Astorino announces Caregiver Conference on November 2 Program to address caring for people of all ages Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino has announced that “Caregiving Across the Lifespan,” a free conference that will address the emotional and physical challenges caregivers face in providing for loved ones of all ages, will take place Saturday, Nov. 2.

The conference will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Community Center, 125 Lozza Drive, Valhalla.

Admission and on-site parking are free.

“Family caregivers have big responsibilities and deserve our support,” Astorino said. “I hope as many people as possible will find time to attend this very worthwhile event.”

Keynote speakers will be Beth and Nick Wyman, who will talk about their journey of caring for a mentally and physically disabled child at their home as well as an ill parent who lived a distance away. The Wymans are actors, and Nick is president of the Actors’ Equity Association.

The conference will also offer the caregivers free, one-on-one consultations with elder law attorneys, geriatric care managers and social workers.

In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Westchester County’s Livable Communities Initiative and three of its programs: the Caregiver Coach program; the Care Circles of Westchester: Step Forward & Give Back program; and the Caregiver Collaborative.

Thanksgiving is the start of the Holiday season. It’s special and wonderful.

It’s a great time to spend with friends and family and be thankful for everything you have.

Remember, Thanksgiving is not just a placeholder between Halloween and Christmas; it is a time to express gratitude for everything that you have.

Thanksgiving traces its origins to ancient harvest festivals.

It became an official U.S. holiday in 1863 under President Abraham Lincoln. In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt signed a law fixing Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November.

Thanksgiving is the busiest travel period of the year because families make a special effort to be together. But many people stay close to home to prepare Thanksgiving meals for the needy at churches and other charitable facilities. Eating turkey on Thanksgiving Day is a must for most Americans — even those who must work on that holiday.

Make this Thanksgiving a healthy one!

So you want to eat healthy this Thanksgiving.

But there's one problem: You aren’t doing the cooking because you’re celebrating the holiday at a friend or relative’s house.

Still, you can avoid grandma’s turkey smothered in gravy or Aunt Karen’s buttered corn, choosing healthier options.

Here are some tips to eating healthy on Thanksgiving without starving yourself.

• Don’t arrive to the dinner table hungry. Make sure you eat a filling and nutritious breakfast or lunch. When hunger sets in as the aromas fill your host’s home, eat healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, nuts or any whole grain snacks.

• Two words: Portion control. Many people tend to overeat on Thanksgiving – and don’t get us started on leftovers. Try to keep your portions to a minimum.

• When it comes to the turkey, if you have a choice, opt for breast meat rather than dark meat.

Remove the skin no matter what part of the turkey you are served.

• Try to fill your plate with as many vegetables as possible. Of course, you can indulge in some stuffing.

Just serve yourself a small portion. Also, remember, you don’t have to eat everything served. Maybe choose between mashed and sweet potatoes.

• And here’s a tip: Sweet potatoes are healthier.

Mashed potatoes are often full of cream and butter.

• Pass on the rolls of butter, they fill you up, and are loaded with extra calories. And, as hard as it may be to fathom, you should hold the gravy. At least, think of limiting it.

• And last, but certainly not least: Your favorite course. Right, dessert! Don’t stop reading.

The good news: Pumpkin pie is not ideal when it comes to eating healthy, but it’s an excellent source of vitamin A, and a good source of calcium and iron.

Pumpkin pie is healthier than most typical Thanksgiving desert options. So you can indulge. Just remember those two words: Portion control.

2 minutes: Keep moving with box steps. Stand with feet hip-width apart, elbows bent and hands in fists. Imagine there is a box outlined on the floor in front of you. Step right foot to the top right corner, then stop left foot to top left corner. Quickly step back to the corners behind you (leading with right foot).

Repeat for one minute, then switch and lead with your left leg.

3 minutes: Brisk walk - talking should be tough but not impossible.

2 minutes: Side steps. Stand with feet together and knees bent. Take a wide step put to the right, tapping the left foot into the right, then step out to the left, tapping right foot into left.

Repeat.

How to avoid a family disaster at Thanksgiving (because they do happen) There is that harmonious American family happily sitting around the turkey-laden table. See them on the covers of women’s magazines. See them in ads for tablecloths and centerpieces. See them on television and at the movies.

Imagine that. Now, for a reality check: Do you have vegetarians in your family who hate meals that center around “dead animals”? Does the guest list include adult women who compete in the areas of cooking, cleaning, decorating, and children’s achievements? Are ex-spouses trying to share Thanksgiving for the sake of their children? Normal families deal with these issues every year at Thanksgiving.

Here are tips for your family to get through Thanksgiving in peace: Spend the holiday in a public place Give the family cooks a break by moving Thanksgiving to a restaurant. Most people behave better in a public place. This maneuver also gives people the right to leave when they want to.

Maybe have the entire extended family meet at a resort for the weekend instead of staying at family members’ houses. It’s less work and more fun. When tensions build, people can retreat to the privacy of their rooms.

If you cannot afford to this strategy, try inviting some friends to your Thanksgiving. Family members are less likely to act up in front of outsiders.

If you are the host, don’t exhaust yourself before Thanksgiving dinner Right before the holidays, furniture and rug sales always go up.

Many family members, especially siblings, are in competition over issues like who has the best and cleanest house, who is the best cook, etc. If you are hosting Thanksgiving, don’t get into this kind of competitiveness: it will only exhaust you and ruin your holiday. It is okay to cut corners. Include ready-made foods along with homemade ones, close off messy rooms, and accept help in the kitchen. Your relaxed mood will set the tone of the gathering.

Spend time and energy on planning entertainment Thanksgiving is the slowest afternoon of the year. The parade, the turkey, the football games and lethargy caused by overeating make it a long boring time, especially for children. Families get “cabin fever” and tensions arise.

Let the dinner end by early afternoon so that people can go to a movie or take a walk, if they desire. Have board games and other entertainment available.

Have a clever seating arrangement Try using place cards to assign seats so that you can separate people who do not get along. Don’t seat family members who have been feuding for years next to each other. Try changing the subject before an argument escalates. Use humor to diffuse a situation or try remaining silent if you are attacked. If necessary, get up and leave the table.

Why Buy Multi-Life LTC Insurance Now…?

By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC As many of my readers know, the long-term care insurance market continues to evolve. For the last couple of years, I have been diligently writing about these dramatic changes so folks can understand what is really going on and what to expect down the road.

To review, for the last ten years insurers have taken a financial beating due to this extended low interest rate environment. They have no place to invest current premiums today in order to cover future claims tomorrow. Combine this with rather liberal underwriting practices, lower than expected lapse ratios and higher than expected claims and the carriers are having problems.

In the past few years, carriers like MetLife and Prudential have exited the individual long-term care market entirely. Other carriers like Transamerica, Genworth, John Hancock and Unum have all raised rates substantially on existing policyholders.

As predicted, two major changes are here to stay: 1- Long-term care (LTC) carriers are bringing new products with sex distinct rates to the market. Simply put, if you are a woman you are paying up to 40% more in premium1. According to the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, the move is designed to better reflect the risks involved in covering women, who are paid two out of every three benefit dollars from long-term-care insurance, in part because they live longer and often have no caregivers at home.

2- Simplified Issue is a thing of the past. All new applications with most carriers will not only include the collection of doctor records but also a paramedical exam and telephone interview. Underwriting guidelines on certain illnesses have also stiffened significantly resulting in many more applicants being denied coverage categorically. For example, an applicant who is currently insulin dependent will be hard pressed to get an offer from any major LTC carrier.

But according to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, an employer cannot discriminate based on gender. One solution for employers is to take a closer look at Multi-Life Group and LTC products which offer unisex rates.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act tried to provide an opportunity for working Americans to purchase LTC coverage under the Community Living Assistance Services and Support Act (Class Act); however the act was repealed on January 1st of 2013. There is still a need for Americans to protect themselves from the rising costs of LTC. So the lesson here is that small employers have a real advantage when it comes to insuring themselves, their families and key employees.

Thanksgiving is It’s the most gut-busting day of the year. Yes, you’re bound to overdo it— especially if Aunt Ginny , your holiday host, favors real butter and cream.

Instead of fighting the desire to overeat, stick to this game plan: Skip the ho-hum fillers like nuts and bread and pile up your plate — only once —with big but still reasonable portions of this truly delicious stuff. Call it the Low(er) Calorie Thanksgiving.

Here are some tips: Wine If the family drives you to drink, choose wine. You can go with white or red (only a 3-5 calorie difference per ounce). But note: red wine offers resveratrol, a healthy antioxidant, in higher amounts.

Turkey Go for skinless breast over thigh; dark meat is higher in saturated fat and calories. gravy Use a soupspoon instead of the spout of that 1950 gravy boat to serve yourself: you’ll use less.

Stuffing If you have the option, choose regular-bread stuffing over cornbread.

Cranberry Sauce A slice should be half an inch—about the thickness of your cell phone.

Sweet potato Do your best to pass if the sweet potatoes are candied or in casseroles which can pack as much as 300 calories per cup.

Pumpkin pie As far as desserts go, it’s a far better choice than pecan. Hold the whipped cream!

5 Ways To Save Money on Thanksgiving Dinner Your food budget is among the most easily controlled of your family’s variable expenses — unless, of course, you’re cooking dinner for two dozen friends and relatives on Thanksgiving.

But don't stress, really. Try these tips for reducing the bill without skimping on the holiday celebration.

1. get an accurate Head Count Thanksgiving leftovers may be a holiday tradition, but cooking too much food comes right out of your wallet. Get an accurate count of who’s coming to dinner, and make a reasonable projection for how much food you’ll need.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.

Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.
