Mastic participates in Tunnel to Towers Run Members of the Mastic Fire Department joined fellow firefighters from around the world to participate in the 13th Annual Tunnel to Towers Run. During the, run members stopped to pay tribute to one of their own, Firefighter Kevin Smith FDNY Haz-Mat Co.1, who was also a past member of Mastic Fire Department and was one of the 343 killed in the WTC attacks on September 11, 2001. What made this moment more intense for the Mastic members was the fact that the FDNY recruit that was holding Kevin’s banner was his daughter, Josephine Smith. After completing the run, the members took a moment to get a group shot in front of FDNY 10 Truck.

Firefighters Museum Badge Of Courage Dinner & Awards honors Island Park Fire Department and fire chief The Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center hosted its Annual Badge of Courage Dinner on Friday, October 10th at 7 p.m. on Museum Row in Uniondale. During the dinner portion of the event, the museum honored the Island Park Fire Department and its chief with the Firefighters Humanitarian Award. Whether it’s called “Hurricane Sandy” or “SuperStorm Sandy,” Long Islanders agree that Sandy left vast physical and emotional devastation in her wake. Flooding caused by the storm surge in the wake of Sandy destroyed the Island Park Fire Department trucks and ambulance, and heavily damaged the fire station facility. Despite nearly four feet of water in the fire house, over one hundred rescue personnel battled numerous house fires and conducted search-and-rescue efforts following the storm. Island Park Fire Department was left trying to cope with the loss of their own property and equipment while trying to fulfill their basic mission of helping the public. The department members worked tirelessly, 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide the best fire/EMS protection to their community, while also digging out their own homes and caring for their families. Park - the small island-village with a motto of: “The Little Town That Can” – was presented with the Firefighters Humanitarian Award, as was their Chief of Department, Anthony P. D’Esposito at the Museum’s Badge of Courage dinner. D’Esposito, currently serving his second consecutive term as Island Park Fire Department’s Chief of Department, joined the department at 18 years old. Born and raised in Island Park, he is a graduate of Chaminade High School and Hofstra University. He has been a member of the New York City Police Department since 2006, and currently serves as a New York City detective assigned to the 73rd Precinct Detective Squad. In 2008, when Anthony lost a dear friend, admired for his compassion and charity work, Jimi Gubelli, Anthony co-founded the Jimi Gubelli Foundation to honor his friend’s legacy of generosity. Since the foundation’s inception, it has secured over $80,000 in scholarships for Island Park’s graduating high school seniors. The foundation has also raised funds to purchase, install and provide training to certify operators in Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) at

the Sacred Heart Parish Center and at Masone Beach. Anthony has been the recipient of the Arthur Kuss Jr. Award, the Chief Thomas Reichel Award, and the Town of Hempstead Distinguished Service Medal. In recognition of his efforts in Island Park after Hurricane Sandy, Anthony was appointed by Governor Cuomo to serve as co-chairman of the New York State Reconstruction Project. “We are thrilled to honor the Island Park Fire Department and Chief D’Esposito with the Firefighters Humanitarian Award as they exemplify the type of heroic service that Nassau County relies upon in times of disaster, whether it be fire, extreme weather, a combination of both, or other lifethreatening situations”, said Alana Petrocelli, Executive Director of the Nassau County Firefighters Museum. “The Badge of Courage Dinner also helps raise funds for our Museum & Education Center so that it can continue to thrive as a valuable resource for fire prevention and safety for all our families.” To date, over 100,000 people have visited the educational facility that features interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, displays of antique trucks, photographs of volunteer firefighters’ heroic efforts in history, and other illustrations. The museum was named after lifelong firefighter Francis X. Pendl, an ex-Chief of the Bethpage Fire Department who began to collect fire service memorabilia in the lobby of the Fire Academy to memorialize and educate about the service of Nassau County firefighters. - CAROLYN STONE

Manhasset-Lakeville battles private dwelling blaze in Thomaston On Saturday, October 25th, 2014 at 11:18 p.m., ManhassetLakeville Fire Department Companies 3, 4 and 5 were dispatched to the intersection of Windsor Road and Lodge Road in the JUMP TO FILE # Village of Thomas- 103014124 ton for a reported house fire. Deputy Chief Candan (8704) was the first unit to respond and was advised that multiple calls were being received, all reporting a house fire with two children possibly trapped on the second floor. While in route, the dispatcher advised Deputy Chief Candan that Nassau County Police units were on scene requesting a forthwith response for heavy fire. Deputy Chief Candan arrived on the scene two minutes later and transmitted a "Signal 10" for a working house fire. Deputy Chief Candan reported that there was heavy fire on the first floor of a two and a half story peaked-roof private dwelling and that all occupants were out of the house and accounted for. Ladder 8743 and Engine 8735 were the first two pieces of apparatus to arrive on the scene and had the arduous task of dealing with two houses on fire. Two hose
lines were immediately stretched off Engine 8735; one to the neighboring house on Exposure 4, which had caught-on-fire due to the intense heat and flames, and the second hose line operated on the main body of fire. All fire in the neighboring house was quickly extinguished with minimal extension to the interior. A total of five hose lines were stretched and operated to extinguish the fire throughout the large house. The aerial master stream on Ladder 8743 was also used to hit stubborn pockets of fire which were inaccessible to members. Multiple neighboring fire departments provided mutual aid to the scene including the Great Neck Alert, Vigilant and Roslyn Fire Companies, Port Washington, New Hyde Park and Garden City Park Fire Departments. One Manhasset-Lakeville firefighter was transported with minor injuries and released. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office was notified for an immediate investigation and deemed the cause electrical in nature and not suspicious. All units were released from the scene by 4:45 a.m. by Chief of Department Farrone (8705). - KIRK CANDAN

Long Island’s Bob McConville elected as President of FASNY Albany, NY. Robert (Bob) McConville, veteran Suffolk County Fire Official and EMT, was installed as President of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), at its 142nd Annual Convention at The Desmond Hotel & Conference Center in Albany, NY on August 22. Among the many issues that the newly-elected FASNY President will work on during his tenure, and that have an impact on New York’s volunteer first responders and the communities they serve, are initiatives addressing firefighters’ and other first responders’ health and wellness, life safety training and evolving developments in fire safety education. In addition to many posts he’s held since first volunteering at the St. James Volunteer Fire Department in 1968, Bob is a past president of three area fire-related organizations: the Southern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, the Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, and the Suffolk County Volunteer Fire Departments’ Emerald Society. Bob has served the community as an EMT for 25 years and is a 32-year member of the Selden Fire Department. As a member of Selden Fire Department’s Dixon Engine Co 3, Bob

served as Company Treasurer and Company Secretary, and in 1990-91, as Captain. He is an active member in the New York State, Suffolk County, and Brookhaven Town Drill Team Captains Associations and is an ex-Captain and original charter member of Selden’s “Slow-Pokes” Drill Team. Proving the adage, “If you need something done, give it to a busy person” – Bob was elected Selden Fire District Commissioner, for a five-year term in 2009. McConville, a resident of Selden since 1980, served as General Chairman of the FASNY convention in 1999, when Suffolk County hosted the convention, and again in 2010. Bob and his wife Virginia retired from careers as civilian employees of the Suffolk County Police Department – Bob with the Quartermaster Section and Virginia with the Central Records Section. Virginia currently serves as the President of the Sons of Italy In America Andrea Doria Lodge # 2201 in Selden and is a Past President of the Selden Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Bob has continued to serve as a
Trustee on the board of the Brookhaven Volunteer Firefighters Museum for more than two decades and acts as the Museum’s Treasurer. When not donating his time and energy to these organizations, FASNY’s new President finds other venues for sharing fire-safety messages. At a recent Coram elementary school career day, Bob’s 9-year-old granddaughter Juliana and her schoolmates from 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades were introduced to future opportunities in the volunteer fire service. In his presentation, McConville stressed the importance of taking care of one another and said it’s never too early for youngsters to learn about responsibility. Mr. McConville commented, “I am looking forward to continuing and also implementing new initiatives to help FASNY members be the well-trained, well-prepared and healthy volunteers that New Yorkers have grown to depend upon for the protection of their lives and property. Our volunteer first responders are an important asset to all our neighborhoods and FASNY supports our communities when we support our volunteers.” - KEVIN CONN
