Firefighter injured battling Baldwin blaze One firefighter suffered minor burn injuries and a South Baldwin family was left homeless after an early morning fire broke out in their Verity Lane home on Friday morning June 28th, 2013. At 1:13 a.m., the North Bellmore Fire Communications Center, 650 alerted the Baldwin Fie Department to a report of a house fire at 3042 Verity Lane. Chief of Department Roberet Brancato was advised that the caller was reporting a fire in the ceiling. Moments later, the dispatcher reported a second call reporting an attic fire. Chief Brancato found a large two story high ranch, private dwelling with smoke showing. He ordered his first due engine to lay a supply line and stretch a line to the second floor. Members reported heavy smoke on the second

floor and fire in the attic. The fire self-vented and began showing from the roof. A signal 10, working fire, was transmitted and the mutual aid plan implemented, bringing a FAST truck from Freeport. First due Engine 202 stretched a one and three quarter inch hand line to the second floor and Ladder 206 split their crew between searches and opening up on the interior with roof ventilation. Engine 203 relayed water to E-202 and their manpower assisted in stretching an additional hand line. E-201’s crew stretched an additional line on arrival while L207 searched the first floor and then opened up the second floor
ceiling to allow the engines access. All visible fire was knocked down within 20 minutes and the fire was soon under control. One firefighter suffered minor burn injuries during the initial attack and was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment. Mutual aid ambulances from Oceanside, which transported the injured member, and South Hempstead responded. Companies from Oceanside, Freeport and Point Lookout covered Baldwin’s response area. The cause of the fire, which left the family homeless and in the care of the Red Cross, is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal. - FRED KOPF

Bellmore blaze during heat wave On the afternoon of July 21, 2013 at approximately 2:15 p.m., the Bellmore Fire Department was toned out for a blaze at 2137 Johnson Place. Nassau police arrived to find fire showing at the residence and advised enroute crews. North Bellmore was alerted as the FAST crew while North Merrick and Wantagh arrived at Bellmore headquarters to standby. Firefighters quickly worked to extinguish the blaze. The likely cause of the fire seems to be electrical as it involved the electrical source to the home. Fire marshals were on scene for the investigation.

gine 201 were tasked with containing a fluid spill from the second auto. Members of Truck One successfully removed the door and the victim was removed from the auto and taken by Baldwin Fire Department ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. Autos that were being worked on at the time of the fie contributed to the intense fire.
Three alarm fire ravages Roosevelt neighborhood Roosevelt, NY. Firefighters from over a dozen fire departments battled an intense, fast moving, three alarm fire that destroyed that two Babylon Turnpike businesses, damaged several adjacent structures and forced the evacuation of several homes on August 28, 2013. At 12:06 p.m., Dispatcher 30 alerted the Roosevelt Fire Department to a report of a garage fire at 154 Babylon Turnpike. Nassau County officers reported a working fire. Roosevelt fire units found the Alfonso’s auto repair garage belching volumes of black smoke from the one story 100x75 cement structure with fire threatening exposure four, a one story 60x40 brick auto body shop. A signal 10 was transmitted and Chief Riddick ordered Fire Com to retransmit the working fire. A mutual aid FAST team from North Merrick was assigned. Engine 737’s members immediately stretched a 2 ½ inch hose line to attack the fire, which was being fueled by petroleum products inside the garage and autos that were under repair.
JUMP TO FILE #083013118
A second line was stretched and put into operation and a mutual aid engine from Uniondale was requested. Roosevelt Tower Ladder 735prepared for master stream operations. Despite the aggressive attack, the fire was rapidly spreading to exposure four, Defer Auto Body, a one story, 60x40, auto body shop. Chief Riddick ordered a second alarm bringing units from the Hempstead. Due to the heavy smoke condition, police officers began evacuating homes to the rear. As the officers evacuated the homes, the fire began to spread to three residential garages on Ellison Avenue. Mutual aid from Baldwin handled those fires. A decision was made based on deteriorating conditions to go to an exterior attack. Tower Ladder 735 put their bucket into operation and used their deck gun to attack and darken down the fire. As the fire raged on, a third alarm brought additional mutual aid.

Tower Ladder 735’s master stream darkened down most of the fire in the original fire building. Three hand lines operated at Alfonso’s while two lines were used inside exposure four, Defer Auto Body to extinguish tha fire. Companies operating on Ellison Avenue used several hand lines to extinguish the fire that involved the three residential garages and the extension to one private dwelling. Due to numerous traveling cracks in the original fire building and exposure four, heavy construction equipment was brought in to demolish the building and allow firefighters to extinguish pockets of fire that they were unable to reach. The fire was declared under control in the late afternoon. Firefighters from Elmont, Hempstead, South Hempstead, Uniondale, East Meadow, Merrick, North Bellmore, North Merrick, Baldwin, Freeport, Oceanside and Rockville Centre either operated at the fie or covered Roosevelt’s District. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the blaze, with officials eyeing a welding mishap as the cause, which eventually destroyed two businesses and damaged one private dwelling and three residential garages. No serious injuries were reported and Roosevelt firefighters secured from the scene at 8:03 p.m. after seven hours and fifty seven minutes of operations. - FRED KOPF
