During the last several years, as career opportunities for Certified Public Accountants have expanded dramatically, accounting has become one of the fastest growing majors in American colleges and universities.

That’s what students at Whippany Park High School discovered Nov. 13 when Janice Klostermeier, CPA, FACHE, MHA, executive vice president, chief financial officer and chief administrative officer for Emergency Medical Associates, visited to discuss the exciting, well-paying career opportunities that are available to students who study accounting.

Klostermeier holds a bachelor’s degree of business administration in accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington and has been a certified public accountant since 1989. She is licensed as a CPA in New Jersey, New York and Texas. Her employer, Emergency Medical Associates, provides emergency department management services to about 25 percent of the hospitals in New Jersey.

The presentation was part of the statewide Pay It Forward campaign initiated by the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA) to alert students to the rewarding career opportunities available to those who pursue an accounting degree. This fall, more than 160 CPAs are headed back to the classroom to discuss careers in accounting with nearly 10,000 high school students.

As working professionals, these NJSCPA members are able to give students a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed in accounting and the rewards accounting professionals can expect.

Even in today’s uncertain economy, there’s still a strong demand for new accounting graduates. The U.S. Department of Labor projects 22percent growth in accounting careers between 2008 and 2018. Yahoo!

Education ranks an accounting degree as the third “hottest” degree and a safe bet for the future.

As an increased benefit and to encourage students to enter the accounting field, the NJSCPA operates New Jersey’s largest professional scholarship fund. In 2013, the NJSCPA Scholarship Fund awarded more than $425,000 in scholarships to 74 high school and college students to support their studies in accounting.

The Pay It Forward presentations include videos that allow students to learn about the rewarding career of a CPA, fun facts and an overview of the range of career choices available after graduation.

An Injection of Value Analysis for Hospital Health More than a year after the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act, the biggest change to U.S. healthcare in nearly 50 years, hospitals are understandably still hard at work developing and implementing strategies that respond to the law’s mandates and reimbursement changes. However, reducing operating costs while improving care quality remains at the top of the healthcare “to do” list.

Market analysis estimates indicate that hospitals need to cut expenses by 10% just to preserve today's margins without sacrificing patient safety or care quality. Hospitals must take a comprehensive look at where and how their resources are currently being used, then create a system-wide strategy for improving efficiency. Management changes to physician preference items, which account for 60% of hospital supply costs, present an effective strategy for offsetting economic difficulties.

H HOSPITAL of the Month Southside Hospital is a Destination for Quality and Innovation When North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center extended their cardiac surgery program to Southside Hospital and established the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s first tertiary facility in Suffolk County, it was not the culmination of a vision but rather the beginning of one – designed to continually bring the latest in cardiac innovation and technology to Long Island’s south shore.

Southside performed Long Island’s first-ever left atrial appendage occlusion procedure called the Lariat, making it the first on Long Island to offer Lariat, Cryoablation and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedures under the same roof.

In the past 15 years, Dr. Hartman performed aortic valve replacement and double bypass surgery on Mr. Barbash, who remained an active skier and biker until he was age 88. Empowering Change Being told by your doctor that you have a "higher-than-average risk" of multiple diseases might make you a little queasy. The implications of diabetes come at a price. People with diabetes are twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke. Untreated ketoacidosis, a complication of Type 1 Diabetes due to elevated blood sugars is life threatening. From hearing loss to neuropathy and skin complications, diabetes is a disease that requires a stronger focus in both the inpatient and outpatient setting to address this healthcare epidemic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over eight percent of the U.S. population is affected by diabetes. The number of people with diabetes is estimated to reach 300 million by 2025, according to the Journal for Advanced Nursing. A leading cause of kidney failure, limb amputations and blindness makes diabetes the seventh leading cause of death in the US. These statistics are frightening, but perhaps the most distressing fact is that many of these co-morbidities can be prevented.

If complications can be decreased with strict glycemic control measures, then what is the set back? Patients face barriers including incomplete understanding of diabetes, little motivation to prevent the disease, and lack of socioeconomic resources and support. By missing follow up appointments, patients may not adhere to the protocols healthcare professionals are trying desperately to implement.

Healthcare workers also struggle with barriers to prevention. The American Diabetes Association has published studies regarding the actual versus perceived knowledge nurses possess about diabetes. Results alarmingly correlate to large knowledge deficits. Understanding the basics of the disease process among health care professionals drives effective patient education.

Clinically, there are many avenues of prevention. Controlling blood pressure, conducting early detection of diabetic retinopathy by routine eye exams, going for foot exams, dieting, and self monitoring blood glucose are several simple practices that can be more widely employed.

Even with all these clinical fixes at our fingertips, something is clearly amiss.

Nurses working on medical/surgical units and in the OR/PACU witness amputations occur more and more frequently due to diabetic complications. Consequently, these patients continue to lead the same lifestyle even after an amputation. It is a frustrating scenario where patient education- and even amputation- is not enough motivation for change.

With preventative strategies already in play, where are healthcare workers going wrong in decreasing the epidemic? Patients need the motivation and self empowerment to want to change their lifestyle. All the resources, technology and education are not enough to change a person unless he or she is ready to take the next steps. As nurses, let us start with the basics. Improving the patient's self worth to care for him or herself will make him more inclined to stay on track. Rather than going through the motions teaching about various types of insulin, give patients the will to control this aspect of their life and be an active participant in their daily health care. Management of the disease needs to align with the patient's values and culture because diabetes care is really in the hands of the patient, not controlled in an office visit or hospital stay. Diet and exercise plans will not be effective unless we can promote empowerment of the patients so that they can take charge of the situation and make positive changes because it is in their best interests.

St. Joseph Hospital, Bethpage, got a helping hand from Hunter EMS along with Mr. Claus, the Grinch and paramedic Sal Cinquemani, as they stuffed an ambulance with toys for needy children.

St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage kicked off its celebration of Christmas with a toy drive and Christmas tree lighting. Each year, St. Joseph’s staff creates a free, magical wonderland at the hospital where the public are eager spectators. Mr. and Mrs. Claus visit the hospital, along with their team of elves, to the delight of young children. But that’s not all, there’s a Snow Queen, a Christmas bear and the Grinch! Children are invited to tell Santa what they want for Christmas and Mrs. Claus has a special Christmas book in which she records the gifts. Amazement ensues when it seems that Santa knows if they’ve been bad or good and gifts are distributed. Reindeer girls deliver hot chocolate and candy canes to all.

This year, Hunter EMS assisted as St. Joseph staff, Mr. Claus and the Grinch, along with Hunter paramedic Sal Cinquemani stuffed the ambulance with toys for needy children.

Feinstein Researcher receives 2013 Best of Manhasset Award Cynthia Aranow, MD, investigator at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and associate professor at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, was selected for the 2013 Best of Manhasset Award in the Internist category by the Manhasset Award Program.

Dr. Aranow is a rheumatologist specializing in lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. She is a codirector of the Clinical Research Unit for the Feinstein Institute’s Center for Autoimmune Disease. Dr. Aranow has extensive experience in running and designing clinical trials as well as in other types of research studies. Respected Colorectal Surgeon joins Southside Hospital

David E. Rivadeneira, MD, MBA, FACS, FASCRS has joined Southside Hospital as full time faculty. In addition, he was named Vice Chair of Surgical Strategic Initiatives for the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Eastern/Suffolk Region.

An accomplished colorectal surgeon who is board-certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Rivadeneira’s main focus is on minimally invasive, complex colorectal procedures. He is one of the few surgeons in the Northeastern United States who performs single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) and robotic colorectal procedures using the DaVinci Surgical System. SILS is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which the surgeon operates almost exclusively through a single entry point, most commonly the patient’s navel. Unlike traditional, multi-incision laparoscopic surgery, SILS leaves only a single small scar.

“I don’t think you have to sacrifice quality or that individualized care in a community hospital setting for state-of-the-art surgical technology,” said Dr. Rivadeneira. “At Southside Hospital, patients receive the best of both.”

Dr. Rivadeneria just got voted a top doctor by Castle Connolly in the field of colon & rectal surgery.

"The addition of a top-flight surgeon such as Dr. Rivadeneira, is a great step forward for Southside Hospital, and is the result of our focus on providing the most advanced care across a range of programs" said Donna Moravick, the hospital’s executive director. “This respected surgeon brings a wealth of

A graduate of Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC, with honors, Dr. Rivadeneira completed his surgical training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and New York Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident.

He completed a National Institutes of Health (NIH) surgical oncology research fellowship also at Cornell University Medical College, as well as a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts where he received an award for outstanding academic achievement.

For five years, Dr. Rivadeneira was a member of Stony Brook University Medical Center’s full-time faculty where he was an associate professor of surgery.

Internationally recognized as a leader in the field of colorectal surgery, Dr. Rivadeneira is a coeditor of “Minimally Invasive Approaches to Colon and Rectal Disease: Techniques and Best Practices,” a textbook for surgeons and medical students throughout the country. Dr. Rivadeneira has published his research in numerous professional journals and serves as a reviewer for several, including Diseases of the Colon and Rectum; Gastroenterology and Hepatology; Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery; and World Journal of Surgery. He has also presented his research at professional conferences throughout the United States and abroad. Dr. Rivadeneira is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Dr. Rivadeneira’s colleagues, Drs. Jacob Eisdorfer and Cesar Sanz, have joined Southside Hospital as well to further develop the hospital’s colorectal program.

CHS eHealth earns place among top tier In November, system leadership learned that all five CHS hospitals live on CHS eHealth, with the Epic electronic medical record (EMR), achieved Stage 6 (out of seven possible stages) on the HIMSS Analytics EMR Maturity Model, placing them in the top 12% of EMR hospitals in the nation.

HIMSS Analytics, an independent, not-for-profit subsidiary of Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), ranks hospitals from Stage 0 to Stage 7, the highest category. Only 2% of all U.S. hospitals have achieved Stage 7, with none so far in New York.

“This is tremendous recognition of an enormous body of work by so many in our hospitals, CHS IT, CHS Services and our vendors,” commented Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer Marcy Dunn, who has spearheaded the CHS eHealth initiative. “The EMR implementation clearly fostered ‘systemness’ at CHS and has shown us the value of our combined strength. Thousands of CHS physicians and staff from all six hospitals collaborated clinically and operationally to achieve the best possible system. Congratulations to all!”

As part of the evaluation of CHS’s EMR implementation, HIMSS paid special attention to the use of technology for medication safety, development of clinical decision support, overall EMR adoption and use, deployment of radiology and cardiology imaging systems, and document imaging.

According to HIMSS Analytics, reaching Stage 6 is a result of good direction and focus, along with a steadfast commitment from leadership. Stage 6 hospitals have established clear goals for improving safety, minimizing errors and prioritizing IT implementations. Stage 6 is a precursor to Stage 7, and CHS’s hospitals can now advance toward Stage 7.

The five CHS hospitals that have earned Stage 6 ranking— St. Catherine, St. Francis, Good Samaritan, Mercy and St. Charles— will soon be listed on the HIMSS Analytics website and featured with other Stage 6 hospitals in a special presentation at the organization’s annual conference. St. Joseph will go live on CHS eHealth in 2014, joining its peers in this historic transition to better coordinate patient care.

Mathilde Krim, PhD, founding chairperson of amFAR and a leader in the field of AIDS research and fundraising, recently offered her inspiring messages of optimism and equality to clients living with HIV/AIDS and medical staff at North Shore University Hospital during the annual World AIDS day commemoration held by the hospital’s Infectious Disease Department’s Center for AIDS Research and Treatment (CART).

The program began with poetry readings and personal thoughts shared by the Center’s clients. Each participant then lit a candle as the names of friends who had succumbed to AIDS during the past year were read aloud.

Bruce Farber, MD, Chief, Infectious Disease at North Shore, introduced Dr. Krim as “the matriarch of the anti-HIV program.” He said that during the 1980s, AIDS was an unknown disease and that “all we knew was that it was highly fatal.” After detailing Dr. Krim’s humanitarian efforts to augment research funding and, more importantly, offer hope and dignity to people living with HIV/AIDS, Dr. Farber said, “Every once in a while, one person can make a difference…in this case, it is Dr. Mathilde Krim.”

During her brief remarks, Dr. Krim thanked Dr. Farber and Joseph McGowan, MD, medical director of CART, for their efforts. Speaking to a clearly emotional audience, many of whom were eager to shake her hand or offer a heartfelt “thank you,” Dr. Krim said that she was optimistic that a cure for AIDS would be found in the near future. Before taking the time to pose for photographs with medical staff and clients, Dr. Krim repeated the message that has made her a beloved figure in the international AIDS community — “Every human life has the same value as any other.”

Catholic Health Services presents its highest award Each year, Catholic Health Services (CHS) seeks nominations from its staff for the system’s Patrick J. Scollard Award for Leadership.

This year’s winner of CHS’s highest honor is Patricia Fogarty, division director for CHS’s Maryhaven Center of Hope, where she has been on staff for more than 35 years.

Chosen from among colleagues across CHS, Fogarty was recognized at the system’s 10th annual leadership conference, held at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale.

“Patricia is committed to the organization and to helping people.

She has been described by her colleagues as someone who makes people feel important, significantly valued and appreciated,” said CHS President and Chief Executive Officer Alan Guerci, MD. He added, “Patricia embraces the demand for new, original programs and has helped oversee the expansion of quality programs with unfailing enthusiasm. As such, she is a wellknown and respected innovator among colleagues in other agencies and New York state.”

A lifelong resident of Huntington, Fogarty is a certified rehabilitation counselor and licensed mental health counselor. She is a member of the Long Island Behavioral Health Coalition and the New York State Rehabilitation Association, Inc.

A parishioner at St. Patrick Church in Huntington, Fogarty and her husband, John, assist with Pre-Cana marriage preparation. Also, she is a member of the Parish Financial Committee, a Eucharistic Minister and team captain for the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative.

One of the two leading finalists for the Patrick J. Scollard Award is Arlene Costello, RN, director, Maternal Child Nursing Services at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. For more than 30 years, Costello has demonstrated true leadership and vision. Her steady guidance and mentorship have consistently enhanced patient outcomes. The retired captain, Nurse Corps, U.S. Navy Reserve, supported a team-building initiative that enhanced communication throughout Good Samaritan’s maternity services.

Costello lives in Mastic with her husband, Tommy.

The other leading finalist for this notable honor is St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center’s Infection Control Coordinator Bonnie Morales, RN. Morales, who has been with the hospital since 1983, researches and attends local and statewide meetings, in addition to those organized by CHS, and then develops successful programs.

from St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue with an MBA in health care management. Morales lives in Selden with her husband, Frank, and has two sons, Kristofer and Brandon.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Ambulatory Services network’s commitment to innovation, organizational change and improved patient experience was recognized recently with a Success Story award from Press Ganey during the company’s national client conference in Orlando.

Press Ganey, based in South Bend, Ind., partners with more than 10,000 health care organizations worldwide to create and sustain high-performing organizations, with the goal of improving the overall health care experience.

Ambulatory Services’ Ganey surveys since 2009 show an increase in patients’ likelihood to recommend the practice, and growing sensitivity to the needs and privacy of patients.

The network has been recognized for developing a service excellence play book called the Leadership Tool Kit, which provides best practices that are adopted by physicians in the health system’s approximately 400 outpatient locations across the New York metropolitan area. Ambulatory Services has also found that staff has embraced and benefited from standardizing the best practices, leading to higher patient satisfaction scores.

“We have been able to grow the number of outpatient practices and still maintain top-notch care through our staff’s commitment to developing and utilizing best practices across all of our physician units,” said Joseph Moscola, senior vice president and executive director, Physician and Ambulatory Network Services. “We are honored to be recognized for these efforts and will continue to provide our patients the best care possible.”

Representatives from Ambulatory Services’ service excellence team – Susan Congiusta, RN, director of the program, Tiffany Badurinia and Christine Carbone -- took part in the conference this week, presenting how they were able to codify practices for the health system’s vast, growing network of outpatient practices by developing a Leadership Tool Kit. The health system has approximately 400 ambulatory physician practices in eight counties in the New York metropolitan area that comprise the network.

This group faculty size and total revenues have doubled since 2004 to more than $1.2 billion in 2012.
