On August 26, 2014, a woman driving a white sedan lost control of her vehicle. She apparently jumped the curb, drove through the bushes and crossed Bellmore Avenue. The vehicle then hit two cars, pushing one of those vehicles as well as her vehicle into the 7-11 parking lot. Both drivers were entrapped in their vehicles. Two ESU units arrived at the scene and extricated both drivers using four tools at the same time. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital by Bellmore and Nassau County Police Ambulance. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

EMS technicians. We provide all levels of pre-hospital care up to and including the highest paramedic level. The NMFD has always provided excellent EMS care to the residents of our town. All of our department chiefs are required to be NYS EMT's and maintain this certification through their tenure, a statement that can't be made by many departments in this cou nty or throughout New York State We have a very active community preparedness program through our training partnership with Merrick’s Robbie Levine Foundation. This partnership has enabled us to better prepare our community and the surrounding areas communities to handle cardiac related EMS emergencies. To date, the department, through the Robbie Levine Foundation, has trained over a 1000 residents in CPR therefore potentially increasing car-

diac arrest survivability. We are consistently called upon to educate our county residents. The NMFD strives to be a model volunteer agency through our in-house training programs, public outreach CPR programs while not losing any focus on maintaining our number one priority of providing top quality patient care. We have always actively participated in every New York State pre-hospital EMS program with the full support of our system medical director, Dr. Jay Yelon. The chiefs, officers and members of the NMFD are very proud being honored as Nassau County’s EMS Agency of the Year and wish to thank all residents for their continual support. A special thanks to all our membership for their dedication and commitment. This is the second time the department has received this award, which will be officially presented in October at the Nassau County REMAC annual awards - NORTH MeRRiCk FiRe DePARTMeNT

West Sayville Flying Dutchmen capture second title of season When you consider the average time for a blink of the eye ranges from one-tenth to four-tenths of a second according to the Harvard Database of Useful Biological Num-bers, the one-hundredth JUMP TO FILE # of a second differ- 080414115 ence the Flying Dutchmen Drill Team of the West Sayville Fire Department experienced in three separate contests seems incompre-hensible. But happen it did in the Motor Hook & Ladder Class B, Motor Hose Class C and Motor Hose Class B events at the 28th Annual Invitation Tournament hosted by the Riverhead Fire Department on July 19.

In each instance, this slimmest of margins nudged them out of first place finishes. In the end, the three lost points did not hamper an otherwise good day when West Sayville bested its twelve competitors with two first place finishes and four second place efforts, three of those being the result of the hundredth of a second difference, to claim first place overall in the drill with twenty-six points. The Piston Knockers of North Lindenhurst ended up second, four and one-half points behind the Flying Dutchmen, while the seventeen points of the Islip Wolves put them third overall on the leader board. The East Islip Guzzlers and Central Islip Hoboes rounded out the top five with thirteen and one-half and twelve points respectively. The Flying Dutchmen earned

their points at the Riverhead Drill with first place runs in C Ladder (8.86 seconds) and Buckets (20.99 seconds) and second place finishes in the Three Man Ladder (6.34 seconds), B Ladder (5.21 seconds), C Hose (12.82 se-conds) and B Hose (7.89 seconds) contests. The 2014 Flying Dutchmen Drill Team is coached by Frank R. Miller, Sr., Robert Marra and G.
