MVA ON SUNRISE HIGHWAY

At 4:30 p.m. on July 10, the Massapequa Fire Department received a call for an MVA on Sunrise Highway east of Broadway. Ladder 632 and Ambulances 637 and 638 responded to the scene along with Chiefs 6301, 6302 and 6303. Responding units found that two cars and a gasoline tanker truck were involved in the accident. - See more info on page 2

Auto shop fire in South Huntington South Huntington, NY. On July 27, 2013, the Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to a auto shop fire on New York Avenue. First on the scene was 3rd Assistant Chief John Hoffmann. He saw that the Tilden Car Care Center was fully involved and called for mutual aid from the Huntington and Greenlawn Fire Departments. Over 80 firefighters and 12 trucks were used during the fire-

ﬁght. This was an exterior attack because there were still cars inside and the roof was not safe. Chief Fred Steenson Jr. had command. Asst. Chief Frank McQuade and Asst. Jon Hoffmann also assisted in running the operation. The Huntington Community

First Aid Squad was at the scene and transported a worker, who sustained burns, from the auto shop to the nearest hospital. There were also a few ﬁreﬁghters who suffered from heat exhaustion. The Dix Hills Fire Department stoodby at Huntington Manor's headquarters.

MVA in Melville Melville, NY. On July 6, 2013, the Melville Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident where a car was cut off by two motorcycles and was hit by the car behind it. The motorcycles never stopped, but pieces of them were found at the scene. Melville Fire Rescue transported two females to the hospital.

MVA on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa At 4:30 p.m. on July 10th, the Massapequa Fire Department received a call for an MVA on Sunrise Highway east of Broadway. Ladder 632 and Ambulances 637 and 638 responded to the scene along with Chiefs 6301, 6302 and 6303. Responding units found that two cars and a gasoline tanker truck were involved in the accident. The tanker truck did not sustain any damage causing leakage of fuel. A Nassau County Police Ambulance transported one injured and both fire department ambulances transported one each to local hospitals. All the injured were from the cars involved.

Car into woods in Melville Melville, NY. On July 10, 2013, the Melville Fire Department responded to the Long Island Expressway to a report of a motor vehicle accident. The Melville Fire Department found the car off into the woods. The driver was an off duty NYPD officer, who stated that she was cut off and spun around, landing in the woods. Put in full immobilization, the driver was taken to the hospital by The Melville Fire Department Rescue Ambulance.

Brush fire in Southampton The Southampton Fire Department was called out to the report of a brush fire at the end of Black Watch Court in Shinnecock Hills on July 16th at 3:45 in the afternoon. Crews quickly extinguished the blaze and the Southampton town fire marshals office is investigating. A brush truck and mini pumper along with two tankers were utilized.

Blue Point Fire Department responds to heavy rescue On Monday, July 15th, 2013, the Blue Point Fire Department and Patchogue Ambulance Company responded to a reported heavy rescue with a vehicle into a house. The accident occurred at the intersection of Madison Street and Corey Avenue. One patient was extricated from a classic 1963 Pontiac by the members of Rescue 10 and Engine 2. A total of three patients were transported to area hospitals.

Mangano congratulates Hicksville Bellmore, NY. Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano congratulated the Hicksville Volunteer Fire Department on their victory at the Nassau County Firefighters Parade and Drill. County Executive Mangano thanked the Bellmore Fire Department for hosting this year’s festivities. Firefighters from an estimated 50 fire departments competed in the championship parade and drills.

Huntington Manor parade Huntington Station, NY. On July 17, 2013, the Huntington Manor Fire Department held their annual parade and fair. Departments from all over the Town of Huntington came and marched. The streets were lined with people from all over cheering for all the Ffreﬁghters and EMS departments for therir service. Every year at 9:30 three nights in a row, the HMFD puts on a professional ﬁreworks show.

Apartment fire in Hempstead On the evening of June 12, the Hempstead Fire Department was toned out for a report of an apartment fire in the 3-G apartment. Three lines were stretched and two were in operation. In all, four residents were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries and one firefighter was transported with heat exhaustion. The fire was placed under control in approximately 30 minutes. Mutual aid was provided by West Hempstead, South Hempstead, Baldwin, and Rockville Centre. Ambulances were requested from Mineola Vol. Ambulance, Freeport, Baldwin, North Bellmore, and East Meadow.

Cat revived at bedroom fire in North Merrick The North Merrick Fire Department was toned out minutes into July 15th for a house fire at 1621 East Drive. Fire Com notified the North Merrick chief of a fire within a bedroom. First Assistant Chief Rogers (6701) was the first chief on the scene. He reported a Signal 10 for a fire in the rear bedroom. He immediately requested mutual aid to standby at Merrick's headquarters, including Roosevelt, East Meadow, Merrick and Freeport. At the scene was North Bellmore as the FAST team. East Meadow arrived to put a truck to work. Roosevelt and Merrick were also called to put engines to work. A cat was revived by firefighters at the scene. The fire is under investigation by fire marshals.

Mangano joined Honorary Chief Peter Schmalenberger, at the start of the Nassau County Volunteer Firefighters Parade & Drill. Peter became the Bellmore Fire Department’s First Full Honorary Chief in 1996 after having served as a volunteer for over 50 years. South Hempstead house fire MARK OSHINSKY

Two transported in Melville Melville, NY. On July 23, 2013, the Melville Fire Department responded to an MVA where an SUV hit another SUV and then hit a tree. The drivers of both SUVs were transported to the hospital by the Melville Fire Department Ambulance.

On Monday, July 29, 2013 at 9:33 a.m., the South Hempstead Fire Department was alerted for a reported basement fire on Fern St, between Maple and Hempstead Ave. Ex-Chief Paul Cartier was first on the scene and transmitted smoke showing. After helping the elderly male resident and his aide outside the residence, Ex-Chief Cartier went back in to further investigate. With smoke banking down a third of the way on the first floor, the door to the basement was opened to reveal a basement fully charged with smoke, with what sounded to be water running. First Assistant Chief Anthony DePellegrin radioed that he was re-

sponding and that the house at that address was that of a member of his family. Hempstead Fire Department Chief Scott Clark was in the vicinity and stopped to render assistance. At this time, a working fire was transmitted. South Hempstead Engine 741 responded as the first engine and was able to make a quick entry into the basement and extinguish the fire. It was later found to be that some old spray cans, paint and minerals may have been the cause of the fire. The fire must have been

burning for a little while as it weakened one of the water pipes to the point that it gave way and actually sprayed water on the fire keeping it contained until the SHFD could extinguish it the rest of the way. The occupants realized they had a fire when the smoke alarm on the first floor was activated. Mutual aid was provided at the scene by neighboring departments from Hempstead, Baldwin and Rockville Centre. Lakeview and West Hempstead Fire Departments responded to South Hempstead headquarters on May Street to standby in the event of any additional alarms. - BILL KELLY

Accident in Melville sends two to hospital Melville, NY. On July 18, 2013, the Melville Fire Department responded to a two car MVA. One of the cars rearended the other. The drivers of both vehicles were fully immobilized and taken to the hospital by the Melville Fire Department ambulance.

Jeep rolls several times ejecting driver Melville/Plainview, NY - On July 19, 2013, the Melville and Plainview Fire Departments responded to a motor vehicle accident on the line of both fire districts. A woman who was driving a Jeep Wrangler was cut off by a car and she hit the back of a truck. Witnesses said that the Wrangler rolled about eight times, sending the woman flying out of her car. She was taken to a level one trauma center by the Melville Fire Department Ambulance.

Southampton responds to MVA On July 8, 2013, the Southampton Fire Department along with the Southampton Village Ambulance were called out to an MVA with possible entrapment at 5:31 p.m. It was on North Sea Road near Lynchs Garden Center. The first unit on scene reported no entrapment. Crews were utilized for speedy dry for leaking fluids and traffic control. Southampton village ambulance transported two subjects to Southampton Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The scene was clear in approximately one hour. Southampton’s 1st Asst. Chief Mike Kampf was in charge of the scene.

In their efforts to provide quality care to the residents of their communities many these volunteers spend many hours training and developing their skills. On June 29th, the Bohemia Fire Department christened their newest apparatus, a Piece engine. Among the other new trucks that were part of the wetdown were 32’s new chief’s car Chevy Tahoe, Rescue 10- BRAT, Fire Police 19-BRAT on a Ford F-450 Chassis, Brush/Rescue 15 BRAT, Truck 4-75 ft Pierce Quint, Rescue 8 Pierce, Engine 1- 1750 GPM Pierce. Structure collapse in Baldwin requires mutual aid On the night of July 16th at approximately 10 p.m., Baldwin responded to 1008 Woodpark Drive to the report of a collapse of a rear extension to a house. However, the residents were unaware of the collapse and neighbors called the fire department. Mutual aid responded from Freeport for a heavy rescue tactical team Rescue 2172 to shore up the collapsed section of the home. Baldwin Engine 204 stretched a line to the rear of the house for precautionary measures. There was a propane barbecue

grill crushed under the collapsed portion of the house. Luckily, no one was trapped under the debris. The Town of Hempstead Buildings Department was called to investigate the integrity of the structure. Freeport Fire Departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1906 Christie Steam Pumper

East Farmingdale, NY. On July 10, 2013, the East Farmingdale Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident, where there was a head on collision and one car had also hit a tree. The driver of that car had to be removed from his vehicle using the Hurst tool. He was fully immobilized and taken to the hospital by East Farmingdale Fire Ambulance. The driver of the other car was treated at the scene.
