PSE&G and Trinitas Regional Medical Center Win Energy Efficiency Award The New Jersey Association of Energy Engineers (NJ AEE) has selected a $3.7 million energy efficiency effort implemented at Trinitas Regional Medical Center and financed by Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) as their Project of the Year. The award was presented at the NJ AEE annual awards gala held in Woodbridge, NJ. The award-winning energy efficiency work at Trinitas Regional Medical Center was completed through the PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program. This overall $129 million effort helps hospitals in the utility’s service territory identify and finance major energy efficiency improvements that substantially lower their energy usage and greatly decrease their energy costs.

Receiving this recognition from the NJ AEE is “the icing on the cake,” exclaimed Gary S. Horan, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Trinitas Regional Medical Center. "The Hospital Efficiency Program has had a positive result on our operation, saving both energy and cost, and allowing us to direct more resources to patient care. It’s a thrill to receive this award for a project that is already a win-win for us,” he added.

The energy efficiency upgrades were made at Trinitas Regional Medical Center’s Williamson Street and New Point campuses. They will save the hospital $390,000 annually in utility costs, or about $7.8 million over the 20 year lifespan of the new equipment. Improvements include updated heating and water cooling systems as well as the installation of state of the art lighting and energy management technologies. In addition to reducing energy bills, the upgrades will improve the comfort and convenience of Trinitas Regional Medical Center’s patients, staff and visitors.

“We designed our program to help hospitals like Trinitas Regional Medical Center save money that they can better use to advance their healthcare mission and save lives,” said Joe Forline, vice president – customer solutions for PSE&G. “We’re honored that the New Jersey Association of Energy Engineers is recognizing our Hospital Efficiency Program and the work at Trinitas Regional Medical Center.

We look forward to helping even more hospitals in the months and years to come.”

Through the Hospital Efficiency Program, PSE&G provides an investment-grade audit at no cost to the hospital, then proposes various cost effective energy conservation measures that will make substantial improvements in the hospital’s efficient use of energy with a payback period of less than 15 years. The program greatly reduces the financial burden on a hospital by providing up-front funding for the total cost of a project. The hospital then pays back a portion of the total project cost after the project is complete through its PSE&G bill at zero percent interest over 36 months.

PSE&G’s Hospital Efficiency Program is unique. There are only four utility energy efficiency programs in the U.S. that target hospitals; among those programs, PSE&G’s is the only one in which the utility bears all of the upfront capital costs.

Trunfio, who is 67 years old, has been an extraordinary leader at Atlantic Health System for the past 15 years, overseeing expansion that has grown the organization into one of the largest and most respected health care systems in the region. Trunfio will continue to lead the organization as the Board of Trustees undertakes a national search for his successor.

Ask An Expert Physician Collaboration Drives Cost Savings

By Christopher J. O'Connor Executive Vice President, GNYHA Ventures, Inc., President GNYHA Services, Inc. and President, Nexera, Inc. Like never before, hospital leadership must employ every possible method to reduce costs, including the implementation of a supply chain management plan that is defined by solid, strategic physician relationships. Hospital leadership needs to identify physician stakeholders and educate them about their vital interest in the healthcare supply spend. One way to initiate these relationships is to invite clinicians to join your hospital’s value analysis team, or better yet, to lead it.

Many clinical purchasing decisions, after all, are made by habit rather than by evaluating the evidence. When physicians are incorporated into the value analysis team and empowered with comparative data on the cost and efficacy of clinical products, they are much more willing to initiate product changes.

Once physicians embrace their role on the value analysis team, they learn how their changes actually improve the bottom line while preserving the quality of care. In turn, hospital leaders must ensure that the necessary tools are in place to measure the success of the value analysis program and then make certain those results are communicated to stakeholders. Such collaboration enables physicians to see the positive results that are directly attributable to leaving their clinical comfort zones.

Of course, value analysis is just one area in which to forge strategic physician relationships. Hospital leaders should pursue other opportunities to engage physicians in strategic processes to produce positive changes for their institutions, especially those focused on the quality of care. Quality improvement initiatives foster collaboration across disciplines, providing a forum where different members of the care team work together to solve problems. This same method of communication can and should be used to build strategic relationships between the medical staff and supply chain leadership.

Strong physician relationships require regular, meaningful, two-way communication between doctors and senior management. It is critical for hospital leaders to be good listeners who work with physicians to craft solutions based on clinical needs. When the C-suite controls the dialogue and sets rigid parameters for the decision-making process, it furthers the divide between management and clinicians, making it difficult to resolve problems or take advantage of great ideas. I have a colleague who likes to say, “You need to be able to call a physician by his or her first name.”

What she’s really saying is that hospital leaders must build relationships with physicians based on a foundation of trust and respect. Those relationships can then be used to move the facility’s supply chain strategy forward with full clinical endorsement so that it meets physicians’ needs while achieving purchasing economy.

The bottom line is that successful cost-reduction strategies must move healthcare professionals—both hospital leadership and clinicians—out of a silo culture toward a culture of collaboration. The C-suite should be candid about the challenges of delivering quality care in the current environment and invite physicians to be catalysts of change, helping to find solutions for a healthier future for patients and hospitals alike.

Lifting the Stigma: Reforming Mental Health Mental illness affects 61.5 million Americans. One in 17 Americans lives with serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder. The American Medical Association describes mental illness as the nation's number one health problem. It currently sends more people to the hospital than cancer, lung, and heart disease combined.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among people ages 15-24. Every day, 22 veterans die from suicide. Sadly, suicide is the second leading cause of death in college students.

Serious mental illness costs Americans $193.2 billion in lost earnings and productivity every year. Not addressing the lack of access to mental health care can lead to higher rates of high school dropouts, unemployment, incarceration, hospitalization, and homelessness.

Since mental illness does not discriminate between gender, race, age, or socioeconomic status, support for mental health legislation should equally cross party lines. Two current bills are in Congress regarding mental health reform: “H.R. 3717, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act,” and H.R. 4575, “Strengthening Mental Health in our Communities Act of 2014.” Some highlights of the bills are federal resources for jail diversion, increased resources for suicide prevention, and grants for tele-psychiatry for treatment of mental health disorders. Additionally, the bills provide protections for access to psychiatric medicines through Medicare and Medicaid and financial incentives for substance abuse treatment programs.

Opposition to this bill includes those who do not believe mental illness even exists or that it requires the same status of treatment as medical diseases.

There are no easy biomarkers that can be tested for in the laboratory in order provide a positive diagnosis of depression. There is no easy recovery for every individual with mental illness. However, to say that there are no chemical imbalances in the brain and that these medications do not make life livable for the population is an outrage.

People living with mental illnesses like depression face a negative stigma, hiding their illness to disguise what society thinks might be a personal weakness. What happens when people with depression do not have access to medication and treatment? These people cannot just “snap out of it.”

Why is it acceptable to take medication and seek treatment for stomach pain, knee pain, and diabetes, but treatment for the brain is seen as illegitimate?

Right now it is actually easier to obtain access to a gun than it is to get access to mental health treatment. There is little legislation for preventing illness from escalating to crisis. As nurses, I urge you to back these mental health reform bills because the consequences of non-treatment are devastating to avoid homelessness, incarceration, episodes of violence, suicide and fiscal losses of non-productivity. Nurses have the ability to enact political change and ensure positive steps to mental health reform.

Be an advocate for your patients suffering from mental illness - speak up, disband the negative stigmas, and support policy changes to improve access to mental health treatment.

education & careers Twelve Outstanding Early-Career Nurse Faculty selected as 2014 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) recently announced the 12 talented nursing faculty members from across the country who have been chosen to participate in its prestigious Nurse Faculty Scholars program this year. The RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholars program is strengthening the academic productivity and overall excellence of nursing schools by developing the next generation of leaders in academic nursing. This is the program’s seventh and final cohort.

The Nurse Faculty Scholar award is given to junior nurse faculty who show strong promise as future leaders in academic nursing. Each scholar receives a three-year $350,000 award to pursue research, leadership training in all aspects of the faculty role, and mentoring from senior faculty at his or her institution. The scholars chosen this year are conducting a range of studies, examining issues ranging from pediatric asthma to dementia care to health literacy to HIV treatment to the use of technology to improve access and outcomes for rural and uninsured individuals.

“Each of our 2014 RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholars has enormous potential and a deep commitment to educating nurses, improving health and health care, and building a Culture of Health in this country,” said Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN, national program director for the RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholars program. “We look forward to working with this new group as they conduct groundbreaking research, strengthen the academy, and advance the nation’s health.”

Matheny Artists visit VNA of Somerset Hills Day Center members

For several years, artwork created by artists in the Matheny Medical and Educational Center’s Arts Access Program has been hanging throughout the Adult Day Center of the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills in Basking Ridge NJ. “We are thrilled to have the Arts Access artwork here,” said Maria M. Keenan, VNA Adult Day Center manager. Our patients may not be able to put in words what the artwork means to them, but you can see the enthusiasm in their eyes.”

On Wednesday, September 24, two Arts Access artists visited the VNA and spoke about their artwork and life at Matheny to a group of VNA members who come regularly

to the Day Center. Jess Evans pointed out that, in addition to painting, she dances, choreographs, writes drama, directs plays and acts.

She told the Day Center patients, “I would like to dance for you one day.”

Yasin Reddick said he writes stories, plays and is working on his autobiography. He paints and also creates computer-generated digital art. “I don’t let my disability stop me from doing anything,” he added.

Evans interjected that, “Anyone can paint, even you guys.”

Free eye and foot exams for people with diabetes

Foot exams will also be offered from 10:00 a.m. – noon.

Diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of blindness and vision loss, yet early detection makes prevention or treatment possible. People with diabetes can develop a variety of foot problems, which can result in severe cases of an amputation of a toe, foot or leg. However, with regular check ups, one can prevent any serious problems.

Specialists trained in detecting diabetic eye conditions and foot problems will conduct the examinations. Both insulin dependent and non-dependent individuals with diabetes who are not currently under the care of an eye specialist or a podiatrist and who do not have resources to get this service are urged to participate.

The event will include a diabetes education fair which will showcase the latest diabetes products and supplies. All attendees receiving an eye exam will have their eyes dilated and are required to arrange for a ride home.
