The summer vacation was great and, of course, it was packed with memories that will last for a lifetime.

Meanwhile, back at home, the barbecues, sitting pool side with good friends, family and a cold drink, was relaxing and fun. However, now we come to this: Back To School Time!

Can you believe it?

The breeze at night becomes cooler, fall awaits and so does Back To School shopping. You are probably already starting to hear names like Gap, Abercrombie and J. Crew from your children. Maybe the kids drove you a little crazy at times over the summer, but now you must send them back to school, which can be hard.

No matter if you are preparing your first child for kindergarten, or sending your oldest off to college, make sure you take a good look at them. This is a special time. Don’t be nervous, they will be back, and so will summer.

ick Scarpulla is a renowned speed and strength coach who has worked with dozens of high-level athletes.

We’re talking about Olympians, pro baseball players and Division I college stars. However, as much as Scarpulla enjoys working with the best of the best, he prides himself with empowering every day people and getting them fit.

Rick Scarpulla is a survivor. When he was a junior in high school, Scarpulla was driving his car when he was blindsided by another vehicle. The aftermath of the wreck was so bad that doctors said he died three times. When Scarpulla came back from the other side, he was faced with a difficult decision.

Doctors gave him the option of having his left leg amputated or he could undergo an experimental surgery that would leave him in a wheelchair. Scarpulla went for the surgery and, after years of grueling rehabilitation, he recovered.

“That was a tough time for me, but I never forget it,” said Scarpulla, who serves as the power lifting coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He conducts various cross fit and training seminars around the world and consults several high school teams in Westchester County. “That accident will always be a part of me. It pushes me, motivates me, just like I try to motivate my athletes. I started to coach people because I wanted to help them. That is the most rewarding part of it all.”

In Hollywood, there are trainers to the stars. Here in the Hudson Valley, Scarpulla has become trainer to some of the top local athletes.

Scarpulla has worked with, among others, New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, Wichita State forward Cleanthony Early, who led the Shockers to the Final Four last year, gymnast Sabrina Vega of Carmel, who competed in the 2012 Olympic Trials, and Sleepy Hollow grad Liz Goodwin, who competed for U.S. in skydiving team that won a gold medal at the World Games in China.

Scarpulla’s techniques don’t just resurrect people. They turn around programs. He designed an explosive speed and strength training program for the Haldane football team three years ago and helped the Blue Devils return to Section 1 (Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties) prominence.

Scarpulla’s high school athletes have earned approximately $1million in a variety of athletic and academic college scholarships. His athletes become bigger, faster and stronger. More importantly, they become mentally tough. The results are astounding, whether you want to be a D-I athlete, or an in-shape dad.

Simple Stress Management Techniques It may seem that there’s nothing you can do about stress. The bills won’t stop coming, there will never be more hours in the day, and your career and family responsibilities will always be demanding. But you have more control than you might think. In fact, the simple realization that you’re in control of your life is the foundation of stress management.

Managing stress is all about taking charge.

And, remember, you can handle it!

Here are five tips: 1. Breathe: When you find yourself in a stressful situation, take a deep breath.

Continue doing so until you feel calmer.

2. Get away from the situation or go outside for fresh air: Taking a deep breath of fresh air can do wonders. Go back to the situation when you feel calmer.

3. Learn to let go: The next time you find yourself getting stressed, decide if the matter is really important to you.If it is not, make the conscious choice to ignore the situation.

Heated discussions and anger not only cause stress, but also raise blood pressure levels.

4. Reward yourself: Anytime you’ve had a very stressful day, reward yourself with small pleasures. This can be as simple as a candy bar, a long bath, watching a movie or reading a few chapters of that best seller you haven’t found time to read. By allowing yourself some downtime, it rejuvenates your mind and body, giving you the energy you need to face the next stressful situation.

5. Manage your time: It doesn’t matter what you read in magazines or what the television tells you, the fact remains; you can’t do it all. Learn to prioritize, worry about accomplishing the things you have to do, not the things you think you should do.

Learn to delegate, ask for help when you need it. Pick one thing that has been bugging you and take care of it. Get it out of the way, and move on to the next. As you cross things off your list, your attitude will change and you will feel better and less stressed.

childhood obesity One in three children in the U.S. is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

The good news? Childhood obesity can be prevented. September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.

Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for kids to eat healthier and move more.

Here are five tips to prevent childhood obesity: 1. Get the whole family involved in physical activity by taking a family walk or riding bikes together.

2. Limit fast food intake and plan healthy meals at home.

3. Read nutrition labels and avoid foods that are high in fat, high in sugar or have artificial ingredients.

For example, avoid the empty calories in sugary drinks like soda and juice.

4. Don’t make desserts or unhealthy snacks off limits; this “forbidden fruit� idea will only increase the temptation. Instead, teach children that they can have treats like candy, just in small amounts.

5. Keep healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables on hand.

Learn to accept who you are!

In the honor and words of the great late Ms. Whitney Houston “Learning to love yourself It is the greatest love of all”.

Why am I starting a health and wellness article off with learning to love yourself? Because as we all strive for perfection in our lives along with the quest for the perfect body, we lose sight of what is really important-ME! How can you begin to get your outside body to where you want it to be without first taking care of and loving the inside. There is so much emphasis about being a size 2, looking like a supermodel, bullying starting at a young age if you don’t fit in with the “cool” crowd, that we make ourselves sick, depressed, stressed and angry.

Yes being healthy is important.

Getting healthy the right way is key. You can’t even begin to get on track if you keep saying : I hate myself, I’m disgusting, I’m this, I’m that. NO!—YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL and a wonderful person. We all are unique individuals, none of us look the same, act the same, have the same genes, the same goals—NO ONE. Sure, most of us do not have “the perfect body for what we feel is perfect”, sure some of us are overweight due to one reason or another—that is NOT a reason to hate ourselves for it. Not liking the way you look can motivate you to do something about it, but HATING yourself and putting yourself down will only get you more depressed. Life is too short to be sad, depressed, cranky or unhappy.

Once you decide you are ready (and YOU have to be ready, no one can MAKE you do this or else you will fail) to get your body healthy from the inside out, start by saying—I am going to make a change.

I am going to enhance myself and get healthy. I am doing this for ME because I want to change my eating habits for the better.

I love myself too much to not be happy with the body I am in. I know it will not happen overnight, I know I may never be a size 2, but I will not give up and I will look forward to my results!

This is why I became a PLEXUS Ambassador. I have been all of these things above (the fat kid in school, teased about my weight, hating myself, trying and failing at every diet out there) but I have not given up!

TIPS FOR SENDING YOUR KIDS

OFF TO COLLEGE It's back-to-school season. Or, for some of us, off or back to college. For the first time, your child may be preparing to forgo the comfort of home-cooked meals, a live-in maid (mom) in exchange for communal bathrooms, grueling all-nighters and a new roommate(s).

College has arrived. And with it, a whole slew of new parental dilemmas you never dreamed would sneak up on you so fast. Here are some things parents should expect when you send your kid(s) off to college.

Think about your parting words.

The closing words between parents and children are crucial. Whatever wisdom you have to offer, whether it is ‘I love you,’ ‘I’m behind you,’ ‘I’m proud of you,’ say it. If you can’t express yourself verbally, write your thoughts down and mail the letter to your child immediately after you arrive home.

Your children will remember your messages and hold on to them.

Don’t change your child’s room.

The student’s room is ‘home base’ – try not to change it very much during his or her first semester away.

Freshmen in particular can go through some very difficult times, passing exams, establishing new friendships, surviving in a setting where they are not ‘top dog,’ and often fearing that admissions has made a mistake — that they do not really belong at college.

Give them a ’safe haven.

Your lives will change.

Younger siblings may be quite happy to see the older child leave home. I’ve heard stories of younger children who usually have stayed in their rooms suddenly appearing at the dinner table. If the college-bound student is your youngest, you’ll begin to reestablish a one-on-one relationship with your spouse after years of parenting.

When a problem arises, “move like your feet are stuck in molasses.”

The temptation is to intervene when a child calls home with a problem. Remember that many resources exist at college to help students cope with various situations. Express support, but give your children time to solve their own problems—it will ultimately benefit them. Colleges have many safety nets, including resident advisers who are trained to identify and handle just about any problem.

You won’t be able to wait for them to come home — or leave.

Your child will arrive home with a whole new set of habits, particularly when it comes to food and sleep.

When my daughter came home from college for the first time she decided to call her friend at 10:30 p.m. one evening. When I expressed surprise, she said, ‘Oh, I know it’s early, but I want to catch her before she makes plans with someone else.

Don’t expect the same grades in college that the students got in high school.

Perfect 4.0’s (or higher, with AP grades) are commonplace in high school. Very few students make it through a challenging and varied college curriculum with a perfect 4.0. At Emory, for example, there might be only one or two out of a graduating class of 1100+. Expect early GPA’s to be low and later ones to be better.

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital ranked one of the best in U.S. Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report in its 2013-14 Best Children’s Hospital rankings. The hospital was cited by the magazine in the neonatology and pediatric gastroenterology/GI surgery specialty areas.

“Of 179 children’s hospitals, surveyed Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center was one of only 87 children’s hospitals in the nation to be recognized by U.S. News. This ranking is further affirmation of the high level of expert care provided by Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital to the children of our region and beyond,” said Michael Gewitz, M.D., Physician-in-Chief, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center.

“Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center deserves high praise,” said Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “Ranking shows the dedication

and expertise that Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital brings to the care of children who need those qualities the most. We think it is important to identify and call attention to pediatric centers like this one.”

Families from the region and beyond come to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center for the care of their seriously ill or injured children.

The hospital is home to the area’s Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU), which carries a Level IV designation by the New York State Department of Health.

This means the RNICU at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is capable of caring for the area’s tiniest and sickest newborns, who are transferred to the unit from community hospitals in the Hudson Valley as well as parts of Connecticut and New York City. Despite having one of the highest acuity neonatal rates in all of New York State, the hospital’s Division of Newborn Medicine has success rates for higher

survival and less morbidities better than national standards.

The hospital’s Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition cares for children with digestive problems, liver disease and nutritional disorders. In addition to general pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition and hepatology services, the division collaborates on patient care with Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital’s exceptional pediatric surgery team, which has the most comprehensive and advanced pediatric minimallyinvasive surgery program in the region. The division also works with Westchester Medical Center’s dynamic liver surgery and transplant team, whose doctors have success rates well above national averages.

Packing Lunches Pack just the amount of perishable food that can be eaten at lunchtime. That way, there won’t be a problem about the storage or safety of leftovers. After lunch, discard all leftover food, used food packaging, and paper bags. Do not reuse packaging because it could contaminate other food and cause foodborne illness. It’s fine to prepare the food the night before, but pack lunch bags right before leaving home.

Keeping Cold Lunches Cold Prepare cooked food, such as turkey, ham, chicken, and vegetable or pasta salads, ahead of time to allow for thorough chilling in the refrigerator [40 °F (4.4 °C) or below]. Divide large amounts of food into shallow containers for fast chilling. Keep cooked food refrigerated until time to leave home. To keep lunches cold away from home, include at least two cold sources. Some food is safe without a cold source. Items that don’t require refrigeration include whole fruits and vegetables, hard cheese, canned meat and fish, chips, breads, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, mustard, and pickles.

Keeping Hot Lunches Hot Use an insulated container to keep food like soup, chili, and stew hot. Fill the container with boiling water, let stand for a few minutes, empty, and then put in the piping hot food. Keep the insulated container closed until lunchtime to keep the food hot — 140 °F (73.9 °C) or above.

Microwave Cooking/Reheating When using the microwave oven to reheat lunches, cover food to hold in moisture and promote safe, even heating. Reheat leftovers to at least 165 °F (73.9 °C), making sure to use a food thermometer to be sure a safe temperature has been reached before consuming the food.

Whether it’s off to school or work, millions of Americans carry “bag” lunches. Food brought from home can be kept safe if it is first handled and cooked properly. Then, perishable food must be kept cold while commuting via bus, bicycle, on foot, in a car, or on the subway. After arriving at school or work, perishable food must be kept cold until lunchtime.

Begin with Safe Food Perishable food (refrigerated), including meat, poultry and eggs, must be kept cold at all times. Eggs should be purchased cold at the store and kept cold at home. In between store and home, transport perishable food as fast as possible when no ice source is available. At home, refrigerate perishables promptly.

Keep Everything Clean Before beginning to pack lunches, make sure to wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and countertops with hot, soapy water after preparing each food item and before you go on to the next item.

Don’t Cross-Contaminate Harmful bacteria can spread throughout the kitchen and get onto cutting boards, utensils, and countertops. Always use a clean cutting board. When using a cutting board for food that will not be cooked, such as bread, lettuce, and tomatoes, be sure to wash the board after using it to cut raw meat and poultry. Consider using one cutting board for fresh produce and a separate one for meat and poultry.

He is a federally registered Civil Surgeon authorized to perform immigration physicals, a certified Medical Examiner for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, as well as an authorized Yellow Fever vaccine provider. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College, CUNY and his Medical Doctorate from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. George J. DiRago, MD, is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He is trained in anesthesiology and has served as a Clinical Instructor in Anesthesiology. Dr. DiRago received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and his Medical Doctorate from Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C. He served with the United States Navy at Key West Naval Hospital and Philadelphia Naval Hospital. He also spent 2½ years training in physiatry and non-operative orthopedics and neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and Temple University Hospital, both in Philadelphia, PA. What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.
