched up by hospital nurses.

“He feels better,” said 6-year-old Alex Spector, holding up his brown bear and showing the cast wrapped around his arm.

Dr. Pete is, of course, Dr. Pete Richel, the hospital’s Chief of Pediatrics. A few brave children even let the doctor listen to their own heartbeats and took a taste of the flavored tongue depressors. Families were also taken on a tour of the Pediatric Unit, learning the ins and outs of what a stay in the hospital entails.

Richel has developed a unique treatment for doctor’s office anxiety – cheerful singing and funny routines that help ease the pain of his

young patients at his practice.

Dr. Pete playfully compares his caring routine to Mister Rogers meets Jim Carrey. He’s been singing to his patients in his office for 21 years.

Dr. Pete has even released children’s CD’s – with all proceeds going to special needs children – and performs at local bookstores.

Dr. Pete is a trained musician.

“I’ve always been a singer,” he said.

Dr. Pete worked in commercials on his way to becoming a pediatrician.

Some of his favorite artists are The Eagles, James Taylor and Michael McDonald. However, when he’s working a room in his office, you can catch Dr. Pete singing one of his trademark songs such as “Hot Shots.”

Gilda’s Club Westchester at Hudson Valley Hospital Center is asking for donations of new and gently used books about cancer for a children’s library it is developing for its Kid 2 Kid support group program at the Hospital’s Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center. The support group, which starts on March 21, is for children ages 5-12 who have a family member living with cancer. Peekskill’s Field Library recently donated a book cart to hold the collection.

“We are grateful to the Field Library for donating a book cart to the program,’’ said Anne Campbell-Maxwell, Director of Oncology Services at the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center. “We are now asking the public for help to fill our cart with books. We are looking for books that will help these children better understand and cope with the cancer diagnosis of a loved one as well as books that are just “great reads” for a child and parent or significant other.”

Miranda Dold, Director of Outreach and Program Development for Gilda’s Club Westchester, said ideally Gilda’s is looking for books from a list of those recommended for children dealing with cancer in the family, but other books on general topics are also welcome.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days.
