Almost a year since Hurricane Sandy came through New Jersey and destroyed a good part of the Seaside area, the rebuild process began on a lot of businesses. Some stores just reopened in time for this past summer's season. That all changed on September 12th, after a massive fire destroyed five blocks of boardwalk and over 30 stores.

1st Responder correspondent loses pets and home to fire Wallington, NJ. Numerous local and 1st Responder photographers arrived at a house fire and immediately put their cameras away.

It is a very rare occasion to see so many cameras not used while a large blaze is fought valiantly by local firefighters. But, this home belonged to one of their own.

On the evening of Friday, September 13th at approximately 8:15 p.m., the Wallington Fire Department was alerted to a reported house fire at 75 Midland Avenue.

Firefighters from Wallington Engine 203 arrived and confirmed the working fire. They immediately requested a second alarm due to lack of manpower, as many firefighters in the area were at the Wildwood Convention.

Upon arriving at that address, crews unfortunately confirmed that the home belonged to 1st Responder Correspondent and Brother Wallington Firefighter James Wood, Sr. Knowing the Wood family well, firefighters knew that pets were inside the residence. No residents were home at the time and crews made an immediate aggressive attack on the fire.

bor and within minutes, James Wood arrived at the fire. "I could not believe this was happening to my house," said Wood. "As a fire photographer, we go to house fires all the time, but not thinking that it could be your own one day."

Wood continued, "I was so saddened by losing my puppy that I just went to the car and came back with my camera. I started taking pictures to not think of my pets that we lost."

One Passaic firefighter was injured when he fell through the stairs while making his way up to the second floor.

The fire was brought under control in about one hour and the cause was determined to be electrical due to old wiring located in a bedroom. The Wood family lost two cats and two dogs in the blaze.

The home is uninhabitable and family members are assisting with a place to stay.

Mutual aid arrived to the scene from East Rutherford, Rutherford, Carlstadt, Woodridge, Hasbrouck

Heights, Garfield, Lodi, and Passaic.

Word spread quickly through the firefighting and photography communities. The 1st Responder booth at the Wildwood Convention the next day was also abuzz. Heartfelt thoughts are coming in to Wood from throughout the state for good reason. He has helped so many others and now it was time to return the favor.

Firefighter Wood stated that Wallington did a great job trying to locate his dog and expressed his gratitude for all of their efforts. "My town comes together strong when one goes through tough times. Our town is in the shape of a heart and when someone hurts in the town, the whole town hurts," stated Wood. "I am so grateful for all of the aid that we received. Thank you to all."

Hasbrouck Heights house fire sends one to burn center Hasbrouck Heights firefighters made quick work of a house fire 248 Ottawa Avenue on September 15th. Arriving first was captain Rob Knobloch (acting chief due to the Wildwood weekend. He confirmed smoke showing from the dwelling. A kitchen fire was discovered while Captain Knobloch used a fire extinguisher to keep the fire in check before the arrival of companies. As units arrived, one line was stretched to the kitchen to knock down the fire. Out of town assistance from Lodi and Wood-Ridge assisted on the scene. The occupant of the home sustained burns to her upper body and was taken to Hackensack Hospital for treatment. She was then transferred to St. Barnabas Hospital for care in their the burn center.

In memory of those who gave all 1st Responder Newspaper honors and remembers emergency responders lost in the line of duty Oregon: John Hammack, 58 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: August 1, 2013 Death Date: August 1, 2013 Fire Department: U.S. Forest Service - Deschutes National Forest Initial Summary: Firefighter Hammack was killed by the top portion of a snag that fell and struck him and another firefighter who was injured in the incident. The firefighters were clearing away hazardous trees on a wildfire, Incident #398, in the Mt. Washington Wilderness Area of Oregon. Hammack was taken to the Redmond Memorial Chapel the following afternoon after a recovery effort by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office who is also conducting an investigation into the death.

Oregon: Jesse Trader, 19 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: August 6, 2013 Death Date: August 6, 2013 Fire Department: Southwest Oregon District - Oregon Department of Forestry Initial Summary: Firefighter Trader was returning from the evening shift when the water tender (tanker) he was driving hit an embankment and rolled over on the Bear Camp Road near Soldier Camp. Firefighters in vehicles driving behind Trader immediately stopped to assist. An advanced life support ambulance arrived on scene within minutes and life flight was quickly launched; however, all efforts to save Firefighter Trader were unsuccessful. The water tender, owned Ace Earthmoving, was being utilized by County Fire, a private fire suppression company serving the Merlin area and contracted to assist with the Big Windy Complex fire at the time. An accident investigation team from Josephine County and cooperating law enforcement agencies arrived on scene shortly after the accident and their investigation continues.

Oregon: Kevin Hall, 59 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: August 10, 2013 Death Date: August 10, 2013 Fire Department: BLM - Vale District Initial Summary: Firefighter Hall was found unresponsive while supporting a bulldozer crew as it worked to repair an existing fire line on the Grassy Mountain fire. BLM and other firefighters administered CPR until an air ambulance arrived but Hall reportedly died at the scene.

Texas: Juan Pablo Casanova, 53 Rank: Pump Operator/Engineer Incident Date: July 16, 2013 Death Date: August 10, 2013 Fire Department: Brownsville Fire Department Initial Summary: Pump Operator/Engineer Casanova suffered a heart attack while on duty. Casanova experienced three more heart attacks while in the hospital where he passed away on August 10th.

California: Matthew G. McKnight, 51 Rank: Fire Captain/Paramedic Incident Date: August 12, 2013 Death Date: August 12, 2013 Fire Department: Los Angeles Fire Department Initial Summary: Fire Captain/Paramedic McKnight was found unresponsive while on duty at the LAFD Metropolitan Fire Communications Center. Although immediately treated by colleagues who performed CPR, applied a defibrillator and instituted advanced life support measures, Captain McKnight was pronounced deceased at a nearby medical center a short time later. The nature of the fatal injury is yet to be determined.

California: Oscar Montano-Garcia, 51 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: August 25, 2013 Death Date: August 25, 2013 Fire Department: Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Initial Summary: During operations on the Nabob fire in Northern California, Firefighter Montano-Garcia succumbed to a medical condition the nature of which is still to be reported.

Flames destroy Vineland home Vineland, NJ. An early morning fire destroyed a home while the occupant was at work leaving her homeless.

At 4:36 a.m., on September 23rd, the Cumberland 911 Center dispatched Vineland Fire Stations 1, 2, 4 and 6 for a dwelling fire in the 2000 block of Megan Court.

Based on the calls being received, the all hands assignment was dispatched immediately. Responding were Engines 11, 22, 42, and 61 and Ladders 4 and 6 along with an ambulance from Vineland EMS. Robert Cresci, Assistant Chief of Station 2, was first on the scene

and reported a single-story dwelling with heavy fire through the roof.

Engine 61, under the command of Lt. Dave Bell, arrived on scene and lead off with a two and a half blitz line and Ladder Truck 6 went in service with its ladder pipe. A deck gun was also operated for a short time.

The heavy streams quickly knocked down the flames and were shut down so that crews could mop up with smaller hand lines.

Chief Robert Pagnini put the fire under control at 5:17 with crews remaining on the scene until 9:18.

Thirty-seven fire and EMS personnel responded to the blaze. The dwelling appears to be a total loss.

Fire and police investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire that appears to have originated in the kitchen located at the rear of the dwelling.

No injuries were reported.

Assistance was provided to the occupant by the Southern Shore Chapter of the Red Cross.

Maywood knocks down flames quickly An aggressive attack by Maywood firefighters was able to minimize damage to a home on September 18th, although a family pet was reportedly lost.

The Maywood Fire Department was dispatched at about 10:30 to 621 Briarcliff Rd. for a report of a basement fire. First in units found visible fire on the first floor of a two and a half story frame dwelling with heavy smoke throughout.

Several lines were immediately stretched and the truck company opened up. Rochelle Park was called to the scene for an engine, and Hackensack for a F.A.S.T.

The rapid advancing of the lines had the flames extinguished before they could take possession of the structure.

A search confirmed that all occupants were out. Opening up, overhaul, and checking for any extension then commenced.

The fire was placed under control in about a half hour.

Sandy strikes the Jersey Shore almost a year later UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers

Sandy hit New Jersey hard in October 2012, and the super storm just hasn't let go, as fire officials deemed a fire that consumed approximately five blocks of boardwalk business in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights, almost one year later, was possibly a result of the storm.

The nine hour fire destroyed more than 50 boardwalk businesses.

Some 400 firefighters from as far south as Cape May County, as far west as Burlington County and the Neptune System from the north converged on the Seaside location.

The fire that was reported around 2:30 p.m., September 12th, swept through blocks from Stockton Avenue in Seaside Park to Lincoln Avenue in Seaside Heights. Fueled by 3 mile per hour winds pushing flames and embers north, the blaze wasn't under control until 11 p.m.

The Fun Town Pier amusement park, which was expected to open next year, collapsed in flames.

Decades-old electrical lines snaked under the weathered wooden planks in Seaside Park. Sandy battered the shore and those lines were compromised by corrosive seawater and sand.

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said one or both elementsage and raging ocean-caused an electrical malfunction that sparked the fire along the boardwalk.

“Whether age alone or a combination of age and saltwater corrosion caused the malfunction, we will never know,” the prosecutor said.

Jessica Gothold, a senior special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said investigators determined two pieces of wire came in contact with each other, creating an electrical arc that blew the cables apart. Exactly how the wires touched is unknown, the investigators said.

The high winds that blew beneath the boardwalk and spread embers to tar rooftops proved to be the biggest challenge, said Brian Gabriel, fire coordinator for Ocean County.

It became clear to firefighters that the best way to stop the rapidly moving flames was to get ahead of it and stop its forward progress.

This plan forced Seaside Heights Fire Chief Bill Rumbolo to make a gut-wrenching decision. Crews had to gorge out sections of the newly constructed boardwalk.

“It was the hardest decision I made, but deep down, I knew we had to do it,” said Rumbolo, who oversaw much of the rebuilding after Sandy in his full-time job as Seaside Heights Public Works superintendent.

opened and filled with sand at Lincoln Avenue helped the crews stop the fire.

The only reported injuries from fighting the fire were heat-related and breathing problems, officials said. Local business and non-profit organizations donated food and drinks for the emergency responders.

Despite another setback, the people at the New Jersey Shore are tough and determined, and they will re-build again.

DOWNS: A fire tore through a set of apartments at the Hensyn Village in the Budd Lake section of Mount Olive Township on August 25th.

Firefighters from numerous surrounding departments worked for about an hour and a half to knock down the flames, officials said.

UPS: Trenton held a swearing-in ceremony at City Hall, August 28th, for 17 new firefighters.

DOWNS: A four alarm fire spread quickly through the Garside Avenue houses in Newark, August 26th, causing severe damage to two buildings and drawing in more than 100 firefighters to the scene.

UPS: Damont Brown has been hired as a career firefighter in Bergenfield.

DOWNS: Six people were sent to area hospitals, August 27th, after a one-alarm fire at the Hudson County jail in Kearny. The fire started in an office trailer on Hackensack Avenue. Chief Steven Dyl said the trailer was used for storage.

Five Hudson County corrections officers were taken to Jersey City Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation, and a Kearny firefighter was transported to St. Michael's Hospital in Newark for

heat exhaustion, Dyl said. The cause of the fire is being investigated by Hudson County corrections, the chief said.

UPS: On August 25th, the Borough of Riverdale and the Riverdale Volunteer Fire Department honored Captain Joseph “Papa Joe” Ezzo, who was the only department member to die in the line of duty, as they gave Post Lane the honorary name of “Captain Papa Joe Ezzo Way” in his memory.

DOWNS: A powerful explosion leveled a Hampton home on August 28th trapping and killing a 56-yearold woman. Two neighbors attempted to rescue the woman after hearing her yelling from the basement, but moments after the explosion, the house was fully involved.

UPS: The Highland Lakes Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary celebrated their 50th anniversary at the township council meeting in August. Council President Patrick Rizzuto read a proclamation congratulating the volunteers on their anniversary.

DOWNS: While responding to a confirmed shooting victim on August 26th, a Union City Police ambulance was involved in an MVA on Fifth Street.

UPS: Collingswood plans to hire two full-time firefighters thanks to a two-year $239,184 federal SAFER grant. The new members will be Paul Bonamassa and Kyle Jarozynski.

DOWNS: More than 7,000 solar panels on the roof of a burning Delanco warehouse, September 1st, proved too much of a hazard for firefighters, officials said. “We may very well not be able to save buildings that have alternative energy,”

said William Kramer, New Jersey's acting Fire Marshal. Delanco Fire Chief Ron Holt refused to send his firefighters onto the roof of the 300,000-square-foot Dietz & Watson facility, during the eleven alarm fire. Solar panels are hazardous to firefighters for a number of reasons, according to Ken Willette, a division manager with the National Fire Protection Association. “There is the possibility of electric shock because the electricity to the panels can't be shut off,” he said, “and not having a clear path to the roof to cut a ventilation hole is another challenge.”

UPS: Days short of his 18th birthday, with plans to become a firefighter, Morgan Herndon of Mahwah rushed into a burning trailer home and carried out an 87year-old woman, September 1st, across the street from his home. He saw the porch in flames, called 911, and walked around the house where he saw an elderly man standing in the doorway. He helped him out and went back in and carried the woman out, who was looking for her three cats.

DOWNS: A fire on September 8th struck the Golden Dawn Diner in Maple Shade, shutting down a local landmark after decades in business.

Fire Chief Eldwood Severns said the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen. The kitchen and back storage area were severely damaged.

UPS: On September 18th, Westville Fire Chief Eric Farley received an award at the National Liberty Museum, in Philadelphia, for his leadership in coordinating the Gloucester County Fire Chiefs and Fire Officers Association Bereavement Committee.

DOWNS: A fire that authorities

UPS: The Investors Foundation, which awards charitable funding to nonprofit organizations in the communities served by Investors Bank, announced a grant of $4,880 to the Millburn Fire Department. The department has an innovative wellness program, and the money will be used to replace two outdated cross circuit elliptical machines with new state-of-the-art models. “We have a personal trainer who visits five times a year and runs each crew through a regimen of competitive exercise programs,” said Fire Chief J. DOWNS: A dog died and a firefighter was injured, September 22nd, in a three alarm fire at a Kenilworth home on North 21st St. UPS: On September 23rd, 17 recruits graduated from the fire academy giving Paterson a total of 324 firefighters on the job. Of the 17, nine will be paid for through the next two years through SAFER funding.

DOWNS: Two 11-year-old Manalapan boys suffered second-degree burns after burning sneakers and were taken by helicopter to St. Barnabas Burn Center on September 25th, officials said. The initial investigation revealed that the boys were burning sneakers by using aerosol cans, tiki torch and a lighter at the time they were burned.

Fire Company firefighters were honored in September for saving a man's life during a December, 2012, fire. Chief Brian Prochnow, Assistant Chief Robert Tice and Firefighter Shimon Miller were each awarded a class one Award of Valor from the Howell Joint Board of Fire Commissioners.

DOWNS: The Silver Lake firehouse in Belleville was closed in May as an unsafe structure, pending repairs. Engine Co. 3 is riding out of Truck 1's quarters.

UPS: The Millburn Fire Department recently announced that it is offering free, comprehensive fire safety surveys to residents. Fire Chief J. Michael Roberts' idea to begin offering the surveys came after the Stanford, CT., fire on Christmas Day, 2010, which claimed the lives of three young girls and their grandparents.

DOWNS: Approximately 30 residents were displaced and three people injured, September 9th, when a three alarm fire involved an Ackerman Avenue apartment building in Clifton. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion and another suffered an arm injury, officials said. A resident was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. “The firefighters did an outstanding job from the moment they arrived,” said Fire Chief Vincent Colavitti. “They went into service and they saved this building.”

Roseland celebrates 100 years of service Roseland, NJ. One hundred years ago, on July 23, 1913, 44 men attended a meeting at “Band Hall”.

The intent of the meeting was to form a citizen group that would protect the town from fires.

They adopted the name "Roseland Volunteer Fire Company" and elected William Chubbuck the first Chief, E.A. Williams Assistant Chief, Oscar DeCamp Treasurer, and Arthur Braunsworth Secretary.

All the members present adopted a pledge that read, "We the undersigned citizens of Roseland, pledge ourselves to form a volunteer fire company, without pay, for a period of one year, to protect life and property of the borough against loss by fire."

Today, the Roseland Fire Department consists of over 35 firefighters. The department also has a cadet program. Members are additionally trained as emergency medical technicians, haz-mat technicians and technical rescue technicians.

From 1998 until 2011 she was a full-time dispatcher for the New Jersey State Police. In 2009, she graduated from the Firefighter I class and in 2013 she completed the Firefighter II training. Andrea worked part-time as an EMT for the Bridgeton Fire Department from 2008 to 2011. She was hired fulltime by the Bridgeton Fire Department on July 5, 2011 and became its first female career firefighter. Andrea is a member of the Cumberland County Technical Rescue Team and the Downe Twp. Dive Team and is the MDA coordinator for the local union.

Far Hills-Bedminster triple extrication On Friday, September 6, 2013 at 11:48, the Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department, Somerset Medical Center BLS Unit 803 and ALS Unit 683 were dispatched to Interstate 287 southbound at milemarker 22.9 for an auto accident with a vehicle on its side with three patients trapped.

Upon arrival of Chief Eric Murphy, command was established and update provided of two vehicles involved, one on its side and three patients pinned. Engine 29-101 arrived, stabilized the vehicle on its

side, and began extrication. The roof was removed to gain access and remove 2 patients.

Rescue 29-151 stabilized the second vehicle and performed a door removal to extricate the third patient.

Peapack-Gladstone Rescue 51-151 was also requested for additional manpower and assisted with extrication and patient removal.

Three victims were transported to the hospital.

The Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department responded with Engines 29-101 and 29-102, Rescue 29-151, Fire Police Vehicle 29-163 and Tanker 29-132. Peapack-Gladstone Fire Department responded with Rescue 51-151. Somerset Medical Center responded with BLS units 803, 802, 851 and ALS Unit 683.

Sayreville responds to crash On September 15, 2013 Sayreville Engine Co. #1 and Melrose Fire Companies responded to a one car crash on Washington Road. Upon arrival, the fire department and Sayreville Emergency Squad removed several family members from the minivan, which had extensive front end damage. The passenger door had to be cut open by the Melrose crew to get the slightly injured passengers out. Sayreville Police detoured traffic around the scene due to the roadway being totally blocked by the crash vehicle and emergency personnel.

Millville, NJ. Millville firefighters had their work cut out for them early this morning at a vacant house fire.

At 4:11 a.m. on September 9th, firefighters and the Millville Rescue Squad 98 were dispatched to the 300 block of E. Vine St. for a dwelling fire, reported to be working.

Engine 34, under the command of Captain Mike Lippincott, was first on the scene. Capt. Lippincott reported that he had a two and a half story, wood-frame vacant dwelling with heavy fire showing from the C side. E-34 secured a water supply with a five inch line to a nearby hydrant.

The dwelling was a duplex with addresses of 310 and 312.

Capt. Lippincott and his crew stretched a one and three quarter inch line to the rear of the dwelling and began to knock down the flames. The fire had already extended up the wall to the second floor and into the attic area.

Chief Kurt Hess ordered an all hands at 4:35, which recalled offduty firefighters.

A blitz-fire appliance was placed in service as were several other lines. Crews performed exterior operations only, due to the house being vacant and heavily involved. A crew from L-34 opened the roof. Eventually, the job became

completely defensive and L-34 operated its ladder pipe.

Chief Hess placed the fire under control at 6:30 although crews remained on the scene for some time doing overhaul.

Twenty-five fire and EMS personnel responded with 2 engines, a ladder, a rescue and an ambulance.

A blitz-fire, two-one and three quarter inch lines and a one and a half inch line along with the ladder pipe were used to quell the blaze.

The fire originated on the first floor rear of the 312 side causing extensive damage throughout. The cause is under investigation by both Fire and Police.

Fire in Neptune damages two homes A working house fire was reported just before 2:00 p.m. on September 26. Neptune firefighters were dispatched to Corlies Avenue (also known as State Highway 33) and Ridge Avenue. Upon approach to the scene, a large column of black smoke was visible from the address, 1244 Corlies Avenue.

Upon arrival of the first fire unit, the fire was spreading to the neighboring home at 1246 Corlies Avenue. Firefighters worked for over an hour to get the fire in both homes under control. The fire is under investigation by the Monmouth County Fire Marshal's Office and local fire bureau.

Eight stops were made and engines, rear-mounts, tower ladders, tillers, a satellite, a Mack CF Foam Unit and Marine Company 1 were all photographed. Attendees were also able to observe the Annual Father Mychal Judge Walk of Remembrance. Thanks to all that attended, a sizable donation will be made to the UFAFDNY Widow’s and Children’s Fund as well as the Burn Center at Saint Barnabas.

Inferno strikes Seaside Heights and Seaside Park Almost a year since Hurricane Sandy came through New Jersey and destroyed a good part of the Seaside area, the rebuild process began on a lot of businesses. Some stores just reopened JUMP TO FILE in time for this past #091313113 summer's season.

That all changed on September 12th, after a massive fire destroyed five blocks of boardwalk and over 30 stores. The fire started around 2:30 p.m. And with heavy winds at over 30 mph, with gusts in the 40's, fire crews knew that they had a fight on their hands.

Within an hour, a massive mutual aid assignment was set up.

Fire departments throughout Ocean County were assigned to

this fire.

Fire departments from Monmouth, Hamilton, Atlantic, Burlington, and many more throughout the state also assisted.

There were over 400 firefights at one time assigned to different assignments.

The evacuation tones were ordered on several occasions for firefighters, who were on the boardwalk due to the number of collapses that were happening.

The fire was under control around 10:30 p.m., but pockets of fire remained and crews were expected to remain on scene for a few days to deal with hot spots.

The cause of the fire was deemed to be old electrical wires under the boardwalk that may have been damaged and possibly Superstorm Sandy.

Flames in five story apartment building light up North Bergen sky

North Bergen, NJ. A fast moving fire in the cockloft of a five story apartment building left approximately 60 families homeless and sent one firefighter to the hospital with broken ribs, on September 28th.

A full-assignment of North Hudson fire companies was dispatched to 9201 Kennedy Blvd. around 5:30 p.m. The large building stands out where Kennedy Blvd. and Bergen Blvd. meet at the county line. No alarms were sounding, but there was smoke above the fifth floor apartments. As the structure evacuated, firefighters attempted to locate the seat of the fire, but had difficulty. As the smoke grew, a second alarm was transmitted by 3rd Battalion Chief Mike Falco.

After Deputy Chief Anthony Avillo arrived, companies continued to radio to command that they could not locate the fire. A thirdalarm was struck, later followed by a fourth, for additional manpower.

Later, this was followed by numerous special calls for additional units. Mutual aid companies from Hoboken, Jersey City and Secaucus were put to work.

Crews working on the roof, attempting to make a trench cut, reported to command that sections of the roof were already very soft.

Fire was located at the “A” and “B” corner, but the fast moving flames were taking charge of the entire

cockloft. This forced the order for members to evacuate and set up a defensive operation. This included four ladder pipes and a tower ladder. Flames broke through the roof and vented out top-floor windows.

There was also an ember problem.

In addition, the roof contained several cell phone towers.

A huge column of black smoke rose above the scene which was visible for miles. Low banking smoke later covered part of the neighborhood stretching into Fairview and Bergen County. To add to the area resident's difficulty, the power company shut off power for several blocks until the scene was deemed secure. Members of the North Bergen O.E.M. set up portable light towers during the blackout.

As the fire in the structure began to move toward the northern end of the building at the Bergen County line, Cliffside Park Deputy Chief, and East Bergen Mutual Aid Coordinator, Ted Tarabokija called in Bergen units to the scene. This included units from his department, Fairview, Ridgefield, Edgewater, Fort Lee, Palisades Park, Englewood Cliffs and Leonia. A water supply was established using Fairview hydrants and supplied Cliffside Park's ladder pipe.

As the evening grew dark, flames lit up the Saturday night sky as master streams pounded the fire.

The multiple-alarm was declared under control around 9:20 p.m.

The township provided buses to transport tenants to North Bergen High Schoo,l where they were assisted by local O.E.M. and Red Cross officials.

North Bergen EMS set up a medical area on Kennedy Blvd., with medical units from the township, Weehawken and Meadowlands Hospital, but luckily most of their services were not needed.

They did assist some occupants and firefighters. Jersey City O.E.M. dispatched their RAC bus to the scene. In addition, the Gong Club served refreshments to firefighters on the Kennedy Blvd. side and the Box 54 Club's canteen serviced companies on the Bergen Blvd. side.

The initial belief was that the cause of the blaze was electrical in nature. The fire is being investigated by local and state officials.

On the only positive note, firefighters removed 25 pets from the building on Sunday. They located and removed mostly birds, plus three cats and three turtles. Residents, watching the building burn from the street on Saturday, expressed their concern for their pets, stating they are “family.”

North Branch saves residential structure

On September 7th at 9:51 p.m., North Branch Fire Company was dispatched to Regency Trailer Park located at 3260 Route 22 West in the North Branch section of Branchburg.

On location within three minutes of the call, North Branch Chief Dave Hickson was greeted by a well involved dumpster located only a few feet away from and occupied, permanent residential housing unit.

With the fire impending on the home, Branchburg police officers assisted the chief in evacuating the structure.

With the side of the structure and roof catching fire from the dumpster, a second alarm was called, bringing help from the

First arriving Engine 108 from North Branch was fully staffed and arrived within the five minute mark. The firefighters went to work quickly and deployed a one and three quarter inch hand line to the fire.

Second due Engine 102 also arrived quickly and supplied support water to Engine 108.

Green Knoll firefighters worked with North Branch on extinguishment and checked the housing unit for hot spots and ex-

tension. With the fire being contained to the exterior of the structure, residents were allowed to go back to their home after all firefighting and overhaul were complete.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Branchburg Fire Marshal and Police Department.

The first fire was in the Angeles National Forest, the Williams Fire in San Gabriel Canyon. The fire took two days and was started by a vehicle being parked on dry grass. The video shows a number of air tankers dropping retardant and helicopters siphoning water.

The next fire is a greater alarm at Palo Alto and Belmont in Los Angeles City and involved a two story commercial structure. The fire has possession of the second

floor and is through the roof. Handlines, deck guns and ladderpipes operate to quell this incident.

A structure fire in a wood frame private dwelling in Twain Hart, California is attacked by members of Cal Fire. Heavy fire is showing and interior crews advance while outside lines take care of exterior burning keeping the fire in check. Truck work by crews with a saw and hand tools vent at the peak of the roof.

A vegetation fire in Soulsbyville in Tuolumne County is fought by Cal Fire and the CDF (California Division of Forestry) using among other things, dozers and air tankers.

Another vegetation fire in Penns Gulch, Murphys, California is fought by air tankers, The view can see one take off from base. Super Scoopers which are CL-415 fixed wing air tankers are featured “up close and personal” in the final segment. These planes, which I believe a built by Canadair are contracted with the Los Angeles County FD and are at their Air Attack Base in Van Nuys, California. These planes demonstrate how they can swoop down in a reservoir, for instance and fill their water tanks without stopping and then respond or return to the fire.

This video will take us to a different aspect of firefighting, one which many of us are not familiar.

Working boat fire On September 15th 2013 in Sandy Hook Bay off of Leonardo State Marina, (Middletown NJ), working boat fire. Brevent Park & Leonardo Fire Co. of Middletown, Atlantic Highlands FD fire boats responded to this incident. The US Coast Guard Sandy Hook also responded. Community Fire Co. and Brevent Park Fire Co. also responded with land units. Leonardo First Aid Squad responded as well.

Bridgeton holds second annual 9/11 memorial stair climb Bridgeton, NJ. The weather was hot and humid, not at all a good day for strenuous activity, but the 62 participants managed to carry on, remembering those who perished that day and supporting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. JUMP TO FILE #091113115 According to Bridgeton Firefighter Anthony Brago, event organizer, participants came from as far as New York, Virginia and Colorado.

The climb took place in the ten story Bridgeton Senior Hi-Rise.

Participants needed to climb the stairs eleven times to simulate the 110 story twin-towers. After finishing the climb, they rang the bell eleven times.

Through the sale of T-shirts, registration fees and donations, money was raised for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The Bridgeton Fire Department put on the event and the Bridgeton Professional Firefighters I.A.F.F. Local 4822 funded the cost of the T-shirts.

The ladies from Canteen 6, Salem County, a self-sufficient unit, provided drinks and wet towels for the participants.

Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) Part II We continue from last month with the three major areas of change in the GHS which include hazard classification, labels, and safety data sheets.

Hazard classification: The definitions of hazard have been changed to provide specific criteria for classification of health and physical hazards, as well as classification of STAYING mixtures.

These speSAFE cific criteria will help to Chief Henry Campensure that bell evaluations of hazardous effects are consistent across manufacturers, and that labels and safety data sheets are more accurate as a result.

Labels: Chemical manufacturers and importers will be required to provide a label that includes a harmonized signal word, pictogram, and hazard statement for each hazard class and category.

Precautionary statements must also be provided.

Safety Data Sheets: Will now have a specified 16-section format.

Hazard classification: Under both the current Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) and the revised HCS, an evaluation of chemical hazards must be performed considering the available scientific evidence concerning such hazards.

Under the current HCS, the hazard determination provisions have definitions of hazard and the evaluator determines whether or not the data on a chemical meet those definitions. It is a performance-oriented approach that provides parameters for the evaluation, but not specific, detailed criteria. The hazard classification approach in the revised HCS is quite different. The revised HCS has specific criteria for each health and physical hazard, along with detailed instructions for hazard evaluation and determinations as to whether mixtures or substances are covered. It also establishes both hazard classes and hazard categories—for most of the effects; the classes are divided into categories that reflect the relative severity of the effect.

The current HCS does not include categories for most of the health hazards covered, so this new approach provides additional information that can be related to the appropriate response to address the hazard. OSHA has included the general provisions for hazard classification in paragraph (d) of the revised rule, and added extensive appendixes (Appendixes A and B) that address the criteria for each health or physical effect.

Labels: Under the current Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), the label preparer must provide the identity of the chemical, and the appropriate hazard warnings. This may be done in a variety of ways, and the method to convey the information is left to the preparer.

Under the revised HCS, once the hazard classification is completed, the standard specifies what information is to be provided for each hazard class and category.

Labels will require the following

elements: Pictogram: a symbol plus other graphic elements, such as a border, background pattern, or color that is intended to convey specific information about the hazards of a chemical. Each pictogram consists of a different symbol on a white background within a red square frame set on a point (i.e. a red diamond). There are nine pictograms under the GHS. However, only eight pictograms are required under the HCS. Signal words: a single word used to indicate the relative level of severity of hazard and alert the reader to a potential hazard on the label. The signal words used are "danger" and "warning." "Danger" is used for the more severe hazards, while "warning" is used for less severe hazards.

Hazard Statement: a statement assigned to a hazard class and category that describes the nature of the hazard(s) of a chemical, including, where appropriate, the degree of

hazard.

Precautionary Statement: a phrase that describes recommended measures to be taken to minimize or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposure to a hazardous chemical, or improper storage or handling of a hazardous chemical.

Safety Data Sheets: The information required on the safety data sheet (SDS) will remain essentially the same as that in the current standard (HazCom 1994). HazCom 1994 indicates what information has to be included on an SDS, but does not specify a format for presentation or order of information.

The revised Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom 2012) requires that the information on the SDS be presented using specific headings in a specified sequence.

The training was held at the Passaic County Fire Academy on September 21 and 22.

The firefighters attended the basic end-user program which included a classroom and hands-on familiar- JUMP TO FILE # 092713104 ization sessions.

Then, each student performed nine bailout slides at varied levels of difficulty from a second floor window.

While most members were attending the basic end user training, several officers and senior members received the Train-theTrainer class. The TtT class provided the participants with the basics of using the system, but also more in depth training that included troubleshooting, use and operation with safety back-up belays rope systems and more.

All equipment and training was provided by All Hands Fire Equipment & Training, a leading

provider for firefighter escape systems and training classes.

Clifton tackles third alarm Clifton firefighters battled a three alarm fire on September 9.

Just before 3 p.m., Companies were dispatched to on a reported structure fire at 193 Ackerman Ave. Arriving first, Ladder 3 confirmed a working fire. Companies had heavy fire in the second floor extending to the upper floor and cock loft. A second alarm was made, bringing more city units to the scene. As heavy fire made its way to the top floor, a third alarm was made also a special call for an additional engine and a truck company to the scene. At one point, fire vented out the building extending to an exposure building, which was quickly knocked down.

One resident was taken to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. Firefighters battled the fire for about an hour before bringing it under control. Additional companies that assisted on scene were Passaic, Paterson, Garfield and Nutley. The Passaic county air cascade unit operated also Box-54.

The Clifton fire prevention unit is investigating the cause.

Millville blaze displaces seven Millville, NJ. A stubborn blaze in a duplex dwelling caused extensive damage and displaced seven occupants yesterday.

At 5:14 p.m., on September 18th, the Millville Fire Department (Station 30), along with Station 98 Millville Rescue Squad, was dispatched to a dwelling fire in the 300 block of W. Powell Street. The Cumberland County 911 center advised that they were receiving numerous calls.

Captain John Wettstein was first to arrive with E-34 and reported he had a two story dwelling with heavy smoke and fire showing on the C/D corner. He and his crew stretched a one and three quarter inch line along the D side and began to attack the flames.

As soon as additional personnel arrived, crews entered the dwelling attacking the flames and performing a primary search. The search proved negative for both sides.

rior and exterior walls.

The house, one of Millville’s older ones, was of balloon construction. There were four different types of siding and several roofs.

The only access to the attic was via narrow winding stairs.

Acting Chief, Captain Mike Lippincott, called an all hands at 5:26 which brought Rosenhayn (Station 29) to the scene and recalled off-duty personnel.

The flames had extended up the interior and exterior walls and into the attic. Numerous wires in front of the building prevented the use of an aerial ladder and the condition of the roof did not appear safe for roof ladder operations.

At 5:45 Acting Chief Lippincott called for a second alarm which brought Vineland Station 2 to the scene.

As conditions worsened, Acting

Chief Lippincott called for all interior crews to evacuate the building.

Numerous hand lines, along with a three inch line supplying a Blitzfire were employed.

The fire was placed under control at around 7:00 and crews remained on the scene overhauling until 10:00.

Forty fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene with four engines, two ladders, a rescue, a light wagon and an ambulance.

No occupants were home at the time of the fire, which originated in the first-floor rear of 307. Both sides sustained heavy damage.

One firefighter had minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the fire department.

The Southern Shore Chapter of the Red Cross provided assistance to the seven occupants.

Truck rollover in Harwick The driver of a refrigerated truck was injured when his truck rolled over on Spring Valley Road. He over-corrected when he realized his vehicle had entered the other lane of traffic.

His vehicle then rolled onto its side on the guardrail and took out an electric utility pole. A resident on that road heard the crash as her power went out. A first aider with a medical kit attended to the driver after he climbed out, until the Blairstown Ambulance Corp. arrived. He was then transported to Newton Medical Center. The Blairstown Hose Company had to close down the road for over six hours as J.C.P. and L. worked to restore power.

As it made a left turn to cross over 80 to get to Truck Stops of America , the load shifted causing it to roll on to its right side. The driver was transported to Pocono Medical Center by the Knowlton Rescue Squad. Knowlton Fire was called out to contain a fuel spill.

Who needs to laugh more than the Fire Companies ---the first responders who deal with dangerous circumstances each and every day?

There’s an innovative concept for fund-raising developed by Joey Novick, who is a stand-up comedian and the Fire Commissioner in his hometown: Stand-up comedy shows.

Fire companies can get much-needed laughs and profit financially as well.

Novick's company, ComedyWorks, provides all-star headline comedians from HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime, Last Comic Standing, and the Tonight Show.

Novick’s been producing comedy shows since 1977, and has experience producing shows with such comedians as Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie O’Donnell, Larry The Cable Guy, and Tim Allen.

"The comedians were very funny, and very professional," wrote Mark Bruhmuller, Fire Chief of the Churchtown Fire Company of New York. “Joey Novick did an excellent job. Everybody loves to laugh, and it's a great deal of fun."

ComedyWorks produces more than 300 shows a year, almost 150 of those for emergency service organizations. The money these shows can

raise varies, depending on things like the number of tickets sold, how they're priced, the amount spent on promotion and whether food and drink are available.

"Mostly companies produce shows in their own facilities, which may hold 300–400 people," says Novick.

"We'll put together a show for them that will bring in comedians from major comedy clubs, with a headliner from HBO, Comedy Central, or the Tonight Show. The feature performer will be someone who's headlined the comedy circuit: Catch a Rising Star, the Improv, the Comedy Store. The host of the show will be a comedian who's very high-energy, like a gameshow host, to get the audience warmed up. A triple headliner show!”

The Somerset Fire Company of New Jersey produces two fundraisers a year through ComedyWorks.

"We've done about ten shows so far, and it's been great," says Mike Rein-

beck, who coordinates the shows for the 65-member volunteer department.

"A friend of mine who had used Joey told me, 'This guy books really good acts.' So, we did the first show, everything was great, and we've been doing shows with Joey ever since."

"I find their people to be very funny," agrees Adam Hubney, chief of the Atlantic Highlands Volunteer Fire Department in New Jersey, which books comedians through ComedyWorks for its annual dinner.

"We have a professional comedy club in our county, and the quality is just as good."

Comedy Works provides a 30-page ‘How-To’ guide that assists organizations through the comedy show production and warns of mistakes to avoid. "We make sure they follow everything in the guide," says Novick. "If a company has never done this before, it gives you everything from you need to know. We make sure that things get done right.

Enterprise Fire Company No. 2 is beginning to start a fundraising campaign to raise money so they can restore a classic piece of fire apparatus.

Little Falls plans to restore antique Little Falls, NJ. Enterprise Fire Company No. 2 is beginning to start a fundraising campaign to raise money so they can restore a classic piece of fire apparatus, a 71 year veteran of the JUMP TO FILE department, a 1942 #090813108 GMC pumper.

It was one of the first motorized pieces to serve here and responded to its final alarm back in 1979, but never really retired from the volunteer fire company. The engine still responds to parades and ceremonies.

It had been dedicated to the late Assistant Chief Robert Conti, a longtime member and wellloved fireman. The engine was actually sold by Crane Motors of Little Falls back in 1942. The shop was located right next to Engine Co. 2 on Paterson Avenue.

But over seven decades later, the truck is showing its age, faded paint and gold-leaf, tarnished chrome and a lot of rust, but mechanically it runs well. The goal is to raise money in support of the engine's restoration.

On September 8th, they held a fundraiser to kick off the NFL football weekend at Maggie’s Town Tavern. Proceeds from mug sales went to the little 1942 GMC pumper. Also at the event, the firefighters honored neighboring volunteer fire company Engine 3 in Woodland Park, NJ with a plaque, who recently donated the fire company’s 1954 GMC pumper back to them. Woodland Park (West Paterson) had purchased the fire engine back in 1979, restored and operated the antique for 33 years until 2012.

New Campbell headquarters in South Brunswick October 11th and 12th was the Open House for visitors, customers and friends to see the new headquarters for Campbell Supply and Campbell Freightliner, located at 1015 Cranbury South River Road in South Brunswick.

The rear of the facility borders New Jersey Turnpike property on the northbound side, just past Exit 8A from which it is easily seen.

Campbell Holdings, LLC, the parent company of Campbell Supply Company and Campbell Freightliner announced that the facility will employ 125 people and provide parts, service, new trucks sales, used truck sales and first responder vehicle sales for customers domiciled in or traveling through the north east region.

More than three years in the making, this brand new state-of-the-art facility encompasses more than 90,000 square feet of space. It includes customer amenities, service shops, parts warehouse, and a 2,000 square foot parts retail area including a “Pro Shop” with the latest Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Spartan ERV and Wheeled Coach apparel and accessories to serve the commercial truck and emergency services industry.

Scott Campbell, President and CEO of the Campbell companies states, “Our new facility is the largest and most modern commercial truck and emergency vehicle specific facility on the eastern seaboard.” The facility sits on 16.2 acres of property, equipped with 40 full service bays, a plush television lounge with HDTV, a large comfortable customer lounge with lockers, laundry and shower facilities and on-site trailer parking.

The parts department has a professionally staffed phone room and 12 Sprinter delivery vehicles which will offer same day delivery throughout the region. Campbell Supply has received the following orders: For Woodbridge Township, two Spartan ERV, Star Rescue pumpers.

Some specs include LLFD chassis (between the long-four-door and the extra-long-four-door), six seat cab, Hale Qmax, 2,000 gpm pumps, 750 gallon water tanks, Harrison 15 kw generators and light towers. They will be powered by a Cummins ISL, 450 hp diesel with an Allison 3000 EVS transmission.

Fire & Safety Services reports the following Pierce orders: For Park Ridge an Arrow XT pumper, Carlstadt a Velocity pumper and a Velocity 100 foot aluminum ladder (both Bergen County). For Jefferson Township (Morris County), a Saber pumper and for Colts Neck (Monmouth County), a Velocity pumper.

Pierce deliveries include a Dash CF pumper for Sayreville (Middlesex County), a Velocity 75 foot quint for Eatontown (Monmouth County), an Arrow XT pumper for Elizabeth (Union County) and two Saber pumpers for Pennsauken (Camden County.)
