Buffalo firefighters responded just before 10 a.m. on December 1, 2012 to 112 Humason Avenue on the city’s east side. Arriving crews reported an occupied one and a half story wood frame with heavy smoke pushing from the second floor and attic windows with fire showing in the rear of the structure.

Dog dies in Lakeville house fire Lakeville, NY. On Sunday night, December 2, Lakeville, Livonia and Hemlock Fire departments were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 4336 East Lake Road. First arriving fire units found heavy smoke coming from the residence. No one was home at the time of the fire. Unfortunately, a dog was found dead by firefighters inside the house and another was able to escape unharmed. The blaze was brought quickly under control. There were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management and the Livingston County Sheriff's office.

Cars in lot damaged On December 2, 2012 at approximately 12:30 p.m., a pick up truck struck a sedan and veered into cars in a used car lot.

Good-Will Fire Department responded to the scene and took care of all hazards. Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services also responded. No injuries were reported and they were quickly back in service.

MVA down embankment for Chelsea and Rombout Fishkill, NY. Rombout Fire Company was dispatched for a mutual aid call to Chelsea Fire Department for a single car motor vehicle accident at 6:41 p.m. on JUMP TO FILE # November 15.

111912108 Responding units found a compact car on the westbound lane of Interstate 84 down an 50 feet embankment, with one adult male trapped inside.

The victim was extricated, who was then loaded into a stokes basket to be carried up the steep incline for transportation to St. Francis Hospital

by Beacon Volunteer Ambulance.

The victim suffered non-life threating injuries and needed evaluation for a medical condition he experienced while driving.

Buffalo firefighters of the 7th Battalion 4th Platoon were called out to battle an occupied structure at 145 Austin St. in Buffalo's Black Rock section on November 26. Firefighters made a quick stop to the fire that caused $35,000 damage to the one and a half story frame house. The cause of the fire is under investigation and no injuries were reported. Firefighters used two-one and three quarter inch hand lines and 14 feet of ladders.

by Red Cross Buffalo firefighters of the 3rd Battalion 3rd Platoon were called out to battle a blaze at 383 Smith Street on Buffalo's East Side on December 4. Firefighters used two-one and three quarter inch hand lines to contain the blaze. Damage was listed at $7,000. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The Red Cross was called for one adult.

Co-Captain EMT Dottie Carroll and members of the Grand Gorge Rescue Squad presented a volunteer recruitment program at Gilboa Conesville Central School on October 10, 2012.

The presentation to Gilboa’s junior class stu- JUMP TO FILE # dents began with 101812108 the need for volunteers and how young people can make a difference.

The personal satisfaction of helping friends and neighbors was highlighted. Legislation that provides NYS tax credits for fire and EMS volunteers was emphasized.

A brief explanation of the training requirements for different levels of training beginning with certified first responders, EMTs and paramedics was provided.

Students were also provided a “hands-on” review of the many pieces of equipment used when responding to emergencies.

Several of the Gilboa students are currently involved in their local fire departments. After the presentation, the students had a chance to do a walk through of the squad’s 2006 Horton Ford ambulance.

Tractor trailer versus car on interstate Town of Newburgh, NY - At approximately 2:50 p.m. on December 4, 2012, Winona Lake Engine Company and the Town of Newburgh Emergency Services were toned out for a two vehicle accident on Interstate 84. Crews arrived to find a tractor trailer had rear-ended a passenger vehicle. Luckily, all walked away without injuries.

Three occupants escape, two injured Buffalo firefighters of the 4th Battalion 3rd Platoon were called out to battle a fire in a rear cottage at 303 1/2 Plymouth Ave. on Buffalo's west side on December 6, 2012. Three occupants escaped the home. Two received burns and were taken by ambulance to the hospital. Firefighters faced heavy fire throughout the structure. Division Chief Patrick Brittzalaro requested a second alarm as the number three side exposure house was threatened. Four-two and a half inch and three-one and three quarter inch hand lines were used. Because the house was between two other structures, an aerial truck could not be used. 30 feet of ground ladders were used.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the Red Cross was called for three adults. Damage was $80,000 to the structure and contents.

Moyers Corners responds to fully involved vacant

The Moyers Corners Fire Department was alerted to a reported vacant house fire near the intersection of Wetzel Road and Henry Clay Boulevard. Onondaga County Fire Control indicated that a caller could see fire from the rear of the structure.

Car 3, Chief Crispin, reported a working fire in a vacant house and that crews would be operating on the exterior of the structure.

Chief Zaferakis assumed operations.

Engine 31 brought in the hydrant on Henry Clay Boulevard and stretched a two and a half inch handline. Engine 21 stretched a two inch handline from Engine 31.

Engine 41 brought in the hydrant approximately 800 feet down Wetzel Road and fed water to Truck 2. Their crew stretched an inch and three quarter handline.

Ladder 1 positioned on the A side of the building with Truck 2.

Engine 31 fed Ladder 1's master stream.

Crews made an exterior attack using the three handlines followed by elevated master streams from Truck 2 and Ladder 1.

Rescue 4 was assigned to RIT. The fire was knocked down within 45 minutes and all crews were in service by 6:30 a.m.

Santa (aka Tony Donato) rode on Washingtonville's ladder at the Annual Holiday Lights Parade. Santa's ride ended at the village square, where he lit the Christmas tree.

Six firefighters names were added to the granite wall this year.

Chimney fire in Town of Newburgh Town of Newburgh, NY - On November 25, 2012, Winona Lake Engine Company crews were called to a furnace malfunction that filled three apartments with smoke at 1180 Union Avenue.

It quickly became apparent that the chimney was clogged, at about two feet off the ground. Chains and the ladder truck were used to unclog the condition.

Early morning blaze Buffalo firefighters of the 4th Battalion 4th Platoon were called out to battle an early morning blaze at 404 W. Utica St. on the city's west side on the morning of December 8, 2012.

The fire was on the first floor and confined to the same.

Two-one and three quarter inch hand lines were used. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Four blazes for the second platoon Buffalo firefighters of the 4th Battalion 2nd Platoon were called out to battle a structure fire at 47 Barton St. for a fire in a two story frame dwelling the fire started in the floor between the first and second floors on November 17, 2012.

The fire caused $15,000.00 in damage and no injuries were reported.

countered for the night shift of the 17th. Later that evening, the 4th Battalion was again called out for a fire in a large two and a half frame dwelling at 623 Breckenridge Ave. in Buffalo's Elmwood Village.

Two flown out in Town of Newburgh

Teen killled in Marlboro crash

Town of Newburgh, NY - Two patients were flown out after a motor vehicle crash on Route 32 in the Town of Newburgh on November 17. Cronomer Valley firefighters arrived to find a vehicle decimated by the crash and proceeded to package and prepare the patients for transport. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Marlboro, NY - At approximately 3:30 a.m. on December 1, a Marlboro teen lost her life when she was ejected from a vehicle. Marlboro and Milton Fire Departments were toned out to a motor vehicle accident on Western Avenue. Firefighters and EMT's from the Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services arrived to find a sixteen year old female ejected from the vehicle. Two additional injuries occurred, the driver and an additional passenger. Apparently, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a utility pole. Investigators are trying to determine if a blown tire could be factors in the crash. According to published reports, speed does not seem to be a factor.

We are still in need of cold weather gear, (hats, gloves, socks, boots,) for the members. We also need paging systems for the departments. We have supplied these departments with temporary communications, however, they have no way to contact their members in the event of a call. Roof alarms, pagers, etc.

Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department at 53 Seba Ave, Brooklyn NY is in desperate need of assistance. Their fire department was totaled in the flood from Sandy. Their one and only engine is out of service due to salt water damage to the electrical system.

Their TOG was soaked in salt water and sewage backup. Any help would be awesome. They are the only volunteer department in Brooklyn.

The Glen Oaks Volunteer Ambulance Corps was having a supply drive to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Donations were being accepted at their headquarters on Union Turnpike in Floral Park, NY. Please call them at 718347-1647 for more information.

We were advised that Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department lost a fire truck when it caught fire. West Hamilton Beach Fire Department lost two trucks, two ambulances, a brush truck and a chief truck. A department in PA kindly donated a truck to them.

The Berlin Volunteer Fire Department located at 700 North Street, Berlin, PA (Somerset County, Pennsylvania) is donating one of their equipped fire engines to the storm ravaged West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department in Queens, NY. The receiving volunteer fire department lost everything during

Hurricane Sandy. The Fire Chief, Fire Department President along with a fire truck driver from the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department will be driving the fire truck from Berlin to New York on November 16th.

Berlin Area Ambulance Association, Inc. is donating various emergency medical equipment such as stretchers, splints and back boards.

An 18 wheeler brought relief supplies to the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. Supplies, including palettes of water, non-perishable foods as well as other items, were trucked from the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Columbia, SC. The coordinated effort was made possible by Rich and Nadine Demczyszyn as well as several other first responders. Their coordinated efforts can be viewed on their Facebook page, Immediate supplies for NJ EMS and Fire Depts affected by Hurricane Sandy.

While responding to a call on November 24, one of Point Breeze Fire Department’s 4x4 engines had an electrical fire in the crew cab.

The apparatus is in desperate need of replacement as it operated in six feet of sewage/saltwater during Sandy. Please help if you can.

As the holidays approach and we move from the rescue and recovery operation, to the rebuilding phase; I would like to thank everyone for their help and support, and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

As you know, the next phase can be a long and tedious one, and can take a toll on our rescue workers. The NYSVARA and the NYSVARA, District 4 are dedicated to these agencies, our members and will continue to offer support and assistance.

During this rebuilding phase, we are still in need of basic medical supplies, including pediatric items. District 4 has also joined with NYS Assemblyman Michael

Millers Office and Kiwanis to collect unwrapped toys for the children affected by the hurricane.

This effort will help not only rebuild the agencies affected, but will also help in rebuilding the communities and the relationships between these agencies and their communities.

Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Services from around the state and country collected equipment, collected donations, and offered support. These companies coordinated local and county wide collections, packed trucks and delivered items to the District 4 receving facility.

Special thanks to the volunteers who helped on a daily basis receving donations, packaging, loading and delivering donations, and continue to offer support.

Moonachie seeks help During the night of hurricane Sandy, the members of the Moonachie Fire Department were out operating at numerous emergencies across the town when the unthinkable happened and would change the history of the Moonachie Fire Department and the borough of Moonachie.

While members were returning from a run around 2300 hours, they noticed water rapidly rising on East Joseph Street heading into the town and right to fire headquarters. Within minutes, water was rushing into the firehouse, giving the members very little time to remove apparatus and personal items.

The water rose so high and so rapidly most of the towns including fire headquarters were under between 3 and 6 feet of water in under an hour. Members and apparatus found higher ground in another town, so they could assist in rescue operations with other Moonachie agencies and numerous mutual aide companies.

Members operated overnight and into the next day even knowing most of their homes where severely flooded. When the water receded, companies returned to fire headquarters to find total devastation.

Water levels in the firehouse were near six feet, causing severe damage to radios, computers, turnout gear, personal items and several pieces of apparatus including our 1953 Ahrens Fox pumper. The apparatus could not be removed in time due to the rapidly rising water.

Due to the extent of the damage, MFD has a temporary firehouse which we are making due with, but we need to rebuild our Moonachie Road firehouse.

Worchester Area Fires, 1990’s, Vol.1 VIDEO REVIEW Video reviews by John Malecky

This is an 84 minute DVD that had been converted from VHS. We get a little bit of nostalgia from over 20 years ago.

There are eight fires, seven of which occur in Worchester and one in Oxford, Massachusetts. All of the fires are at night or early morning just before dawn.

The Oxford fire is in a lumber yard that is pretty much gone when the camera started running.

There is heavy fire and smoke from debris burning on the ground with a collapsed building nearby. A platform and ladderpipe operate from above along with handlines.

The first Worchester fire is a little puzzling because it has an unknown date and location. It is of a restaurant, the fire of which appears to be pretty much knocked down with handlines stretched and crews venting with light smoke conditions. Perhaps it was taken from a VHS and patched in to the DVD. Another lumber yard fire required a fifth alarm assignment with heavy fire showing and heavy streams and handlines operating.

A four story frame apartment house is the scene of a fourth alarm with fire showing through the cockloft and also on the third floor. An aerialscope and aerial ladder operate with a second scope arriving soon afterward.

Just about all of the top half of the outer walls are scorched. The fire eventually goes through the roof.

Next, a third alarm involves the top floor of a multi-family dwelling with flames “going good.” It is fought with handlines, with flames eventually going through the roof.

A working fire in a Victorian style multi-family house needed two aerialscopes and an aerial operation to subdue. Flames show behind window openings and they later break out.

In another incident a frame dwelling is hit by heavy fire on the top floor. Another aerialscope operation.

The last operation involved a second alarm in a three story frame dwelling with heavy fire.

Flames are reaching for the sky!

An aerialscope operates here as well!

To summarize, there is no narration and the camera does not move around much. Very little of the fireground is viewed other than the flames and the immediate surroundings.

FASNY Gives 50K Grant to NVFC Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund to Help Volunteers Impacted by Sandy Every day, volunteer firefighters and emergency personnel put their lives on the line to protect their communities, but what happens when the tragedy strikes home? Many first responders are impacted each year by disasters such as hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, and others. These men and women dedicate themselves to serving their communities. When their homes and families are affected by tragedy, they rely on the community to give back.

The National Volunteer Fire Council’s (NVFC) Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund provides a stipend of $250 to

volunteer first responders whose homes have been impacted by a largescale disaster. The stipend helps these firefighters and emergency personnel meet their basic needs in the aftermath of the disaster. However, the requests received in the wake of Super Storm Sandy exceeded the availability of funds.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has stepped up to support first responders in need by awarding a grant of $50,000 to the NVFC Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund. FASNY joins the NVFC in asking others to help support the fund.

Fire-Dex Donates $100,000 worth of gloves

According to FASNY Director to the NVFC, David Jacobowitz, there are many unfunded requests currently awaiting donations. Help these first responders in need by contributing to the NVFC Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund.

“To date, the NVFC Volunteer Firefighter Support fund has helped over a hundred volunteer firefighters impacted by Sandy, totaling over $31,000 in donations,” said FASNY President Jim Burns. “FASNY felt that it was important to replenish the funds in order to help more volunteers that need support after the storm.”

“We are grateful for FASNY’s generous contribution and are thrilled to be able to continue helping volunteers who have been struck by a devastating tragedy such as Super Storm Sandy,” said NVFC Executive Director Heather Schafer. “These volunteers need assistance to get back on their feet. We hope FASNY’s contribution will inspire others to give as well so we can keep providing support to those who protect their communities every day.”

West Long Branch Chief Ron Guidetti helped schedule vehicles in for service to reduce out of service time, and helped shuttle units back and forth from their stations.

"This was an incredible effort on all parts, with more than 25 units fully serviced in less than eight hours.

During a recent visit from New Orleans fire fighters to our area, we learned from their experience in Hurricane Katrina the types of long term problems to expect with appa-

ratus exposed to sea water, and with KME's help, we tried to help our customers get ahead of the curve with these long term issues".

On November 10th, PA State Police escorted a caravan of KME service units and Carbon County vehicles with nearly two full tractor trailer loads of donated goods for the citizens of Sea Bright. Off loading was a half day event by an army of Kevin Steber supporters, as well as local National Guard, OEM personnel, fire fighters and first responders.

Carbon County's efforts were welcomed personally by rock and roll legend Jon Bon Jovi, a local resident who has been active in relief efforts.

Chief Murphy commented "We can't thank Kevin, KME and First Priority enough. From the first moments of the storm, they have been here for the department and our citizens.

Pretty much everything in our town was wiped out, and it is nice to know these people don't just want our business, they are friends for life". First Priority President Bob Freeman noted "It really is an honor to pitch in a help our friends in times of disaster. Frankly, unless you have been here personally, you can't get the true sense of the magnitude of destruction or the sense of loss these communities are going through. It will be a long road back, but First Priority intends to be there for our customers for the long haul".

Chili Ambulance dedicates rig to long time firefighter/EMT The Chili Ambulance Service placed a 2013 Ford E450 into service on November 18, 2012. It is powered by a gas burning V10 and is equipped with a Marque body. It features a Stryker powered gurney to reduce back injuries, an all LED lighting package inside and out, a visibility safety package including new mandated chevron striping on the rear of the vehicle. To transport children safely, it also is equipped with integrated child seat. Additionally, state of the art radio systems, Knox Box and medical equipment outfitted the new ambulance.

Formed in 1949 as a part of the Chili Fire Department, the rescue squad first consisted of firefighters. In 2006, the Chili Ambulance became it's own agency. In 2009, it completed it's separation from the fire department and operated from it's new building, the former Ray Sands Glass.

Director of Operations Bill Arnold says the split from the fire department was necessary "based on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement" and was a business decision. From 2011 to 2012, the corp has seen about an 8% increase in call volume and is projected to respond to 2500 calls by

year’s end. They have 41 volunteer members supplemented by about 15 paid EMTs. They are always looking for personnel to volunteer their time, and training is provided free.

On November 30, 2012, the corp dedicated the ambulance (unit number 4339) to past Battalion Chief Keith Schwab. Keith passed away this fall from a heart attack after serving for over 40 years. Keith studied for what they were then called Medical Emergency Technician at MCC. He then became a Category II EMT in the 80's, having the ability to start IV's and insert advanced airway devices into patients.

Chili was the only agency on the west side to have this ability.

He served the rescue squad and ambulance as lieutenant, captain, battalion chief and as a director on their board.

He instituted an observer program and was instrumental in having AED's placed on ambulances.

In addition to all of this, he continued to serve at the fire department, was an avid camper, parishioner at St. Pius X Church and most importantly a dedicated

Laugh your way to the bank with a stand-up comedy fund-raiser

Washington County pin job On November 10th, the Washington County Department of Public Safety 911 Center received a report of a vehicle versus tractor and manure spreader accident on County Route 30 in East Hartford. The Hartford Fire Company, Argyle Emergency Squad and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the vehicle rolled over in the roadway with entrapment.

Aeromedical transport was placed on standby.

Car 3402 confirmed one vehicle on its side in the middle of County Route 30. Extrication would be needed. J.A. Barkley Hose Company was requested.

The 64 year old operator of the vehicle was conscious, alert, and breathing and pinned under the dashboard, complaining of lower extremity pain.

Upon removal of the patient from the vehicle, he was transferred over to Argyle EMS Ambulance 2151 and transported to the landing zone and transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital for treatment.

Who needs to laugh more than the Fire Companies ---the first responders who deal with dangerous circumstances each and every day?

There’s an innovative concept for fund-raising developed by Joey Novick, who is a stand-up comedian and the Fire Commissioner in his hometown: Stand-up comedy shows.

Fire companies can get much-needed laughs and profit financially as well.

Novick's company, ComedyWorks, provides all-star headline comedians from HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime, Last Comic Standing, and the Tonight Show.

Novick’s been producing comedy shows since 1977, and has experience producing shows with such comedians as Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie O’Donnell, Larry The Cable Guy, and Tim Allen.

"The comedians were very funny, and very professional," wrote Mark Bruhmuller, Fire Chief of the Churchtown Fire Company of New York. “Joey Novick did an excellent job. Everybody loves to laugh, and it's a great deal of fun."

ComedyWorks produces more than 300 shows a year, almost 150 of those for emergency service organizations. The money these shows can

raise varies, depending on things like the number of tickets sold, how they're priced, the amount spent on promotion and whether food and drink are available.

"Mostly companies produce shows in their own facilities, which may hold 300–400 people," says Novick.

"We'll put together a show for them that will bring in comedians from major comedy clubs, with a headliner from HBO, Comedy Central, or the Tonight Show. The feature performer will be someone who's headlined the comedy circuit: Catch a Rising Star, the Improv, the Comedy Store. The host of the show will be a comedian who's very high-energy, like a gameshow host, to get the audience warmed up. A triple headliner show!”

The Somerset Fire Company of New Jersey produces two fundraisers a year through ComedyWorks.

"We've done about ten shows so far, and it's been great," says Mike Rein-

beck, who coordinates the shows for the 65-member volunteer department.

"A friend of mine who had used Joey told me, 'This guy books really good acts.' So, we did the first show, everything was great, and we've been doing shows with Joey ever since."

"I find their people to be very funny," agrees Adam Hubney, chief of the Atlantic Highlands Volunteer Fire Department in New Jersey, which books comedians through ComedyWorks for its annual dinner.

"We have a professional comedy club in our county, and the quality is just as good."

Comedy Works provides a 30-page ‘How-To’ guide that assists organizations through the comedy show production and warns of mistakes to avoid. "We make sure they follow everything in the guide," says Novick. "If a company has never done this before, it gives you everything from you need to know. We make sure that things get done right.

Clients who follow the guide always do very well and tend to make money.”

One person was injured when the vehicle they were driving overturned in the Town of Newburgh on December 11, 2012.

Winona Lake Engine Company with the Town of Newburgh Emergency Services and Mobile Life Support Services were dispatched to 18 Powder Mill Road at Algonquin Park for the report of an overturn at approximately 11:25 a.m. One person was removed from the vehicle, packaged and transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Andrew was a Livingston County 911 dispatcher, New York State Fire Instructor and served as Deputy Fire Chief with the Livonia Fire Department. Drew passed away in August of 2007, after a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis.

Three car accident Town of Newburgh, NY - On December 11, 2012 at approximately 5:00 p.m., Winona Lake Engine Company and Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services were toned out for a three car accident on Route 52 at the entrance to Algonquin Park. Two blazes for Buffalo Buffalo firefighters of the 3rd Battalion 2nd Platoon were kept busy early Tuesday morning, December 11th. The first fire was in a large two and a half frame store front at 174 French St. on Buffalo's east side. Damage was extensive and many security gates and wired windows had to be cut. The second blaze was at 23 Gibson St., not far from the famous Broadway Market. Heavy fire in the rear caused 3rd Battalion Chief Michael Tuberdyke to call for a defensive attack. An aggressive stop by Engine Co. 3 changed tactics to an interior fight.

Three-one and three quarter inch hand lines were used. The cause of the fire in the vacant is under investigation. No injuries were reported and damage was set at $25,000.00.

Three firefighters hurt in early morning blaze Buffalo firefighters responded just before 10 a.m. on December 1, 2012 to 112 Humason Avenue on the city's east side.

Arriving crews reported an occupied one and a half story wood frame with heavy smoke pushing from the second floor and attic windows with fire showing in the rear of the structure.

Firefighters advanced hoselines and began ventilating the roof as

heavy fire involved the rear of the building, threatening the exposure building on the D side.

While still en route, Acting 3rd Battalion Chief Angrisano requested an extra engine and ladder to respond.

Firefighters were forced to

switch to a defensive attack for a short time due to the heavy volume of fire and low water pressure.

All occupants had made it safely out of the building before firefighters arrived.

Three firefighters were injured fighting the blaze. Damage was set at $85,000. The cause is under investigation.

Grain mill emergencies training Churchville is home to the oldest business in Monroe County. In 1810, Samuel Church built a grain mill on the banks of Black Creek.

Just after the turn of the century, he moved it to it's current location to take advantage of the rail line. It has continually made flour from wheat since that time. On another history note, there were 10,000 mills in the US in 1900. Today, there are only six in New York.

Making flour does pose some risks to the employees of a mill.

On Monday, December 3, 2012, members of the firefighting and rescue community received two hours of in-depth training to prepare for emergencies in relation to the flour mill. Instructions included presentations from the

Northeast Center for Agriculture and Occupational Health, Penn State University and Star of the West engineers and safety.

Topics focused on prevention, lessons learned, grain entrapments, dust explosions rescue techniques, hazardous materials found in farm settings and machine safety to name a few.

Fire departments from Chili, Scottsville, Clifton and the Monroe County Fire Bureau participated.

Minivan rolls over Buffalo firefighters of Engine Co. 1, Ladder C 2 and Rescue Co. 1 of the 2nd Platoon along with the 4th battalion chief were called out late Tuesday evening, December 11th, for a mini van that rolled over at the corner of Main and Swan Streets. in downtown Buffalo. The driver of the van had to be extricated. Rescue Co. 1 cut and folded the roof, so the patient could be removed. The victim was transported by Rural Metro Ambulance with unknown injuries. A signal pole was also knocked down. The accident shut down the Metro Rail temporarily until the vehicle could be removed.

Blaze at vacant in Buffalo Buffalo firefighters of the 4th Battalion 1st Platoon were called out to battle a blaze in a one and a half frame dwelling at 22 Pooley Pl. on the city's west side on November 15. Firefighters used multiple one and three quarter and two and a half inch hand lines. The house was vacant, but the houses on each side were occupied and those residents forced to flee their homes. A news anchor from Channel 7 fell at the fire scene and was transported to the hospital. No firefighters were reported injured. Damage was listed at $20,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Two critical from motorcycle accident At 2:46 p.m., the tones went off for South Lockport Volunteer Fire Company for a motorcycle struck by a truck. Firefighters were en route within minutes of the call. South Lockport Fire Chief And Critical Care Technician Derek Caldwell proceeded to the scene.

The chief and Niagara County Sheriff Deputy Paul Harrer found two critically injured people, who had been thrown from the motorcycle and were lying on the ground.

Caldwell started care on the female, who had a severe head injury. Deputy Harrer realized that the male driver was in grave con-

dition, he was bleeding from a severe leg injury. He wasted no time applying tourniquets.

South Lockport Ambulance arrived on the scene. Chief Caldwell had fire control call for both Mercy Flight helicopters.

The City of Lockport paramedics, Rapids Volunteer ILS and Rural Metro paramedics were called to the scene to assist in with treatment.

In the driveway next to the downed motorcycle and it's riders, was a full size SUV with heavy

front end damage.

Both victims were treated, secured and transported across the road to the waiting Mercy Flight helicopters side by side in the parking lot.

Once loaded the helicopters and Mercy Flight staff raced to the Trauma Center ECMC in Buffalo.

The last report had the victims in extreme critical condition. The New York State Police arrived on the scene were responsible for the investigation.

Van fire for Newburgh The City of Newburgh Fire Department Truck 1 and Engine 1 responded to a van fire at 10:04 a.m. on November 28, 2012.

No one was hurt and the fire was caused by driving with the parking break on.

Snyder busy with two fires The Snyder Fire Department in the Town of Amherst had a busy week recently handling two ďŹ res within a few days of each other.

On Sunday, November 11th in a garage at 28 Morningside Lane, the homeowner reported an electrical arc near the dryer in the garage, causing clothing and other materials to catch on ďŹ re. FireďŹ ghters contained the ďŹ re damage to the garage area, but there was smoke damage throughout the house.

Snyder was assisted by a FAST crew from the Eggertsville Hose Company. Two ďŹ reďŹ ghters suffered

minor injuries.

Snyder Chief Paul Griebner estimated damage at $45,000.

Four days later, ďŹ re severely damaged a ranch dwelling at 9 Evanshire Lane.

Shortly before midnight, the occupants discovered ďŹ re burning in the wall to the rear of their ďŹ replace and called 911.

Snyder ďŹ reďŹ ghters discovered one room on ďŹ re upon arrival and

worked quickly to bring the ďŹ re under control.

Fire damage was limited to the area of ďŹ re origin; however, smoke and heat damaged a majority of the house.

Snyder was assisted by a FAST crew from the Eggertsville Hose Company.

One ďŹ reďŹ ghter suffered a minor injury and Snyder Fire Chief Paul Griebner estimated damage at $150,000

Dunkirk, NY. In the early hours of November 27, numerous calls were received reporting a house fire at 184 King Street in the 4th Ward.

Minutes after dispatch, Engine 4 arrived, reporting a working fire. There were contrasting reports of victims inside the residence, so an aggressive search was completed.

Heavy fire conditions were throughout the two and a half story single family house. After the search, a defensive operation

went into place, utilizing master stream devices from Engine 4 and Ladder 1.

The cause of the fire was determined to be unintentional and there were no injuries.

The #4 shift was on duty, and the incident commander was Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom.

Terry's Corners 1st Assistant Chief Bill Fischer called for manpower after seeing a small compact car down a raveen and resting in the creek.

Tri Town Ambulance responded to the scene along with Gasport Volunteer Fire Company.

The male driver slid across the seat and was resting on the passenger side of the car. The creek made it so the rescue took part from the drivers side.

The steep angle made it difficult to move in and out of the car.

Crews used skills to carefully maneuver manpower in and out of the scene and to make sure the best care was being utilized in the safest manner.

Chief Fischer called for Mercy Flight to fly the victim to a trauma center due to the mechanics of the accident.

The helicopter canceled due to poor weather.

Once the male driver was secured to the backboard, crews brought the driver back up the hill to the waiting ambulance.

The injuries due not appear to be life threatening and the New York State Police are investigating the crash.

Several residents and a firefighter injured Buffalo firefighters of the 7th Battalion 3rd Platoon were called out to a three story apartment building at 1011-15 Amherst St. in North Buffalo on November 16. An off duty Buffalo firefighter assisted in the rescue of multiple occupants. 50 residents were displaced by the blaze. Division Chief Patrick Britzalaro called for a Metro bus to keep the residents warm, who were forced out into the cold morning air. Damage was listed at $225,000.00. The cause the fire is under investigation. Several residents and a firefighter were transported to the hospital with injuries.

Car split in two resulting in death Town of Newburgh, NY. A teenager was killed on the evening of November 19th on a stretch of road notorious for bad accidents.

According to reports, the driver of an Audi, 49 year old John Dyer, was attempting to pass cars. He lost struck another vehicle when re-entering his lane, resulting in the two car collision.

Cronomer Valley Fire Department crews were astonished at the

sight before them. The front of the Audi was in the road, with the rear found a couple hundred feet away in the adjacent woods.

Officials state that a 15 year old female passenger in the rear of the Audi suffered life-ending injuries upon impact. Another rear passen-

ger was flown to Westchester Medical Center for serious injuries. The driver and front passenger were packaged and transported to St. Francis Hospital. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to St. Luke's Hospital with what seem to be less serious injuries.

The investigation into the cause of the accident continues.

Head on crash in Middlehope Town of Newburgh, NY. On November 23, 2012 at a little after 7 a.m., crews were called to the scene of a head on crash on Route 9W. Middlehope Fire Department and the Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services arrived to find two damaged vehicles in the roadway. One patient was packaged and transported to a local hospital for injuries.

Milan home destroyed by fire The Milan and Livingston Fire Departments responded to a house fire at 559 Spring Lake Road at approximately 2 p.m. on November 20, 2012.

Upon arrival of the fire department, the fire was burning throughout the first floor and into the second floor. A second alarm was requested with the Red Hook Fire Department responding.

An aggressive attack by firefighters enabled a quick knockdown of the fire and interior

operations were conducted along with a search of the residence, which indicated no one was at home at the time.

One firefighter sustained a knee injury and was transported by Northern Dutchess Paramedics to Northern Dutchess Hospital.

Chief Alfred Sardaro was in command of the fire. Assisting at

the scene were NDP, NY State Police and the Dutchess County Sheriffs office.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Dutchess County Fire Investigation team.

The Rhinebeck and Tivoli Fire Departments relocated apparatus and staffed the Milan fire stations during the fire.

Identification of the homeowner had not yet been made.

Big Dogs present fire safety Buffalo firefighters from Engine Co. 33 4th Platoon "The Big Dogs" were sent to the CAO Head Start Center for a fire safety lecture on November 19. Just as the rig pulled up, the center had their fire drill. The preschool children could not believe they had a real fire engine at their drill. The children were given a demonstration. They got to see hoses and were entertained by the firefighters in their full turnout gear. The class moved inside and were given a fire safety talk by Lt. Chris Ray.

Driver charged after fatal accident On November 17 at approximately 3 a.m., the City of Newburgh Police, Mobile Life Support Services and City of Newburgh Fire Department responded to the report of an overturned vehicle. A female passenger was killed in the accident. She was transported to St. Luke's Hospital and succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with felony DWI. The investigation continues.

Fire spreads in Buffalo Buffalo firefighters of the 6th Battalion 3rd Platoon were called out to battle a blaze at 149 Crystal Ave. in South Buffalo on November 16. Binghamton deploys to Long Island In the weeks after Hurricane Sandy devastated the Eastern seaboard, many departments sent crews to areas hit hardest. Binghamton was no exception, sending a total of three crews over a seven day period.

During their deployments, crews were stationed at two different departments provid- JUMP TO FILE # ing aid in any way 111112100 they could.

The first crew left Binghamton for Nassau County on November 1st with a DECON trailer and hazmat equipment. Four members provided level C and D decon to personnel working in contaminated areas. The crew was deployed to assist Island Park.

After 48 hours in Island Park, a second crew of four members relieved the first. This crew cleaned flooded portions of the firehouse, and unloaded and redistributed truckloads of cloths, food and supplies.

On November 5th, a third crew also deployed to Nassau County, this time with an engine to assist the Baldwin Fire Department. They responded to numerous emergencies and assisted with anything needed.

The Binghamton Fire Department and specifically the members who deployed to Long Island would like to extend a sincere thank you to both Island Park and Baldwin Fire Departments for their generous hospitality during our stays. Having been through two major flooding disasters in Binghamton in the last seen years, we understand the long road. We wish these fire departments and their members the best of luck as they continue to rebuild. Stay safe brothers.

Fire takes control of wooded area On November 25, 2012 at approximately 2:30 p.m., Washingtonville firefighters were called to 3 Depot Street, behind the Mays Field baseball fields, for a large brush fire. All available manpower was used to quickly fight a brush fire that encompassed just under an acre between a small hill and the Moodna Creek. Crews arrived with an engine, a brush truck and a utility vehicle. They used two hose lines and multiple tools to extinguish the area. Captain Brian Bates had command and the fire under control very quickly. According to sources, this is the third brush fire in the area this month. All are under investigation.

Friendship steamer attends competition The Friendship Fire Department's 1881 Silsby steam pumper was the first piece of fire protection equipment in our department, when it was formed. It is one of only two known operational Silsby pumpers in the country. It is the only operational horse drawn steamer in New York. The steamer attended the Walnut Hill Driving Competition in Pittsford, NY. The FFD Steamer Company recieved mutual aid assistance for the pumping demonstration with the Pittsford explorer post manning the hose lines. Mendon supplied the water from a port a pond system. The FFD steamer was Grand Champion in the Trade and Commerical Division.

Buffalo firefighters of the 7th Battalion 1st Platoon were called out to 73 Baxter St. in Buffalo's Riverside section on November 16. Around 6:20 a.m., crews were called out for a car on fire between two houses. First arriving Engine Co. 26 encountered downed power lines and two houses involved. Ladder Co. 7 ventilated the attic windows and had a close call as fire shot out the windows, putting them in danger. All three firefighters made it down safely. The fire caused damage to 65 and 67 Baxter St. as well as the vehicle of origin. Damage was listed at $85,000 and the cause of the fire is under investigation. All residents escaped the flames.

A bunch of New York State fire apparatus made the trip to Wallington, N.J. for the 11th annual “Holiday Parade of Lights” parade.

The parade is JUMP TO FILE # held each year on 112712103 the Saturday after Thanksgiving and features hundreds of apparatus, ambulances, police units, and other vehicles all brightly decorated in holiday lights. Many have music, bubbles, smoke or a theme.

This year’s event was almost canceled due to Hurricane Sandy, but after some serious discussion, the decision was made to keep the tradition going.

All of the participants and the thousands that lined the route to watch were glad they did.

Rapids calls in mutual aid for a wind whipped fire Rapids volunteers reported to the scene of a structure fire at Lot 161 in the Minnick Road trailer Park.

1st Assistant Chief Joe Fries founnd heavy smoke whipping from the roof line of the structure. Niagara County Sheriff's Deputy Paul Harrer made his way JUMP TO FILE # through the smoke 112912115 to make sure everyone was out.

Deputy Harrer found a neighbor standing in the thick smoke, trying to use a garden hose to put water on the fire through a broken side window. The neighbor was removed.

1st Assistant Chief Joe Fries sent the alert for mutual aid from South Lockport, Terry's Corners, and a FAST team from Clarence Center in Erie County.

Rehab was set up for firefighters and the line of communications was covered for all units responding and on scene.

As Rapid’s first equipment rolled onto the scene and crews raced to grab lines, the wind picked up again, changing direction and

blowing right on the truck.

Firefighters went to the side door to make entry only to have the thick smoke turn from gray to black, making it almost impossible to see. As the door was open to hit the flames, the smoke flashed to fire and it ripped out the door and across the ceiling.

Officers worked together to keep the scene safe and running smoothly.

Under the watchful eye of firefighters, family members were allowed to get items out of a rear shed that was not burning. The FAST from Clarence Center stood by at the scene.

The fire flared up over and over again and finally the side outside wall was torn down along with the main front window to conquer the hidden flames.

After approximately three hours of well organized attacks, the fire was out.

Rural Metro was at the scene and assisted in the rehab of firefighters. Niagara County area 4 O&C was called in to investigate the fire and Niagara County Sheriff's office handled the report.

Hess truck makes appearance in Washingtonville parade On December 1, 2012, an amazing array of lights drove through the little village of Washingtonville in Orange County.

Fire departments from throughout the county and further decorated their trucks with holiday lights.

They traveled from Verne Allen Park to the town square for the lighting of the Christmas tree. Santa

rode atop Washingtonville's ladder and help light the tree.

Making an appearance in the parade was an amazing Hess truck, looking absolutely authentic. Residents have Salisbury Mills Fire Department to thank for the creation.

Included in the parade were Washingtonville, Coldenham, Winona Lake, South Blooming Grove, Salisbury Mills, Mountain Lodge, Maybrook, Greenwood Lake and many more.

A good time was had by all as many local businesses gave out free cocoa, candy canes and cookies.

We regret to advise you that a fire captain with the City of Otsego, in Allegan County, Michigan, who was a paramedic with American Medical Response (AMR) has died while operating in New York on Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Captain Steve Stevenson passed away Sunday, December 2, 2012 at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), Manhasset, Nassau County, NY. While in New York, he suffered a medical emergency and was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm. Captain Stevenson was at NSUH. Stevenson was going to be sedated for two or three days. His heart and kidneys were functioning well and the surgeon expected to keep him in the hospital for at least two weeks. That was to be followed by three to four weeks of rehab, but he was unable to survive.

great officer, friend, father and mentor this evening. Captain Steve Stevenson passed away in New York while working relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy. He was due to come home today.

“After 13 hours in surgery, he succumbed to the toll that was placed on him.

“He leaves behind a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, father and siblings as well.

“Those that knew Captain Stevenson can attest that he was a brilliant officer, a great instructor, a genius of a paramedic and the best friend anyone could ask for.

He will be greatly missed."

Stevenson, a paramedic, was working for his employer, American Medical Response, in New York when he was stricken with a spontaneous medical issue.

He leaves behind his daughter, wife, mother, father and siblings as well. Our sincere condolences to all affected.
