After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 1241 Mamaroneck Ave. right here in White Plains, NY who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

The summer vacation was great and, of course, it was packed with memories that will last for a lifetime. Meanwhile, back at home, the barbecues, sitting pool side with good friends, family and a cold drink, was relaxing and fun. However, now we come to this: Back To School Time! Can you believe it? The breeze at night becomes cooler, fall awaits and so does Back To School shopping. You are probably already starting to hear names like Gap, Abercrombie and J. Crew from your children. Maybe the kids drove you a little crazy at times over the summer, but now you must send them back to school, which can be hard. No matter if you are preparing your first child for kindergarten, or sending your oldest off to college, make sure you take a good look at them. This is a special time. Don’t be nervous, they will be back, and so will summer. For now, Healthcare News would like to wish you and your family a great school year! As always we welcome your ideas and news! 30 fruits & vegetables
ways to get the most out of your
Not only are fruits and vegetables healthy, for the most part, they are affordable.
September is National Fruits & Veggies Month, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are many ways to benefit from eating fruits and vegetables without breaking your budget. Eating fruits and vegetables are part of a healthful diet that includes whole grains, lean meats and beans, and fat-free or low-fat milk products.

1
Calculate an appropriate Healthy Food Budget for your family, based on USDA’s Low-Cost Food Plan. This easy-to-use calculator, offered by Iowa State University Extension, helps to create a budget for what is a reasonable amount to spend to feed your family.
2
Cook enough for several meals and freeze leftovers. Place enough food for 1-2 meals in each container.
3
Create a meal plan for the week that uses similar fruits and vegetables, prepared in different ways. Make the most out of the produce that you buy.
4
Buy fruits and vegetables in season at farmers’ markets or at your local grocery store.
5 Grow your own vegetables.
Invest a little in seeds, and get a lot of vegetables in return. Try indoor pots or greenhouse growing for the cooler months.
6 Mix it yourself. 100 percent
juice from frozen concentrate is often less expensive per serving than pre-bottled juice.
7 Minimize waste, by buying only
the amounts your family will eat.
8
Learn basic food math. Taking the time to make a food budget before grocery trips can make food buying decisions easier. Simple food math can help you decide if the watermelon or the bunch of grapes is a better buy.
9 Dried fruit lasts for a long time,
but can be expensive. Buy in bulk with friends and share the cost.
10 Frozen fruit and vegetables
store well in the freezer until you’re ready to add them to a meal.

11Homemade soup is a healthy and tasty way to use vegetables. Make a big batch and freeze leftovers in small lunch-size containers.
12 Look for sales and deals on
fruits & vegetables at the grocery store or through coupons.
13 Cut your fruits and vegetables
at home. Pre-cut produce can cost much more than whole fruits and vegetables.
14 Don’t shop hungry. Eat a
healthy snack, such as an apple, before going to the grocery store so that you stick to your budget and avoid spending money on less healthy temptations.
15 Maximize your time and
money. Cut coupons for foods, such as fruits and vegetables, only on your grocery list.
16 Canned fruits and vegetables will last a long time and can be a healthy addition to a variety of meals. Choose canned vegetables that have no added salt and fruit that is canned in 100% fruit juice.
17 Enjoy the comforts of home
20 Store-brands can be a great budget choice for many forms of fruits and vegetables.
21 WIC (Women, Infants, and
Children) and Senior Farmers Market coupons can be used by participanting markets.

vegetables, buy in small amounts. Taste test before you change your grocery list.
23 Keep it simple. Buy dried
beans, peas, and lentils in their raw or uncooked form instead of the processed and packaged versions which cost more.
24 Avoid buying single servings.
Purchasing many small packages of produce is often more expensive than buying in larger amounts.
25 Shop at discount grocery
stores for good deals on fruits and vegetables, especially canned.

ick Scarpulla is a renowned speed and strength coach who has worked with dozens of high-level athletes. We’re talking about Olympians, pro baseball players and Division I college stars. However, as much as Scarpulla enjoys working with the best of the best, he prides himself with empowering every day people and getting them fit. The mom trying to lose that baby weight. The father trying to lose those love handles and get back in shape. Bottom line: Rick Scarpulla gets results. But his workouts come with a disclaimer: This isn’t going to be easy. In fact, the workouts might hurt. But you will like what you see in the mirror after a few weeks with Scarpulla. Athletes and average people from Westchester and Putnam counties flock to his gym - Ultimate Advantage - in Orange County. Scarpulla is planning on opening another gym in Westchester County later this year and conducts seminars in Westchester. He won’t only arrive with a great resume, Scarpulla has a wonderful story to tell. When one of his athletes or clients tell Scarpulla they’ve had enough, they are tired and banged up, he encourages them to push on. For sure, Rick Scarpulla knows something about perseverance. Rick Scarpulla is a survivor. When he was a junior in high school, Scarpulla was driving his car when he was blindsided by another vehicle. The aftermath of the wreck was so bad that doctors said he died three times. When Scarpulla came back from the other side, he was faced with a difficult decision. Doctors gave him the option of having his left leg amputated or he could undergo an experimental surgery that would leave him in a wheelchair. Scarpulla went for the surgery and, after years of grueling rehabilitation, he recovered. “That was a tough time for me, but I never forget it,” said Scarpulla, who serves as the power lifting coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He conducts various cross fit and training seminars around the world and consults several high school teams in Westchester County. “That accident will always be a part of me. It pushes me, motivates me, just like I try to motivate my athletes. I started to coach people because I wanted to help them. That is the most rewarding part of it all.”
Top trainer Rick Scarpulla knows something about adversity and gets results: Period!
In Hollywood, there are trainers to the stars. Here in the Hudson Valley, Scarpulla has become trainer to some of the top local athletes. Scarpulla has worked with, among others, New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, Wichita State forward Cleanthony Early, who led the Shockers to the Final Four last year, gymnast Sabrina Vega of Carmel, who competed in the 2012 Olympic Trials, and Sleepy Hollow grad Liz Goodwin, who competed for U.S. in skydiving team that won a gold medal at the World Games in China. Scarpulla’s techniques don’t just resurrect people. They turn around programs. He designed an explosive speed and strength training program for the Haldane football team three years ago and helped the Blue Devils return to Section 1 (Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties) prominence. Scarpulla’s high school athletes have earned approximately $1million in a variety of athletic and academic college scholarships. His athletes become bigger, faster and stronger. More importantly, they become mentally tough. The results are astounding, whether you want to be a D-I athlete, or an in-shape dad. Scarpulla can come with a tailor-made regimen for anyone.
After his car accident in Florida, where he grew up, Scarpulla spent 18 months transitioning from a wheelchair, to crutches, to a cane. When he was strong enough to walk on his own, he desired only one thing: “To get strong,” Scarpulla said. In time, Scarpulla did. In the process, he developed a passion, training, pushing and caring for his clients. Scarpulla developed the Ultimate Athlete Training Program, which uses a variety of nonstandard training styles to build strength, agility and faster reaction times. Thirty years later, he’s still tweaking it, improving it. Indeed, Scarpulla has come a long way. And, in every athlete, every client, he sees a little of himself. Every person who steps in his gym possess the desire to achieve and Scarpulla gets all of them to the plateau, in part, by using his own experience. Ultimate Advantage Training Center, 914-443-1110. www.myultimateadvantage.com. E-mail: rick@myultimateadvantage.com. Coming to Westchester County soon.

Simple Stress Management Techniques It may seem that there’s nothing you can do about stress. The bills won’t stop coming, there will never be more hours in the day, and your career and family responsibilities will always be demanding. But you have more control than you might think. In fact, the simple realization that you’re in control of your life is the foundation of stress management. Managing stress is all about taking charge. And, remember, you can handle it!
Here are five tips: 1. Breathe: When you find yourself in a stressful situation, take a deep breath. Continue doing so until you feel calmer. 2. Get away from the situation or go outside for fresh air: Taking a deep breath of fresh air can do wonders. Go back to the situation when you feel calmer. 3. Learn to let go: The next time you find yourself getting stressed, decide if the matter is really important to you.If it is not, make the conscious choice to ignore the situation. Heated discussions and anger not only cause stress, but also raise blood pressure levels. 4. Reward yourself: Anytime you’ve had a very stressful day, reward yourself with small pleasures. This can be as simple as a candy bar, a long bath, watching a movie or reading a few chapters of that best seller you haven’t found time to read. By allowing yourself some downtime, it rejuvenates your mind and body, giving you the energy you need to face the next stressful situation. 5. Manage your time: It doesn’t matter what you read in magazines or what the television tells you, the fact remains; you can’t do it all. Learn to prioritize, worry about accomplishing the things you have to do, not the things you think you should do. Learn to delegate, ask for help when you need it. Pick one thing that has been bugging you and take care of it. Get it out of the way, and move on to the next. As you cross things off your list, your attitude will change and you will feel better and less stressed.

The Importance of Elder Law: You must protect your assets, family and future now! For nearly 30 years, practicing law has been Ely Rosenzveig’s passion. His inspiration? That comes from, among other things, his life experiences, the people he has met, and the clients he works with every day. The widow who didn’t have a will and was concerned about her financial future. The family that was reeling from health issues impacting their elderly loved ones without any planning in place to address their needs, leaving them with the prospect of exorbitantly expensive care needs. Ely Rosenzveig was a rabbi in Westchester County. The plight of some in his congregation moved him to practice elder law and trust and estate planning. He would become a senior partner at one of the foremost elder law firms in the country, but left to join hands with his son, Ariel. “I really jumped at the opportunity to work in this area of law,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “I think it’s special kind of work. To help people and work with your son is incredibly rewarding. Ariel is a great asset – a wonderful and gifted young attorney.” The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. in White Plains practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and
estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the zealous advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. Appropriate estate and Medicaid planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. “People don’t want to talk about illness and death,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. ““It’s a tough subject. People are reluctant, but the type of measures that we implement for our clients can save them and their loved ones a lot of money. Proper planning will help provide financial and emotional security for all involved.”
The firm is very experienced in making sure that those eligible for Medicaid and Medicare get the benefits they deserve. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. has been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired, a dynamic only exacerbated with the passage of the Deficit reduction Act of 2006, and the new rules regarding the look-back requirements, and penalty period calculations for non-Medicaid exempt asset transfers. The firm has achieved remarkable results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided. No matter what the case, Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. prides itself on working with each client individually, catering to each one’s diverse needs. Estate planning should begin at a young age with a will, health care proxy, living
will and durable power of attorney. As you grow older and accumulate assets, it is especially important that you speak with an experience elder law attorney issues pertaining to issues concerning Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and further estate planning. Elder law is about more than just saving money. When viewed properly, elder law is about two major things: First, ensuring that your personal wishes — financial, medical, and legal — are carried out; and second, understanding that elder law is a family matter affecting an intricate web of individual relationships. Knowing that your potential long-term care needs have already been addressed frees you and your family from needless worry. And Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig are there to help their cherished clients every step of the way. “We want every client to feel like they are our only client,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “We are totally committed to ensuring that we be fully responsive to our clients’ every need. For us, this is tremendously rewarding. It is the very reason why we have become elder law attorneys.”

Preventing
childhood obesity One in three children in the U.S. is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. The good news? Childhood obesity can be prevented. September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for kids to eat healthier and move more. Here are five tips to prevent childhood obesity: 1. Get the whole family involved in physical activity by taking a family walk or riding bikes together. 2. Limit fast food intake and plan healthy meals at home. 3. Read nutrition labels and avoid foods that are high in fat, high in sugar or have artificial ingredients. For example, avoid the empty calories in sugary drinks like soda and juice. 4. Don’t make desserts or unhealthy snacks off limits; this “forbidden fruit idea will only increase the temptation. Instead, teach children that they can have treats like candy, just in small amounts. 5. Keep healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables on hand.

Learn to accept who you are! In the honor and words of the great late Ms. Whitney Houston “Learning to love yourself It is the greatest love of all”. Why am I starting a health and wellness article off with learning to love yourself? Because as we all strive for perfection in our lives along with the quest for the perfect body, we lose sight of what is really important-ME! How can you begin to get your outside body to where you want it to be without first taking care of and loving the inside. There is so much emphasis about being a size 2, looking like a supermodel, bullying starting at a young age if you don’t fit in with the “cool” crowd, that we make ourselves sick, depressed, stressed and angry. Yes being healthy is important. Getting healthy the right way is key. You can’t even begin to get on track if you keep saying : I hate myself, I’m disgusting, I’m this, I’m that. NO!—YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL and a wonderful person. We all are unique individuals, none of us look the same, act the same, have the same genes, the same goals—NO ONE. Sure, most of us do not have “the perfect body for what we feel is perfect”, sure some of us are overweight due to one reason or another—that is NOT a reason to hate ourselves for it. Not liking the way you look can motivate you to do something about it, but HATING yourself and putting yourself down will only get you more depressed. Life is too short to be sad, depressed, cranky or unhappy. Once you decide you are ready (and YOU have to be ready, no one can MAKE you do this or else you will fail) to get your body healthy from the inside out, start by saying—I am going to make a change. I am going to enhance myself and get healthy. I am doing this for ME because I want to change my eating habits for the better.
I love myself too much to not be happy with the body I am in. I know it will not happen overnight, I know I may never be a size 2, but I will not give up and I will look forward to my results! This is why I became a PLEXUS Ambassador. I have been all of these things above (the fat kid in school, teased about my weight, hating myself, trying and failing at every diet out there) but I have not given up! PLEXUS has helped me get healthy and lose most of the weight I wanted. I still have a ways to go but I am not beating myself up over it. It will happen when my body says it will happen. I am just excited to fit into clothes that I haven’t been able to wear for 7 years. I joined PLEXUS to help others like myself achieve their goals without the restrictive diet plans (I like food too much to live on shakes , bars or rabbit food). I am a people person and as much as I am a “salesperson”, I want to know
who my customers are. I want to know what your goals are, what your concerns and questions are, what you have tried in the past, everything about you. I am not looking to sell you a product, I am looking to help you get healthy. Several customers are now my friends because they allowed me in to learn who they are, who their families are and they see that I care about them as a person, not about money or how long I can keep them buying the products. I just got artwork last week from the 2 daughters of a client as a thank you because I brought them some frozen fruit showing them how that can be a much better choice than candy. That artwork is proudly displayed on my refrigerator as a reminder to me why I do this – it’s for the people, not the money. I hope that I can help you get healthy to. Please feel free to contact me and let me get you started on your journey to healthy weight loss.

TIPS FOR SENDING YOUR KIDS
OFF TO COLLEGE It's back-to-school season. Or, for some of us, off or back to college. For the first time, your child may be preparing to forgo the comfort of home-cooked meals, a live-in maid (mom) in exchange for communal bathrooms, grueling all-nighters and a new roommate(s). College has arrived. And with it, a whole slew of new parental dilemmas you never dreamed would sneak up on you so fast. Here are some things parents should expect when you send your kid(s) off to college. Think about your parting words. The closing words between parents and children are crucial. Whatever wisdom you have to offer, whether it is ‘I love you,’ ‘I’m behind you,’ ‘I’m proud of you,’ say it. If you can’t express yourself verbally, write your thoughts down and mail the letter to your child immediately after you arrive home. Your children will remember your messages and hold on to them. Don’t change your child’s room. The student’s room is ‘home base’ – try not to change it very much during his or her first semester away. Freshmen in particular can go through some very difficult times, passing exams, establishing new friendships, surviving in a setting where they are not ‘top dog,’ and often fearing that admissions has made a mistake — that they do not really belong at college. Give them a ’safe haven.
Your lives will change. Younger siblings may be quite happy to see the older child leave home. I’ve heard stories of younger children who usually have stayed in their rooms suddenly appearing at the dinner table. If the college-bound student is your youngest, you’ll begin to reestablish a one-on-one relationship with your spouse after years of parenting. When a problem arises, “move like your feet are stuck in molasses.” The temptation is to intervene when a child calls home with a problem. Remember that many resources exist at college to help students cope with various situations. Express support, but give your children time to solve their own problems—it will ultimately benefit them. Colleges have many safety nets, including resident advisers who are trained to identify and handle just about any problem.
You won’t be able to wait for them to come home — or leave. Your child will arrive home with a whole new set of habits, particularly when it comes to food and sleep. When my daughter came home from college for the first time she decided to call her friend at 10:30 p.m. one evening. When I expressed surprise, she said, ‘Oh, I know it’s early, but I want to catch her before she makes plans with someone else. Don’t expect the same grades in college that the students got in high school. Perfect 4.0’s (or higher, with AP grades) are commonplace in high school. Very few students make it through a challenging and varied college curriculum with a perfect 4.0. At Emory, for example, there might be only one or two out of a graduating class of 1100+. Expect early GPA’s to be low and later ones to be better.

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital ranked one of the best in U.S. Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report in its 2013-14 Best Children’s Hospital rankings. The hospital was cited by the magazine in the neonatology and pediatric gastroenterology/GI surgery specialty areas. “Of 179 children’s hospitals, surveyed Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center was one of only 87 children’s hospitals in the nation to be recognized by U.S. News. This ranking is further affirmation of the high level of expert care provided by Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital to the children of our region and beyond,” said Michael Gewitz, M.D., Physician-in-Chief, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. “Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center deserves high praise,” said Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “Ranking shows the dedication
and expertise that Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital brings to the care of children who need those qualities the most. We think it is important to identify and call attention to pediatric centers like this one.” Families from the region and beyond come to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center for the care of their seriously ill or injured children. The hospital is home to the area’s Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU), which carries a Level IV designation by the New York State Department of Health. This means the RNICU at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is capable of caring for the area’s tiniest and sickest newborns, who are transferred to the unit from community hospitals in the Hudson Valley as well as parts of Connecticut and New York City. Despite having one of the highest acuity neonatal rates in all of New York State, the hospital’s Division of Newborn Medicine has success rates for higher
survival and less morbidities better than national standards. The hospital’s Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition cares for children with digestive problems, liver disease and nutritional disorders. In addition to general pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition and hepatology services, the division collaborates on patient care with Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital’s exceptional pediatric surgery team, which has the most comprehensive and advanced pediatric minimallyinvasive surgery program in the region. The division also works with Westchester Medical Center’s dynamic liver surgery and transplant team, whose doctors have success rates well above national averages.

Packing Lunches Pack just the amount of perishable food that can be eaten at lunchtime. That way, there won’t be a problem about the storage or safety of leftovers. After lunch, discard all leftover food, used food packaging, and paper bags. Do not reuse packaging because it could contaminate other food and cause foodborne illness. It’s fine to prepare the food the night before, but pack lunch bags right before leaving home. Keeping Cold Lunches Cold Prepare cooked food, such as turkey, ham, chicken, and vegetable or pasta salads, ahead of time to allow for thorough chilling in the refrigerator [40 °F (4.4 °C) or below]. Divide large amounts of food into shallow containers for fast chilling. Keep cooked food refrigerated until time to leave home. To keep lunches cold away from home, include at least two cold sources. Some food is safe without a cold source. Items that don’t require refrigeration include whole fruits and vegetables, hard cheese, canned meat and fish, chips, breads, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, mustard, and pickles. Keeping Hot Lunches Hot Use an insulated container to keep food like soup, chili, and stew hot. Fill the container with boiling water, let stand for a few minutes, empty, and then put in the piping hot food. Keep the insulated container closed until lunchtime to keep the food hot — 140 °F (73.9 °C) or above.
Keeping lunches safe
Microwave Cooking/Reheating When using the microwave oven to reheat lunches, cover food to hold in moisture and promote safe, even heating. Reheat leftovers to at least 165 °F (73.9 °C), making sure to use a food thermometer to be sure a safe temperature has been reached before consuming the food. Cook frozen convenience meals according to package instructions.

Whether it’s off to school or work, millions of Americans carry “bag” lunches. Food brought from home can be kept safe if it is first handled and cooked properly. Then, perishable food must be kept cold while commuting via bus, bicycle, on foot, in a car, or on the subway. After arriving at school or work, perishable food must be kept cold until lunchtime. Begin with Safe Food Perishable food (refrigerated), including meat, poultry and eggs, must be kept cold at all times. Eggs should be purchased cold at the store and kept cold at home. In between store and home, transport perishable food as fast as possible when no ice source is available. At home, refrigerate perishables promptly. Keep Everything Clean Before beginning to pack lunches, make sure to wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and countertops with hot, soapy water after preparing each food item and before you go on to the next item. Don’t Cross-Contaminate Harmful bacteria can spread throughout the kitchen and get onto cutting boards, utensils, and countertops. Always use a clean cutting board. When using a cutting board for food that will not be cooked, such as bread, lettuce, and tomatoes, be sure to wash the board after using it to cut raw meat and poultry. Consider using one cutting board for fresh produce and a separate one for meat and poultry.

Backpack safety You may think it looks cool to sling your backpack onto one shoulder, but how cool will you look slumped over? If backpacks aren’t used right, they can hurt your back, your posture, and even make your hands tingle. And backpack troubles can be a greater risk for girls. That’s because boys in their grade may be bigger, so their bodies suffer less pressure from the same amount of books. Follow a few rules and your pack will be less of a pain in the neck — and back and shoulders! Make sure your loaded pack doesn’t weigh more than around 15 percent of what you weigh. Load the heaviest items closer to your back.

If necessary, take some books out and carry them in your hands. Get a pack with padded straps. Wear both straps to keep the weight even on both sides. Tighten the straps so the pack is close to your body. Make sure the pack doesn’t hang down more than two inches below your waist. You might want to get help from an adult to check on your pack.

Studies have shown that children who eat healthful, balanced breakfasts and lunches are more alert throughout the school day and earn higher grades than those who have an unhealthy diet. Making food choices for a healthy lifestyle for you and your child can be as simple as using these tips. Use the ideas in this list to balance your calories, to choose foods to eat more often, and to cut back on foods to eat less often.
Back to School nutrition tips Balance Calories: Find out how many calories you need for a day as a first step in managing your weight. Go to www.ChooseMyPlate.gov to find your calorie level. Being physically active also helps you balance calories. Enjoy Your Food, But Eat Less: Take the time to fully enjoy your food as you eat it. Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues before, during, and after meals.
Make Half Your Plate Fruits and Vegetables: Choose red, orange, and dark-green vegetables like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, along with other vegetables for your meals. Add fruit to meals as part of main or side dishes or dessert.
Make Half Your Grains Whole Grains: To eat more whole grains, substitute a whole-grain product for a refined product—such as eating whole-wheat bread instead of white bread or brown rice instead of white rice.
Compare Sodium in Foods: Use the Nutrition Facts label to choose lower sodium versions of foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals. Select canned foods labeled "low sodium," "reduced sodium," or "no salt added."
Foods to Eat Less Often: Cut back on foods high in solid fats, added sugars, and salt. They include cakes, cookies, ice cream, candies, sweetened drinks, pizza, and fatty meats like ribs, sausages, bacon, and hot dogs.
Expanding our family to care for yours
Avoid Oversized Portions: Use a smaller plate, bowl, and glass. Portion out foods before you eat. When eating out, choose a smaller size option. Switch to Fat-Free or Low-Fat (1%) Milk: They have the same amount of calcium and essential nutrients as whole milk, but fewer calories and less saturated fat. Foods to Eat More Often: Eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fat-free or 1% milk and dairy products. These foods have the nutrients you need for health—including potassium, calcium, vitamin D, and fiber.

LIFE INSURANCE WITH NO MEDICAL UNDERWRITING Are you looking for additional life insurance coverage…? Would you like to be able to purchase up to $2,000,000 of permanent life insurance with no medical underwriting…? Sounds too good to be true…? Well it is not, provided you already have coverage in force. Many folks today want more life insurance to protect their families and their business interests, but do not want to go through the inconvenience of the full underwriting process. This process can include a lengthy application, full financial disclosure, blood & urine screening, a paramedical exam, an EKG exam and the release of all medical records. Some people just do not have the time or the interest to go through all this for whatever reasons… others are just plain scared of needles...! Either way, this process which can take months to complete can be easily avoided. This Rapid App program is offered by Guardian Life Insurance Company, one of the highest rated carriers in the industry. The carrier will match up to 2X the death benefit of any existing life insurance policy that you have purchased in the last (4) years. The application process is extremely simple and policies are issued in weeks rather than months. Both Whole Life and Universal Life insurance policies are offered. It is important to note that clients must be between the ages of 20-60 and must have been approved standard or better. In addition, Waiver of Premium is available. The Disability Waiver of Premium rider, when attached to an eligible life insurance policy, helps you continue your policy’s coverage during disability. It does so by waiving the premiums on a policy when the insured has suffered from a debilitating disability that has lasted for at least six months. What are the eligibility criteria? ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢
Insurance policies must be fully underwritten within the last four years. Program is open to individuals with life insurance policies from an approved carrier list of 99 companies. Policy must not have been issued as a result of reinsurance. Risk class must be standard or better with no flat extras. Insured must be between the ages of 20 and 60. Policies must be placed and in force.
You are never going to be any younger or any healthier than you are right now. If you have purchased life insurance recently and feel you need more, do not delay. The dish on diets Choose, or shall we way, chews wisely As it turns out, when your wife tells you she is full after just a bite of dessert, she isn’t totally lying. A recent study revealed that if you indulge in a little and put the rest away, the craving will pass after about 15 minutes. How does the saying go? Out-of-sight, out-of-mind. OK, so now for the million dollar question: Define “a little.” Researchers say it’s about a quarter of a chocolate bar. Let that portion be your guide, as hard as it may be. Good luck, you can do it.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain? As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
