Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute receives American College of Cardiology Award for Cardiac Care Atlantic Health System’s Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown and Overlook medical centers has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2014. Morristown and Overlook were the only hospitals in New Jersey and two of 256 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor.

The award recognizes Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center have reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the ACTION Registry– GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award, Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG Pre-

mier for eight consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90 percent for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

“The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association commend both Morristown and Overlook medical centers for their success in implementing standards of care and protocols. The full implementation of acute and secondary prevention guideline-recommended therapy is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients,” said James Jollis, MD, FACC, ACTION Registry-GWTG Chair and Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Duke University Hospital.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that over 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year.

A heart attack occurs when a blood

clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

“This award is a proud achievement for Atlantic Health System. It reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff who care for some of our most seriously ill patients and their families,” said Linda Gillam, MD, MPH, FACC, Dorothy and Lloyd Huck Chair, Cardiovascular Medicine, Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute. “The implementation of these guidelines requires successful coordination of the cardiovascular team and emergency personnel and is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients.”

ACTION Registry–GWTG is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association with

partnering support from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. ACTION Registry-GWTG empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients.

The American College of Cardiology is a 47,000-member medical society that serves as the professional home for the entire cardiovascular care team. The mission of the College is to transform cardiovascular care and to improve heart health. The College operates national registries to measure and improve care. While my experience at the other hospital was good, I found the care and facilities at Chilton to be exemplary.”

“I was treated spectacularly,” continued Kafafian. “Chilton’s staff and nurses were caring and constantly available to make me as comfortable as possible. It took seconds for someone to respond to my call button, and they checked on me throughout the

day… asking if I was okay, how the food was, if I needed anything.”

“Those little things make a difference,” he noted. “Chilton really made me feel special.”

Furthermore, Kafafian was genuinely amazed by his swift recovery.

It took nearly twice as long for him to fully recover from his past conventional knee replacement surgery.

Back in the Game Customized knee replacement restores active lifestyle In his glory days, you’d probably find Glen Rock resident Don Kafafian playing football, baseball – or perhaps even jumping out of a plane. Today, at 67 years of age, he keeps his feet on the ground, but this former linebacker and army veteran is still in the game. Now an avid golfer and fitness enthusiast, he works out four days a week and hits the links every chance he gets.

What a difference a few months – and a single surgery – can make.

Earlier this year, Kafafian’s right knee was so degraded, from excessive wear-and-tear and osteoarthritis, that he could barely walk. The joint cartilage had deteriorated to the point that he could feel and hear his bones rubbing together. He lived in constant pain. “My knee was always on the verge of collapse,” he said. “I could not take a step without something to grasp. I nearly fell down the stairs… and was afraid to pick up my new granddaughter.”

When other therapies failed, Kafafian knew it was time to consider total joint replacement. His left knee was replaced in 2002, so he was aware of the life-changing benefits – as well as the extensive recovery. He delayed a second surgery as long as possible, but eventually that became the only desirable option. “It wasn’t about my knee anymore; it was about my quality of life,” he asserted.

Last spring, Kafafian consulted with his long-time orthopedic surgeon, Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS, who recommended a groundbreaking procedure he pioneered at Chilton Medical Center.

Chilton’s Total Joint Center is among the first medical facilities in the region – to offer customized knee replacement using patient specific instrumentation. According to Dr. Kayal, this cutting-edge technique represents a major advancement in knee replacement surgery. For the first time, surgeons can provide patients with a new joint that is customfitted to their anatomy.

Customized knee replacement begins long before patients enter the operating room. In fact, that is the key to success. Weeks before surgery, MRI imaging and specialized computer technology are combined to generate a 3D model of the patient’s joint. In turn, this model is utilized to create a customized, one-of-a-kind surgical tool exclusively dedicated to that patient – and that particular joint. Tailored to the knee’s size, dimensions and orientation, the tool acts as a cutting guide, allowing the surgeon to precisely position the implant while removing less bone in the process.

“I was excited when Dr. Kayal told me about this option,” said Kafafian.

He was also intrigued by the procedure’s additional benefits as reported by other patients, including reduced trauma, less blood loss, less post-operative pain and faster healing.

Kafafian’s customized knee replacement was performed in May 2014 at Chilton Medical Center. “I was initially apprehensive when Dr. Kayal recommended Chilton, since my previous operation was done at another hospital,” he admitted. “But I trusted Dr. Kayal and I’m glad I did.

Emergency Medical Associates (EMA) has experienced another year of growth in 2014, signing three new contracts and increasing its number of annual emergency department patient visits by 258,000 visits.

In 2014, Emergency Medical Associates began providing emergency department management services to Newark (N.J.) Beth Israel Medical Center, New York Hospital Queens, and The Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, Pa. Due to this growth, EMA now staffs and manages 30 emergency departments in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. This growth has increased the company’s annual number of ED patient visits to more than 1.5 million.

Additionally, the company’s hospitalist medicine division, Inpatient Medical Associates, added three new contracts and nearly 50,000 inpatient visits in 2014, while its urgent care staffing and management division

expects to treat more than 58,000 patients by year’s end.

Sterile Processing Certification for a More Certain Future Patient safety and infection prevention have always been priorities for healthcare providers. However, because of today’s disease reporting requirements, high-profile outbreaks, increased transparency, and liability for contributing to infection rates, the importance of ensuring best practices for sterile processing is more vital than ever.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 25 patients will contract a preventable healthcareassociated infection (HAI) during their hospital stay—a surprisingly high number. The good news is that many of these infections can be prevented with a dependable sterile processing program, one that includes strict compliance with evidence-based practices and the manufacturer’s most current guidelines, backed by C-suite advocacy for reducing HAIs. So what localized efforts can we as healthcare providers use to ensure that we’re delivering the highest quality care to our patients? Even hospitals that have the best sterile processing practices face challenges, such as high surgery volume, undertrained staff, and insufficient inventory/sterile processing capacity. What’s more, the current lack of standardization is a large contributor to those challenges because it complicates existing processes and the way employees are expected to function as part of a cohesive department.

As of January 1, New Jersey and New York require certification of central sterile staff, and other states are following that lead. Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania are already looking to put similar legislation into effect. Certification ensures that staff is fully apprised of the latest infection control techniques for disease prevention, have a fundamental knowledge of microbiology, and understand the importance of their role in supporting clinical counterparts, such as the OR, endoscopy centers, diagnostic radiology centers, and ambulatory surgery facilities.

Sterile processing directly impacts patient safety as well as physician satisfaction, and thus greatly affects facility-wide costs. All departments should be engaged and expected to comply with standardized processes. Addressing wasteful, inefficient, unsafe workflow and sterilization processes can result in meaningful returns both inside and outside of the operating suite. The likelihood of reliable compliance with set infection prevention procedures increases when processes are clear, practical, and adequately supervised, with necessary supplies readily available. Arming our sterile processing workforce with the right knowledge and the right tools is our best defense against HAIs and, therefore, reimbursement penalties.

When Nurses Go Nocturnal Living in the opposite time frame as the rest of society makes night shift nursing a unique culture in itself. Room darkening shades and earplugs may be on our list of favorite things. On the other hand, we share a mutual dislike of Monday morning landscaping that seems to begin right when you are about to drift off to sleep. Whether you work the night shift once in a while, permanently, or in 8-hour shifts or 12-hour shifts, we all share in the night shift struggles.

Be Aware Studies show that the majority of night shift workers suffer from short sleep duration.

Falling asleep on the commute home is undoubtedly one of the most serious consequences resulting from a lack of sleep that can affect you and others sharing the roads. Lack of sleep has been known to cause a decline in performance and increase in errors. Sleep deprivation also reduces alertness and slows reaction time. Since the night shift throws off circadian rhythms, try not to schedule multiple night shifts in a row. If possible, try to prevent unnecessary sleepy driving by food shopping prior to a stretch of night shifts. Rather than driving to the gym, exercise in doors or walk the dog for fresh air. Finally, get a good day's sleep before making any major decisions.

Sleep Utopia Making a sleep oasis is vital for sleeping deeply during the day. Room darkeners, ear plugs, fans or white noise machines are a must. Use an alarm clock instead of relying on a cell phone.

Keep the room cool and don't skimp on a good mattress.

Self Care Remembering to care for yourself is the most important thing to keep in mind when bouncing back and forth between day and night shifts. Although you may be craving French Fries at 4 am, be good to your body! Try healthy shakes and decrease sugar consumption to avoid crashing.

Make sure to schedule social events on your days off to feel "normal." Maintain healthy eating habits and exercise as regularly as possible. By getting exercise outdoors, the exposure to sunlight can lighten moods and improve sleep quality.

Night shift is a unique "other world" experience. Without managers, extra ancillary staff and family members around, night nurses work autonomously to provide exceptional patient care. Bonds forged during night shift nursing are special because buddies are needed to survive the shift- whether to keep each other awake or to keep each other in great spirits. When the sun sets, these nurses let patient's loved ones sleep soundly at home knowing the patient is in good hands. The crazy hours may push nurses to the limits, but following these tips and tricks and remembering to care for ourselves makes for a rewarding career no matter what time of day.

Raritan Bay Medical Center Opens New Medical Arts Building, Gains Accolades and Adds Services photos provided

Raritan Bay Medical Center (RBMC) is expanding services with a newly constructed Medical Arts Building at its Old Bridge location, providing the community easy access to a full continuum of care. More than 400 people; public officials, local residents, physicians and hospital executives and staff celebrated the addition of the new building at a grand opening held October 19. The new multispecialty building at 2 Hospital Plaza is scheduled to open in the 1st quarter of 2015 and provides an array of services, including: the Joslin Diabetes Center, Affiliate at RBMC; advanced diagnostic imaging and laboratory services; an ambulatory surgery center; five operating room suites; women’s imaging; a host of physician offices representing a variety of specialties and more.

Easy scheduling, complimentary on-site parking and a relaxed, welcoming reception area are just a few of the patient amenities at the new Medical Arts Building. The property creates the experience of a hotel-like environment for patients and visitors. Its design allows patients and visitors to better navigate the facility. In addition, the already free surface parking has been greatly expanded. The building connects to the main hospital on the second floor via a “sky bridge.”

RBMC had several noteworthy events and accomplishments in 2014. The medical center and Meridian Health signed a letter of intent to explore a merger between the two organizations. RBMC became one of a few hospitals in the world to attain Magnet Status for

nursing excellence for a third consecutive time and became an affiliate of the Joslin Diabetes Center, the world’s preeminent diabetes research and clinical care organization, and now provides some of the latest advances for treating diabetes and its complications as well as patient education and support services. The medical center’s diabetes self-management education program was subsequently recognized with the Education Recognition Certificate from the American Diabetes Association.

Also in 2014, the hospital launched a secure, online patient portal MYRBMC providing patients 24/7 access to their health information and test results. And RBMC launched a new Neck and Back Center coordinated by a nurse navigator and using a collaborative approach to diagnose and treat neck or back pain. During the last several years, as career opportunities for Certified Public Accountants have expanded dramatically, accounting has become one of the fastest growing majors in American colleges and universities.

That’s what teacher Robert Garcia’s accounting students at Parsippany High School discovered November 10 when Janice Klostermeier, CPA, FACHE, MHA, executive vice president, chief financial officer and chief administrative officer for Emergency Medical Associates, visited to discuss the exciting, well-paying career opportunities that are available to students who study accounting.

“I’ve always had a love for numbers and knew early on that I wanted to work in finance. Pay it Forward is a great opportunity to inform students that also have a love for numbers of their career options,” said Klostermeier.

Klostermeier holds a bachelor’s degree of business administration in accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington and has been a certified public accountant since 1989. She is licensed as a CPA in New Jersey, New York and Texas. She recently received the CFO of the Year Award for Best Growth Manager from NJ Biz magazine.

Her employer, Emergency Medical Associates, provides emergency department management services to about 25 percent of the hospitals in New Jersey.

The presentation was part of the statewide Pay It Forward campaign initiated by the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA) to alert students to the rewarding career opportunities available to those who pursue an accounting degree. This fall, more than 160 CPAs are headed back to the classroom to discuss careers in accounting with nearly 10,000 high school students. As working professionals, these NJSCPA

members are able to give students a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed in accounting and the rewards accounting professionals can expect.

The Pay It Forward presentations include videos that allow students to learn about the rewarding career of a CPA, fun facts and an overview of the range of career choices available after graduation.

In addition to her financial background, Klostermeier also holds a master’s degree in health services administration and is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She joined Emergency Medical Associates in 2011.

education & careers Paul Madonia, M.D. will retire after 49 years of practicing in Hunterdon County After 49 years of practicing medicine in Hunterdon County, Paul Madonia, M.D., Assistant Medical Director and Family Practice Physician at Cornerstone Family Practice in Flemington will retire in December.

Dr.Madonia started his medical career in the Navy as a family practice physician.

In 1972, he volunteered at an Indian reservation in Ganado, Arizona. In 1973, he began practicing with the Flemington Medical Group and then opened his own practice in 1988. In 1995, Hunterdon Healthcare purchased his practice and he came on board as an employed Family Practice Physician with the hospital.

“I am ready to retire. I will miss my patients. It has been an honor and blessing to care for them over the years,” said Dr. Madonia. Dr. Madonia added,“Everyday

is a gift and you realize that even more in medicine.”

Dr. Madonia is looking forward to downsizing into a condo in Flemington, spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, going to see some plays and taking pictures.

Many of Dr. Madonia’s patients have been with him since he started in Flemington over 40 years ago. That is the case for Shirley Favier, age 90 of Flemington. “I will miss Dr. Madonia, he is a great doctor and I wish him the best,” said Ms. Favier.

On Tuesday, December 2nd a retirement reception will be held for Dr. Madonia from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Family Practice, Wescott Medical Arts Center, 9100 Wescott Drive in Flemington. Patients are invited to stop by and say good bye.

education & careers Focused care for geriatric patients St. Joseph’s Healthcare System clinicians share expertise As the population ages, providers are exploring new ways to improve quality of care for elder patients. An innovative leader in health care, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center (SJRMC), a member of St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, opened the region’s first dedicated Geriatric Emergency Department (Geriatric ED) nearly 5 years ago. Treating patients age 65 and older, the 20-bed treatment area with thicker mattresses, natural lighting throughout much of the common areas, reduced chaos and noise, is designed to meet the complex needs of older patients in a senior-friendly environment.

With years of experience in the area of geriatric emergency care, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System (SJHS) clinicians in Adult and Geriatric Emergency Services, as well as Nursing Care, shared their expertise at The New Jersey Hospital Association’s “Geriatric Emergency Department Symposium,” geared towards helping providers, statewide, establish their own geriatric emergency departments.

Approximately 90 percent of the hospitals in the state attended the symposium, which focused on a standardized set of Geriatric Emergency Department Guidelines that can

effectively improve the care of the geriatric population and can be implemented in any ED. These guidelines create a template for staffing, equipment, education, policies and procedures, follow-up care and performance improvement measures.

Holiday Cheer arrives early at Matheny Holiday Express, the all-volunteer band that gives 60 concerts between mid-November and Christmas Eve, made the Matheny Medical and Educational Center one of its first stops this year, performing for students and patients on Sunday, November 23.

No one had any trouble getting into the holiday spirit as the Robert Schonhorn Arts Center rocked with the sounds of

“Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, the “12 Days of Christmas” and Holiday Express’ signature song, “Nobody Ought to be Alone on Christmas”. The Matheny Choir joined in for a couple of songs and will appear with Holiday Express at its benefit concerts on December 11 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and on December 18 at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank.

Matheny is a special hospital and educational facility in Peapack, NJ, for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities. Holiday Express, which was founded in 1993 by restaurateur and musician Tim McLoone, has been performing at Matheny since 2001. Matheny Center of Medicine and Dentistry named after retiring President “In the future, when people come to the front desk and want to know where the medical and dental clinics are, we will direct them to the Proctor Center of Medicine and Dentistry.” That announcement was made at a farewell party on November 20 for retiring Matheny Medical and Educational Center president and CEO Steve Proctor. And it was a fitting tribute to the man who was

determined that Matheny inpatients and outpatients from the community would receive their medical and dental care in an appropriate and comfortable setting, something that he accomplished in 2003. To make sure that everyone remembers him, The Friends of Matheny announced that the auxiliary group was having a portrait of Proctor painted and that it would hang in the center.

Matheny is a special hospital and educational facility in Peapack, NJ, for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities. The Center of Medicine and Dentistry provides medical, dental and therapy care for Matheny inpatients and for people with disabilities in communities throughout New Jersey.

There were lots of other speakers at the event, held in Matheny’s Robert Schonhorn Arts Center. State Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman described Proctor as “a great man who has made such a difference in people’s lives.” Then, he introduced his colleague, Assemblywoman Donna M. Simon, who read a proclamation about Proctor signed by her, Bateman and Assemblyman Jack M. Ciattarelli. Also in attendance were Jennifer Velez, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services, and Dawn Apgar, deputy commissioner of the NJDHS. Steve Proctor, Velez said, “deserves every bit of praise

and accolades he receives. You are truly a champion. Your partnership with the state could not have been stronger.” Added Apgar: “You provided so much leadership. Your input goes far beyond this facility.”

Proctor, who spent almost 16 years at Matheny, thanked everyone who attended and said his job was simply “to try to normalize lives for people who years ago would have been shut away somewhere.” The evening concluded with a performance by Matheny music therapists of a medley of songs made popular by Earth, Wind & Fire (one of Proctor’s favorite music groups).

Hunterdon Healthcare presents the “Spirit of Hunterdon” Awards On Saturday, November 15th, during Hunterdon Medical Center Foundation’s 34th Annual Crystal Ball, three individuals were presented with the prestigious “Spirit of Hunterdon” award.

The inspiration for this award came from the Board of Trustees of the Hunterdon Healthcare System, who wanted to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the success of the Hunterdon Healthcare System by giving of their time, talents and financial support. The Spirit of Hunterdon award was designed by Bill Healy and represents the clarity, perfection and caring which exists throughout Hunterdon Healthcare.

The 2014 Spirit of Hunterdon award was presented to Mark Peters, II, Pharm. D. of Raritan Township, Karen Kallens of Belle Mead and Hunterdon County Prosecutor, Anthony P. Kearns.

Dr. Mark Peters, a pharmacist, understands the importance of medication access and compliance to improving patient outcomes and reducing overall healthcare costs.

Mark personally experienced this first hand at the age of eleven when his mother passed away of cancer.

His family incurred thousands of dollars of debt despite his family having health insurance. Mark learned later in his life that his local pharmacy was able to partner with CancerCare to relieve some of the debt incurred by his family. Mark wanted to pay this generosity forward. In 2004, he shared his idea to help the under and uninsured access and stay compliant with their prescription medicines. He formed the Hunterdon County Medication Access Partnership or HCMAP with Dr. Reverend Mark Summer as a collaboration between churches, the Hunterdon Medical Center, health care providers, and other community organizations.

For the past eleven years, Mark has been dedicated to leading fundraising efforts to support the efforts of HCMAP. He has worked with local government officials to educate them on the importance of supporting this program so it has adequate funds to help better serve residents in Hunterdon County. The Hunterdon County Medication Access Partnership helps to support the program that is operated at Hunterdon Medical Center. This program has been so successful that other counties have emulated it and have created medication access programs for their residents. HCMAP has provided over $6 million worth of free medications to those in need.

Karen Kallens has been the Nurse Educator with the Hunterdon County Medication Access Program for the past nine years.

Karen’s job is to help connect patients with the resources and medications needed at a reduced rate or at no cost to the patient.

She follows each filed application on her patients and if a claim is denied unjustly, she appeals the case to ensure the patient will get their prescription medication. She works with her patients so they understand the importance of being compliant with their medication and also provide disease education to improve their quality of life. Karen has helped over 4,000 patients through the Hunterdon County Medication Access Program. The Program meets a critical community need and has improved access for the county’s uninsured and underinsured residents to prescription medications, thereby improving health and minimizing excessive and avoidable use of the emergency department.

Under her direction, the program has received many accolades including being recognized in 2010 with the Community Outreach Award by the New Jersey Hospital Association’s Health Research and Educational Trust. Just last month, Karen retired from Hunterdon Healthcare and the program is now being led by Corinne Dalrymple.

Keeping our community safe is his priority and he does an excellent job. Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III was appointed by Governor Chris Christie to be the Hunterdon County Prosecutor on December 3, 2010 after being

unanimously confirmed by the New Jersey Senate. Prosecutor Kearns oversees an office consisting of a Bureau of Criminal Investigation, legal department and administrative staff. He coordinates the law enforcement efforts

of 26 municipalities with 15 local police departments, the Sheriff's office and the State Police within Hunterdon County. Prosecutor Kearns is responsible for issuing directives, standardizing law enforcement conduct and for implementing all directives from the Attorney General. He also coordinates and works with the various human service agencies and other governmental agencies with regard to any law enforcement issues and the needs of its communities.

Recently, Prosecutor Kearns launched a new initiative to train and equip law enforcement officers in Hunterdon County to administer Naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of a heroin or opiate overdose. Police officers are usually the first to arrive on the scene of an emergency, and in the case of an overdose, minutes could be the difference between life and death.

In addition to all this great work, he is President of the Hunterdon County Bar Association and is currently the Vice President of the Immaculate Conception School Advisory Committee in Annandale.
