Elmont works two structure fires in two days BILLKELLY.SMUGMUG.COM

Building fire in North Bellmore On Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 1:30 a.m., the North Bellmore Fire Department was alerted for an automatic alarm at the Taste of Portugal Restaurant located at 493 Newbridge Road in East Meadow. Upon arrival, Chief of Department David Marschall was confronted with a heavy smoke condition coming from the store next to Taste of Portugal. The chief, after doing a quick

size up, was able to determine that there was a working fire in the rear of Papa Louie's Pizzeria. Shortly after, the rest of the chiefs and the first due engine and truck arrived. The first due crew was quickly able to knock down the fire and contain it to just the pizzeria.

The fire was placed under control within 40 minutes and there were no reported injuries to any firefighters or civilians. The East Meadow, Wantagh, Bellmore, North Merrick and Levittown Fire Departments were all called for mutual aid. - BILL KELLY

On Sunday, July 27 at approximately 1:36 p.m., Nassau County FireComm alerted the Elmont Fire Department for an "unknown" type fire at the northeast corner of Meacham and Journal Avenues. 1st Chief Chief Robert Schriefer arrived and immediately transmitted a Signal 10 (building fire). The fire, which apparently started in the rear of the building, spread to a wooden fence and a wood deck involving the rear structural portion of the building. Elmont members were able to make a quick stop limiting the damage. There were no reported injuries. On Monday, July 28 at 7:16

p.m., the Elmont Fire Department responded to a reported house fire on Russell Avenue. Arriving units reported fire in a two story dwelling located at 15 Russell Avenue. There was heavy fire on the first floor which extended to the second floor. Truck 1 and Engine 3 were first on the scene. The Nassau County Fire Marshal's office was requested to determine the cause and origin of the fire. - DAVID RAGUSA

Heavy rescue needed in Mastic On Saturday, September 27, 2014 at about 8:47 a.m., the Mastic Fire Department was requested to the scene of a motor vehicle accident “heavy rescue requested” at Mastic Road and Market Street. Upon arrival of the fire department, the Mastic Ambulance Company was treating the driver of each vehicle and requested that the door be taken off of the silver

Ford Focus. The Crew of Mastic’s Heavy Rescue 5-12-10 made quick work of removing the driver’s door and assisted the ambulance company in packaging that driver for transport.

Mastic Ambulance responded with 5-37-19 and a mutual aid ambulance from Mastic Beach 5-3919 also responded to the scene and transported the driver of the taxi involved. Both drivers were transported to BMH for treatment of their injuries. - KEVIN CONN

Upon arrival, Chief Andersen found two vehicles were involved, one of which ended up resting on a high voltage electrical transformer, which sustained damage. This required a response from PSE&G. Kevin J. O’Hara receives the New York State Harriet C. Weber EMS Leadership Award Fire Commissioner, Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin O'Hara of the North Merrick Fire Department has been awarded the prestigious Nassau County and New JUMP TO FILE # York State EMS 082614147 leadership award. He was selected by the NYS EMS awards committee from regional nominees throughout the entire State. Kevin has been a volunteer firefighter/paramedic in Nassau County over 40 years in addition to serving ten years as a fire commissioner. Kevin has always taken a leading role in EMS development within the fire department and Nassau County. He is a NYS certified EMS instructor and regional instructor faculty and has been instrumental in developing/maintaining the department’s EMS programs ensuring our department is providing quality care to the residents. Since 2006, Kevin has been the lead instructor for the Robbie Levine Foundation. The foundation was created by the parents of Robbie Levine, a nine year Merrick resident, who died from a cardiac arrest while playing little league. Kevin accepted the foundations challenge and with the assistance of the North Merrick Fire Department assumed responsibility for conducting CPR training enabling Robbie’s parents to create a nationally recognized foundation aimed at

educating the public on cardiac arrest procedures. Kevin, serving as the lead training coordinator, selflessly volunteered his time to form a partnership between the foundation and the North Merrick Fire Department. Over the past seven years, Kevin has personally trained over 2500 sports coaches and county/community residents in CPR and AED. These trained individuals have documented four life saves. Additionally, Kevin has trained numerous school teachers throughout our county to be certified CPR/AED instructors. These schools now have adopted CPR/AED training as part of their health program. Through Kevin's dedication, innovation and commitment, a family's goals were taken from a concept to becoming a reality. Kevin's continual leadership and management skills are second to none. His lifelong commitment to the fire and EMS community has exemplified his longevity, executive leadership and management skills. As a provider, leader and educator he has a very positive impact toward our county and communities pre-hospital providers. He has taught thousands of advanced technicians over the past 40 years therefore enabling our county's ambulances services to provide advanced level of care to its residents. Throughout his career, Kevin has always maintained EMS leadership roles. He has served as an elected official for two

Nassau County fire districts and has always ensured that his agencies were provided with state of art EMS equipment and provided the highest level of care to its residents. Kevin serves on numerous EMS professional committees including American Medical Association’s National Disaster Life Support Foundation and Nassau

Greenlawn hosts parade Greenlawn, NY On August 28, 2014, the Greenlawn Fire Department held their annual Labor Day Parade. The parade was attended by all of the fire and ambulance departments in the Town of Huntington and some from other towns. They marched down Broadway and ended at the fair where there were games and rides.

Bridgehampton handles working barn fire Bridgehampton, NY. On the early morning of September 28, 2014, 911 took a call for a ﬁre at 602 Townline Road. The Bridgehampton chief went enroute to the call. As he got closer to the scene, he could see a glow in the sky. He radioed back to Firecom to request manpower and an engine from Easthampton as well as Sag Harbor for a RIT team. After ﬁre units arrived, the chief cancelled all of his surrounding departments.

Firefighters battled the fire in the barn for over two hours. Bridgehampton firefighters remained on scene to hit all hot spots. The cause of the fire is unknown and fire marshals are investigating the cause. The barn was a total loss. - HAROLD JACOBS

Flander hosts fire prevention Flanders, NY. On September 28th, Flanders Fire Department displayed their fire truck, showed how fast a brush fire could spread and what trucks they use to get into the woods. Firefighters also demonstrated what happens when victims are trapped in a car and how they extricate them. Firefighters also doused a camper fire.

The Nassau County Fire Academy located in Old Bethpage, NY took delivery of a Ferrara Ultra Heavy Duty Engine. The vehicle was donated by Ferrara Fire Apparatus for use at the fire academy to train new firefighter recruits. The decision to donate the vehicle was made by Chris Ferrara after he toured the island after Super Storm Sandy and found out the academy didnt have a dedicated vehicle for this use.

Mastic handles two car MVA Mastic Beach, NY. On the morning of September 27, 2014, Mastic Fire Department and Mastic EMS were dispatched for a two car MVA at Mastic Road and Market Street. Arriving units found a cab and a car had collided. The cause of the MVA is unknown and being investigated by local officials. SCPD stayed on scene until all cars were cleared.

Fire in Melville garage Melville, Suffolk County, NY. The Melville Fire Department responded to a call for a house fire. Upon arrival, there was no visible signs of fire. They started a search and found a fully involved motorcycle in a detached garage, which also had a pool house in the front. There was also another motorcycle and three cars in the garage. The fire was quickly knocked down.

Overturn in Mastic with one transported Mastic, NY. On the night of October 2, 2014, the Mastic Fire Department and Mastic EMS were toned out for an overturn vehicle with someone trapped. Mastic EMS and Mastic Fire Department arrived on the scene within minutes and found that there were no victims trapped. FireďŹ ghters double checked the car and

found it was empty. The driver had gotten out of the vehicle and was walking around. Mastic EMS transported one person with minor injuries. Mastic Fire Department

checked for any hazards and were back in service within ten mintues of the call. Suffolk County ESU was requested to upright the car. The cause of the MVA was unknown and is under investigation. - HAROLD JACOBS

The Southampton Fire Department was called out to a motor vehicle accident at 10:49 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3rd. It was reported as a vehicle into the building with occupants trapped. Upon arrival, it was determined that a male subject inside the residence was able to free himself from the wreckage and safely get out. The two subjects in the vehicle safely got out with assistance from emergency personnel. One subject was transported by Southampton volunteer ambulance and two subjects were transported by Southampton Village

Ambulance. Mutual aid was requested from North Sea Fire Department heavy rescue. Chief Billy Rosko from North Sea Fire Department was on scene. Car into house in Bohemia On Wednesday, August 27th at 9:58 p.m. the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a motor vehicle accident; car into a house on Kenwood Ave. Upon arrival, Chief Richard Andersen found that the driver of the grey car, lost control and crashed into a black pick-up truck that was parked in the driveway.

The impact caused the truck to become partially imbedded in the home. Responding units included Assistant Chief Sterling Haynes, Rescue 8, Truck 4 and Engine 7.

Due to structural damage to the dwelling, the Islip Town Fire Marshal responded to survey the damage to the building. The driver of the car was not injured. However, several cars which were parked in the driveway sustained damage. - FRANK NUZZO
