MVA with entrapment in Endicott Fire at Tractor Supply in Castleton The East Greenbush Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at the Tractor Supply after a tractor trailer backed in to the main transformer to the building. The smoke from the fire could be seen from the road. Engine 11-7 arrived on scene and the crew deployed a dry chemical fire extinguisher and knocked down the fire. It was stopped before it could spread to the pile of pallets next to the building. National Grid was called to the scene to kill the power and the building was closed for the night.

During the midday hours of May 13, 2014 Endicott Fire was dispatched by Broome County Communications to the intersection of Monroe Street and Harrison Avenue for a two car MVA possibly with entrapment. While enroute, police arrived and confirmed a t-bone accident with injuries and entrapment in one of the vehicles. Quint 25, EMS 25, Inspector 25, and Chief 25 responded from the fire department and began assessing patients. One patient was

still trapped in a vehicle with all occupants including several children already out of the other. The vehicles were stabilized and hydraulic tools were deployed, but not utilized due to the patient more easily being removed through the passenger side door. The investigation into the accident is being handled by Endicott

Police. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. Endicott Fire was assisted on scene by Endicott Police, Union Ambulance, and Superior Ambulance. All crews were clear of the scene in less than an hour. This incident was also notable as it was the maiden emergency voyage for Endicott's new Sutphen SA '75 Quint which went in service earlier in the day. - NICHOLAS GRISWOLD

Crews begin the huge task of clearing streets of mud and debris

Gowanda declares disaster, again, due to severe flash flood About 8:30 a.m. on April 13th, the Gowanda Fire Department was toned out for street flooding on Hill Street in the village. As units were responding, it quickly became obvious that this was not going to be a typical call. Heavy rain had once again caused massive flash flooding of Thatcher Brook and it had spilled its banks in major areas of the village. Tons of mud and debris had collected in the stream bed of this creek since the August flood of 2009, and very little had been done to remove the massive amounts of debris that collected in and along its banks. Now four years later, it came to see us again. Several choke points in this low lying valley community caused much of the flow to leave its banks and flood through the community with mud, water and huge amounts of tree debris.

JUMP TO FILE #051514108

The village had taken precautions and only a week or so before this flood had installed the "Code Red" alerting system for residents and emergency responders. The Gowanda fire, police and highway crews were quick in getting roads closed and equipment to the scene of the narrow and low bridges in town to try to keep the water moving. The village disaster coordinator, fire, police and public works depts, worked very hard and quickly to evacuate any that needed it and start the massive clean up process. Once again, the village reservoir was flooded with mud also. One of the major projects for the fire department was to dewater a huge

drainage basin in the middle of the village that was filled with millions of gallons of muddy water. We started within two hours to pump this "pit" out so that the surrounding basements could be pumped out without filling back up within minutes through floor drains and basement walls. Pumps ranging from a three inch to a massive 12 inch diesel unit were used were brought to the area and put to work. After about 16 hours of pumping time, the entire "lake" was drained, basements pumped out and streets were being cleared up. Mutual did came from dozens of other organizations, fire, medical, police, highway, NYSDOC, DEC, to help the community. - TIM TWICHELL

2nd Lt. Tim Morano of Hughsonville FD during a tunnel extrication. The scenario is the front of a minivan is in simulated water and emergency personal can only egress the van through the rear hatch to rescue the 150 pound dummy victim.

Joint advance extrication drill Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY. Rombout Fire Company and Hughsonville Fire Department jointly hosted an Advance Extrication Drill. The classroom portion was held on Friday night at Rombout Station 1. With the hands-on training portion, members had a choice between Saturday at Rombout or Sunday at Hughsonville. The classroom session taught firefighters about modern vehicle construction, the different types of entrapment of victims, how to mitigate hazmat or serious hazards, vehicle stabilization and scene safety. Discussion included how extrication techniques are evolving with the changing vehicle frame designs over the last several years

JUMP TO FILE #051114103

and how these changes effort on how emergency personal extricate trapped victims. Techniques used on ten year or older vehicles are not as quick, efficient or safe as with newer vehicles. There are difficulties that firefighters face with polymer composite and with alternate fuels vehicles. The hands-on training found vehicles in realistic positions, upside down, on their sides or stacked on top of each other for the firefighters training scenarios. Air-bags lifted vehicles, Hurst tools cut or spread crushed cars, and stabilization jacks were used.

Decisions were needed to be made by the IC. Is this plan working? Do we go to alternate plan? If the Hurst tool stopped working, what do we do now, what hands tools are needed? In one scenario, the front of a mini-van is in simulated water and emergency personal can only egress the van through the rear hatch to rescue the 150 pound dummy victim. Besides Rombout and Hughsonville, firefighters from New Hackensack FD and East Fishkill FD also attended. Assembling the twelve vehicles to be positioned at two different sites was accomplished by Beacon Salvage of Beacon, NY. - KEVIN BARRY

On a bitter cold, windy night at 1:36 a.m., a fire broke out in a multiple dwelling. The fire started inside an interior wall, spreading to a mansard roof while numerous residents slept, not knowing that a major fire was burning in the concealed spaces of their building. I happened to be the first unit on the scene and reported to dispatch that we had heavy fire, with numerous people still in the building. In fact, the situation was eerie because there was literally no evidence of human activity inside the building. There were no lights on, and the parking lot was full of cars. I remember pulling my vehicle to the front of the building and placing the siren on yelp to awaken occupants and then running through the buildings with a police officer, knocking on doors. Ultimately, several search teams rescued occupants, with one fatality and several injuries. An intense investigation took place, zeroing in on the exact location where the fire started inside a wall. At some point in the past, electrical work had taken place in one of the units, improperly. We were never able to determine who the person was. He or she may have been a homeowner, a wellmeaning friend, a handyman, an unlicensed contractor or a licensed contractor cutting corners.

The individual, who made the faulty connection never realized that their mistake would put approximately 40 peoples' lives in extreme jeopardy, as well as all the firefighters, who searched through the building. They unknowingly killed an innocent woman and almost killed several more. Recently, we have been encountering numerous residential one and two-family homes being illegally converted into rooming houses and small apartments. The construction related to these illegal conversions is generally not inspected; and because there are no inspections or building permits, the codes are frequently ignored. This is particularly dangerous when dealing with load-bearing structural changes and with electrical work. The problem has become so prevalent that we have decided to address this problem by going after the contractors, who are doing this work. We are in the process of obtaining search warrants to inspect some of the illegal buildings and will be working with our local Office of Consumer Protection, the county's Board of Electrical Examiners, the local health department and municipal fire/building inspectors' offices. In addition, we are working with our local utility to prevent the installation of electric meters in illegally converted or constructed buildings - no building permit, then no meter will be installed. We intend to prosecute those individuals doing shoddy work without permits and hope to get the word out to prevent future illegal conversions and prevent future fires and deaths.

Hazmat call at Plug Power The Verdoy Fire Department responded to the Plug Power Company in Colonie. The calls came in for a large explosion and a vapor cloud coming from the building. The first arriving chief had had a heavy vapor cloud coming from the building. Crews arrived on scene and waited for the company representative to arrive on scene before entering the building. Firefighters cleared and area around the building until the vapor cloud has cleared. The company representative went in to the building check and discovered leak in the hydrogen tank securing it. No one was injured during the call.

Fire bike to be presented during gala Frederick “Michael” Hoffman, of the Goshen Fire Department is this year’s recipient of the Orange County Firefighters Museum’s 4th Annual Fire Prevention Educator of the Year JUMP TO FILE # Award. 060414125 To honor his, and all of our firefighter’s, spirit of volunteerism our friends at Orange County Choppers are allowing us to present their famous Fire Bike during the gala being held at the museum on Saturday, June 7th from 5 to 7 p.m. The Fire Bike was built as a tribute to the 343 New York firefighters who perished in the attacks of September 11, 2001. The Fire Bike is one of the most famous bikes to ever roll out of the Orange County Choppers shop. Appropriately assembled of parts from across the country, the Fire Bike is a symbol of the unity, honor and pride that swept the country after 9-11. With a gas tank from California, a carburetor from Texas, wheels from New Hampshire and a swing arm from Oklahoma, the Fire Bike is a stunning portrayal of the effects of this fateful day on this nation. By far the focal point and most meaningful piece of the bike is the bolt affixed atop the gas tank; a part of history recovered by a firefighter from the ashes of the World Trade Center. Paul Teutul, Sr. said it best when he said, “it’s not just an Orange County chopper. It’s a New York City chopper.” - ED DEVITT

Late night motorcycle accident in Troy

Porch fire in Troy City of Troy responded to an alarm of fire on 15th St. Engine 2 arriving on scene and had a small porch fire with flames touching the front windows. The crews called a Signal 20, but changed it to a precautionary Signal 30 and held all units on scene. Firefighters knocked down the fire. The porch had minor damage to it. The cause of the fire was determined to be from cigarette that was tossed in to a flower pot on the porch.

The Rescue Squad, Engine 3, Medic 4, and Car 3 from the City of Troy responded to Campbell Ave and Stewarts for a reported motorcycle accident with injuries. The fire crews arrived on scene and shut down traffic in both directions due to the motorcycle and person down in the middle of the driving lane. The person was packaged up and taken to a local hospital for nonlife threatening injuries. The area was opened a short time later.

In March we fought an 8 hour warehouse fire and saved a big portion of town, only lost two structures. After that fought two housefires, saving two trapped occupants in one structure. Thanks for the help acquiring this truck. We hope the truck will remain a valuable asset for years to come. We will contact you in the future if we plan to purchase another vehicle. We were very satisfied with your companies assistance.

Rapids makes quick work of electronics storage shed fire Niagara County Sheriffs Deputy Julie Kratz noticed a large amount of smoke coming from the rear of the Lockport Town Hall. At first, she was thinking maybe Rapids Fire Department had a drill going on. Within seconds, she saw it wasn't a drill. The Town of Lockports storage shed that they use to hold all electronics collected in the town was fully engulfed and there was a town truck dangerously close. Rapids was toned out and within a few minutes this volunteer company had crews

on scene. Their first in engine rolled past the fire and caught the hydrant right around the bend in the parking lot for ample water. Chief Joe Fries had his first attack line hit the front of the building and before they even got rolling, Chief Fries had another line off and charged to protect them and the truck. The main stream line was laid in, and once it was charged, the

building was flooded with water. Chief Fries had a fully equipped engine truck, his ambulance and highly trained firefighters at the scene ready to jump into action if needed. Rapids attack team had this fire out within 15 minutes. Chief Fries called in the Area 4 Origin and Cause Team since there was no power running to the building. No one was hurt and the Niagara County Sheriffs Office took the report. - STEPHEN WALLACE

Working fire for Rush Rush, NY. On May 7, 2014 at 9:11 a.m., firefighters were toned out to 2814 Pinnacle Road in Rush, New York. A large four car wood frame unattached garage with brick covering 20 JUMP TO FILE# feet from home was 051214110 fully involved when Rush firefighters arrived. Automatic mutual assistance was alerted from Honeoye Falls and Henrietta Fire Departments as well as Henrietta ALS to the scene. Scottsville Fire Department filled in at Rush’s station. 19 Rush firefighterss responded to the scene. Chief Jim Bucci was incident command. Rush pumper 582 was on scene in ten minutes from time of dispatch. The wood on the home was just starting to burn when Rush arrived. Rush laid a five inch supply line in about 400 feet from the road. Honeoye Falls Pumper 562 came in and backed up 582. This also worked out great when Rush's pumper had a malfunction and couldn't pump water for about five minutes. The box system with automatic dispatch that Rush put into place 15 months ago was tested for the first time on a working fire during the week day when we are very short of people and worked better than expected. The fire was under control in approximately 15 minutes. The Monroe County Fire Bureau is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. - BOB FAUGH

Tractor trailer versus car Town of Newburgh, NY. New York State Police and Winona Lake Engine Company were alerted to a tractor trailer versus car accident on Route 84 westbound at Exit 7. According to reports, the tractor trailer crossed the median and hit the passenger vehicle. Winona Lake command advised Orange County 911 that they had an MVA with pin and the jaw were going to work. The driver of the vehicle had what appeared to be serious injuries with an extended amount of extrication needed. The Town of Newburgh transported the injured patient to a local hospital for treatment. New York State Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Buffalo firefighters made quick work of a structure fire that erupted at 217 Hamburg Street in the city's Old First Ward neighborhood shortly after 4 p.m. on May 15, 2014. Crews arrived to find a large two and half story wood frame with heavy fire on the first floor. Command ordered firefighters to knock down the fire and to make an offensive interior attack. As firefighters were knocking down the fire, primary and secondary searches were conducted. All searches were negative and it was believed the home was vacant. Command requested an extra two engines and one ladder due to an exposure on the 2 side that was only a few feet from the original

fire building. Firefighters used three-one and three quarter inch, two-two and a half inch hand lines and 45 feet of ground ladders at the blaze. Damage was pegged at $50,000 to the building at 217 Hamburg and $5,000 each for the exposures at 215 and 219 Hamburg. One firefighter suffered injuries when a portion of second floor collapsed. The cause is under investigation. - KEVIN BRAUTLACHT

Claims serviCe... It’s where the rubber meets the road Fancy packaging, discounted pricing and potential dividends mean very little if your VFBL provider denies your claim or handles it poorly. Discounts and dividends don’t really concern the injured volunteer who needs diagnostic testing or surgery that isn’t being approved. When your volunteer is injured in the line of duty, no one provides better claims service than Fire Districts Mutual... No One! If taking care of your injured volunteer is high on your priority list, you need to talk with us. Since 1978 we’ve been providing the best possible claims service to volunteers injured in the line of duty.
